Everything happened by chance. I graduated in Architecture in 1970 from the Sapienza University in Rome. After a one-year internship in Rome, I moved to South Africa where I worked for about two years in a large studio with offices in Pretoria and Johannesburg. It was a very interesting experience, not only for the language barrier, but a great experience from a professional point of view in general. By contrast, apartheid was still in force at the time. In 1972, my sister started working for the Consortium founded by the Aga Khan, in some way retracing our Sardinian origins after several years spent in Rome. While I was in Italy visiting my mother and her, I had the opportunity to meet André Ardoin, lawyer and right-hand man of the Aga Khan, In the construction of the Costa Smeralda©. Our meeting quickly developed into a friendship and he asked me to join their team of architects in Costa Smeralda. Just enough time to hand in my notice at the studio in South Africa and by the

Tutto è cominciato in maniera casuale. Mi sono laureato in Architettura nel 1970, alla Sapienza di Roma. Dopo un anno di Tirocinio a Roma mi trasferii in Sudafrica, dove mi trattenni per circa due anni a lavorare per un grosso studio di Pretoria e di Johannesburg.

Era una esperienza molto interessante, certamente per la lingua ma soprattutto una bella esperienza sotto l’aspetto professionale. Per contro, all’epoca c’era l’apartheid all’epoca. Nel ’72 mia sorella aveva iniziato a lavorare per il Consorzio fondato dall’ Aga Khan, ripercorrendo a ritroso le nostre origini sarde dopo anni a Roma. Tornato in Italia per visitare mia madre e lei, ho modo di conoscere il braccio destro di Aga Khan nella costruzione della Costa Smeralda©, l’avvocato André Ardoin. Scatta una immediata affinità e mi propone di entrare nel team di architetti della Costa Smeralda. Il tempo del preavviso al mio studio in Sudafrica e all’inizio del ’73 sono in Costa Smeralda.

beginning of 1973, I was already in Costa Smeralda. If that was the prologue, the next phase was the first chapter of my long adventure in the company of the prince, which lasted more than 50 years. The Aga Khan was only 8 years older than me at that time, but had a very determined vision with clear plans about the future. He was a visionary as well as a pragmatic man. He knew how to interact with the best professionals in every sector, but also to train those who would be left in charge of the project in the future and had a close connection to this land. Just like me. During a period of hiatus at work on the coast he suggested that I go to United States and take a Degree of Master of Architecture in Urban Design at Harvard University, just like he had done. And so I left. I faced many difficulties but the Prince always supported me, not only financially but also psychologically. It was one of his qualities: he knew how to take care of everything and everyone.

It was not a way to control people, but rather a sense of participation and belonging.

Se questo è il prologo, qui inizia il primo capitolo della mia lunga avventura con il principe, durata più di 50 anni. L’ Aga Khan all’epoca aveva solo 8 anni più di me, ma uno sguardo deciso che si allungava senza sforzo sul futuro. Un visionario allo stesso tempo pragmatico che sapeva circondarsi dei migliori professionisti di ogni settore ma anche formare coloro che domani avrebbero preso in mano le redini del progetto e erano intimamente legati a questa terra. Come lo ero io. In un momento di stasi dei lavori sulla costa, mi propone di andare negli Stati Uniti, alla Harward University per un Master of Architecture in Urban Design. Parto, le difficoltà non sono poche ma il Principe mi supporta non solo economicamente ma anche moralmente. Era una sua caratteristica: riusciva a occuparsi di tutto e di tutti.

Ma non era controllo, piuttosto partecipazione e senso di appartenenza.

Il rapporto con il Principe è stato un rapporto molto impattante

My relationship with the Prince was very impactful and important for me from a professional and human point of view. Thanks to him, I had the opportunity to work with the best architects in the world: in Sardinia with Jacques Coüelle, Savin Coüelle, Michele and Giancarlo Busiri Vici, Luigi Vietti, and Antonio Simon Mossa, but also with other professionals of various sectors such as environmental science, real estate, and tourism. I also travelled a lot because of him: I have been to Europa, United States, the Caribbean and Asia.

I worked for Sasaki in Boston, the largest landscape architecture firm in the United States. All of this was a great opportunity for professional development, and in particular, I learnt to have great respect for the landscape that had inspired Karim.

From a human point of view, his natural empathy with everyone, not just his peers, and the need to research and learn before each new project was an example for me. And last but not least, his rigour, which was not strictness but extreme moral integrity.

Grazie a lui ho avuto l’occasione di entrare in contatto con i migliori architetti del mondo: in Sardegna con Jacques Coüelle, Savin Coüelle, Michele e Giancarlo Busiri-Vici, Luigi Vietti, Antonio Simon Mossa ma anche con altri professionisti del settore ambientale, del settore immobiliare, del settore turistico in generale. Per lui ho viaggiato moltissimo: in Europa, Stati Uniti, Caraibi and Asia. Ho lavorato alla Sasaki a Boston, il più grande studio di architettura del paesaggio degli Stati Uniti. Tutto questo è stato un arricchimento professionale molto importante, che mi ha insegnato in primis il grande rispetto per il paesaggio che aveva ispirato Karim.

