A Brush with Death: in Kilmacolm and Houston The 48 Hour Flickers describe themselves as a group of individuals who ‘used to be youngsters,’ (average age 72.5) who came together to make short films for fun. Their name derives from the 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) - a collaborative worldwide filmmaking competition that challenges people to make a film in only 48 hours; a project that has jump started the careers of filmmakers all over the world. The Advertizer caught up with founding member Bill Crookston to find out a bit more about the group. Why did you form the 48 Hour Flickers? Early in August I saw a short video on YouTube of the Edinburgh contest of the 48 Hour Film Project that took place in May 2023, I found it extremely interesting! I had dabbled in some videos in the past, but had never considered making a film – let alone in under 48 hours! What equipment, what cameras, what microphones are needed? The list went on… Thankfully the 48HFP has a page that explains everything – one thing was obvious – you take part for the FUN of doing it. Did you form specifically for the 48Hour Film Project or were you already making movies with the group? We formed for the competition - on 5th August I emailed some of my friends whom I knew through a shared interest in photography and asked if they would be interested in the concept of making a film over one weekend in October – by 7th August we had formed a team of 9 people. We had never worked together on any project like this before.

were 60 teams! Every Team Leader is invited up onto the stage to select the genre that your team’s film shall be made in. At the end of the event, we are all given the final parts that MUST be included in the film - the name of a character, a line of dialogue and a prop. We drew ‘heist’ genre. The character was to be ‘Ali Silver – Life Coach.’ The Line of dialogue – “Here’s tae us!” The object – a lemon. Please watch our film for the story. There’s a link below. What was the most challenging aspect of making a film in 48 hours? Obviously the 48 Hours! Additionally, the films must be between 4 and 7 minutes long!

Initially we tried to use online Artificial Intelligence (AI) to write some ‘scripts and screenplays’ etc. On subjects of our choosing – I must say it was quite impressive, but obviously NOT ‘real world’ enough! Luckily for us we knew someone here in Kilmacolm and our plots now had life about them.

Our plan was straightforward. Firstly, we got together to collect the teams’ thoughts and tried to get a believable story by around 11pm on Friday. This was then worked on by our scriptwriter to give it a ‘real people’ feel. This script was prepared with suggested angles for the camera and each line of text was given a number.

Where did the name come from?

Surprisingly we found that filming the ending of the movie first, really works – that meant that everything in the film always had to fit the ending! That really concentrates your mind!

48 Hour is a nod to the competition, and Flickers is a nod to the old name for movies! Fancy going to the flicks tonight? Can you tell us a little about Brush with Death? What is the story and how did this idea come about? The concept of the 48HFP is that at the start of the weekend on the Friday Night, the Team Leaders assemble at a venue in Glasgow – this year there

Once it was all recorded the editing took place on the Sunday morning. When the whole team had watched it many times, it was then decided that it was finished. What was it like to see your film on the big screen? I never thought that a film made by us would ever be seen on the screen at the Glasgow Film Theatre – but it was just incredible – the clarity of the image and the fantastic sound system. It was also great to hear the audience reactions to some of the scenes in our film too! What next for the 48 Hour Flickers? We’ve already agreed we’ll do a film around every 3 months and are thinking of entering the Edinburgh event next year.

100th Anniversary of the Monte Carlo Rallye! This January marks the 100th anniversary of the Monte Carlo UK leg starting From Glasgow. Competitors will drive to the Principality of Monaco following in the tracks of the old Montes, taking in many of the famous Cols and Passes in the French Alps. Like many Monte competitors of old, the goal is simply to reach Monte Carlo in time for the party! The winner of the 1924 Monte Carlo Rallye was M J Ledure who started from Glasgow in a Bignan Saloon. In the 50s and 60s the Monte Carlo Rallye was a huge part of Glasgow life. Many people still remember the excitement of the classic cars leaving Blythswood Square where hundreds would brave the winter weather to wave off drivers on the 1600 mile trip to the French Riviera. It is fitting that the race returns to this area to mark the 100th anniversary of the Glasgow start. The Touristique itself will depart from Blythswood Square Gardens on the morning of Wednesday 31st January 2024, and follow the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique competitors to Dover, visiting the Passage Controls en route. After crossing the Channel there is an overnight halt in a chateau outside Calais. On day 2, Thursday 1st February, setting out from Calais, drivers pass through the venue for the Reims starters and then carry on to Langres for the second overnight halt. Day 3, Friday 2nd February, the route travels from Langres to Gap following traditional Monte roads. The next day, Saturday 3rd February, drivers descend from the Alps to the warmth of the winter sunshine and sparkling coastline of Monte Carlo. In the evening a glittering blacktie Gala Dinner and prize giving will be held in the Automobile Club de Monaco.

Fraudsters using Facebook to Target Small Businesses According to Which? Magazine, scams are on the rise, and they have started to target businesses using social media platforms – especially Facebook. A recent scam uses fake accounts purporting to be from Meta or Facebook and these are sending direct messages to business owners. The message tells you that you are infringing Facebook’s trademark rights and that your page is about to be permanently deleted. Then they invite you to ‘file a complaint seeking the reinstatement of your page prior to its removal from Facebook’ if you believe there has been a mistake. They go on to say that if they do not hear from you, or no complaint is lodged their decision will be final. Which? Have discovered at least 10 accounts that are sending these messages. We have listed them below* and none of them are from official Meta or Facebook pages. Within the message there is the option to click on a link to ‘Request a Review’. This in turn opens a ‘dodgy’ website impersonating Meta/Facebook. Cleverly, they include a link to Meta’s privacy policy – which adds authenticity. Clicking a button to ‘Request for Review’ leads you to another webpage titled ‘Intellectual Property Violation’ where they wish you to input personal details. Facebook has confirmed that this is a scam. To report a scam on Facebook, select the three dots on the right-hand side of the page and click ‘report’. You can also report scam websites to the National Cyber Security Centre on www.ncw.gov. uk/section/about-this-website/reportscam-website If you think you’ve been scammed, call your bank immediately and/or call Scotland 101. *Compliance Implementation Team, Meta Page Support, Compliance Department, Brand Content, Security Authentication Group, Compliance Management, Our Terms of Service, Meta Business Support, Meta Business Suite Support, Meta Pay Support

