Putting a bit aside for our next adventure There are so many places to go, things to see, adventures to have. Whether it’s a day at the funfair or a week away, we’re here to help you afford it. Johnstone Credit Union was set up back in the 1970s by a group of friends and neighbours to help local people with savings and loans they could afford. Today, it still exists to help its members in Renfrewshire save for the future and borrow what they need. As a not-for-profit organisation, profits are paid back to our members in the form of a dividend. It could be a dream holiday, driving lessons, a big birthday, a wedding, first home or even getting ready for a new baby. Whatever you’re planning, Johnstone Credit Union can help make it a reality. Head to our website to find out more and become a member today: www.johnstonecu.co.uk/momentsthatmatter Johnstone Credit Union. Helping you plan for the moments that matter.

‘The Ripple Effect’ Attracts Famous Faces to Bernies Cafe Two of Scotland’s best loved actors are heading to Bernies café in Bridge of Weir this month to help launch ‘The Ripple Effect’ – a book by Anna Deacon and Vicky Allan explaining the activity of wild swimming – a phenomenon which has taken the UK by storm.

Provost Cameron opens search for inspirational community heroes

Greg Hemphill (Still Game) and Julie Wilson Nimmo (Scot Squad) have recently finished filming their own series about wild swimming and were only too happy to join forces with authors, Anna and Vicky, to spread the word of this increasingly popular hobby.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron is searching for community heroes as nominations open for the 2024 Provost’s Community Awards. Extraordinary employees and superlative sportspeople are among those being sought as the awards recognise the people who make Renfrewshire a better place to live, work and visit. There are five categories available to nominate in and these are: • • • •

We caught up with Greg and he said: “We can’t wait to dive in with Anna and Vicky about their new book. Their past books are bibles in our house and we are looking forward to a great night.”

Wild swimming has become a wave, a movement rippling across different sections of society. From those recovering from illness and addiction, to followers of the Wim Hoff method, to curious amateurs – just about everyone seems to be getting involved! Benefits are said to be numerous; from improving mental health to helping your cardiovascular system and increasing bone density. Why not come along and find out what all the fuss is about. It’s going to be a fantastic evening and you’ll have the chance to ask Anna and Vicky any questions you might have about their book and wild swimming. Their books will be available to purchase on the night and Anna and Vicky will be signing them. When: 18th November Where: Bernies Café, Bridge of Weir Tickets are available here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/717943176367

Community Volunteer (sponsored by Glasgow Airport Ltd) Community Group (sponsored by City Gate Construction) Sport Award (sponsored by ACRE Industrial Services) Employee of the Year (sponsored by UNISON Renfrewshire) Arts and Culture Award (sponsored by Renfrewshire Council)

Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “The Community Awards nomination period is always one of the highlights of my year because I get to hear about all the fantastic achievements and work taking place in communities across Renfrewshire. “These awards are the perfect opportunity for you to put forward those who go above and beyond and who often go unrecognised for their efforts. I can’t wait to read your nominations, so don’t miss out on the chance to nominate and start getting them in now.” Deadline for entries to all categories is Friday 5th January 2024 The Provost will be joined by the award sponsors and other local elected members to choose the winners who will be invited, along with their nominator, to the awards ceremony in March 2024. For more information, and to submit your nomination, visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/provostawards2024 or email provostawards@renfrewshire.gov.uk

Cala Homes Move to Submit Planning Application Developers Cala Homes are looking to submit a planning application this month (Nov) for around 70 new homes at Barrhill Crescent in Kilbarchan. There have been four consultations so far. The final consultation took place on 27th of October, however at time of writing the results of this were yet to be consolidated. At the first consultation, when asked if residents thought there was a need for new homes in Kilbarchan 66% answered ‘No’. Only 26% answered ‘Yes’ and the remaining 8% ‘Didn’t know’. There has been significant push back from some local residents. Concerns ranged from pressures on road infrastructure and volume of traffic, problems around parking and flood risks. Many mentioned a loss of ‘sense of place’ which may result from a significant expansion of this rural village – which exists in a designated Conservation Area and others were worried about the reduction of greenspace and the knock-on effect on wildlife habitats and ecology. However, the inclusion of 18 affordable homes has impressed others. One resident explained: “The building of Cala homes is different to the previous built estates in the village as they are including 18 ‘social houses’ (rented accommodation). What a great opportunity for young families to be able to live in Kilbarchan who are unable to buy a flat/house.” Road infrastructure was the single largest theme of concern at the second consultation. The junction at Low Barholm has traffic going through at high speeds and the steepness of Barrhill Crescent is a concern. Suggestions included speed calming measures and widening of roads. Cala have committed to including plans which will widen Barrhill Crescent by 6m, which they say will improve the visibility towards Low Barholm Junction. There are significant pressures in Kilbarchan regarding available parking and volumes of traffic at peak times. Cala Homes have altered designs to incorporate an additional access road to minimise this impact. One resident said: “This 2nd vehicle access requirement is ridiculous! Anyone who knows the village would know that Cunningham Road is very narrow and one side has parked vehicles 24/7, therefore the roadway leaves one lane for driving.” Another resident responded: “At a recent public consultation the plans showed parking spaces located part of the way up Barrhill Crescent. When you live here you know that you can’t get up Barrhill Cresent in the winter if it’s icy or snowing, unless you’ve got a 4x4, so where do the residents park that have lost their spaces?” Residents, especially those living nearby, have expressed grave concerns that the development will lead to an increase in surface water which could increase flooding to gardens which are already badly affected in heavy rainfall. Cala responded with reference to the sustainable drainage system (SUDS) included with the plans and have indicated that a flood risk assessment carried out shows low risk of flooding. The debate continues. If you wish to comment on this planning application you can do here https://pl-bs.renfrewshire.gov.uk/online-applications/ or in writing to: Development Standards Team, Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire House, Cotton Street, Paisley, PA3 9UW.

Gibb Stuart’s announcement The Gibb Stuart family have announced that they are looking for a new buyer for their well known and loved local business, W Gibb Stuart - Home Hardware in Bridge of Weir. Director, Katherine Gibb-Stuart told the Advertizer: “We are very sad to announce that after 142 years of trading in Bridge of Weir, Kilmacolm and surrounding areas that we have decided to sell our shop in Bridge of Weir with the hope it can be carried on as a hardware store under new ownership and management. “It has been our greatest privilege to be part of these communities and to enjoy the support of all our customers and staff over the years and we hope whoever is fortunate to take over the business will continue to hold such high standards in regards to serving our local community and loyal customer base. “We thank you for your continued support of the business and hope you show the new owners as much loyalty as you have us. For now, it’s business as usual.” Gibb Stuart’s has been such a staple part of village life for so long and their wonderful Christmas window displays have been a much enjoyed annual event. We at The Advertizer hope the family enjoys their retirement from the retail business and that whoever takes over will aspire to provide the same great service we have enjoyed for decades.

