A letter from the Founder, CEO & Producing Artistic Director

Dear Friends,

I am so thrilled to welcome you to our production of Anything Goes:Youth Edition featuring our Gulfshore Playhouse Education Conservatory students. This is our first full student production in the Baker Theatre and Education Center, and it’s been such a joy to see it come together.

When we decided to open this theatre with a professional production of Anything Goes, we realized we’d have a few weeks at the end of December when the theatre would be sitting empty before we turned it over for our next mainstage show. Instead of striking this gorgeous set, we thought why not keep it up for a little bit longer and give our students the chance to perform on the same set as our professional actors?

This idea opened up a world of possibilities. Throughout the rehearsal process, many of our youth cast had not only the opportunity to watch the professional production but also to learn from the professional company of Anything Goes. For instance, Kilty Reidy, the Equity actor who played Lord Evelyn, worked with Michael Martinez-Melara, the Conservatory’s Lord Evelyn, to mentor him and provide tips and insights on embodying the role. We are uniquely positioned to provide the opportunity to train with professionals who have Broadway credits and years of industry experience.

I want to congratulate director Steven Calakos, choreographer Dann Dunn, and the rest of the creative team and Gulfshore Playhouse staff who are dedicated to providing a world-class experience for our students. Our mission is to help our students grow not only as performers, but also as people by building their confidence, emphasizing camaraderie, and creating a fun, safe environment for creative expression. I am so proud of this team and this cast for all the hard work they’ve put in to make this show happen.

Our Education department overall is flourishing this season. We have many upcoming opportunities in 2025 for people of all ages that I would encourage you to explore. Thank you so much for being here and supporting Gulfshore Playhouse Education.

Enjoy the show!

With gratitude,

D irector’s Note

It’s hard to believe that Anything Goes debuted 90 years ago, yet its timeless humor, charm, and unforgettable songs remain just as captivating today. At its heart, this show celebrates resilience, reinvention, and the joy of embracing the unexpected— messages that resonate as powerfully now as they did nearly a century ago.

What makes this production especially exciting is the opportunity for our Conservatory students to perform on the same professional mainstage set as our incredible actors, many of whom brought remarkable Broadway credentials to Gulfshore Playhouse. It’s an experience that not only elevates their craft but also bridges the gap between aspiring young artists and seasoned professionals, a hallmark of our educational mission. This unique experience is a testament to our commitment to fostering growth and excellence in theatre education.

I couldn’t be prouder of this cast of Anything Goes: Youth Edition. Their hard work and dedication during countless rehearsals have truly paid off. From mastering musical numbers to nailing incredible dance routines, their energy and talent shine in every scene. This group has brought a timeless classic to life with creativity and heart, and I can’t wait for everyone to see their amazing performance!

Adding to the thrill, we’re taking this production on the road in January to perform at Walt Disney World! Sharing Anything Goes: Youth Edition in such a magical setting will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our students and a proud moment for all of us.

Thank you for supporting our students and being part of this journey. Here’s to an evening of laughter, music, and a reminder that, truly, anything goes!

About the Authors

Cole Porter (Playwright) was born in Peru, Indiana in 1891 and died in Hollywood 73 years later. In between, he wrote some of the most memorable songs ever heard on stage or screen, among them “Night and Day,” “Begin the Beguine,” “You’re The Top,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Love For Sale,” and “Just One of Those Things.” During the 1930s, his most productive decade, he provided a series of sparkling scores for such hits as Gay Divorce ; Anything Goes; Jubilee ; Born to Dance; and Red, Hot and Blue. Despite a crippling riding accident in 1937 which left him in constant pain, he achieved his greatest commercial success in 1948, with Kiss Me, Kate. His name remains synonymous with wit and sophistication to this day.

P.G. Wodehouse (Author) and Guy Bolton (Author) were both born in England. They were introduced by Jerome Kern, and he suggested they all work together. They did, tirelessly, and in the beginning of their collaboration wrote nearly one show per month: the famed Princess Theatre musicals. Bolton and Wodehouse went on to write more than 20 musicals together. Usually, they collaborated on the book, and Wodehouse wrote the lyrics. Both lived into their nineties, and both, together and individually, were astoundingly prolific. Bolton, with one collaborator or another, or on his own, had a hand in well over 100 musicals and straight plays as well as numerous film scripts and novels. Wodehouse wrote 97 books, most notably, the Jeeves novels and countless short stories, articles, essays and films. In 1975, he was knighted side by side with Charlie Chaplin. In addition to Anything Goes, their work together includes Have A Heart ; Oh, Boy!; Leave It To Jane; Oh, Lady! Lady!; Sitting Pretty ; Oh, Kay! and Rosalie. They remained friends and neighbors (in Remsenburg, New York) throughout their final days.

Howard Lindsay (Author) was an actor, stage manager, director and playwright before teaming up with Russel Crouse. Lindsay and Crouse’s partnership stands today as the longest collaboration of any writers in theatrical history, lasting for more than 28 years. The two men first joined forces in 1934, when the producer Vinton Freedley brought them together to rewrite the libretto for Anything Goes, which Lindsay directed. Two years later, they wrote another Cole Porter show, Red, Hot and Blue. Their first straight play, Life with Father, opened in 1936 and holds the record fir the longest running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. Lindsay and his wife, Dorothy Stickney, created the roles of Clarence and Vinnie Day, performing them for five years. Among other shows, Lindsay and Crouse also wrote The Sound of Music (score by Rodgers and Hammerstein), the Pulitzer Prize winning State of the Union, Call me Madam ,and Mr. President (scores by Irving Berlin); The Prescott Proposals and The Great Sebastians. They produced The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace.

