MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH SFA:

With more than 10,415 students surveyed, find out who they have determined as Singapore’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers this year, as well as the most recent employment trends in the market!

How Were These Rankings Compiled?

Learn more about the methodology behind Singapore’s most comprehensive and extensive survey of student opinions on graduate job applications, career expectations and today’s most popular employers.

For over a decade, the Singapore’s 100 team has surveyed fresh graduates and students at institutions of higher learning to find out which companies, firms and organisations piqued their interest as they enter the working world.

Our Singapore Graduate Barometer survey is promoted on the official gradsingapore website (Singapore's 100), university career centres, social media and through word-of-mouth among students. Each year, students from all universities across the nation complete the survey under anonymity, and it remains the key to honest insights regarding their career goals and job-seeking habits.

Students first receive the survey either via hyperlink or a physical copy at career surveys. Unlike typical employer brand surveys, however, they are first asked about the sectors they are interested in. Afterwards, the students are requested to disclose which particular organisations or firms they prefer.

Tips for the guide

• Keen on a specific sector? Head to page 19 for more information.

• Curious on what employers look for in potential hires? Turn to page 57 and find out what makes these highflying graduates stand out!

• Look up key information and job opportunities on Singapore’s Leading Graduate Employers from page 67 onwards

With its quick completion rate (about 15 minutes), the survey boasts high numbers of responses and accuracy rates. It offers valuable and meaningful insights into student preferences, ethics and values when it comes to jobhunting.

This system reflects the process most students undergo when making career choices regarding who they would like to work with. The survey not only compiles a list of Singapore's top 100 employers; it also provides a glimpse on how these companies rank among themselves within their own sectors. Field research took place from June 2024 to April 2025.

In addition, the survey also provides insights on the differences between first-year students and those in their penultimate or final years regarding their job preferences. Dissimilarities between student learning and job interest can also be picked out. For example, more students in natural sciences are interested in joining the public sector this year compared to 2024.

However, gathering such a large amount of data can be daunting, so why go through all this every year? For us, we hope that employers will utilise these results as a foundation to not only better understand student mindsets, but to improve on how they can engage with them as they enter the workforce.

As for the students reading this, we hope these results can help you better weigh your options between your choice of employers. We also hope that you will become more self-aware as

you begin your journey towards the working world, as well as the challenges that await you with prospective employers. Now, it is time to turn the page and jump right in!

Accounting and Financial Management

From tax planning to daily financial management, graduate accountants enjoy a wide range of roles across industries and employers.

Top rated employers

Playing a critical role in a company’s strategic development, accountants are essential to businesses, regardless of industry. They ensure businesses’ compliance with relevant regulations and statutes by assessing their finances.

The range of jobs in this field is diverse. These include management accounting, which transforms raw financial data into actionable business analysis, and specialisations, including tax and forensic accounting. Depending on the job and employer, some accountants may work onsite with clients instead of being deskbound for extended periods.

While the accounting industry in Singapore has been undergoing rapid development, such as adopting cloud-based solutions and artificial intelligence (AI), it has also been experiencing a talent shortage in recent years. In response, several recommendations, including increasing starting salaries and expanding entry pathways into accounting, have been implemented with significant success. For example, enrolment in the Singapore Chartered Accountant Qualification has more than doubled in 2024.

Opportunities for graduates

Graduate accountants may work with the Big Four accounting firms, boutique consultancies, or in the public sector. With recent initiatives launched by the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants, accountant careers are now more accessible to interested candidates who lack relevant degrees, such as through the Accelerated Pathway Programme.

Alternatively, most graduates complete their professional qualifications while working as junior accountants or in specialised training programmes. They may undergo rotations across job functions, offering deeper insights into the industry’s diverse opportunities.

Aspiring accountants should have strong skills in analytics, organisation and communication. In addition, they should be wellinformed about the latest developments in the sector.

Aviation, Transport and Supply Chain

Join a fast-paced industry where change is constant, and embrace fresh challenges as the sector evolves to become more agile and efficient.

Top rated employers

Supply chains refer to the fast, safe and effective handling of goods, materials and services. Meanwhile, transport planning and management oversee the planning and facilitation of moving both people and cargo across land, air and sea.

Organisations involved in supply chains include logistics and distribution enterprises, transport companies and courier services. For transport planning, major employers typically include local authorities, specialist consultancies, civil engineering firms and transport providers.

The logistics sector as a whole has benefited from the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as via the adoption of smart machinery, big data and AI. As a result of these developments, supply chains have now become more organised, transparent and efficient.

However, the industry is also currently facing setbacks, with looming disruptions such as the trade tensions between China and the United States and geopolitical unrest in the Middle East. Such issues are likely to continue affecting the global supply chain for the foreseeable future.

Opportunities for graduates

There are many positions and sub-sectors to choose from here, including roles in sourcing and operations, as well as support roles in finance and marketing. Moreover, the advancement and widespread adoption of technology have resulted in the creation of new jobs in data management and software management.

Graduates are inducted into companies via training programmes, which provide them with a general overview of the sector before they choose their area of specialisation. Candidates should possess logical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills. In addition, stress management, negotiation skills and patience will prove useful during hectic periods.

Despite macro disruptions in the industry, so long as global markets look to diversify their suppliers to increase their supply chains, the number and variety of job opportunities will likely remain high.

Banking and Financial Services

Serving as a key part of the world’s economy, graduates in this sector play a crucial role in a variety of money matters.

Operating as the core of the financial sector, bankers are responsible for handling cash, credit and other financial transactions. Employers include retail and insurance companies, as well as digital banks, which operate entirely online.

There is a wide range of positions to choose from: portfolio managers help oversee investments for clients by maximising returns via strategic buying and selling, while risk managers look to mitigate market risk through analysing data with predictive mathematical models. Alternatively, graduates can also pursue roles in actuarial consultancies and relevant compliance firms, which are overseen by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

Amid evolving cyber and technological risks, four key strategies have been outlined for financial institutions to strengthen their cyber and operational resilience. These include viewing disruptions from customers’ perspectives, mitigating third-party and open-source software risks in their IT supply chains, preparing for a “post-quantum” security environment, and developing multi-layered approaches to detect and counter cyber threats.

