Battle of Largs

The Beginning of the End of Norse Power in Scotland The battle of Largs was the outcome of Norwegian occupation of areas of Scotland and the Scottish response to this.

Norway had ruled the Hebridean Islands and western shores of Scotland since the 12th century. In the intervening years many people living here switched allegiances and identities. Many began speaking Norse. By the 13th century the Scots forces had grown stronger. They felt capable of taking on the Viking settlers and wished to return the regions to Scottish rule.

At first, they attempted to haggle for the lands, but this was rebuked, so they decided to take them by force. The Norwegian Account of King Haakon’s Expedition Against Scotland recounts that the Scots began raids into these Norse-speaking areas burning villages and churches and killing men, women and children. (Although this account may well be bias in favour of Norway, we know atrocities are often committed by both sides, whether we want to acknowledge this or not!) This act of terrible violence was one that the King Haakon of Norway could not overlook.

Late in the summer of 1263, with King Haakon at the helm and on his command, 120 ships containing over 20, 000 men sailed up the Firth of Clyde dropping anchor off the coast of Arran. It must have been Detail from Battle of Largs by William Hole, 1899 an awe-inspiring and terrifying site to behold. The huge flotilla sat there, waiting to attack. In terms of invasion forces, this was one of the largest ever to threaten the British mainland and the Scots’ strength at sea was puny in comparison.

However, what they lacked in sea-power they made up with in ‘wily ways’. The Scottish king, Alexander the III, cleverly sent over envoys to delay proceedings hoping that the reliably bad Scottish weather might intervene.

On October the 1st he was to be rewarded by a huge storm which scattered the ships, forcing many aground at Largs. King Haakon and 1,000 of his men came ashore the next day to salvage what they could. The Scottish army took their chance and attacked. Haakon managed to scramble back to his longboat, the battle was fierce and bloody, both sides took heavy loses; both sides claimed victory, but no one knows who really won the battle of Largs that day. However, it changed the course of history.

The Norwegian king, and remaining Viking soldiers, returned to Orkney for winter intending to return to Largs the following year to finish what they had started. However, by then they King was 60 years old – elderly for the time, and he died that December. Luckily for Scotland, Magnus the Lawmender, Haakon’s son, had no wish to continue to fight. In 1266 he signed the Treaty of Perth which saw The Hebrides and territories returned to Scotland for the sum of 4,000 silver marks plus an annual dividend. This treaty also recognised Shetland and Orkney as coming under Norwegian rule. Had the battle in Largs gone differently, we may all be speaking Norwegian today !

The Norwegian influence on our culture can be seen scattered throughout our language. Words such as bairn from Old Norse ‘barn’ – meaning child, kirk from Old Norse ‘kirkja’ – meaning church, muck from Old Norse ‘myk’ – meaning manure, and kilt from Old Norse ‘kjalta’ – meaning ‘to fold’.

SK Fitness Charity Event This year SK Fitness - Simply Keep Fit @ The Castle, held their annual charity event in aid of The Beatson Cancer Charity. This charity is close to their hearts with family, friends and clients who have all needed The Beatson over the last year.

Suzanne, Chloe and Tina cycled for a combined 24 hours from 8am 18th Aug until 8am 19th Aug, not only that, every hour on the hour they delivered a spin class for clients, family, friends and community!

Ranfurly Castle Golf Club worked along with SK Fitness with hosting a bake sale and helping sell raffle tickets and even put on a special healthy brunch menu!

The event was brilliant fun and the team managed to fill 110 spaces throughout the 24 hours. Everyone who came along had a fantastic time with great music, disco lights, and brilliant classes.

Organisation Changes At the start of the new Rotary year in July, West of Scotland Rotary, which includes Gryffe Valley Rotary Club, joined forces with clubs in the East of Scotland to form the new South of Scotland District 1320. The new district covers the area roughly south of a line drawn between the Clyde and the Forth, although on the west coast it includes clubs as far north as Oban and Lochaber then down through Ayrshire to Stranraer. It is a large and diverse area including Scotland’s two largest cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as many smaller rural communities along the East coast, down to the Borders and across to Dumfries and Galloway.

There are over 90 Rotary Clubs in this new district, demonstrating the vibrancy of the Rotary movement in Scotland. The Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley is one of eight clubs in the South Clyde Area, which covers Renfrewshire and Inverclyde.

Club members, who come from many different walks of life, live and work in the towns and villages of the Gryffe Valley, primarily Bridge of Weir, Kilmacolm, Houston, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch. Members give their time to participating in, and giving support to, local community groups and activities, as well as raising funds for worldwide causes.

The Whirlybird is a funny, playful and uplifting show featuring movement, music, birdsong and puppetry and lots of things that spin!

Set in a cosy nest, two birds look skyward and get ready for their maiden flight. While flying comes easy for Bird, Whirlybird just can’t get the hang of it. After many failed attempts, inspiration is found in a very special flying seed…

The Whirlybird is about learning to fly, encouraging one another and finding joy and inspiration in nature. Last year, Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley raised over £17,000 in various fund raising events, and made financial donations to organisations such as CHAS, Renfrewshire Young Carers, End Polio Now, Shelterbox and Ukraine generators. Doors Open Days Renfrewshire Scotland’s annual Doors Open Days festival gives you free access to lots of fascinating buildings across Renfrewshire! This year’s event will be held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd September.

