GYHM has members all around the world. Besides our main page we have two private Facebook groups: Guard Your Heart Ministries (ladies) and Guard Your Heart Ministries (gentleman). On the main page as well as the private pages we post daily devotionals, advice, quotes and scriptures to inspire others.

As of 2020, GYHM has a website, gyhm.org and has also launched a clothing store on teespring.com.

In 2020, the Lord begun to speak to our founder about launching a magazine, which has been a childhood dream of hers. The purpose of Guard Your Heart Magazine is to empower and inspire others to dream big and pursue their God given dreams. We hope that each story shared will inspire you to overcome the hurdles in your life and pursue what God has laid out in your heart to do.

THE HISTORY OF HAITI

On December 5, 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on a large island he claimed for the Spanish monarchy and called the island “La Isla Española” or Hispaniola.

Prior to Columbus arrival the Island was inhabited by a group of Amerindians or Native Americans (Indians) called the Taíno and Arawak. The original inhabitants of the land called it Ayiti, Bohio, and Kiskeya. These names are still used today to identify the Western part of the Island and gave rise to the name Haiti, from the word Ayiti. Ayiti, which means “land of many mountains”, or “land of mountains” is the main name that the later African inhabitants called the Island and it’s the name used by its current inhabitants who are descendants of the early Africans on the Island, who were taken from various regions in Africa as slaves and taken over to the Island to work. As the language spoken on the Island has evolved and due to foreign involvement in the country, Ayiti was adapted to Haiti, because the phonetic sounds made when saying Ayiti, sounded like Haiti. The Ay in Ayiti, when pronounced by natives of the country sounds like the sound “Ha” or “Hai” makes.

When Columbus arrived on the Island, he was warmly greeted by the Taíno and Arawak people. They gave him many gifts in the form of gold jewelry which led Columbus to believe that there was gold on the Island.

Later the Spanish monarchy betrayed the native people of the Island by forcing them to work in gold mines. The harsh labor conditions along with the diseases brought to the Island by the Spanish settlers caused much of the Amerindian population of the Island to die. By 1501, the Spanish monarchy begun to send African laborers of the Island to replace the Taíno and Arawak people. As their population begun to decrease some of the natives begun to marry and have children with the Africans. Their descendants gave rise to a group of people in Haiti known as the mulattos.

This group of people also included the children of Caucasian (mainly French) and Africans on the Island.

Later when Haiti got its independence it decided to use two colors (Blue and Red) in its flag to represent the main population at the time. The red presented the mulattos and the blue represented the black Africans.

In the early eras of colonization on Hispaniola, war broke out between the Spanish, French and Portuguese who wanted the Island for themselves because of the potential of gold on the Island and its geographic position between South America, Central America, North America, Africa and Europe. Haiti’s central location between these regions was very valuable at the time. The land was also very fertile and a haven for farmers, who wanted to establish large plantations for food, tobacco, cotton and sugar.

The French also gave another name to the western part of the island, “La Perle des Antilles”, or The Pearl of the Antilles. It was given this name because of the country’s richness in beauty and fertility for farming. The northern part of Haiti was very fertile and was used to grow tobacco, cacao, coffee, indigo and cotton. The French established the capital of the western part of the island in the northern city of Cap-Français. Cap is shortened for capital and Français means French. This northern city which was near the coast and geographically positioned towards Europe was very important for the French.

They nicked name it, Paris because of its beauty and value. During the seven-year war (1756–1763) the French and British, who were fighting for world supremacy, fought on the coast of Cap-Français on 21 October 1757. They all knew of the importance of that region and wanted power and control.

From August 22, 1791 until January 1, 1804, the slaves on the western part of the island fought for their freedom from the French who subject them to inhumane and harsh conditions. Cap-Français was very instrumental in the plight to freedom. The Haitian Revolution begun with a ceremony known as Bois Caïman or Bwa Kayiman in Haitian Creole in a region of Cap-Français known as . The translation of Bois Caïman is Alligator woods (forest). This ceremony took place of August 14, 1791 and was lead by Bookman or Boukman Dutty (Dutty Boukman). Boukman was born in what is now modern-day Senegal and Gambia. He was a slave in Jamaica and eventually ended up in Ayiti. He was also a vodou high priest and a maroon leader. The word maroon comes from the Spanish word "cimarron" or "cimarroon," which means wild. It was a word used to describe former slaves who selfliberated themselves from slavery by running away and forming their own groups. During the Bois Caïman ceremony, boukman lead several slaves who were in high-ranking positions from the nearby plantations in a ritual. This ritual was a symbolic pact between them that they would do everything necessary to fight for freedom and to free other slaves. These leaders also came up with a plan to gain the freedom they desired. The first part of the plan was to burn down the plantations and also spread rumors that would motivate other slaves to rise up and fight for freedom. On November 7, 1971, Boukman was captured and killed, but that did not stop the other slaves from moving forward with the rebellion against the French. Under the leadership of several leaders such as François-Dominique Toussaint, popularly known as Toussaint Louverture, the rebellion continued. Toussaint adopted the name Louverture, which means opening because he wanted to create a pathway to freedom.