Opportunities for graduates

Those interested in this sector will need more than just a finance or business degree if they want to succeed here. Soft skills, such as leadership, being able to work under pressure and strong communication skills are vital here.

Moreover, competition for limited space in both graduate trainee programmes and entry-level positions can be fierce. As such, apart from submitting their applications early, candidates should consider pursuing relevant internships and work experience to enhance their competitiveness.

Graduate hires typically start as analysts, with trainee programmes offering departmental rotations for a more holistic understanding of the company. They may also shadow senior managers during client meetings, allowing them to pick up communication skills.

After a few years, they will progress to junior or associate roles, assuming responsibility for managing both clients and stakeholders. Those who are client-focused, analytical and good with numbers will find themselves as highly valued assets to the company.

Consulting

In the wake of uncertain business outlooks and uneven economic recovery, it is up to graduate consultants to assist enterprises with their goals and needs.

Expert consultants are often sought after by a variety of clients to solve specific business challenges by providing unbiased insight and recommendations. This can include improving the company’s profit-making capacity, effectiveness, market position and brand value.

While some consultants may specialise in certain areas, such as HR and information technology (IT), others operate as generalists and provide general advice. Common responsibilities include conducting research, attending meetings, as well as developing and implementing recommendations.

While considered a lucrative job with opportunities for global travel, this line of work is also highly competitive due to its high popularity. In addition, the constant and rapid shifts in trends and industry change all but guarantee that there will never be a dull moment working as a consultant.

Opportunities for graduates

Consulting has a reputation for long hours, and can be a demanding career; most management consultants can work between 50 and 80 hours per week.

Established firms typically recruit via graduate trainee programmes, though placements and internships are occasionally extended to students in their penultimate year. This allows them to get acquainted with the industry ahead of the normal recruitment cycle, while also impressing potential employers along the way.

A passion for lifelong learning, strong business acumen and communication skills will be necessary for those looking to excel here. In addition, graduates must be able to adapt to changing business demands, highlighting the importance of staying updated and informed about their chosen specialisation.

Energy, Oil and Gas, and Utilities

With the existential threat of climate change looming, this industry has taken the opportunity to explore new and sustainable long-term strategies while remaining profitable.

This sector involves the exploration, development and management of natural resources. In addition, it also includes harnessing alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind and nuclear power.

While Singapore lacks natural resources on its own, it is home to the world’s largest bunkering port, as well as companies with major refining and petrochemical operations. However, as opinions shift against the use of fossil fuels, Singapore now also aims to become a global clean energy hub. With the target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, more companies are developing technology to tap into regional power grids, low-carbon alternatives and natural gas.

Given its equatorial location, solar remains Singapore’s most viable short-term energy resource. By 2030, the nation intends to deploy at least two gigawatt-peak of solar panels, which have been strategically deployed in areas such as rooftops and sheltered walkways.

Opportunities for graduates

While this sector offers a diverse range of roles and positions, it also requires a variety of academic credentials. While commercial roles may not require specific degrees, technical ones call for qualifications in areas such as engineering or mathematics.

Disruptions do occur in this sector on occasion, but it does not change the fact that power is a necessity for both households and industries alike. In addition, Singapore’s strategic location also attracts organisations to establish regional bases, offering new opportunities in exploration and production roles.

Engineering, Design and Manufacturing

From aerospace to built environments, the best engineers combine high technical knowledge with efficient teamwork and client management skills.

Engineers play a critical role in shaping a variety of industries, from developing medical equipment to components for aerospace research and development. For those who find satisfaction in bringing their designs to life, as well as have an affinity for technical work, this sector may be a good fit.

However, tight deadlines and demanding workloads can be a common occurrence with little room for leeway. As engineers are expected to work on multiple projects at once, employers here highly value individuals with strong time and project management skills.

Despite ongoing uncertainties in the market, a report from the Singapore Economic Development Board found that business sentiments in the manufacturing sector remain relatively positive this year. In particular, about 16 per cent of manufacturing firms anticipated better business prospects between January and June 2025 as compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

Additionally, data from the Singapore Manufacturing Federation also indicated an increase in focus towards sustainability, with 91 per cent identifying it as ‘essential’ for global competitiveness.

Opportunities for graduates

Historically, electronics and chemicals have been Singapore’s largest manufacturing clusters, employing a high number of engineers. While some employers offer graduate schemes to students, others may provide specialist programmes, which focus on applying technical know-how to general roles like marketing and management.

In addition, while smaller firms hire for specific, entry-level roles, larger ones do so through competitive training courses. To gain an advantage, applicants should pursue relevant work experiences, like internships or part-time jobs.

Apart from technical proficiency, soft skills like problem-solving, teamwork and project management are good to have. Having commercial awareness would also be a major plus for employers.

Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)

With ever-changing consumer habits and expectations, this industry makes for an exciting and engaging one.

Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) refer to products with a short shelf life that are sold quickly at relatively low costs, with common examples including food, toiletries and cosmetics. Due to the high demand for these goods, the FMCG industry revolves around rapid inventory turnover, product development and understanding consumer behaviour. Interested graduates will find themselves spoilt for choice in terms of employers, from local brands to multinational corporations (MNCs).

In 2025, the United States imposed a baseline of 10 per cent tariff on all imports, with higher rates for certain countries. While this rate has only impacted about 55 per cent of Singapore’s domestic exports, consumer goods will likely still face the brunt of these tariffs, which have influenced production costs and business strategies for affected companies. Moreover, consumer preferences have become increasingly divergent, leading to them becoming more conscious of their spending as a result. As such, the FMCG sector is likely continue to face substantial challenges to both maintain and grow their customer base.

Opportunities for graduates

The FMCG sector has many jobs open to interested candidates, from research and development (R&D) to HR. Larger firms often have training programmes that allow graduates to rotate through a range of roles before choosing their specialisation. Some may also offer general schemes to assess a candidate’s competencies across multiple sectors to determine the best roles for them.

Recruiters will expect applicants to be familiar with the company’s brand and competitors, and will value those with an interest in corporate social responsibility. With the increase of AI usage in the sector, such as for parsing customer data and predicting market trends, graduates who are skilled in such technologies will be highly valued as well.

Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals

Playing a pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s health, careers in this sector are both fulfilling and rewarding.