Dal punto di vista umano, la sua empatia trasversale, non rivolta solo ai suoi pari, la necessità di approfondire e conoscere prima di ogni nuovo progetto sono stati di esempio per me.

E non ultimo il rigore, che non era rigidità, ma una estrema correttezza morale.

The route of Monte Zoppu: unique panorama TRACES OF RURAL LIFE, TO ENJOY A WONDERFUL VIEW OF THE NORTH-EAST COAST

PEVERO HEALTH TRAIL, A WELLNESS PATHWAY THAT BEGINS IN THE PEVERO AND ROMAZZINO AREA AND RUNS FOR 13 KM

T

hey’re named after the typical plant species of the mediterranean maquis: lavender, rosemary, cistus, myrtle, lentisk, broom, strawberry tree, juniper, euphorbia, honeysuckle and tamarisk.

These are the eleven fitness stations that punctuate the Pevero Health Trail, a wellness pathway that begins in the Pevero and Romazzino area and runs for 13 kilometres, taking in the bays of Porto Liccia and Grande Pevero. A network of unpaved tracks surrounded by unspoilt nature that crosses the wildest and most authentic part of the Gallura coastline in the north-east of Sardinia. Inaugurated some years ago by the Costa Smeralda Consortium, the hiking trail - which can also be enjoyed on a mountain bike - winds across the

Sono le undici stazioni fitness disseminate lungo il sentiero del Pevero Health Trail, un percorso salutare che partendo dalla zona del Pevero e Romazzino, percorre tredicimila metri passando per la baia di Porto Liccia e la baia del Grande Pevero. Una rete di stradine sterrate, immerse nella natura incontaminata, che attraversano la parte più autentica e selvaggia della costa gallurese a nord est della Sardegna.

Ciò che resta di un vecchio stazzo, casa usata anticamente dai pastori che abitavano questo angolo di Gallura, è raggiungibile a piedi. Lo stazzo rappresenta una testimonianza della vita rurale di questa zona, Da qui, proprio dalla cima di Monte Zoppu si apre una vista mozzafiato sulla destinazione Costa Smeralda®.

300 hectares of rocky landscape, f rom any point of which you can admire the bays and inlets of the coastline while immersed in a multitude of colours and smells of the luxuriant plant life.

There are two routes to challenge walkers: the Energy path, seven kilometres with a series of fitness stations, and the Relax path, also seven kilometres, which follows the ancient tracks and typical dry stone walls.

Along the way you can visit the small Madonna dello Speronello on Grande Pevero bay, which commemorates the tragic flood of Montalto di Castro. Later you come to Lu Rottu, where wheat was once processed, and the Stazzo di Monte Zoppu, testament of the ancient farming and herding tradition of this part of Gallura.

Due i percorsi nei quali ci si può cimentare: il sentiero Energy, lungo sette chilometri, caratterizzato dalle stazioni di attrezzi per fitness,e il sentiero Relax, anch’esso di circa sette chilometri che consente di percorrere i vecchi sentieri e muretti a secco. Lungo questo tracciato è possibile raggiungere la piccola Madonna dello Speronello sul golfo del Grande Pevero, che ricorda la tragica alluvione di Montalto di Castro. Ci si imbatterà poi nel Lu Rottu, dove in passato avveniva la lavorazione del grano e nello Stazzo di Monte Zoppu, testimonianza della tradizione agropastorale di questa zona della Gallura.

Combining the great Sardinian cultural tradition, remaining faithful to the vision which enhanced this unique destination and launching special content to inaugurate the tourist season are the foundations on which we have based this adventure.

The prize given to each winner is a ‘simple’ stone. Each stone is made from a material typically found on our island such as basalt, granite, limestone or marble: it is the practical and metaphorical demonstration of an Award which is deeply rooted in this land, has solid foundations and has survived over time.

orn in Nuoro, Sardinia, Marcello Fois now lives and works in Bologna. His literary journey includes a remarkable body of work, among which are Picta (winner of the Calvino Prize, 1992), In Sardegna non c’è il mare (2012), Nel tempo di mezzo (shortlisted for both the Campiello and Strega prizes in 2012), the poetry collection L’infinito non finire (2018). For several years, Fois has also served on the jury for the Costa Smeralda Prize.

Can you share an anecdote that sums up your relationship with your homeland?

Every time I arrive back home in Sardinia, the very first question people ask is: “When are you leaving again?” At first, I took it the wrong way – as if they couldn’t wait to get rid of me.

But over time, I realised that question actually holds a quiet anxiety about my imminent departure. It reflects the pain of separation, something that defines us islanders more than we might care to admit.