Toussaint Louverture was never part of the Bois Caïman ceremony. But, was later convinced the enslaved people of Saint Dominique should have freedom from slavery and govern itself. He was also a devote Roman Catholic and opposed Vodou (Voodoo).

Much of his training (education) came from Jesuit missionaries. Toussaint also received training in the use of traditional medicine from his father. His father was also an educated man. His father was Gaou Guinon, a prince and later king of the the Allada and the Fon people. The Allada and the Fon people lived in what is now modern-day Benin, Togo and Nigeria. It is believed Gaou Guinon father, Soso who was king of the region died in 1724. When he died, he had two sons Hussar and Gaou Guinou. Hussar who was the youngest of the two sons wanted power and control and fought his older brother Gaou Guinou who had been declared king as the oldest. With the aid of his wife Aitta, Hussar took control of the region and exile his brother by selling him into slavery in 1724.

Toussaint rose to be a leader on the plantation he lived on and it was with permission from his master that he was allowed to be educated. During the Haitian revolution he helped his master and his family escape off the island to avoid persecution and possibly death.

Toussaint was a very smart man who spoke three languages: French, Creole, and Latin. Being able to speak these languages and being educated helped gave him an advantage and caused much success under his leadership. French was not a language that all of the slaves spoke. Many of them spoke Creole.

The word Creole means mixture and in modern-day time many islands of the Caribbean speak a variation of Creole that have some similarities but are also vastly differ. Also, the word Creole is often used to describe the language and people of the state of Louisiana (United States) who were once under the control of France and interacted with the slaves of Saint Dominique. Sometimes slaves were taken from Saint Dominique and sent to Louisiana and vice versa.

This is why modern-day Louisiana has a strong African influence that stems from the culture of Saint Dominique.

Since the slaves of Saint Dominique came from various regions of Africa, each having their own language based on the tribe they came from. They adapted to their new environment by creating a new language that was a mixture of their own dialects, French, Spanish and the languages spoken by the earlier inhabitants of the island, the Taíno and Arawak people.

Since France colonized the island longer than any other country, the French language heavily influenced the Creole now known as Haitian Creole. But, the languages do vastly differ and Haitian Creole should never be referred to as French. It should also be noted that different regions of modern-day Haiti speak Haitian Creole in different ways. The Creole spoken in Northern Haiti has some variations from the Creole that is spoken elsewhere in the country.

When the French realized their rule over Saint Dominique had been compromised. They begun to negotiate with Toussaint Louverture who had risen to be the top leader of the Africans and mulattos in Saint Dominique at the time. In 1794, the French National Convention granted citizenship rights and freedom to all blacks within its empire to secure the loyalty of the black population, suppress the revolution and prevent the British and Spanish from taking control of the country. But, that still meant that Saint Dominique would stay as a territory of France. In 1794, Toussaint joined forces with the French to fight against the Spanish who wanted to gain control of the western half of the island.

Toussaint and the French won, but, a betray was soon in route.

Through a series of political maneuvers and power grabs, Toussaint was able to get control of Saint Dominique. In 1801, He drafted a constitution for the newly freed country and declared himself the countries lifetime ruler as a Governor-General. In the constitution he freed all the slaves, regardless of their color. In the 1801 constitution he also mandated that every able body work for a living, outlaw divorce, and declared the Roman Catholic religion as the only religion that was allowed in the country.

But, Toussaint realized that he still needed the help of the French to help Saint Dominique economically and politically flourish. So, he sought for the approval of France as much as possible through various political moves. But, the French realizing the economic and geographic value of Saint Dominique, were not ready to give up full autonomy to the country. Thus, Napoleon Bonaparte, who was on a quest for world domination sent a large military force to capture Toussaint and restore slavery.

In July 1802 General Charles Leclerc, captured Toussaint and deported him to France and jailed him in Fort-de-Joux in the Jura mountains of France or the French Alps. He later died on April 7, 1803, from what is believed to have been malnutrition, pneumonia and tuberculosis.

On November 2, 1802, Charles Leclerc died from yellow fever. Before his death he wrote to Napoleon Bonaparte and recommended General Donatien Marie Joseph de Rochambeau succeed him.