Singapore is known for its world-class healthcare system, ensuring that all citizens can access quality and affordable healthcare, with five of its academic medical centres ranking among the top 100 in Brand Finance’s Global Top 250 Hospitals 2025 Rankings. With a current focus on dealing with an ageing population, Singapore continues to strive towards providing quality and accessible healthcare for all.

In 2025, Singapore’s government has set aside S$20.9bn this year for healthcare, second only to defence at S$23.4bn. While most of this budget will go towards more facilities and manpower costs, a substantial amount will also be used for subsidies to keep costs low for patients.

In addition, as part of efforts to attract and retain staff, salary increments have been awarded to about 37,000 public healthcare workers by the government, while continuing to review manpower development initiatives to strengthen the healthcare workforce.

Opportunities for graduates

Despite the variety of roles in the sector, most do require specific qualifications. These can include an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, accreditations by the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) and registration with the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). In addition, completing a residency — lasting five or six years in one of three sponsoring institutions — is required. Aspiring specialists will also need to enrol in Advanced Specialist Training (AST) programmes, where they undergo training for an additional six years.

Alternatively, those without the relevant qualifications can explore non-clinical roles upon the completion and certification of relevant courses, such as supportive care and patient services. Other positions, like caregiving, will require additional training and qualifications. As for aspiring pharmacists, they must register with the Singapore Pharmacy Council (SPC), which includes pre-registration training and passing a competency exam. Those pursuing pharmaceutical research may also require postgraduate qualifications.

To excel in this field, candidates will need a passion for healthcare, empathy, strong communication skills, and resilience. Patience is also crucial for interacting with patients and their families, while effective time and stress management will ensure productivity.

Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism

Graduates joining this sector will find their expertise leveraged across a variety of areas, including health, food, and entertainment.

Opportunities in this sector can stem from a variety of areas, from hotel management to other avenues like events, heritage tours and entertainment, allowing applicants to tailor their job search based on their interests. However, do keep in mind that shift work is very common in this line of work, which can also extend into evenings, weekends and especially holiday periods.

Accounting for about four per cent of the nation’s annual gross domestic product, tourism in Singapore has been experiencing a strong comeback, with an all-time high of S$29.8bn in tourism receipts recorded in 2024. As part of efforts to further bolster tourism in Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board launched a roadmap for the industry through 2040, which revolves around three pillars: cultivating future demand, enhancing Singapore’s appeal as a destination and developing a future-ready tourism sector.

Opportunities for graduates

Recruitment within this sector is done year-round, with larger employers (such as those in hotel management) offering competitive graduate schemes. Candidates with retail or service-related experience, as well as those with established professional networks, will find themselves at an advantage here.

New hires are typically rotated through various departments within the company to gain hands-on experience and exposure to different roles. By doing so, they can make a more informed decision on which career path they would like to pursue.

While most job roles do not mandate specific degrees, some will still require specific certifications, such as those in culinary or facility management. Still, post-graduate qualifications in tourism or hospitality management are welcomed by recruiters.

For non-managerial roles, candidates may face competition from non-degree holders, so having relevant work experience would be advantageous. Soft skills, such as strong interpersonal skills, adaptability and resourcefulness, will also be advantageous here.

Insurance and Risk Management

This industry’s top priority is to safeguard clients and their assets against a wide range of risks.

The insurance industry serves to protect financial assets and individuals against unforeseen circumstances, such as accidents or sudden death. While larger firms tend to lead the sector on a global front, there are still smaller and newer companies in Singapore worth considering as employers.

At present, Singapore’s general insurance industry is projected to grow at an annual rate of 6.4 per cent this year, according to GlobalData, due to regulatory developments, economic expansions, as well as an increasing demand for private health insurance. In particular, the life insurance industry is also expecting continued growth from 2024, despite challenges such as inflation and geopolitical tensions in recent years. Notably, with the rise of cybercrime cases, there is also now a growing demand for underwriters to help companies protect themselves against such risks.

Opportunities for graduates

This sector offers a wide spectrum of careers, including corporate writing, personal insurance and reinsurance. Regardless, the objective remains the same: to protect the client’s financial assets.

Currently, the hiring landscape is rather competitive, with companies all vying for talent who are not just tech-savvy, but also experienced in risk and compliance. In addition, candidates who have strong interpersonal and communication skills are also highly valued, given the client-facing nature of the role.

For those looking into a career in risk management, certifications from external bodies may be required, with further accreditation often being a requirement for career advancement as well.

Investment Banking and Investment Management

A demanding yet rewarding field, graduates in this sector are entrusted with making sound financial decisions on behalf of their clients.

Due to its reputation for promising career progressions and competitive salaries, there is no shortage of graduates looking to join this sector. However, it is also demanding and unpredictable; long hours and high-pressure situations will be common occurrences throughout one’s career.

Work environments can be dynamic, with motivated employees able to assume responsibility early in their careers. However, career paths and progression can be volatile due to external factors, such as the current economic climate, geopolitical conflict and other market developments.

For example, several of Singapore’s largest banks have shifted focus on their regional franchises, while also taking advantage of potential opportunities from the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, which was established in January this year. However, with the implementation of the United States’ tariffs, the sector is also likely to experience more market volatility amid increasing trade uncertainties.

Opportunities for graduates

Successful candidates typically start as investment analysts, who will study the company’s (as well as the industry’s) current performance. In some firms, graduate training programmes are offered, allowing new hires to explore different roles across departments, such as management and legal controls.

Some banks are also open to internships as part of their recruitment process, which are popular options for those seeking industry experience. Alternatively, stockbroking firms can be considered as well; apart from buying and selling shares, they will offer financial advice to investors.

There are also opportunities in insurance firms and investment fund trade houses as analysts, junior associates or junior traders. Roles in investment can also be found in other sectors, such as property development and the public sector.

While a finance degree is not compulsory, a background in business, economics, mathematics or statistics will still be preferred among recruiters. In addition, some roles may require candidates to have a few years of work experience, though fresh candidates may still be considered in some cases. Successful applicants can anticipate some of the highest starting salaries in the field, but will need to stay ambitious to climb the ranks.

IT and Technology

As the tech industry continues to advance and evolve, graduates, too, must keep up with the changing trends and remain informed about up-and-coming digital tools if they want to flourish here.