It’s a great chance to explore hidden gems and fascinating venues.

You’ll learn so much about the history and heritage of Renfrewshire.

Each year is different, and the buildings taking part each put on their own activities as part of the celebrations. Doors Open Days is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days alongside Scottish Archaeology Month, co-ordinated by Archaeology Scotland. Both are supported by Historic Environment Scotland.

This year’s shared European Heritage Days theme is Living Heritage.

Iain Colvin’s book, The King’s Prerogative, is a crime thriller that uses as its backdrop the true tale of how leading Nazi Rudolf Hess flew to Scotland in May 1941. At a recent event hosted by The Ginger Cat bookshop to promote the novel, Iain discovered that although the events in his book stretch back more than 80 years, they still invoke strong memories for some local residents.

Our Local Development Plan is reviewed and renewed every four years. This plan guides all our planning decisions and includes what can and can’t be allowed in our greenbelt. Representing an area with a very large greenbelt and rural area I know the importance of this, especially to preserve our environment and to reduce inappropriate uses.

The council completed it’s initial four months consultation on Local Development Plan 3 in August. I urge everyone with an interest in the development of our local Planning policies to get engaged with the process to ensure we have local plans that reflect our priorities. Get involved in preparing the new Local Development Plan - https://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk Planning applications can come in specifically for development in our Greenbelt. For us these can raise a number of significant issues. For instance, they could spread housing all over the greenbelt if unchecked, setting a precedent for others to do likewise, without consideration on the impact on our infrastructure. Certain activities can be supported in the greenbelt such as tourism, leisure, some other limited uses and conversion of existing buildings.

The council operates all of its local development plan to manage and hopefully protect our rural environment from inappropriate uses. Importantly minimising the loss of valuable agricultural land and fending off housing developers, who would without any control, bulldoze their way through our greenbelt. The plan is an important tool in managing development. The vast majority are approved as they comply with policies. For some, changes may be made to improve the application and at other times where they can’t meet the policies and are rejected.

As a local Councillor you can be assured that I take my role seriously and check every application that comes through. My duty is to scrutinise every planning application that comes in and if necessary, offer a local opinion and at times objections based on planning grounds. We want to leave our environment in the best shape for our children and future generations and it needs us to speak up for it and defend it when required.

Junior Choir restarting

Do you like singing and learning about making music? St Machar’s Ranfurly Church Junior Choir is restarting Thursday 31st August at 4.15pm in our hall.

It’s for children in P3 - P7 and everyone is welcome. The choir is free. We have a rehearsal every Thursday during term time and at the end of each term a mini-performance after our practice for parents/carers etc. We take part in some special events and services in the church. Residents of Kilmacolm Road, BoW must be disappointed after submitting a petition to the council. Vehicle speeds recorded were high enough for action to be agreed, but still no re-design of the traffic calming at the gateway to the village, and the speed camera? I understand that a mobile camera was deployed on Kilmacolm Road, but I haven’t seen it myself yet, which I find rather disappointing.

The Clyde Coastal Path and Langbank CC are planning to extend the cycle path from Parklea along the shore, crossing the A8 with a footbridge to Main Road. I am happy to say that I support their cause and regularly attend these meetings. The group is applying to Sustrans for project funding, which ticks much of the criteria.

What to Expect when visiting an Osteopath

Before you come to our clinic you may have questions you would like to ask, such as what to wear or what treatment involves. All our practitioners have recognised qualifications and registered with the appropriate governing bodies, ensuring that you can trust in their ability to treat you safely and effectively.

When you arrive at our clinic, our friendly receptionist will welcome you and deal with any initial administration or questions you may have.

Your practitioner will spend 1 hour with you on your first appointment. They will take a full medical history of both your current symptoms and any medication you are taking. Sometimes it can help if you write down this information before you come so you can recall it more easily. This is recorded confidentially and will help determine the type of examinations your practitioner will undertake.

Once your practitioner has reviewed their initial thoughts with you, with your consent, they will undertake a thorough examination, asking you to perform movements and activities to observe your posture and mobility. To help us with this it is recommended that you wear loose fitting clothing you feel comfortable in, or, gym type clothing such as shorts, leggings and T-shirts. You may be asked to partially undress if necessary.

We will discuss treatment goals and expectations with you. We will explain what we think treatment should be able to achieve, and agree with you a treatment plan, including the likely number of sessions needed for improvement in how you feel.

Typically, you can expect to be seen weekly. The Osteopath will be able to quickly assess whether you are responding to treatment and how many further appointments you may need. On average patients typically have 3 to 4 sessions to resolve their problems, but at times they may need more or fewer.

Treatment is normally hands-on and involves skilled manipulation of the spine and joints, and massage of soft tissues. Sometimes acupuncture and low - level laser therapy may be recommended.

Your practitioner will explain what they are doing throughout the process, will explain any treatment risk and always gain consent for treatment on an ongoing basis.

