Canterbury Vet Spaying and Neutering Each year 6 – 8 million cats and dogs enter the U.S. shelter system. Fewer than half find forever homes. To help turn the tide on the staggering statistics, February has been designated National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month broadens its outreach on World Spay Day, which takes place each year on the final Thursday of February. Created to combat the crisis of pet overpopulation around the globe, animal lovers are encouraged to spread the word through social media and help to raise funds for the paws cause. Not only does altering our four-legged friends play a significant role in ‘fixing’ the problem of pet overpopulation, spaying and neutering can also enrich and possibly save the life of your own four-legged family member. Sterilization can help to curb potentially perilous behavior, such as the urge to roam, which makes a pet more vulnerable to diseases and more likely to be injured or killed by various outdoor dangers, including passing cars. Spaying and neutering also adds to the longevity of our furry companions. Altered dogs live an average of 3 years longer and cats 5 years more by reducing the risk of certain cancers, according to American Veterinary Medical Association reports. Females are at lesser risk for infections of the reproductive tract (pyometra) and mammary tumors (breast cancer). Males are less likely to develop testicular tumors and will be less prone to prostate and associated urinary problems. Cats, in particular, will have less exposure to fatal diseases such as Feline Leukemia (FelV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) if they are spayed/neutered. They will fight less and will not be mating, which means they will be avoiding the most common ways these feline diseases are spread. Behavior problems are lessened when a pet is spayed or neutered. Males tend to exhibit fewer testosterone-driven behaviors, such as urine marking, aggression and roaming. Females are less likely to fight as well. Obviously, your pet will not be able to reproduce, helping to control pet overpopulation, which is a risk to animal welfare in general. There are many common misconceptions about spaying/ neutering that need to be debunked once and for all. “She needs to have one litter before spaying.” There is no medical research to support this supposition. Spaying your female pet will not only save her the misery of heat cycles throughout her life, but as noted above, will also reduce her risk of mammary cancer and eliminate the risk of uterine and ovary cancer, as well as pyometra “I'd like for my kids to witness the Miracle of Birth.” Rather than add to the pet overpopulation problem, ask yourself if this kind of live experience is worth having your kids watch(isn’t that what YouTube is for?). If you want the "kitten or puppy experience," consider fostering a litter from a shelter or for a rescue group. You will have the joy of seeing them in their "cute" period and you will have the satisfaction of helping, rather than contributing to the problem.

“Spaying or neutering will make my dog/cat fat and lazy.” All pets have the potential of getting fat and lazy. Not overfeeding your pet and engaging with her in interactive exercise will keep her in prime physical condition. Finally, there are the numbers. In 7 years, one female cat and its young can produce 100 to 400 kittens. 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the USA alone. Compared to only 10,000 human births, it’s clear that there will never be enough homes for all these animals. Almost 8,000,000 dogs and cats are euthanized each year because there are no homes for them. Please spay and neuter your pets and support the local organizations helping to prevent pet overpopulation. As always, ask your vet if you have any questions about your pets. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Consider Some New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions As we open the door to 2017, you might be thinking about some New Year’s resolutions. What’s on your list this year? More visits to the gym? Learning a new language? Mastering the perfect beef bourguignon? All worthy ambitions, of course, but why not also include some financial resolutions? By reviewing your needs and goals, you can identify some resolutions that are particularly relevant to your own situation. But here are a few suggestions: Build an emergency fund. If you needed a major car repair or a new furnace, or faced some other large, unanticipated expense, could you cope with it? If you didn’t have the money readily available, you might have to dip into those investments intended for long-term goals, such as retirement. Instead, build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk account. Cut down on debts. It’s not easy to cut down on one’s debt load. But if you can find ways to reduce your debts, you’ll help improve your overall financial picture. Many debts are not “useful” – that is, they don’t carry any tax advantages – so every dollar you spend to pay down those debts is a dollar you could use to invest for your future.

