Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s centennial year ended in 2019. We celebrated the 20182019 year by sharing our stories—about the first troop in Lynbrook, fond camping memories, and all of our efforts to reach all girls. We made our founders proud. In my travels around Nassau County, one thing that was evident throughout the year was how much we still are committed to the needs of today’s girls and the purpose of Girl Scouts.

Helping girls discover their interests and leadership potential is STILL ultimately what Girl Scouts is all about.

This year we continued to do all the things you would expect from Girl Scouts, with 91 remarkable Gold Award Girl Scouts and a tech-savvy robotics team going to the world championships, we lead the pack. Over 1,600 girls went outdoors at our first Girl Scouts Love State Parks day, at Camp Blue Bay, and other outdoor programs. GSUSA introduced 42 new high tech and high adventure badges and girls continued to become their best, most confident selves. Our corporate partners and community collaborators continued to show up and support our mission wholeheartedly. Our national organization continued to recognize us for our overall council health and achievements including our retention rates, volunteer satisfaction, and market share.

Over 120 members made a lifetime commitment to the movement. All lifetime memberships are now directly linked to a girl to becoming member, which further supports the movement.

In May, we said goodbye to Wanda Jackson, who served from 2013-2019 as our Chief Volunteer Officer. We welcomed Andrea Elder-Howell as our new Chief Volunteer Officer. We are looking forward to many years of working together and are honored to kick off our new century.

Finally, as we look to 2020, we commit to first and foremost honoring our past and we continue to work hard to stay relevant to today’s girls by leaning on our research-proven, time-tested program that Juliette Low created over 100 years ago.

“The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.”

This quote by Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scout Movement, helped us define our direction for 2019. Girl Scouts of Nassau County is moving into the future while making history today!

Throughout 2019, GSNC continued to focus on reaching and retaining more girls and volunteers. We served 16,357 girls, 5,247 adults, and 1,285 lifetime members resulting in an overall membership of 22,889. This represents more than a 2% increase in our membership for 2019.

As we formulated our plans for the 2019 Girl Scout year, we realized that it was important to honor the history of our first century of Girl Scouting in Nassau County. Our first step in remembering our past was to update our official history book authored by the Living History committee. The original version of this book covered the period of 1918-2008, but so much more history was made in the last ten years; we needed to continue our

story. A History of Girl Scouts of Nassau County was revised and printed, and debuted at our 100th Anniversary Gala. Taking into consideration our current membership and its evolution into a digital world, we also added an electronic version of this book to our website.

Another way we honored our past was through a series of pop-up exhibits situated around Nassau County. These exhibits were located and hosted in county and town facilities during March, and included uniforms from the past, early handbooks, photos, camp gear, badges, and even vintage packaging from the Girl Scout Cookie Program.® We are very grateful to Nassau County, the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay for hosting these exhibits and making them available to our Girl Scouts and the general public.

In recognition of the impact GSNC has made in our community for last 100 years, we needed to host a Centennial celebration. Our goal was to have an event that outshined all the celebrations of the past, and we did it at the 100th Anniversary Gala.

GIRLS PARTICIPATED IN COOKIE PROGRAM

On March 14, 2019 over 400 guests composed of Girl Scouts of Nassau County volunteers, Girl Scouts from across the decades, former staff, board members, and our corporate and community partners gathered at the Garden City Hotel to recognize the accomplishments of four honorees who have supported the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The four honorees were: Melissa Connelly of Hofstra University who received the Go-getter Award, Gloria Baca from Boulevard Home Care Associates who received the Innovator Award, Cathy O’Reilly from DHL Express who received the Risk-taker Award, and Anthony Edelman from Bethpage Federal Credit Union who received the Leader Award. This celebration was enjoyed by all while ensuring that Girl Scouting in Nassau County could continue into the future.

We also created a Centennial Tribute Garden to remember and honor individuals with a significant connection to our council. GSNC worked all year to grow and develop deeper relationships with our supporters. Events like Sip and Savor and Sip and Savor2.0 helped bring new friends to the table while giving our current friends another way to support GSNC.

As we looked to the future, we recognized that we needed to reshape our program offerings and provide new or unique opportunities for girls and their families to participate in as Girl Scouts, while continuing to offer timetested programs. During 2019, we offered 366 council and community level programs that served 5,787 girls.

Our first annual Savannah Speedway Championship, a partnership with Verizon, offered over 400 girls and their families the opportunity to have a “derby” experience. With Verizon’s support, we purchased the necessary equipment to host local competitions in 21 Service Units, with girls moving up to compete on a council level. A key factor in this program was the increased involvement of families. We saw volunteers eagerly transporting the huge track system to their local events; while dads joined in the fun helping their daughters build their cars, cheering them on, and being at the ready to make repairs. We held our first ever Family Appreciation Day at Adventureland in Farmingdale, where more than 1,000 Girl Scouts, families, and friends enjoyed an evening of fun-filled rides. For the second year, the New York Jets hosted a Girl Scout Day with enhanced onfield experiences and a great game against the Oakland Raiders, another great way for families to come together under the Girl Scout program

umbrella. The Girl Scout Cookie Program, a favorite among our families, had 11,773 girls become Cookie CEOs selling 1,262,661 packages of cookies and earning over $1,000,000 in proceeds. They also helped send a “Taste of Home” to our servicemen and women around the world with over 80,000 donated packages of cookies through our Operation Cookie component of the program. Thanks to DHL Express for all their support of this program.

Outdoor experiences have always been a part of the Girl Scout Leadership program. Camp Blue Bay continued to be the focal point for most of our outdoor experiences. The number of girls enjoying all that Camp Blue Bay has to offer during the summer hit 421, an increase for the second year in a row. We had 531 girls and 447 adults participate in council camp programs like our popular Mommy and Me series, Camp Blue Bay Halloween Party, Centennial Troop Camping, as well as adult events like Blast from the Past.

Troop camping continued throughout the year and we saw 473 girls participate with their troop. Responding to our membership’s request for more outdoor programming in Nassau County, we hosted National Girl Scouts Love State Parks day at Valley Stream State Park and the Forever a Girl Scout Campfire at Wantagh Park.

In Girl Scouts, girls learn by doing and one of the ways they mark their success is by earning badges. In Nassau County, girls earned 31,730 badges and completed 3,643 Journey awards during 2019. Over 672 Juniors earned their Bronze Award, while 293 Cadettes earned their Silver Award, and 91 Seniors and Ambassadors completed their Gold Award, the highest recognition a Girl Scout can earn.

As we review our achievements for 2019, GSNC has truly moved into the future while making history for today.

We can’t wait to see what the next 100 years will bring to Girl Scouts of Nassau County. The future is now.

2019 was the inaugural year for GSNC’s Savannah Speedway, a council-wide race with gravity-driven wooden cars built and decorated by girls. 400 girls participated in 2019.