We give online videos of exercises and stretches for every patient to make sure you get the most out of your appointments and to empower you to help you manage your problem, so you are not dependent on treatment.

12th Erskine Walk of Hope for Scottish Huntington’s Association Margaret Moncrieff and friends will again do a sponsored Walk of Hope along the banks of the Clyde in Erskine in aid of Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA). It will take place this year on Saturday 16th September at 11am from the Riverside car park - please join us. As the walk was designed to suit people with HD, the aim is to walk as much or as little as you wish.

As you may know, Huntington’s disease (HD) is a devastating neurological condition which renders the sufferer increasingly dependent on care over the course of 15 to 25 years. In many cases this care is provided at home by the immediate family. The condition has been described as a combination of motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s and elements of Alzheimer’s. Sadly, it is genetic and every child of a person with the condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. There are now real hopes of a treatment, but it will be many years before these drugs are available. In the meantime, families and children who are affected by HD will continue to need the support of SHA. We seek to raise funds for SHA to enable them to continue to provide a comprehensive support and advisory service to families who are affected by HD. We also deliver gifts of house plants and shortbread to members of our community who are ill, lonely, bereaved or housebound.

Massive congratulations and a big thank you to the Bee Happy Litter Crew who have now donated over £5,000 of essential items to our Foodbank Collection Point since September 2021. Many thanks to Langbank Parish Church too, who brought along a large carload of items recently.

We are very excited about hosting our own Doors Open Day event, when anyone can come along and discover the fascinating history of our lovely church.

There’s even a short film which brings its story to life and members of Houston & Crosslee Historical Society will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Margaret Moncrieff will undertake her annual Erskine Walk of Hope, in aid of Scottish Huntington’s Association, on 16th September and we wish her lots of luck.

Community Council election process gets underway in Renfrewshire Local people in Renfrewshire are being encouraged to use their voice and become a community councillor as the nomination period opens. Elections must be held every four years to elect members to the area’s community councils, with the last elections taking place in 2019.

Nominations for the 2023 election opened on 14th August and residents must declare their candidacy by no later than 15th September 2023.

Current community councillors are eligible to stand for re-election and must declare their candidacy by returning a nomination form before the closing date. If a community council receives more nominations than there are places, then a ballot election will be held in the local area. If there are not enough nominations, then the community council will not re-establish and a further call out for nominations will take place – with anything in between meaning the candidates will be elected unopposed.

Nomination forms must be filled out fully, include a proposer and seconder who are residents of the area and are listed on the Voters’ Roll, and be signed in ink by all parties.

2023 is the 20th anniversary of Lochwinnoch Arts Festival. I will soon be submitting a motion to Council recognising the dedication of all the volunteers who make this fabulous festival possible.

In particular, acknowledging Morag Thow. ‘Mo’ is a force of nature, who, along with her wonderful team of volunteers at Lochwinnoch Arts Festival, promotes the best of Scotland’s abundant cultural talent. I’ve enjoyed many an evening at Lochwinnoch Arts Festival long may they continue. Thank you to everyone involved.

The Steeple Hall, Kilbarchan is the most beloved building in the village. Sadly, for decades it has been neglected by Renfrewshire Council. As a result, it lies unused and the cost to restore it increases year on year. I believe it can have a new life, its strength lies in its iconic status, and being at the centre of the conservation area. All Ward Councillors must bring what we can to the table and work as one to ensure that the Steeple Hall is restored to its former glory. Last year I identified two potential heritage funders, I’ve also met with Paisley Museum and had positive discussions about its textile collection being brought to Kilbarchan. With Kilbarchan Community Council and ward Councillors I’m meeting with council officers to develop funding bids focused on the Steeple and a ‘cultural quarter’ around the Cross and the Weavers Cottage.

All of us have concerns about the traffic and speeding in our villages. The Rural Safe Walking Initiative commissioned last year, has enabled residents in Kilbarchan and Howwood to identify the worst areas in their village for speeding, dangerous junctions and pedestrians. I’m pleased that the commissioned company SWECO has made recommendations based upon these results and these have recently been released with work to start this year, with two more years of initiatives to follow, dependent upon the council’s budget constraints. Recommendations for Lochwinnoch will follow soon.

There is a growing movement nationally to control seagulls because of their anti-social behaviour and constant pecking at any source of food.

Scottish Water are installing a top-up-water tap in the village. I asked for one for Quarriers Village, but was told this was unlikely as there was a list of some 1,500 requests already waiting.

There are three potential applications being considered for battery storage plants in Inverclyde. These can be used to store renewable energy when there is a surplus.

There is scoping being conducted in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park for windfarms.

The new Greenock Ocean Terminal was officially opened

by Scottish Office Minister, Lord Offord. The new jetty will allow some 105 cruise ships to dock this year bringing 150,000 passengers to Greenock. The cost- was £21m, invested by the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

Due to Scottish Government cuts, we reduced our potholing teams from 3 to 2. We now have some 452 potholes waiting to be filled. I am arguing that we should return to 3 teams for 2024/25.

Kilmacolm Civic Trust In 2007 David Roe,in conjunction with Kilmacolm and Quarriers Civic Trust, published a two hundred page illustrated book on the history of Kilmacolm.