with Jerry Pittz

your objectives and risk tolerance. Therefore, if your salary goes up this year, or if you think you can find other ways to free up some money, increase your contributions to your retirement plan. Review your portfolio. Is your investment portfolio still on track toward helping you meet your long-term goals? If not, you may need to make some changes. You’ll also want to study your investment mix to make sure it still accurately reflects your risk tolerance. Over time, and often without your taking any significant actions, your portfolio can “drift” to a place where you are taking on too much risk – or even too little risk – for your needs and long-term objectives. If this happens, you may need to “rebalance” your holdings. Avoid mistakes. None of us can avoid all mistakes, in life and in our investment activities. But as an investor, you’ll clearly benefit from minimizing your errors. For example, it’s generally a mistake to jump out of the market in response to a period of volatility. If you wait for things to “calm down” before investing again, you might miss out on the opportunity to participate in the next market rally. Think long term. Keep this in mind: You’re not investing for today or tomorrow, but for many years from now. Try to keep a long-term focus when making all your key investment decisions. By doing so, you can avoid overreacting to shortterm developments, such as a sudden drop in the market or a “momentous” political event that actually decreases in importance as time goes by. Try to follow these financial resolutions as best as you can. You could make 2017 a year to remember. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Boost contributions to your retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Your earnings have the potential to grow tax deferred and your contributions may lower your taxable income. Plus, most plans offer a selection of investment options, so you can choose the investment mix that fits

Frazertown and Old Glenmont By Susan E. Leath

Have you ever heard of Frazertown? These days the town of Bethlehem is all about our hamlets, currently defined as Delmar, Elsmere, Glenmont, North Bethlehem, Selkirk, Slingerlands, and South Bethlehem. Frazertown was a Bethlehem hamlet circa 1851 located in the vicinity Glenmont Road and River Road. While recognition of Frazertown is long gone, the area of Anders Lane and Old River Road points to some fascinating facets of our local history.

Greetings From Glenmont proclaims this postcard. New York State Museum Bulletin 173, published in 1914, includes a report from the Geographical Survey about Albany County place names. Glenmont is described simply as “Hamlet. Fancy Name.”

Today, near the bottom of the hill of Glenmont Road is Anders Lane. Anders is a short, steep and narrow strip of road with just three houses, two of which date to the early 1800s if not before. The 1866 Beers map of Bethlehem shows one of these as belonging J. Frazier. This is likely the home of John and Ann Frazier, the family for whom the hamlet was named. The U. S. Census provides a glimpse into the Frazier family life. The 1850 census reports that John, age 41, was a laborer. His wife Ann was 30 and they had three children. A relative, maybe a brother, named Robert Fraser (age 55 and a carpenter) also lived in the household. In 1860, the couple is still there with real estate valued at $300 and their family had grown to seven children. The oldest child listed is Jane Ann, age 16 and a “tailoress”. 10 years later the value of the family’s

Interestingly, the 1866 Beers map of Bethlehem does not show the place names Frazertown or Glenmont. Bethlehem Centre however is in bold print.

A newspaper clipping affixed to the back of the post card notes that “Things look bright for big doings at the Abbey on September 25.” Regarding the upcoming races, it notes that “the best horses of Woodland Park will be there” and that “a rare day of sport is in store for followers of the pacing and trotting game. Guess we’ll all have to be at the Abbey”

real estate increased to $1000. John and his 23 year old son David are both listed as teamsters. By 1880, the five daughters of the household, ranging in age from 22 to 36 are living at home with John and Ann. Jane Ann is still a dressmaker, Elizabeth is a tailoress and Kate is a domestic servant. There is no occupation listed for Mary and Sarah. A quick hop from Anders Lane is Old River Road which is a short section that was bypassed when Route 144/ River Road was rebuilt. This narrow street is has six homes, 4 of which predate 1865. The 1866 Beers map identifies several families who might have lived in these houses. One is Miss Sager. Based on the 1870 census, this is likely Catherine Sager. Catherine, a dressmaker, is listed as the head of a household with real estate valued at $1500. Another is James McGill who lived across the street. He is a farmer and living in his household are Margaret Sager, age 63, and Josephine Sager age 24. Both of

them are tailoresses. Do you see the pattern here? Jane Ann and Elizabeth Frazier were also tailoresses. One wonders about Catherine Sager’s dressmaking empire. Frazertown transitioned to the name Glenmont in the 1880s. The West Shore Railroad extended their Albany Branch from Ravena north through Selkirk and established a station they called Glenmont. In 1897 Glenmont was described as “a station and post office on the West Shore Railroad about a mile below Albany. Considerable moulding sand is shipped here. There are no stores or other business interests in the place.” Despite the above reference, there was at least one other business of note in Glenmont, the Abbey Hotel. Located on River Road just north of the families mentioned above, the Abbey was a Bethlehem landmark for over 200 years reportedly dating back to the early 1700s. Through its many incarnations, the Abbey Hotel offered weary travelers of the River Road and the Hudson River lodging and refreshment serving as a gathering spot for reunions and politicians. It was later a well-known roadhouse and even rumored to have been a prohibition era speakeasy. The Abbey was vacant by the 1940s and razed in 1961.