Nato a Nuoro in Sardegna, vive e lavora a Bologna. Tra i tanti libri di Marcello Fois ricordiamo Picta (premio Calvino 1992), In Sardegna non c’è il mare (2012), Nel tempo di mezzo (finalista al premio Campiello e al premio Strega 2012), il libro in versi L’infinito non finire (2018). L’autore, da alcuni anni, è nella giuria del Premio Costa Smeralda. Lo abbiamo intervistato per farci raccontare qualcosa di lui, della sua Sardegna e dei suoi romanzi.

Ci racconta un aneddoto emblematico del suo rapporto con la sua terra d’origine?

Ogni volta che arrivo a casa, in Sardegna, la prima domanda che mi fanno è: “quando riparti?”.

All’inizio la prendevo un po’ male sembrava sempre che volessero liberarsi di me, poi, nel tempo ho scoperto che in quella domanda, al contrario, c’è un senso di ansia per la ripartenza e quindi lo ‘strazio’ per il distacco che da sempre, come isolani, ci contraddistingue.

Sardinia appears often in your novels...

Nobody ever wonders why Hugo wrote about Paris or Dostoyevsky about Saint Petersburg. I’m Sardinian, from Nuoro - If I want to be authentic, I have to start in my own backyard.

Did your calling for writing first emerge in Sardinia?

I was eleven when I wrote my first “novel”. It was titled L’Evasione, and it filled one whole side of a sheet of lined protocol paper. Almost as long as Recherce. And yes, I was in Nuoro at the time.

Is there a particular place on the island that moves you more than any other?

There’s a stretch of valley that begins in Marreri, winds through the Lula crossroads, and continues towards Galtellì and then Orosei. It’s a flawless place that never fails to move me – visually, yes, but even its scents stay with me.

What would you recommend a friend to visit in Sardinia?

In that order: Cala Liberotto, Aggius, and the MAN. Cala Liberotto is part of the Orosei coastline, nestled

Nei suoi romanzi la Sardegna è spesso presente...

Nessuno si chiede perché Hugo scrivesse di Parigi o Dostoevskij di San Pietroburgo. Sono sardo, nuorese, se voglio essere credibile devo partire dal cortile di casa. È in Sardegna che ha incontrato la vocazione per la scrittura?

A undici anni ho scritto il mio primo ‘romanzo’. Si intitolava L’evasione era lungo una facciata di foglio protocollo. Quasi come la Recherche. E certo, sì, ero a Nuoro.

Qual è, nella sua Isola, il luogo che la incanta più di tutti?

Il tratto di valle che da Marreri attraverso il bivio di Lula, conduce verso Galtellì e poi Orosei. È un luogo perfetto che non smette mai di commuovermi.

Visivamente, ma anche olfattivamente.

Cosa consiglierebbe di visitare ad un amico?

Nell’ordine: Cala Liberotto, Aggius, il MAN. Il primo è il litorale oroseino tra Capo Comino e Cala Gonone: piccole cale, lunghe spiagge, anse rocciose e mare. Il secondo è quello che io ritengo

between Capo Comino and Cala Gonone. It offers tiny coves, long beaches, rocky inlets, and pristine sea. Aggius, to me, is the most beautiful village in Sardinia – a painterly place with a certain Cubist, severe, linear charm. Of course, there are other lovely towns, like Gavoi or Santulussurgiu, but Aggius remains my favourite. And the MAN – Nuoro’s Museum of Contemporary Art – Isn’t just a local or national treasure. It’s a key observatory for contemporary creativity in a place that often feels more remote than it actually is.

Any recommended reading on Sardinia?

What are you working on at the moment?

My new novel, L’immensa distrazione, will be released in September by Einaudi in their Supercoralli series… And no, it’s not set in Sardinia!

il pese più bello della Sardegna per la sua connotazione pittorica: severo, cubista, lineare. Certo ci sono tanti paesi belli in Sardegna, Gavoi per esempio, o Santulussurgiu, ma Aggius è in assoluto il mio preferito. Il MAN, il Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Nuoro, non ha solo una caratura locale o nazionale, è un osservatorio centrale in un luogo che si sente più decentrato di quanto lo sia nella realtà.

fter 26 years as the uncontested protagonist of exclusive night entertainment in Sardinia, Flavio Briatore draws an end to this experience. This historic decision has been followed by the sale of the Twiga brand and four iconic locations to Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, including the legendary Billionaire of Porto Cervo – the famous night club on the northeast coast. The purchase, carried out through a merger with Triple Sea Food, introduces a new concept into the luxury hospitality sector: the LMDV Hospitality Group which aims to redefine the concept of elite hospitality in a contemporary way. Below is my last interview with Flavio Briatore which I did here in Sardinia. It was very insightful and gives a good account of his authentic connection with this land. I had the pleasure of having him as my guest for Audaci a cuore aperto a few years earlier. He is an entrepreneur who needs no introduction, with no regrets and always willing to talk about business, success and his vision of life. As soon as I greet him, I realise that the Billionaire was not simply an entrepreneurial project, but his own affirmation of identity. A symbol of his way of understanding luxury: dynamic, engaging, and always evolving.