The Trust still holds copies of this book, available at the 2007price of £10.99. Please contact the Civic Trust archivist on archivist@kilmacolmcivictrust.org if you wish to purchase a copy.

Many of the illustrations used in this book are from those held in the Civic Trust archive. The collection holds over seven hundred old postcards, photographs and pictures of Kilmacolm and Quarriers. All have been digitised and are available to the public on the Civic Trust website kilmacolmcivictrust.org.

Go to ‘About Kilmacolm’ then ‘search our archive’. Type in ‘Postcards’ in the top box and then tick ‘show contents’ of each ring binder.

The pictures range from early thatched cottages up until the 1980’s showing the village as it was at that time. The names of specific buildings can also be typed in.

Bridge of Weir Choral Society - New Season Rehearsals resume for autumn on Wednesday September 6th at 7pm in the Kidston Hall Kilmacolm, where preparations will start for our 75th season.

In August former Kilmacolm and Quarriers Village Councillor Jim Macleod passed away. He was Ward 1 councillor from 2007-2017, moving to Ward 2 when the ward boundaries changed.

When I was elected in 2017, I received many comments from constituents on how much he was appreciated which I passed on to him at the time. I realised very quickly that I had big shoes to fill! He was a great friend and colleague to me and he will be sorely missed.

ward 1 cllr Stephen Mccabe I was saddened to hear of the passing of former Councillor Jim MacLeod on 13th August. Jim represented the old Ward 1, which included Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village, between 2007 and 2017. Jim was a very hardworking Councillor as well as long-time community activist. My deepest condolences go to his wife Sylvia and their family.

The pavement upgrading works in Kilmacolm village centre are now complete. Generally, the reaction has been very positive. I have received a complaint that the scheme has been a waste of money at a time of pressure on the public finances. As I reported before, most of the money came from a Scottish Government grant that is targeted at improvements to town and village centres, so if the money wasn’t spent in Kilmacolm it would have been spent elsewhere.

The Council consultation on the potential disposal of land at the Wateryetts Drive roundabout to the developer of the proposed housing development at West of Quarry Drive started on 21st August and closes on 17th October. Details can be found on the Council’s website www.inverclyde.gov.uk/wateryettsdrive.

The development of the Council’s budget for the next two financial years is underway. We are facing a revenue budget gap of around £13m that will need to be closed by a combination of cuts to services and increases in Council Tax unless we receive a much improved settlement from the Scottish Government. We won’t know our settlement until December so any proposals for savings and Council Tax rises will be the subject of public consultation early in the new year.

At the time of writing, the Post Office are unable to confirm a date for the re-opening of the Kilmacolm Branch. The required works to the shop have still to be completed.

SEPTEMBER SONG As the old song neatly put it: it seems a long, long time from May to September!

But for us it seems such a short time since we planted the summer flowers in the village tubs and baskets, yet here we are, officially in Autumn.

The uncommon weather during the summer months made it a bit of a roller coaster ride, but the plants appear to have thrived on the unpredictability of it all.

One of the bonuses for us was that the frequent rain earlier on meant we didn’t have to do as much watering this year. That’s usually one of the biggest tasks for us. The hot, humid weather that followed created perfect growing conditions, which led to a pleasing display.

The month of August started with a lucky four of our group heading off to Chamonix for a 10 day walking holiday through some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. Despite significant snow cover, they were disappointed to see the obvious reduction in the glaciers since the last visit, but enjoyed their encounters with Ibex, chamois and Marmots along the trails. While they were on their travels the rest of us had to adapt our outings to suit the vagaries of the ‘summer’ weather, meaning we settled for a walk to the Knoc above Largs, then the next scheduled outing was postponed, but we did meet up and walked from Kilmacolm via Glen Moss and Killellan Road to Houston - at least it was a leg stretcher!

Monday 14th August and a welcome break in the weather saw 12 of us taking the previously postponed walk from the Drovers Inn, Inverarnan, down the east side of Loch Lomond to Ardleish. On the return some of us were foolish enough to fight our way through five foot high bracken and rough swamp grass to climb the mound of Cnap Mòr to be rewarded with fine views south down the length of Loch Lomond. A fine warm summers day rounded off with well deserved refreshments at the Drovers Inn.

Back in 2018, Renfrewshire Council created a ‘biodiversity policy’ to try to counter the threat to wildlife and pollinating insects, much of which is due to habitat loss. We thought we’d do our bit and we planted some wildflower seeds in the spare ground at Maxwell Place, behind the Co-op. It was coming on very well and a promising wee ‘wildflower meadow’ was developing.

Unfortunately, news of the Council’s policy doesn’t seem to have filtered down to the local ground maintenance contractors, who merrily sprayed the site with weed killer. Bizarrely, they didn’t spray all of the small patch, so one corner still looks quite colourful and the rest has returned to the wasteland that it was. Oh well, to adapt the words of another song: we get knocked down, but we get up again.

