GEORGESTEVENSACADEMY REPORTONPHILANTHROPY2024-2025

George Stevens Academy was founded in 1852 through an act of philanthropy when Bluehill shipbuilder George Stevens left his “homestead and appurtenances,” along with generous funds, to establish a town academy. George had no children of his own, but he understood that a versatile, useful education for the young people of this peninsula would help nurture a thriving and successful community. In the language ofhiswill, thegoalwastobuild“anAcademyforthepurposesofeducationforever.”
ItstartedwithagiftfromGeorge.Theschoolheenvisionedopenedin1898andfor127yearshasinspired the generosity of countless others. In this report, we recognize and celebrate the past fiscal year of philanthropicgivingtoGeorgeStevensAcademy.

REPORTONPHILANTHROPY2024-2025

FromChristopherYoung’85,FinanceCommitteeChair

Data is from the FY25 Audit Financial Statement
GSA’s FY24 financial improvements continued through FY25 with another positive operating surplus. Prudent financial management and maximizing the value of every dollar helped the school maintain programs and enhance our students’ learning experiences.
Some of the many highlights from the past year:
(1) Real Estate Management
GSA continues to prioritize using its resources to support educational programming and took action to streamline real estate holdings to better align with the school’s operations. In FY25 we had two properties that were no longer used for their original purposes and were actively marketed for sale, with closings scheduled for Q1 FY26. These sales will result in a reduction in expenses with proceeds being appropriated to meet the school’s requirements.
(2) Campus Improvements
The campus saw a refresh of some high-traffic areas, with new flooring, paint, ceiling tiles, and high-efficiency LED lights occurring over the summer break. Updates to the fire protection system and intercom were also completed. Our goal is to use operational funds wisely to create an environment that is welcoming and useful for our students and staff.

Celebration of Giving
REPORTONPHILANTHROPY2024-2025

FromDanWelch,Head of School

As I reflect on this Celebration of Giving, I am reminded not only of the remarkable generosity of our communities, but of the enduring trust you place in this institution to prepare the students of today for the future of tomorrow. That mission drives everything we do, and it inspires us to hold ourselves to ever-higher standards of excellence, care, and impact.
Over the past year, your gifts, both large and small, have impacted our campus every day. Whether it’s updated lab equipment that deepens scientific inquiry, new audio production tools that help students synthesize new music, or maintenance projects that begin an overarching aim to improve our facilities, your gifts mean educational experiences and opportunities to excel for the young people of this peninsula.
Just a few of the highlights we’ve achieved together includes:
Thanks to early gifts to the Gateway Campaign, we have begun essential pre-work (plumbing upgrades, mechanical system routing, site preparation), putting us in a strong position to enter future phases of the project. Our Annual Fund continued with another strong year, enabling us to sustain core educational programs, preserve optimum student-to-teacher ratios, and provide exciting enrichment opportunities for our students. Volunteer engagement is strong through initiatives like our community service fair, which has become an annual event, the Duane B. Gray ’64 Memorial Golf Tournament, the Andy Collier ’98 Memorial Golf Tournament, as well as the Downeast Art & Antiques Show.

Celebration of Giving
REPORTONPHILANTHROPY2024-2025

FromDanWelch,Head of School

I’m excited by not just what has happened this past year, but also by what lies ahead.
Our next chapter calls us to re-imagine how GSA can be ever more central to our communities and responsive to the world our students will inhabit. The Gateway Project is not just about new walls and entrances; it’s about shaping the environment that our students interact with every day. It is about the beginning of a revitalized campus, one that is conducive to learning and one that instills our constituents with pride. With your continued partnership, we will create spaces that elevate learning, promote collaboration, and welcome all who enter.
Your role in this story is vital for the long-term success of our school. Whether you share your time, talents, or resources, all of it matters and all of it is appreciated. I invite you to stay close to the school, ask questions, visit our campus, and consider how you might engage in this journey alongside us.
I thank you for believing in our students, in this community, and in the promise of what GSA is now and what it will be for future generations. Together, we will continue building on the legacy and traditions of GSA and ensure that this Academy remains a place where purpose, possibility, and community come together.