Boundary Changes Proposals Controversial plans to change boundaries, reshaping electoral constituencies in areas of Inverclyde and Renfrewshire, will bring some significant changes locally. Recently, Boundaries Scotland has published proposals for boundary changes for Scottish Parliamentary seats. Although 21 constituencies remain unchanged, out of 73 seats under the new proposals, 26 will retain original name but see changes to the geographical area and 25 will be given new names and boundaries. (1 changes its name but not its boundaries.) A spokesman from Boundary Scotland explained the reasoning behind the move is so that “Each MSP is elected by roughly the same number of people.” And that since the introduction of voting by 16 and 17 year olds, as well as other factors, numbers have changed significantly. Currently some of the existing constituencies are now too big - Falkirk has 86,183 voters - while others are far too small - Glasgow North has 55,722, so it is clear that changes need to be made. In Renfrewshire constituencies include: Renfrewshire North and West, Paisley and Renfrewshire South. The revised boundary proposals would remove Kilmacolm, Renfrew and Gallowhill from the current Renfrewshire North and West constituency. The newly named Renfrewshire West constituency would instead have all of Craigends, Linwood, part of Johnstone, Elderslie, Ward 4 (includes Shortroods, Ferguslie Park, West end of Paisley) together with Bridge of Weir, Houston, Langbank, Bishopton, Erskine and Inchinnan. This will mean an extra 5000 constituents. See here for the new Renfrewshire West Constituency https://boundaries.scot/ sites/default/files/Renfrewshire_West.pdf). Kilmacolm would instead be part of the revised Inverclyde constituency. (See here https://boundaries. scot/sites/default/files/Inverclyde_2.pdf) The proposed new Renfrewshire South constituency loses part of Johnstone, Elderslie and Linwood and means that Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch, Howwood and the remainder of Johnston are included in a constituency which stretches down to Newton Mearns. (See here for the new Renfrewshire South Constituency https://boundaries.scot/sites/ default/files/Renfrewshire_South.pdf)

These proposals only affect the electoral constituency in which you vote at the next Scottish Parliament elections and the MP then elected to represent you. It has no impact on council services nor does it affect the council area, including school catchments, in which you currently reside. When considering changes to Scottish constituency boundaries the commission must: 1. Take account of council area boundaries. 2. Create constituencies and regions that have broadly the same number of electors. 3. Take account of special geographical considerations (including in particular the size, shape and accessibility of a constituency or region). 4. Take account of local ties and other inconveniences caused by changes to constituencies. There is an argument to be had that the proposed new Renfrewshire South constituency has a majority of electors from the East Renfrewshire local authority, and that geographical considerations including transport links have not been adequately taken account of within this area. There are also electors who have formed ties to their representative, and will be upset by the changes to their constituencies - especially if their constituency area has significantly increased in population. Following many local and local authority objections to the proposals Boundaries Scotland have moved to the local inquiry stage of the process. The Inquiry session for the proposed Paisley and Renfrew; Renfrewshire South; and Renfrewshire West constituencies will be held in the afternoon of the 14th December at the Lynnhurst Hotel, Park Road, Johnstone, PA5 8LS Anyone wishing to speak at an inquiry is invited to contact the Commission 0131 244 2001 or e: boundaries.scot@ scottishboundaries.gov.uk to book a slot. Winter Hacks for your Car, Health and Home How to help move a car stuck in snow, light a fire with orange peel and prevent dry skin this winter. Here are a few winter hacks to keep you healthy, cosy and safe this winter.

Santa’s Sleigh

Houston | Run 1 - Thursday 30th November

1. Tyre Tread: Take a 20p coin and insert it into the tread grooves. If you can’t see the outer band on the coin, your tyres are above the legal limit. If you CAN see the band, your tyres could be unsafe/need replaced and need inspection by a qualified mechanic.

Leman Dr, Leman Gr, Alwyn Ave, Bream Pl, Viking Cres, Cormorant Ave, Forties Rd, Claymore Dr, Piper Rd, Piper Ave, Ninian Ave, Brent Cres, Murchison Rd, Hutton Ave, Hewett Cres, Dunlin Cres, Berl Ave

2. Throw a piece of carpet or a rug over your windshield to keep off the ice and snow. Tuck it under the wipers to hold it down, then put it in the boot when you’re ready to go. If you get stuck, you can also use it to help you get traction.

Crosslee Cres, Leeburn Ave, Craigholme, Woodside, The Beeches, Birch Gro, Riverside, Broomfield, The Meadows, Brackendene, Crossways

3. Clean your car often, as de-icing compounds can be corrosive to the surfaces they attach to. 4. Cover windshield wipers with old socks so snow won’t stick to them. 5. If your car gets stuck in the snow, try putting cat litter under the tyres to gain some traction. Health 6. Take Vitamin D. We get this naturally from exposure to the sun and in Scotland that is in short supply during the winter months. The NHS advises us to take a small amount of vitamin D in autumn and winter. 7. Use workout or running tights as a base layer under walking trousers. These items have good breathability and wicking and immediately make you feel cosy when out on winter walks. 8. Hot water dries your skin. Take short or lukewarm showers to prevent this. 9. If you suffer from hacks on your hands and fingers use gloves after moisturising your hands for added moisturisation. 10. Get outside. Even if it’s gloomy, you’re mental and physical health will thank you. Home 11. Invest in a small heated throw. They use very little electricity and can be used if you plan to staying/working in one place for long periods (instead of a fan heater, for example). Or simply fill up your hot water bottle and keep it close. Alternatively use a rug buddy – which can provide removable under floor heating. 12. If you have a real fire or wood burner, save your orange peels and dry them out. The oils they have are very flammable and will help ignite your fire – and they will give off a lovely festive citrusy smell.

Bridge of Weir Churches

Bridge of Weir Men’s Shed

December heralds the start of Advent and sees the preparations for Christmas in full flow. Both Freeland and St Machar’s Ranfurly Churches have lots of events and services on offer and hope you’ll be able to join us at this special time of year.

Many of you will know that Councillor James MacLaren has been searching for a suitable site for a Men’s Shed in Bridge of Weir for quite some time. A Men’s Shed is a fantastic way of bringing men together socially and boosting their confidence. Following a suggestion at the local TARA meeting that he recently attended, that the old pavilion in Houston Road Park might be suitable, he has had a visit with interested parties and it does indeed look promising. It will need some work, but there is nothing that is too daunting.

Sunday 3rd - 3pm Blue Advent Service at St. Machar’s Ranfurly Church Thursday 7th – 5.15pm Junior Choir Christmas Concert at St Machar’s Ranfurly Church Saturday 9th – 10.30am Carol Singing at the Piazza Come along and join us for hot chocolate, non alcoholic mulled wine and biscuits. Monday 11th – 6.30pm Mary and Joseph & a Donkey Called Hank Freeland Church

A Christmas musical suitable for all the family. Lasts 1 hour with refreshments after. For more info email bridgeofweirgabb@ gmail.com Sunday 17th – 4pm Christmas Music Service at St. Machar’s Ranfurly Church. The choirs of St Machar’s Ranfurly Church tell the Christmas story with seasonal music and readings. Sunday 17th – 7pm Candlelight Service at Freeland Church: featuring the very well-known musician Yvonne Lyon and also local community choir Gryffe Voices. Come and Celebrate the Greatest Hope Ever Given this Christmas. With refreshments and a mince pies after. Tuesday 19th – 6pm Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s Church Wednesday 20th – 10am – 12 noon Christmas Drop-in at St Machar’s Ranfurly Church: play, crafts, Christmas stories and songs - Free.

