P

eople. Purpose. Action: Growing ourselves to grow others is Georgia Southern’s vision statement, and is particularly relevant to what we do every day in this Division. We help people find their purpose and assist them in taking action to fulfill that purpose. In short, we help people become the best version of themselves. To that end, we are changing our name from the Division of Continuing Education to the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE). In the past, we were known mainly for our two conference centers, the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah and the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center in Statesboro. The Coastal Georgia Center was closed during consolidation with Armstrong State University in 2018; and, the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center was closed when East Georgia State College moved into that space in early 2022. Nevertheless, the Nessmith-Lane Ballroom and Auditorium are still available to the public, and we still provide excellent conference planning services (both on and off-campus), and coordinate events for external clients on all three Georgia Southern campuses. The reason we added professional to our name was to draw attention to the various professional development opportunities we also provide through career training certificate programs, workforce skill-building courses, leadership development programs, and customized training for business, industry, and government. The number of programs offered, as well as the number of enrollments for each program, has increased by over 200% in the past two years. CPE is becoming known for its’ high-quality in-person and online training programs that provide a great return on investment. Organizations such as Brasseler USA, Brodie International, Crider Foods, Daniel Defense, Robins Airforce Base, and SNF Holding Company are all organizations who have recently partnered with us and our network of subject matter experts and Georgia Southern faculty to provide excellent training for their employees. Our responsiveness and flexibility in developing and delivering on-site and on-demand training for front-line workers to top-level executives has been the main reason these organizations are now turning to CPE for their training needs. Also, in the past two years, hundreds of military personnel and their spouses have taken advantage of our online career training programs and are rapidly advancing in their careers. As school starts and we say goodbye to summer, many people will reflect on their current job or career path. They will consider applying for a different job, a promotion, or even switching to a new career. If this sounds like you, I invite you to read this publication and visit our website to find out what CPE offers that can help you find your purpose and take the actions needed to grow into the kind of professional you really want to be. Also, you will not want to miss other big announcements coming in late fall/early spring regarding our new location on Hwy 301 and some exciting new programs, so follow us on social media or join our mailing list. In the meantime, if there’s anything we can do to meet your continuing and professional educational needs, we would be delighted to hear from you. Contact us at 912-478-5555 for any inquiries you may have. Thank you and happy fall! Sincerely,

THE GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN HAS BECOME DISRUPTED... Supply Chain Certification

Chris Barnes taught supply chain management for three years and has been a practitioner for over 30 years. Barnes has experience in developing and managing multiple clients, engineering consulting, strategic planning, and operational improvement projects in supply chain management. Barnes currently serves as Senior Vice President of Enablement with One Network Enterprises.

If you have ever purchased a product, you've played a role in the supply chain process. Supply chain management is essential to businesses and can be an asset to your company’s success. Earning your APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) will make you a recognized expert in the supply chain field setting you apart from your colleagues. There are a plethora of career opportunities within the supply chain field, and this course will give you insight into where to find them and become the most effective employee. The APICS CSCP will assist you in growing your career into other opportunities. This course will help you gain the skills to effectively manage global supply chain activities involving suppliers, plants, distributors and customers worldwide. Instructor Chris Barnes has designed this 14-week course not just to implement and understand key terminology but to take the terminology, and apply it to what individuals are doing in the field. “I bring in the reality of what people are doing. Not theoretical, here’s a definition, go out and memorize the definition, but here’s how companies are applying it in everyday organizations.”- Chris Barnes There is still a demand for Supply Chain jobs, it is a matter of understanding how to set yourself apart from the rest. If you have 100 resumes and three of them have the APICS CSCP, that just means that person did something a little more exceptional to stand out from the crowd.

THE RETURN OF THE SOCIAL GERONTOLOGY COMMUNITY CONFERENCE

T

he Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference promotes successful aging and positive social change. Our goals are to enhance the quality of life, mental and physical health, and social well-being of older adults at all levels of capability. They also work to maximize the knowledge, effectiveness and overall wellbeing of all people, professional and non-professional, who support older adults. October 2022 will see the conference hosted in Statesboro, Georgia for the first time since 2020. To learn more about the history and vision for the future of the conference, Georgia Southern’s Division of Continuing & Professional Education interviewed the chair of the conference, Dr. Adrienne Cohen, who is also the Department Chair for Sociology and Anthropology How did you start the Conference on Social Gerontology? Dr. Cohen: The conference started in 2016 to help fulfill our mission “to make a positive difference in the lives of aging persons and their families and communities through increasing awareness of as well as fostering and supporting the needs and activities of a diverse older adult population at multiple levels.” Members of the Center felt that we needed to provide a venue for increasing awareness of the realities and needs of older adults in Southeast Georgia. 10

Dr. Adrienne Cohen, Chair of the Social Gerontology Community Conference

What impact does the Social Gerontology Conference have? Dr. Cohen: The conference helps to increase the capacity of professionals in the field of aging to deliver their services using best practices. It provides an opportunity for faculty and professionals in the field to share what they have learned with others who may benefit from their experiences. For faculty, the opportunity to share their knowledge in an applied way can be very exciting. The conference provides students with a chance to become to become excited about working in the field of gerontology and allows them to network with professionals in the field where they can learn about future internships and jobs.

INCREASING AWARENESS What does Social Gerontology mean to you?

Dr. Cohen: Gerontology, as a discipline, focuses on the lifelong experiences of aging. Social Gerontology has a specific focus on the social aspects of aging, how the world around us affects us as we age and how we affect the world around us as we enter and leave various stages of life. What can attendees expect from the Social Gerontology Conference? Dr. Cohen: The conference is very interactive. We have a wellness activity in the morning, our workshops provide opportunities for people to interact with each other and our luncheon and keynote are also times of meeting others who are interested in the field of aging. This will be an opportunity to interact with professionals, faculty, students, and older adults. We will all be learning from each other. I believe learning is best when learning is fun and thought provoking. In addition, people will have time to interact and learn about what other folks who are interested in aging issues are doing.

Are there any specific programs you’ve started that reinvest into communities? Dr. Cohen: The Center for Social Gerontology is a trans-disciplinary center. We work across disciplines on campus including psychology, sociology, family development, public health, health professionals and many more. Outside of the University, we work with folks from various local, regional, and state-wide programs focusing on older adults. We learn from others and we teach others what we have learned. We encourage and have participation in the Center from faculty, professionals, C O M students and older adults.
