It’s springtime in the islands and an ideal time to check them out. More trees and flowers are in full bloom as the season unfolds, the weather is temperate, and accommodations and other tourist-centred venues are not too busy. A number of events take place in April and May, from Earth Day festivals to May long weekend activities. This week (April 4-7) sees the 12th Annual Nettlefest take place on Galiano Island, and Pender Island is holding a Short Film Festival on April 20 at the Pender Community Hall. The 13th Annual Easter Art Show, titled Homage, runs from April 19 to 28 at Mahon Hall and kicks off the fine arts season on Salt Spring. Curated by Patrick McCallum, it features work from Salt Spring and other Gulf Islands artists. A number of arts-focused events also take place during that period. Over on the Penders, the Easter Sunday sees the 20th Annual South Pender Island Easter Art Walk, featuring self-guided tours of 10 art galleries and studios plus one organic bakery. Islanders are back from their winter vacations and seasonal businesses are opening their doors, ready to host visitors and future residents.
