He was born 130 years ago. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of his death. But the most important anniversary is the one that celebrates one hundred years since the creation of his most famous work of art, Fountain, which was bound to greatly influence most of the artwork that followed. In 1917, Marcel Duchamp, the artist of the readymades, a restless and mysterious man with a great sense of humor, paid a six-dollar fee to stage the work at the exhibition by New York’s Society of Independent Artists. It was a porcelain urinal, of the kind still used today in men’s public toilets. And even the heated debate it gave rise to is the same raging now among art critics. Can it be called “art”? Can the focus of art shift from technique to intellectual interpretation? Doubts are still powerful. A fountain of doubts. Pressing. Urgent. Just like pee.

Nasceva 130 anni fa. L’anno prossimo saranno i 50 anni dalla sua scomparsa. Ma l’anniversario più importante è quello che segna ora i 100 anni della sua opera simbolo, quella Fontana destinata a inondare con gli zampilli della sua influenza moltissima dell’arte che è venuta dopo. Marcel Duchamp, il readymade-man, l’inguaribile irrequieto, l’enigmatico umorista, pagò nel 1917 i dovuti sei dollari per esporre una sua opera alla Society of Independent Artists di New York. Era un orinatoio, di quelli che nei bagni pubblici per uomini si adoperano pure ai nostri giorni. Anche le polemiche che suscitò sono identiche a quelle in cui oggi annegano tanti critici. È davvero arte? Può contare l’idea e non la tecnica? Ancora ci si arrovella. Fontane di dubbi. Stringenti. Pungenti. Urgenti. Come la pipì.