The Highland Mountain Monsters take on the Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail is one of the most awe-inspiring trails in America. It is also one of the toughest. Hiking the trail takes between four and six months. This is the challenge that brothers Chris (32) and Jack Murphy (29) from Bridge of Weir have set themselves to raise money for Diabetes UK. The cause is close to the brothers’ hearts. Both of the boys have family members affected and Jack is also Type 1 diabetic. They call themselves the Highland Mountain Monsters. Spanning 2650.10 miles from the Mexican border to the Canadian border through the most varied terrain you can imagine including the heat of deserts, to the snows of the Sierra Mountains, this trail is not for the feint hearted. We caught up with the boys via email – finding them on the last stretch of the trail and asked about the highs and lows. Chris wrote back, “Keeping his insulin from freezing or getting too hot, making sure his blood sugar levels remain in a safe zone when hiking every day, making sure he has enough to eat and doesn’t get blisters infected – these are all concerns.” Jack added, “The Sierra Mountains are the most beautiful but also the most challenging. I have found this hike so much more difficult than I ever thought I would, but doing it alongside Chris has kept me going.”

Page 8 04-09 FEATURES 342 NOVEMBER 2023 A4.indd 8

Each day the boys pack up their tent, hike for almost 30 miles then cook up ‘Ramon Bomb’ – their hiking delicacy of instant noodles and ‘smash’ potatoes mixed with hot sauce. They then set up the tents and blow up beds – which need pumped up every 40 minutes due to punctures, then try to grab some sleep. Then repeat the whole thing the next day – all the while taking in the most incredible views, meeting other hikers, sharing stories, making memories and, maybe most importantly, raising lots of money for their favourite charity – Diabetes UK. Although at time of writing, the boys are on the final leg, they have been hit by a few challenges. Recently, a bad storm blew up which meant they had to drop down 5,000 feet into Yosemite National Park until it passed. Now back on the trail the challenges continue. The high Sierras include daily climbs of 6,000ft and temperatures plummet to -10 each evening. Completing this trail will be a true test of resilience and determintation. Please show your support for this incredible, gruelling adventure by donating to their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/page/2650miles

Village News

Next Deadline... #343 December 2023: 15th November

Bridge of Weir Community Council With the Main Street closed for Scottish Waters million-pound project to tackle sewer flooding, the Community Council has been approached by local businesses highlighting the potential adverse impact the closure could have on their revenues in the run up to Christmas as a result of reduced passing trade. The Community Council will work with our local Councillors and Renfrewshire Council to find ways of supporting the local business community at this difficult time. However, we would also like to highlight the following to local residents: ALL the shops and restaurants will be open for business during the road closure period. Given recent shop closures it is more important than ever that local residents support local businesses to ensure their ongoing viability. The Main Street closure will mean that the centre of the village will essentially be traffic free, potentially enhancing the shopping/dining experience for people in and around the Main Street in the run up to Christmas. Please Support Your Local Businesses! Ann McNaughton Renfrewshire Council’s Lead Community Council Officer chaired the inaugural meeting of the new Community Council. Ann welcomed the new Council however she stated with only seven members being elected (the minimum number required to establish a Community Council in Bridge of Weir) there was a heightened risk that the Community Council would become unviable if just one member decided to leave. She recommended that the Community Council seek additional members. A Community Council member will oversee a recruitment campaign. The Community Council are grateful to Hope Hall for volunteering to organize this year’s Christmas Lights switch on. Date for your diary - Tuesday 28th November: Carol Service - 6pm; Hope Hall Switch On - Livery Walk - 6.30pm; Santa in the Coach House Grotto - 6.45 pm. The next meeting of the Community Council will be Tuesday 7th November in the Cargill Hall at 7pm.

Friday 1st December, Main Street, Houston. Join us from 5pm for festive fun from our DJ and compère, music from local schools, raffles and even an appearance from Santa himself! The switch on of the Christmas Lights will be followed by a fireworks display. Thanks to support from The Houston Inn and The Fox & Hounds and sponsorship from many local businesses, without whom this event simply could not take place (please see local posters and social media for details). Please note, Main Street in Houston will be closed from 4pm – 8pm between the Fox & Hounds and the Houston Inn. Parking will be restricted in the village, but overflow parking for the event will be available in Houston Primary School and Gryffe High School car parks. Hope to see you there!

Houston & Killellan Kirk We had a great response to our appeal for warm winter clothing for babies, children and young people of all ages, in support of the work that charity Barnardo’s Threads does. Many thanks to everyone who handed in items. They will be delivered to Threads, a Family Support Service based in Paisley who work with young parents across Renfrewshire, helping them give their children the best start in life. Threads will be able to distribute the warm clothing to those who are most in need of it. This month we are collecting Christmas gifts for prisoners’ children, for CrossReach, who run a visitors’ support service at HMP Perth and a visitors’ centre family hub at HMYOI Polmont. Many of the children of prisoners have very little and, at Christmas time especially, they can often feel left out. CrossReach prison visitor service aims to provide a gift at Christmas for each of the children it comes into contact with. This is where our donations of new clothing, toys, crafts, small Lego sets, pens and pencils, books, trucks/cars, dolls, Play-Doh, jigsaws or jewellery and toiletry gift sets for older children, come in. Gifts (unwrapped, in open gift bags please) can be handed in to our Foodbank Collection Point from November 21st – or brought along to our Christmas Gift Service at 11am on December 10th. Looking ahead, we are delighted to host the ever-popular Bearsden Fiddlers once again on November 18th and the Guild Christmas Market on November 25th is an excellent opportunity to get your Christmas shopping done early! Regular events include our Foodbank Collection and the Wee Blether every Tuesday, the Men’s Shed on Wednesdays, Houston Hello on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month, Toddlers (also on Thursdays) and Sunday Club for children, at 10.50am in the Kirk each week.