Henry Parr, and later his son George, ran the Abbey Hotel for many years beginning in 1881. Parr Island, attached to the grounds of the Abbey by the causeway seen in the postcard, was the site of many a clambake, baseball game, horse race, and human athletic contest.

In Henry Child’s 1870 Gazetteer of and Business Directory of Albany County, John Frazier and David Frazier are listed as teamsters. Teamsters, like the one shown here in front of the Abbey Hotel, are the people who drove a team of draft animals that pulled a wagon or other vehicle. Standing on the left is likely Henry Parr or his son George. (Courtesy of the Wisconsin Historical Association.)

The Abbey Hotel is shown in a circa 1910 postcard.

In today’s usage, the place name Glenmont stretches to cover a wide swath of Bethlehem near the intersection of Route 9W, Feura Bush Road and Glenmont Road. When Frazertown was still known, this area was called Babcocks Corners. By 1866, it became known as Bethlehem Center, a name which seems nowadays to have given way to Glenmont.

BETHLEHEM Y BRINGS JOY TO AFGHAN FAMILY

Fifteen years of war and terror has forced millions of people to flee Afghanistan. The Taliban murdered over 3,500 civilians in 2015. Now over two and a half million Afghans are living abroad seeking peace, freedom and happiness. One local family that experienced death and the destruction at the hands of the Taliban has now found freedom in America, peace in the Capital District, and happiness at the Bethlehem YMCA. The names are fictitious, but their story is true.

Leena and her teenage son Adeeb arrived in America from Afghanistan in the fall of 2015, after Leena’s husband and older son were killed by the Taliban. They came here together with Najja, the deceased son’s wife, and their three children, ages 8, 12, and 15. The two women raise their children together in low-income housing in Albany. The living conditions are very poor, but still better than what they left behind, and they are thankful for the quiet at night. Najja works as a chamber maid at a local hotel and Adeeb works at a hotel as a dishwasher. The family of six barely gets by on two small incomes. Each member of the family is very talented with crafts. They make beautiful rugs, a trade they brought with them to America. They also make hats, gloves, aprons, and jewelry. They hope one day to have a sewing machine. Leena is also a bread-maker. The kids love going to school as they did not attend school in Afghanistan. Instead of school, they worked to help support their family. They have made great strides overcoming their biggest challenge, learning the language. Najja and Leena take night classes in English to speed up their progress. Not being able to read or communicate has made everyday life very tough. They often got off the bus at the wrong stops. The families’ experience here could be very insular and frightening if not for the support and encouragement of Bethlehem YMCA, especially Y volunteers Diane Lykes, Brendan Mooney, Bruce Bell, Nick Isaacs and Matt Tedeschi. They have been a godsend to this family and, together with the Y staff, they have once again brought joy to people who once knew only fear. The entire Bethlehem YMCA staff has been very kind to them and made them feel welcome every time they walk through the door. The family, particularly the children, have become frequent visitors to the Y. Barry O'Keefe, who was a lifeguard at the Bethlehem Y, has been giving the kids swimming lessons every week. The 15-year-old made so much progress he made the swim team at his school. They also work out and play basketball at the Bethlehem Y, although their first love is soccer.

The two youngest children went to Y summer camp and had the time of their lives. So many experiences for them are new. They had never jumped in a bouncy house; they had never eaten an ice cream cone. They had never eaten in a restaurant and had someone serve them, until Y volunteers took them out to experience an American Thanksgiving dinner. When the Afghan family finished their meal, they cleared their places and took their dishes into the restaurant kitchen. During a late summer week at camp, our Y staff noticed the two Afghan children had no food for lunch, other than a small bag of chips they shared. There was no food at home. Yet, they smiled and were happy to be safe and having fun at camp. But a miracle was about to happen.

