this month.... As I write, PHEW! It’s hot!
In the June editorial I reflected on the somewhat distressing and variable weather which we were suffering at that time. And, trying to remain upbeat, I recalled the weather pattern from 1976 when there was a very cold Spring, culminating in a snow blizzard on the 2nd June, only to be followed by one of the hottest summers on record, with the temperature sitting above 80’C for four weeks mid June and into July. So similar to this year’s weather! Apologies for not managing to include photos of Bridge of Weir Gala last month, but to make amends I’ve managed to save a page this month for a montage. Lots of smiley faces enjoying the freedom of the great outdoors and wall to wall sunshine. Again, congratulations to Gordon Lethorn and his support team for another wonderful day. Over the last few years we’ve been following our local karting star, Tom Thickpenny. This month we don’t have an article from him since he has been invited to the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix, not to compete but to rub shoulders with the superstars, undoubtedly an experience which will help his blossoming racing career. I hope that once he gets to F1 himself as a driver, I might receive a personal invite to watch him (well, no harm in asking!).

A TASTE OF TUSCANY We set off on our road trip in Tuscany, meandering slowly along quiet roads and country lanes far from the madding crowds of the autostradas. Stunning landscapes popped up round every dip and bend as we made our way to the tourist hot spots of Siena and San Gimgiano. Rather than stay within the walls of these busy towns, we based ourselves in a Borgo a short driving distance from both. There are many of these in Italy which are renovated rural villages with a rustic touch, usually situated near large towns and surrounded by rolling countryside. It was lovely to escape the buzz of these famous Tuscan old towns at the end of the day to a tranquil peaceful setting and sip a glass of Prosecco watching the sun go down over the breathtaking scenery. Our next stop was near Castiglione Della Pescaia, a small coastal Tuscan town, where we had booked into a hotel called L’Andana. Set in splendid isolation, it had originally been an old Medici hunting lodge and was completely restored 10 years ago. The approach to the property, by a magnificent long tree lined avenue, flanked by grazing buffalos ready to produce the milk for the next batch of mozzarella, heightened our expectations.....We were not disappointed! Staying here for a couple of nights was another of life’s great treats. For food lovers Allan Ducasse hosts a gourmand trattoria on site with the best of Italian cuisine. Everything about this effortlessly chic hotel was top class. Positioned 2 hours drive from Rome and 1 and a half hours to Pisa, it makes it an ideal location for some R&R after city sight seeing. We reluctantly left Tuscany and headed to Liguria.
Looking for Choristers Paisley Abbey is looking for new choristers to enrol for their famous choir. For information please contact Dr George McPhee 0141 889 3528 or profmcphee@aol.com

Shamanism Today Shamans are spiritual beings with one foot in “ordinary reality” and another in “non ordinary reality”. Shamanism is claimed to be one of the oldest spiritual practices known to mankind and is evidenced throughout the world in various cultures and traditions. They are healers, working with spirit guides to help individuals and communities navigate through a whole range of issues. It has to be said that, historically, The Shamans and their shamanic peoples have had a bad press and indeed have been persecuted and executed because of misunderstanding. There are many studies and texts on the subject, many of which are coloured by the belief systems of the author. Today, Shamanism draws from tried and tested methods including Soul Retrieval, Power Retrieval, Extraction, Dispossession, Psycho pomp and many others, not the least of which being Firewalking. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of the practice and its application to modern living. Yes, there are charlatans around who call themselves “Shaman” and dress accordingly…beware of them. Often they are not from a particular lineage do not possess then ethics and conduct of those properly trained. In the tradition from which I am trained, it is the community that awards the title of “Shaman” to the practitioner by virtue of the deeds carried out in their community. So, I would like to openly invite those interested in Shamanism to contact myself with a view to forming a Shamanic Cirle to share teachings, drum, rattle…have fun and grow. Bridge Street in Linwood to become one-way for four months As part of the Tesco Linwood construction project, a main road through the town will have restrictions put in place at the end of July, lasting for four months. From Monday 29th July Bridge Street, Linwood will become one way until Monday 11th November. Throughout the work programme, traffic will be able to travel northbound (into the town) along Bridge Street: From Kashmir Avenue (A761) onto Bridge Street, passed Napier Street, Hart Street and onto Bridge of Weir Road. Because traffic won’t be able to flow in the opposite direction (southbound) and leave the town via Bridge Street, Strathclyde Passenger Transport have to make some changes to the bus stops and the bus route out of Linwood. The following bus route diversion will be in place for buses leaving Linwood: After leaving the bus terminus at the top of Clippens Road, buses will turn left onto Erskinefauld Road and travel along to Greenfarm Road. They will travel down Greenfarm Road and turn right onto Bridge of Weir Road. They will travel along Bridge of Weir Road to the Clippens Roundabout, then left onto Kashmir Avenue (A761). This temporary diversion means busses won’t pick up on Clippens Road beside Our Lady of Peace Primary, but does mean passengers can still catch a bus to leave the town from Bridge of Weir Road (but on the other side of the road). There will be no change to the bus route coming into the town and SPT will set up a temporary bus stop for passengers wanting to leave the town on Kashmir Avenue near the Shell Garage and Health Centre. The restrictions will allow a range of essential works to be delivered including new footpaths, drainage, road surfacing, street lighting works, road markings, and work on traffic islands.

KDS - Cinderella! As you probably know by now, this year’s pantomime (our second) is Cinderella. We had a great response to our castingcall & all parts have now been allocated. Rehearsals are proceeding apace & I think you can be assured that this will be an allsinging, all-dancing affair, with plenty to entertain & amuse both young & old. Cinderella remains the most popular of pantomimes & (now for a panto fact!) the story used for panto is based on the adaptation of a traditional story by Charles Perrault in 1697, although versions of the story can be traced back to ancient China. It was first performed as a Panto at the Drury lane Theatre in London in 1904. A pumpkin becomes a coach, mice become horses, a rat becomes a coachman and lizards become footmen. Cinderella’s rags are turned into a ball gown along with glass slippers. All of this will change back at midnight. There is a theory that the slippers should be fur (vair) rather than glass (verre) due to a mistake in the original translation from French, but this is now largely discredited as the word vair was obsolete before Perrault wrote the script. Other characters are the Ugly Sisters, Buttons, Dandini, Baron Hardup (Cinderella’s father), the Broker’s men and, of course, the Wicked Stepmother. The story has been adapted for Ballet, Opera, Film, Cartoon and Musical Theatre and the phrase “Cinderella Story” has entered the English language to tell of someone who goes from rags to riches. Don’t forget to clear your diaries for the 28th, 29th & 30th November! Angus Black, President - Kilmacolm Dramatic Society

LinkLocal
LinkLocal (formerly Care and Connect) is a newly established charity which aims to help frail, but capable, older people stay safely and happily at home for as long as possible. Earlier this year, with funding from The Big Lottery, we carried out a research project in Renfrewshire called ‘Care and Connect’, to find out what kind of support people want and need to stay independent. We would like to thank everyone who took part for their time and their valuable thoughts and suggestions.
‘The List’
The results showed that many people were very interested in the holistic new service that LinkLocal will offer, combining paid practical support with voluntary social support.
Sat 31st August, Paisley Arts Centre, 7.30pm Tickets: £10 (£6 conc) Booking: 0300 300 1210
The List, by celebrated dramatist Jennifer Tremblay is a masterpiece in storytelling. Acclaimed actress Maureen Beattie takes the lead as a woman who is struggling to adjust to rural life. Increasingly isolated, she keeps things in order through obsessive list making. As her marriage falters she befriends Caroline. When Caroline requests a favour she adds it to her list. The difference between remembering to do it, and neglecting to take it seriously becomes the difference between life and death.
Organ Recital Series Thomas Coats Memorial Church, Paisley are hosting the Organ Recital Series on the famous 4 manual Hill organ. Events take place at 4pm on the following dates:Sunday 18th August - Matt Edwards, Director of Music at Thomas Coats and Grant Golding, Trumpeter Sunday 15th September - Matt Edwards, Director of Music at Thomas Coats Sunday 20th October - Matt Edwards, Director of Music at Thomas Coats CCTV will allow the audience to see the console and the performer.
People who are feeling even a little isolated, and families needing help to support their frail parents were particularly interested in our idea. And potential helpers liked the idea of being able to “give something back” through voluntary support alongside their paid work. People told us that what they want is the flexible, practical support that freelancers offer, and that help to manage issues arising would be very welcome. There was also great interest in the voluntary and social aspects of the service, for example pop-in visits or small outings for 3-4 people to favourite places or the cinema or theatre. Our service will be partly funded through membership fees, and partly through grants and fundraising, and most of those who took part in the survey felt that our proposed fees were about right or good value. Following this positive response, we are working towards launching LinkLocal in rural Renfrewshire in the Autumn, and are delighted to have received funding support from Renfrewshire Council to help us get started. Further funding and preparation work is required and we would welcome enquiries from anyone who is interested in being a part of this innovative new development. People with HR, employment law or finance expertise would be particularly welcome. If you would like to know more about LinkLocal then contact Trish Miller on 07501 350163, email trish.miller@linklocal.org.uk or check our website www.linklocal.org.uk.

The Big Summer Holiday Sing Friday 6th September in Houston and Killellan Kirk at 7pm
All welcome to join the fun. Plenty for all ages – and singing ability not required – just come along and enjoy it. Tickets are free and available from the Post Office, the Co-op, the Paper Shop and the Carrick Centre Café. Donations on the night (we suggest £5 for adults and £1 for under 16s) will be for the Crosslee Playpark upgrade and the Houston and Killellan Kirk Extension. We’ll be “Singing in the rain”, enjoying “Mud, mud, glorious mud”, joining in some guide and scout choruses, visiting Spain, Scotland and Switzerland, and much more with some special guests to help us along – Gryffe High School, Woodlands Nursery, St Fillan’s and Houston Primary Schools, the scouts and guides and more. Bring your sunhats and your teddy bears and join us for two hours of singing and fun.
LEAP Car Club
Well, summer is upon us and if you have friends or relatives visiting and need extra car space, have you considered joining the Car Club to use while they are here? While there’s still a bit of the school holidays to go are you hearing ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad, I’m bored’. If so, and you don’t have access to a car, then why not join the Car Club and take your little, or not so little ones on a day trip or two before they go back to school. LEAP Car Club gives you access to a car just when you need it – ideal for occasional use and for those whose low mileage would make owning a car uneconomical. At £15 to join, there’s still a bargain to be had for our Bridge of Weir car club. Contact diane@myleapproject.org for more info.
LEAP - Howwood Primary
Howwood Primary School have now established their sensory raised beds with the 5 tonnes of soil that we provided for them (thanks to WH Malcolm for their help with this!) We also gave them an array of herbs for the “taste” raised bed. The children were able to plant these up before the end of term. The staff and children have work so hard on their gardening this year and the raised beds are looking fabulous!
A bright investment – Solar Panels
You may have noticed over the past more people putting solar panels on their roof around the villages. At first glance solar energy may not be the most obvious thing to people here in sunny Scotland as we occasionally have some ‘dreich’ low lying grey clouds. It came as a surprise to a lot of people here in Scotland that not only is making enough electricity from solar PV panels viable, it can also be a very good financial investment. The figures can often lead to a good return on investment. There are things that you should look out for, one of them would be getting at least three quotes from companies that have been recommended. The sector has attracted companies who are out to ‘make a quick buck’, while there are also very reputable and qualified companies out there who can do the work to a very high standard. There are other things to think about and we are here to help you with impartial and free advice as well as short guides on what to look out for. Download the free ‘Solar PV Guide’ on our website (www.myleapproject. org/energy ), or email Russell@myleapproject.org for a copy.