The “Sheds” are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The Men’s Shed are a group of men who get together to support each other, share skills and develop new and exciting projects for the community. Groups of men get together and help reduce loneliness and isolation, often making things for their community, but most importantly, they’re fun. The men come from all walks of life, many have had a journey and some may be facing a difficult and stressful time at the present. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but might include a wood lathe and other machinery. This project enables them to achieve a sense of purpose, it also gives them somewhere to be themselves and feel safe while doing so. Cllr MacLaren is keen to find out the number of people interested in joining. Please send him your name and email address along with what you bring to the party (can be nothing or a lot). The old pavilion is in Bridge of Weir, but men from other villages will be welcome. A public meeting is being organised for the 11th December at 11am in The Pirie, Freeland Church, Bridge of Weir and a committee will be formed to take this forward. Please email Cllr MacLaren at cllr.james. maclaren@renfrewshire.gov.uk

ward 11 cllr james maclaren Houston Hello On the same day that the council decided to put up the parking charges across Renfrewshire and move from Free for Three to Free for One from February next year, I learnt that ScotRail is proposing to cut the trains to and from Langbank. The draft ScotRail timetable aims to reduce the direct service to Greenock or Gourock from Langbank. The only train that will stop at Langbank will be the Wemyss Bay train, but it does not go to Gourock. Local residents can make representation at htps://www.scotrail.co.uk/ ayrshire-and-inverclyde-timetable-consultation though sadly the consultation closes on 20th November, but I will give them my tuppence worth. The other survey affecting all my ward is about our bus network. Whether you use buses regularly, sometimes or not at all, the Council wants to hear from you. Well, Langbank has no bus service and Bishopton is fighting for a service to and from Braehead which SPT don’t seem to have quite grasped. The Council has been gathering feedback to hear your experiences and consider what improvements can be made to the bus network across Renfrewshire. On page 18 of this issue of The Advertizer you will find an article about the Men’s Shed for Bridge of Weir with an upcoming public meeting on 11th December at 11am in Freeland Church. There is no particular reason why Bishopton and Langbank should not have their own Men’s Shed. If you would like to get involved to see any of these projects come to fruition then please let me know. There is a lot going on with the schooling in my ward - you can read updates online from the council at: www.renfrewshire.gov. uk/dargavel-ps-update and www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/parkmains-hs-update

Surgeries: 6.30pm to 7pm: Langbank Church - 1st Monday of the month; Cargill Hall, Bridge of Weir – 2nd Monday of the month; Bishopton Community Centre – 3rd Monday of the month.

We were delighted to be awarded a grant from the Scottish Book Trust for Book Week Scotland 2023, which allowed us to work across the generations as pupils of Gryffe High School shared their stories of adventure with people who come along to Houston Hello, our dementia inclusive café. We spent a morning working with poet and author Ken Cockburn and 12 volunteer pupils from Gryffe, making origami boats and using these and other items as a prompts to write imaginative stories about an adventure on a boat. Some of the stories took us to far and distant lands, and others to eating fish and chips on the Scottish Coast. Ken and the pupils came along to Houston Hello in the afternoon. Using his mother’s old school bag, full of different objects, Ken invited us to think about where we might have travelled and share stories and poems about different places we might go to in our imagination, on a boat. He showed us a Chinese willow pattern plate and reminded us all of the story of the two young lovers that its iconic pattern represents. The pupils showed everyone how to make origami boats and we all shared our stories and memories of the places we have travelled to. It was a wonderful day of sharing stories across the generations. We would like to thank Ken Cockburn and the pupils of Gryffe High School for taking part in this event, and to the Scottish Book Trust for this award that allowed us to bring the generations together in our community.

Houston & Killellan Kirk With just a few weeks to go now until Christmas, things are busier than ever. Our annual appeal for Gifts for Prisoners’ Children is well under way, and we are looking forward to our Gift Service on December 10th, when staff from CrossReach will visit us to collect all the presents. A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Our Kirk Postie service opens for business again from December 11th – 14th, with the sorting office at the West Halls, Main Street in Houston open from 10am - 12noon and 7pm - 8pm. Guaranteed delivery to anywhere in Houston, Crosslee and Brookfield by December 18th, for just 30p per card. Last year we raised over £1,000 for St Vincent’s Hospice and it would be lovely to match or even top this!

St Mary’s Carol Service You are warmly invited to come to The Community Candlelight Service of Readings and Carols In the Church of St Mary The Virgin On Johnstone Road, Bridge of Weir on Tuesday 19th December at 6pm. Enjoy Mulled Wine & Mince Pies in good company afterwards.

Reminder!

There will be no January 2024 issue. Please send any news for our February issue by Wednesday 17th January.

ward 10 cllr audrey doig Over the last month I attended the Positive about Youth event in Renfrew which was sponsored by both Renfrewshire Council and the Scottish Youth Parliament, which is affiliated to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. I was very impressed by the number and quality of the entrants for the various prizes that were awarded. In particular I would like to commend two of my young constituents who won awards, Ryan Mackie of Linwood who won a Young Sports Person Award, and Chloe Calderwood from Houston who won a Young Volunteer Award. It was great to see two young local people being recognised for their positive contribution at a time when the media only seems to want to highlight the minority of antisocial youth.

Houston & Given the high number of complaints I receive in my civic postbag Crosslee SWI about declining bus services, particularly between the villages and the main towns in Renfrewshire, I strongly urge constituents to go onto the Council’s website and take part in the Bus Consultation which it is currently undertaking. This is to highlight in forensic detail the gaps that exist in local bus services and look at realistic solutions. Some want to sloganize and point out the obvious deficiencies in current bus provision, but without saying where the money would come from to change that. I would also like to wish all my constituents across the ward, of all faiths and none, a very happy and joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2024. As families gather around the tree let us all try and keep an eye on those, such as the very elderly, who may have little or no family. Please consider the vulnerable and less fortunate this Christmas.

ward 9 cllr gillian graham Public transport is a lifeline particularly to residents in our villages. Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch and Howwood have been badly hit by the reduction in McGill’s bus services. Renfrewshire Labour has established a Better Buses Campaign, it’s clear that residents are demanding improvements to local bus services. Members of the public have signed up to be part of our Better Buses Steering Group to formulate a response to a SPT consultation, recommending a publicly owned bus transport alternative to the current unregulated framework which has so badly failed residents. Kilbarchan residents will be aware of the proposed Cala housing development in the village. I understand that Cala intend to submit a planning application Nov/Dec this year. I have received many emails from residents about how to comment on this proposal. Should you wish to comment on any planning proposal you can submit these to the Council’s Planning Department https://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/ article/2149/Planning-building-standards-and-regeneration or email the local Ward Councillors: Cllr Gillian Graham, Cllr Chris Gilmour, Cllr Andy Doig, Cllr Emma Rodden. I’m looking forward to visiting various local Christmas fairs and craft fairs over the coming weeks in Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch and Johnstone. I plan to do my Christmas shopping there, they’re a great opportunity to purchase unique and often handmade gifts, whilst supporting local groups and crafters. The festive season is an opportunity for us to come together as families, friends and as a community. Last year I lost my dad a few days before Christmas. It was his favourite time of the year, and I am reminded of the many people who may be lonely this Christmas, or who find this season difficult. Taking time out of our own celebrations with simple acts of kindnesses can help; checking in on neighbours, helping with shopping or just a chat on the doorstep. Meanwhile whether you have quiet time planned or a houseful, I’d like to wish you and those you love a very joyful festive season and a happy and healthy 2024.