CoachBillGray’83BaseballFieldDedication
On April 30, 2025, before a home baseball game against Sumner, we named our field the Bill Gray ’83 Baseball Field in recognition of Coach Gray’s long-standing service and tireless commitment to George Stevens Academy and our students. There was an impressive turnout for the dedication.
As part of the field dedication, we raised more than $19,000 which allowed us to purchase a new scoreboard and signage. Funds over and above those needed for the scoreboard will establish an endowed fund, also named for Coach Gray, for field upkeep. Thank you to everyone for attending, donating, and for your support.

$89,673!
Giving Day 2025, held on June 3, was a huge success thanks to our amazing community of alumni, parents (past, present, and future), trustees, faculty and staff, students, family members, and friends! With the support of 250 donors, we raised more than $89,000 in donations and matching funds for the GSA Annual Fund.
Thank you to everyone who visited us on campus, gave online, mailed in gifts, and shared in our fundraising efforts to help us exceed our goal on Giving Day!

GSA Class of 2015
On August 2nd, 10 members of the GSA Class of ’15 gathered with their families to celebrate their 10-year reunion! Curtis Cove delivered a picturesque sunset and was the perfect backdrop for reflecting on the last decade. Alumni Emmaline Richardson, Tate Yoder, Timmy Dentino, and Katama Murray organized the event. Cheers to everyone near and far - get ready for 2035!

Julianna Smith Hanlon ’09
Julianna was recently named one of 40 under 40 in the Boston Business Journal. She has also been appointed to the board of the Institute for Educational Advancement and selected for the Boston Bar Association’s Public Interest Leader Program!
She currently resides in Boston with her husband and daughter. She works as Senior Legal Counsel for Mass General Brigham, a hospital system including Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is also managing counsel for Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
“GSA absolutely helped me on my career and life path in that there was a lot of staff and faculty support for pursuing our interests. GSA allowed us to found clubs and academic groups that aligned with our interests and supported those endeavors. Accordingly, I was able to found a politics club during my time there as well as re-establish the cheerleading squad. Having concrete institutional support for our goals and allowing us the necessary funding and support to really establish workable programs instilled a great sense of confidence not only in myself but in systems. It taught me to ask for what I believed in, and also taught me how to work with others in an effort to make use of somewhat limited resources to get things done. GSA really allowed us, as students, to advocate for ourselves and be creative in generating and making the best use of resources. That is the backbone of the skills I developed to excel in my practice as an attorney.”
Words of Advice from Lawrence “Larry” Merrill ’62
“I was, without doubt, the worst player on the JV basketball team, which won 2 games and lost the rest, when I came to GSA in 1958. I scored 3 points all season. On the track team when I was a junior, I placed dead last in both the one-mile and two-mile races at the County track meet. Now at age 81, I recently set the course Age Group record for the 10-mile Tour du Lac race around Silver Lake in Bucksport. I'm currently leading my Age Group in the Sub 5 race series, and I plan to do the MDI marathon as a relay and probably the Millinocket Half Marathon in December.
“So, tell the current non-athletes there is hope. All they have to do is survive those who used to beat them, and keep on doing it.”
Great job, Julianna and Larry!

The 2025 Downeast Art & Antiques Show kicked off with a festive preview party on Wednesday, August 13, and ran through Saturday, August 16. The show featured offerings from 30 national and international dealers.
We extend special thanks to show director, Laura Carrigan, for her tireless efforts to bring this magnificent event to the community, and to the dealers for providing superb art and antiques for sale. Thank you to those who attended the preview party, show, and talks. Your participation brought in over $37,900 in support of our students! And last, but not least, thank you to the wonderful GSA volunteers and staff who support this event in so many ways.

FacilitiesUpgrades

In the summer of 2025, we were able to complete two major campus improvement projects. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we refinished our gymnasium floor, which involved sanding the floor to bare wood, finishing the floor with a sealer and Gymshoe hardening finish. Permanent lines for volleyball were added, as were lines for side hoops, allowing for simultaneous games during tournaments. Thanks to many generous donors, we exceeded our GSA Annual Fund goal by $20,000 in FY25. The additional dollars were allocated to help us install new flooring in the cafeteria, lobby, and bathrooms, as well as new hanging ceilings and LED lighting fixtures.
