FINANCIAL FOCU$

Father's Day: Tools Are Great for Father's Day ~ and for Investors

If you’re a dad, you may well be pleased to unwrap some tools as Father’s Day gifts. Of course, it might be a stereotype that all men are handy at repairs; women certainly can be every bit as good when it comes to building and fixing things. In fact, the construction process is valuable for anyone to learn – and the same skills that go in to creating and mending physical objects also can be applied to financial projects – such as working toward a comfortable retirement.

Here are a few of those skills: Diagnosing the challenge –

A good craftsperson knows that the first step toward accomplishing any outcome is to assess the challenge. So, for example, if you want to build some bookshelves right into the wall, you’ll need to locate the wall studs, determine if you have adequate space for the shelving you want and allow room for future expansion. Similarly, if you want to retire at a certain age, you need to consider the key variables: your current and future income (How much can you count on from your retirement plans?), where you'll live (Will you downsize or relocate? Will you rent or own a house or condominium?) And what you'll do as a retiree (Will you travel extensively or stick close to home? Will you do some type of work for pay or pursue your hobbies and volunteer?).

Assembling the right tools and materials –

To put together your bookshelf, you will need the right tools – saw, hammer, drill, sander and so on – and the right building materials – plywood, nails, screws, glue, brackets, moldings and so on. And to work toward a comfortable retirement, you'll also need the right tool – in the form of a long-term financial strategy, based on your specific retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon – along with the appropriate materials – the mix of investments you use to carry out that strategy. These investments include those you’ve placed in your IRA, your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and those held outside your formal retirement accounts. Ideally, you want a diversified mix of investments capable

of providing growth potential over time, within the context of your individual risk tolerance.

Review your work –

Once you’ve finished your bookshelf, you occasionally may need to make some minor adjustments or repairs in response to slippage, cracks or other issues that can develop over time. As an investor, you also may need to tweak your financial strategy periodically and adjust your investment mix – not necessarily because something is broken, but to accommodate changes in your life, such as a new job, new family situation and new goals. Furthermore, over time, your risk tolerance may change, and this needs to be reflected in your array of investments.. Consequently, conducting an annual portfolio review with your financial professional should be a priority. Tools are a big deal on Father’s Day. But the constructionrelated tasks they represent, physically and symbolically, go beyond any one holiday and can be used by anyone interested in working toward a solid financial future.

Then

& Now

Ice Cream! By Susan E. Leath

One of the best things about living in Upstate New York is the many soft serve ice cream stands that open up come the spring. A delicious reward for withstanding our awful winters. The history of ice cream, however, is surrounded by myths and marketing. Did the ancient Romans really have ice cream? Probably not. They are known to have brought ice and snow down from the mountains for their drinks. But that is flavored ice, not ice cream. Slushee anyone?

COVER: Nothing puts a smile on your face like a giant twist cone! Did Marco Polo really eat ice cream during his Silk Road travels, and bring that idea back to Italy in the 1300s? History.org makes the convincing argument that if he experienced ice cream in China, he certainly would have written about the novelty. But he did not. The website goes on to theorize that what really came out of China in those early days was the knowledge of how to freeze things using salt and ice – the endothermic effect. As the article says, “Ice alone only makes things cold.” You need the endothermic effect to get ingredients cold enough to actually freeze and make ice cream. How about Thomas Jefferson? Did he introduce ice cream to America? He enjoyed it enough during his 1784 trip to France to jot down a recipe (2 bottles of good cream, 6 yolks of eggs, 1/ lb. sugar to be flavored with vanilla). How

An article about ice cream wouldn’t be complete without mention of the Toll Gate Ice Cream and Coffee Shop in Slingerlands. Established by the Zautner family in 1949, the shop continued in business producing delicious ice cream in house until just a few years ago.

p. 12

This undated photo of Ross’s Ice Cream and Hamburger probably dates to the 1970s.

about Martha Washington? She didn’t invent it, but she did serve it at Mt. Vernon. Martha and George acquired a “cream machine for ice” in 1784, and built an ice house on the estate that year. Keep in mind, during those Colonial and early National years, sugar was expensive and only the wealthy could access ice year-round. When the ice industry kicked into high gear in the mid1850s, ice started to become more readily available. Sugar prices came down and inventors patented hand-cranked ice cream freezers. Delicious ice cream was coming for the masses. It is no surprise that ice cream was popular locally. In the 1840s Charles Anderson was advertising his Ice Cream Saloon and Confectionary on Broadway in Albany. In the 1870’s, you could travel down to Coeymans and visit J. Wiggins’ Ice Cream Saloon on South Main Street. Wiggins promised to keep a choice selection of flavors constantly on hand. Strawberry and ice cream festivals were very common. One page of the June 21, 1893 Altamont Enterprise lists seven different ones happening including the ladies of the M.E. church in Clarksville whose literary entertainment included an ice cream social with “patriotic songs and appropriate speaking.” Nor did they limit their ice cream to summer time. New Year’s Night 1893, the M.E. ladies served a chicken supper and ice cream encouraging anyone who “favors their appetite” to attend. In the 1930’s Wager’s Ice Cream, Helderberg Creamery’s Ho-Maid Ice Cream and Fro-Joy Ice Cream were all popular brands. Getting back to the present day and delicious soft serve, Bethlehem boasts several establishments. Ross’s over on New Scotland Road has been in existence as early as 1954 when Ross’ Picnic Stand advertised in the Spotlight. In the late 50s and 60s it was known as Ross’ Road Stand. The website for Jim’s Tastee Freez on Delaware Avenue says it started out in 1963 as Bill’s Tastee Freez and became Jim’s in 1980. Intriguingly, there is an ad in the 1954 TriVillage Directory for “Tastee Freez – America’s Soft Ice Cream, Delaware & Grant, Elsmere 9-3912.” That is the same location and telephone number for Jim’s. (By the way, Tastee Freez the brand got its start in 1950 when Leo Moranz invented a new soft-serve pump and freezer. He

