Dr Patricia MacMahon D Mus (Hons) FRSAMD ARCM LRAM Patricia MacMahon, known locally as Pat Pettinger, received an Honorary Doctorate in Music on 2nd July from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Pat has earned a reputation over many years as a singer, teacher and vocal coach. During her earlier career as a soprano, Pat specialised in concert, recital and oratorio work, frequently recording for BBC. The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) has been a large part of her life, having come from Aberdeen to study in 1961. As well as fulfilling professional engagements, Pat taught singing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for nearly forty years and received a Fellowship in March 2000. Pat has lived in Kilmacolm with her husband Beau for over 40 years: they have three daughters, Susan, Julie and Clare and eight grandchildren. I was in St Columba’s Church 3 days in a row in June attending the end of year service of Kilmacolm Primary School, and the prizegivings of St Columba’s Junior and Senior Schools. KPS P7 traditionally conduct the service and did so with great confidence assisted by musical contributions from all classes. St Columba’s guests of honour Aileen Paterson DA and the former MP Helen Liddell gave very interesting addresses to the pupils. The Senior event ending with the pipe band’s emotional and haunting rendition of Highland Cathedral. The Gryffe Valley Rotary Club does many good deeds. I am well aware through my involvement as vice chair of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park of what the Club have done for instance to assist disabled sailing at Castle Semple. I was pleased to accept their invitation to speak at their July meeting at the River Inn. A fine bunch of men, who enjoy each others company and donate annually a considerable sum to charity. I received a real compliment when thanked by the organiser for my contribution on the evening “we did not expect you to be so amusing!” The parade by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5 Scots through the streets of Port Glasgow was most impressive and well attended by onlookers. It was a proud day for the Argyll’s veteran Association who acted as stewards, and are key in organising the annual Cenotaph services in Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm. Following my request hard standing has been laid at the entrance to the latter Memorial. This will allow the Colour Party to assemble without getting muddy feet while lining up in the order directed by the Parade Marshall. The Kilmacolm/ Johnstone Station bus service is now up and running on the previous route after a few hiccups. An incorrect route was registered with the Commissioner by the new operator and this can take time to change. I am often asked about when the Podiatry service will return to the village. There is a special chair set aside in Greenock for this purpose and we await negotiations between the NHS and the New Surgery. My August surgeries are 17th 11-12 Three Sisters Bake Quarriers Village and the 21st 11-12 the Cargill centre Kilmacolm. I can be contacted by email on david.wilson@inverclyde and by 01475 741969 and 712727 and mobile 07766 992294

kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Rock Choir Members Rock Echo Arena! On Saturday 29th June, the Kilmacolm Rock Choir enjoyed their biggest performance yet, when they joined more than 5,000 fellow ‘Rockies’ for a unique mega-concert at Echo Arena Liverpool. Rock Choir is the UK’s largest and most popular contemporary choir, with more than 16,000 members in over 250 communities. It took many months of planning the show ‘Rock Choir Live!’ which brought together choir members from across the north of England and Scotland. Local Rock Choir Leader Jennifer Sim, a former pupil of St Columba’s School, said “We worked really hard preparing for this fantastic event and it was all worth it. I’m so proud of everyone and it was great to see our flags and banners flying. Being able to sing with thousands of other Rock Choir members from across the country in such a huge and iconic arena was hugely uplifting and inspiring. The sound was just incredible”.
In preparation of their big performance, the Kilmacolm and Greenock Rock Choirs joined together to sing for family and friends at the West Burns Church in Greenock on the last week of the summer term and along the way raised £400 which was donated to the Church. At the end of term, the choir will often sing a few numbers outside the Kilmacolm Community Centre (weather permitting) much to the surprise of local residents. “It’s great fun when the choir perform outside as its not something people are expecting when they head out to the shops for their messages - a choir in full song”, Jennifer said. Local member Anne McGregor, joined Rock Choir when it first started in Kilmacolm in September 2011. Anne says “I have really enjoyed being a member of Rock Choir. It is a type of singing that I am not used to and is introducing me to lots of popular music that I do not usually listen to. The group is a very friendly sociable one and we meet for lunch in the Hub after our Tuesday morning session. Rock Choir is great fun!” If you enjoy singing and would like to come along for a free taster session then make a note; the choir resumes Tuesday 17th September at 10.15am in the Kilmacolm Community Centre. Book online via the website www. rockchoir.com or telephone 01252 714 276.