Today, after the purchase by the LMDV Hospitality Group, the project has entered a new stage.

Who is Flavio Briatore?

Just an ordinary man. I was born in a small mountain village near Cuneo where people’s highest ambitions were to become a ski instructor or manage a road maintenance depot. Instead, I chose to take the risk. I followed my ideas and my creativity, always doing what I wanted to do.

Obviously, your background carries some weight: the opportunities for a person born in New York are different than for a person from Cuneo, but I was always sure that one day I would leave the village and do something important.

Maybe everything has already been written when you are born, but you can still change a few pages.

What is your greatest achievement in your career as an entrepreneur?

As an entrepreneur, I was successful in different sectors:

sports, industry, communication, etc. In Formula One, I won seven world championships and I believe I am the only team manager to have won with two different teams.

What was your first experience in Gallura?

It was around the mid-1980s. As soon as you are here, you can see right away that this place is wonderful. Prince Karim had the money to develop the area and I did not, but I think we both felt the same awe.

Where did you get the idea for the Billionaire?

After a day on the beach, there was little to do in the evening. A place for those looking for quality nightlife. So I founded the Billionaire inside a villa I had bought.

Un imprenditore che non ha bisogno di presentazioni, senza rimpianti, pronto a parlare di affari, successo e della sua visione della vita, che avevo avuto il piacere di avere come ospite al mio format Audaci a cuore aperto già qualche anno prima. Quando lo saluto, capisco che il Billionaire non era solo un progetto imprenditoriale, ma una dichiarazione d’identità.

Un simbolo del suo modo di intendere il lusso: dinamico, coinvolgente, in continua trasformazione.

Oggi, con il passaggio a LMDV Hospitality Group, quel progetto entra in una nuova dimensione.

Chi è Flavio Briatore?

Una persona comune, nata in un piccolo paese di montagna vicino a Cuneo dove le massime aspirazioni erano fare il maestro di sci o gestire la casa cantoniera.

Ho però deciso di rischiare, ho seguito le mie idee, la mia creatività, facendo sempre quello che volevo fare. È chiaro che certi presupposti hanno un peso, sicuramente una persona nata a New York ha possibilità diverse rispetto a una nata a Cuneo, ma ho sempre pensato che sarei andato via da quel paesino e che avrei fatto qualcosa di importante.

Un libro chiamato ‘destino’ c’è, ma ne possiamo cambiare alcune pagine.

Le più grandi soddisfazioni della sua carriera da imprenditore?

Come imprenditore mi sono realizzato in diversi settori, quello sportivo, quello industriale, nella comunicazione...

In Formula 1 ho vinto sette mondiali e penso di essere l’unico team manager ad aver vinto con due team diversi.

Mi racconta il suo primo ‘incontro’ con la Gallura?

Era circa la metà degli anni ’80.

Quando arrivi qui, vedi subito che il posto è spettacolare. Il Principe Karim aveva i soldi per svilupparla, io no, ma credo che la sensazione di bellezza che provai fu identica alla sua.

Come nacque l’idea del Billionaire?

Dopo il mare e la spiaggia, c’era poco da fare la sera.

Un locale per chi desidera nightlife di qualità. Così nacque il Billionaire, all’interno di una villa che avevo acquistato.

you want a successful business, you need to treat your staff well.

What is your passion in your work?

I like to come up with ideas about how to develop new businesses. When you develop new businesses, you are creating jobs, and this is very important, especially for young people. Many people depend on you and so you have this great responsibility, but also great motivation.

Good results do not happen by chance or luck. If you get good results, it is because of good strategy, creativity and sacrifices.

Is there any project you did not do for fear of making a mistake?

No. If you do not want to make mistakes, you never do anything, but then you have already given up.

La differenza la fa lo staff: se vuoi un’azienda di successo, devi trattare bene chi ci lavora.

Cosa ama di più fare?

Pensare a come sviluppare nuovi business, perché quando sviluppi nuove imprese crei posti di lavoro, e questo è molto importante, specialmente per i giovani.

Ci sono molte persone che dipendono da noi, e questa è una grande responsabilità, ma anche una grande motivazione.

I risultati non arrivano per grazia o per fortuna, quando si ottengono risultati è perché ci sono dietro strategia, creatività e sacrifici.

La paura di sbagliare cosa le ha impedito di fare?

Niente. Il prezzo per non sbagliare è il non fare, ma a quel punto è finita.

e comes from Rotterdam and he’s the man behind the new art installation on the staircase of the Church of Santa Lucia, which opens the season in Gallura: with artistic direction by Giorgio Casu – curator of the 2021 and 2023

editions – Eelco has designed a large-scale fresco addressing current themes for the stairs overlooking the square.

What’s the inspiration for the project, and what message do you want to send to Sardinia and the world?

