Interim Director of the Lower School

From the Headmaster All across our nation, schools are beginning the new academic year. Some have even been open for a week or two. It is an exciting time, full of hope for children and the possibilities of a new beginning. As usual, we would not be ready to open our gates and doors without the efforts of our operations staff. Over the summer they did a significant amount of work on our campus. Each of the four main academic buildings (Cox, Conover, Hockenbury and Chapin) underwent renovations, repairs and cosmetic work. A new all-weather sport court was built by the tennis complex. The new Conger Alumni House was finished and finally, 15 months after moving out of The Cottage, the development team has a new home. All these projects help us to create a wonderful learning environment for all of our students. There are many events on the September calendar that bring together the school community or parts of it. Convocation,

Headmaster Sid Rowell.

Homecoming and back to school nights, among others, provide us with many opportunities to celebrate the school community. As always, I look forward to seeing you on campus at one of our many events. Warm regards, Sid Rowell

Student Body Will Benefit from Campus Developments Since June 5, staff members have been hard at work making substantial improvements to accommodate the 686 students—including 110 new enrollees—who will officially occupy Gill’s 79-acre campus this fall. These incoming and returning pupils, including seven new international students, encountered new buildings, beautiful sights and upgraded facilities on September 2. Improved landscaping now surrounds the Conger Alumni House, where the school’s six-member development team permanently relocated in late July. School Registrar and Data Systems Manager Eileen Procaccino—formerly The Conger Alumni House, home of the GSB development team. of the GSB Technology Department—has also found a new home on campus. This summer, renovations were made to the third floor of Hillard, where Procaccino will hold classes as well as Upper School yearbook meetings, and offer families assistance with online grades, transcripts and report cards. Visitors to the Chapin Math & Science Complex on opening day discovered exterior and interior improvements to the building. Outside, the Chapin courtyard has been beautifully adorned with new pathways and shrubbery. Inside, LED lighting fixtures have been installed, the girls’ and boys’ bathrooms have been remodeled and the media center has been converted into two separate classrooms. Near the varsity tennis courts, student-athletes found an outdoor sport court built this past summer for volleyball, basketball and more. “It provides another opportunity for us to get our P.E. classes outside when the weather permits,” said Director of Athletics David Pasquale. “The sport court will only enhance our students’ athletic experience.”

Other facility upgrades made to benefit the entire student body this school year include the: • Installation of new bath partitions in the Cox Lower School;

• Re-upholstering of furniture in the Hockenbury Student Center;

• Renovation of Hillard bathrooms;

• Refinishing of the wooden floors in Gill’s Founders and Evans Hall dining areas;

• Application of fresh paint to Gill’s Lower, Middle and Upper School classrooms; • Reconstruction of the Conover fire escape;

• Renovation of the Founders Hall dining room exit doors.

During the first several weeks of school, the dedicated pathway outside of the Chapel will also be replaced with more durable brick pavers.

Year Ahead Promises New Goals, Friends and Opportunities Nearly 700 Upper, Middle and Lower School students attended orientations on August 27 and 28, where they received an advanced look at the new places, new faces and new routines they can anticipate this year. GSB’s administrators expressed their expectations of students and their parents throughout the two-day orientation, which was held in various locations campus-wide. From Brueckner Hall on August 27, Upper School Director Sue Petrone addressed Gill’s new students and rising freshmen. “You have all been chosen to be a part of the Upper School community for a reason and I thank you in advance for what you will bring to the school this year.” Petrone said. “The Upper School group is filled with creative writers, dancers, horseback riders and future varsity athletes. Some of you will entertain us on the stage and others will be leaders of student government. I hope that you will take the opportunity to become a vibrant part of the Upper School tapestry.” Already, rising freshman Jessica Abowitz has set high standards for herself. “I’m looking forward to fencing in the winter, and trying out for the Chamber Choir and GSB Players,” she said. “There are a lot of new kids this year, but I don’t have any worries. The upperclassmen are really nice.”

From top: Incoming ninth grader, Casey Rojek, attends new student registration with his father, Jeffrey P ’18; Rising fifth grade classmates William Stamato, Zachary Weiss and Isha Vemuri practice opening their new lockers.