Howwood Community Council (HCC) Another year coming towards its close and it has been a busy time for the Community Council! This year saw the return of the Community Council Elections which take place every four years. We were delighted to attract three new members. From the 2022 AGM to the 2023 AGM (October each year) we have partnered with Renfrewshire Council (RC) and our Local Councillors to deliver • The Christmas Lights Switch-on and supporting activities • Village Hall improvements and promotion of its use. Wi-fi will hopefully be installed by April 2024. • Meetings with the RC with the support of villagers, to make our roads safer through the Safer Roads Initiative. Work has begun to achieve this which will continue over the next 3 years, • The running of the Beer Tent at The Howwood Fete • Warm Spaces Events held twice weekly in the Village Hall – craft and sewing sessions and social gatherings with sandwiches, hot drinks, cake and biscuits. We hope to organise both these again this winter. • Senior Citizens Afternoon Teas in December last and May this year which were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. • Funding for Defibrillators, adding a fourth one installed at Midton Bowling Club this year. • The funding to renovate the Hartfield Thunderbolt Memorial to 2nd Lt. Herman Carey of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) who lost his life during the Second World War. • Support for Howwood’s Remembrance Day service where villagers young and old pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

ward 9 cllr andy doig Lochwinnoch and Howwood faced one of their greatest challenges as communities over the last month with the sudden and unexpected end of the Key Coaches no 4 daytime service from Lochwinnoch to Johnstone Station. I emailed the Council’s representative on the SPT, the SPT themselves and McGill’s Buses. I also contacted local parliamentarians to get them to lobby the SPT as to the seriousness of the situation. I know that the SPT Chief Executive herself was involved and I wish to commend the SPT and Cllr Jim Paterson for the support they gave me in fighting both Lochwinnoch and Howwood’s corner. I am delighted that Kilwinning-based Shuttle Coaches have stepped in to take over the former no 4 daytime route from Lochwinnoch to Johnstone Station. At the last meeting of the Council’s Economy and Regeneration Board I had my dissent recorded to a decision by the Council to enter a potential partnership with a developer to develop a hotel on the site of the former Paisley Centre. This was because the report before Councillors made clear the commercial case for this concept was weak, but might succeed with an injection of public sector money. I moved to reject the report, but sadly none of the political parties, Labour, SNP, or Tory, supported me so my motion fell. However, I recorded my dissent to this decision and will continue to speak out against it. I will not stand idly by to see the Council Tax-payers of Johnstone, Lochwinnoch, Howwood, and Kilbarchan subsidise yet another Paisley vanity project, of which there have been far too many over the decades. Lastly, but far from least, I would also like to wish all my constituents across the ward, of all faiths and none, a very happy and joyous Christmas and a good New Year in 2024.

Kilmacolm Christmas Community Celebration

In December 2022, all the churches of Kilmacolm joined together for a united Christmas event. A large group of people gathered to sing carols in the Piazza and then moved into St Columba Church for a joint carol service. We are currently planning a similar gathering to take place at 1pm on Saturday 16th December. This year we will be accompanied by members of the Port Glasgow Salvation Army brass band. After the carol singing out of doors, we will again move into St Columba Church for a special Christmas family service featuring puppet performances, followed by seasonal refreshments. We really hope that you can join us to celebrate Christmas in the heart of the village, with members of all Kilmacolm’s churches. All welcome.

ward 1 cllr Stephen Mccabe I was honoured to represent the Council at the Remembrance Service in Kilmacolm’s Old Kirk on Remembrance Sunday and to lay a wreath at Kilmacolm’s War Memorial. The Service was very poignant, and the knitted poppy display was wonderful. Well done to the Nifty Knitters Group. It was also good to see so many turn out at the War Memorial to remember the fallen of the village. The Christmas lights will be switched on on Friday 1st December. The Quarrier’s event starts at 3.30pm and Kilmacolm at 6pm. Unlike the annual fireworks display in Greenock, Christmas hasn’t been cancelled this year. With the Council facing the likelihood of further cuts in funding from the Scottish Government next year I am not confident we will see Santa next Christmas. I continue to push Council Officers to have the electric vehicle charging points in the Lochwinnoch Road car park replaced. They have faced major issues with the current maintenance contractor and will now procure new equipment from another contractor. As part of the programme of improvements to Birkmyre Park the benches in the seated pavilion are being refurbished. At the time of writing the strikes affecting our schools have been suspended with the main union Unison recommending acceptance of the latest pay offer to its members. While this would bring this year’s dispute to an end, I fear we will face more strikes next year unless Councils receive a fair funding settlement from the Scottish Government. With the First Minister prioritising a freeze in Council Tax this seems unlikely. I hope everyone has a happy Christmas and a peaceful start to 2024.

Please come along to support your local artists and to find some unique festive gifts.

ward 1 cllr david wilson The regular observation of the 2 minutes Remembrance silence was well attended at the Memorial in the Cargill on the 11th November. This allows people who cannot manage the War memorial on the Sunday an opportunity to acknowledge those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today”. The school band led the parade to St Columbas Church in the village and again at 12.30pm the parade through Port Glasgow. A pipe band draws the crowd. Joint Christmas services on the Eve and Christmas Day will be held at the Old Kirk. This is my favourite season of the year in our schools. The presentations and celebrations are quite wonderful. Scottish Water have agreed to board up and make safe temporarily the Pump House at the Pacemuir Bridge until a decision is made on its future. I suggest demolition. Thanks are due to the many village residents who wrote to the Scottish Government objecting to the Council Tax supplements of 7.5, 12.5, 17.5and 22.5% for bands E to H. These were not proportionate and thankfully have been withdrawn. The hedges on the Lochwinnoch Road were cut. There is a regular 4 times a year grounds maintenance of the plots at Leperstone. The Scottish Water Top Up public tap has been agreed for the village centre. I failed to have the brown bins extended this year. Last year there was an extension due to earlier strike action. The leaves were late in falling and the village had an attractive “New England” appearance. Litter is a problem and the village was outraged by the widely circulated dumping of an old bathroom suite on the Auchenbothie Road. I know that the black bags are investigated by our staff, looking for details, who moved quickly to clear up the mess. One of these days somebody will receive the maximum £40,000 fine. I have had too many hospital discharges delayed due to difficulty in organising care packages. Fortunately all have been resolved, but staffing is a problem. You can only ask hard working people to do so much. Tom Fyffe was a Councillor for the Village representing the Lib Dems from 2003 to 2012. We worked together as Chair and Vice -Chair of planning and I was saddened to hear of his passing.

