FINANCIAL FOCU$ Five Tips for Women Business Owners Women are an integral part of the workforce, but they have had to overcome many obstacles along the way. Of course, challenges still remain, but women’s success in the working world is worth commemorating – which will happen on American Business Women’s Day Sept. 22. Are you a woman considering “setting up shop” on your own? If so, here are five tips to consider: Balance your goals. It’s possible – perhaps even likely – that your business goals will conflict with your personal financial goals. After all, if you’re purchasing new equipment or services for your business, you’ve got less money – at least for the time being – to put away for your own retirement or your children's education. Hopefully, your investment in your business will pay off in greater income, but, in any case, you will need to balance your personal and professional goals. Create a retirement plan. As mentioned above, your ability to contribute to a retirement plan may be affected by the amount you put into your business – but that certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a retirement plan. In fact, for your future financial security, it’s essential that you launch such a plan. Fortunately, small-business owners have a choice of plans, including an “owner-only” 401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA. Although the various plans have different requirements and contribution limits, they all offer tax-deferred earnings, which means your money has the opportunity to grow faster than if it were placed in a vehicle on which you paid taxes every year. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Plus, your contributions to a retirement plan may be tax deductible.

with Jerry Pittz

Arrange for “backup.” Virtually all working women are familiar with the conflict between their careers and their roles as caregivers. Women are still more likely than men to drop out of the workforce for an extended period of time to care for young children or elderly parents. And your caregiving responsibilities won’t end just because you are now a business owner. Consequently, you need to have someone you trust available to step in for you when your family obligations call you away from work. Design a succession plan. When you want to retire, would you like to keep the business in your family? If so, you’ll need to create a succession plan that works for you and whomever you’d like to take control. Such a plan can be complex, so you will need to work with your legal and tax advisors – and you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to work out the details. Build an emergency fund. Maintaining an adequate cash flow will always be a key task – one that involves your sales, billing cycles, inventory and other elements of your business. One way you can help yourself avoid troubles is to maintain an emergency fund consisting of a few months’ worth of your business expenses. You’ll want to keep this fund in a liquid, low-risk account. Running your own business can be extremely rewarding, but it’s never going to be an easy road. However, with perseverance and careful planning, you can smooth out some of the bumps along the way — and give yourself reason to celebrate American Business Women’s Day. Becker’s Corners By Susan E. Leath

Have you noticed the “Beckers Corners” sign as you drive south on Route 9W? It is located near the intersection of 9W and Route 396. 396 on the left is Maple Avenue and on the right, it is Bridge Street. The sign really should have an arrow pointing down Bridge Street because historically Becker’s Corners is where Bridge Street and Lasher Road meet. Here was the hotel, the blacksmith. the wagon shop and the doctor’s office. The one room school was nearby, and the Methodist Church was here from 1832-45. The Bethlehem Grange opened here in 1874.

The Becker family is of course intertwined with the history of Becker’s Corners, as are the Lashers, Soops and Millers, all large property owners in the area in the mid to late 1800s. The first Bethlehem Beckers we know about are Albertus and Helen. Albertus was a native of Holland and was here as early as 1767. Helen was a Van Derzee, another family with deep roots in Bethlehem. The gentleman who had the brick homestead built (it stills stands on Bridge Street) was also Albertus Becker, grandson of Albertus and Helen, husband of Polly Vander Heyden. Writing about the Becker men is hard. They alternate Albertus and Walter, father to son, for 6 generations.

Cover Photo: The Becker Homestead as it appears today.

Howell & Tenny’s Bicentennial History of Albany County 1609-1886 describes the hamlet thus “Becker’s Corners P.O., 6 miles from Albany, on the Albany and South Bethlehem plank road, is a hamlet containing 6 houses, a tavern and a fine building belong to the Grangers. Albertus The Becker Family homestead is shown here about W. Becker, postmaster.”

1899 when it was owned by LeGrange Winne. The home was built circa 1800, and came to Albertus W. Becker in 1851 when he was 17 years old. According to newspaper accounts, the property was foreclosed upon by Adam Winne in 1897. The foreclosure notice specifically excludes the Grange plot and three lots on the south side of the South Bethlehem Plank Road.

