President Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met in Mexico City to strengthen bilateral relations; its importance lies in how both countries will face Trump and the upcoming 2026 USMCA review. While the talks covered cooperation in investment, security, and sustainability, the main challenge will be to preserve the trade pact that ties both countries to the US. Sheinbaum and Carney stressed that North America’s competitiveness depends on strengthening, not weakening, the USMCA, even amid tariff threats Both emphasized that the treaty will continue, but acknowledged political uncertainty ahead Rather than seeking separation from the US, they highlighted the need for a united front to manage regional stability

Mexico’s Ministry of Economy and the US Trade Representative (USTR) have launched public consultations as part of preparations for the 2026 review of the USMCA The consultations aim to evaluate the treaty’s performance since it entered into force in 2020 and to gather proposals for possible adjustments In Mexico, the consultation was formalized on September 17th with publication in the Official Federal Gazette, giving stakeholders until November 17th, 2025, to submit input digitally or in person. Meanwhile, USTR will collect written comments and hold a public hearing. Although both countries emphasize private sector participation, uncertainty remains over how stakeholder contributions will be processed and whether they will directly shape the governments’ negotiation positions In Mexico, it is unclear how public consultations will connect with separate processes involving industry representatives.

The public hearings for Mexico’s Electoral Reform began with exclusive participation from Morena supporters and aligned academics, raising concerns about the absence of opposition voices Proposals included electronic voting, the elimination of local electoral courts, and cutting state electoral institutes to reduce bureaucracy and costs. While framed as efficiency measures, critics warn these changes could weaken institutional checks on elections. By limiting plural debate and concentrating reforms within Morena’s agenda, the process risks reducing transparency, political representation, and the strength of Mexico’s democratic process.

After Trump managed to remove FED Governor Lisa Cook, via Supreme Court faculties, the Federal Reserve cut its interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 4% to 4 25%, marking its first reduction since December of 2024 The move comes amid strong signs of a slowing labor market, including slower job creation and unemployment rising up to 4.3%, the highest in nearly four years. While the Fed emphasized caution due to persistent inflation pressures, especially from President Trump’s tariffs, it projected two additional cuts in 2025 and further reductions through 2027. The decision could highlight both political pressure from President Trump, who repeatedly demanded a looser monetary policy, and economic concerns over weakening employment The rate cut is expected to lower borrowing costs and support growth but risks fueling inflation if tariffs continue to push consumer prices upward

Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua) has launched a review of over 560,000 active water concessions. Irregularities include agricultural permits to real estate, industrial use hidden under municipal titles, and expired concessions left unrenewed. The review seeks to restore rule of law in water management For the US–Mexico relationship, effective water governance is vital, as shared rivers and cross-border supply issues remain a key issue in their relationship.

The designation of Mexican Deputy Hilda Brown Figueredo by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel’s La Mayiza faction highlights how Mexican political figures may be implicated in cartel operations. According to US authorities, Brown used her position as mayor of Rosarito to enable cartel operatives to infiltrate local government and protect illicit activities In response, Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit froze her accounts, signaling that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration is willing to take action against corruption linked to organized crime. This move not only helps address US concerns over border security but also strengthens Mexico’s credibility in USMCA negotiations, showing compliance with Trump’s demands and aligning bilateral priorities on security and trade