Out and About Bridge of Weir Hillwalkers Tillicoultry and Ben Cleuch, one of our favourite walks. The path up Milll Glen leads into a gorge and crosses the burn several times. A walkway has been constructed to allow passage through some of the narrowest sections but we were soon confronted with a vertical drop where the walkway had been swept away, fortunately there were sufficient holds to permit an interesting scramble to regain the path. A long, steep slog up The Law followed, giving extensive views over the Forth valley. As often happens, the summit was shrouded in cloud, on the descent we cleared the cloud and returned via Silver Glen. Theclub’s38thanniversary was celebrated with a weekend trip to Oban. Various members arrived at different times, a variety of walks being undertaken en route. Over the weekend some chose to climb the corbett Creach Bheinn in fierce wind while others variously visited the islands of Easdale, Luing and Kerrera. Other walks included the coastal walk to Dunstaffnage castle, Inverawe and Bonawe Ironworks site, to Inver on Loch Etive, Pulpit Hill to Kerrera while an attempt on Cruachan was thwarted by high winds. Ben Ledi was our last Sunday walk of the year, it is a straightforward but fairly steep climb on a well constructed path, and height is rapidly gained. The temperature rapidly dropped at the summit so a quick break while enjoying views to a snow dusted Ben Lawers and distant Cairngorms then descent via a colourful Stank Glen returning through the riverside woods.

Kilbarchan Smile and Community Council Paisley Colour Photographic Club Heritage Garden - Following the award of a small grant from Renfrewshire Council there is the opportunity to make some improvements to the small park area on Ewing Street at the bottom of Well Road (photo below) We would love to hear any thoughts or ideas you may have about this project. Some initial thoughts include: • Replacing seating • Creating an accessible path • Solar Lighting • Flower beds for plants linked to the villages weaving heritage • An interpretation panel regarding our weaving heritage. You Decide - As part of Community Choices, Renfrewshire Council awarded funds to support infrastructure projects across Renfrewshire. One of the projects chosen by Kilbarchan residents was to improve the entrance to the village, specifically the roundabout at Easwald Bank. The council are now seeking your ideas to progress this project. What would you like to see? A statue or sculpture of: A local person like Habbie Simpson the Piper? Something related to our weaving heritage like a weaving loom? A much-loved building such as the Steeple Building? Of something to do with nature? Once they have your ideas, they will identify the most popular one and commission an artist to take that idea to the next stage and more consultation with the community Any input would be much appreciated. CHRISTMAS COMES BUT ONCE A YEAR ... It doesn’t seem like a year since Brighter Bridge of Weir were last looking out the Christmas lights for the Woodland Garden and other parts. Our last big event of this year is our Christmas Pop-Up Shop, on Saturday 2nd December. It’s our main fund-raiser and provides the means to purchase most of next year’s plants for the village. After that we probably won’t be out so much, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll be doing nothing – some things just need to be done all year round. We hope that readers enjoyed the floral display throughout the village this past year (and the Christmas lights, too!) and we thank the residents, businesses and local groups who helped to provide the essential funding and support that made it possible. We look forward to doing it all again next year. Meantime, from all of us at Brighter Bridge of Weir to all of you out there, have a very Merry Christmas!

Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society Members of the Gardening Club met for their AGM recently. The time passed so quickly the eagerly awaited quiz (by some!) was postponed till 2024! The recent vibrant, autumnal colours have lifted spirits at a difficult time. We remember earlier gardeners who laid out gardens but never saw their plants in full maturity, so it is us who enjoy these vivid displays. What would they make of the current trend to slab and deck new-build gardens? New owners should consider at least one specimen tree - a focal point and feeding station, or shelter for birds who will otherwise avoid sterile hard-landscaping. Members always encourage wildlife into gardens and will happily recommend versatile small trees or large shrubs to new gardeners. Follow us on Facebook! The autumn berries have been gobbled up by hungry blackbirds. Now it is the turn of the glaucous amethyst berries on Callicarpas. Is it going to be a hard winter? We can guess and make best use of sunny, wintry days to keep the garden tidy and replace the leaves -tossed around by birds searching for a hibernating snack – back beneath plants and keep paths clear. If you feed the birds, don’t stop. They burn up energy too flying around looking for food. Keep feeding stations clean and top up fresh water supplies. Check peanut holders and throw rain-soaked ones in your compost. The birds won’t eat mouldy nuts! Blackbirds adore sultanas and will be waiting, first-thing, at the door for this delicious protein supplement! With luck, they may be accompanied by a thrush. Birds are also very fond of peanut butter. Spread some on stale baking etc., warm slightly so it sinks in, then put outside in a caged container. This will provide fat, nourishment and carbs. Merry Christmas to members and all gardeners!

Santa’s Missing Reindeer

RSPB Lochwinnoch We are nearly at the end of 2023, and the year has gone so fast. At the reserve, all our winter visitors have arrived, with Whooper Swans, Wigeons, Tufted Ducks, and

Goldeneyes out on the lochs. Along the woodland trail, garden and woodland birds are busy at the feeding stations, hungry and jostling for their place. At this time of the year, when Christmas is fast approaching, one bird to look out for at the reserve and in the garden is the Robin. It always looks cheery to me with its bright red breast, happy song, and friendly nature. Most people associate the Robin with Christmas, and the have been adorning our cards since the 19th Century. But did you know that the Robin you see in winter may not be the same Robin that visits your garden in the summer? That is because many Robins come across the North Sea to escape colder climates there and numbers rise significantly in the UK whilst ‘our’ Robins may move slightly southwards with some crossing over the English Channel. For this reason, you may see more Robins around in winter than at any other time of year. Our feeding stations and woodland trails make great places to spot them if you do come for a walk. After your walk, visit the visitor centre for a hot drink, sandwich, or snack, or browse our shop for Christmas gifts for a loved one, a pair of binoculars for yourself, or to stock up on your bird feeding supplies. We have a few events coming for the New Year: families can participate in our Bird Bingo self-led trail; this costs £3.50 per activity pack and will run for January. Not forgetting our adult visitors, are you looking to enhance your bird identification skills? Then we have the event for you, ‘Birds for Beginners,’ on 22nd January. (Please book online) Please note that the visitor centre will be closed on the 25th & 26th December and the 1st & 2nd January. For further info, please contact us at 01505 842663 or lochwinnoch@ rspb.org.uk We are also on Facebook @RSPBLochwinnochNR and X, formally known as Twitter @RSPBLochwinnoch.