ward 10 cllr audrey doig Over the last month I have been privileged to attend some of the AGM’s of our local community councils, who have been re-electing their office-bearers for the next five years. I commend each and every individual person who seeks to serve their local area in this way, they are a vital conduit to liaise with Renfrewshire Council on a whole host of key local matters, from bus schedules, to planning applications, to Christmas Lights switch on’s. I recently stockpiled the summer clothes and dragged out the woolie jerseys as it is definitely getting colder. The current administration is very mindful of the need to support all our citizens through the winter period and so Renfrewshire Council has brought out its new Winter Connections Programme. This is a series of local events in local halls where community groups are funded by Renfrewshire Council to provide tea, coffee and company, both to reduce social isolation and to provide events where people can stay warm and get together. I cannot stress enough how important these issues are and to complement the Winter Connections Programme - I strongly advise any constituents who are struggling with energy bills to go on the Council website and contact Renfrewshire Council’s dedicated Energy Advisors. They will take the strain and liaise with utilities to resolve any energy issues which people may have. I can vouch for their effectiveness because my husband and I had cause to use them last year in relation to a gas meter problem.

Houston Hello We’ve had a great time at the Houston Hello, our dementia inclusive drop in café, over the last month. Daniela continues to lead us in regular Singing for Wellbeing sessions - great fun as Daniela gets us all singing, playing percussion instruments and moving our bodies. On 14th September Alex from Albatross Arts facilitated a wonderful art session where we all got busy creating abstract paintings and on 28th September, we were joined by some fabulous dancers from Kirsty McKay School of Dance. We were entertained with some routines they had been practising and Kirsty taught us all a dance routine that we enjoyed learning and proudly performing! If you would like to come along we meet in the West Church Halls, Main Street Houston on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 2pm - 4pm. We ask that people who have dementia are accompanied by someone who can support them if they do not have capacity to come independently, as we cannot offer any form of care support at the group.

ward 9 cllr andy doig Over the last month I have attended meetings of both Kilbarchan and Howwood Community Councils where the major topic under discussion has been the refinement of the Council’s Safe Rural Walking Initiative. This was a detailed look at comprehensive methods of curbing speeding in both villages. Suffering decades of neglect the West Renfrewshire villages were never given the kind of road safety improvements they deserved and speeding complaints have always featured at the top of my civic postbag. In the run up to the 2022/23 Budget I lobbied the Council Leader and we were determined this would change, hence the SRWI. The two Community Councils have come up with amendments to the original plans and to their credit the council officers have listened closely and taken them on board. By early 2024 the first of these road safety initiatives should be put in place in Kilbarchan and Howwood and will be phased in over a three-year period. At the 2023 Budget, given the success of the initial pilot, I lobbied for a second tranche of villages to be included in the SRWI and Lochwinnoch will be one of those with consultation beginning soon in the village. Still on the matter of road safety, many Lochwinnoch constituents have approached me about the high number of incidents in and around the Hole Farm section of the A760 Lochwinnoch to Kilbirnie. I have lobbied council officers and they are already putting in some remedial features to improve matters, which are very welcome. However, Police Scotland have informed me that there have been no less than 15 incidents at this small section in the last year. I have now asked the Council to examine the road surface itself to see if there is an issue.

Surgeries: Second Wednesday of the month at 6.30pm, Lilybank Bowling Club, Johnstone, and 7.30pm the Old Library, Kilbarchan. On the fourth Wednesday of the month they are at 6.30pm, Howwood Bowling Club and then at 7.30pm in Lochwinnoch Bowling Club.

Howwood Community Council October’s AGM saw the start of another positive period of activity for Howwood Community Council with the opportunity to welcome a few new members from our village. During the AGM and the normal monthly meeting afterwards, we covered a few of the actions we had been successful in over the past year and a few of the plans for the area which we have had an influence in. These included: The Howwood Hall: In February ‘22 we raised the need for the hall to be brought up to a reasonable standard. It may not be evident yet, but slowly improvements are being made and hopefully will continue to be. Senior Citizens Afternoon Teas: We had two very successful afternoon teas this year, both thoroughly enjoyed by all. Howwood Fete: Our beer tent continued to be an important part of the fete. Christmas Lights Switch-on: Again, a great community event which lights up the village and a few faces, especially the children’s with the visit by Santa. Defibrillator at Midton Bowling Club: A welcome addition to our defibs at important positions in the village, some of which have been used effectively. Safer Roads Initiative (Speeding and Safety): Starting over the next few months, various measures will be installed to cut down speeding and improve safety in Howwood. Winter Warm Spaces: Two regular weekly winter events under this banner to provide a warm space, warm drinks, food and company for all. We will continue these this winter. We are always looking for new faces and fresh ideas so if you feel you can help in any small way, why not come along to any of our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in Howwood Hall. You would be very welcome. Howwood is looking good.

cllr gillian graham November brings bonfires and fireworks. I’m not fan of fireworks, however I know many are and I support the advice of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service - if you enjoy fireworks please attend an organised public firework display. If you organise your own garden display make the firework code your first port of call. Sadly, it is often children who are injured by fireworks, ensure only adults handle fireworks and children watch from a safe distance. I’d also like to make a plea to remember neighbours and pets when using fireworks. Fireworks can be overwhelming for people with a sensory impairment and those with neurological differences such as autism. Animals can also find fireworks particularly distressing. The 11th of November is, of course, Remembrance Day when on the 11th hour we come together to remember the sacrifices of the armed forces and their families. Many of us wear a poppy commemorating this sacrifice and remembering the fallen. Scottish poppies are made at the Lady Haig Factory and this year new environmentally friendly 100% paper poppies are being produced for the first time. Last year I had the honour of laying a poppy wreath on behalf of the Council and the people of Renfrewshire at Lochwinnoch cenotaph. This year I will be spending time at ceremonies across the ward. If you live in Kilbarchan look out for surveys from Kilbarchan Smile and Kilbarchan Community Council. Following the ‘You Decide’ consultation earlier this year, they are seeking your ideas to improve the roundabout at Easwald Bank and enhance the entrance to the village. Renfrewshire Council will identify the most popular idea and commission an artist to create a design for further consultation. Kilbarchan Smile were recently awarded a local partnership grant to improve a small park area on Ewing Street. They aim to create a Heritage Garden with seating, lighting and plants linked to the villages weaving heritage. They would love to hear residents thoughts and ideas.