Despite the challenges of 2024, including global economic uncertainty and significant restructuring across the sector, Singapore continues to strengthen its position as Southeast Asia’s leading technology hub. With an increased focus towards adopting AI in multiple sectors, there is expected to be a high demand for specialised professionals proficient in AI.

Notably, more than 26 AI Centres of Excellence have been established in Singapore to accelerate AI innovation and adoption across industries. In 2024 alone, the number of AI practitioners grew by about 25 per cent, reflecting significant progress towards the nation’s aim to triple its AI workforce within five years.

However, concerns about the IT sector’s environmental impact have also led to the launch of a S$30m research initiative to find more energyefficient methods of utilising digital technology and to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint as a whole.

Opportunities for graduates

Graduates will find a range of opportunities across this industry, from technical roles like IT support and programming to more general roles like development and internal operations. Alternatively, they may seek employment in fields like banking, manufacturing or even the public sector.

Additionally, entry roles can be found in smaller companies and startups that can potentially scale up to global enterprises under the right circumstances. To improve their operational performance, candidates who are able to handle big data will be preferred.

While science-based degrees are not mandatory, graduates from non-IT backgrounds may need to bridge the knowledge gap to make up for it. An IT degree alone does not guarantee employment in this field; soft skills like commercial awareness will still be needed to succeed.

Media and Advertising

Commercial awareness, communication abilities and social media competency are essential if graduates want to thrive in this field.

From print and broadcast to social media, this industry is not just dynamic, but spans a wide variety of platforms. Together, they play a vital role across various industries by supporting business growth and expansion.

Likewise, there are many career opportunities for graduates to choose from, such as copywriting, brand management and marketing research. While some jobs will involve direct engagement with stakeholders and public audiences, others focus more on providing support. In addition, professionals can opt to operate as generalists or choose to specialise in specific fields.

Much has changed in the media industry in recent years, evolving and driven primarily by digital transformation, shifting consumer preferences and technological advancements. For example, brands and businesses are shifting towards optimising their digital presence for mobile users, while also turning to short-form video content to better connect with their target audiences.

Opportunities for graduates

Jobs here are typically open to all disciplines, though some may demand specific skill sets or qualifications, such as video editing or graphic design for roles in advertising and marketing.

This is a sector where having relevant work experience matters; being well-connected and having a portfolio showcasing your best works will help enhance your candidacy. In addition, with the prevalence of social media and digital marketing, multimedia and online skills have become essential skills to acquire.

Creativity and innovation are highly valued in this industry, but they are far from the only important skills. On the contrary, because the market is constantly changing, research and insight generation skills are essential for employers to stay relevant.

Other valued soft skills include commercial awareness, communication skills and business acumen, particularly when working with in-house agencies or pitching campaigns to clients.

Property and Real Estate

As this sector follows a cyclical trend, graduates will need to keep a close eye on when the property market heats up or cools down.

Revolving around land development and sales, this industry enjoys a healthy demand for graduates due to its variety of job roles, whether with developers or investors.

Firms typically operate in either one or a combination of markets: commercial, residential or rural. However, as the sector is closely linked with both the construction and financial fields, activity can fluctuate accordingly.

While property prices are expected to continue rising this year, they are likely to grow at a slower pace. However, several external factors are expected to impact the market in the near term, including global economic concerns following US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, as well as the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Master Plan for 2025. Still, despite the volatility of 2025 for Singapore’s property market, existing policies and frameworks have been able to brace the market against interest rate fluctuations

Opportunities for graduates

This industry includes a large variety of roles that include the purchase, management and sale of properties, some of which have potential for high earning opportunities. However, some jobs will require professional certifications, such as those from the Real Estate Agency or by completing a Real Estate Salesperson course.

Taking up internships, especially with estate agents in the public sector, is a useful way to gain valuable work experience. In return, recruiters can offer top interns full-time employment at a later date. Alternatively, opting to work at a smaller firm typically means getting more opportunities to gain on-field experience, such as handling ongoing property deals.

For those looking to climb the corporate ladder, soft skills like commercial awareness, communication and analytical skills are vital. Moreover, the volatility of the property market means that it is necessary to stay informed about the current trends in the market, both domestically and internationally.

Public Sector

For those looking to make a positive impact on the lives of their fellow citizens, the public sector is the ideal platform for those looking to make a difference.

For those passionate about helping others and the nation, the public sector is an ideal place to start. As Singapore’s largest employer with approximately 150,000 officers under its employ, it boasts diverse opportunities across 16 ministries and over 50 statutory boards.

While some can opt for frontline roles, such as in education, healthcare and social services, there are also behind-the-scenes positions available, like policy drafting. Administrative and executive roles also make up a large chunk of the public sector, which involves assisting in rolling out initiatives that shape the lives of Singapore’s citizens.

As the use of digital services in the public sector increases, Singapore continues to drive digitalisation within the government to offer better and more efficient services to both citizens and businesses. With the launch of Smart Nation 2.0 in 2024, it aims to achieve three key goals: Trust, Growth and Community, to improve the lives of Singaporeans through technology. Efforts towards these goals include the introduction of the Digital Infrastructure Act in 2025 to improve the resilience and security of digital infrastructure and services, as well as the launch of several initiatives to boost broad-based adoption of AI in the country.

Opportunities for graduates

Unlike in the private sector, jobs in the public sector tend to be more resistant to pay cuts and layoffs, making it an appealing choice for those worried about job stability and security. Starting roles can vary depending on personal interests, ranging from educators to foreign service officers. From there, graduates can be recruited from specialist fields to general positions in the civil service or via graduate schemes.

While employers are open to graduates from diverse backgrounds, do note that there is a higher emphasis on paper qualifications as compared to the private sector, with some applications requiring academic transcripts during the hiring process. Soft skills such as strong interpersonal skills, adaptability and a drive to make a positive impact on others are also highly valued here.

Scientific Research and Development

In addition to having specific technical expertise, interested candidates must be detail-oriented and passionate about solving real-world problems.

Top rated employers

Deemed as the heart of innovation, the efforts of research and development (R&D) are considered instrumental in overcoming the constraints of Singapore’s size and limited resources. Graduates can expect to put their academic and creative capabilities to the test, working with top companies and researchers to develop solutions for not just national, but global benefit.