More than 30 senior-volunteers returned to campus a day early to help tour Gill’s newest Upper School students. Through their help, students learned the location of their classrooms, introduced themselves to their teachers, discovered new friends and discussed their goals for the year ahead.

Despite their age differences, both Alex Schachne ’18 and Andrew Wible ’15 shared similar missions: to find the perfect college through Gill. “I believe the curriculum, combined with athletics, will give me the best opportunity for college,” said Schachne, an incoming freshman from Summit Middle School. “Gill is a chance to start over and become friends with new people through different clubs and extracurricular activities.”

Hi-Hills Day Camp Provides Best Summer Ever at Gill St. Bernard’s School Hi-Hills Day Camp began with two weeks of Summer Fun in June followed by eight weeks of traditional day camp. One hundred and twenty smiling campers—ages three through 15—learned new activities, participated in fun events and forged lifelong friendships along the way. Aside from daily activities and enrichment programs, several special events proved camp favorites throughout the summer. From Carnival and upper bunk campouts to the Kinder Camp Garden Party and camper-versus-counselor games, each child found something new and exciting to love. Campers took on daunting challenges like the trust fall at the low ropes course and hitting moving targets at archery, while others performed Cinderella and Hi-Hills on Broadway with the drama club on stage. No matter what activity they participated in, the #BeBetter Movement encouraged all campers to reach their utmost potential by awarding points for positive attitudes and extra assistance. “The #BeBetter Movement contributed to the philosophy of Hi-Hills by encouraging self-awareness, confidence and Gill St. Bernard’s School • St. Bernard’s Road • Gladstone, NJ 07934

camaraderie amongst campers and staff alike,” said Director of Summer and Auxiliary Programs Cindy Wyatt. “This has been, without a doubt, the best summer ever.” Hi-Hills also hosted friends and family throughout the summer. Parent luncheons Kinder camper Logan smiles wide as he slides down the permitted campers to introduce Wild Rapids water slide during their parents to new friends Carnival in week five of Hi-Hills. made on Gill’s 79-acre campus and Bring Your Friend to Camp Day allowed non-campers to experience daily bunk activities as well as discover all that Hi-Hills has to offer. A spirited theme tied each week to its corresponding activities to create a truly unique experience. Art Explosion Week featured lessons from guest Ted Michalowski, a courtroom sketch artist who demonstrated his drawing speed sketching campers during a mock trial.

FACULTY NEWS Cosentino to Apply Lessons Learned in STEM Fellowship Program Middle School science teacher Teri Cosentino will return to the GSB classroom a star this fall. In June, she spent two weeks participating in the Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs) program with 19 other educators from across the country. A part of the Siemens Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academy, the elite fellowship allowed teachers to collaborate with top research scientists to synthesize a sustainable source for lithium ion batteries. Through research and seminars held at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Cosentino learned new and exciting tools she hopes will expose (L. to r.) Oak Ridge Associated Universities Science Education Programs Group her students to the wonders of STEM. “When I return to the classroom, I plan on Manager Marie Westfall, Discovery Communications Vice President of incorporating what I learned and experienced at the ORNL in a variety of venues,” Corporate Education Partnerships and Cosentino told Kiesha Boykins, a program specialist with the Siemens Foundation. Implementation Mary Rollins, GSB teacher Teri Cosentino and Siemens Foundation “The activities will be focused on self-awareness, discovery and growth—connecting President Jeniffer Harper-Taylor. what students learn to how they live. I want to foster in my students what I felt as I worked with the scientists…the excitement of being on the forefront of innovation so that they too, can become a community of diverse, free-thinkers in a local place, but with a worldwide view.” Using a grant she received from the STARs program, Cosentino purchased littleBits, programmable snap-together circuits, for students to use during the 2014-15 school year. “I plan on setting up a program so that my Middle School students can do research in scientific discovery, technological innovations and engineering design, incorporating the principles of sustainability, critical materials, electricity and batteries in a new way,” Cosentino said. Janas Visits the Supreme Court Interim History Department Chair Leo Janas joined 20 other educators nationwide in Washington, D.C. this past June to participate in the Federal Trials and Great Debates Summer Institute. The ninth annual program, co-sponsored by the American Bar Association (ABA) and Federal Judicial Center (FJC), is aimed at enhancing the knowledge and understanding of teachers of U.S. history, government, civics and law. During the workshop, Janas met with leading historians, federal judges and curriculum consultants for an in-depth view of several federal court cases that never reached the Supreme Court but are still quite significant. These included the Sedition Trials of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Vietnam-era Pentagon Papers Case and more. Janas also visited the Supreme Court, met Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg, attended a federal court proceeding and participated in a question-and-answer session with a U.S. District Court judge.

