MY GSTAAD AND ITS CASTLE

I

t’s not a fairy tale, it’s real: This is what I tell myself every day when I take in the magical beauty of our surroundings. And it is what the first guests must have thought when they stepped through the door of the newly opened Gstaad Palace exactly 110 years ago. Much has changed since then – but the most important things have stayed the same. The majestic mountains are still watching over us, the air is fresh and crisp, our winter wonderland is alive and thriving. Once again we invested into refreshing the Palace experience for our dear guests; this Winter you may enjoy our new Outdoor Jacuzzi which we doubled in size, an institution of the Palace its Salon Bridge is decorated in new glamour and some rooms & suites are entirely renovated. On the following pages, we invite you to a firework of news and stories. Like Franz W. Faeh, our Culinary Director, who will take you on a journey around the globe. This year, we celebrate the 50th birthday of the GreenGo, our legendary nightclub. For the little ones, Sammy is waiting with a series of joyful kids entertainment, while adults can dive into our culinary and spa offerings.

PS: As we continue to adapt to a volatile situation, we may have to adjust the programme to new policies and restrictions. Please use the QR code below for the latest information.

We’re looking forward to welcome you soon here, at this fairy tale castle, to savour the moment and make memories that last a lifetime. Andrea Scherz

THE GSTAAD PALACE, A FAMILY AFFAIR 110 years of history made in Switzerland

Iconic since 1913

A Swiss gem

6

The story of the Gstaad Palace makes for an exciting read. Guests from all over the world flocked to Gstaad when the Palace opened, but the First World War put an end to the boom. After the war came the golden twenties and thirties. With new tennis courts, a pool and many other amenities, our establishment was all the rage – until another world war broke out and the Palace had to tighten its belt again.

The 1950s and 1960s brought a dazzling recovery, with notable figures attending historymaking events, until the 1973 oil crisis triggered another slowdown. The Palace then enjoyed a steady upturn – benefitting from the accomplished leadership of Ernst Andrea Scherz for 33 years. Third generation owner Andrea Scherz has been at the helm since 2001.

In 1938, the Scherz-Bezzola family took over the running of the hotel.

Magicians? Indeed, hospitality enthusiasts ! Memories, more than in a fairy tale book

FROM GSTAAD TO HONG KONG

by Culinary Director Franz W. Faeh

From Saanen to Hong Kong: Franz W. Faeh, our Culinary Director, has travelled the globe and cooked for the royals of this world – but returning to the Gstaad Palace has made his childhood dream come true. “Returning to the Palace was a step I always intended to take”, he remembers. “Both my father and grandfather have worked here. Even as a child, when I walked by on my way to school, I knew: one day I will be a chef at the Palace.” We, for one, are grateful his dream has become a reality!

F

ranz W. Faeh is living his childhood dream. He is Culinary Director in ‘his’ Gstaad Palace, the familiar landmark he walked past as a child every day on his way to school. Ever determined, Faeh completed his apprenticeship here in 1981 and spent the following 13 years working for the Regent Group in Hong Kong, Jakarta and Bangkok. He has cooked for many a royal personage and in 2021 was himself crowned ‘Hotel Chef of the Year’ by the Swiss business magazine BILANZ. Additionally, he has recently been honoured as Conseiller Culinaire of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. Mr Faeh, you’re 60 and fit as a fiddle. What’s your secret ingredient?

Please continue reading on palace.ch

Well, I can’t really tell you that, I’m afraid... But seriously, you have to keep moving, take regular exercise. I’m out on my bike a lot and get enough sleep. And in the low-seasons, I travel far and wide to pick up inspiring new ideas. Speaking of inspiration, who are your heroes? In the field of gastronomy, that’s Norbert Niederkofler and Reto Mathis. Michael Schumacher in sports and AC/DC in music.