The Babcock House on Lasher Road is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built circa 1851. Dr. John Babcock (1814-1879) was a classic horse and buggy doctor who made house calls. Babcock studied at the Vermont Academy of Medicine. He was married to Hester VanDerzee, sister of Maria VanDerzee making him Albertus Becker’s uncle. p. 14

Probably the most prominent Albertus W. Becker was born in 1834 to Walter Becker and Maria VanDerzee. (Walter is the son of Albertus and Polly.) He married Anna Haswell in 1858 and they had three children Anna, Ida and Walter. All were raised in the Becker’s Corners homestead. Albertus, a Republican, was Town Supervisor in 1862 and from 18711874. At that time supervisors were elected for a one-year term at the annual town meeting held in the spring. Becker had many business and community interests including

At the time of his death in 1917, Albertus and Polly were living in Slingerlands with their son Walter. Polly died in 1924, and both are buried at Elmwood Cemetery.

There are several people relaxing on the front yard of this circa 1910 photo of the Becker’s Corner’s Hotel. Only a few are identified. The young man leaning against the tree with the large brim hat is LaGrange A. Winne. The youngster in the swing is John A. Terrell. The taller woman seated by the tree is Elizabeth Winne Osterhout. In the 1880s, the hotel at Becker’s Corners was run by Isaac Gallup. Gallup’s brother was Spencer Gallup who married Anna Becker, daughter of Albertus and Anna. Spencer was a farmer, altho not on the scale of his father-in-law. The 1880 Agricultural Schedule lists Albertus as owning 265 improved acres, Spencer rented 23.

Rabies prevention starts with animal owners

Ask the

Canterbury Vet

World Rabies Day September 28th is World Rabies Day. Rabies is a major concern worldwide, killing more than 55,000 people every year. Rabies is present on every continent except Antarctica. The most recent statistics indicated there were more than 6,000 reported cases of animal rabies in the U.S. alone. Rabies causes tens f thousands of deaths yearly, mostly in Asia and Africa. The World Health Organization, the World Organization for Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control have set a global target of zero human rabies deaths by 2030. New York State Public Health Code 2141 states that there is compulsory vaccination for every dog, cat and domesticated ferret four months of age and older. A second vaccination shall be administered within one year of the first. Subsequent vaccine administration and duration of immunity must be in compliance with the USDA licenses of vaccines used. The Wadsworth Center Rabies Laboratory in Slingerlands diagnosed almost 112 cases of rabies alone in New York in the month of June, 2017. Current month and year to date numbers of rabies suspects and diagnosed cases are available at their website: www.wadsworth.org

General Information About Rabies

• Rabies is caused by a virus that animals and people can get through exposure to the saliva or nervous tissue of a rabid animal. • It is nearly always fatal without proper post-exposure prophylaxis [treatment] (PEP). • Rabies is zoonotic, which means it can spread from animals to people. • Rabies is 100% preventable. In most cases, preventing rabies is as simple as ensuring adequate animal vaccination and control, avoiding contact with wild animals, and educating those at risk.

• All mammals that have frequent contact with humans should be vaccinated, particularly dogs, cats and ferrets. Consider vaccinating livestock and horses. • Vaccinations need to be kept up to date. • Pet owners can reduce the possibility of pets being exposed to rabies by not letting them roam free. Spaying or neutering your animal may reduce a tendency to roam or fight and thus reduce the chance that they will be exposed to rabies.

• Don’t feed or water your pets outside. Even empty bowls will attract wild and stray animals. • Keep your garbage securely covered. Open garbage will attract wild or stray animals. • Don’t keep wild animals as pets. • Teach children not to approach or handle unfamiliar animals – even if they appear friendly.

What to do if someone is bitten

• Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least fifteen minutes. • Seek medical attention as soon as possible. In rabies endemic areas the victim needs PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) a course of vaccinations and immunoglobulin. In non-rabies endemic areas, your physician will assess the need for PEP. • Applying an antiseptic may stop secondary infections (but this will not stop rabies from developing).