Santa’s reindeer were supposed to be helping him out by finding out what some of the wildlife at RSPB Lochwinnoch would like for Christmas but have got themselves lost! We need your help to see if you can find the reindeer and complete the list of presents for Santa. As you explore our woodland trail, see if you can spot any of the missing reindeer whilst keeping an eye out for some of our special wildlife creatures that will tell you what they’re hoping to get as presents! Find all the reindeer and complete the wish list for presents and we’ll give you a special reward for completing it! Available daily throughout December while the visitor centre is open.

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society Kilmacolm Horticultural Society enjoyed a Christmas themed evening at end of November, linking stories, music, floral table arrangements, and a grand Christmas raffle, ending with mince pies, cake and sparkly wine refreshments. The brief AGM that followed reported on a year of happy activities. A wide range of lectures this year have been well supported; the pre-coronation coffee morning and plant sale in early May was a real highlight; topped only by the annual Flower Show exhibiting a record number of quality flowers/vegetables in September. Thank you to all our members, to guest visitors, to the speakers who lead the lectures. Thank you to the Cargill community centre who give us tremendous support for each event. We take a break in December, but we wish you all a very merry Christmas. In the New Year we switch to afternoon meetings at 2pm in the community centre. Wednesday 17th January we pay a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show. On 21st February Sharon Gemmell will highlight the new Community Food network scheme which works towards zero wastage from food grown and distributed locally, plus a new education and community hub for the grounds of Parklea nurseries on the edge of the Clyde. News and photographs can be found on our website: www.kilmacolmhorticulturalsociety. com. Happy Christmas!

by Rona Simpson ///Thatched.Imply. Remit

This is a lovely walk taking in two glens of ancient woodland, a stately home and a 16th century bridge. Two get to your start point travel down the dual carriageway to Inverkip from Greenock, take the turning that says Loch Thom. Travel a few minutes down the track, past Dunrod Farm to the junction where there is space to park. Once out of the car, take the road going gently downhill. In a few hundred yards you will pass the bridge known locally as the ‘Roman Bridge’. It’s a lovely looking, single span ‘pack-horse’ bridge built in 16th or 17th century – so not actually Roman, but it a category B listed building nonetheless. You will notice a footpath on your right. Follow this downhill. Before you get to the railway, hop into the field and join the core path which will lead you to the bridge over the railway. Next take the path on the right and follow this down through Dunrod Glen. In winter this glen is often roaring with the water in full spate. Follow the path down to Bankfoot Farm. (It was originally the dairy unit for Ardgowan Estate. Plans exist to turn this area into the Ardgowan Distillery). At the back of the distillery is an underpass. Sometimes this can be flooded so ensure you have the correct footwear. Follow the path through the woodland on the other side to the road where you can then cross into the Ardgowan Estate. The Estate has been in the Stewart, now Shaw-Stewart family since the 15th century and has a rich and varied history. Surrounded by ancient woodland, it is worth exploring. Follow the driveway down keeping in line with the road then up towards the

main house. Either extend your walk by entering the woodlands of the estate or follow the driveways out again to exit near the marina. Turn left and follow the road to the overpass. Pass over this and follow signposts to Daff Glen. Follow this pretty glen up through the wonderful ancient woodland until you pass the viaduct. Follow the path to the left, until you come out at Langhouse Road. Cross this road and take the road that skirts the bottom of Square Wood until it meets Millhouse Road. Follow this back to the junction with Dunrod Road, where you left your car. Dark Arts at Dunrod In the 17th century Inverkip was a hotbed of witch trials and accusations. Many vulnerable women were persecuted. Legend has it, local landowner Alexander Dunrod fell penniless, and as a result became enamoured with the black arts in the hope of restoring his fortunes. Being male, he was not put to death, but instead immortalised in verse. “In Auld Kirk the witches ride thick And in Dunrod they dwell; But the greatest loon amang them a’ Is Auld Dunrod himsel’.”

Start/Finish: Dunrod Road/Millhouse Road Junction Points of interest: Roman Bridge, Ancient Woodland, Ardgowan House/Estate

Distance: 6.8km Difficulty rating: Easy with steep sections within the glens refreshments: Cafés within Marina or at Inverkip Hotel

Lochwinnoch Community Garden Lochwinnoch Community Garden had a slippery visitor over the summer! ‘Wigglesworth’, a 6 feet long Earthworm, moved into the garden as part of the ‘Lochwinnoch’s Feel Good Festival’, a two week long programme of events aiming to connect people with the village and beyond, in a celebration promoting health and wellbeing. ‘Wigglesworth’ was part of the ‘Earth Beneath our Feet’ initiative: a clue solving arts trail cedlebrating all things slimy - worms, slugs, snails, perfect for all kids, big and small, highlighting the importance of our underground eco-systems. Young Wigglesworth attracted many visitors to the community garden, all in search of our slippery guest. The garden was more than happy to welcome the merry band of friendly worm hunters. The volunteers at the community Garden became very fond of our guest who sometimes hid in the raised beds and sometimes in the veg patches... we just never knew where he’d pop up next. The volunteers and visitors to the garden have been reassured he’s snuggled away in a massive wormery until next year - or is he?

HOWWOOD WILDLIFE & WOODLANDS At the AGM for HWW on Tuesday 31st October, held in The Boarding House across from the Rhombus Garden, the Chairman summarised the work carried out by the volunteers over the past year and thanked them for their continued support. Following on from a previous commitment to plant bulbs for next Spring in a grassed area across from the triangle, a group of volunteers met there on Wednesday 8th November and planted 300 daffodil bulbs to provide colour there next Spring. In addition the group cleared out all the tubs for the Winter with the plan that only two at the Rhombus and one on the main road at the East of the village will be planted up for the Winter. When all the tubs and troughs are planted up next Spring then the plan is to have watering carried out on the basis that each tub(s) will be maintained/watered by an individual volunteer to ensure that, given another hot summer all tubs will be kept watered.

The Christmas Jigsaw Murders All The President’s Men Book Review The Christmas Jigsaw Murders is a deliciously dark thriller by the bestselling author of Murder on the Christmas Express, Alexandra Benedict. A week before Christmas, Edie O’Sullivan finds a handdelivered present on her doorstep. She unwraps it to discover a jigsaw puzzle and an anonymous note. When completed, the jigsaw puzzle shows part of a grisly crime scene and the accompanying note reads ‘Four, maybe more, people will be dead by midnight on Christmas Eve, unless you can put all the pieces together and stop me.’ Luckily for Edie, she loves puzzles – as does her nephew Sean, a police detective. As the body count rises, Edie and Sean must work together to solve the clues, work out the identity of the killer and stop them before they strike again… This is a wonderfully thrilling novel that will have you turning its pages into the wee, small hours and will keep you guessing right until the very end. There are also some fiendishly clever, but completely optional, puzzles that the author has added to the story for the reader to solve (e.g. 16 Fleetwood Mac song titles hidden in the text of the story) – don’t worry though, the answers are at the back! All in all, The Christmas Jigsaw Murders is the perfect read in the lead up to Christmas for fans of mysteries, puzzles and thrillers. Pick up your copy now at The Ginger Cat Bookshop in Bridge of Weir.