partnered with marketer Harry Axene in a system where franchisees could use the name Taste Freez in exchange for renting the equipment.) Over at Jericho Drive In on 9W, Twist Ice Cream Shoppe opened in 2007. When I moved here in 1995, we were urged to go over to Houghtaling’s Market in Feura Bush for soft serve ice cream. While not in Bethlehem, it is just over the town line, now serving under the Mauro’s Menu name. There are of course many other summer time ice cream stands in our area. What is your favorite place?

This tin ice cream scoop with its heart shaped finial is found in the collection of the Bethlehem Historical Association.

Be sure to stop by the Bethlehem Historical Association’s Cedar Hill Schoolhouse for their annual Ice Cream Social – a traditional that has been going on for at least 25 years. The date is Sunday, June 9 from 1 to 4 P.M. The location is 1003 River Road, Selkirk. Enjoy free ice cream courtesy of Stewart’s Shops and the latest local history exhibits.

Town historian Susan Leath’s new book, Bethlehem People and Places, explores Bethlehem, New York’s unique history through 36 illustrated articles.

Places ground our history. People make history lively. Come along on the journey as Leath follows her curiosity in her hometown of Bethlehem. Read about Victorian and vernacular farmhouses, and about the families that made these types of building home. Find out the story of World War I veteran John Adams Dyer, Hudson River light keeper Warren Welch and architect Grace Slingerland. Wonder about how Delmar got its name, and just where is the hamlet of Frazertown. Author Susan E. Leath was appointed Bethlehem Town Historian in 2007. She is continually inspired by the people who generously share their family history. Leath believes local history opens the way to the wider sweep of our national story. She invites you to be curious about the everyday people and places around you. Ask the

Canterbury Vet Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) Much has been discussed in recent months about the potential association between grain-free pet foods and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. DCM is a cardiac disease in which the heart muscles become weak, reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. Disease progression leads to enlargement of the heart chambers, possible valve leakage and fluid accumulation in the lungs resulting in congestive heart failure. Dogs with mild disease may not show clinical signs, whereas in other cases the condition can be life-threatening. Some breeds, especially large and giant breeds, have a predisposition to DCM. These breeds include Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, Newfoundlands, Irish Wolfhounds, and Saint Bernards. While DCM is less common in medium and small breeds, English and American Cocker Spaniels are also predisposed to this condition. In July, 2018, the FDA released an alert for veterinary professionals and pet owners regarding reports of DCM in dogs that had eaten pet foods containing peas, lentils, other legume seeds or potatoes as main ingredients. The reports were concerning because DCM was being noted in dogs not typically prone to the disease, such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Whippets, Bulldogs and Shih Tzus. The incidence of DCM in these breeds has appeared to increase when they were fed grain-free, vegetarian/vegan, or exotic ingredient pet foods. One potential culprit in these cases is the lack of the amino acid taurine in grain-free pet foods. However, while taurine deficiency may play a role in the identified DCM cases, it is unclear whether taurine deficiency is a cause or merely an association with yet unknown other dietary components. Some breeds may be more sensitive to changes in nutritional components in their food, which may suggest breed-related differences in metabolism. Alternatively, the balance of amino acids in some dog food formulations may be inappropriate, or the amino acids may not be well absorbed by the pet. So what’s a pet owner to do? First, like all questions concerning your pet’s health, you should consult your veterinarian, not the internet. Together, you can evaluate the pros and cons of your dog’s diet and monitor for signs of DCM. Healthy dogs should be fed a diet that contains standard ingredients (chicken, beef, rice, corn and wheat). Dogs that have a medical condition that requires a nonstandard diet (ie a prescription veterinary diet) should be fed a diet that has undergone extensive feeding trials through the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). DCM related to diet may be reversible if it is detected early. Dogs diagnosed with DCM that are eating a diet with nonstandard ingredients should be switched to a p. 22

