New Endowed Scholarship in SEES - Issue 31

It is with great pleasure that we announce a new endowed scholarship for Geography students in SEES! The Derek and Donna Alderman Family Endowed Scholarship is a $1,000 award with the following purpose and eligibility criteria:

Purpose. The Donor’s first preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geoscience with a concentration in Human Geography. The second preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geoscience with a concentration in any area of Geography. The third preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Geography. The fourth preference is to provide scholarships to students minoring in Geography. The fifth preference is to provide scholarships to students taking geography courses.

Criteria. The recipient(s) may be freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level students and must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The scholarship may be awarded as a renewable scholarship and may be valid for 8 terms/4 years. The scholarship will be awarded by a committee consisting of the Office of Admissions and the College of Science and Mathematics in consultation with the Foundation.

Finally, although this is a new endowed scholarship we did have a recipient this academic year! MSAG student, Oluwaseun Ipede, received the award so be sure to congratulate Oluwaseun.

Dr. Derek Alderman is a 1990 graduate of Georgia Southern with a BA in History and Minor in Geography. He is currently a Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with specialties in cultural and historical geography; geographies of memory, race, tourism; politics of place naming and critical cartography. Be sure to announce this scholarship opportunity to your graduate and undergraduate students. Scholarships are generally advertised by the Foundation and open for applications October through the end of January. Scholarship applicants are reviewed and awards made usually by the end of February.