The CAP COM Federal Credit Union, a generous supporter of the YMCA, presented the family with a $500 gift card for food and school clothes. In addition, the kids received new backpacks filled with school supplies thanks to the backpack donation program sponsored by the Y, CAP COM, and the Town of Bethlehem. The families’ response was beyond magical. They were grateful and overwhelmed. Hugs and tears followed by everyone involved. This amazing, inspiring story, is made possible by the work of YMCA volunteers and staff, and by the donations from our members and community supporters to the YMCA Annual Campaign. The 2017 campaign is underway right now and we are sincerely asking for your support. While their stories may not be a dramatic, there are many struggling families and individuals in Bethlehem that need the help provided by the YMCA. In 2016, more than 3,017 families benefitted from membership financial assistance at the Bethlehem YMCA. Of those, 535 children received assistance for school-age child care and 370 kids were able to attend YMCA summer camp because of financial assistance raised during our Annual Campaign. 803 active older adults were able to address their chronic health challenges by participating in special wellness programs funded by donations to the campaign. Ralph Waldo Emerson is often quoted as writing that, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Thanks to everyone that supports the Bethlehem YMCA and makes each life breathe easier.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Happy New Year Constant Readers, 2017…a New Year…a time of new beginnings, resolutions, dreams, wishes and reality. I hope that your Holiday Season was wonderful and that you are ringing in the New Year in good health & renewed energy. This year brings curiosity and anticipation as to what this New Year will bring to us with the transition at the White House. I have never heard so much political discussion in the bookshop, as I did this past year. 2016 was a year of change for just about everyone. I saw the sale of more “light-hearted, family oriented, comedy & inspiration” books than any other. Customers often mentioned that they needed something to “take them away” from the stress and focus of the election season! Well, Tattered Pages prides itself on having thousands of books that can take you away! The shelves are stocked with History, Mystery, Sci-Fi, Non-fiction, Humor, Romance, Urban Fantasy, Horror, Action-Suspense, Children’s books, Young Adult, Classic Literature, Sports, Diet, Fitness, Parenting, Self-Help, Religion, Westerns and Crafting just to name some of the sections of the inventory! If you haven’t been in… the books are arranged like a real book store! (I always am amused when people are amazed that there is an order in here!) All of the inventory has been logged into a data base and I can tell you, rather quickly, whether I have a book in stock! (We all know that a computer is only as good as the person who entered or removed the book from inventory! Seamus takes no responsibility either way!) 2016 brought me the blessings of two new babies into our ever expanding family! I now have a new nephew & a new niece both currently under 6 months old. My Darlin’ Dad is doing well at the Teresian House. He celebrated a one year anniversary of living there. At the recent Holiday party he won a yard long box of European cookies, which he is not sharing, so don’t ask! He also won a box of Hershey’s Pot O’Gold which he is sharing for he doesn’t do well with caramels! He will be 88 in January and he has been having more good days, though his Parkinson’s restricts his walking now. He loves being read to, and he often has a book selected for me to read from when I visit. My son, SFC Matthew Eldridge, 82nd Airborne Army, is still stateside, but is scheduled to be deployed with 1700 soldiers to Iraq in January. He has already been there 4 times! He did get to spend Christmas with his wife and children. One of their highlights was receiving a box from the Daughters of the American Revolution filled with gift bags to distribute to the children of soldiers about to be deployed. My son & the chaplain distributed them at Fort Bragg, NC. My grandchildren were thrilled with their surprises, as I am sure the other 50 children were! Thank you to local member, and Tattered Pages friend, Helen Murphy for this wonderful gift and for their thoughtfulness! Books were, of course, gifts to my grandchildren & other family members. My 4 year old granddaughter, Raven, took such delight in the Jan Brett Christmas themed books. “Nonna, whoever heard of a Christmas Moose?” Well, she decided, at the last minute of course, that she wanted red Russian Matryoshka dolls like in her book! She told my son that Nonna has a blue one, I don’t want blue, I want red like in my Santa book! My son called panicked and said that I did it again! Well, yes, I did! I found a set of wooden hand-painted Russian nesting dolls in red, pink and white on Amazon! When she opened it she squealed, “Just like in my Santa workshop book!” I said, “Of course, Nonna is friends with Mrs. Claus, I am part Ukrainian, she found these for me!” The other highlight of Christmas was when Raven & her big