With a consistent investment of about one per cent of Singapore’s GDP, the nation’s R&D sector has continued to be one of its key pillars for economic development. Building on the progress achieved in its past iterations, 2025’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) Plan intends to focus on three areas: to expand its mission to tackle a broader range of national needs, enriching Singapore’s scientific base and upscaling platforms to drive technology translation to strengthen the nation’s capability for innovation.

In addition, according to Budget 2025, about S$1bn will be invested to upgrade biotech and medtech infrastructure in Singapore, as well as to build a new semiconductor R&D facility to maintain the nation’s capabilities in biotechnology and semiconductor research.

Opportunities for graduates

Due to the specialised nature of this sector, applicants must be equipped with the necessary qualifications, skills and work experience. Scientific roles in R&D are available across a range of industries, including but not limited to pharmaceuticals, sports science and the public sector.

Apart from lab work, researchers may also engage in field work and administrative tasks. Additionally, occasional shift work, overtime, or weekend hours may be required on the job, especially for projects requiring international collaboration.

While a doctorate is not compulsory, post-graduate qualifications will be needed to apply for research-based jobs. As these roles tend to be data-intensive and outcome-focused, candidates will need to demonstrate strong technical, analytical, research and organisational skills, along with a keen eye for detail.

LEE JUN ER

Manager, Project Development & Design, CapitaLand Development

2021: Graduated with degree in Civil Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS)

2021: Joined CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme, part of the project team for Sengkang Grand Residences and Sengkang Grand Mall

2023: Completed CapitaLand’s Graduate Development Programme

2024: Project manager for LyndenWoods

“What keeps me grounded is remembering why I chose this industry: to build spaces that matter.”

How did you get into your current line of work?

Since childhood, I was fascinated by the built environment: I was curious about how structures were built and why some places felt more inviting than others. Now, I help create spaces for people to live, work, and play.

What attracted me to CapitaLand Development (CLD) is its reputation for innovation and holistic approach to project management that goes beyond the technical aspects of engineering. CLD does not just build structures— it builds places with purpose, creating environments that connects people and enhance their lives. I enjoy the multi-disciplinary nature of project management; working with stakeholders to deliver a shared vision is both exciting and rewarding.

The industry then and now I joined CLD during the pandemic, a pivotal point for the real estate industry. Stakeholders had to reevaluate what spaces truly meant to people, with flexibility and human connection becoming key priorities in design and planning. We also had to adapt to using virtual meetings and digital collaboration tools, all while still ensuring strong alignment within the team and keeping stakeholders confident in our progress.

The real estate industry continues to evolve in meaningful ways, and I believe its future is about creating places that are smart, sustainable, and people-centric. Project developments now require a deeper understanding of community needs, environmental responsibility and technology integration. It is getting more complex, but also more fulfilling. What keeps me grounded is remembering why I chose this industry: to build spaces that matter.

What I enjoy most about my job

I love seeing an idea on paper transform into a real, tangible space people can use and enjoy. Project management in real estate is rarely straightforward; each development

has its own challenges, from tight deadlines to unexpected site issues. But knowing that our work has genuine impact is what makes it rewarding too. I am building better homes for families, creating malls to support businesses, and ultimately developing a space that brings communities together. The end result is always more than just a structure, it is a purposeful place designed to enhance how people live, work, and connect.

How was your path to leadership?

My path was shaped through hands-on experiences, embracing challenges, staying open to feedback, and learning from both success and failure. Leadership is not just about making decisions, it is about taking ownership, building trust, and empowering the team to succeed. I have been fortunate to have mentors and colleagues who offered guidance, believed in me, and helped me to grow professionally and personally.

Essential skills

I focused on gaining practical experiences—spending time on-site, shadowing seasoned colleagues, and actively engaging in day-today issues. This taught me to think quickly and build trust within teams. Treat each challenge as a stepping stone instead of a stumbling block, and most importantly, stay adaptable in an ever-changing environment.

My advice to graduates

Be curious, stay humble, and do not be afraid to get your hands dirty. Real estate development is a fastpaced, people-oriented industry. The most valuable learning happens on-site, observing how projects come together. Do not rush the process, focus on building up a strong foundation of technical knowledge and soft skills.

CHUA CHING HOCK

General Manager, Seletar Airport, Changi Airport Group (CAG)

2008: Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from National University of Singapore and joined the Terminal 3 Team

2012: Led and completed the Upgrading of Terminal 1

2017: Successfully opened Terminal 4 after leading the design of departure flow and implementation of passenger processing systems

2020: Implemented the world’s first contactless check-in solution as the Head of Departure Experience

2023: Appointed General Manager of Seletar Airport, overseeing Singapore’s air hub for Business and General Aviation flights

“Whenever we improve a service or launch a new product at Changi, I feel that I am also contributing to Singapore, which is very meaningful to me.”

How did you get into your current line of work?

I have always been fascinated with the world of aviation since university. I participated in the Talent Internship Programme by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore in 2007 and loved the experience so much! I was overjoyed when I was subsequently offered a permanent role (my first job) in 2008. I moved to Changi Airport Group (CAG) when it was corporatised in 2009 and am still here after 17 years!

The industry then and now

It was a very different world back in 2008. Smartphones and mobile apps had only just started becoming popular, and many processes in the industry were still manual.

Digitalisation and technological advancements over the years have automated various passenger processes, such as check-in and immigration. These have helped to better manage the passenger traffic at Changi Airport, which has almost doubled since 2008. Covid-19 also accelerated the adoption of technology, changing the way people experience air travel, such as more contactless processes and seamless airport journeys.

To stay relevant, I find it important to learn, un-learn, and re-learn! Keeping an open mind, being positive, and having a “cando” spirit also help me to develop resilience.

What I enjoy most about my job

I feel very proud to be working in the world’s best and most awarded airport! Changi Airport is a national icon of Singapore – one which our family members, relatives, and friends are also very fond of. Whenever we improve a service or launch a new product at Changi, I feel that I am also contributing to Singapore, which is very meaningful to me. Moreover, the aviation industry is very dynamic, with new and exciting developments happening all the time. The upcoming mega Terminal 5 is a good example!

Finally, I have many close friends in CAG, some of whom I have known for over 15 years.

How was your path to leadership?