Leo Janas (back right) joins 20 other educators from across the nation while attending the ninth annual Federal Trials and Great Debates Summer Institute in Washington, D.C.

“The institute was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the judicial branch, to explore new ways to teach students about our court system and to meet some of the people who make it work every day,” said Janas. “The cases we covered occurred at several critical periods in U.S. history—the early Republic, the 1920s and the Vietnam Era. I plan to use the teaching strategies and other materials from the institute to discuss these cases as a window into the important events of these periods; these cases also provide a framework for exploring American law and the Constitution. The ABA and FJC made it a great experience from start to finish and I would recommend the institute to any teacher who includes a study of the law and courts in his or her courses.”

STUDENT LIFE RECAP Lower School Families Enjoy the Fruits of their Labor Fruits and vegetables weren’t the only living things maturing in the GSB garden this summer. Each week, faculty members met with Lower School families to broaden their minds—and appetites—while participating in the first-ever Garden Growers Group. With tools in hand and galoshes on foot, the Garden Growers spent three hours every Thursday morning planting, weeding and harvesting a wide assortment of goods. Lower School science teacher Lynn Prosen established the organization with the goal of transforming Gill’s bountiful garden of potatoes, eggplant, peppers and more into a place where families could gather, learn and grow. “It’s the perfect place to learn about lifecycles, insects, food and food preservation,” said Prosen, who ventured past the brook and to the garden throughout the 2013-14 school year to harvest plants of different families with her students. “I’m so glad that the children involved were able to see the type of growth and changes from week to week and to reap the fresh produce in the end. The program truly shed light on the importance of caring for the environment.” After selecting all desired items from the batch, the Garden Growers Group donated the remaining produce to the GSB dining hall for lunch throughout the summer. Prosen also plans to dehydrate, freeze, can, pickle and ferment any other unused foods as a means of teaching preservation methods to students during the 2014-15 academic year.

Jamison Wright ’23 spends some time with the Garden Growers Group.

While the GSB garden is still active, all Lower School families are invited to join the Garden Growers Group after school each Thursday from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. this fall. Parental supervision is required.

ATHLETICS Varsity Boys’ Soccer Players Garner Offseason Success It should come as no surprise that Gill’s varsity boys’ soccer program earned a preseason ranking of No. 7 in the state. One need only look at the boys’ offseason success to see that the fall of 2014 holds much promise for the Knights. From July 18 until July 21, seven GSB sophomores—Maxwell Aunger, Steven Bednarsky, Kevin Brito, Andres Gonzalez, Cameron Miller, Armeen Mozaffari and Anes Mrkulic— traveled to the National Cup XIII Finals in Greensboro, N.C. The boys played for the Stronghold SC Falcons while competing alongside more than 100 U-13 through U-17 club boys’ and girls’ soccer teams from 18 different states. An underdog in the U.S. Club Soccer’s cup-based championship series, the Falcons powered past five teams to become one of 19 national champions. A participant in the U-15 Super Group, the boys defeated New York’s Thunder ’98 soccer team 2-1 in the final on a winning goal by Brito. Gill St. Bernard’s also made a name for itself in China this past summer, where Aunger, Bednarsky and John “Jack” Lowe ’15 played for the New Jersey All-Stars—the first U.S. team ever to compete in the Beijing Cup. A total of 16 teams took part in the event, as GSB joined ranks with other talented players from throughout the state to place third overall in the fourth annual tournament.