The care delivered by our Day Services Team will the hosted within The Hub enabling our communities across Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire access to wellbeing sessions designed to empower individuals living with life limiting illnesses to live to the fullest. People will be able to access the service at a time that suits them both in person and via our website. Thank you to everyone involved and we look forward to welcoming families”. Affluent Community Fund – support for Alzheimer’s Scotland Affluent Financial Planning Ltd, the multi award winning financial planning company based in Bridge of Weir, recently presented a cheque to Alzheimer’s Scotland to help with the valuable work they do in supporting those affected by dementia. “We were asked to provide sponsorship for a fund-raising event locally and we were delighted to offer our support to such an important charity” stated Carl Melvin, Managing Director at Affluent. There are an estimated 90,000 people with dementia in Scotland with around 3000 of those people under the age of 65 years. Dementia impacts not just the individuals affected but families, carers, and the wider community. Like all charities, Dementia Scotland needs to raise cash to continue providing valuable services to its users. The Affluent Financial Group Community Fund was set up to provide grants and financial support to small charities and local community groups in Renfrewshire, and since 2016 has paid out over £40,000 to recipients. The community fund seeks to support smaller charities and community groups who struggle to get funding but make a huge difference to their local communities. Past recipients of a grant from the Affluent Community Fund include Rays of Hope cancer support group in Elderslie, 1st Bridge of Weir Scout Group, Create Paisley, St Columba’s school pipe band, Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group and Lochwinnoch Early Learning and Childcare Centre. The community fund is open for grant applications and more information can be found at https://www.affluentfp.co.uk/community-fund , including an application form for funding.

Frank has created a database of all the architecturally important houses. This holds important information about each house, such as the architect, the builder and name changes etc. He has brought the most special of these houses to life via an audio and visual ‘digital tour’ of Kilmacolm. You can view this on our website under ‘local buildings’. We continue to work on our ”oral histories” which are audiovisual interviews with interesting residents who give their recollections of times past. The interviews are many and varied. You can view these on our website under ‘about Kilmacolm/search our videos’. We are currently working on the memories of Alda and Johanna – owners of the Cross Café which now, sadly, has closed. We would be interested in talking with anyone who has interesting memories of Kilmacolm in the past. Please contact us through our website www.kilmacolmcivictrust.org

ward 1 cllr Stephen Mccabe The consultation on the potential disposal of land at Wateryetts Drive roundabout to the developer of the proposed housing development at West of Quarry Drive closed on 17th October. Council Officers will now compose a report for the Environment and Regeneration Committee to allow the Committee to make a decision on how it wishes to proceed. The UK Government has announced that Greenock will benefit from a £20m investment from its Town’s Fund over the next 10 years. This is good news, which will allow the Council and our partners to build on the previous £20m of Levelling Up Funding awarded for the Oak Mall redevelopment project. The Council is also in discussion with the Scottish Government about funding for various regeneration initiatives identified by the Inverclyde Task Force.

Kilmacolm CO-OP - Christmas at Inverclyde Food Bank Donation Bin We’re busy stocking-up on our Christmas food here at Inverclyde Food Bank and we really need your kind donations to allow us to help the children and their families who will be referred to our Trussell Trust Food Bank during Christmas and the winter months, by Inverclyde Social Work Department, GP’s, Schools, Health Visitors and other agencies working with people livingin poverty in Inverclyde. I am honoured to be laying the Council’s wreath at Kilmacolm War Memorial at 12noon on Remembrance Sunday 12th November. I am sure there will be the usual good turnout by local organisations and individuals. It is important we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. I was saddened to hear of the passing of former Liberal Democrat Councillor Tom Fyfe. Tom and I served on the Council for a number of years together and he always worked hard to represent the interests of his constituents. My deepest condolences to his family. More than 100 local organisations have been awarded a share of over £280,000 from the Council’s Community Grants Fund to support the work they do in the community. A range of sporting, music, arts, community and voluntary groups will benefit. The money will pay for things like hall hire, running costs, staff and volunteer training, community events and sports kit for groups reaching all ages across the area.

#343 December 2023: 15th November

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society

Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society invite you to the November meeting on Wednesday 22nd at 7pm in the Cargill Community Centre, Kilmacolm.

The Gardening Club held their last meeting of the year with the AGM followed by some social time. In the garden there is never nothing to do. November is the ideal time to get tulips into the ground along with forgotten bulbs which will catch up. Don’t choose too cold a day for this – you won’t enjoy it and the bulbs will get a shock. If you are concerned about drainage, drop a little grit into the hole. Before you forget where you’ve put bulbs, cover with an empty hanging basket. This will deter squirrels and cats and remind you there are bulbs underneath!

The refreshments, the talk, the floral presentation, the music, will have a common theme - Christmas! We are holding a grand raffle to support the increasing costs of providing a good range of topics and events which we try to provide. Everyone is most welcome. If you wish to become a member of the KHS, subscription is kept at an annual cost of £5 and can be paid at the meeting. A very brief Annual General Meeting will follow the evening’s entertainment in order that financial accounts and coverage of our activities can be recorded, with election to committee for the coming year to be approved. Application to become a new committee member of this friendly, hardworking committee can be made by email prior to Tuesday 31st October, to the KHS secretary - kilmacolmhorticulturalsociety@gmail.com Please check our website for full information and photographs of our activities - www.kilmacolmhorticultural.com

There are lots of holly berries this year, so trim back to shape and put the stems in cold water and leave in a cool place for Christmas. A non-windy day is a good time to festoon your garden with lights for the festive season, if this is your custom. For indoor flowering, choose treated bulbs which bloom at a specific time – so read the instructions to ensure the growing period dovetails with your plans. Keep garden paths clear of slippery, fallen leaves and add to your leaf mould bin or push round the stems of spring flowering plants or shallow rooted shrubs. This will be safer for everyone, including overwintering larvae and other insects which are hibernating. Check your bird feeders. Rinse them out with a hosepipe to remove old and mouldy bits. The birds won’t eat these so it is best to fill feeders frequently! Blackbirds love dried fruits and after they’ve stripped your hollies and pyracanthas, will delight in eating sultanas. Feed the groundfeeders until lunch-time – hopefully this will keep away night-time prowlers with long tails!