Colourful Kilmacolm We are all aware that when the sun shines people look happier and go about with smiles on their faces. So how many smiley faces have you seen this summer? Not too many probably, as it has not been easy to keep smiling in the rain. We can, however, depend on our begonias to be bright and cheerful in even the dullest, dreariest weather and, if ever we needed proof that begonias were a sensible choice for a Scottish summer, this summer has provided that proof - and there is a bonus! Our teams have not had to do very much watering either, apart from during those hot June days – remember them?

Warm(ish) wet weather is ideal for weeds of course and our volunteers have been kept busy both at our Market Place garden and at the sloping garden at Carriages. We can always do with more volunteers, or just supporters (£5 a year), so get in touch if this appeals to you.

Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society Gardeners everywhere are wondering what this month has in store. Will this be a mellow, autumnal month or one dealing with the aftermath of more inclement weather? This is the time to plan for the winter months - silver-leafed Cineraria and winter flowering Heathers are reliable and colourful, as are Pansies and Wallflowers.

Bulbs can go in next month.

Fruit and vegetables should be harvested and all stored safely in a dry, airy place.

Many trees and shrubs have been hurtling into autumn and foliage has been colouring up for a while. Collect the leaves and push these round shallow-rooted shrubs to form a mulch, or pop into a container specifically for leaves. Leaf mould is made entirely of leaves and is broken down by fungi which then improve the structure of garden soil and when used as a mulch. Compost is made up of a variety of materials and is broken down by a variety of bacteria and beasties and ultimately contains more beneficial nutrients for soil structure.

Leaf mould and compost are both used to improve soil quality, but they differ in their composition and the process which creates them.

In August we held our Garden Festival in Freeland Church Hall.

Members had the task of growing Sunflowers and Potatoes and the Festival was the moment of the “grand reveal”. A report will be included in the October issue of The Advertizer.

The Gardening Club will meet on Thursday 14th September at 8pm in Freeland Church Hall when we will pick up some seasonal tips on pruning. There are various ways to prune and it’s always useful to have clarification, or just a “refresher” on the best way to get the best results next year. Even if you are not a member and are interested, do come along - you will be most welcome.

Name: The Black Gates Trail Difficulty: Strenuous in parts

Time: 2 hours Distance: 3 miles points of interest: Grabbing an ice cream wafer from The Rock Café; visiting the bowmore botanic gardens and looking out for the gillie dhu fairy which is said to live in Puck’s Glen!

This is a lovely walk to do if you have visitors over and you want to take them on a day trip across the water – or just if you fancy a wee jaunt to Dunoon yourself. The experience of going on a ferry feels like you’re on holiday and you might be lucky enough to see dolphins in the Clyde as you cross.

The walk starts at Benmore Forest Carpark. From here follow the Black Gates Trail. A famous Edinburgh brewing family, the Youngers, bequeathed this estate to the nation in 1928. Early in the 19th century it was planted with exotic non-native conifers. Arboretums of this sort were fashionable with Victorian landowners at the time. These have matured into a magnificent forest.

In this first section you may see towering Californian Redwoods, Douglas Firs, Silver Firs and Cypresses.

The walk meanders through the forest crossing several streams and a few viewpoints across Strath Eachaig to hills in the distance.

These might be good places to enjoy a picnic.

Following the gorge cleaved out by the Eas Mor stream, the second last section takes you down through Puck’s Glen. (Eas Mor simply translating as ‘big waterfall’). If ever there was a place that might be home to faires then it’s here. Puck’s Glen is a magical place full of craggy walkways, winding steps and bridges, branches dripping with lichens, tumbling waterfalls and deep pools. In fact legend has it that the Gillie Dhu fairy lives within this gorge – so keep an eye out!

At the bottom of the glen turn right and follow the lowland pathway through the forest back to the Benmore carpark. Although this is a relatively short walk, it is quite strenuous due to the many uneven steps and steep sections, so a rewarding scone at the Benmore Botanic Garden Café or an ice-cream wafer at the Rock Café in Dunoon may now be in order.

The Gillie Dhu is a male fairy with dark hair usually clothed in moss and leaves. He is shy, quiet and kind to children, but can be mischievous and wild sometimes. From Gaelic, ‘gillie’ means ‘lad’ or ‘youth’ and ‘dhu’ means ‘dark’.

RSPB Lochwinnoch We are at the end of what has been a very wet and dreich summer, but that should not stop you getting out and about. We are all used to the great Scottish weather of four seasons in the one day. This is the time of the year when the reserve starts to change too. The wildflowers begin to die down to make way for fabulous fungi. The leaves on the trees begin to change colours to rich red, yellow and brown. It’s not only the vegetation and the trees that change, its the types of wildlife also. Our summer migrants are starting to leave, with some already away. We are saying goodbye to our Swallows, Swifts and Sand Martins and saying hello to our autumn and winter friends. At the reserve you will start to see magnificent Whooper Swans, Teal, Wigeon, Pochard and many other types of waterbird gracing our scrape and lochs.

First set of #YouDecide projects complete Kilmacolm Horticultural Society The Kilmacolm Flower and Produce Show will be held on Saturday 2nd September in the Cargill Community Centre, Kilmacolm. Doors open at 10.30am with the Prizegiving at 3pm followed by sale of flowers and produce to close the Show.

