FEBRUARY 2022

The legacy of Girl Scouts is different for everyone.

As we enter the 110th year of the national Girl Scout movement, each of us can look back and look forward with different points of view. The legacy of Girl Scouts always makes me reflect on my grandmother who is very much a part of who I am today. It also makes me think of my years as a Girl Scout Brownie and the last four years as the Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Nassau County. The last couple of years have been unusual. If you recall, we had just finished celebrating the 100th year of our council and we were excited about what 2020 would bring. Then the pandemic brought everything to a halt. Although it was difficult, the pandemic made us a better Girl Scout council—It strengthened our processes, our goals, and our vision. As we move into 2022, we are even more ready than we were in 2020. What does 2022 look like from where I sit? I see us bringing our mission to the community with our new mobile van, the Traveling Trefoil, and finding other ways to engage more directly with girls in the community. I see us strengthening our membership with new program pathways like our Culinary Creations, kickball, and art programs and introducing new programs with new partners to support mental well-being, career exploration, and civic engagement. I also see us continuing to listen to our girls, building the Girl Leadership Committee, and creating other avenues to connect directly with girls. In 2022, we will also focus on expanding our membership to new communities as we strive for better demographic parity and representation. We know that diversity and inclusion make a better Girl Scout experience for our girls and a better Girl Scout council. Finally, we will be diversifying our funding streams so that we can reach more girls with high quality program experiences so they can be the leaders they were meant to be. I challenge you this year to look back not just at the last two years but look back on who you were then and who you have become. Then consider the girl or girls in your life and how you plan to make an impact on their Girl Scout experience. —RMB
