What prompted you to photograph people’s eyes? In my life I have had the great fortune of profoundly confronting myself with many people: from politicians and Hollywood celebrities to the poorest and most marginalized individuals. Until I came to feel the desire to restore the same dignity and value to all human beings, regardless of their life choices and social conditionings, to make each one feel themselves, metaphorically, an artwork, and to put man, the essence of creation, at the very center of the scene. But why did you choose precisely to photograph the eye? I decided to connect the representation of this idea to the eye, as an organ symbolizing the uniqueness of each human being, apart from any detail that can reveal the subject’s age and sex. One’s own eye as a work of art that allows us to observe ourselves introspectively and provocatively invites us to re-establish visual contact with our neighbor. What does it feel like to photograph the eye and thus the soul of a person? It is an emotional moment of intense intimacy: I see a part of that person that even he has never seen. Then I ask a few questions having to do with his feelings and his way of perceiving the world and I write the answers on the back of the picture, to symbolize our most hidden and fragile part.

Cosa ti l’ha spinta a fotografare gli occhi delle persone? Nella mia vita ho avuto la grande fortuna di confrontarmi in maniera profonda con tante persone: da politici e celebrities di Hollywood ai più poveri ed emarginati. Finché ho voluto restituire uguale dignità e valore a tutti gli esseri umani, prescindendo dalle loro scelte di vita e dai condizionamenti sociali, per fare sentire ciascuno metaforicamente un’opera d’arte e per rimettere l’uomo, essenza della creazione, al centro della scena. Ma perché proprio l’occhio? Ho deciso di legare la rappresentazione di questa idea all’occhio, come organo che simboleggia l’unicità di ciascun essere umano, estraniato da ogni dettaglio che riconduca all’età ed al sesso del soggetto. Il proprio occhio come opera d’arte che consente di osservarci introspettivamente ed invita provocatoriamente a ristabilire il contatto visivo con il nostro prossimo. Cosa si prova a fotografare l’occhio e quindi l’anima delle persone? È un momento emozionante di fortissima intimità: vedo una parte di quella persona che anch’essa non ha mai visto. Poi faccio alcune domande legate ai sentimenti ed al modo di percepire il mondo e le risposte le scrivo sul retro del quadro, per simboleggiare la nostra parte più nascosta e fragile.
