LETTER from the Chair Since the launch of our new recreation program offerings last fall, we have seen a steady increase in participation and the number of local contractors that we have partnered with. To make it easier for participants to find, learn about, and register for PARC programs, we are launching a new online registration platform later this fall. The new software will allow for online registrations, giving you the option to register you or your family for programs even when the PARC office is closed. You will also be able to renew pool passes or see the balance of your existing pool punch cards online. The new software will also allow us to continue to expand our programs to bring the best possible offerings to meet the needs of the community.

We also want to thank everyone who participated in the community consultation for the Centennial Park Master Plan.

Gathering input from you and other community stakeholders is essential for PARC to understand current park uses and issues.

Exploring the opportunities to enhance and revitalize this important public space is vital to the proper planning of park use for several more generations. For information about the consultation process, survey results and the draft conceptual designs, please visit our website www.crd.bc.ca/ssirec Removing barriers to recreation is a high priority for the commission and we are committed to continuing to deliver cost-effective programs and services. The Leisure Economic Access Policy (LEAP) assists individuals and families with low incomes to access recreation programs offered by PARC. Trail Profile

Restoration of the Charcoal Pit Kilns of Mouat Park

Located next to the downtown core, Mouat Park offers wonderful opportunities for leisure and recreation activities that are easily accessible to all. Take a long or short walk through the network of hiking trails, and check out the restored Japanese charcoal pit kilns.

Pioneers coming to British Columbia from Japan, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, established communities in Steveston and in the Gulf Islands, where they engaged in fishing and farming.

Many were from Wakayama Prefecture and brought with them the ancient technology of making charcoal in large pit kilns.

Isaburo Tasaka, who was born on Sashima Island in the Seto Inland Sea and moved to Salt Spring from Steveston in 1905, built two charcoal pit kilns in what later became this park.

During the off-season from fishing, Tasaka produced charcoal for the salmon canneries, for a soap factory and for blacksmiths.

The Tasaka family left Salt Spring Island in 1929. The kilns have remained inactive since then and were found buried under natural debris.

Many people contributed to the success of this restoration project, donating their help, guidance and valuable time. The restoration was made possible by the generous support of the Salt Spring Island Foundation, National Association of Japanese Canadians, Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society and many individual donors and collaborators.

Rose Murakami was the driving force behind the project.

Sumiyaki no Kai (Japan Charcoal Promotion Society) was an important resource for technical information about charcoal making and kiln structures. The contribution of Chuck Tasaka, grandson of Isaburo Tasaka, was also essential. Steve Nemtin’s contribution and expertise were key to piecing together the puzzle of these charcoal pit kilns.

The restoration project was carried out by PARC staff and contractors; Steve Nemtin, Restoration Supervisor; and, Rumiko Kanesaka, Project Photographer and President of the Japanese Garden Society.

Course fees may be subject to GST. • Cancellation Policy - Notice of three business days or more is required before the first class (or series of classes) in order to receive a refund. Refund requests after this time must be approved by the Manager, unless otherwise stated.

A $5 administration fee will be charged on all requests for refunds for each program.

There is no charge to leave a credit on your account.

PROGRAMS

• Course Cancellation - Programs may, at times, be cancelled or combined, due to insufficient enrollment. These decisions are made a few days in advance of the start date, so please register early to avoid disappointment.

In the event of a cancellation, time or location change, participants will be notified with as much lead time as possible, and refunds will be given proportionate to rate of fees or charges paid.

• Late Pick-up Fee - Parents may be charged a late pick up fee if they arrive after the end time of any PARC run Children’s camp. The fee of $20 will be due at the PARC office before your child can attend the next day of camp. If you are going to be

A fun creative evening of making rings. Choose the gemstones that speak to you from Christina’s large collection. Learn how to wrap your stone using copper wire to create beautiful rings made by you. If have wire wrapping tools please bring them to class.

Choose your two pendants from 50 different types of rocks and wrap them in copper wire. There are two styles we will learn. Feel free to bring alternative types of wire and wire wrapping tools if you have them. Simple fun class of creative play and a couple of lovely pendants made by you.

What is authentic Japanese food? Is Japanese food truly healthy?

What are the ingredients? What is Miso made from? What is the difference between Japanese soy sauce and Chinese? What does Teriyaki mean? This course will help you to understand the origin of the Japanese food culture. We will learn three basic recipes and you will be able to create your very own original traditional Japanese food!

COOKING continued LEARN TO MAKE FROMAGE BLANC 16 yrs+

Join Paula Maddison, who has been teaching the lost art of making cheese for over 4 years, in exploring the many diverse culinary uses of the Fromage Blanc curd. From dips to sauces and delicious spreads, Fromage Blanc is the one cheese everyone should know how to make. The class is hands on using already made curd. We will be infusing Fromage Blanc with herbs, spices and botanicals creating a wonderful appetizer to enjoy with family and friends at home as well as learning how to make Boursin.