Entry is £2 for adults, free for children and for the Show’s exhibitors. Classes include Cut Flowers, Pot Plants/Tubs/Hanging Baskets, Vegetables/Fruit, plus awards for Novices, Homebaking, Floral Art and young Gardeners sections.

Communities in Renfrewshire are seeing the benefit of their decisions as the first set of projects from the #YouDecide campaign are completed.

The campaign saw local people put forward their ideas for infrastructure projects in their area after Renfrewshire Council made £1.2million available for communities to spend on projects that would enhance their neighbourhoods – and then they voted for their favourites from the ideas put forward.

A new walkway in Erskine has been completed along the riverside which is being used by walkers, cyclists and by the area’s parkrun for warm-ups.

The Kilmacolm Horticultural Society website www.kilmacolmhorticultural. com contains details of the Show and the varied programme of the Society throughout the year. Please support the future of the Society, founded in 1879, by signing up to an annual subscription of £5 when you visit the Show.

Howwood Park has also benefitted from the investment with the perimeter path around the park upgraded with a new surface giving better access to the play park and for walkers, and work is underway to redevelop the football pitch in the centre of the park.

A varied series of lectures in 2023/2-24 commence 18th October at 7pm with a return visit from our most popular speaker Mr John West. His chosen theme offers the question ‘Does a Garden need Flowers?’ Everyone is most welcome, free to members, donation by visitors.

Another project completed has seen both footpaths on the route to Inchinnan Primary School at Broompark Avenue resurfaced to make it safer for pupils and parents on the walk to school.

The committee, under the leadership of Dr Ian Morrice, look forward to sharing with you the delights of beautiful blooms, exotic plants, quality vegetables, plus delicious homebaking, admirable floral art skills and imaginative entries from our younger gardeners. Keep the date free! - Saturday 2nd September!

Other projects completed so far include a new path on Ferry Road in Bishopton and Abbey Road in Elderslie, improved access to Glencoats Park to support visitors with mobility issues, installation of a gate from Inchinnan playing fields car park to allow direct access to the park, and the path will be upgraded too, along with seating on the cycle route along the A8 Greenock Road in Inchinnan.

Local History History Spot Ralston Gudgeon, RSW, 1910-1984

The Artist in Kilbarchan

Ralston Gudgeon is best known for his hundreds of beautiful paintings of birds in watercolour or gouache. Ralston studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1928 to 1933. His talent was well recognised in 1933 when he was winner of the Glasgow Institute Torrance Memorial Award. In 1936, a one man show of his paintings was held in the Annan Gallery, in Glasgow, where 35 paintings, mainly of birds, were exhibited. The success of this exhibition may have led to his election in 1937 to RSW, the youngest man to date to become a member. However, this article does not focus on his paintings - it is about Ralston Gudgeon, the man.

Ralston spent part of his childhood in Kilbarchan. His passion for painting birds began at an early age. He and his boyhood friend in Kilbarchan, Andrew Jackson, loved the outdoor life and roamed the local woods and fields around the village, searching for birds. Andrew could identify the birds while Ralston sketched and coloured.

In the mid-1930s, Ralston’s address was 15 Park View, Kilbarchan. He took an active part in the Lilias Day celebrations in the 1930s, performing as an actor in the Marjorie Bruce Tableau at the Lilias Day Pageants of both 1931 and 1933. He is also recorded as painting posters advertising the 1934 Lilias Day. Ralston was fond of animals and kept a pet fox. It was the talk of the village when he took his fox on a dog lead for its daily walk.

Ralston became acquainted with Jessie Cassels Ritchie (1909-1999) who lived at High Gradach, East Barnaigh, Kilbarchan, and worked as a governess.

On 28th July 1937, Ralston and Jessie were married at Headless Cross, Gretna, By declaration in presence of Alexander Overend, 35 William Street, Johnstone, and Margaret Dickie Moore, Advance Place, Bridge of Weir’. This irregular marriage was registered at Gretna on 17th September, 1937. We can assume that Ralston was a bit of a romantic as well as talented and sociable.

Ralston’s very successful artistic career was disrupted by his service in the army in WW2. After the war, Ralston set about resurrecting his career as an artist. From 1947 to 1951 his paintings were on show in numerous Scottish exhibitions including an unusual one in Paisley, held in the photographer George Edward Russell’s studio at 55 High Street. It is unknown how many paintings were actually sold at these art shows. Post war times were hard, and Ralston, now living in Inverkip, was in financial difficulties. However, despite this set back, his artistic career recovered and the family later moved to Callander.

Although little is remembered of Ralston Gudgeon’s time in Kilbarchan, he is very well remembered in Callander, where he lived in the nineteen fifties and sixties. He was popular in the town and local people proudly displayed his paintings in their homes. I know of only one of his paintings, entitled “Angry Roosters”, proudly on display in a Kilbarchan home today. © 2023, Helen Calcluth, Renfrewshire Local History Forum

Johnstone History Society Our members and friends will be pleased to see our new season of meetings starts on Tuesday 12th September. The Museum has continued to open over the summer months still manned by volunteers.

This has proved challenging over this period as people go on holiday and as we do not have surplus of volunteers. Paisley Halloween Festival IT’s going to be spook-tacular !