Rochambeau was a former governor of SaintDomingue and Martinique and a military officer. In his letter to Napoleon Bonaparte, Leclerc listed out some characteristics that qualified Rochambeau for the job and one of those characteristics was that he hated the blacks. From 1802 until January 1804, Rochambeau brutally killed women, children and men in what is known as the Rochambeau Genocide.

The plan was to kill all the slaves who had risen up and important new slaves to the region that were more submissive. He not only carried out his tactics

in Haiti but other colonize regions in the Caribbean such as Cuba who were rising up against colonization.

The mulattos and African on Saint Dominique fought back under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

Dessalines who is believed to have been born on the African continent and brought over to Saint Dominique as a slave was a lieutenant under Toussaint Louverture. Dessalines was not educated as Toussaint and did not agree with the diplomatic and alliance Toussaint wanted to establish with the French.

revolted but were no match for the American army and many lost their lives trying to expel the Americas out of the country. Even after the United States left Haiti, they maintained control of the country by placing US back leaders and passed policies that crippled the Haitian economy.

On November 18, 1803, Dessalines pushed the French forces to a region of Northern Haiti and engage in the last major battle for freedom known as the Battle of Vertières. Vertières is still a flourishing region located in what is modern day Cap-Haïtien, formerly known as Cap-Français when the country was called Saint Dominique.

On January 1, 1804, Haiti was born. Dessalines changed the name of the country from Saint Dominique to Ayiti, in honor of the Taíno and Arawak people who had lived on the island prior to colonization. When Haiti gained its independence, it became the first black nation to abolish slavery. In 1804, Haitian soldiers under Jean-Jacques Dessalines orders, killed all the white population is Haiti whom they viewed as a threat. This became known as the 1804 Haiti massacre. Even though Dessalines was not an educated man he surrounded himself with those who were and placed them in leadership positions in Haiti. The majority of these leaders were mulattos and whose descendants still influence Haiti.

When news of the Haitian revolution broke out to other parts of the world that were colonized and enslaved, it motivated the slaves to seek independence. After the independence Dessalines sought to fortified Haiti’s economy by trading goods such as coffee and sugarcanes with the United States, but many of these countries who saw Haiti as a threat placed embargoes on the nation. The United States tried its best to suppress news of the newly independent country to prevent its own slaves from rising and did not recognize Haiti as a free nation until 1862. To avoid recolonization, France demanded Haiti to pay for its independence. Due to fear of being taken over, the Haitians obliged and began to cut down it’s trees to sell as repayment for independence. When the money generated from the cutting down of Haiti’s forest was not enough to pay the huge sum of money France demanded, the country began to borrow money from banks in France and the United States. It took Haiti over two-hundred years to pay for its independence and the last amount owed was made in 1934. From 1804 and onward other countries sought to cripple the country in various ways. From 1915 until 1934 the United States invaded the country and forced it to pay taxes and this caused the country to go into more debt. During the US occupation in Haiti, Haitians

It’s a shame that a country such as Ayiti that was once regarded as the most beautiful and most profitable has evolved to be what it is today. Some may say that Haiti is under a curse and made a pact with the devil to gain its independence but that’s not entirely true. Since Toussaint Louverture, Haiti has been a country dedicated to Jesus Christ and at the same time has had some bad leaders who choose voodoo and used it as a tool to maintain their regimes and oppress the people.

While there are those who have chosen to embrace the ways of voodoo, there is a majority who love Jesus Christ and who seek and worship Him in spirit and in truth and not because Christianity is a religion forced upon them but because they have tried and tasted of the Lord’s goodness and see that He is good and better

than voodoo. While there are some spiritual aspects to Haiti’s problems, much of the countries problems is also natural and the results of bad foreign policies that crippled it economy, poor leadership and several other complicated factors that would take too much time to discuss. But, one thing is for sure there is hope for Haiti and a brighter future lays ahead because it is God’s will for Haiti. A new nation filled with His glory and a testament of His might, power and love. Such is the future of Haiti.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR HAITI?

I saw a post a few months back of an individual asking for prayers for Haiti and to that someone else responded, “We do not need any more prayers. How long have we been praying?” Haitians who believe in Christ and choose to follow Him are relentless when it comes to prayer. Prayer is a lifestyle for them and part of who they are. They wake up early to pray and stay up late into the hours to pray. Usually on Fridays they have services devoted to praying pass midnight and throughout the week have days devoted to fasting and prayer. These fasting and prayer services often involve putting on sackcloth as laid out in the Bible, climbing a mountain, humbling themselves before God and crying out to God for help. On the lips of all these Haitians is always prayers for Haiti. For decades Haitians have been crying out to God for help for Haiti.

