Make New Friends I keep this picture on my desk as a reminder of my Girl Scout legacy. The photo is of my mother’s Girl Scout troop. My grandmother was her leader, and my mother’s godmother was her co-leader. The Girl Scout troop was in St. Albans, Queens, a thriving African American community. In Girl Scouts, my mother made lifelong friendships. Many of the girls in the photo grew up to be my “aunties,” women I could count on to guide and support me on my journey. And the daughters of these women are now my close friends. As we journey into our 105th Girl Scout year here in Nassau County, and I think about the traditions of Girl Scouts, the typical favorites come to mind first. Favorites like s’mores, sit-upons, badges, and camp songs. But the Girl Scout tradition that stands out to me most is that of friendship. Friendship is the backbone of our mission. Friendship secures our foundation, stabilizes our core values, and strengthens us to move forward. Friendship is Girl Scouts’ “secret sauce.” In my Brownie Girl Scout Handbook from the 1970s, there is a section called “Be a Friend Maker.” “As a Brownie, you make all sorts of things. What are the best things you make? You cannot carry them in your pocket. Yet you always want them with you. Friends of course!” —RMB