12th Erskine Walk of Hope On Saturday 16th September Margaret Moncrieff and friends did their annual sponsored Walk of Hope along the banks of the Clyde at Erskine to increase awareness of Huntington’s disease and to raise funds for Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA). SHA is the only Scottish charity dedicated to helping people affected by Huntington’s disease (HD). HD is a desperately cruel condition which over a period of perhaps as long as 25 years gradually reduces an adult to a state of total dependence for emotional and physical support. Other members of the family have to accept that this is a genetic condition and every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 risk of inheriting the faulty gene and therefore developing the condition. HD advisers provide support to all the family in these circumstances. We wish to make sure that this service continues. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed the Walk. We were joined by friends from Houston, Erskine, and Wales. The amazing sum of £1,700 has been raised to date. Thanks are due to members of Houston & Villella Kirk, staff and partners of Walker Laird, Solicitors, friends from Erskine and surrounding areas and our families. Very many thanks to all who contributed. Donations can still be made to www.justgiving.com/page/margaret-moncrieff-1691008618957

Lochwinnoch Community Garden We are nearing the end of our summer flowers in our containers and baskets. David and Jacqueline Rae have brought in the hanging baskets back to the garden. The baskets were lovely this year and we hope to have more shops and businesses having a basket in 2024! The team will be clearing out the other containers round the village and getting them ready for the spring. If anyone wants to join in the gardening fun come down to the garden on Sundays at 12noon for a few hours to help and have a chat and cup of tea/ coffee and cake!

Rewilding Scotland one Tree at a Time!

BRIGHTER BRIDGE OF WEIR

Do you want to help rewild Scotland? Edha Nursery in Bishopton is doing just this and they need YOUR HELP!

As we do every year at this time, we’ll be tidying things up around the war memorial and throughout the village before the Remembrance Day parade. With luck, the damaged barriers at Torr Road junction and Houston Road/Kilmacolm Road junction will have been made good by then. We recently removed the barrier baskets from them when we got word that the repairs were to be carried out imminently.

Eadha (pronounced EH-yuh) is a name derived from the old Gaelic word for the aspen tree as it appears in the Gaelic Tree Alphabet. Their primary activities are concerned with conserving and propagating rare and threatened native trees including aspen, juniper and montane willows. Aspen has the potential to restore contaminated acidified soils, stabilising slopes and river banks and generating the right conditions for other tree species to thrive. It can also provide a valuable woodfuel crop in short rotation forestry. Aspen woodlands proved multiple benefits to people and wildlife. Juniper is now threatened throughout Scotland and it creates important habitats for birds and mammals. Montane willow is part of an upland montane woodland habitat that has all, but disappeared in Scotland due to heavy grazing. Eadha Nurseries are in partnership with rewilding charities who are working hard to restore these important habitats. Recently the team have grown 400 wild apple trees from seed collected from verified pure stands at Loch Lomondside and Galloway. They plan to create local seed orchards with some of these trees.

Next up will be our Christmas Pop-up shop, which is scheduled for Saturday December 2nd on Livery Walk between 10am & 1pm. There’ll be the usual cakes, jams and other goodies as well as handicraft and a raffle for a fantastic Christmas hamper worth £200, provided by Bunty’s Deli on Prieston Road. Of course, there will also be our Rustic Reindeer for sale - you can order at Bunty’s Deli next time you’re in, or you can call Neil on 07969 642487 or send us a message on Facebook.

So many big projects mean they really need more volunteers. The team meet every Wednesday in Bishopton between 10am and 3pm. If you want to help restore the landscape and wildlife around Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and Ayrshire for generations to come – get in touch with Peter Livingston on 07968 745196. We are reliably informed that volunteering at the nursery also involves lots of cake!

Winter is now upon us, often with cold crisp mornings and clear night-time skies. The lochs are bursting with Waterfowl, Whooper Swans, Wigeons and Teal all jostling for their place. Have you ever wondered what the term Waterfowl means? Waterfowl are different types of Ducks, Geese and Swans and other species, including Water Rails, Moorhens and Coots etc, that spend much of their time on or in the water. At this time of the year, it is important that we put food out for our feathered friends. They may struggle through the frosty winter months to find food, as some will rely on natural foods like insects and berries which are less available. Birds require high-energy (high fat) foods, e.g., suet, sunflower seeds and peanuts, during the chilly winter weather to maintain their fat reserves and to survive the cold, frosty nights. Our shop stocks several types of seed, suet and peanuts as well as a range of different feeders. We are always on hand to give you advice on feeding the birds all year round. Our self-led activity for families this December is: Santa’s Missing Reindeer all of December except 25th & 26th (9.30am – 4pm) Cost: £3.50 Can you help Santa find his missing reindeer? Test out your exploring skills as you search the woodland trail, complete the wildlife challenges, and then come back to the centre to claim your prize. Whatever the weather, it’s good to be outside, just wrap up and come to the reserve for a wee wander. After your walk, why not come in for a hot drink and a sandwich or a snack? Then have a browse through the reserve shop and treat yourself to a new pair of binoculars, or even a gift for a loved one..

Gryffe Hillwalkers With Autumn well and truly upon us, our last outing in September saw us return to the rolling hills of the borders, climbing Culter Fell, the highest and most popular hill in the south Lanarkshire/Borders area. Although not particularly high at 748 metres, it poses a steep unrelenting climb from the start. A quick lunch at the summit then onward over very boggy ground in the direction of Gathersnow Hill, until we picked up a track down alongside Coulter Water and to the spectacular Coulter Reservoir before the long trudge back to the cars. Sunday 1st October turned out to be a fine day - the objective was the surprisingly rocky munro of Beinn a’ Chròin, at 942 meters which exceeds the definitive 3000ft munro mark by 90ft. The summit ridge of this munro boasts two separate cairns, which has been the cause of much controversy over the years as to the true summit, in the event both were visited affording magnificent views towards An Caisteal and over the Trossachs. On Monday 9th October and a brief lull in the horrendous weather, ten of us headed for the Trossachs, the journey taking longer than anticipated due to numerous road closures and diversions due to flooding. Our walk took us from the Bochastle forestry car park on a gentle ascent on a forestry track to skirt the lower slopes of Ben Ledi followed by a descent through birch, larch and beech woods, which were beginning to show their autumn colours, down to the shore of Loch Lubnaig. Return was via cycle track and woodland path following the Garbh Uisge (river), which was heavily in spate, making The Falls of Leny spectacular, naturally the Lade Inn was a welcome draw at the end of the walk.