Russel Crouse (Author) was a newspaperman, a press agent for the Theatre Guild, the author of several books and a librettist before partnering with Howard Lindsay. Their first straight play, Life with Father, opened in 1936 and holds the record for the longest running play on Broadway, at 3,224 performances. They produced The Hasty Heart, Detective Story, and Arsenic and Old Lace. In addition to his work with Lindsay, Russel Crouse later reproduced, in collaboration with his wife, Anna Erskine Crouse, a son, the writer Timothy Crouse, and a daughter, the actress Lindsay Crouse.

Timothy Crouse (Author) has been a contributing editor of Rolling Stone and The Village Voice, as well as the Washington columnist for Esquire, writing numerous articles for these other publications, including the New Yorker. He is the author of The Boys on the Bus, a classic account of the role of the press in presidential campaigns. With Luc Brebion he translated Roger Martin du Gard’s Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort (Knopf, 2000). He is currently writing short stories, one of which, “Sphinxes,” was included in the O Henry Prize Stories 2005. He is the son of one of the original authors of Anything Goes, Russel Crouse.

John Weidman (Author) wrote the book for Pacific Overtures (Tony® nominations, Best Book and Musical), score by Stephen Sondheim, produced and directed by Harold Prince. He co-authored the Tony Award®-winning 1987 revival of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes and wrote the book for Assassins, score by Stephen Sondheim, directed Off-Broadway by Jerry Zaks and in London’s West End (Drama Critics’ Award for Best Musical) by Sam Mendes. Weidman’s other musicals include Big: The Musical, Contact, Road Show, and Happiness. Since 1986 he has written for Sesame Street, receiving seven Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing. In his time at Gulfshore Playhouse, Joel has helped grow and quadruple the theatre’s budget, triple the staff, has co-managed the design and construction of the new $72M Baker Theatre and Education Center, new production shops construction project, has been instrumental in joining LORT (most recently, being on the negotiating committee for LORT and Actors’ Equity Association), and navigated and guided the organization through the pandemic and Hurricane Ian. Joel’s thirty year career has taken him to some of our nation’s leading professional regional theatres. He most recently spent seven seasons at America’s oldest theatre, Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Joel has played integral roles in the production of hundreds of plays over ten seasons at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, four years at Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY, five summers at the Weston Playhouse in Vermont, American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. Joel is a graduate of Indiana University and originally from Miami, Florida.

Kristen Coury (CEO & Producing Artistic Director) is the CEO and Producing Artistic Director of Gulfshore Playhouse. She founded the Playhouse in 2004, after moving to Naples from New York City. Under her leadership, the Playhouse has grown to a staff of 56, an annual budget of $8.15M with no debt, and led the charge to create a $72M state-of-the-art Theatre and Education Center at the gateway to downtown Naples, which will be open to the public in late 2024. As part of this project, Coury ignited a public/private partnership with the City of Naples, donating an acre of land upon which to build a public parking garage. While in New York, she worked on Broadway for Walt Disney Theatrical’s production of Beauty and the Beast, both nationally and internationally, and for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s company, The Really Useful Group, working on Sunset Boulevard and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Kristen made her feature film directorial debut with Friends and Family, a comedy starring Tony Lo Bianco, Anna Maria

Alberghetti, and Tovah Feldshuh, which was released around the US and Europe. Kristen has directed several new works, produced a CD, and worked on a variety of musicals in various stages of development. Kristen is also a frequent investor in Broadway productions, most recently The Neil Diamond Musical: A Beautiful Noise. Kristen has directed over 40 productions for the Playhouse. Including a ten person, 2 piano My Fair Lady, world premieres, the world premiere of The God Game by Suzanne Bradbeer and The Butcher by Gwydion Suilebhan. Kristen was named one of the “Top 40 Professionals Under 40” by Gulfshore Life Magazine in 2008, a “Star in the Arts” by the United Arts Council of Collier County in 2011, and she was named one of the Men and Women of the Year by Gulfshore Life in 2013. She served two terms on the board of Theatre Communications Group, the national advocacy group for professional theatres. She is a member of the board of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Business Leaders in Collier County in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Most recently, she was appointed to Florida Council for arts and culture by Senate President Kathleen Passidomo.

Stage Stories: Celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage in Theatre with Dan Bacalzo May 15, 2025 11:00AM- 2:00PM

Gulfshore Playhouse Education is proud to forge community partnerships with other local cultural institutions such as the Holocaust Museum, Artis—Naples, and the Collier County Public Schools to bring unique theatrical experiences to thousands of students across Collier and Lee Counties.

Remember: The Story of Abe Price

Remember: The Story of Abe Price by Jeffrey Binder, an original play based on a true story, is brought to you in partnership with The Holocaust Museum and Cohen Education Center. At just 16-years-old, Abraham Piasecki’s life is uprooted by the Nazi invasion of Poland. From living in the ghetto of Kielce to imprisonment at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Remember brings to life the harrowing true story of a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi captivity five times.

Student Matinee Series

Gulfshore Playhouse creates special student matinee performances for each of our mainstage productions so students in our region can experience live professional theatre free of charge.

These educational opportunities are made possible thanks to the Anthony and Beverly Petullo Endowment for Student Matinees and VIP Experiences.