The main concept for my work in Arzachena is that we’re all connected, we’re all one with nature and we need to welcome change. I believe we should show interest in things we’re not used to, instead of saying I don’t like it because I don’t know it.

To convey all this I’ve made a painting that’s quite abstract; I didn’t want it to be too obvious.

Arriva da Rotterdam ed è l’autore del nuovo progetto dell’installazione artistica sulla Scalinata della chiesa di Santa Lucia, che apre la stagione in Gallura: Eelco, con la direzione artistica affidata a Giorgio Casu, già curatore delle edizioni 2021 e 2023, ha pensato per le scale sulla piazza un grande affresco che parla di temi attualissimi .

Cosa ha ispirato l’installazione e quale messaggio vuole dare alla Sardegna e al mondo intero?

Il concetto principale del mio lavoro di Arzachena è che siamo tutti connessi, siamo una cosa sola con la natura e che dobbiamo accogliere i cambiamenti. Credo che dovremmo dimostrare interesse verso le cose a cui non siamo abituati, invece di dire non mi piace perché non lo conosco. Per raccontare tutto questo fatto un dipinto un po’ astratto, non volevo dare un’immagine troppo

It’s a huge totem, and the further away you go, the more sense and coherence it gains.

Art’s power of connection is really interesting. And the colour combinations in my work also symbolise the combination of different cultures.

How did you create the installation?

The preparation of the 76 wooden planks was done at C’entro in San Gavino Monreale, in around a week.

I designed the first six planks and then developed the entire thing digitally: I was worried that too many details would make it hard to see the images from below and from a distance. The whole painting should be visible from the main square. I had to make sure there was consistency in details and form.

Where can we see other works of yours?

I’ve worked a lot in the United States in recent years; for some reason I’m more famous there than in the Netherlands.

I believe that since it’s outdoors, my art promotes itself through the people who see it. And as far as I’m concerned it’s a lot of travelling: I go wherever I’m wanted.

Can you sum up what you like about Sardinia?

The local people try and communicate with me even though I don’t speak the language; they’re all really friendly, kind and welcoming.

It’s fantastic here.

ovvia. C’è una volpe ma anche una figura umana, un gatto…È un grande totem che più ci allontaniamo, più acquista senso e uniformità. Il potere di connessione dell’arte è molto interessante. E la combinazione di colori nel mio lavoro è simbolica anche della combinazione di culture differenti.

Come ha creato la sua opera?

I lavori di preparazione delle 76 tavole in legno li ho eseguiti al C’Entro di San Gavino Monreale, in una settimana circa. Ho disegnato le prime sei tavole e poi ho sviluppato l’opera completa in digitale: avevo paura che troppi dettagli avrebbero reso difficile vedere le immagini dal basso e da lontano. Dalla piazza principale si deve vedere l’intero dipinto. Dovevo essere sicuro che ci fosse coerenza nei dettagli e nella forma.

Dove possiamo vedere gli altri suoi lavori?

Ho lavorato molto negli Stati Uniti negli ultimi anni, e per qualche ragione sono più famoso lì che in Olanda. Credo che il mio lavoro, essendo esposto all’aperto, si promuova da solo attraverso la gente che lo vede. Da parte mia posso dire che molto viaggiare, vado ovunque mi cercano.

Cosa le piace della Sardegna in una parola?

La gente del posto cerca di comunicare con me anche se non parlo la lingua, tutti sono molto amichevoli, accoglienti e ospitali. È fantastico essere qui.

n the heart of Gallura immersed in the scent of the Mediterranean macchia and the intense blue of the sea, there is an institution that has made a vital contribution to the development of Sardinia: the Istituto Professionale per i Servizi Alberghieri e della Ristorazione Costa Smeralda of Arzachena.

Established in 1965 by Prince Karim Aga Khan, the Ipsar is not just a school but a place where students can enhance their professionalism and vision.

We met with Antonello Pannella, the school’s director, to tell us about the story of this school which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, its evolution and the challenges faced in training the future players of the tourism industry.

The Ipsar was an idea of Prince Karim Aga Khan.

Can you tell us how this project came to be and what connection it had – and

continues to have – with Gallura?

The Costa Smeralda® project was not only a real estate development project, like people would often think. The Aga Khan had ideas for an Integrated Development Plan where tourism would have triggered the growth of all the other economic sectors of this territory. To turn his vision into a reality, it was necessary to train skilled professionals. A real culture of hospitality did not exist at that time in Gallura: mostly because there were no facilities for tourists. It was still a poor area where people mainly lived on agriculture and farming. The Prince immediately realised that a catering and hospitality school would be essential. The school was inaugurated in 1965 with the support of the Municipality of Arzachena and the Sardinia Region.

Il progetto Costa Smeralda® non fu soltanto un progetto di sviluppo immobiliare, come spesso si tende a semplificare.

L’Aga Khan immaginò un Piano di sviluppo integrato, in cui il turismo avrebbe innescato la crescita di tutti gli altri settori economici del territorio. Per rendere concreta questa visione, era necessario formare figure professionali competenti.