Duchal Nursery Thank you to all those that supported our Children in Need coffee morning, a great cause and lovely to welcome families into the nursery, the children loved playing hosts! We are also collecting Christmas gifts for underprivileged children, giving us a great opportunity to discuss with the children how important it is to help others and do what we are able for the local community. Ship Ahoy – there’s been a pirate extravaganza at Duchal with the arrival of a new pirate ship in the garden. The children have a had a wonderful time exploring the decks, checking the rigging and searching for treasure while keeping watch for other passing ships. What a superb space for them to use their imaginations, make special memories and have so much fun, the real essence of Duchal life! Excitement is building towards the festive season with Christmas decorations being created (and glitter everywhere) and preparations are well under way for our annual Nativity. Applications for free funded places for August 2024 will be issued early in the New Year so please do get in touch if you would like to apply. The nursery is now open 8am – 6pm each day offering quality specialist pre school care for all 3 – 5yr olds. More info at www.duchal.com

Barrhead St. Andrew’s Church was where seventeen young men gathered to be awarded their well-earned President’s Badges the second highest award in The Boy’s Brigade. Each young man having qualified by gaining their company badges plus attending a non-residential weekend as well as completing ten hours of practical service for others. Rev. Steven Henderson Battalion spoke to the President’s Men of being ‘a credit to themselves, their families and their communities being based on a sure foundation which are now steadfast for the future’. Training and Development Officer Stewart Digney told parents and friends of the achievement these young men had gained and the challenge ahead of them next year as they work towards their King’s Badge involving the ‘Challenge in New Horizons’ (a weekend residential course) plus a minimum of thirty hours community service. Some of the previous men who achieved the award gave over ninety hours of service to care homes and other charities. Over the last year in the UK young men in the BB gave over 75,000 hours of service to others in their communities. In addressing the President’s Men Col. Peter McCarthy, Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire told them, ‘...they are now the role models for the next generation both in the Brigade and in their communities’. A spokesman commented, ‘We look forward to the contribution these ‘role models’ will make to their Renfrewshire Communities in giving their time and efforts to others in their challenge to reach the next level – achieving their King’s Badges in 2024’. They are indeed men of the future!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas from all at Duchal Nursery.

St Columba’s School Early Years: Even with the weather getting colder, the Early Years children have been enjoying time outside both in the garden and in the Wild Woodies - there is so much for them to see and learn as the seasons change! The children are making the most of their puddle suits so that nothing can stop them exploring.

#TalkaGoodGame: On Thursday 12th October, we hosted #TalkaGoodGame, a day-long event which brought together SIII boys from 8 schools to enjoy a day of rugby and mental health workshops.

Junior 6 Transitions: Moving from Junior School to Senior School can be a daunting prospect, but our Junior 6 classes have been spending time in Senior School with their class teachers to familiarise them with their new surroundings and make their move up to Transitus (our Primary 7, which forms a part of the Senior School) next year as smooth as possible. The first of these days has been a big hit with our Junior 6 pupils and prospectus pupils for Transitus – particularly getting to go to the canteen for hot chocolate at break!

As well as taking part in touch and contact rugby matches, the boys got to listen to a variety of guest speakers, including former professional Scottish footballer Andy McLaren who spoke about his experiences with drugs and gambling and Jordan Daly, the co-founder of the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) charity, who spoke about sexuality and homophobic language.

This event, led by Mr Houston and the SVI Mental Health Ambassadors, was designed to destigamtise mental health amongst young men, as well as providing them with positive role models and signposting them to the appropriate help should they need it.

This was a hugely positive day, and we look forward to holding a similar event for SIII girls based around hockey later in the academic year. Want to experience St Columba’s for yourself? Ren96 Swimming Club – West District REN96 swimmers’ hard work is clearly paying off as the club excelled at the West District championship. Saturday 21st October saw 20 of REN96’s younger swimmers head to Tollcross to compete in 73 events, achieving 47 Personal Best (PB) times and winning 9 Gold, 7 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. Lead Coach Alan Dickson said “It’s great that the early season effort is being translated into results, with so many PBs. There were some brilliant individual performances, but our 11 year olds Ella and Rhys who both tackled 400m freestyle for the first time did a great job. Also Jack’s 1500m freestyle was a brilliant effort - in setting a PB he beat his 200m, 400m and 800m PBs - hard to beat! Medals are great for the swimmers but every swimmer at Tollcross learnt something they will be able to use next time they compete. This is a great springboard for what is to come.” REN96’s senior swimmers took things to another level on Sunday at Tollcross, with top swimmers, along with Head Coach Ross McCaffert, having returned the night before from a week long training camp, where swimmers each swam 77,000 metres.

Saturday’s team and coaches Ross McCafferty, Alan Dickson and Heather Allan

Ross said “It’s not about times today - it’s about building on specific skills we worked on last week.” Joining the top squad were some of the club’s age group swimmers - 15 swimmers took part in 40 events, achieving 15 PBs and winning 9 medals. Lead coach Alan Dickson gave a special “well done” to age groupers Ada and Matthew who took on the 800m freestyle for the first time. Sunday’s action was expertly commentated on by REN96’s Magnus, who had been asked by West District to act as MC for the day. Team success like this wouldn’t happen without a team of helpers - thanks to Lindsay, Michelle, Callum, Rihanna and Angela for helping. The second weekend of this double header was held in November - watch out for more REN96 success. If you’d like to find out about how to join REN96 please visit the club’s website at https://uk.teamunify.com/team/ren96/page/home.

Birkmyre - Next League Match Saturday 11th November Birkmyre welcomed Mid Argyll to Kilmacolm for their return league fixture. Back in early Sept, Birkmyre travelled to Oban and defeated their opponents 43-10 in the first match of the season, although this was Mid Argyll’s inaugural league match back in the West League structure.

Santa’s Sleigh . . .

For full details of his expected whereabouts visit page 8!!

Birkmyre has more or less a full squad to choose from and will be hoping to consolidate their place at the top of the league. They currently sit top on 31 points, two points clear of their closest rivals Irvine, but also have a game in hand and a superior points difference. Mid Argyll had a slow start to their campaign, but have picked up a couple of wins recently to help them climb the table.

