Lochwinnoch Gala Day Gala Day will take place on Saturday 14th June 2014. Preparations for this event are now in full swing and this year’s theme is “Commonwealth Games”. The day will start with the traditional parade from Auld Simon, starting at 12.30pm and proceeding through the streets to the Public Park. It’s hoped that St Columba’s School Pipe Band will lead the procession, as they were very popular last year. In the next few weeks, details regarding the parade, the making of costumes, etc will be going out to parents in the local area. In the meantime, if you have a child of primary school age, living in the Lochwinnoch catchment area, and would like your child to take part in the parade, then please register your interest by contacting Gala Day Convenor, Jane Owens details provided below. Simply provide your name, the child’s name and your contact details. The parade is open to all children of primary school age, irrespective of the school they attend. Children taking part in the parade must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who will be responsible for their child’s safety. On arrival at the park, there will be an afternoon of live music, dancing, arena events, football, funfair shows, variety of stalls, snacks, refreshments, ice cream and much more. Lochwinnoch Fun Run, start and finish will take place in the Public Park and there will be plenty for all the family to enjoy on the day. Hurry, if you would like a memento of last year’s event, photographs are available on CD by application to Jane Owens (details given below). In addition, a CD of Gala Day 2014 will also be compiled and can be purchased from Jane after this year’s event. Finally, it’s always good to have the help and support of local people on Gala Day. If you would like to volunteer some time to assist the team on the day, then please get in touch with Jane. Many hands make light work, so help us put on a great show again this year. I have been advising David Blair and the Kilbarchan Scout Troop in relation to the clearing of the area around the very popular Scout Hut, and assisting them to liaise with council officers in relation to the same project. I was also very pleased to recently attend the 40th anniversary Burns Supper of the Kilbarchan General Society, and very good it was too, and a fine tribute to the National Bard. Lochwinnoch constituents are extremely annoyed at a decision by the current administration in Renfrewshire to transfer the current Librarian at Lochwinnoch Library. I have met with the Head of Libraries to tell him so. I believe there is a petition circulating in Lochwinnoch to tell the Council Hands Off our Librarian, and I will certainly be signing it. Renfrewshire Council has set its new budget for the year. The Street scene budget is being cut so that street cleaning in Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan will be even worse than it has been over the last two years, and there is a massive 10% hike in cemetery charges. £2 million has been put into heritage tourism in Paisley alone but no budget or commitments for heritage tourism for villages like Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm. M advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm, excluding July. I am also available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224, or email: cllr.andy.doig@renfrewshire.gov.uk.

With sadness and sympathy Andrew Dempster, known to most of us as Drew, will be sadly missed. He served, as a member and Secretary, on Kilbarchan Community Council for many years. He was a founder member and Director of Kilbarchan Improvement Projects who gave many hours of his time assisting in the setting up of The Old Library Centre. Drew’s input to discussions was always valued. He had very positive ideas which he expressed without taking offence if the group did not agree with him. Drew received an M.B.E. for his services to Victim Support Scotland, an organisation which he passionately supported, attending conferences in many countries, speaking regularly to meetings of young people and latterly was the chairman of the Paisley Area Committee. Our sympathy goes to his family.