sister, Trinity were discussing the Nutcracker. They had seen a video of the Nutcracker, which I guess Raven has watched several times. She was fascinated by Nutcrackers and the ballet. I took that opportunity to give each of them one of my vintage Nutcrackers to take home. Now I said vintage, not antique. Most were purchased at K-Mart or Walmart around 25 years ago. Raven bounced down the stairs with them and Ooooops… just like in the Nutcracker story, they both needed repair My husband eagerly took them down to his workshop where the girls watched Papa glue them back together. Once the glue dried, Raven appeared in the living room carefully carrying her green Nutcracker, named Nut, on a living room pillow, just like Clara in the Nutcracker! Her steps were gentle & precise like a ballerina. A memory that I will never forget, and perhaps neither will she. Amongst their books they received more books by Jan Brett: “The Trouble with Trolls” and “The Umbrella” which is set in a jungle rain forest where the animals all squeeze into an open umbrella, very similar to the Scandinavian hat or mitten story. There were other books about Trolls, Frozen, a Wind in the Willows Pop-up books, Dork Diaries & Stories of Elsewhere for Trinity. Since my son is a new home owner (of a house built in 1870 that sits on a river in NH) we made a new home owner’s survival kit filled with those things you forget you might need as a homeowner, such as an extension cord, electrical tape, duct tape, WD-40, 100 tea lights, flashlights & lanterns, clamp utility lantern, extra work gloves, a ton of pantry foods and a Giada “Italians Essentials” cookbook, Reader’s Digest “Homeowners How to Fix Anything” book & a Pampered Chef’s cookbook with cooking stone. I have a 22 month old curly headed redhead great niece who I gave two “Freckleface Strawberry” picture books which are written by actress Juliane Moore. Each year I try to find a unique Civil War book for my husband. This year it was “How to Lose the Civil War” by Bill Fawcett, on the disastrous military mistakes & proposed campaigns of the Civil War. During the Holiday shopping season some of the most popular books that sold in the shop were : “Historic Tales of Bethlehem” by Susan Leath, our Town Historian. I sold out! More to come soon. Other big sellers were: “Unbroken” by Lauren Hillenbrand, “Nightengale” by Kristen Hannah, History books on World War II, Civil War and The Roosevelts, cookbooks, crafting books and of course children’s books! I thank each and every one of you who supported Tattered Pages, especially on Small Business Saturday in November, and every day!!! Without your support 2017 could be my last year here! So, PLEASE, tell a friend and remember that if I don’t have the book in stock, I will gladly search for and find you the best copy at the best price. Just a reminder: if you are going to bring in books for Trade Credit: only 6 clean/odorfree books at a time. Hardcover novels must have dustjackets. What I can’t use, you must take back. I do not buy books but give you credits that work like a coupon and discounts another 20% of the lowest price on the books at checkout! In closing, thank you for your support, and remember, nothing goes better on a windy, Winter night, than a hot beverage, a cuddly blanket and a good book! Hope to see you in the shop in 2017. Oh, by the way, all sales over $15 will automatically receive either a free book from my selection or an additional 15% off your sale! Seamus & I will be waiting…Happy New Year!

Bethlehem Central Middle School to Stage

“Once on This Island, Jr.”

A cast of 75 Bethlehem Central Middle School students has been busy rehearsing the musical “Once on This Island, Jr.,” a modified version of the exciting musical “Once on This Island,” which originally ran on Broadway in 1990-91 and a few years later in London’s West End, where it received the Olivier Award for Best Musical. Bethlehem Central High School music teacher and choir director, Jason Dashew, musically directs the show, and his wife, Lindsay Dashew, who brings her experience as an actor and a children's theater educator, directs the show. The Dashews are excited about working with the middle school students on this production, noting the dedication and skill the students have exhibited in rehearsals. The Dashews also expressed appreciation for the many parents who run production elements of the show, including costumes, sets, make up, ticket sales and production party preparation. “We are so grateful to our parents who have shared their time and expertise to help make this a wonderful production,” said Lindsay Dashew. The musical tells the story of an island population starkly divided by social class, but ultimately brought together by the powers of love and healing of an orphaned peasant girl, Ti Moune. The show incorporates elements that echo the timeless storylines of Romeo and Juliet and The Little Mermaid. In addition to the cast, sixty seven students will participate in the production as part of the running crew, and on committees such as makeup and hair and costumes, and as ushers.