Walk: Knockmountain to Barscube Hill in Kilmacolm

by Rona Simpson

///carrots.factoring.teach

The winter months mean shorter days and lack of sunlight. Why not boost your vitamin D levels and feed your soul by getting up early and seeing the sun come up? This walk takes in two local hills so is an ideal walk for catching the sunrise and appreciating our wonderful views early one frosty morning! The walk starts in Kilmacolm and heads up Bars Brae to Langbank Rise where it meets the start of the path up to Knockmountain – locally known as The Cairn.

Throughout history, in many different cultures, trees have offered places of solace and connection. They have played important parts in religions and mythologies. The tree is often seen a symbol of life, holding, as it does, whole ecosystems within its branches and forming a connection between the world below the ground and the world above it.

Follow the path accross the open fields to the electricity pylons that skirt the ridge. Here the path descends for a while until you cross a stream. It meets a boardwalk for about a hundred yards and then continues to climb. You pass forestry plantations on right and left. Keep to your left and cross a small stream continuing on until you reach the cairn. Either pause here to watch the sunrise – or push on to Barscube Hill by descending north-westward until you find a path that leads you to Gallahill Road.

The Tree of Life is a symbol in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The indigenous Americans believe that trees can communicate with each other and have an awareness of what surrounds them. Scientific research today shows that this is true due to the mycorrhizal fungal systems networks that connect them to each other beneath the ground. For example, when a tree is damaged, another will supply sugars to help it survive.

Pass straight over and follow the track past the communication mast continuing up to the edge of Gleddoch Golf Course. Skirt the plantation heading east. Pick your way through the paths until you get to open ground. Head upwards to the summit of Barscube Hill. From here follow the rough path back down towards the road. Turn right onto Gallowhill Road and walk back to the entrance to Knockmountain where you can retrace your steps. If you want a (much) longer walk, turn left onto the road and walk until you find the junction with West Glen Road, follow West Glen Road all the way back into Kilmacolm.

Start/Finish: Kilmacolm Centre Points of interest: Great views over to Ben Lomond Distance: 7.4Km – takes about 2 hours Difficulty rating: Moderate Post walk treats: Enjoy a post-walk coffee and cake for breakfast from any of the wonderful village eateries.

Tree Dedications with the Woodland Trust

Druids believed Yew trees to be sacred places of death and rebirth – this is why we see still them in graveyards today – many were placed there pre-Christianity. Their needles are extremely toxic to humans and their connection to death is well documented throughout the ages. They have the ability to grow for thousands of years. The Fortingall Yew in Glen Lyon is considered to be Europe’s oldest tree – it could be between 2000 and 9000 years old. In many ways trees were our cathedrals before we built cathedrals. The Woodland Trust is offering to mark any occasion – births, deaths, birthdays and other days of significance with a ‘Dedication’ to your special person. They are offering this service in over 50 woods within the UK. The dedication can be a single tree, or a larger area of woodland and can include personalised benches and marker posts. You will receive a dedications pack with a certificate and information on the chosen wood – either directly to you or to the person to whom it is dedicated. L to R: Austin Reid - Finco Contracts who carried out the work and donated the planters; Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board; Bishopton resident Derek Prentice.

Renfrewshire #YouDecide campaign hailed as great success A community empowerment campaign in Renfrewshire has been hailed by a local resident after it turned his idea for new benches and a path into reality. Derek Prentice has lived locally in Bishopton for the past 20 years and, when not playing guitar or walking his beloved Sheltie dogs, he takes a keen interest in his local community. Having heard about Renfrewshire Council’s #YouDecide campaign, Derek submitted the idea for a new path and benches to be added to Ferry Road in Bishopton and following a vote by local people, his idea was successful. It’s now been completed as one of the 50 successful projects to be delivered as part of the campaign and has had additional planters added too which were kindly donated by Finco. Derek said: “I’m delighted to see this area enhanced as it really needed a path to the seated areas and I anticipate the space will now be used more by wheelchair users and families with prams. “I think it’s essential that people who live in the community have a chance to make some environmental differences for the benefit of everyone and I’m aware of many other proposed improvements in the area thanks to #YouDecide which can only be a positive step.” A total of £1.2million was allocated from the council’s roads budget for local infrastructure projects and an engagement campaign set out to reach as many people in Renfrewshire as possible. Council officers visited supermarkets, libraries, community groups, and even tea dances to try and engage with people who did not normally interact with the council and 65.2% of those who provided feedback stated that they had never participated in a council consultation before. More than 2,800 ideas were submitted by local people and developed into a shortlist for each local area and more than 4,800 votes were then cast to decide which projects were taken forward. Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “I was delighted to meet Derek at the new benches and see his idea had come to life. “This is exactly what #YouDecide was created for, giving local people the chance to create projects that will make a real difference to where they live. “We’re committed to working closely with our communities in Renfrewshire to provide neighbourhoods they are proud to live in and I can’t wait to see even more of the 50 projects be completed over the coming months.” For more information visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/YouDecide

Schools & Sports 140th Birthday Celebrations - The Boys’ Brigade All over the country The Boys’ Brigade members and many former members have been celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the first uniformed youth organisation. It was in Woodside in Glasgow on 4th October 1883 the organisation was founded and has developed into a worldwide movement today. Celebrations have been over a few weeks from Praise Events to birthday parties held in in companies locally plus a Civic Reception for an exceptional group of young men awarded The Queens’ Badge. Many members shared their memories of the Centenary in 1983. One veteran who joined The Boys’ Brigade in 1939 as an eight year old, remembered being asked to join the 22nd Paisley Company Pipe Band as part of a composite Pipe Band during the Celebrations at Centenary Salute in Glasgow that after he thought he had retired as Captain of 44th Glasgow Company. ‘A day to remember’ he recalled. Another former membered band practice for the 1983 event as part of 16th Paisley Marching Band in an aircraft hanger at Glasgow Airport. One officer remembered Rev. Sandy McDonald raising the roof at the Centenary Thanksgiving Service and The International Camp at Scone being a part of the one hundred who represented the Camp as Sgt. Hannah of 22nd Paisley Company read the message from the Boys of 1933 at Centenary Salute. The excitement on the buses as the 2,000 Camp members returned to Scone Palace was a never to be forgotten journey. Many memories from the past, but it is for the boys of today to celebrate in 2023 and the Celebrations really began in Elderslie with the presentation of Queens’ Badges to a group of inspirational young men by Provost Lorraine Cameron followed by a Civic Reception. Around five hundred boys and officers joined in a Praise Event in Renfrew North Church on 1st October with a Praise Band leading the event the recently ordained Battalion Chaplain Steven Henderson gave the message of ‘Pass It On’. Those present were the messengers for the next generation of young people. Indeed a lot of hot air was expounded in the blowing up of beach balls and when the slogan was used the balls were passed on by patting them in the air. The message was truly ‘Passed On’. Companies throughout Paisley and District held birthday parties with cake games and quizzes with the message of ‘Pass It On’ to friends and the community. Yes The Boys’ Brigade is looking to the future with the next group of Queens’ Men waiting to be presenting with the President’s badge by Lord – Lieutenant in St Andrew’s Church in Barrhead. The future is looking bright for The Boys’ Brigade – First For Boys and are wanting to ‘Pass It On’ to boys of tomorrow who are looking to join this organisation offering fun, games and serving our community.

