Teaching Assistant for Residential Learning

General Description: The Teaching Assistant (TA1) for Residential Learning is considered a staff member within University Housing. The Teaching Assistants for Residential Learning (2 positions) are directly supervised by professional staff members of the Residential Learning Team. TAs are responsible for completing 20 hours a week through regular office hours, coteaching non-credit and potentially credit bearing connected courses, weekly check-ins with their direct supervisor, and some weekend requirements as needed. The TA serves as an integral staff member connected our Residential Learning Communities (RLCs) with the academic programs and colleges associated with those communities ensuring that the learning inside the classroom is continued outside of the classroom in the residence hall setting. TAs support University Housing’s Residential Curriculum and Georgia Southern’s academic learning goals in the residence halls. These positions assist in departmental efforts to create supportive learning environments that enable students to be personally, academically, and professionally successful. By intentionally designing meaningful experiences, collaborating with campus partners on highimpact practices, and assessing departmental efforts – these TAs allow us to achieve our departmental learning goals. The TA is expected to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate academic integrity, and will be trusted with student information.

Job Specifications/Qualifications:

● Candidates should have a strong desire to support the academic and social needs of residence hall students through the Residential Curriculum model, the Residential Learning Community Program, and through programming, recognition efforts, and effective campus partnerships.

● Candidates must be enrolled as a full time Graduate student at Georgia Southern University for fall and spring semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

● Candidates must be able to work with diverse populations.

● Candidates must be able to physically lift a minimum of 25 pounds.

● Candidates must successfully complete a background investigation.

● The position is considered the TA’s primary, non-academic activity and hired GA’s may not accept other employment at the university. The GA’s may not have significant responsibility in an extracurricular activity. Outside involvements should be discussed with the supervisor at the beginning of each semester to assess appropriateness.

In addition to the above-mentioned qualifications, these additionally preferred qualifications are desired of the candidate:

● Enrolled in Georgia Southern’s Master of Education in Higher Education in Administration graduate program or in a master’s program within the College of Education.

● Qualified candidates must be able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate flexibility, academic integrity, problem-solving, and effective communication skills. Ability to take initiative on ambiguous projects is desired.

● Qualified candidates must be able to generate and maintain appropriate documentation pertinent to various processes and procedures as needed.

● Prior experience assessing programs, working with curricular models, program planning, teaching, training staff, and/or working in a residence hall environment preferred.

● Candidates must have a basic understanding of educational practices and how to effectively analyze data.

Remuneration: The position’s appointment period is 10 months (August to May) and salary for the position is $10,000/year (paid monthly). TAs must be accepted unconditionally into the Graduate School to receive a partial tuition waiver and out-ofstate fee waiver. As this position is classified as a graduate assistantship, standard employee benefits are not provided. This position may be required to report to campus for training 2-3 weeks early in exchange for additional pay (determined by the length of time required for training). This position does not provide housing, but the TA may choose to live on campus at their own expense, as availability exists

Duties & Responsibilities:

● Support the curricular and co-curricular lesson plans and strategies for residential students in a connected First Year Experience course based on a specialized housing community (i.e. Eagle Educators, the LAB, and Innovation RLCs).

● Co-instruct 1-2 First Year Experience courses for residential students in specialized living communities.

● Co-leading one or more Residential Learning Communities.

● Co-facilitating student learning and departmental programmatic efforts.

● Co-manage the online learning management system D2L/Folio for the residential students in a shared First Year Experience course.

● Evaluating departmental assessment results and producing reports to stakeholders.

● Maintaining accurate records of residential student activity fee funds.

● Producing and maintaining support resources for student and professional staff.

● Participating in internal and external professional development opportunities.

● Attending committee meetings and one-on-one supervision meetings with supervisor.

● Assisting with 3 scheduled University Open Houses each year and prospective student tours as needed.

● Assisting University Housing with staff recruitment, interviewing, and training as needed.

● Attending workshops and training sessions as needed or required.

● Maintaining a neat, organized, and clean work area.

● Performing other duties as assigned.