The time constraints in preparing for choral performances often don’t allow for the sufficient examination of practical theory and the fundamentals of vocal technique. This course is designed to address this gap by providing some of the tools necessary to enhance the choral experience by building a stronger musical and vocal foundation. Portlock Park tennis courts were recently resurfaced After PARC maintenance staff pressure washed the courts, pickleball and tennis players spent two mornings patching the cracks with filler. Rada Resurfacing was then contracted to resurface and repaint the courts and lines. Court 4 now has one tennis court overlaid with four pickleball court lines, while Courts 1 to 3 only have tennis court lines.

What a great way to start your day! The pool is set up in standard layout with a fast, medium and slow lane and a wider lane for those leisure swimmers.

Adult & Youth

This time is set aside for older folks who would like to enjoy the pool with older people. It is also a great time for our high school PE classes to use the pool.

Everyone Welcome

Everyone is welcome to come down and enjoy the pool during this time. There will be a lane open for those who would like to swim lengths and all the toys will be available for those who would like to play around. The pool will be shared with the Swim Team from 4:00 - 6:00pm on Monday-Thursday.

Evening Lengths

This is a fantastic way to end your day. Come on down and enjoy the hot tub and soak your day away. The pool is set up in standard layout with a fast, medium and slow lane and a wider lane for those leisure swimmers.

Friday Night Madness

For the younger set (12 and up) --- great music, great times. Try out the foosball table.

Sunday Toonie Swim

Swim for 4 hours for just two dollars. This is a perfect time for families to enjoy the pool. All the toys are available and there is space to swim lengths as well.

Water Fitness Classes It is a proven fact that exercising in water is a great way to increase the resistance on your body as you move, yet it’s easy on the joints since the buoyancy takes a lot of the weight. There is also an increase in the calories burned because your body is losing heat while in the water.

Add these factors onto a great workout directed by one of our certified instructors and you will feel the difference right away. Rainbow Road Indoor Pool offers a selection of aquafit classes to suit everyone’s needs.

Energizer

This fun and upbeat class will challenge you to work hard in shallow or deep water. The instructor will guide you through a number of exercises which will help with your strength, flexibility and fitness.

Aqualite Just like the name says ... gentle, low-intensity exercise. Great if you are just starting out, have joint problems, or are recovering from an injury.

Nooners

Less intense than the morning Energizer session, this class is specifically for those looking for more strength and stretching.

An instructor leads the group through a number of exercises designed to get your blood flowing and your muscles moving.

Swimming Lessons The Rainbow Road pool offers swimming lessons for all ages and stages. Our Preschool program starts at age 3 and focuses mainly on making the swimmer water safe. Can they jump into the pool and get themselves back to the edge safely? Once that is accomplished then we focus on proper strokes and water skills. The Red Cross Swim Kids Program is directed towards swimmers 6 years and older. This program has the same structure as our Preschool Program but is better suited for an older swimmer. We also have classes for adults who would like to improve their strokes so they can enjoy the water more and we have classes specifically aimed at those folks who never learned to swim as a child.

Rainbow Road Indoor Pool Programs Lesson Descriptions

Preschool (3 – 6 years old)

Preschool 1 This level is for children who have never had lessons before. The instructor will focus on getting in and out of the water safely, blowing bubbles, getting the face wet and moving through the water.

Preschool 2 At this level, the instructor will focus on getting the head wet, assisted front and back floats, and kicking feet in the water.

Preschool 3 These swimmers will work on front and back floats and moving through the water with a swimming action. They will swim in deep water and jump off the edge of the pool and return to the side.

Preschool 4 At this level, the swimmers will learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back. They will also jump into deep water, learn about propulsion and the importance of swimming with a buddy.

Red Cross Swim Kids (6 – 13+ years old) Swim Kids 1 These swimmers will learn how to safely enter the water, float on their front and back, and swim a distance of 5 metres.

Swim Kids 2 At this level, the swimmers are introduced to deep water and will be asked to swim 10 metres. Front crawl is introduced.

Swim Kids 3 Swimmers will need to support themselves in deep water for 20 seconds in this level. They will also learn how to do a sitting dive and swim 5 metres of front crawl.

Swim Kids 4 These swimmers will be required to swim one whole length of the pool (25 metres). Back crawl is introduced at this level, as well as kneeling dives.

The Pool is Open In September !!

The Rainbow Road Indoor Pool has traditionally closed for annual maintenance the first three weeks in September. During the pool closure the main tank is drained to allow for inspection and repairs on the pool tank, tiles, grouting, jets and drains.

In June of 2015 North Salt Spring Water Works implemented stage four water restrictions that prevented the filling of public swimming pools. With these water restrictions in effect the pool was not able to be drained during the 2015 maintenance closure.