What to do if your pet is bitten by an unvaccinated animal • Where possible, consult your veterinarian immediately. Your animal may need booster vaccinations. • Watch your pet for signs of illness or unusual behavior for at least 45 days Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Rabies Statistics

• Best estimates are that 55,000 people die every year of rabies. That’s one person every 10 minutes. • At least half of the people who die from rabies are children under the age of 15. • In 95% of human rabies cases, the cause was a bite or scratch from an infected dog. • Rabies overwhelmingly afflicts the world’s poorest communities. p. 16

One Cleaning Contractor’s Battle with Skin Cancer And Why It Should Be a Wakeup Call for Us All

By Allison Hester, eClean Magazine

Reprinted with Permission from eClean Magazine Issue 48

Yes, you’ve been told you need to wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses in the summer. But do you really understand why? Bob Schmidt of H2O Pressure Washing in Albany, NY, can tell you. It’s an ongoing lesson that started 17 years ago at the age of 32, and has cost him more than he could have ever imagined. Like many contract cleaners, Bob worked in the sun for years with no sun protection or sunglasses, even though people constantly reminded him of the need. “I told them I’d never get skin cancer.” But in August of 2000, he developed a small “pimple” on his left lower eyelid. “I would even try to pop it, but it would continue to return.” When he went for an eye exam, the optometrist saw the bump, recognized it was a serious problem. In fact, the optometrist called the surgeon, who saw him immediately. Later that day, two eye surgeons examined his eye and informed Bob he had a basal cell stage four cancer tumor under his eyeball, and that he needed to have surgery ASAP. So surgery was scheduled for a few days later. What was supposed to be a two-hour surgery actually took six hours due to the size of the tumor in his eyelid, which also extended under his eyeball. “It was the size of my thumb!” The surgeons also removed one-fourth of Bob’s eyelid and did a skin graft from the back of his right ear. “The doctor informed me after my surgery that the skin on the top of my hands and behind my ears would typically be what they used to replace the skin for the eyes, only my skin in those areas was destroyed by the sun,” he added. They were able to bevy just enough to repair his eyelid. On the upside, Bob did have insurance coverage and worker’s comp coverage on himself through the landscaping company he owned at that time. The original doctor felt that it should be a worker’s comp claim due to working in the sun; the worker’s comp doctors, however, disagreed. Additionally, Bob had employees and the company was able to continue operating while he was recovering. Bob was given five years remission. p. 30

In 2002, the cancer returned again to his left lower eyelid. Bob again had surgery to the same area. They removed more of his left eyelid and used skin from the roof of his mouth to repair the lid. The surgery took eight hours and required 400 stitches. The next day, the doctor explained that the cancer had progressed to the most aggressive type of melanoma. “Melanoma is bad, but this type was the worst. It is referred to as ‘the octopus of cancers’ because of how it spreads, and if they don’t get every leg from the main body removed during surgery it will regrow a new body and legs and spread again!” He was again given a 5-year remission. In 2003, 2005, and twice in 2006, the cancer returned and was more aggressive each time. Bob underwent several surgeries and multiple reconstructions to his eyelid. In 2008, cancer again returned and more advanced surgery was needed. This time it took 18 hours and required removing Bob’s entire left lower and top eyelids, removing all the cancer under his eyeball to the roof of his mouth, and removing all tear ducts. They replaced it with 75 percent of the skin from inside his mouth. “They grafted the skin from the inside of my mouth with a tool that was custom-made for my mouth,” Bob explained. “It was similar to an oldfashioned cheese slicer that my mom used.” This time the surgery required 2500 stitches inside and outside his eyelid. “I also had to sleep sitting up for two months. I was told not to cough or sneeze for a week because it could tear the grafts.” After more reconstruction surgery and not being able to work for a year, Bob returned to work wearing sunscreen and sunglasses and thought a lot differently about skin cancer. He was again was given another five years for remission . He met the five year remission date in 2013. But that November, he noticed a small bump in the corner of his left eye. He called his doctor who had him come in that same day. The cancer had returned.