Gaelic Singing Each class has enjoyed recent Gaelic singing lessons with Iris. These workshops are thanks to funding from the Mod Academy. Langbank children have enjoyed learning how to ask and answer simple phrases in Gaelic through song.

STEM Ambassador P4/5 and P6/7 welcomed STEM Ambassador, Alastair McIntyre, to the school during Maths Week Scotland. The classes learned about the frequency of waves in connection wtih this year’s theme ‘Maths in Motion’. The children explored musical instruments and digital technology to observe waves, and engaged well with this fun learning opportunity. TEAM UP TO CLEAN UP spoke to us about looking after our environment. Learning how long items take to break down and the importanceof recycling. We will defintiely be putting some of this into practise

Renfrewshire parents and carers with a child due to turn 5 soon are being urged to register them for school. Kilbarchan Community Nursery SCIO

Duchal Nursery At Kilbarchan Community Nursery we involve family and the community in the children’s learning whenever we can. This month we have had Marion, Madeleine’s mum in working with the children on science experiments. Ruth from the Paisley Museum’s Learning Programme talked to us about ancient Egypt and we ended the term with Grandparents week, with the children excited to show their grandparents what they do in nursery. Our transition programme for pre school children moving on to Kilbarchan primary next year got under way with visits to the primary one class, which will continue until next summer. The pre-school children have also been making use of the school gym hall for their weekly physical programme. These regular opportunities to visit the primary school really help to support the transition to school. We have availability for term time nursery places, including extended day, as well as breakfast and after school sessions for children attending Kilbarchan Primary. For more information call the nursery on: 01505 704839.

Local Businessman Completes Paris-Brest-Paris Within the cycling community, Paris-Brest-Paris looms large. First run in 1891, it is one of the world’s oldest and most gruelling cycling events. In August of this year, John Watt of GlenMoss Landscapes, Kilmacolm completed this incredibly tough event in a time of 80hr 49min. Beginning on the south side of Paris, the course traverses 600km to the port city of Brest and returns the same route. Riders aim to complete the course within time limits, passing through checkpoints as they go. A 90-hour time limit means only the toughest riders are bestowed the title of ‘finisher’.

What was the hardest aspect of the course? Sleep deprivation was the hardest part of the event. Three and a half hours sleep over three and a half days whilst doing intense physical exercise is tough. Myself and another cyclist from Dublin encountered one fellow cyclist from Japan who had stopped on an uphill section of the route, he had rested his head on his handlebars and fallen asleep. We approached him on the hill and he just fell over in the road. We stopped, got him off his bike and into his bivy bag and carried on. We met him at the end and he thanked us for helping him. Did you ever feel like giving up? How did you stay focussed on finishing?

John’s name has now been entered in the course’s ‘Great Book’ and he is in possession of the much coveted finishers T-shirt and medal. The Advertizer caught up with John to ask him a few questions about the experience.

Never!! I trusted in my preparation and knew if I hydrated and fuelled properly, it would be a successful event.

How would you describe the experience in 3 words?

Just under 7,000 of us passed through 142 villages on our quest to complete this epic challenge. The French public were amazing. They took time out of their day and night and fed us freshly made crepes, gave us fresh fruit from their orchards and even provided bowls of water to soak our aching feet!

Truly inspirational experience! It sounds incredibly hard, what made you want to take on this challenge? Over the years I have done lots of similar events, this being my biggest to date! I just like to see what we are capable of when we put our minds to it.

The French are mad about cycling. Did you see evidence of this on your journey?

What was the most beautiful sight/memory? There were 25 different nationalities taking part in the event. I saw human nature at its very best. Seven of us cycled into Mortagne Au Perche at 4am in the morning with 119km to the finish with no shops open and low on food and water. We stopped in the main Square - one Scot, two Italians, a German lad, one girl from India and two guys from Malaysia. None of us could converse with each other, but we sat on the concrete and shared what food and water we had, gave each other a hug and carried on our journey to the finish! Truly amazing. How much money did you raise? Who were you fundraising for and can we still donate? We have raised just under £3,000 for two charities – The Brain Tumour Charity and Cardiac Risk in the Young. You can still donate at: www.justgiving.com/team/pbpteam

St Columba’s school, Kilmacolm Early Years The children in Early Years wanted to learn more about babies, so they were excited that Ruby’s mummy – a Consultant Obstetrician – visited them to talk to them about her job delivering babies! They wore scrubs, gloves and masks like real doctors and learned how to clean, swaddle, and put a nappy on their dolls.

and day trips to Edinburgh and Glasgow. It was then time for our pupils to travel to France. As well as attending school, they visited local sites such as St Etienne and the Château de Chambord. Overall, the exchange was an enormous success and a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved to improve their language skills, embrace new cultures and form friendships. Open Days Visit us on Saturday 11th November for our Open Day or book a pupilled tour during Open Week (13th-17th November) and see St Columba’s in action! Register online: st-columbas.org

Maths Week Scotland It was all about Maths in Motion during Maths Week Scotland and classes from Early Years all the way through to SVI took part in special activities to celebrate. From becoming arithmetic ninjas to designing pompom catapults, pupils put their numeracy skills to the test and had lots of fun in the process. And the excitement didn’t stop there - Junior 6S (and Mr Sutton) were jumping for joy after topping the leaderboard on Sumdog’s Maths Week Challenge. With 2,675 classes across Scotland qualifying, this was an incredible team effort which they should all be extremely proud of. French Exchange Pupils studying French in SV and SVI recently had the opportunity to participate in an exchange programme with Lycée Marguerite de Navarre in Bourges. The French pupils spent a week living with their host families and enjoying all the delights that Scotland has to offer, including a ceilidh