Engage Rotary - Change Lives At a recent meeting of Gryffe Valley Rotary club, Neil McAllister (photo, right) handed over the role of club President to Mike Farley at the end of his year in office. Looking back on a positive year, Neil said he was pleased that membership numbers had increased by a few, that a number of very successful functions had been held and that overall some £15,000 had been raised for good causes. The summer BBQ and the Burns Supper had both again been well supported and the inaugural 10K run had proved to be a great innovation. He thanked, not only the efforts of club members, but also the Rotary Ladies for their support, club friends and families who had attended the social functions, and a number of local businesses who had contributed – Bridge of Weir Leather, who had sponsored the 10K run, Gibb Stuart, the River Inn and the Fox and Hounds who had donated prizes etc, and the many local shops who had displayed notices, collected old glasses and enabled Crocus badges to be sold to raise funds for Rotary’s major campaign to eliminate polio from the planet. Neil summarised some of the key club projects progressed during the year, which again spanned a number of local and international topics. Locally, there were a number ‘young people’ projects with opportunities to engage in quizzes, to write, to speak in public, to cook and to take photographs. There was also the opportunity to visit the European parliament and several Renfrewshire Young Carer outings to EXCAPE, Braehead were organised. In addition the club continued its support of sport for the disabled, in particular sailing for the disabled at Castle Semple, and provided financial support for a number of hospices and other local causes which the club had identified. On the international front, the club had again supported Olivia Giles’ 500 Miles charity providing prosthetic limbs in Africa, the Freedom from Fistula campaign also in Africa, and had provided more shelter boxes for use in disaster areas.
New President Mike looked forward to building on the positives from last year. In particular he wanted membership numbers to continue to increase slowly and for the club to build and enhance relationships with as many local businesses as possible. He highlighted the Rotary theme for 2013/14 – Engage Rotary/ Change Lives – and looked forward to the club being able to help others, especially in our local community where the effects of austerity cuts can only increase the need for Rotary support. Finally, he wanted to ensure that all of these objectives were met in a friendly spirit of fellowship where club members continued to thoroughly enjoy their meetings, activities and functions.

Isla St Clair At The Carrick Centre, Houston Colin has been on holiday, but will return with his regular column in our September issue.
Isla St Clair is remembered by millions for her numerous television appearances, including the Royal Variety Show, the Morecambe and Wise Show and, most notably, as cohost with Larry Grayson on the BBC’s long-running The Generation Game, for which she won “Female TV Personality of the Year”. Her television series The Song and the Story won the coveted European award “Prix Jeunesse” With her media high-profile, it is sometimes forgotten that Isla is first and foremost a singer - and a brilliant one at that. At the age of 10 she was ‘storming’ the Folk Clubs, and since then has sung all over the world – from the Troubadour in Los Angeles to a football stadium in Moscow. She is widely acknowledged as one of Britain’s foremost traditional singers and has won the award of “Best Female Folk Singer”. Her albums have received critical acclaim world-wide and “The Scotsman” rated her ‘the best exponent of Scottish Song” of the Year”. Her current stage performance –“An Evening with Isla St Clair” is a wonderful fusion of traditional and modern classics, spiced with humorous personal experiences as singer and broadcaster. Isla will be appearing at the Carrick Centre, Houston on Thursday 12th September. For additional information or to advance book email houstonfolkclub@gmail.com

What’s the most Googled phrase? It’s “How to….” - yes how many times have we Googled it? In our search for information and especially in how to do things, that search question almost always gets the answers we need. However, how many times have you found out ‘how to’ by watching a Video! I do it all the time now, from how to use a technical instrument to wall papering, to using hi & low ratio gearboxes, (strange interests!) to presentation and training techniques. Why are they so effective? Because they engage more of our senses than any other method, we hear it, we read text subtitles – but especially we see it. The eyes truly are the windows into the soul, what we see really touches and stimulates our desires; they so effectively engage the theatre of the mind. No wonder then, that whatever message you have to give, using video is the most effective way.
227_AUGUST13_18-23 BUSINESS NEWS.ind.indd 18
Whether we running a business, or there precious consumers, it’s revealing to see how influenced we are by video. Here are some amazing facts:- Did you know that after 72 hours of viewing the average human can retain just 10% of text, 65% of images yet 95% of video; we are 85% more likely to buy a product or service after watching a video about it; companies often see a sales lift of 20-40% when using videos to sell; having a video on your website home page makes it 53% more likely to show up on the first page of a Google search, and the time a visitor spends on your website could rise from only 43 seconds to 5.5 minutes! Enough stats, I think we get the message! I spent over 30 years in the printed media business, and despite all the above, I know the printed page will never die; it’s just so tactile and effective to hold and keep reading and studying it. However, I now work with video as well, sell it, use it in training, learn from it. If we don’t use it, we seriously need to think about it. Rudyard Kipling once said ‘words are the powerful drug used by mankind.’ Now if that’s true and a picture’s worth a 1000 words – what’s a video worth? Barytes Mines above Lochwinnoch Although the Gryfe valley downstream from Bridge of Weir contains valuable minerals, such as coal and limestone which have been worked at various times, the geology of the higher ground above Bridge of Weir is quite different, consisting mainly of volcanic rock. This rock is of little obvious value, beyond whin for rubble dykes. However, the Renfrewshire Heights contain numerous rare minerals. The only difficulty has been finding these minerals in large enough quantities to make working them worthwhile. Copper was found and worked above Gourock and Lochwinnoch, but the most elusive mineral was barytes. Barytes has many uses, including the making of paint, paper, textiles and leather. Renfrewshire barytes is an attractive mineral of high purity, with pink and white banding. It is a dense rock, which was originally formed in vents and cracks in the surrounding volcanic rocks. Although more than forty barytes veins have been identified in what is now Muirshiel Country Park, only two have been worked to any extent. These were on Queenside Muir, in the valleys of two nameless burns, which drop from the shoulders of Hill of Stake to the Calder Water. As the crow flies, the mines are equidistant between Bridge of Weir and Largs, and can be accessed by a track up the Calder from Muirshiel Visitor Centre. The barytes at Muirshiels was originally quarried opencast in a series of steps in the hillside. Mines were then driven down almost vertically into the
227_AUGUST13_18-23 BUSINESS NEWS.ind.indd 19
AUGUST 2013
19
vein from the floor of the workings. Although the seam is about six metres thick, this varies greatly, and workings extended off into side vents and fissures as they were found. Workings date from the 1750s and have continued intermittently since then. Like many rare minerals, the value of barytes depends on global economics. In the 1890s output was often less than 1,000 tons a year. By the 1950s Muirshiels was one of four barytes mines in S.W. Scotland, including Eaglesham in Renfrewshire, and Glen Sannox on Arran. By this time Muirshiel’s output approached 20,000 tons a year and together these mines accounted for a third of UK production. From the mine, the barytes was carried a short distance on a mineral railway, then six kilometres down a rough track to the crushing mill on the Calder Water. The mill was built about 1850. It had three grinders in cast iron vats which processed about three tons per day. The mill ground, processed and dried two varieties or colours of barytes, pinkey-grey and white. The mine owner also owned Queenside Dam, to store water to drive the mill. By the 1940s the mill was derelict and the raw mineral was taken to a dressing plant in Kingston, Glasgow. Social research by Brian Skillen has shown that during wartime in the 1940s, only six men were employed, living a frugal existence in a cottage at Muirshiels. The lorry which took them back and forth from the mine could barely stand up to the rough road, and eventually crashed, killing one of the miners. The mine closed in the 1960s. Infrequent press interest shows that the working of barytes is likely to become economic again in the future. Whether it will be worked inside what is now a Country Park remains to be seen. Kilmacolm Post Office move: Following a consultation period
in April and after reviewing the concerns of constituents, some of whom who contacted my office, the Post Office has decided to continue with the planned move of the Kilmacolm Post Office to its new location. The new branch, at Kilmacolm Stores, 3 Octavia Buildings, is planned for opening on Wednesday 31st July. I am assured the move will allow greater access to facilities through later opening hours. If anyone wishes more information on the move and branch modernisation a fact sheet it available from the Post Office website. Alternatively, if you contact my office I can arrange a copy of it to be sent to you.
Speaking to Residents on the Streets: In the last few weeks, I have spent some days holding street surgeries in Bridge of Weir. I spoke with constituents on a range of issues including speeding in the area and the independence referendum. I really enjoyed getting out in the constituency, enjoying the sunshine and speaking with you all. I will be holding more street surgeries in the constituency throughout the summer. However, if you do not get the chance to see me out and about please do not hesitate to contact my office with any enquiries you may have on 0141 885 2076. Speeding in Bridge of Weir: I have been contacted by a number of constituents in the Bridge of Weir area regarding the speed of cars entering and leaving the village. After speaking with Renfrewshire Council, driver feedback signs were installed to monitor the speed of vehicles have been advised that the speed monitoring results have been passed to the Police to look at. I would urge all drivers to take care with their speed, particularly in the summer months when kids are out playing at all hours of the day and night. NHS at 65: Last month celebrated the 65th anniversary our National Health Service in Scotland. The NHS has played a vital part in the lives of everyone in Scotland. Each and every one of us has at some point required one of the many services our NHS provides. Since its creation in 1948 the NHS has been used as model for healthcare internationally. We should all be proud to have our system of health care held in such high regard all over the world.
dental health with Sheila Macintyre LOOKING AFTER TEETH CAN BE CHILD’S PLAY One of the questions that I often get asked is when should we get our children to start brushing? The easy answer is as soon as they have teeth! WHEN SHOULD YOU START BRUSHING? Small children love structure, so the sooner you can introduce a toothbrush into their bedtime and morning routines the better. Some people give babies (particularly younger siblings) a toothbrush to play with before their teeth have even come through. This gets them used to holding and using a toothbrush before it serves a practical purpose. You can buy electric toothbrushes that are brilliant for younger brushers because the rotating heads do a lot of the work for them. Some of them flash or vibrate after two minutes so that you know you’re brushing for long enough, but you can buy separate timers that will do the job just as well. Children’s oral health has come a long way in recent years and there are plenty of things out there to help parents, such as toothbrushes with their favourite cartoon characters on, fantastic for making brushing a fun part of their routine, rather than a chore. WHEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE BRUSHES/BRUSH HEADS? Brushes should be changed at least every 3 months, as studies have shown that after 3 months of use, toothbrushes become up to 95% less effective at removing plaque than a new one. You should also change your child’s brush if they have been ill, had a cold, flu or sore throat as germs can harbour among the bristles. WHICH TOOTHPASTE SHOULD MY CHILD USE? Choosing the right toothpaste is important as there are a number of toothpastes that are specifically
227_AUGUST13_18-23 BUSINESS NEWS.ind.indd 20
designed for milk teeth. These pastes come in a variety of flavours so there should be something your little ones will like. Children up to the age of 3 should use a smear of toothpaste with a fluoride level of at least 1000ppmf (parts per million fluoride). For kids aged 3 and over, a peasized amount of toothpaste with a fluoride content of between 1350 and 1500ppmf is recommended. The fluoride content will be marked on the tube. SHOULD MY CHILD USE MOUTHWASH? From the age of 6 you can start to introduce mouthwash to your child’s oral health routine. Mouthwash is helpful in removing bacteria that brushing does not get rid of. If you choose to let your child use a mouthwash, make sure to only use a rinse designed for children which doesn’t contain alcohol. Only use mouthwashes under adult supervision and make sure they can spit it out rather than swallow. It is very important to only use mouthwashes at a different time to tooth brushing and not directly afterwards. The fluoride in toothpaste is much higher than in mouthwash, and it’s more beneficial to leave the fluoride on the teeth for as long as possible, rather than washing it off with mouthwash. KEEPING UP ENTHUSIASM Toothbrush reward charts have become more and more popular. Some fun stickers for every time that they brush and a treat at the end of the week can be all it takes to make your child enthusiastic about brushing! There are many different aids available to build your child’s eagerness to brush, and to help in the effectiveness of brushing, such as disclosing tablets. The Gryffe Camera Club As the summer continues to roll on – we’ve been busy having our summer Wednesday evening outings. Have you not tried one yet? – could be chance to see just what your camera can do! There is still time to give it a bash! Look to our website or come along – you’ll recognise us! Don’t be shy – say hello. Our August outings are as follows: 7th (sunset 21.13) – Knapps Loch, Kilmacolm; 14th (sunset 20.57) – Outdoor Portraiture night (to be confirmed); 21st (sunset 20.41) – Portencross; 28th (sunset 20.23) – Nearby fields with bales or trees We made our ‘invasion’ of Cumbrae a complete success – with members arriving by car, minibus and by bike. We had great fun in Kayaks at Millport and then went around to Fintry Bay for a beach BBQ! The weather was kind and we’ve all been hard at work taking a new series of ‘Postcard’ image to promote the Island of Cumbrae. The images will be collated in August for selection. If you’re out and about this month – have a look at what is on in your area and go along and support the many groups that have taken the time to organise things – talk to them and take some snaps and offer a copy to these groups. Most people are so pleased if you do! Once again I’ll remind you that a printed image on a piece of paper is really valued by those who don’t have daily access to computers!
Some of our members have decided to ‘summarise’ holidays that they’ve taken in the past into Photo Books so that in the years to come they will have access to their photographic memories should the ability to operate a computer or laptop or ‘whatever new device is still to come’ might not be too easy! Have a thought about that. Photography is always changing and new things come along – we love to share these developments at the Gryffe Camera Club. You’re never in the dark when we share progress with each other. Photo Quote of the Month: “To the complaint, ‘There are no people in these photographs,’ I respond, There are always two people: the photographer and the viewer.” Ansel Adams