I am very fortunate to have had job rotation opportunities every few years. which allowed me to develop a broader and more strategic enterprise mindset. I also got to take on larger roles and responsibilities, such as leading the FAST (Fast and Seamless Travel) programme and implementing the of Automated Check-in Kiosks and Bag-Drops across all four terminals. Driving the programme forward by collaborating and aligning with multiple stakeholders in a dynamic airport environment was important for my road to leadership. I am thankful to the mentors and leaders who coached me and gave me timely feedback. Daring to take on tough challenges and stepping out of one’s comfort zone are crucial.

Essential skills

Having a growth mindset and embracing both kindness and progress over perfection are essential. In addition, being able to work with partners and knowing how to seek alignment and connection with them is crucial, as the aviation industry has a huge ecosystem of stakeholders. To me, practice makes perfect.

My advice to graduates

It is important to proactively seek out mentorship and/or networking opportunities. There are many programmes and avenues available now, such as via LinkedIn platform. Fresh graduates should build their personal brand and industry network early so that they can better position themselves and communicate their value proposition to industry recruiters.

LEADING OTHERS TO SUCCESS

AW GUI YING EVELYN

Programme Director (Wireless Communications), DSO National Laboratories

“Resilience now means purposeful adaptation, turning complexity into opportunity and delivering capabilities that matter.”

How did you get into your current line of work?

I was seeking meaningful work, something challenging that offered growth and allowed me to contribute back to Singapore. Joining DSO was a leap into the unknown, driven by purpose. What started as a “try” has become a 15-year journey shaped by impact, transformation, and the constant drive to make a difference.

The industry then and now

When I began in defense R&D, our work was centered on building core technologies and delivering mature systems to SAF through long, methodical development cycles.

Today, the landscape demands speed, agility, and strategic foresight. With technology evolving rapidly, geopolitical shifts, and dual-use technology, we had to pivot towards agile development, rapid prototyping, and deeper collaboration with users and external partners.

I have grown with this shift, embracing new mindsets, leading through ambiguity, and guiding teams to innovate under pressure. Resilience now means purposeful adaptation, turning complexity into opportunity and delivering capabilities that matter.

What drives me is the conviction that the solutions we build strengthens Singapore’s defense. That sense of mission is what makes the challenge worth it.

What I enjoy most about my job

What I value most is the trust and autonomy I have been given to lead with conviction, charting new directions, shaping R&D priorities, and driving operational delivery from concept to deployment. That freedom to push boundaries makes each initiative both impactful and personal.

Equally fulfilling is the team spirit that fuels everything. I have worked alongside users, government agencies, industry partners and teams who consistently support and challenge me. Despite our diverse perspectives, we are united by a shared mission. The collaboration is

real, built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to solve complex challenges together.

The most fulfilling moments are when the capabilities we have built reach those who rely on them. That blend of human connection and technological ambition, driven by purpose, is what makes this journey so meaningful.

How was your path to leadership?

My journey into leadership was not linear, and it evolved through purposeful engagement, active listening, and translating strategy into outcomes. I learned to navigate complexity, guide cross-functional teams toward shared goals, and drive impact through clarity and empathy.

Working across agencies, users, and teams, I saw that influence stems not just from technical depth, but from understanding people, aligning intent, and building trust. I shaped direction by aligning stakeholders, managing competing priorities, and empowering others.

Every challenge became an opportunity, and through it all, I stayed anchored in what mattered most: delivering purpose-driven outcomes and creating space for others to grow.

Essential

skills

The skills I have found most essential are critical thinking, systems-level awareness, and humility to keep learning. You need to engage openly, ask the difficult questions, and never lose sight of the problem space you are solving for. Impact comes not just from deep expertise, but from the ability to connect it to context, mission, and people.

My advice to graduates

Be purposeful. AI/Machine Learning might be trending, but technology only matters when it is applied meaningfully. Focus on the problem, learn your domain, and do not shy away from messy realities. Engage, build, challenge, and grow.

EVOLVING AND LEARNING

AARON HENG

Tax Assistant Manager, BDO Singapore

2018: Graduated with a Master of Commercial Law (majoring in Taxation) from the University of Melbourne 2019: Admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria and joined BDO Singapore as a Tax Associate in the Corporate Tax team 2023: Promoted to Assistant Manager

2024: Voted Best Speaker at the BDO Emerging Leadership Programme 2025: Played a key role in pioneering BDO Singapore’s implementation of the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (“BEPS”) Pillar Two project, driving core technical and implementation efforts

“It is fulfilling to see the tangible impact of the tax work, especially when uncertainties are resolved or practical solutions are developed in areas such as restructuring, dispute resolution and compliance.”

Getting started

I have always been interested in a career that involves reading the law and crunching numbers. While pursuing my Master of Commercial Law at the University of Melbourne, I majored in international tax in my second semester, where it quickly became a clear area of interest as it was intellectually stimulating. A senior from the master’s programme recommended BDO Singapore, highlighting the tax team’s strong culture of learning and growth. I joined shortly after as a Tax Associate.

About my job

As a tax consultant, my work spans compliance, advisory, and, more recently, the implementation of BEPS Pillar Two. I enjoy diving into tax legislation, interpreting how the rules apply, and understanding the intersection between tax and financial reporting. This foundation allows me to support clients in crossborder tax planning, corporate restructuring, and dispute resolution, particularly through advisory work and engagements with the tax authorities.

What I enjoy most about my job

The problem-solving aspect fascinates me the most. Every engagement presents a new set of facts (with a wide range of different industries), and I have the opportunity to analyse the issues, apply the tax rules, and guide clients through complex situations. It is fulfilling to see the tangible impact of the tax work, especially when uncertainties are resolved or practical solutions are developed in areas such as restructuring, dispute resolution and compliance. Beyond technical work, tax is also evolving with digitalisation, allowing me to learn and leverage Information Technology (IT) Software to streamline tax compliance processes and implementation of BEPS Pillar Two.

Then and now

Starting without an accounting background was a steep learning curve for me. Still, I am grateful to my team members for fostering a strong culture of learning, growth, and team spirit that helped me build confidence in my technical and professional skills. The leaders here have become not just career mentors, but life mentors too. More recently, with the introduction of BEPS Pillar Two, much of the work now involves navigating uncertainty, adapting quickly to global developments, and integrating IT software solutions to meet the new BEPS requirements.

