he Christmas holiday season is a great time to visit the Gulf Islands to see if it’s the place for you to move to. The summer and early fall visitor rush is over but the bustle of Christmas activities is well underway. Community warmth is at its peak at this time of year. Salt Spring has a Christmas on Salt Spring website that details a number of different activities. You can sing Christmas carols with famous Canadian folksinger (and resident) Valdy in Fulford Harbour on Dec. 23 or take in Christmas With Scrooge, a Salt Spring-centred version of Dickens’ Christmas Carol during its run from Dec. 13-22. The Lions Santa Ship visits all of the Gulf Islands on Saturday, Dec. 14. It’s a longstanding tradition that originates in Bellingham, Wash. The first ship to bring Santa to San Juan and Gulf islands children sailed in 1947. Many island businesses, parks, institutions and individuals go all out in lighting up for the season, sparking beauty and hope through the dark winter solstice period.