GSTAAD, COME UP AND SLOW DOWN

THE BLACK WALL, A NEW SLOPE AT GLACIER 3000

THE GOLDENPASS EXPRESS, A DREAM TRAIN

This is great news for skiing in the Gstaad region. The Black Wall is a brand new run at Glacier 3000. Connecting the intermediate station Cabane to the Col du Pillon, this new black slope crosses the cliff thanks to a 265 meters long tunnel. At the exit of the tunnel, the run begins with a 41° section, making it one of the steepest slopes in the world. It is a third slope of more than 1’000 meters of altitude difference that completes the offer of Glacier 3000, with the Olden Slope (7 km) and the Red Run (8 km).

The pioneers of the 19th century dreamed of it, the GoldenPass Express will now become reality. From 11 December 2022, this train connects Montreux, Gstaad and Interlaken without change. In Zweisimmen, the GoldenPass Express magically switches from metre gauge to standard gauge (1m435). A revolutionary variable-gauge bogie under the train makes it possible. Passengers can enjoy the scenery through the panoramic windows and can choose from three different travel classes: Prestige, 1st and 2nd class.

now queens and ice princes aside, Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland really is the stuff of winter fairy tales. A small village with a truly cosmopolitan feel, Gstaad epitomises the alpine spirit. It’s the place where all those who value natural pleasures, living traditions and true luxury come together.

14

The winter wonderland around Gstaad offers everything from skiing – both downhill and cross-country – tobogganing and winter hiking, through to a wide range of culinary delights to be enjoyed in the winter sun. And at the heart of it all, resplendent in white, is the Gstaad Palace.

COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY since 1913

S

ince its opening in 1913, long before sustainability was a thing, the Gstaad Palace has strived to act in the interests of nature, people, and the environment. The Gstaad Hotel Laundry, for example, has been a first-of-its-kind when it was founded in the 1960s, by the Gstaad Palace enabling local hoteliers to save on transport and water.

Our employees live on site, and thus don’t have to hit the road to get the work every day. Wood chips from local forests and sustainable district heating warm our rooms in the winter. As Alpine dwellers, we know and respect nature from the bottom of our hearts – and we want to make sure future generations can enjoy her too.

‘HAUSER & WIRTH’ IN GSTAAD This winter, the international gallery Hauser & Wirth brings an exciting programme of exhibitions and outdoor presentations of world-class art to the Saanenland.

O

nce again, the gallery presents an outstanding selection of modern and contemporary masterworks from its roster of artists at the Vieux Chalet, the former chalet of Gunther Sachs and Hauser & Wirth’s home in Gstaad since 2015. For many years, Hauser & Wirth’s activities in Gstaad helmed by James Koch, Partner and Executive Director at Hauser & Wirth - have included a longstanding tradition of public art projects, including a projection by Jenny Holzer in 2019 and a Martin Creed neon in 2020, both on the façade of the Gstaad Palace. This season, Hauser & Wirth has collaborated with the Gstaad Palace once more to present two major sculptures by the internationally renowned, Johannesburg-based artist, William Kentridge, in the gardens of the Palace. Titled © see separate caption information ‘Her’ (2022) and ‘Cape Silver’ (2018), these two works will be in dialogue with one another against the mountainous backdrop of Gstaad. The sculptures will be complemented by a solo exhibition of William Kentridge at the exhibition

space Tarmak22 in Gstaad, titled ‘William Kentridge. Singer Solo’, presenting work from the past four years, including a 6-metre-wide triptych titled ‘Weigh All Tears’ (2021), alongside a sound installation work, sculpture and tapestry. Organised closely with Goodman Gallery, the presentation in Gstaad follows a major solo show at the Royal Academy of Arts in London that opened in September 2022, the biggest exhibition of the artist’s work in the UK to date. In addition, every Friday throughout the season, Hauser & Wirth will screen a film or documentary at the Cine Theatre Gstaad. This cinematic series, titled CinemArt, offers unique views into the lives and work of significant international artists, artistic movements and art world figures, including William Kentridge, David Hammons, Cindy Sherman, Gabriele Buffet-Picabia, Henry Geldzahler and more.