Healthy Minds

Can’t Sleep Due to Worry or Anxiety? Many surveys have been done about the impact of stress, anxiety and worry on sleep and our quality of sleep. Interestingly, young people are reputed to lose several hours of sleep over each weekend due to high levels of anxiety about their lives. It’s a serious concern when we can’t sleep due to worry. Hypnotherapy has been found to help improve sleep and the quality of sleep in many different ways. When we manage our time better we become more productive, achieve better results and have less to worry about. Hypnotherapy can help us to focus on the way we spend our time, introduces ways to start and finish each task in turn and feel better about what we have accomplished. Letting go of the need to be perfect can remove a huge weight off our shoulders. Not constantly trying to please everyone else! Many people spend a lot of time checking their work over and over again. Relaxing the need to be perfect, trusting ourselves more and being comfortable if an occasional mistake occurs is a healthier response which again helps to reduce worry. Hypnotherapy can help us to understand the origins of our fears and concerns, which may date back many years, and become more comfortable about being good enough. Removing toxic people from our lives, people who bring us down by undermining our lives. Work/life balance is important. Taking breaks for food, time out and finishing work at a reasonable time actually helps to improve work performance. Sometimes we may need to work long shifts in order to get an urgent project done but in the main, having breaks and finishing work in order to have some quality free time for ourselves, family and friends means that we return to work with a healthier, less worried mindset.

Delegating to others is important for many reasons. It shares the workload, helps others learn new skills and take responsibility. It also helps us to relax the need to control every aspect ourselves. Sharing, relaxing the need to be in control and feeling comfortable about others helping can all be supported through de-stressing sessions and hypnotherapy. Taking care of ourselves physically helps to manage stress and worry effectively and be better able to sleep. A healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise and keeping sensible hours all help support a more healthy physical body. Cigarettes, alcohol, drugs all play havoc on our body as it requires energy to detoxify and reinstate equilibrium. Eating healthy food, spending sometime outdoors, being sure to exercise mentally and physically most days all support our health and well-being. Doing what we can each day and then having a cut off point after which the time is ours is an important way to deal with stress and worry. There may be times when we have to compromise but if we introduce good habits they can support us through difficult times. Winding down an hour or two before bed, taking a shower or a relaxing bath to wash away the cares of the day, keeping the bedroom free from clutter and screening off any work areas demonstrate that we regard sleep and bedtime as an important part of our commitment to ourselves. This is an important way to manage stress and worry and can help us to sleep better. Lists, diaries and notebooks can help with worry. Being disciplined about keeping notes can help reassure us that we won’t forget an important point, it’s safe and so there is no need to worry about forgetting it. Techniques like imagining ourselves protected from outside worries by a safety shield or being cocooned inside a protective bubble, visualising revisiting a lovely beach, relaxing or floating on a pool, repeating positive supportive affirmations are all ways to help us to reinforce our confidence, self-esteem and so cope better with the stresses and worries of each day. All these are ways to help support stress, worry and as a consequence the quality of our sleep will improve and we will find that our approach to life and its problems benefits. Unique Prehistoric Artefact Found On Wind Farm Site A unique archaeological discovery has been made at a wind farm site in Wales recently constructed by Greenock based 2020 Renewables. Several lengths of timber were exposed by workmen in waterlogged peat deposits during construction of a substation for Maerdy Wind Farm in the Rhondda Valley. These timbers were all recovered by the on-site archaeologist, removed off-site and cleaned for inspection. It was then discovered that one of the timber pieces was decoratively carved. Richard Scott Jones, an archaeologist from Heritage Recording Services Wales, and several specialists believe the decorative wood carving is one of the oldest ever recovered in Europe as it dates back 6,270 years to the Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic period. The discovery was made back in September last year. The wood carving which measures around 1.7 metres in length, was seen to have an intricate carved pattern along one side and an oval motif at one end. It is believed it could have been used as a tribal marker post indicating a tribal boundary, a hunting ground or a sacred site.
As soon as the significance of the timber was understood, it was sent to Newport Ship Centre for temporary preservation in a water holding tank and 3D laser scanning. Experts from the University of Wales Trinity St David, the GlamorganGwent Archaeological Trust and a number of paleo-entomologists also examined the find. Back at the Maerdy Wind Farm site further excavation was carried out in the hope of discovering other artefacts but none were found. Alan Baker of 2020 Renewables said: “This is a tremendous discovery of real historical significance. We had a normal written scheme of archaeological investigation with Rhondda Borough Council as part of the planning conditions for the wind farm “This meant putting protective fencing around a number of sites of cultural heritage before starting ground work and while stripping topsoil. Also, as part of that agreement we were responsible for the costs associated with the investigation and assessment of the find. It’s very exciting that this discovery has proved to be of such international significance and fully justifies our company policy of protecting sites of historic interest.”

Professional Photo Restoration BEFORE
A copy of your treasured photograph will be digitally restored and brought back to life: Fix rips and tears, remove creases, stains and specks of dirt and fix fading photographs. Montage photographs of images also available.
Why Have a Studio Portrait Taken
Some people I have AFTER spoken to have asked me why get a studio portrait taken when they have hundreds of images of their children, pets etc. As your photos are probably mostly on your computer, it is doubtful that they will ever get printed. Quite often there will be something in the background, or the lighting may be poor. In the studio you will receive beautiful classic or modern photographs which last a lifetime.

village news bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Joan Celebrates her 90th Birthday Mrs Joan Hallworth, who has been the organist at Langbank Church for many years, celebrated her 90th birthday with her many friends in the congregation on Sunday 24th June. Pictured here - Joan was delighted with her impromptu party after the morning worship and especially with her cake. She intends to continue as the organist for as long as she feels able which is good news for everyone.
Bridge of Weir Choral Society We start our new session on Tuesday 3rd September after their summer break. An exciting programme of music is planned for their December and April concerts including among other works, Bob Chilcott’s “The Making of the Drum”, Christmas choruses from Handel’s “Messiah”, Faure “Cantique de Jean Racine”, Howard Goodall’s “Eternal Light” and Rachmaninov’s “Bogoroditsye Devo”. We are a friendly group who meet on Tuesday evenings from September to April in the Lower Hall of St Columba’s Church, Kilmacolm and always welcome new members. No auditions are necessary- just a desire to enjoy singing and making music with others. Members of the choir will be seen taking part in the BBC“Songs of Praise” from Paisley Abbey which will be broadcast on 18th August.
Langbank Parish Church From Sunday 25th August, there will be changes in the activities for children of all ages. We are all very excited and looking forward to welcoming any children that would like to come along and join the Sunday Club! For the babies and pre school children there will be a Crèche with lots of new toys, games and activities. The Primary School Children have planned activities including arts and crafts, music, drama and games. The Welcomers are for older children and they carry out a range of projects. They recently held a successful Sale to raise money for the Malaria Programme. We have an enthusiastic group of adults ready to engage with the children. The Church service starts at 10am and you can come along and meet in the Hall from 9.50am. I am just back from a week’s holiday in Yorkshire and while there, happened to go on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby. The line closed in 1965 and was reopened in 1973 by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd. The preserved line is now a significant tourist attraction, with a number of steam and diesel engines. As a keen cyclist I am aware of how much the cycle track is used, but a single track railway with cycle track alongside would be a great asset to Renfrewshire. If you are a keen railway enthusiast and you think a heritage railway would be a good thing for the Paisley to Kilmacolm, and Paisley to Lochwinnoch lines, I would be happy to bring you together to form an action group. Let me know who you are and we will take it from there. Renfrewshire Council have organised an event to be held on Thursday 19th September in Paisley Town Hall which will provide an opportunity for people to drop in between 3pm and 7pm to talk to Social Work staff, see the range of services and activities available, and learn more about the Social Work service. If you can’t make it along on that date then let me know and I will arrange for some information to be passed on to you. Thanks for all the feedback on my Pot Hole Watch forms. This is very helpful and highlights to me the existing concerns in the villages especially relating to roads and pavements. You can find a form in the following locations: Langbank Village Hall, Bishopton Library, and The Bridge.
Our musical director is Christopher Barr, who was named as Student Conductor of the National Youth Choir of Scotland for 2012. Among his many other musical commitments he is also director of Strathaven Choral Society and the Intermediate Youth Choir of East Renfrewshire Council.
I am available to meet residents in each of the three villages and I have arranged a time when I will come along and meet with constituents. Surgery details: Bishopton Community Library - 1st Monday of every month (6.30pm), Cargill Hall - 2nd Monday of every month (7.30pm), Langbank Village Hall - 3rd Monday of every month (6.30pm)

bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Bishopton: I visited the new Dargavel development recently and was amazed to see that the first residents have moved in to their new homes. Despite all of the concerns and issues over the years of preparation, it does seem to be an attractive development and it is clearly very popular with new home buyers. Welcome to Bishopton! Langbank: The Planning application for a retail and office development on Main Road has been refused by the Council. The decision to refuse was based on the fact that Planners considered the development would introduce an unacceptably detrimental impact upon the residential amenity and character of the area. Bridge of Weir: The contentious inclusion of Shillingworth and other greenbelt areas in the Local Development Plan came before the full Council meeting on June 27th. An amendment was proposed, asking the Council to take account of objections from the local communities, which would have allowed the Council to amend the Plan before submitting it to Holyrood. Unfortunately this did not receive a majority support. Welfare Reform: The Council is still in recess, but life goes on – Welfare Reform continues to be rolled out, in many cases causing great hardship and worry. If you are affected, seek advice from the Council’s Advice Works service on 0300 300 1238 (Mon to Fri 1pm -4pm) or alternatively contact Citizens Advice. Tennis: Finally – well done to Andy Murray! Let’s hope his achievement gives a long-term boost to the usage of our local tennis courts. New Art Exhibition with Old Paintings - donated by YOU! One of our busiest shops in the village, the St Vincent’s Hospice, has had so many beautiful paintings donated that they are now having a ‘painting sale’ at The Bridge, 63 Main Street, Bridge of Weir. There are some originals and many colourful prints, most of them framed and ready to hang in a new home. The two charities have got together to raise funds and more awareness, with such generosity from the people living in the village this will hopefully be another success story. The Bridge Summer Art Sale currently running until 16th August has attracted art lovers from all over, recently a couple bought prints to take abroad, others are buying for wedding presents and a little painting can brighten up your life. Artists are donating a percentage to support ‘The Bridge’. The St Vincent’s Hospice has blossomed in the last couple of years. Julie and the lovely lady volunteers are delighted with the increasing sales and enjoy helping you to find something. Visit The Bridge from Saturday 17th August and enjoy browsing - there are paintings to suit everyone! Opening Hours:Mon 9am-12noon & 12.30pm - 5pm; Tues 1pm - 5pm; Wed 10am - 2pm; Thurs 10am - 2pm; Fri 1pm - 5pm; Sat 9am - 1pm

PHEW, WHAT A SCORCHER! Yes, it’s been done before, but … …July was a cracker, wasn’t it? It certainly kept Brighter Bridge of Weir’s regulars going. Volunteer Eileen McNicol, told us, “It’s not just been hot, it’s been dry, too. And all of the planters and barrier baskets needed to be watered frequently. There’s quite a lot of them, and they each take an awful lot of water.” The group’s treasurer, Margaret Greenlees, added, “There’s no point in watering them during the day because the heat just evaporates the water before it can do any good. So some of us have been out watering them from early evening onwards - on one occasion until eleven o’clock at night!” Now that’s dedication. Many of the businesses on Main Street undertook to look after the planters outside their premises, as did some residents. So the group’s chair, Alice Johnstone asks if anyone who has undertaken this could notify the group if they’re going on holiday. “It means that we can look after the planters while they are away,” said Alice, “and they’ll have a healthy display to come back to. They can call or email us (contact details on the website: www. brighterbridgeofweir.org).” Members of the group are often approached by passers-by and given donations towards the group’s funds. “It really is very satisfying that so many people appreciate what we’re doing, and that it’s all voluntary,” Alice said. Every time someone gives us a donation we know that we must be doing something right.” Needless to say, all of the money received is spent on improving Bridge of Weir. It must be said, though, that many people still think the improvements made and the maintenance done are the work of the Council. While the Council is supportive and provides access to grant funding, all of the work - from planning each season’s displays, sourcing planters, shrubs, plants and so on, to planting, weeding and keeping everything ship-shape is undertaken by Brighter Bridge of Weir volunteers, with some help from local businesses. In the last issue of the Advertizer, we mentioned the daffodil displays and the replanting of the planters and baskets throughout the village with summer plants. This has been done and you can already see the changes. The rest of summer promises a dazzling display - if the volunteers can keep up the watering! You can help make Bridge of Weir Brighter. You don’t need to know anything about flowers or shrubs, just give an hour or two of your time - once a week, once a month, whatever you can spare, it’s up to you. You might be surprised at how rewarding can be. Visit www.brighterbridgeofweir.org/ contact_us for details.

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Road Repairs: Following various discussions with officers of the council, the resurfacing of the road in High Barholm, Kilbarchan was completed in early July. A communication problem within SPT meant that for much of the first day of the resurfacing work, there was no bus service in and out of the village. This caused major inconvenience however, following representations to SPT from myself and my colleague Chris Gilmour, a diverted shuttle service to and from Johnstone was provided. As part of the administration, I shall continue to press for other locations in Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch in need of repair to receive priority. Environment: I am pleased to report in Lochwinnoch that Struthers yard which has recently been affected by fly tipping has now been cleared. Fly tipping is a blight on parts of our community and if you are affected or see this problem please report it to the councils environmental services. Thanks to those residents in Lochwinnoch who raised concerns about the area surrounding the war memorial and the work to tidy it up. This will now be a regular part of the councils maintenance programme. During a late summer evening walks around Kilbarchan I noticed that the iconic Steeple clock had stopped - glad to report time marches on again! Kilbarchan Quarry update: In June I visited Kilbarchan quarry with members of the community council and the reporter appointed following the appeal against Renfrewshire Council’s decision to reject the application to amend the current operations at the quarry. Having objected to the application on the grounds of potential increases in noise, pollution and traffic, all to the detriment of local residents, I have not changed my views following the visit, and await with obvious interest the decision of the Scottish Government with regard to the appeal. A decision is expected before the end of the year. New Minister: A packed congregation at the joint service of the East and West churches in Kilbarchan overwhelmingly elected the Rev. Stephen Smith to initially take charge of Kilbarchan East, in deferred union with Kilbarchan West, eventually becoming minister of the new United Kilbarchan Parish Church. I was delighted to hear and meet Rev. Smith, who is currently the minister at Clark Memorial Church Largs. I am sure the congregations of both churches, wish him well for the future. Next surgeries: Sat 3rd August at 9am in the McKillop Institute and at 10am in the Steeple Hall. Meantime please contact me on 07534 156007.
Grow Kilbarchan Thanks to everyone who came to our Plant Exchange Launch event. It was a great success! Much fun was had on the Seed Truck’s Smoothie Bike and salad tray workshops. We learned how to compost more effectively with Zero Waste and about bee friendly gardening from the Kilbarchan Beekeeper Association… and lots of plants and seeds were swapped or purchased. Thanks to all who donated plants and helped out on the day. Thanks also to LEAP for funding the hall hire and refreshments and to Gibb Stuart Home Hardware in Bridge of Weir for donating the compost for the salad trays. If you are interested in learning about gardening or have knowledge to share, please get involved! Our first meeting will be held in the Old Library, Kilbarchan on Sunday 11th August, 2pm. kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Early in the summer I organised a site visit in Low Barholm, with a number of local residents and council officers, to discuss the desperate need to improve this crucial access road for Kilbarchan. Since my election I have been campaigning for more resources for Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch and I am pleased to report that Low Barholm will see fundamental road improvements before the end of the year.
Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan For the very first time the Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan (NTS) hosted a specialist group of tourists, who were drawn together by an interest in knitting. The party had members from Canada, Australia and the United States of America, and the dyeing and spinning techniques practised at the cottage were explained or demonstrated.

The increased traffic levels in Kilbarchan over many years has been a major cause of road deterioration in areas such as Low and High Barholm, and I have been encouraging Kilbarchan Community Council to initiate a village wide dialogue about the need for radical traffic calming measures to reduce traffic levels. I have been working with various constituents looking at possible improvements such as a 20 mile speed limit, and the introduction of junction bumps in certain areas. At the last meeting of the Jobs and Economy Board, prior to the summer, I raised the issue of Traders Licenses in relation to the hosting of street events in Lochwinnoch. I am glad that the Board agreed to raise this with the Licensing council officers and I would like to see the Saturday street events in Lochwinnoch resume again as soon as possible. My Kilbarchan advice surgery is on the second Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at 8pm in the Steeple Hall, and my Lochwinnoch advice surgery is on the fourth Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at 8pm in the McKillop Institute. Art off the Square This very popular art show and sale takes place on Thursday and Friday 15th/16th August from 2pm-9pm and on Saturday 17th from 10am-4pm in the Kilbarchan East Church halls. As usual, there will be a variety of artwork, ranging from beautiful paintings to jewellery, ceramics and glassware. All of this, accompanied by afternoon tea with home- baking is £2.50 for adults.

houston, crosslee & brookfield The statutory six week public consultation on the Renfrewshire Local Development Plan raised 1738 representations, including a high number from this area in connection with the two greenbelt sites specified in the plan. At a specially convened meeting of the Planning and Property Board, it was proposed that the plan, together with the representations and along with the Council’s responses, be submitted without modifications to Scottish Ministers. An amendment to the report proposed that “the following sites are not identified as sites for development and that they retain their valuable contribution to Renfrewshire’s greenbelt in the new Development Plan. (Shillingworth, Bridge of Weir, East of Fleming Road, Houston, Houston Road, Houston, Abbey Road, Elderslie and Paisley South Expansion)”. The amendment was fully supported by all members of the opposition parties on the Board but was defeated by the Administration members on the vote taken. Scottish Ministers in receipt of the Plan will appoint a Reporter to hold an examination to consider the representations and provide recommendations to the Council on any changes to be made to the Plan. A developer has applied for planning permission for the erection of twenty dwelling houses on the land at Lonend Cottage, off the Houston Road, obviously in the hope that this land is identified as an additional housing site (Green Belt release) as proposed in the Local Development Plan. I recently visited Gryffe High School to see the new cafe style service, coffee bar facility and the refurbished dining hall environment that the pupils are now experiencing. The visit coincided with the lunch service and it was pleasing to see the number of children who were using the new facilities instead of leaving the school premises. A second visit to the school was an invitation to the School’s ‘Awards Ceremony’ and my congratulations to everyone who received an award.
Brookfield Antiques Fair
My August surgeries will be held on the second Tuesday of the month in Brookfield Village Hall from 6pm to 6.30pm then in Houston Village Hall from 7pm to 7.45pm. There will be no surgeries in September. I can be contacted by phone on 610018 or by e-mail at cllr.allan.noon@renfrewshire. gov.uk
Following the success of the last Antiques & Collectors’ Fair that was staged at Brookfield Village Hall in June, a follow-up event has been organised after more members of the public enquired about taking a stall at the next one. The organisers say that they once more expect around twenty stallholders to participate, some of them locals who are just having a long-overdue clear-out or are downsizing.
Scottish Water: On occasion, there has been localised flooding from the Gryffe Valley Sewer, demonstrating the pressure being placed on current capacity. Scottish Water invested funding for significant investigatory workswhich have now been completed and has included manhole surveys, flow surveys and a CCTV survey of the pipes in the Bridge of Weir, Houston and Crosslee areas. The Gryffe Valley Sewer crosses beneath the River Gryffe several times between Bridge of Weir and Houston. It was suspected that a significant quantity of water from the river was entering the sewer at one or more of these river crossings. However, the investigations contradicted this hypothesis and as such the plans for remedying the problem are not now considered useful.
“We have several well-established members of the trade returning but mostly these will just be ordinary people who have garages and attics to clear out after years of accumulation,” said a spokesman.
Scottish Water are now investigating the feasibility of two further options: up-sizing of the sewer pipe from Houston to Auchens pumping station or construction of a storage tank in the Ardgryffe area. Both of these options would require considerable funding and as such it will be some time before any plans will be confirmed. Houston Community Council have tirelessly pursued this matter and I will work with them to highlight the need for commitments to be made as soon as possible. Planning: Many residents will be aware of the proposals within the Local Development Plan for land at Houston Road and East of Fleming Road to be designated as suitable for housing development. This is green-belt land and is in addition to two brown field sites which are available in the village for housing development. I submitted an objection to this change in designation. The LDP will now be considered by a Scottish Government reporter. I was pleased that the Council designated the land between Manse Crescent and the Neuk as unsuitable for development, given the huge concerns that this well used space would be lost.