Ranfurly Castle Golf Club Ladies The end of the golfing season is fast approaching, but friendly golf will continue throughout the winter months. The annual Ladies outing saw 21 ladies visiting Auchterarder Golf Club. They had a fun day on an interesting and quirky course. The hospitality was excellent and the winning team was Sheila Biggart, Vicky Rennie and Jan Macnab. The Mitchell Trophy was won by Pamela MacKenzie with a net score of 74, runner-up was Mary Craig. On the 30th September the Lady Captain’s team took on the Vice-Captain’s team to compete for the Pooh Putter. This was presented by a previous Lady Captain, called

Old Course Ranfurly golf club

Winnie Kerr, and this is where the name Pooh Putter came from! This year the Captain’s team had a resounding victory and Vice Captain Kate Scott presented the putter to Captain Karen. The annual Bridge Afternoon was held at the Club on 25th September with 10 tables playing bridge and enjoying a very nice afternoon tea. This is always a fun afternoon and is run by the Ladies Committee and organised by Vicky Rennie. The raffle raised significant money for our charity Quarriers. The winner of the afternoon was Vivien Howe.

The Old Course Ranfurly was honoured to host the Annual Paisley & District Golf League dinner. Many congratulations to Kilmacolm for winning this years Newton Shield which was presented on the night to Kilmacolm’s Team Captain. Many congratulations to our very own Aidan O’Hagan won recently won the North of England Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship which was played at Seaton Carew Golf Club, Hartlepool. Well done on another impressive victory! Congratulations to Graeme Walker who had his first hole in won at our 13th hole at the end of September.

Strathgryffe Tennis Club Strathgryffe recently hosted their tennis club championship finals with a record 27 finals played. Lee Wishart overcame brother Robbie in the men’s singles, whilst Megan O’Brien enjoyed a maiden triumph in the ladies singles, defeating Heather Cook.

Finally as we move into the Autumn months, and with less golf being played, the social committee is beginning to ramp up our social events.

Keen to try Strathgryffe? We offer a 1-week trial membership which allows full use of the club’s facilities (indoor court charges apply). For information visit: www.strathgryffe.net/membership

Local Golfing Star – Alexander Farmer Local lad and member of Kilmacolm Golf Club Alexander Farmer (age 18) has represented the Scottish Boys Team at the European Championships and Home Internationals (being the Joint Top Scottish point scorer). He also managed to beat the No. 5 ranked boy in Europe. What incredible achievements already. The Advertizer caught up with Alexander to ask him a few questions about his success to date. What age were you when you first picked up a set of clubs? I was about 3 or 4 years old when I first picked up a club and started to take it seriously from about aged 13 or 14. My dad is a decent golfer and his support and knowledge has been very helpful since I started taking it seriously. What was your first major success, and can you remember how you felt? I remember winning an Under 13 event representing Renfrewshire Boys in Dumfries and being presented with the trophy was really cool – I still have the trophy and medal. The feeling of winning never gets old! How does playing as part of a team compare with individual competitions? I love being part of a team as you get to share the experience with your friends and there is not a better feeling that winning with people close to you. You’re about to start at Stirling Uni (studying Economics and Business), but you’re also on their Elite Performance Golf Team. Do you have a plan on how to balance study, sport with enjoying the more insalubrious aspects of student life? I’ve only been there for a month and have already been to Spain and Italy competing in the R&A Student Series, as well as a local British University event. There’s already been a lot of golf and it can take up a lot of your head space. It is important to find some time to socialise as it allows you to switch off from studies… and golf! How far can you see yourself going? What is your dream title to win? Being part of the Scottish Boys Team in 2023 was a great experience. It has helped me know on my day I can compete with the best, but also made me realise the importance of consistency. One of my goals whilst at university is to be selected for the Palmer Cup, which is an event between the best European and USA college players. That would be a cool experience, as the event is named after US legend Arnold Palmer and is played at some amazing venues. I would love to become a professional golfer. I know it is difficult and requires lots of hard work. That is my goal. But like any golfer the dream would be to win the Open Championship one day. Who’s your golfing inspiration? It would have to be Jordan Spieth as he was on top of the world when I first started really getting into golf and I have copied some things he does like his putting grip which I have been doing since 2015. Kilmacolm Golf Club Demonstrating the true strength and depth of talent of golfers within Kilmacolm Golf Club our top Gents and Junior teams were formally awarded their Newton Shields at the Paisley and District Golf League Annual Dinner. Our Gents team were represented by Team Manager Calum Morrison, Andrew Farmer, Alexander Farmer, Jordan Ferguson, Gus Burns and Club Champion Andy Barclay - This was the 2nd successive year of winning the Newton Shield, a truly fabulous achievement. It was an historic night for Kilmacolm Golf Club as Junior Team Manager Jim Mackie, Junior Convenor Roddy Hammond and Junior Captain Alexander Farmer, Scottish Internationalist, were presented with the Junior Newton Shield for the first time ever as well. Congratulations to all involved, an amazing accomplishment. Frustrated that rain stopped play? Not at KGC - our members have been making great use of our indoor golf studio. The 2-bay studio allows our members to test their game at some of the world’s most prestigious courses, as well as honing their skills on the ‘range’ a great way to avoid the rain! You’re invited to join us and support a double good cause in the process. This year’s event is an ABBA themed party night, so get those glittery outfits and dancing boots at the ready. All proceeds from the evening will be split equally between two important local charities, ‘Hello Houston Dementia Friendly Café’; and ‘Campbell Snowdon House’. Fancy dress (optional) - prizes for the best dressed ‘dancing queens’ on the night. There will also be a lucky ticket, that ‘winner will take it all’, and a raffle with many prizes, so bring ‘money, money, money’. Hot food and snacks will be provided on the night, and DJ 70s/80s disco tunes too, ‘voulez-vous’. It’s BYOB ‘souper troupers’, so don’t forget to bring yours and we’ll see you at our own ‘Waterloo’ on the night.

Our November meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th at 7.30pm. Our speaker will be Bruce Keith on the subject of “Are we nearly there yet? - the story of Scottish Milestones. We have had Bruce as a speaker in 2019 when he spoke about the History of Scottish bridges and proved to be a very interesting speaker. A good attendance of members and visitors would be appreciated and all will be made most welcome. The October meeting, despite it being a very wet night, was well attended and Alison’s talk was interesting and also very informative.