In quel periodo, in Gallura, non esisteva una vera cultura dell’ospitalità: semplicemente, mancavano le strutture turistiche. Era una terra ancora povera, in cui si viveva principalmente di agricoltura e pastorizia. Il Principe comprese fin da subito che una scuola alberghiera sarebbe stata fondamentale.

Con il sostegno del Comune di Arzachena e della Regione Sardegna, l’Istituto fu inaugurato nel 1965.

and hospitality training. What has changed compared to the beginning? And is the original vision still valid?

Today, we are the professional school with the highest job placement rate in Sardinia.

This has been confirmed with the data of the Eduscopio research carried out by the Agnelli Foundation.

This is our most concrete connection with the territory: we train young people to make them ready for the world of work, and we do it with a plan that goes beyond Gallura and extends to the whole of the island. Our boarding school welcomes students from all parts of Sardinia and many of our former students today hold roles of great responsibility: hotel directors, managers for important tourism companies or internationally renowned chefs. The level of training and the students aspirations have grown considerably.

What are the challenges and opportunities today for a school such as your one, considering that the tourism industry is constantly evolving?

The world we live in changes rapidly, and tourism is one of the most dynamic sectors.

For this reason, the Ipsar is a school open to the whole world: our students participate in mobility and international cooperation projects.

At the same time, we welcome students of all different nationalities. We were able to innovate, always updating the curriculum. For example, starting from next year, we will have a new Liceo Linguistico. This project is an answer to the increasing need for an international idea of hospitality, attentive to different languages and cultures.

I believe this was the dream of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan: a land capable of combining excellence, openness and vision.

Oggi l’Istituto è un punto di riferimento nella formazione alberghiera. Cosa è cambiato rispetto agli inizi? E in che modo si porta avanti la visione originaria?

Oggi siamo l’istituto professionale con il più alto tasso di inserimento lavorativo in Sardegna. Lo confermano da anni le indagini Eduscopio della Fondazione Agnelli.

Questo è il nostro legame più concreto con il territorio: formiamo giovani pronti per il mondo del lavoro, e lo facciamo con uno sguardo che va oltre la Gallura, abbracciando tutta l’isola.

Il nostro convitto accoglie studenti da ogni parte della Sardegna e molti dei nostri ex alunni oggi ricoprono ruoli di grande responsabilità: direttori di hotel, dirigenti di importanti realtà turistiche, chef di fama internazionale.

Il livello della formazione e delle aspirazioni è cresciuto enormemente.

Quali sono le principali sfide e opportunità oggi per una scuola come la vostra, in un contesto turistico in continua evoluzione?

Viviamo in un mondo che cambia rapidamente, e il turismo è uno dei settori più dinamici. Per questo l’Ipsar è una scuola che guarda al mondo: i nostri studenti partecipano a progetti di mobilità e cooperazione internazionale, e allo stesso tempo accogliamo giovani di diverse nazionalità.

Abbiamo saputo rinnovarci, aggiornando costantemente l’offerta formativa. Dal prossimo anno scolastico, per esempio, attiveremo un nuovo liceo linguistico. Una scelta che riflette la necessità di un’ospitalità sempre più internazionale, attenta alle lingue e alle culture. Credo che Sua Altezza il Principe Aga Khan avesse immaginato proprio questo: un territorio capace di coniugare eccellenza, apertura e visione.

A blue Canyon

THE CAPRERA CANYON: AN AREA INHABITED BY SEVEN SPECIES OF CETACEANS OUT OF THE EIGHT FOUND IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN BASIN

hirty nautical miles from the lighthouse of Capo Ferro in Porto Cervo, off the north-eastern coast of Sardinia in the La Maddalena archipelago, there is one of the most fascinating underwater sites in the Mediterranean: the Caprera Canyon. With altitudes ranging from two hundred metres of the canyon to about 1500 metres of the plain of Olbia with escarpments, valleys, mountain ranges and very steep walls, the underwater Caprera Canyon is home to as many as seven different species of cetaceans out of the eight found in the Mediterranean basin: sperm whales, fin whales, dolphins, striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, goose-beaked whales and Risso dolphins. All these beautiful aquatic animals inhabit the depths of the canyon. And it is here in the crystal clear waters overlooking the Costa Smeralda that they choose to reproduce and raise their calves.

Bordering the Pelagos Sanctuary, the canyon is a stretch of sea included in the migratory routes of these large marine mammals.

But these impressive and fascinating cetaceans are not the only animals found here. In this area, researchers and biologists have also spotted turtles, sunfish, some species of shark, and even the monk seal. Because of its shape and characteristics, it is considered a very important site for biodiversity.

Marine currents facilitate the ascent of cold water flows from the depths, very rich in oxygen and nutrients. These specific currents replace the old water depleted of resources and create the ideal conditions to attract biodiversity, including many species of cetaceans. In March last year, the Caprera canyon was included in the global network of Hope Spots overseen by the worldwide Mission Blue organisation for the protection of marine biodiversity, established by the famous oceanographer Sylvia Earle. The announcement came from One Ocean Foundation, a non-profit organisation active at international level in the

field of ocean conservation.

