ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
Hilltops Council acknowledges the Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal People as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live, work and create. We pay respect to Elders past and present and celebrate the continued connection of First Nations People to country, rivers, skies, knowledge and stories.
In all ways we strive to live in harmony, and practice Yindymarra Winhanganha –a Wiradjuri term that means “Respect and the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.”
Visitors are invited to reflect on this philosophy as they explore our region, taking the time to walk gently, notice deeply and celebrate the cultural richness that has shaped the Hilltops.

WELCOME TO HILLTOPS WIRADJURI AND NGUNNAWAL COUNTRY.

WELCOME TO THE HILLTOPS REGION
The Hilltops Region is a thriving, beautiful destination defined by orchards, vineyards, rolling hills and rich heritage. A place where farmgate produce meets award-winning wines, where history lives on in heritage towns and where every season paints the countryside in a new light.

Set within the Southern Tablelands of southeast NSW, the Hilltops Region is one of five Local Government Areas in this beautiful part of the state.
Here, you can savour cherries fresh from the orchard, enjoy boutique shopping, discover fine dining and unwind in charming country villages. Whether you’re exploring for a day or settling in for a week, the Hilltops offers something truly memorable.
Follow quiet country roads and depending on the season you’ll find orchards in blossom or trees full of ripe fruit, baby lambs soaking up some sun, cellar doors pouring cool-climate wines and villages where history lingers in stone walls and timber shopfronts. Every turn holds a story.
In Young, echoes of the gold rush invite you to pan for a glint of history. Boorowa celebrates its Irish roots in wool and music while blossoming into an open-air gallery of murals and installations. Harden–Murrumburrah honours the first Australian Light Horse, its silo art standing proud. Jugiong is a boutique riverside escape where country charm meets understated indulgence.
Slow down for a little while. Pick cherries straight from the tree, laugh with friends over a guinness stew at a local pub or sip a shiraz as the sun melts behind the hills. Wander a heritage trail where the past meets the present, picnic in one of our leafy parks, or maybe you’d like to settle into a café where the coffee is strong and the welcome even stronger.

CHERRIES + STONE FRUIT
Your reason to visit for a season.

Taste the Hilltops through its fresh produce. Markets and farmgate stalls overflow with cherries, stone fruit, cherry pies, fruit jams, homemade cherry ice cream, olives, honey and award-winning wines.
From early September, orchards burst into delicate pink and white blossom, transforming the region into a springtime wonderland, before giving way to juicy ripe fruit about six weeks later. Harvest time means picking cherries straight from the tree, joining orchard tours and stocking up at farmgate sheds. It’s a fleeting but unforgettable season, one that captures the Hilltops’ beauty, one that captures the beauty, abundance and warm country welcome of the Hilltops.
Luckily, the flavour doesn’t end with the season. All year round you can stock up on cherry and stone fruit delights such as jams, sauces, chutneys, cherry pies and even cherry wine. All available at local businesses and the Young Visitor Information Centre.

HILLTOPS WINE REGION
Sip into the season of ‘incredible produce, country charm and seriously great wine.’

Warm days, crisp nights and rich red soils create wines of depth and elegance. Vineyards here range from family-run plots to larger estates, each with its own story and signature style.
Harvest begins in late summer, usually February to March, when vines hang heavy and the air is scented with crushed grapes. Outside of grape harvest, cellar doors welcome guests all year-round for cool-climate shiraz, cabernet, riesling and vibrant rosé just to name a few.
Meet the makers, linger over tastings paired with local produce and discover wines that capture the patience, passion and character of this remarkable region.

DID YOU KNOW?
Co-op, or relax with a Devonshire Tea at the Old Courthouse. The surrounding countryside invites walks, picnics and discovery at every turn.
For those keen to explore further, the Shamrock Trail reveals Boorowa’s architecture and stories, while birdwatching trails showcase the natural beauty of the town and surrounding countryside – perfect by foot or by car. Maps and trail details are available at the Boorowa Museum, the Old Courthouse, or at any Hilltops Region Visitor Information Centre.

In 1892 the Boorowa News reported: “Messrs. Pearce Brothers sold 54/1 wool for 10½d per pound — the highest price that season ” That meant a 54-pound bale of topgrade wool, bringing what would equal several hundred dollars today — proof that Boorowa’s fine Merino has been prized for well over a century.

HARDEN-MURRUMBURRAH

In the heart of canola country, Harden and Murrumburrah sit side by side, surrounded in spring and summer by the golden fields and undulating grain. Together, the twin towns offer a fascinating mix of history, heritage and contemporary country life.
Murrumburrah is recognised as the birthplace of the Australian Lighthorse Regiment and its proud equestrian history is honoured at the Light Horse Memorial. Here you’ll also find the magnificent bronze statue of ‘Bill The Bastard’ one of Australia’s most famous warhorses, remembered for his courage and spirit during the First World War. Right beside this tribute is the majestic Silo Art Murals, which adds a bold splash of storytelling and creativity to the landscape.
INTERESTING FACT - 8 May 1863
The gold rush of the 1850s shaped the early days of the district, drawing miners, settlers and notorious bushrangers including Ben Hall, Frank Gardiner and Johnny Gilbert. Traces of this colourful past remain in the historic streetscapes, where striking architecture and heritage shopfronts tell stories of trade, farming and resilience.
Harden-Murrumburrah’s main streets are home to boutique shops, bakeries, cafés and welcoming pubs – the perfect spot to pause and soak up the atmosphere. Each October, the Harden Kite Festival transforms the racecourse with colour, music and fun – a celebration that reflects the lively, welcoming spirit of these proud twin towns.

“The Burrangong Star has been informed that Gardiner and Gilbert, in company with John O’Meally and Lowry, stuck up a store belonging to Mr. Barnes, and robbed it of about £100 worth of goods. They had pack-horses with them, which they loaded with the stolen property. They were well armed and mounted, Gardiner especially, who had a splendid horse.”
The Barnes Store is still open in Murrumburrah today.

Twin Town Charm