It is anticipated that similar water restrictions will occur annually between May and September unless a permanent solution to water supply and demand on SSI can be reached.

After assessing operational needs and the impact on individual users and regular rental groups such as the Stingrays Swim Club, it was decided that the annual pool shutdown will be moved to April, before water restrictions are introduced for the summer months.

So grab your suit and head on down to the pool. We’re open !!

Swim Kids 5 At this level, swimmers will fine tune their front and back crawl. Whip kick is introduced. The distance requirement is 50 metres continuous swim.

Swim Kids 6 The instructor will help the swimmers learn about ice safety. The swimmer will be required to swim 3 lengths of the pool and do a standing dive.

Swim Kids 7 Here the swimmers must swim 6 lengths of the pool using any stroke they wish. Elementary back stroke, back crawl and front crawl are refined.

Swim Kids 8 Swimmers must complete 300 metres (12 lengths) of the pool. Breast stroke is evaluated at this level and rescue breathing is introduced.

Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation (PARC) manages all activities and uses within Salt Spring community parks, many of which require a park use permit. The goal of the park use permit system is to regulate and manage special uses within community parks to minimize the impact on the natural environment, park users, park operations and facilities. A park use permit is required by anyone who intends to hold a commercial or non-commercial activity or event which attracts participants and spectators, commercial filming or reserve exclusive use of a park, trail or picnic shelter. This includes, but is not limited to, a festival, competition, tournament, show or outdoor ceremony within a community park or on a trail. Instructor Profiles Shinobu Murata

Lloyd has been a professional working musician since the ‘70s and has performed live in styles ranging from Rock to Jazz to Classical in venues from clubs to stadiums to soft seat theatres. During his formative years he studied with some of the most well known musicians in North America and has taught over 500 students in studios from Toronto to Vancouver.

His career has included touring with his own pop group as well as a theatre company and directing groups as diverse as jazz ensembles and concert choirs. He has recorded for syndicated television and movies and radio and is currently producing two albums due for release in September of 2016. At present he also hosts two jazz concert series in Sidney and Salt Spring and performs regularly with his son in a jazz quartet. Lloyd and his wife Diana also own and manage the Peninsula Academy of Music Arts.

The former owner of the Raven Street Wood Fire Café, Shinobu has lived on Salt Spring Island since 2001. She had been a restaurateur for over 17 years and operated a variety of F&B industry businesses, from a coffee shop to a pub business. She originally came from Aichi, Japan to Canada in 1997. Shinobu has worked as a cultural instructor for the Japanese Consulate in Edmonton, AB, and worked as a teacher’s assistant at the University of Alberta and Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. She has also privately taught Japanese 10, 11 and 12 for local high-school students.

She has been practicing Japanese calligraphy since the age of 5 and still keeps continuing to achieve higher levels.

Currently, she is teaching Japanese on Skype to students all over the world.

Living on Gabriola Island for nearly 20 years and trying to be as sustainable as possible when Paula Maddison had the opportunity to help milk a friend’s cow named Helga, she jumped at the chance.

Perhaps she was longing for a connection to her native state of Wisconsin and the inner Cheddar head in her was looking to surfac. Regardless of the reason, Paula has spent the past 5 years milking Helga and crafting her own delicious cheeses.

Using her extensive background in event planning and private catering, Paula designed a series of classes and started teaching the ancient art of crafting home made cheeses over 4 years ago. Using products readily available and demystifying the idea that cheese making is difficult, Paula’s classes are comprehensive, delicious and a lot of fun. Students will leave with a good understanding of the history, science and alchemy of this ancient art of fermentation as well as the ingredients used in making artisan cheeses. Bring a good appetite and be prepared to create some amazing and delicious creations worthy of the cover of Bon Appetit Magazine!

Salt Spring Island Emergency Program Workshops: Fall 2016 Disaster First Aid This three hour, non-certificate course outlines how to respond safely in the event of natural disasters. Not just a “what to do” course, this equips you with commonsense criteria for decision-making in the event of an emergency, and how to improvise treatment of minor and moderate injuries during the first 2472 hours of a disaster event. This course will equip you to keep yourself and your neighbours safe, enabling you to “keep calm, and carry on” until normal services are resumed.

Be Water Savvy Use Only What You Need

Water is one of Salt Spring Island’s most precious resources. Please join islanders as we work together to ensure that this summer, and every summer, we use this limited resource wisely, and that we respect and protect our island watersheds.

Try these handy water saving tips: Keep showers short. Use low-flow shower heads. If bathing, try a 1/4 tub only.

Run only full loads in dishwashers and washing machines.

Shut off the tap while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing up hands or dishes.

Use low-flush toilets. Flush less often.

Use a bucket to capture and reuse shower, bath and dishwater in your garden.

Inform guests from the mainland about our islands’ limited water supply, and ask them to be please be aware of keeping consumption down.