Given the fact that the LDP has not yet been confirmed by a Scottish Government Reporter I was surprised to note a planning application has been submitted for the development of twenty new homes at the land between Woodend Lodge and Lonend Cottage on Houston Road. If residents wish further information on this application it can be viewed at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/planning Surgeries: I will be holding surgeries on Tuesday 20th August in Tweedie Hall, Linwood at 7pm and on Wednesday 21st August in the Carrick Centre, Houston at 6.30pm.

Coming Soon... ... to your Co-op store in Houston - a Public Access Defibrillator!
Anyone can use it - the machine does all the work! Kindly donated by the Heartstart Gryffe Group (an initiative by the British Heart Foundation). A cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart suddenly stops working properly. If you suffer a cardiac arrest away from a hospital in the UK today, your chances of survival are only about 5%. Prompt defibrillation is often the only way someone will survive. Early resusitation and prompt defibrillation can result in a greater than 60% chance of survival. The Heartstart Gryffe Group offers free CPR training to local groups or individuals. If you are interested, please contact Kate Jackson on 01505 613676. There is also a Public Access Defibrillator at Bridge of Weir Co-op.
Houston Community Council Houston Community Council wound up for the summer with a busy meeting in June, during which members heard a presentation from the Roads Department regarding potholes and methods for addressing speeding, a regular source of complaint from residents, an update from Scottish Water regarding ongoing investigations in the village and, finally, members heard from a representative of McGill’s Buses regarding the recent takeover of bus services previously operated by Riverside Coaches. With particular reference to the latter, members of the Community Council expressed concerns that already minimal services are to be diluted further, leaving residents without cars with few options for getting to neighbouring localities, and McGill’s have agreed to listen to concerns over a review period lasting 3-6 months. In recognising that McGill’s have agreed to take on these services when they were under no obligation to do so, local residents are nevertheless advised to make their concerns/views on the revised arrangements known to the company by using the Freephone number 08000 516151 as it is only by commenting on the current temporary arrangements that the bus company will be able to gauge the demand, and frequency required, for the foreseeable future. Alternatively, residents can bring their views to the attention of the Community Council by visiting its website on www. houstonvillage.co.uk and leaving a comment on it. The Community Council has also published a list of useful phone numbers on its site to make it easier for local residents to make direct contact with various agencies and local council departments. Indeed, residents are encouraged to make use of the website to draw attention to any issue on which they feel the Community Council may have input. Having recently completed a very successful tree planting project in Houston Park, the Community Council will, after the summer break, be considering potential grant funding options with a view to possible landscaping at the Houston Rd roundabout, given that a number of complaints have been received from local residents regarding flyposting at that location. The Community Council holds its meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the Carrick Centre, from September-November and January-June each session, and any resident wishing to consider becoming a member can find out more through viewing the website, and/or phoning 07854 724174.

kilmacolm & quarriers Village Hall Hits New Heights
A revamped hall in Quarrier’s Village received its finishing touch on Sunday (23rd June) when it was officially opened by Inverclyde Council Leader Stephen McCabe. Fellow local ward councillors Jim MacLeod, David Wilson and James McColgan also attended the opening and were joined by members of QV Council, staff from Quarriers charity and residents. The lift further enhances last year’s extensive upgrading of the historic building, which saw the venue transformed into a thriving hub for village activities thanks to a partnership between residents and the owners, charity Quarriers. Just under a fifth of residents in the village have limited mobility and the lift, funded by a £41,000 award from Inverclyde Council’s Community Facilities Fund, will ensure full access to the upstairs of the hall. The award also funded a new disabled toilet. Cllr Stephen McCabe said: “After seeing first-hand the vision, hard work and enthusiasm that went into transforming Sommerville Weir Hall into the bustling heart of the community it is today, it gave me great pleasure to officially open the access lift. The lift will make this vital resource accessible to the whole community of Quarrier’s Village and beyond. Inverclyde Council is delighted to have been able to support the project.”
Leigh’s Beauty Room
Leigh’s Beauty Room has now opened within Arlene Mitchell Hair and Beauty in Kilmacolm and welcomes clients old and new. Leigh has a BA (HONS) in Complementary Healthcare specialising in Reflexology and an HND in Beauty Therapy. She is also a qualified ‘Lash Perfect’ Semi Permanent Lash Technician. Leigh lives locally in Bridge of Weir and has ten years experience working in salon and spa environments.
Leigh’s Beauty Room offers a wide range of treatments including waxing, Threading, eye treatments, lashes, nails, tanning, Dermalogica facials, Fake bake spray and application tans, Swedish, aromatherapy, hot stone and Indian head massage and reflexology.
Katrina Vine, Quarrier’s Village Council, said: “The hall has really enhanced community life since it re-opened in August last year. Paul Moore, Quarriers chief executive, said: “The addition of a lift is a vital step in making sure that everyone in the community can make use of the wonderful resource. I’d like to thank the Quarrier’s Village Council for all its hard work as well as Inverclyde Council for making this possible.” Sommerville Weir Hall was the first building erected by the founder of Quarriers, William Quarrier. Originally known as Central Building, it was completed on 17th September 1878 and was first used as a school, church and children’s home. Quarriers is a major employer in Inverclyde, employing more than 400 people across its head office and in the 17 projects based in the area.

Dr Paddy McCusker Mrs Eileen McCusker would like to thank the many friends and neighbours who wrote to express their hurt on hearing that Dr Paddy McCusker had passed away very peacefully on 12th July 2013. Dr Paddy McCusker was 92 years old and had a long adventurous and productive life. We came to Kilmacolm 31 years ago and in that time formed many great friendships. Our time here was filled with fun and laughter. Many thanks to the Golf Club members, the Bowling Club members, Bridge friends and neighbours who attended the service in St Fillan’s, Houston. Thanks to Councillor David Wilson who facilitated the transfer of Paddy from Cardiff to Inverclyde Hospital - Dr Paddy would have loved it!
At the Kilmacolm Community Council meeting at the end of June the monthly police report warned that residents should be careful about leaving tools lying around their gardens and sheds unlocked so to prevent opportunist thefts. I would warn residents to be on their guard particularly at this time of year. The police also reported that during the month of June thirteen drivers had been stopped for speeding in Kilmacolm. I have received further complaints of speeding in the village in July, particularly on Port Glasgow Road. I would please ask drivers to be careful about their speed. I had a complaint from a constituent that the new bus company that replaced the previous McGill’s service, going from Kilmacolm to Johnstone, was not stopping at Morrison’s in the town and was not taking passengers up to higher parts of the village. I contacted the council roads services and asked if they could contact SPT and the bus company to see if the matter could be resolved. I was told that in mid July the new bus service had thankfully resolved both issues. I believe another councillor may also have been contacted about the issue. Recently I was asked by committee members of the Sommerville Weir Hall in Quarrier’s Village if I would attend a small event to see the new lift and accessible toilet that now allows disabled people access to the refurbished facility. I was happy to see the new lift and toilet. Well done to Katrina Vine, Jennifer Buchan and other committee members for having done so well with the refurbishments. I attended the Armed Forces Flag Raising ceremony in Greenock’s Clyde Square. Among the dignitaries and invited guests were the Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, members of the armed forces, the clergy and residents from Erskine Homes. The ceremony reminded me of the great sacrifice that our military personnel and their families, past and present, have given for their country. Inverclyde Council’s Parking Plan Consultation which began on the 15th July finishes on the 5th August so there is still some time left for people to submit any comments they may have. Anyone wanting to contact me can do so by phoning me at my council office on 01475-712727 or on my mobile phone 07747 765 839, or by emailing me at jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov.uk or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 ILY.

Dr Patricia MacMahon D Mus (Hons) FRSAMD ARCM LRAM Patricia MacMahon, known locally as Pat Pettinger, received an Honorary Doctorate in Music on 2nd July from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Pat has earned a reputation over many years as a singer, teacher and vocal coach. During her earlier career as a soprano, Pat specialised in concert, recital and oratorio work, frequently recording for BBC. The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) has been a large part of her life, having come from Aberdeen to study in 1961. As well as fulfilling professional engagements, Pat taught singing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for nearly forty years and received a Fellowship in March 2000. Pat has lived in Kilmacolm with her husband Beau for over 40 years: they have three daughters, Susan, Julie and Clare and eight grandchildren. I was in St Columba’s Church 3 days in a row in June attending the end of year service of Kilmacolm Primary School, and the prizegivings of St Columba’s Junior and Senior Schools. KPS P7 traditionally conduct the service and did so with great confidence assisted by musical contributions from all classes. St Columba’s guests of honour Aileen Paterson DA and the former MP Helen Liddell gave very interesting addresses to the pupils. The Senior event ending with the pipe band’s emotional and haunting rendition of Highland Cathedral. The Gryffe Valley Rotary Club does many good deeds. I am well aware through my involvement as vice chair of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park of what the Club have done for instance to assist disabled sailing at Castle Semple. I was pleased to accept their invitation to speak at their July meeting at the River Inn. A fine bunch of men, who enjoy each others company and donate annually a considerable sum to charity. I received a real compliment when thanked by the organiser for my contribution on the evening “we did not expect you to be so amusing!” The parade by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5 Scots through the streets of Port Glasgow was most impressive and well attended by onlookers. It was a proud day for the Argyll’s veteran Association who acted as stewards, and are key in organising the annual Cenotaph services in Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm. Following my request hard standing has been laid at the entrance to the latter Memorial. This will allow the Colour Party to assemble without getting muddy feet while lining up in the order directed by the Parade Marshall. The Kilmacolm/ Johnstone Station bus service is now up and running on the previous route after a few hiccups. An incorrect route was registered with the Commissioner by the new operator and this can take time to change. I am often asked about when the Podiatry service will return to the village. There is a special chair set aside in Greenock for this purpose and we await negotiations between the NHS and the New Surgery. My August surgeries are 17th 11-12 Three Sisters Bake Quarriers Village and the 21st 11-12 the Cargill centre Kilmacolm. I can be contacted by email on david.wilson@inverclyde and by 01475 741969 and 712727 and mobile 07766 992294

kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Rock Choir Members Rock Echo Arena! On Saturday 29th June, the Kilmacolm Rock Choir enjoyed their biggest performance yet, when they joined more than 5,000 fellow ‘Rockies’ for a unique mega-concert at Echo Arena Liverpool. Rock Choir is the UK’s largest and most popular contemporary choir, with more than 16,000 members in over 250 communities. It took many months of planning the show ‘Rock Choir Live!’ which brought together choir members from across the north of England and Scotland. Local Rock Choir Leader Jennifer Sim, a former pupil of St Columba’s School, said “We worked really hard preparing for this fantastic event and it was all worth it. I’m so proud of everyone and it was great to see our flags and banners flying. Being able to sing with thousands of other Rock Choir members from across the country in such a huge and iconic arena was hugely uplifting and inspiring. The sound was just incredible”.
In preparation of their big performance, the Kilmacolm and Greenock Rock Choirs joined together to sing for family and friends at the West Burns Church in Greenock on the last week of the summer term and along the way raised £400 which was donated to the Church. At the end of term, the choir will often sing a few numbers outside the Kilmacolm Community Centre (weather permitting) much to the surprise of local residents. “It’s great fun when the choir perform outside as its not something people are expecting when they head out to the shops for their messages - a choir in full song”, Jennifer said. Local member Anne McGregor, joined Rock Choir when it first started in Kilmacolm in September 2011. Anne says “I have really enjoyed being a member of Rock Choir. It is a type of singing that I am not used to and is introducing me to lots of popular music that I do not usually listen to. The group is a very friendly sociable one and we meet for lunch in the Hub after our Tuesday morning session. Rock Choir is great fun!” If you enjoy singing and would like to come along for a free taster session then make a note; the choir resumes Tuesday 17th September at 10.15am in the Kilmacolm Community Centre. Book online via the website www. rockchoir.com or telephone 01252 714 276.

I was disappointed to miss the Kilmacolm Primary School summer concert at the end of term due to other commitments, but I heard it was a great show. I did however manage to get along to the Port Glasgow High School performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. What a wonderful show, which was up to the very high standard that I have come to expect. Well done to all the young people, staff and parents responsible. The following morning I attended the Armed Forces Day Service of Thanksgiving in Paisley Abbey. The highlight of the Service was the performance by the Inverclyde Schools Senior Choir, who demonstrated once again the fantastic musical talent we have in Inverclyde. Kilmacolm Community Council Inverclyde Windfarm 2020 Renewables Limited has submitted their planning application to Inverclyde Council - Planning Application Reference: 13/0199/IC. They are seeking permission for a ten turbine wind farm on land south of Greenock. The proposed site lies to the west of the B788 Kilmacolm to Greenock ‘Old’ Road on the side of Corlic Hill. Full details of the planning application and reports are available to view in the Kilmacolm Library. If you have any views or comments to make on this proposal you have until the 9 August 2013 to lodge them on the Inverclyde Council Website - go to http://planning.inverclyde.gov. uk/Online/centralDistribution.do?action=dispatch&caseType=Application&ca seNo=13/0199/IC&caseType=Application&caseNo=13/0199/IC and click on Comments. It would also be useful if you mail your views and comments to info@kilmacolmcc.co.uk. The Kilmacolm Community Council will discuss the application and formulate their response at their 27th August 2013 meeting to which the members of the community are invited. Parking As a result of the withdrawal of the Traffic Warden Service by Strathclyde Police and the subsequent deterioration of parking habits, the Inverclyde Council decided to apply to the Scottish Ministers for permission to introduce decriminalised parking enforcement (DPE) within Inverclyde. This will allow the Council to enforce waiting and loading restrictions under civil law. In preparation for the introduction of DPE, the Council is promoting these orders which enable the Council’s Parking Attendants to enforce the restrictions in the named car parks and to also enforce on-street waiting and loading restrictions. As it affects Kilmacolm and Quarriers Village the proposed on-street traffic order for the most part replicates the restrictions currently visible on-street by way of road markings and traffic signs. The main change in the proposed offstreet parking places traffic order is the introduction of a two hour maximum duration of stay in the main Cargill Centre car park during the hours 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday with no return within an hour. On-Street Waiting Restrictions - Proposed Traffic Regulation Order C132 Off-Street Parking Places - Proposed Traffic Regulation Order C134 These proposals are available to view in Kilmacolm Library, or google the about highlighted text. If you have a reason why you feel the proposed action should not go ahead, you should send details of your grounds for objection in writing, before 5th August 2013, quoting the name of the Traffic Regulation Order and the reference number to:Elaine Paterson, Head of Legal and Democratic Services, Municipal Buildings, Greenock, PA15 1LX. Please let the Kilmacolm CC have your comments at info@kilmacolmcc.co.uk.
I received correspondence from Scottish Water to advise me that they were starting the final section of improvement works in the village and it was expected to last approximately three months. The first phase is the installation of a new stretch of water main under the Green Water, which flows into the River Gryffe. This work will take approximately 4-5 weeks and will take place in the fields adjacent to Stepends Bridge; this will have no impact on the B786. The second phase of this work will involve PU and Slip Lining on the water mains under the B786. This will take approximately 8-9 weeks with the B786 reduced from two lanes to one, with temporary traffic lights in use. My surgeries this month are on Thursday 1st August in St Francis Primary School, Port Glasgow, from 6-7pm and Saturday 17th August in Kilmacolm Community Centre, from 10-11am. Abbey Nursery What a fantastic time the children are having at Abbey Nursery this summer. The Grasshoppers started their exploring with a trip to Blair Drummond Safari Park which got the thumbs up for such a lot of things to see and do and kept parents amused with all their questions! Then the summer activities programme kicked off with tennis at Strathgryffe Tennis Club as part of Sports Week, followed by daily BBQs and the opportunity for children to cook their own hot dogs and marshmallows. The Busy Bunnies have been following a jungle theme and singing, reading and exploring anything to do with animals. Then as if on cue we had our hottest week yet and the paddling pools came out for Beach week and all the children cooled off a little, as well an having an opportunity to hunt for buried treasure!! There is no better place to live than Scotland when the sun shines and the staff and children have had lots of fun this year. If parents are thinking about a nursery place at Abbey Nursery we would urge you to contact Beth Morris as soon as possible as we have limited spaces available in some playrooms.
Musical Theatre Summer School....
A week of Acting, Singing & Dancing lessons resulting in a Showcase Performance at The Beacon Arts Centre One week courses for 13 to 21 year olds: • Monday 5th August to Saturday 10th August (10am - 4pm each day)
This is a rare opportunity to work with two musical theatre professionals and perform songs and scenes from Miss Saigon, Oliver, Les Misérables, Grease, West Side Story and Fame. After the success of last year’s summer school, tutors Lynn Anderson and Mark Barclay will again bring 2 x 1 week Musical Theatre Schools at The Beacon. Mark and Lynn jointly tutor Kayos Theatre Company who enjoyed recent success in performing 4 sold out performances of Les Misérables in The Beacon, and have future plans to perform Grease later this year. Lynn Anderson is one of Scotland’s leading singers and the opportunity to be tutored by her for the incredibly low price of £75 for a full week does not come around very often. She is dedicated to helping young people improve their singing voices. If you wish to improve your singing voice and learn the essential breathing techniques that not only strengthen the voice, but more importantly protect it, then come along. Classes will cover all aspects of Musical Theatre performance including acting and dancing. Only 20 places are available each week, early booking will avoid disappointment. Call 01475 723723 or email info@beaconartcentre. co.uk to book.

1st Houston and Crosslee Scout Group
A very busy year for the group seems to have just ended but now it’s time to start up again in August. There was an excellent turnout of parents and children at the recent AGM of the group. A number of prizes were given out to boys from each age group and congratulations go to all the winners. Michael McGee and Lewis Harris deserve special congratulations on achieving their Silver Chief Scout Award. The cubs along with a number of parents recently enjoyed a great day out cycling from Rothesay to Ettrick Bay and back. The weather was very favourable and the boys enjoyed refreshments along the way to keep them cool! The weather was not so good for the Annual Summer camp for the Cubs and Scouts. However this did not deter their enjoyment and the Scouts camped for 2 nights within the Estate Grounds in Houston. Traditional activities of cooking over open fires, trekking, zip slides and water slides were the order of the day but the older Scouts were also due to get a shot of the quad bikes. This year also marks some changes within the committee and with leaders. Special thanks go to Graeme Fairlie, our Group Treasurer for the past 6 years and to Kirsty Duffell who has covered the Secretary role for the past 4 years. A special presentation was made at the AGM by Colin Berry (Group Chairman) who thanked both of them for all their hard work behind the scenes. This year also saw the stepping down of Aileen Wilson the Beaver Leader, Leigh Duffell the Beaver Assistant and Craig Courtney the Explorer Group Leader. Again thanks go to them all for the giving up their spare time to help the sections. These posts have now been covered but the Group Scout Leader would still welcome additional help from any parents willing to take on a future role as a Beaver Leader. Enrolment dates for the new term will be as follows:Beavers:- Monday 19th August (6.30pm to 7.30) Ages 6 to 8 Cubs:- Monday 19th August (7.30pm to 9pm) Ages 8 to 10½ Scouts:- Tuesday 13th August (7.30pm to 9pm) Ages 10½ to 14 Explorers:- Thursday 15th August (7.30pm to 9pm) Ages 14 to 18 Due to high numbers in some sections, priority will be given to children who are already in a section if moving up to the next age group.
Come and have some fun at Kidston Kids! If you are free on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning and are of pre-school age, why not come and join us at Kidston Kids in Kilmacolm. We have available.

Woodlands Nursery
Baby Room News
We are happy to welcome our room leader Julie back from maternity leave after being off for nearly a year and Julie brings along her beautiful daughter Brogan too. We would like to say a huge thank you to Laura who temporary replaced Julie, and did a marvellous job! Water fun was the big attraction this month as we enjoyed playing in the paddling pool both inside and outdoors. The babies loved getting wet and enjoyed bubble play as well, chasing the bubbles and trying to burst them. Tweenie Room News The Tweenie room have been very busy settling our older children into Rising 5s ready for the new term, everyone is excited and looking forward to the move. The Tweenies’ summer programme includes Sports week, Nature week and Pirate week - “look out me hearties”. Rising 5s Room News It’s been a month of mixed emotions for the staff, parents and children of the butterfly group in Rising5s as they entertained everyone at their Graduation Ceremony. Everyone had a lovely buffet lunch and shared lovely stories of their years at Nursery. Rising 5s have been monitoring the development of their new outdoor play area very closely. They are very excited to see diggers and tractors working hard putting everything in its place. We thank everyone who has very kindly helped us with our fundraising, allowing us to start the garden area. The children have been involved in the planning process from the start and have been watching each stage with great Interest as their plans come into reality. They have drawn lots of pictures of how they wish the finished garden to look.
Bridge of Weir Scouts
To finish off the last Scout session before the Summer break 1st Bridge of Weir Scouts headed down to Loch Lomond for a Fun Family Day out. The Scouts spent the day on the water and had great fun being towed behind a speedboat on inflatable rings and bananas, it was hard to tell who had more fun, the Scouts or the parents, Some of the parents brought canoes and kayaks for those who wanted to spend some time in the slower lane,
Out of School Care We are saying a fond farewell to our P7 children who are going on to High School and have sadly outgrown us. We will miss them all loads and wish them well in their future and with their new adventures at High School. They were presented on their last day with a Woodlands’ mug and pens,
and in one way or another everybody got wet. The day was not complete without the ubiquitous barbecue and when the Scouts were not indulging themselves in the water they were indulging on land with some fantastic tasting burgers from our local butchers. Big thanks to all who helped out and a special thank you to John & Craig for the use of their boat. Hope to see everyone back in August.
to keep as a small reminder of their time with us. This month we also received another update about “Jock” the dog we have adopted through the Dog’s Trust. They tell us how he is and what he is getting up to. We feel he is really ours and hope to arrange a visit to see him in Glasgow in the very near future. We have many new children joining us after the summer holidays and our existing children were asked if they would like to be a “buddy” to a new child starting, the response from our children was fantastic and a buddy system to help our new children settle in will be up and running next month. A big warm welcome if you are joining us soon, we are looking forward to meeting you.