... Returning this October, with electrifying live performances and installations for all the family.

Each year we work hard to bring you something you haven’t seen before.

In 2021 we went ‘Out of this World’.

Aliens, fallen stars, spacecrafts and floating moons took over the town and the spires of Paisley Town Hall played host to an enormous lazer show. In addition, a selection of international artists displayed installations throughout Paisley Abbey Gardens.

In 2022 we took to the rooftops with ‘Heroes, Myths and Legends’. Oneeyed monsters invaded the town hall, giant spiders were seen roaming the streets and steampunk dragons breathed fire into the skies.

Our local communities are at the heart of all our events and we work closely with Renfrewshire groups to co-produce elements of the festival. Whether helping to craft creative installations, feeding into our Events Youth Panel, or volunteering on the day. Our diverse community voices are part of what makes the festival so unique.

The festival is produced by Renfrewshire Council’s award-winning Events Team, who are driven to create meaningful and exciting in-person experiences. The team work with international producers, directors and artists to bring the event to life. We know how important the festival is for Renfrewshire, so we work with local suppliers and performers as much as possible.

We can’t give too much away about this years’ event. However, with incredible live performances and lots of spooky vibes, you won’t want to miss one of Scotland’s best events.

Eco Recycling: Each class has been bringing in plastic bottles and aluminium cans for recycling. Mrs Morrison, our wonderful Gardening Granny, and her team have been collecting our vouchers and taking them to Sainsbury’s to receive monetary vouchers in return. These are then used to purchase seeds, compost etc., for our Gardening Club.

Our Gardening Club members have harvested some of their produce already. What a great growing season it has been. We have also entered the National Potato Competition.

Nurture Award - We are very proud to be awarded our RNRA (Renfrewshire Nurturing Relationship Approaches) Level 2, Ruby award for completing four nurture principles and embedding this approach into our daily practice.

EuroQuiz Competition - Our wonderful P6 team came second in the EuroQuiz, held in Edinburgh. This is a massive event across Scotland, involving 551 schools in the final competition. We are so proud of our team and would like to thank them for studying so hard and achieving this amazing result. Well done!

Sports News Squash Tournament - Pupils from P5 entered the Strathgryffe Squash Tournament and were delighted to gain 1st, 3rd and 4th places. They were competing against pupils from Bridge of Weir Primary and St Fillan’s Primary. The coaches were very impressed with their skills. Well done to everyone who took part.

Football Tournament - Well done to the girls football team, who played 10 games in the heat and did very well receiving many medals. Mr Patterson is looking forward to coaching all of our football teams next session.

New Library - We are absolutely delighted with our brand new indoor and outdoor library area. This was designed by our pupils and they are thrilled with the installation. Each week classes visit the library to read or listen to a story with their class teacher.

Kilmacolm Running Festival

The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people. Around 160 young people aged 14 – 25 are elected every two years to represent every part of Scotland and campaign for positive change.

The next SYP elections will take place in November and applications are now open!

Renfrewshire Golf Union Freedman Trophy Alexander Farmer wins Freedman Trophy - Renfrewshire Boys Match Play Championship The final of the competition was played at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Sunday 23rd July and conditions on the day were good for golf with a light wind and a continuation of the recent warm weather with hard running ground.

The final matched Alexander Farmer – Kilmacolm, recently capped for the Scottish Boys Team, against Ethan Lang - Elderslie and the golf on display was of the highest order as would be expected by 2 fine players.

Farmer was quickly 2 up driving the first for birdie, winning the 2nd with par while both drove the 3rd for matching birdies. A good final played in a great spirit by both players with some great golf.

In the morning semi-final Alexander Farmer beat Ashton McKechan - Paisley 4/3, while Ethan Lang beat Calum McLelland - Fereneze by 2 holes.

Other quarter finalists were Ross Anderson, Jamie Ferguson and Tom Hepburn all Williamwood Golf Club and Callum Watters - Gourock.

Renfrewshire Golf Union thanks Kilmacolm Golf Club for their continued support of the event and the Freedman family though Alison Murray for attendance and in presenting the trophy.

Ranfurly Castle golf club ladies Competitions continue at a pace as we near the end of this seasons golf.

On 19th July the Walker Quaich was played for and Louise Cooper was the winner with a net 72, Runner-up was Pat Pennel with a net 75.

16th August was the Gillies Trophy Stableford, won by Pamela MacKenzie with 38 points.

The final West Renfrewshire League match was played at Kilmacolm on 10th August and it was a halved match. Many congratulations to all team members who have played this year. The Greenlees team have one more match to play in early September. Best of luck to them.

NEW FUNCTIONAL TRAINER AT STRATHGRYFFE The gym at Strathgryffe has had an upgrade with new weight racks and a functional trainer A functional trainer is a piece of equipment which incorporates multiple cables (usually 2) and attachments so you can perform any directional movements such as pulls, fly’s, curls and everything in between. The pulley system on these units can be calibrated both up and down as well as internally and externally for a great range of movement during your exercise. A functional trainer means there are no limits, you have total control of all your body parts when it comes to training!