This result was made possible also thanks to the innovative interdisciplinary and non-invasive approach carried out by the non-profit organisation, which includes visual investigation, acoustic monitoring and analysis of environmental DNA. Thanks to these tests, biologists were able to confirm for the first time the return of the monk seal in this area. Consequently, the canyon became part of the more than one hundred and forty Hope Spots in the world, the second in Italy. Since 2019, One Ocean Foundation has been involved in carrying out scientific research projects in the area with the support of research funds and universities with the aim to collect scientific data on cetaceans and the dangers of pollution. This constant monitoring activity is making it possible to raise the level of protection of marine biodiversity in the canyon and will contribute to the conservation of key marine species in the Mediterranean.

Porto Cervo

A trenta miglia nautiche dal faro di Capo Ferro a Porto Cervo, a largo della costa nord orientale dalla Sardegna, nell’arcipelago di La Maddalena, si trova uno dei luoghi sottomarini più affascinanti del Mediterraneo, il Canyon di Caprera. Con profondità che variano dai duecento metri del Canyon ai circa 1500 metri della Piana di Olbia con scarpate, valli, catene montuose e pareti molto ripide, il Canyon sottomarino di Caprera è la ‘casa’ di ben sette specie di cetacei, su otto presenti nel bacino del Mediterraneo.

Qui nuotano il capodoglio, la balenottera comune e il delfino, la stenella striata e il tursiope, fino allo zinio e al grampo: tutti questi affascinanti animali acquatici popolano le profondità del Canyon. Ed è proprio qui, nelle acque cristalline che si affacciano sulla Costa Smeralda, che scelgono di riprodursi e di allevare soprattutto i nuovi nati.

Situato ai confini del Santuario Pelago, il Canyon è un tratto

di mare che rientra nelle rotte di migrazioni di questi grandi mammiferi marini. Ma non si trovano solo questi imponenti quanto affascinanti cetacei. In questa zona, infatti, gli studiosi e i biologi hanno avvistato delle tartarughe, i pesci luna, alcune specie di squalo, fino ad arrivare alla foca monaca. Per la sua struttura e le sue caratteristiche, è considerato un hotpost per la biodiversità. Le correnti marine favoriscono la risalita dalle profondità di flussi di acqua fredda, particolarmente ricca di ossigeno e di nutrienti.

Sono proprio queste particolari correnti che vanno a sostituire l’acqua impoverita, e creano le condizioni ideali per attirare una grandissima biodiversità, tra cui moltissime specie di cetacei.

Nel marzo dello scorso anno il Canyon di Caprera è entrato della rete globale di Hope Spots dell’iniziativa mondiale Mission Blue per la tutela della biodiversità Marina, istituita dalla famosa oceanografa Sylvia Earle.

Ad annunciarlo è stato la One Ocean Foundation, realtà no-profit che opera a livello internazionale proprio nell’ambito della tutela del mare.

Un risultato possibile anche grazie all’ approccio innovativo interdisciplinare e non invasivo portato avanti dalla no profit, che comprende indagini visive, monitoraggio acustico e analisi del DNA ambientale. Grazie proprio a questa analisi i biologi sono riusciti ad identificare per la prima volta il ritorno della Foca Monaca nell’area. Il Canyon si è unito così agli oltre centoquaranta Hope Spots nel mondo, diventando il secondo nel resto d’Italia. È dal 2019 che One Ocean Foundation è impegnata nel progetto di ricerca scientifica sulla zona grazie al supporto di enti di ricerca e università per raccogliere dati scientifici sui cetacei e sui pericoli dell’ inquinamento. Un lavoro costante di monitoraggio che sta rendendo possibile implementare il livello di protezione delle biodiversità marine nel Canyon e contribuirà alla conservazione delle specie chiave nel Mediterraneo.

Over the years, Rally Costa Smeralda has become one of the landmark events on the international rally scene.

It’s an asset for the whole of Sardinia, and it has led to entire generations passionate about the world of rallies and motorsport in general. 65 teams competed in the classic rally, including 15 in the Trofeo A112 Abarth, two in classic rally cars, plus 24 others in the Regularity Rally; and, last but not least, 23 more in the non-competitive Martini Vintage Rally: these are the numbers participating in the eighth edition of the Costa Smeralda International Classic Car Rally. An innovation for the 2025 edition was the new race format, with an extended total route covering a total of 142.3 timed kilometres divided into two sections with twelve special stages, six on each day.

