In this new membership year, we will continue to explore new and innovative ways for girls to make the world a better place. To do that, we will need to improve access to Girl Scouts for all girls, we need to be in communities more— not just pass through them—and we need to continue to listen to what our girls need. We will also continue to engage, support, and celebrate our volunteers and families in traditional and new ways. We know that without our exceptional volunteers and strong family engagement, our stellar staff could not do their job. Girl Scouts of Nassau County remains one of the best councils in the country and in this upcoming membership year, we will continue to shine!

Welcome to the 2022-2023 membership year. Girl Scouts of Nassau County is looking forward to a year of discovery, renewal, and exceptionalism. Girl Scouts remains the preeminent organization for girls in Nassau County. The last couple of years have brought challenges to our girls that no one could have imagined. Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE), Girl Scouts have always learned the importance of persevering through adversity and drawing on resil ience and courage which are crucial to meeting challenges—skills that our girls have em ployed as they’ve faced these obstacles. Here in Nassau County, we provided girls with lots of opportunities to build their skills and explore the world around them. Last year, with the help of new partners, we welcomed our new Traveling Trefoil, we explored art with a Bailey Foundation grant, learned about the earth and environment with National Grid, and boosted our health and wellness with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. In addition to these experiences, our girls develop the competencies, positive values, and strong sense of self to do big things, as well as the grit and strength that are essential to solving both everyday and once-a-century challenges. That’s the Girl Scout difference.
Girlfriends
Our Girl Scouts received a painting lesson at the Nassau County Museum of Art led by a PhD artist instructor on how to paint their own Impressionist Oncelandscape!their masterpieces were complete, they got to learn even more about Impressionism by taking a tour of the exhibition, Impressionism: A World View. During the tour they got to use their new knowledge to discover different styles of painting while taking part in a museum scavenger hunt. One Girl Scout excitedly told us after the event, “I’ve been inspired by everything I’ve seen today!”

In the nine years that I have worked with Girl Scouts of Nassau County, I’ve taken every new challenge as an opportunity for both personal growth and to serve our mission to develop girls of courage, confidence, and Havingcharacter.lived in Nassau County for more than 40 years, I can attest that it is this generation of girls that have changed the consciousness of our community to better understand the importance of belonging and inclusion. I have no doubt that as they take on leadership roles in their lives and careers, they will change the world for the better. I’m proud to be part of the organization that has embraced and developed these girls for so long and incredibly humbled and honored to lead our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts to ensure every girl in Nassau County knows she has a place here at Girl Scouts and our community. I believe that this new position is critical to our organization’s growth. One of my initial goals is to create a more innovative way to attract and engage new members and cultivate a healthy membership base. This will enable us to further our reach in new areas to provide all girls with the opportunity to be part of the largest girl-led organization in the world. My role, within the realm of membership, includes new marketing initiatives, timelines, messaging, programs, and incentives. By comparison, developing diversity and inclusion programs seems far more complex as it delves into areas that some find polarizing or would rather ignore. I think Juliette Gordon Low would be proud to see we are being true to our founding principles and have taken a leadership position on an issue that will no doubt pave the way for our continued growth and relevance as an organization and a society.

Summer Camp Camp Blue Bay summer camp campers were excited to be back at camp enjoy ing all their favorite camp activities and traditions like roasting s’mores over a campfire, singing songs, and making new friends.
This summer, one of Camp Blue Bay’s longest standing traditions, Night Owls, took off in full swing with 32 campers in grades 9-11. Some of the highlights of this two-week long program are sailing on Gardiner’s Bay, outdoor cooking, and stargazing. Night Owls is more than just a program—it’s a Camp Blue Bay mile stone, something that campers who come to Blue Bay year after year look forward to one day participating in. “Hi, I’m Faith and I have been going to Camp Blue Bay since I was in first grade. One of the many things that I love about Camp Blue Bay is that it becomes a second home. This year after many years of wanting to be in this group, I finally get to join Night Owls and I have never been more excited! I finally get to go sailing in the bay and get to stay up late doing fun activities with my group. I am so excited for this summer!” —Faith “Being a Night Owl, you get to spend two weeks with the same group of people, and you get extremely close with your new friends. As the oldest group at camp, you gain lifelong skills and memorable experiences like sailing.”
On July 19, Camp Blue Bay joined the camp community to participate in Camp Kindness Day, an event highlighting the practice of intentional kindness that happens every day at American camps. Camp Kindness Day showcased the commitment of Camp Blue Bay to fostering a community for all campers to thrive and ensure everyone at Camp Blue Bay feels they belong and can meaningfully participate in all aspects of Girl Scouting, regardless of ability, age, culture, education, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Campers wrote letters of appreciation to camp staff and friends, painted rocks for a kindness garden, and spoke to what kindness means to them.

Alanah A.
Alanah A. How did you come up with name?this “We came up with this name because Girl Scouts helped develop girls into confident, strong-willed women that continue to break the standards on what females can do.” Alanah A. “We came up with this name by trying to think about what embodied the spirit of Girl Scouts and the young women of this generation including the past to get to where we are today.”
Katherine S. What to expect at Unapologetically Fearless Since 1912?
“Unapologetically Fearless means to have high self esteem and determination. It means you don’t care if others cannot see you doing something; you believe in yourself and continue to persevere to reach your goals.”
15
“You can expect to see women from different backgrounds doing things that aren’t stereotypically associated with girls. Your view of what you can do may also change after seeing girls unapologetically breaking standards and making strides in their career.”
Allie M.
—Katherine S.
What meanFearlessUnapologeticallydoestoyou?
“For me, Unapologetically Fearless means to be independent, strong willed, and confident. It means that you aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right, to voice your opinion even when you are challenged.”
Alanah A. What would you say to a girl who was unsure about attending?
Fearless“Unapologeticallymeansdoing things that may seem scary or out of the norm, without feeling ashamed or embarrassed about doing it.”
“Being a girl and trying to figure out where your passions lie is hard. There are a lot of people and things that try to define what a girl is able to accomplish. But saying things are impossible leaves out the possible pathways you can take! Instead of taking safe routes, dip your toes into unique hob bies and skills. You may open a new doorway that helps you to be unapologetically fearless!”

What a way to enjoy the summer! As a way to celebrate bridging and a successful cookie season, Troop 2210 toured and did some crafts at the New York Marine Rescue Center, which is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. There they learned ways to preserve and protect the marine environment. Way to go Girl Scouts!