But, sometimes those prayers are not matched with actions as mentioned in James 2:17 due to fear. Fear of being kidnapped or killed. But, that’s not all of Haitians who are fearful because through those in the diaspora may never step foot back in Haiti, they support those who do and the Churches who do. Just about every Haitian Church (thousands) in the Diaspora around the world have some type of charity work they are doing in Haiti. For decades Haiti has been sustained by foreign aid and by foreign and local charities. Though these charities and private partnerships that will benefit the economy Haiti can be transformed for the better. Through it may seem right now like Haiti is not making progress and the death of the Haitian president Jovenel Moise, on July 2021 cause the country many setbacks. His death is not in vain because it opened the Haitian people’s eyes to a major issue that was stopping the advancement of the country for generations that Moise often spoke about.

The issue is the elite who for generations have benefited off Haiti being poor and made it impossible for Haiti to move forward because poverty in Haiti created big wealth for them. I remember not too long ago listening to a famous Haitian American Pastor discuss this issue in a sermon. In the sermon this pastor talked about a meeting he had with a former prime minister of Haiti. The former prime minister talked about how the projects he started or wanted to start came with opposition from the elite. One such project was to create better roads. When some of the elites heard of this project, they came to him and told him not to do it or else there would be consequences.

When the prime minister asked this individual why he opposed the project, the individual said if you build this road, which would run through a rich community (where the elites reside) the black Haitians will feel entitled and think it’s okay to come where we live.

One of the biggest tools satan uses to fight humanity is color. Not only does he cause white and colored people to be at war with each other, he also causes colored people to be against each other and white people to be against each other. Thus, on every level possible he has found a way to cause brother to be against brother and sister against sister. Even in Haiti there are wars based on color.

There are two main groups that fight for power. The blacks who often refer to themselves as the true descendants of Dessalines and the elite or oligarchs who are either descendants of the mulattoes of the land or those whose ancestors came to Haiti from the middle east. For decades satan has used color as a tool to oppress the Haitian people along with bad foreign policies that affected the nation. For Haiti to have a better future it’s important to address these too things.

The Haitian motto is “L'union fait la force” or Unity is strength. This emblem is also on the Haitian flag.

There is no doubt that God is moving in Haiti regardless of how bad things may look. His desire is to birth a new Haiti and through the unity of those in Haiti and in the Haitian Diaspora a new Haiti is on the horizon.

6. Set up a budget for yourself.

8. Invest your money.

9. Become more financially literate.

10. Pay off debt using the snowball method.

11. Be wise about borrowing your money to others.

12. Pay your tithes and offering.

13. Start an emergency fund and keep at least $1,000 in it.

HAITIAN BEEF PATTIE Ingredients 1Filling 1 lb of ground beef 1 medium onion, diced 3 garlic clove, minced 1 medium shallot, diced 1 tsp. lime juice 1 tsp. seasoning salt 1/2 scotch bonnet pepper, chopped 1/4 tsp. thyme 1/4 tsp. rosemary 1 tbsp. tomato paste 2 tsp. olive oil Dough 2 cups of all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1 cup water 1 cup lard (Manteca) or substitute with 1 cup of shortening and butter mixed together

HAITIAN BEEF PATTIE Directions STEP 1: Combine salt water and flour in a large bowl. Mix well using your hands. Generously dust surface area.

Knead until dough is firm and slightly sticky. Roll the pastry into a ball. Pack it up in a plastic wrap. Set aside for 15 minutes.

STEP 2: Over medium heat, heat oil in a skillet or saucepan.

Add onions, garlic, shallot, peppers and seasoning mixture. Stir-fry for 1 minute until softened. Add the meat and simmer with water until meat is tender and water is absorbed. Add tomato paste and stir well until medium brown.

STEP 3: On a clean surface area, dust with flour generously to prevent dough from sticking. Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough and stretch in a rectangular circle. Roll dough front to back and back to front until 1/8 inch thick. Spread the lard or shortening mix generously.

HAITIAN BEEF PATTIE Directions STEP 4: Fold in the flaps to cover over coated areas. Sprinkle the dough with flour and roll out evenly. Form into a ball and set aside for 15 minutes.

STEP 5: Repeat the steps to flatten and fold the dough. Wrap the dough ball in plastic and let refrigerate overnight.

STEP 6: Preheat oven at 375° and prepare to bring out the dough. Unwrap dough and roll out evenly. Divide into disc like shapes. Roll disc dough, as thin as possible.

Place disc dough in the palm of your hands and extend pieces with fingers. Add filling. Fold dough and seal edges. Bake until golden brown. Serve warm.