diet that contains standard ingredients as noted above. Your veterinarian will determine appropriate diagnostics if there is suspicion of DCM in your dog. Whole blood and plasma taurine concentrations should be measured in dogs with DCM being fed a grain-free diet, and a dietary taurine supplement should be added if concentrations are found to be low or low-normal. Followup echocardiography can help assess for improvement in heart function. In addition, screening echocardiography should be obtained for all household dogs being fed the diet. Finally, for dogs with suspected diet-related DCM, pet owners should save food samples and product labels for everything they are feeding, including treats and supplements. All cases should be reported to the FDA via their Safety Reporting Portal. Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man, who never reads, lives only one!” George R.R. Martin Greetings fellow readers, I recently had a conversation with one of the shop’s great readers who I hadn’t seen in a while. After the obligatory cuddle with Seamus (the #1 In-Store Pet as voted in a recent Capital Region magazine) she shared with me that she had undergone a few eye surgeries. This made reading very difficult. She said that not reading was like going thru addiction withdrawal! Now recovered, she was so pleased to be able to read again. She filled her arms with paperbacks and cashed out with the biggest smile! I believe the quote above from the author of the “Game of Thrones” series, that when one reads it is as if they live thousands of lives. The author’s words take up residence in our head, the setting is imagined, and one has a sideline seat to the action, intrigue, romance & mystery! I have had some wonderfully lively conversations about books with patrons. We agreed that when we are in-sync with a book, we even dream about it when sleeping! I was tagged with the nickname of “Bookworm” when I was still quite young. I taught myself to read (well, Disney books w/ records played an important part) when I was 3. I remember listening to stories along with the 45rpm record, lying on my bed, following the words with my finger. My love of reading tapped into my creative side and I grew in areas of music, dance, & art and was rarely bored as a child. I remember the 60s as a time of bike riding, board game marathons, dance lessons, horseback riding (and grooming horses in barter for riding), learning to play the guitar, listening to music, playing in our “Narnia” (the Pine Bush area of Westmere), drawing, crafting, swimming, singing and reading. We were not “attached to electronics” and we had to research for answers in books. I would babysit for money to buy books at Woolworth’s. I was bedridden for a period of time in 8th grade and asked to have all the books from our basement brought upstairs. I read my father’s Books of Knowledge (a wonderful mix of literature, articles and essays, a kind of potpourri of knowledge from the 1930s), the Golden Book Encyclopedia and the Hardy Boys. I read them cover to cover. Amazing how that “sunken knowledge” pops up even today in my brain, especially during Jeopardy! Reading is still one of the most affordable forms of entertainment; and here at Tattered Pages, with a trade credit account, it is the best source of books outside of a flea market/garage sale. I have had moments of self-reflection over the name of my shop, Tattered Pages. I had an individual comment that the name connotes old, musty, ripped books! The name came from a famous bookshop in Paris, France, Tea & Tattered Pages, where one can buy English print books and have a cup of tea in the café. We dropped the “Tea” when the shop changed hands. I kept the name when I became owner June, 2013! I have learned so much as the owner of the shop this past year, even though I had

managed the store for 7 years! I like people who make the time to read!” We are in this location in Glenmont Center Square now 7 years but many have just “discovered us”. ◊ If you haven’t ventured into my shop here are a few facts that may entice you to come in to my locally owned/operated bookshop: ◊ All books have been previously owned, but many are actually new or in new condition. ◊ All books are reduced in price between 20-60% off original publisher’s prices. ◊ The shop is “organized” with books in alphabetical order, separated in genres. ◊ The store inventory is all on a data base, where I can tell you if a title is in stock. ◊ Over 19,000 titles are in my inventory of fiction & non-fiction. Prices start at 75cents! ◊ I carry large print books, coffee table size books, some older “collectible books”. ◊ I do not accept books left outside the shop in boxes! Who would do that anyways! ◊ I do not “buy” books but offer a unique trade credit program that you can ask about. ◊ I do not accept encyclopedias, condensed books or any with odor or dirt, right? ◊ For every $20 spent you get to choose from a selection of free books. ◊ Last year I made close to $3,000 in donations to local charities, events & organizations. ◊ If I don’t have a book, I will gladly order a book for you and give you the best break possible! ◊ I have a Facebook page: Tattered Pages, LLC and would love you to “Like” us! ◊ I accept major credit cards & checks. I put books on reserve for you. ◊ Easy to find, right in Glenmont Center Square right next to Romo’s Pizzeria. I would hope that you might come to see what a unique little store with a huge selection can offer. From Sci-Fi to Romance to History to Children’s to Crafting to Religion to Cookbooks to Mystery, I have something for everyone. For the month of June, I am offering an additional 10% off on all children’s books from board book to young adult! You could easily purchase 3 chapter books for under $10! Don’t forget to use Tattered Pages for your child’s required reading list. If I don’t have it in the shop, I will get it for you at great prices where I pass the savings on to you! My recommendations for this month are: “Paper Towns” by John Green, “Heart Shaped Box” by Joe Hill, and I will be finishing Karen Marie Moning’s “Iced” in the next few days, then I am on to Stephen King’s “Joyland”. For your beach read, poolside adventure, picnic romance… check out Tattered Pages! Until next month…Happy Reading!
