APRIL 2022
Girlfriends Girlfriends is a publication of Girl Scouts of Nassau County
The Girl Scout Movement is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. Our legacy stands strong and resilient. Celebrating such a big milestone makes you think of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. I recently shared a conversation with a young Girl Scout I met at one of our Traveling Trefoil mobile programs. I get a lot of questions from girls at our programs but this was the first time I got questions like these. She asked me two serious questions: l What do I think Juliette Gordon Low was thinking when she started Girl Scouts? l How did she get people to believe in her? These are things we should all consider as we support the Girl Scout Movement and its growth. Her questions really made me think about the Movement—That it is a movement. Girl Scouts was created for change and it was created to change. Over the years we continue to stand by Juliette’s mission, our Promise and our Law. At the core of who we are, we continue to want the best for the girls in our community as they discover what leadership is, who they are, and how they want to make the world a better place. I am always amazed at the vision our girls have and their efforts to contribute to this changing world.
We Love Our Girl Scout Volunteers Did you know that April is Volunteer Appreciation Month? We get excited for this time because we get to honor all of the amazing Girl Scout volunteers who lead and mentor girls in powerful ways throughout the year. Additionally, on April 22, we celebrate Girl Scout Leader’s Day! Whether you’re a troop leader, troop Cookie Manager, Mags&Munchies Manager, an adult volunteer who assists during troop meetings, a service team member, troop finance chair, or troop chaperone—We recognize your hard work and thank you for all that you do to continue the Girl Scout Mission.
Our girls can’t do that alone, however, they need the support of their family and the commitment of our volunteers. On behalf of our girls and Girl Scouts of Nassau County, I want to thank our volunteers. It is Volunteer Appreciation Month and as Girl Scouts we know that the extension of the Girl Scout Mission comes through the hands and hearts of our volunteers. We could not get this work done without you. Thank you.
To celebrate the volunteer in your life that always goes the extra mile, here are some ways to show your appreciation.
In March, we recognized our amazing volunteers by giving 85 recognitions at our Adult Recognitions dinner. After being in the Service Center parking lot last year, a dinner felt like an extra special way to be together and celebrate the amazing work our volunteers do. In May, we will continue that recognition at our first Legacy Luncheon honoring those Girl Scout volunteers and champions we have lost over the past two years. We will also introduce our new Legacy Award for local leaders driving change within Nassau County and tomorrow’s innovators. The Legacy Award will debut at our 2023 luncheon. Stay tuned for the application process this spring. —RMB

“My purpose [is] to go on with my heart and soul, devoting all my energies to Girl Scouts, and heart and hand with them, we will make our lives and the lives of the future girls happy, healthy, and holy.” —Juliette Gordon Low
l Make something personalized for them—a card, baked good, or craft.
l Surprise them with a gift from the Girl Scout Shop. l Give them a shout-out with a special social media post. Create a post with a nice picture or sentiment that tells them how you feel. l Send them a video thanking them for all they’ve helped you with.