Essential skills

A firm grasp of tax principles, attention to detail, and the ability to apply tax rules to clients’ specific situations are key in this role. It also requires understanding clients’ needs, thinking out of the box within the boundaries of the rules and regulations, and finding practical solutions. These skills were developed over time through hands-on experience, guidance from mentors, and exposure to a broad range of engagements.

Advice for graduates

Congrats on making it through university, that is a big step. Once you start working, the real learning begins. Feeling out of your depth at times is part of the process, especially early on, but it pushes you to grow in ways the classroom may not prepare you for. Enjoy learning and making new friends along the way; it makes the journey even more meaningful.

As a frequent mallgoer and fresh graduate, CapitaLand’s Retail Leasing Graduate Programme appealed to me as it was the gateway into the heart of Singapore’s retail scene. Although I majored in Geography, I was keen to look beyond conventional industries often associated with Geography graduates. Geographers are not restricted to environmentalrelated industries! Geography explores not just spaces, but the human dynamics—economic, social, cultural, and political—that shape them. Retail brings these forces together, which led me to explore CapitaLand Retail as a space where they converge.

About my job

To maintain the vibrancy of our retail scene, I am constantly searching for fresh and exciting retail concepts to add to our portfolio. I connect with retailers, local and abroad, to explore leasing opportunities for retail properties managed by CapitaLand. The dynamic nature of retail makes it interesting, as every engagement with retailers brings about different perspectives.

What I enjoy most about my job

Witnessing store openings excites me! One of the greatest joys at work is the opportunity to see the brands that our team took time to court opening in the malls. Every new brand adds colour to our malls and smiles to our shoppers. Through collective effort, we add excitement to every shopping experience. The many happy and satisfied shoppers are what fulfils me. There is no greater achievement than knowing that my work benefits the community.

Then and now

With limited knowledge of real estate, property management and workplace practices, there was much to learn when I started my role. I am thankful to my mentors, who have equipped me with the relevant skills and knowledge, enabling me to develop into an increasingly independent contributor. As I progress in my leasing journey, I am in progress to sharpen my negotiation and problem-solving skills, empowering me to achieve more and contribute further.

Essential skills

Interpersonal skills are a prerequisite, but grit and confidence are a must-have to tide you through the myriads of characters you will encounter in this client-facing role.

Advice for graduates

Be open in your ways of doing and to the sounds you hear. Strive towards excellence and you will find a place for your unique contributions and character. You will be surprised at what the world has to offer. Do not hesitate to ask questions, it is the key to discoveries.

THRIVING IN A DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT

CHEN HAOMING

Duty Terminal Manager, Airport Management, Changi Airport Group (CAG)

Over time, I have found that the sheer unpredictability of our work is both its most interesting and challenging aspect. The variety of situations we handle differ in complexity and impact, thus demanding strong coordination, resourcefulness and critical thinking.

What I enjoy most about my job

I thrive under pressure, so the dynamic nature of airport operations, where no two days are the same, appeals to me. The breadth of activities within Changi’s terminals also gives me front-row access to different facets of the airport community, thus constantly broadening my perspectives. However, what truly keeps me going is the lasting impact my colleagues

and I make - working with airport partners to problem-solve and transform stressful predicaments into delightful memories for passengers is indescribably fulfilling.

Then and now

When I first started, a significant challenge was balancing information overload with real-time decision-making. For example, disruptions like system outages are time-sensitive and require quickthinking and coordination. I used to second-guess myself, lacking the confidence and operational instinct that comes with experience. Today, I challenge myself to enhance my strategic foresight, to anticipate and prevent issues before they occur.

Essential skills

Ensuring a smooth and seamless passenger journey requires sharp critical thinking, prioritisation and adaptability. Much like orchestra conductors, we synchronise efforts across agencies, ensuring unified responses. It is thus crucial for us to be decisive leaders, team players and effective communicators leveraging robust working relationships. To enact impactful solutions, we must be creative, resourceful and eager to learn.

Advice for graduates

Be proactive in seeking diverse opportunities that value-add to your portfolio and demonstrate initiative, resilience and work ethic. Be versatile, keep networking and embrace change in this everevolving industry. Most importantly, pursue what you love. You only live once, so hone your craft and do what excites you!

Watching students’ eyes light up with understanding, helping them grasp new concepts – it stirred something in me. While pursuing my English literature degree, teaching moved from being just another career option to a clear purpose. Through the MOE Teaching Internship Programme and midterm Teaching Award, I not only funded my studies independently, but also discovered that teaching was exactly where I belonged.

About my job

In my current role at the Recruitment Centre, I have the rewarding responsibility of bringing future educators into the teaching service. The skills I developed as a teacher – connecting with students and people, understanding diverse perspectives, and working with stakeholders – serve me well as I help identify like-minded individuals to join me in inspiring the next generation.

What I enjoy most about my job

I started my career as a classroom teacher. My years in the classroom shaped me in many ways. Every day brought new opportunities to inspire students and help them overcome challenges. Beyond the classroom, I piloted automated marking tools with the Educational Technology Division, advocated for Pure Literature in secondary schools, and contributed to national curriculum development. These experiences taught me that being a teacher extends far beyond the classroom – it is about nurturing growth and building partnerships across the fraternity. After such fulfilling work, I appreciate how the structured

school holidays let me recharge through adventure: skydiving, snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef, and witnessing the ‘Big Five’ on an African safari.

Then and now

Being a teacher has always been at the heart of what I do. Whether in the classroom or at headquarters (HQ), I have learnt that education offers many ways to make a difference. As a beginning teacher, I developed skills that built a strong foundation for my career. Now at HQ, I am thriving in a different but equally engaging environment. MOE’s supportive culture has enabled me to grow while staying true to my identity as an educator. Looking ahead to 2026, I am excited about returning to the classroom, bringing with me valuable insights from HQ.

Essential skills

Teaching honed my ability to connect with students and collaborate with fellow educators – skills that prove invaluable for my current role as I engage with diverse stakeholders. Learning new skills from supportive colleagues such as Excel and design, I have come to realise it is the core teacher qualities of adaptability and openness to learning that matter. Just as we encourage our students to embrace growth, I find myself modelling these same principles in HQ.