Circuits training is on every Thursday evening at 6.30pm and Saturday morning at 10am with fitness trainer James Dare.

A general fitness class is also run by Michael Coulton Fitness is on Wednesday’s at 10.30am. All sessions £4 for members / £6 for guests.

The Old Course Ranfurly golf club It’s been another busy month at The Old Course Ranfurly, both from a playing and a social perspective. Earlier this month we held a “Summer Quiz Night” which was as usual, a sell out. This was a joint effort from our 2 quizmasters, Donald Hepburn and Craig Gamble. Congratulations to the winning team (pictured) who chose The Beatson and St Vincent’s Hospice to benefit from the £276 raised on the night in memory of Peter Colquhoun.

Ladies Section Well, here we are through the summer season and it’s the time of the Ladies Outing. This year it was hosted at Clober Golf Course in Milngavie. The day, organised by our own Lady Captain Linda Anderson, saw 36 ladies start with the usual putting competition.

The course was unforgiving in catching some of us out on those quirky dog-leg holes. The day got hotter and the greens got slicker.

Some very good and very close scores were returned, but it was Lorna Bell with a nett 64, who won overall on the day. Look at the smile on her face, pictured here with Linda Anderson. Congratulations Lorna what a playing year you’ve had!

Saturday 12th August was our annual finals day and what a day it was!

Despite the challenging weather conditions, it was another memorable day culminating in karaoke in the evening. A huge congratulations to all our 2023 winners and also to the runners up who can be proud of themselves in reaching their respective final matches.

Our Team Winners were Lana Wilson and Marion Downie, who kindly checked all the scores on the day. A well deserved win ladies.

Let’s hope they can agree who takes the trophy home.

An exclusive, but everpopular, competition is the Past Captains Trophy followed by dinner at Old Ranfurly. This year 17 Past Captains and current Captain played on a very hot first Sunday of August. Organised

by Fiona MacPhee, it was great to hear stories from past Captains and look through some photos sharing memories.

The Old Course Ranfurly prides itself on being a truly family friendly club. This was particularly true on Sunday 13th August when we held our annual “Family Fun Day” which was a great event for all the family with everything from face painting to bouncy castles, inflatable slides and a kids disco. A great time was had by all who came along.

Kilmacolm Bowling Club - Ladies Section A busy season has proved to be very successful for the Ladies at Kilmacolm.

A friendship day to encourage members & new members proved popular. We enjoyed bowling & a delicious afternoon tea. In August a Triples day in memory of Liz Bennie a former President/Secretary & Greenock & District Secretary was held.

Bill Bennie kindly presented the trophy.

Internal & external competitions have been entered. Three ladies represented the club at the Scottish National Championships at Northfield, Ayr. We have also reached the semi finals of the West of Scotland Championship.

Winning Newton Sheild Team A huge congratulations to our Gents team on retaining the Paisley & District Newton Shield - a fantastic achievement. It was a very closely fought contest against Paisley Golf Club at Ranfurly Castle Golf Course again in very difficult conditions. With the teams tied after all the matches were complete it was a sudden death play-off as the light faded with Kilmacolm clinching it. This was a brilliant team effort, well done to all those involved in all the matches.

A charity day in aid of Alzheimer’s was well supported by members & fellow bowlers from local clubs.

More success to report from our Ladies section with Kilmacolm winning the Inverclyde Mega Watt Trophy which is played annually against the ladies of Gourock and Greenock. This year it was held at Greenock Golf Club in testing conditions and we were delighted that Kilmacolm won in convincing style.

Late News Record numbers take part in Paisley 10k and Fun Run Sunday 20th August

Almost 3,500 people have taken part in the Paisley 10k and Fun Run, a new record for the popular event.

The races are organised by OneRen – the local charitable trust providing cultural, leisure and sporting opportunities to help people enjoy active and healthy lives – and supported by Renfrewshire Council and Kilbarchan Amateur Athletics Club.

Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron, started the race. She said: “It was a real thrill to be here and cheer on the runners.

This event is incredibly inclusive, whether you’re running as an elite athlete, a fun runner or someone with additional needs, the Paisley 10k and Fun Run is for all.”

Many of the fun runners were raising money for charities, good causes and local sports clubs.

The men’s 10k Race men’s winner was Ross Gray, from Inverclyde Athletics Club with a time of 31 minutes and 53 seconds.

Second place went to Lewis Hannigan, from Kilbarchan Amateur Athletics Club, with a time of 31 minutes 57 seconds and third was Jack Heathwood, from Bellahouston Harriers with a time of 32 minutes 7 seconds.

The women’s 10k Race winner was New Zealand native, Katherine Camp with a time of 35 minutes 6 seconds. Second was Nynke Mulholland, from Inverclyde Athletics Club with a time of 35 minutes 21 seconds and third was Mia Padmanabhan, from Garscube Harriers, with a time of 36 minutes 59 seconds.

Dr Victoria Hollows, Chief Executive of race organisers, OneRen, said: “There is a lot of sweat and hard work, but real joy too when runners cross the finish line and it was fantastic to see so many runners of all ages and abilities taking part and well done to them for not only running on the day, but for their dedication and time they put in training for the races.”