The day after a two-hour pet scan, Bob’s doctor explained he had a cancerous tumor that was 1-1/4 inches long with “multiple legs” that bridged both his eye and through his nasal cavity. Shortly before his surgery that December, Bob was required to sign legal paperwork stating he understood that the surgery could blind him in one or both eyes, or he could bleed to death during the surgery. He also was told he would not be able to work for two years due to multiple reconstruction surgeries that would be required. “I signed my name on the line.” A week before his scheduled surgery, Bob’s surgeon’s group called to ask if he would be interested in trying an alternate to surgery. Bob said yes. There was a new chemo drug that doctors were wanting to test, and Bob fit the needed profile 100 percent. The procedure required having 185 days of chemo every day, and there would be three primary side effects – loss of taste, loss of hair, and cramping. “It was the most painful experience I’ve ever been through.” The cost of the chemo treatment was over $1 million, but was paid for by the drug company since it was still experimental. After a second pet scan, his doctors explained he would need to be checked every 60 days for the rest of his life. It is now 2017 and Bob is still cancer free, but he has until 2019 for a fiveyear remission, and he’s been told he’s a high-risk cancer patient. “Take it from me, skin cancer is something to think about,” he concluded. “I always said it would never happen to me. I was wrong! Be sure to protect yourself, your family, your friends, and your employees from the sun!” To learn more about detecting skin cancer and how to protect yourself and your employees, read “Outdoor Workers and Skin Cancer” from eClean Issue 35 (http:// eclean.uberflip.com/i/550043-ecleanissue-35-online/37)

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Hello Constant Readers… I am back to the bookshop after my incredible vacation on Sebec Lake, Maine with my husband and Seamus. We couldn’t have asked for better weather while there. The water was crystalline, about 74 degrees, and the days went from low 60s to the high 80s. The bald eagle & eaglet flew in front of the camp daily, the loons sang out at night and I even swam up to one during my daily swims, only feet away. We experienced a mother loon teaching her still fuzzy brown baby to swim while the father loon swam a protective circle around them. Where do you get an opportunity to swim continuously without turning around? I swam miles every day, often with my exercise flippers and Batman kickboard. We hiked miles daily with Seamus, who often took off following his nose. One day he was such a countrified dog, he had nature all over him, stuck in his long fur. I brought Seamus in for a swim, shampooed him with special soap and then let him swim to shore. Oh, did I get the stink eye! When we went out in the boat, he wore his bright orange lifejacket and hugged my feet…just not a fan of the water like his Mama. I read 5 books while on vacation and strongly recommend the following: The Bill Hodges Trilogy by Stephen King (of course) which is also known as the Mr. Mercedes books. This detective series does have a paranormal twist in the later books, but all very realistic. This is by far one of my favorite characters ever written by Stephen King. It is now a series on DirectTV (which we had access to in Maine) and we did see 3 episodes. Sadly, I can’t watch it here at home, because I do not have DirectTV. If you do, it is carried on Audience channel. Brendan Gleason plays Hodges and I shall ever here that Irish brogue in my head. This is a series that I might revisit again in the future. The only other King book I have read more than once is “The Stand”. I also highly recommend “The Yard” by Alex Grecian. It is the first book in the Scotland Yard Mysteries. I loved everything about it! The setting is in Scotland Yard following the Jack the Ripper case and the retirement of the detectives who could not solve the case. The story brings together the commissioner, a detective, constables and a forensic doctor to solve the gruesome murder of one of their own. Very similar to “The Alienist” by Caleb Carr, the Victorian setting, the attention to detail to life for each character in this grimy, gloomy England also was similar to BBC’s “Ripper Street”. I will be starting the next book in the series next week. I always bring a Carl Hiaasen on vacation because he cleanses the palate with a tight mystery set in Florida with scantily dressed women, drunken ex-private detectives, police, the dumbest criminals ever along with a very strong environmental message. I read “Skinny Dip” which I must admit is tied with my favorite by him, “Lucky You”. I have a few still in the shop…and if you haven’t read a Hiaasen they are slick, irreverent and very well written. I finally read a Robert Crais (Elvis Cole) novel. Written in the 90s I envisioned Tom Selleck in his Magnum PI mode as the main character. Set in California it involves