Advice for graduates

My journey from classroom teacher to recruitment, and soon back to teaching, shows the diverse possibilities within MOE. While teaching remains at our core, there are many ways to contribute. What unites us all, whether in schools or HQ, is one powerful mission: nurturing the next generation and shaping Singapore’s future. The beauty of joining MOE is that you are not just signing up for a job; you are becoming part of something bigger.

PURSUING GROWTH AND INNOVATION

2013: Graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from NTU and joined the Mobile Equipment team in PSA Singapore 2018-2023: Deepened professional and technical Engineering skillsets with rotations to oversee Yard Crane and Quay Crane teams 2024: Took up a 3-month overseas posting in Thailand

“Whether we are optimising quay crane performance, rolling out predictive maintenance tools, or trialing new energy solutions, our work directly supports PSA’s mission to build smarter, more resilient and sustainable ports.”

Getting started

“Innovative” and “forward-looking” were what came to mind when researching about PSA. What stood out was their strong push for cutting-edge technology to stay ahead and drive change in what is usually perceived to be a “traditional” industry. That led me to apply for their Mechanical Engineering role upon graduation.

What impressed me most was the people – their warm welcome and genuine camaraderie created an empowering environment from day one. Twelve years on, I am proud to be part of the team powering the world’s busiest transhipment hub, including the world’s largest automated container terminal at Tuas Port.

About my job

As an engineer at PSA, I lead my team in developing solutions that enhance terminal operations and improve port equipment efficiency. Whether we are optimising quay crane performance, or trialing new energy solutions, our work directly supports PSA’s mission to build smarter, more resilient and sustainable ports.

Oftentimes, our projects require close collaboration with Operations, IT and external vendors. For example, we work together to integrate data analytics and sensor technology to optimise maintenance cycles, reduce downtime, and improve operational reliability – delivering tangible gains in productivity and sustainability.

What I enjoy most about my job

The dynamic environment, taking ownership of meaningful projects, and growth opportunities! Last year, I went on a 3-month posting to one of PSA’s overseas terminals in Thailand. This hands-on experience at a smaller setup (than what I am used to in Singapore) allowed me to observe how the different Operations, Engineering and Commercial functions overlapped. It helped me grasp the interdependencies

between departments and the unique strategic and operational challenges of managing an overseas terminal. Now back home, I have developed a deeper appreciation for designing engineering solutions that are both technically sound and operationally practical, while keeping the bigger picture in mind.

Then and now

As my expertise grew, innovation became a bigger part of my role, beyond equipment maintenance. This keeps work fresh and rewarding as I am constantly learning and pushing beyond my comfort zone. Staying agile and proactive has been key for my team and I as we explore emerging technologies like machine learning, automation and digital twin simulations.

Essential skills

Having a strong technical foundation is just the beginning. To thrive as an engineer at PSA, it is equally important to understand the business and operational context – how things work on the ground, and how our engineering choices impact broader business goals. Engineering challenges within the port are often complex and multi-faceted, so critical thinking, adaptability, and a growth mindset really matter.

I have also come to appreciate the value of collaboration and leadership. Whether it is mentoring juniors, presenting to senior stakeholders, or facilitating crossfunctional discussions, these skills make all the difference.

Advice for graduates

If you are considering engineering, especially at PSA, stay curious and ask questions! Knowing the “why” has helped me more than just mechanically following steps. Most importantly, be ready to grow – not just in your portfolio, but also by embracing a global mindset and new experiences!

STRIVING FOR MEANINGFUL IMPACT

PANG JING REN

Team Lead, Singapore Food Agency

2013: Graduated with a Degree in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and joined the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), now known as the Singapore Food Agency (SFA)

2021: Awarded with Long Service Award (10 years) and got promoted

2023: Awarded with National Day Awards’ Commendation Medal

2024: Awarded with Singapore Sustainability Scholarship (post-graduate)

2025: Graduated with Master of Science (MSc) in Food Science and Nutrition from the National University of Singapore

“It is meaningful to be at the frontline of protecting public health and safeguarding food safety through these

investigations.”

Getting started

I chose a career in food safety to make a meaningful impact on public health. After completing my Chemistry degree at NUS, I joined AVA (now SFA) in 2013. In my first role as an Executive Manager overseeing vegetable farms, I gained firsthand experience in Singapore’s agricultural practices and food safety regulations - from inspecting farms to ensuring compliance with food safety standards. I was given the opportunity to further my studies at NUS when I was awarded an SFA post-graduate scholarship in 2024. I am better equipped with food safety and nutritional science which I apply in what I do every day.

About my job

As Team Lead of the Special Incident Response Department, I investigate foodborne illness outbreaks and handle cases where food products have labelling infringements or do not meet food safety standards. It is meaningful to be at the frontline of protecting public health and safeguarding food safety through these investigations. Each case is an opportunity to understand the root cause of the issue and strengthen food safety measures to prevent future occurrence. As no two cases are exactly alike, I have to constantly adapt and learn new things given the dynamic nature of the work.

What I enjoy most about my job

I value the collaborative nature of food safety investigations as we are all working towards a common goal. The work with diverse stakeholders such as laboratory teams, food businesses, and other Government agencies to solve complex food safety issues together has been especially rewarding.

Then and now

When I first started, my challenges were mainly technicalunderstanding food safety systems, interpreting laboratory results, and learning investigation protocols. Now, as Team Lead, I have more responsibilities like leading food poisoning investigations, coordinating complex issues across agencies, and making decisions based on scientific assessments.

Essential skills

Good knowledge of food science, epidemiology, and investigation protocols are fundamental in conducting food safety investigations. Crisis management skills are also essential, particularly when handling high-profile cases that need fast decisions to be made and clear communication with various stakeholders. I built these skills through my studies and onthe-job experience. The experience gained from past investigations, along with mentorship from more experienced colleagues, helped me to further strengthen these skills.

Advice for graduates

Graduates interested in this field would need to acquire both technical knowledge and practical skills. It is equally crucial to hone your analytical thinking, communication skills and ability to work well under pressure. Above all, stay curious and passionate about safeguarding public health. Though food safety work can be demanding, knowing that consumers are well protected makes it worthwhile.