Houston Soccer Academy Player of the Year Gala Day - 25th May Houston Soccer Academy kicks off the new season on Saturday 24th August this year and we are always looking for new recruits (boys & girls) between the ages of 4 and 9 to the Academy. The sessions are focused on ensuring the children improve their technical ability, but in a fun and non-pressured environment.
We now have two 11-a-side pitches and a 7-a-side pitch here in Quarriers and with our new changing rooms it gives a great environment to play football. We have teams at all age groups from 1997 to 2006 and we are always looking to add to the squads. Our 11-a-side squads (1997 to 2001) will all start their pre-season training together on Friday 2nd August 6pm to 7.30pm on the playing fields at Quarriers. Quarriers United FC was founded in 2004 with one of our main aims to make local football accessible to all. We want young people of all abilities to play and improve their football in a friendly team environment. Over the years since we started we must be doing something right, because so far we have seen over ten Quarriers players go on to play pro-youth football and two of them to be given the chance to play within the Scotland set up at their age group. The club is Quality Mark Registered and our experienced SFA qualified coaches look to develop each player within their squads to bring them on. Not all of us can play for Scotland but one thing’s for sure we can have great fun playing football and trying.
So if you want to join one of our teams and really enjoy your football please contact our Head Coach Graham Robertson – 07764 287005 who will gladly help you.
The Academy is a non-commercial entity and we only ask for £2 per session towards equipment upkeep. We ask that all children wear appropriate football kit including boots and shin guards.
Quarriers United FC
Eight boats took part, including two from Castle Semple, several from Bardowie and others travelled from south of the border. The Access boats did not race at all on the Saturday due to the weather conditions. Sunday was bright sunny and warm with some good wind and plenty of sailing. The weekend had been very successful and the participants had indicated they would like to return next year. Jon and David (Hill) presented the prizes to the winners in warm sunshine!
24 Hr Fund Raising Event
The Club raised around £770 (net) over the weekend from sponsorship, sales of plants, books, tombola and tablet, so a big well done to everyone who took part or sponsored. A huge thank you was given to everyone - so many people had contributed there were too many to name individually. Saturday afternoon provided some excellent sailing weather with some of the best wind of the season. Sunday morning the gusts increased making very tough and unforgiving conditions causing a couple of capsizes - especially around buoy 7 a very gusty area. However despite several incidents of blocks falling off the boom, the Blue boat was the overall winner - such a shame the Red boat had a capsize so close to the finish!! The field proved to be very popular for camping and Duncan was up early providing his famous bacon butties/rolls for everyone. Unfortunately the wind conditions on Sunday morning were just too strong for the cadets to have their planned race but a few did go out in oppies for a while.
Lochwinnoch Gala Day 8th June
The Club was pleased to be able to support the day displaying a GP14 and two oppies - for cadets proved a popular distraction for youngsters! For further info see website www/castlesemplesc.co.uk

Iain Takes on Europe’s Best Young Sailors Houston’s Iain McLaughlan, a 5th year pupil at Gryffe High School has been scaling the heights of European youth sailing and is putting together a great set of results this season. Last year Iain who sails a Laser Radial was selected for the Royal Yachting Association’s Transition Squad and RYA Scotland’s Elite Squad following a season where he finished up
the UK’s top Laser Radial sailor of his age. Entering the new season and hoping to maintain his momentum, Iain was pleased that the RYA’s UK Youth Championships were scheduled for Largs Sailing Club which is Iain’s home club. The regatta, which is held in the Easter school holidays, followed a week when the country was virtually shut down by snow and although the bitter temperatures continued the event was saved by a week of sunshine. In mixed wind conditions Iain coped well with the cold and the competition to finish 10th overall and sixth boy. In fact, although the boys’ competition was won by Wales’ Tom Williams, Scotland finished the event with the top 14, 15 and 16 year olds which surely bodes well for the future. That result was sufficient to gain 16 year old Iain an invitation to join the RYA’s team GBR Youth Squad which comprises the top 10 under 19 boys in the UK.
Maggie’s Charity Mixed Open Greensomes Gleddoch Ladies Golf Club are hosting a Mixed Open Greensomes Charity Golf Day on Sunday 15th September 2013, tee times from 9am until 2pm. The entry fee per couple is £20 and all profit will go to Maggie’s. This event is held every two years at Gleddoch in memory of a much loved Lady Captain, Sheila Hughes, who was a great supporter of the Maggie’s charity. We welcome entries from all golfers, catering is available at Gleddoch all day. Please contact our Secretary to enter at the email ladymarion1st@ talktalk.net
After the good performance at the Youths, Iain was one of the GBR team who attended the European Youth Championships in Split, Croatia in June. Amongst three hundred of Europe’s best young sailors and a few from as far afield as Australia and Singapore, Iain had to contend with conditions that couldn’t have been more different from Largs. With temperatures in the thirties and fierce sunshine, staying hydrated and avoiding sunburn was crucial in the six or seven hour sessions on the water. Iain finished the event as one of two prizewinning Brits, taking sixth place in the under 17 category with Wales’ Ellie Meopham fifth under 19. Iain will now try to balance keeping his progress going with maintaining his performance at school and the staff of Gryffe High have been enormously supportive, both allowing time off for travel and competitions and helping Iain manage the workload. With the well known pressures of the highers to contend with, this team effort and the support of RYA and RYA Scotland will be a great help. When asked about his success, Iain said “It’s a big team effort. As well as the support of the school and RYA, a lot of what I do is made possible by the support I get from the Mudhook Yacht Club Trust, Renfrewshire Sports Network and Tunnocks, and of course my parents.” Iain’s next major competitions are the UK Laser Nationals at Paignton in Devon and the Men’s Radial Worlds in Dun Laoghaire in Ireland.
Birkmyre Mini Rugby Birkmire mini rugby section will commence training for the 2013/14 season on Sundays starting on the 11th August from 1pm to 2.30pm at Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm. Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club Junior Newton Shield Winners 2013
Another year of competing has now ended in an exciting playoff final against Cochrane Castle, played over Ranfurly Castle GC on Sunday 14th July. Old Course Ranfurly boys were victorious 5-1, in a very close fought final, which could have gone either way. The team line up (see photo right) was Conor Toal, Josh Telfer, Louis Oliver and Angus Bell, all of whom have been regulars in the team over the season. Stepping in for the final was Mark Simpson and Michael Dorrian, having lost two of our top players Ross Robertson and Jamie Stewart to other commitments. Considering we have not won the Shield for 22 years, it was a fantastic performance by all boys concerned. The future looks bright for the Junior Section. We are very proud of their achievements and the manner in which they performed on and off the course. Well done to all concerned and here’s to next season.
Ladies’ Open
The Winners of the Old Course Ranfurly’s Ladies’ Open Ramphorlie Quaich were Gill Cole of Ralston and Jen Owen of Old Ranfurly (pictured left). Despite the early adverse weather conditions and heavy wind, the day was a great success.

The players began their pre-season training in early July in preparation for the tough season ahead with a strong squad packed with old and new faces, a well-rounded team mixing experience with youth, energy and enthusiasm. Birkmyre’s first game is the annual Renfrew Tournament on the 10th August featuring local rivals Renfrew, Bishopton and Paisley rugby clubs. After strong results against Bishopton and Renfrew in last seasons league campaign and Paisley playing in the same division as the Bears this season, the tournament looks to be an exciting affair and the perfect way to kick off this years rugby. The tournament is being held at Birkmyre Park in Kilmacolm this year. The 10th August also sees the RBS open day for the club. A great day for children who are interested in taking up rugby. The open day will feature a Scotland international star at the park in Kilmacolm to meet the children and give coaching tips. Kids of all ages are welcome down for a taste of rugby and a great day out. Adult training is on every Tuesday and Thursday from half seven at Birkmyre park in Kilmacolm. All are welcome down regardless of experience. For additional information contact Donald Hall on 07799154597.

Kilmacolm Tennis Club Wanted – Andy Murrays (New and Old)
Like everyone else, members of Kilmacolm Tennis Club were delighted to watch Andy Murray’s fantastic win at Wimbledon. Encouraged by that success, and the good weather, the Club has seen an increased interest in tennis this summer and would encourage anyone who is interested in either taking up the sport or rediscovering their tennis talents to contact either Graham Robertson (01505 615344) or Sian Nicol (01505 872208). A warm welcome is extended to all. You don’t need to be another Andy Murray as we have all standards and ages playing at the club, ranging from juniors to those who would prefer not to disclose their ages but still enjoy a good hit. In addition, we offer a full coaching service including individual lessons and group sessions including Cardio Tennis for those looking for a different way to keep fit. For information on the coaching contact Gulio Spella (07931 751468). New members get their first lesson free. The club held its annual Ruth Campbell Mixed Doubles Tournament on Saturday 27th July and fun was had by all who attended. Results in next month’s Advertizer. The club BBQ which was postponed in June has now been rescheduled for Saturday 17th August and will start at 2pm. A mixture of tennis, burgers, sausages & salad will be on the menu. While always looking forward, the club is also keen to retain its heritage and the club is therefore interested in getting copies of any photographs of the club through its long history. If you have any photographs or slides of the club or past players in action we would be really grateful if you would get in touch with either Graham or Sian. And finally, the club uses a lot of tennis balls which last for a few matches then become too soft and hairy for use at the club. We would therefore welcome suggestions for anywhere that may find a good home for old tennis balls. Again please contact either Graham or Sian with any suggestions. The Garden in August
Below are a few perennials that will light up your garden in late summer and beyond.
Salvia Nemorosa ‘Caradonna’
A hardy plant flowering through June until October. Its greygreen foliage and deep blue spiky flowers make it attractive to butterflies and bees. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil at the front of the border. Remove faded blooms to encourage repeat flowering.
Knautia Macedonica
A hardy perennial flowering from July until October. It has lovely deep purplish-red pincushion-type flowers, complementing silver foliage plants and making it very attractive to bees. Plant in full sun, in well-drained soil at the front of the border. Remove dead flowers to promote more blooms.
Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ [the Coneflower]
The wide, black-eyed, single, yellow daisy flowers of Rudbeckia are what make it one of many gardeners’ top ten perennials. This variety has an incredibly long flowering season, from mid-summer right through to the middle of autumn. It is short enough not to need staking, and does not spread so fast that frequent division is necessary, making it a very easy-care plant. Use it between other plants in a flower border, as it tolerates light shade, to extend the flowering season late into the year.
Lawn Care for August
Continue to mow regularly at low cutting height. Trim edges. If weeds are still prevalent then apply a lawn weed treatment when the soil is moist. If clover exists then rake lawn before mowing. Information source:www. l a w n a n d m o w e r. c o m / L a w n Calendar.aspx
Paisley Abbey’s 850 Anniversary Rose
“Paisley Abbey” - a beautiful new perfumed shrub rose with bright red blooms and described as hardy and perfect for our Scottish climate has been bred by Harkness of Hitchin to mark the 850th anniversary of the foundation of Paisley Abbey. The rose will be launched at Hampton Court in July and at Ayr Flower Show in Rozelle Estate on 2nd-4th August. The rose should appeal to gardeners in the local area and would be an ideal way to mark a special occasion or to give to family and friends. Orders for bare root roses which cost £11.95 are being taken now. Details are available at the Abbey Shop – open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 3.30pm. Delivery will be from November this year. For those who want to wait for them, potted roses will be available from spring 2014. Order forms and details are also available on the Abbey’s website at www.paisleyabbey.org.uk