Ranfurly Castle Ladies The onset of winter weather has been upsetting the ladies, with quite a few wet Wednesdays, which has curtailed the amount of golf being played. That has not prevented the enjoyment of coffee and chat in the clubhouse instead! Over the winter season all members are welcome to play on Wednesday mornings. Just add your name to any booking where there is a space and have a fun bounce game. The final competitions of the year were played at the end of October. The Winter Greensomes Stableford on 11th October, won by Jan Macnab and Karen Binning with 38 points and the 12 hole Final Swing played on 18th October with the winner, once again, Jan Macnab with an amazing Stableford score of 32 points. Congratulations to the Ladies Team playing in the West Renfrewshire League who have had a convincing win in Division One. The Team organiser, Helen Abram, was presented with the Trophy at the West Ren AGM. The Annual Ladies Dinner was held in the Club on Wednesday 25th October when 49 ladies enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, chat and a presentation from Leigh Maybury, a Lifestyle Specialist. She gave the members tips on personal colours and how to make the best of this information when choosing items for their wardrobe. Finally, the Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association held it’s AGM on 1st November at Haggs Castle Golf Club. This proved the point that Jan Macnab has had a very successful year of golf and, along with Allison Murray, she won the County Greensomes which was played at Gourock Golf Club - seen here with their Trophy. She also won the County Tri-am played at Cathcart Castle with Joy McLeod, Ranfurly Castle members making up 2/3 of the team! The Christmas Party night will be held at the Club on Saturday 9th December with the Children’s party and a visit from Santa on the 10th December. The Club would like to wish all members and Staff a very Happy Christmas and look forward to a successful golfing year in 2024.

What an (E) Waste!

by Rona Simpson

If you’re anything like my family, you’ll have a few old mobile phones stuffed in drawers gathering dust and maybe the odd ancient laptop taking up space in the bottom of a wardrobe. The climate guilt is pressing, so I don’t consider landfill. So, what should we do with this old tech that has reached the end of its life? I decided to do a deep dive into e-waste and the discoveries were frightening. 1.45 million tonnes of electrical waste is produced by UK households and businesses each year – according to recent research by e-waste research company, Material Focus. The annual cost to the UK in lost recycling potential in metals such as gold, copper, aluminium and steel is estimated at £370m. But it’s not just old phones and laptops, many other smaller items are considered e-waste – such as cables, USB sticks, decorative lights, novelty clothes, headphones and vapes. A staggering 9.5 billion kilograms of these items are thrown away worldwide each year. The average cost of these items is around £4, which makes them feel disposable, but all of them have elements which could be recovered through a recycling process. Our appetite for new tech continues to rise, but continuing to mine for the precious elements needed to build it poses many social and environmental problems. The price of lithium – a main battery component - has rocketed by 500% due to geopolitical unrest and supply chain jitters. 80% of cobalt – a vital component of lithium batteries – is found in the Congo. Pollution and habitat destruction as a result of cobalt mining is well-documented. Reports have confirmed that child labour is being used in many unregulated and unsafe mines in the region – these should be massive red flags to the big tech companies that drive this market. Other vital elements used in tech, including tech for cancer care, are simply running out due to our constant mining of the earth. Moving to a more circular economy would stop this rush to the bottom. A positive move has come from tech giant Apple, who have created a robot called Daisy which takes apart iphones and extracts the elements for recycling. Only two Daisys exist – one in a recycling centre in the Netherlands and one in Texas, USA. And there are currently around 1.46 billion active iphone users worldwide. Also the Circular Electronics Partnership (CEP) made up of tech companies such as Dell, Microsoft and Google have pledged to make their companies more sustainable

through recycling of components, but if we have any chance of reducing our e-waste, emissions and societal issues/harms, more needs to be done at a local level and at a faster pace. Recycling our old tech should not be complicated. Local government should provide services that allow safe collections of small electrical goods which then get processed for parts. More shops should offer incentives such as cash-back and vouchers in exchange for old phones and laptops to encourage shoppers back to the high street, and companies such as Amazon should take far greater end-of-life responsibility for products sold on their platforms. Tech companies should commit to the removal of personal data once a product has reached the end of its usefulness – a key aspect holding people back from recycling their old phones and computers. Some of this is happening, but not enough of it and not everywhere. So, before we buy our loved ones new phones, laptops or gaming platforms this Christmas please consider buying second hand or refurbished. And if you wish to recycle those dusty laptops and phones languishing in cupboards, look out for our next issue where we will explore the best places to take these unwanted items. Meanwhile here are two websites which may help you get started in your e-waste recycling journey. https://www.recycleyourelectricals.org.uk/ https://sustainability.rsc.org/

Renfrewshire Winter Connections programme returns Developed by local community groups and organisations with Renfrewshire Council, and including OneRen libraries, the programme provides free fun activities and events open to everyone where people can get a warm welcome, come together, make friends and build community connection. Every Winter Connections venue will offer people refreshments. All activities will be listed on www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/winter-connections and this webpage will be continually updated as new activities come onto the programme. The programme currently includes movie afternoons, cooking sessions, arts and crafts, family gaming, circus activities, exercise and fitness classes, music, dancing and singing, community choir, cheerleading and other fun activities for young people, activities in OneRen libraries, and much more to be added to the programme shortly. Groups and organisations who can offer a community venue, run an activity, or want to open up their existing activities to more people can still apply to the council’s £85,000 Winter Connections Fund. Part of

46 40-47 SCHOOLS + SPORTS 343 DECEMBER 2023 A4.indd 46

the funding for this year’s programme comes from the Recovery Change Fund and the council is looking for groups supporting people in recovery or those living with mental ill-health running activities over the festive period to also apply for Winter Connections funding. Councillor Jacqueline Cameron, depute leader of Renfrewshire Council and chair of the Fairer Renfrewshire sub-committee, said: “Winter Connections is all about community and bringing people together to connect during the winter months. “We have a variety of fun, welcoming activities open to everyone listed on the council website, and this list will continue to expand as more local groups and organisations get involved. “If you are part of a group who can support an activity in your local area, I would encourage you to look at applying.”

The 2023 event, held on 21st May, was sponsored by the Bridge of Weir based Scottish Leather Group and the Malcolm Group. It was a great success with 159 runners completing the challenging course. Organised as part of Gryffe Valley’s ongoing community activities, the run also raised funds for a charity nominated by club members; this year’s charity being CHAS, Children’s Hospices Across Scotland. The Club also organised, for the first time, a Kids 2K Fun Run in Houston Park as a prelude to the main event. Over 40 children (aged 3 to 10) participated and were rewarded with CHAS tee-shirts. At their weekly meeting in the Fox and Hounds Houston, members of the Gryffe Valley Rotary Club, together with representatives of the sponsors, presented a cheque for £4750 to Cara Bowden, CHAS Community Fundraiser. The 2024 event will be held over the same course on 19th May; so make this your New Year resolution!