Novità di questa edizione 2025 è stata il nuovo format della gara che ha previsto il percorso allungato, per un totale di 142,30 chilometri cronometrati suddivisi in due tappe articolate in ben dodici prove speciali, sei per ogni giornata, di cui quelle della prima tappa Aratena, Monti e Alà dei

This motorsport event has triple validity: for the Italian Championships in Classic Rally, Regularity with Media 50 and 60, and Classic Cars, and it is paired with the unmissable noncompetitive Martini Vintage Rally, limited to cars in Martini livery. On the 140-plus kilometres of the course, top teams in the Tricolore Classic Car Rally competed in the second of eight rounds; alongside them were the new cohort in the Classic category for cars built between 1993 and 2000. The Media 60 category was won by the Verdoni brothers in a Peugeot 309 GTI, while the 50 was won by Mariano Fiorese and Laura Marcattilj in a Porsche 911. For three days, Porto Cervo took a trip into the history of rally driving – including the Gallura Special Stages – in this year’s gathering of legendary drivers and iconic vehicles.

L’evento sportivo ha una tripla validità: per i Campionati Italiani Rally Storico, Regolarità a Media 50 e 60 e Auto Classiche, ed è abbinato all’ormai immancabile raduno non competitivo Martini Rally Vintage, riservato alle vetture in livrea Martini.

Sugli oltre 140 chilometri di percorso gli equipaggi protagonisti del Tricolore Rally Auto Storiche si sono sfidati per il secondo degli otto round, ai quali si sono affiancate le nuove leve della categoria Auto classiche dedicata alle vetture del periodo 1993- 2000. Nella categoria media 60 si sono imposti i fratelli Verdona su Peugeot 309 GTI, mentre nella ‘50’ ha svettato la Porsche 911 di Fiorese e Marcattilj. Per tre giornate Porto Cervo ha fatto un tuffo nel passato dei rally, anche attraverso le Prove Speciali di Gallura, dove leggende del volante e auto iconiche si sono date appuntamento.

erfectly braided little bundles, fried golden and shining with their coating of warm honey. The intoxicating scent of honey, combined with the aroma of lemon and orange zest, make the fried dough treats known as acciuleddi – from ‘acciola’, which literally means ‘skein’ in the Gallura dialect – one of the most popular and beloved of Sardinian sweets. A large number of versions can be found all over the island, but the original recipe comes from coastal villages in the north east, in Gallura, where acciuleddi are never absent from festive tables, especially during Carnival season and throughout spring. A few simple ingredients combine with the skill of the cook to make this simple treat, eaten rigorously with the hands and followed by licking of the fingers which, if the acciuleddi are made properly, will be dripping with melted honey. The traditional Gallura recipe includes eggs, but in many places these braids of fried dough were originally made with ‘violated’ dough, i.e. containing lard, left over from other recipes, such as seadas (fried cheese and honey pastries) or panadas (savoury pasties). Nothing was thrown away, especially dough, which was turned into these little bundles, like two-stranded plaits, and fried in boiling oil before being doused in honey and decorated with coloured sprinkles to delight the children.

They are are known by a range of names on the island – azzuleddhi, mengadagas or trizzas – but all share the same appeal: undeniable deliciousness.

While seadas, the cousins of acchiuleddi, are not to everyone’s taste due to the cheese they contain, it’s extremely unusual that these little fried braids are rejected.

And once you start eating them, one leads to another.

Perfetti intrecci che formano piccole matasse allungate, leggermente dorati e resi brillanti dalla colata di miele caldo che li ricopre. Il profumo inebriante del gustoso nettare a cui si unisce l’aroma della scorza di limone e arancia, rende le matasse di impasto fritto chiamate ‘Acciuleddi’ da ‘acciola’ che letteralmente significa matassa nel dialetto gallurese, uno dei dolci prodotti in Sardegna più apprezzati ed amati. In tutta l’Isola se ne trovano diverse varianti, ma la ricetta originale nasce nei paesi della costa a nord est, in Gallura, dove gli acciuleddi non possono mai mancare sulle tavole di festa, soprattutto durante il periodo del carnevale. Pochi, semplici e genuini ingredienti che uniti alla maestria di chi li impasta, danno origine a questo dolce da mangiare rigorosamente con le mani e a cui far seguire, immancabilmente, una leccata di

dita. La ricetta gallurese doc vede tra gli ingredienti anche l’uovo, ma in tanti paesi queste treccine di pasta fritta venivano preparate con pasta ‘violata’, ossia amalgamata con lo strutto, che avanzava da altre preparazioni, come quella delle Seadas o delle Panadas. Non si buttava via nulla, tanto meno l’impasto che veniva così trasformato in piccole matasse, quasi delle treccine e tuffato nell’olio bollente, per poi essere ricoperto di miele a cui si aggiunge una spolverata di codette colorate.

Diversi i nomi con cui sono conosciuti nell’Isola, azzuleddhi, mengadagas e trizzas, tutti con un unico comune denominatore: l’indiscussa bontà e golosità.

Se la Seadas, ‘cugina’ degli Acchiuleddi, può non esaudire i gusti di tutti i palati, a causa del formaggio al suo interno, è invece raro che una volta assaggiate queste treccine non piacciano.