As we look back on a wonderful July, the weather brought visitors in large numbers to the estate. Our children’s play areas were certainly put through their paces, especially the pirate ship. We saw a rise in the use of our barbeque areas, and our overnight camping was a great success, including our new large barbeque pit at the centre of the camping ground. Our gardens have shot into bloom with visitors coming from far and near to spend a relaxing few hours strolling through the gardens and enjoying refreshments in our tea room. We had another successful Duck Race with our Finlaystone ducks trying their best to navigate the waterfalls and streams to victory. Willie our Head Gardner has been hard at work ensuring the plants and shrubs receive plenty of water in the hot July sun. The Rangers have been delivering a host of entertaining and educational events to nurseries and school children attending the estate and our Mini Beast hunt, Den building, Scavenger hunt and first Nature walks have been enjoyed not only by school parties but also those having birthday parties at the estate.

All age groups can apply to become volunteers, if you would like to join our team on a regular or casual basis, then please approach me in the estate or call reception for more details. Many thanks go to all our present and previous volunteers; your help is greatly appreciated Are you getting married soon? pets How to recognise and treat heatstroke in dogs.
Dogs are not as efficient at controlling their body temperature in hot weather as we are and are designed to conserve heat. Because of this, symptoms can suddenly develop and can escalate into an emergency situation in a matter of minutes. Heat stroke in dogs is a very serious condition. Knowing how to treat a dog experiencing heat stroke may be vital to saving your dog’s life.
• • • • • • • • • •
React quickly if you notice that your dog is showing some or all of the following heat stroke symptoms: Difficulty or unusual breathing - rapid & loud Extreme thirst Weakness and/or fatigue Frequent vomiting Disorientation A bright red tongue & pale gums Skin around muzzle or neck doesn’t snap back when pinched Collapse or coma Thick saliva Increased heart rate
If you suspect that your dog has heatstroke, immediately take them to a shady spot or into a cool indoors room. If possible, take them into a building with air conditioning or locate a fan. Depending on what you have available, do your best to cool down your dog quickly. Some possible ways to do this include: •
Drape wet towels over your dog. Don’t leave wet cloths in place for too long though as the towel will become a layer of insulation.
•
Pour cool water over the dog’s head and body or gently hose them using a dribble or light spray of water.
•
Where it is possible, submerge your dog in a bathtub or tank of cool (not cold) water.
•
Never use ice water or ice as his will close the skin pores, shrink the skin’s surface vessels and can exacerbate the heat stroke.
Fan the dog and spread their fur open using your fingers, to allow the air to flow through. When your dog comes around, try to give them a small quantity of water to drink. Contact your veterinary surgeon immediately for more advice and to have the dog checked to ensure there are no complications. PetVets can be contacted on 01505 800366.
Re-homing Pets
Can you offer a home to any of our featured pets?
Murphy is a 5-7 year old Patterdale Terrier. He likes to play with other dogs and run about in the garden. Murphy needs an adult home only where the family have had experience with rescue dogs before. Murphy can be an excitable boy so would benefit from a nice quiet home that could continue with training.
Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre, 315 Hamilton Road, Uddingston, Glasgow, G71 7SL. Open: 12noon - 4pm (including weekends); 12noon- 7.30pm on Tuesdays; closed: Wednesdays
Inverclyde Cats
Reggie has come to be re-homed following a difficult change of circumstances, a lovely cat who is laid back, used to being well treated in a quiet home. Likely to be able to live with a family however the house would have to be fairly quiet, possibly with older children. He is friendly and until now has had limited outdoor access, a safe garden away from busy roads would be an ideal location for re-homing this boy. Contact the Inverclyde Branch please call us on 07740 947160. All rehomings are subject to a successful home visit.
Wriggles - Age: 2: Staffordshire Bull Terrier Wriggles is a sweet girl who loves everyone she meets. She is looking for a new owner that will give her all the time she needs and in return she will show how much love she has to give. Wriggles would suit a family home with older children. If you can offer Wriggles a loving home, please call and quote ref 261332. To contact the centre about any animals, please call 03000 999 999 or visit www.scottishspca.org/rehoming
Renfrewshire Cats
Jasper and Ebony are lovely wee 18 month old cats (brother and sister) and they would love to be rehomed together. They would like a new home where they would be able to go outdoors. They are very affectionate wee cats. To contact the Renfrewshire Branch on 0141 876 4133. All rehomings are subject to a successful home visit.

village news (cont.) howwood & elderslie Shereen celebrates half way mark for local hospice appeal
kilmacolm & quarriers
Visit to Mérignies - a twinning update A small delegation from the Kilmacolm and Mérignies Twinning Steering Group visited Mérignies in late June for an overnight stay to assess if the approach to twin the two villages was a realistic proposal.
Broadcaster Shereen Nanjiani celebrated the £480,000 raised since the appeal was launched in January for the St Vincent’s Hospice £1 million 25th Anniversary Appeal during a visit to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. The broadcaster said: “It’s wonderful that the appeal has been so well supported already, I’m delighted with its success. St Vincent’s Hospice is a crucial part of everyday life – it offers local patients and their families a real lifeline, when they are often finding it difficult coping with illness. Shereen added: “The hospice cares for not just cancer patients, but other diagnoses such as Motor Neurone, heart failure, renal failure, Multiple Sclerosis and dementia.” Chief Executive, Kate Lennon said: “At St Vincent’s Hospice we want to maintain and develop our crucial services for the communities in Renfrewshire and beyond. We need everyone to get involved in our 25th Anniversary celebrations to raise £1 million, so that we can continue caring for people living with life limiting illnesses, making such a huge difference to them and their families.” For a free fundraising pack and to get involved in the 25th Anniversary celebration and £1 million appeal contact info@svh.co.uk or 01505 705635.
The visit had been very well organised and proved very interesting. The Mérignies Steering Group, led by Mayor Francis Melon, did everything to make our visit informative and enjoyable. Mérignies is a modern community, approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes drive from Paris, very close to the city of Lille and it still bears the scars of two World Wars. First impressions were how similar to Kilmacolm it is. Driving into Mérignies was almost like driving down a road in our own village: very leafy, green and with many large properties in well kept gardens. The socio economic structure is also broadly similar. Whilst the population of Mérignies is, at 2,500, smaller than that of Kilmacolm, it is actively growing. They have a sports centre for football, tennis, basketball and boules (all outdoors) and indoors there are two gym/multi-purpose halls and a further hall which also doubles as a stage for plays and dancing displays. There is also a small café space in the sports centre which is effectively a combination of our own sporting facilities and community centre. Mérignies has a cycle path created from an old railway line, and a local lake close to the village centre, while the primary school and public library are very similar to those in Kilmacolm. Local industry is in the form of a spring water bottling plant which sits just outside the village. The Primary School is a modern building that caters for children from the age of around 2-10 years. We visited their excellent ‘before-and-after-school’ provision for working parents and it was obvious that children are at the heart of this village. Like Kilmacolm, the children have to leave the village and go to local towns for secondary and further education and around 40% have a private secondary education.
Retirement On 2nd of June, the Rev David Stewart conducted his last service in Howwood before his retirement after 12 years in Howwood and 38 years in the Ministry. It was a busy service that included
a baptism, Sunday School Prizegiving and an All-Age Communion. The Congregation, Kirk Session and School marked the event by giving David and his wife, Margie, gifts including a garden bench for their new house.
Golf has had an important part to play in the development of the local infrastructure and of the village. The Golf Course in Mérignies is the vision of a local farmer turned entrepreneur. He has already built one 18 hole course (or two nine hole courses) with another nine holes about to be completed. A final fourth nine hole course will open in 2015. The entire layout has been designed by a professional golfer and this enterprise has been part funded by selling land for the building of high end properties which has already increased the population of the village. The golf club, which has an excellent restaurant, already hosts national competitions and is fast becoming a centre of golfing excellence. Funding from the golf development has helped build an extension to the Primary School amongst other things. Plans are also in place for an eventual hotel and spa complex at the golf course. The main difference between the two villages is the lack of shops and cafés in Mérignies village centre with only a bakers, hairdressers, dog groomers and a corner shop visible. There is not the same sense of bustle that you find in Kilmacolm. Most shopping is done at the local supermarket just outside the village or at a mall a few miles away. Lille provides the main shopping centre and it is only about 20 minutes away, again similar to our distance from either Braehead or Glasgow.
Another difference is that the Mayor of the Mérignies community has much more control over local spending than we do here which gives them more autonomy when decisions are being taken such as with the twinning. Kilmacolm’s Steering Group will have to source funds via donation or by subscription to allow us to move forward. Mérignies is obviously a good place to live, particularly for young families, but it may perhaps not be everyone’s idea of a resort for a holiday. It sits in a historically interesting part of France and our experience shows that anyone visiting from Kilmacolm will be afforded a warm welcome and will have a very enjoyable stay. This was confirmed when a member of the Steering Group recently stayed overnight on a private, unannounced visit. More important however, we all felt that twinning between the two villages could benefit Kilmacolm clubs, organisations and groups of all ages and activities. The children in both villages could learn from one another through language and sport, perhaps using Skype for younger age groups. The French Steering Group is keen to visit Kilmacolm and we have tentatively suggested a weekend in early November. More information will be forthcoming in the next few months once arrangements are agreed. We are very grateful to those organisations who donated funds to help with the early stages of our research and to those who have offered support if and when the twinning goes ahead. Further funding and other support is now being sought, and a meeting of local organisations and any other members of the community who would like to attend is being arranged to establish the level of commitment to the twinning option by those organisations and individuals. This will take place on Wednesday 28th August at the Cargill Centre at 7pm. For more information or to reserve a place at the meeting, please email: fionascott1@btinternet.com