p. 36

crooked government officials, charismatic magnates and a struggling private detective! No wonder his books are hard to keep in the shop! I read daily on vacation because, like my swimming, I could do it continuously without interruption! Did you know that reading can be a wonderful (and healthy) escape from the stress of everyday life? Simply by opening a book, you allow yourself to be invited into a literary world that distracts you from your daily stressors. Reading can even relax your body by lowering your heart rate, slow your breathing and ease the tension in your muscles. The book you choose doesn't have to be on any "best-seller" list. Reading only helps reduce your stress if you pick something you enjoy that won't upset you. Choose a novel where you can escape into another world. Take note of how you feel after your reading break. I can recall most books that I read at the lake, on the couch in the shop or on my chaise snuggling with Seamus. In September I will be featuring a very special sale in the shop. On September 21, 22, 23 all hardcover novels will be $5.00!!! There is an abundance of hardcovers in mystery, suspense, action, best sellers, science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, health, political science, new age and biographies. Also, as a special thank you…for every $20 in sales you will be able to take a free hardcover from a large selection of books. Tell your friends and family! I surely would love to see you during that sale! In closing…just a reminder as school starts… help your child to understand the joy of reading books. Set the example and bring them in to Tattered Pages to experience the little bookshop that offers service… selection…and value! Until next month…Trish and Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages, 365 Feura Bush Rd. Bethlehem YMCA Gears Up For Fall

my on! nd ply oa rs. art our ny ess ou. ld. an in

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer, and the leaves will soon begin to fall. If you dread the end of summer, the best way to cope with it is to get to the Bethlehem YMCA and, literally, work it out. A new session of fun fall programs is underway at the Y for kids, teens and adults.

ale els in on, ew for ver nd

Just a few highlights of our comprehensive fall program include:

s… ks. ges e…

P!

Before I describe the highlights of our YMCA fall program, please mark your calendars for September 29th – the date of the Bethlehem YMCA’s annual membership appreciation picnic. This popular event features food, music, games and activities. It’s free for Y members and families so we can show our gratitude for the wonderful people who make the Bethlehem Y our community center and a great charitable organization. The picnic will be from 5 to 8 pm at the pavilion behind the Y.

YMCA Travel Basketball – Teams will be set up by elementary and middle school grades; Open gym nights begin in October, followed by weekly team practices in November, and games starting in December. All games will be on Saturdays at one of our local YMCAs. Coach Scott Burger will be teaching traditional basketball skills with a unique twist during our Complete Player Basketball Program, beginning September 7th and running each Thursday night for plays ages 8 to 18. The Bethlehem Y will also have a youth basketball instructional program for younger children, Pre-K to third grade, on Saturdays starting November 4th. Learn To Swim -- The Y will be offering its fall session of swim lessons beginning the week of September 4th. We offer classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings as well as Saturday mornings. There are select classes offered in the morning hours on Mondays and Wednesdays. BAY Rays swim team registration is open now and the team will begin practicing the week of September 18th.

Tumbling Classes – Rolling around and having fun is a perfect exercise activity for tots and tykes ages 2 to 5. The Y has tumbling classes that focus on physical and social development. Children will learn basic gymnastics skills while improving fine and gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination. In addition to listening, taking turns, and following directions, we will introduce basic gymnastic skills. Classes are structured, but not rigid, so kids can channel their energy while learning to socialize with others in a safe and fun environment. Youth Tennis - A revolutionary change in the way kids 10 and under learn and play tennis is happening at the Bethlehem Y and across the country. Smaller courts, lighter and lower bouncing balls and smaller and lighter racquets fit your child's size. It all makes it easy and fun for them to hit, play and score from the start-while developing skills that will last a lifetime. Our instructor, Mike Muscato, is USTA and PTR certified and will bring his vast knowledge of tennis to this program. Available for ages 3-10 on Wednesdays or Saturdays beginning September 6th. Youth in Government is a very successful program that helps high school students learn more about government and politics, and encourages participation in our democracy as they work towards a state conference at the Capitol in March. Achievers Program – This program is tailored to middle and high school students that enjoy giving their time to help others. The Y works with achievers on community service, awareness topics, leadership development and building community. For more information on any of these, or other programs, please stop by the Bethlehem YMCA front desk, give us a call at 518-439-5817, or visit cdymca.org.

Member, Bethlehem YMCA Board of Advisors

Learn To Skate – If you prefer your water frozen, our Learn to Skate program for ages 3 to adult, begins October 1st and meets on Sundays throughout the season. The YMCA also offers private learn to skate lessons. The Bethlehem YMCA is one of only four Ys in the country with an ice rink, so take advantage of it by learning to skate.
