PRESENTATION

The Conference will focus on reporting the results of the "African teachers and teachers of African descent in COLOMBIA, BRAZIL, GUATEMALA, VENEZUELA, GABON, EQUATORIAL GUINEA and JAMAICA. 20th and 21st century" research project, proposed by the "Historia y Prospectiva de la Universidad Latinoamericana” Research Group, HISULA, at the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia; the RUECA Research group (U. of Cartagena, Colombia); the "Profesión Docente" (U. of Ouro Preto, Brazil); HUM 209 Research Group " Integration of Culture, history, development and human rights in Latin America" (University Pablo Olavide - Spain); " Education and media" Research group from the Technological University of Chocó; "Vulnerable Territories, Sustainable Human Development" group at the University of Cartagena; Education History and Development group, University of Nariño; HEDURE group, University of the Andes, Venezuela and the "Teacher training" Group from USAC in Guatemala, which have signed the protocol of activities with the commitment to undertake life stories.

The research delves into the history and outlook on teaching, through life stories of African and afro-descendant teachers from Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Gabon, Venezuela and Equatorial Guinea in the twentieth and twenty-first century with emphasis on comparative studies. The purpose of the research is to highlight and make visible the performance of these teachers in the social, educational, political context, and in the community where they taught or have been teaching while impacting their local and regional surroundings.

Additionally, this work seeks to determine to what extent cultural traditions are maintained in their educational practices, which is fundamental for the study of the task of the teacher in each of the places of study.

The question which the Conference "The life story of African and afro-descendant teachers" seeks to address is: Is the life story of Afro-descendant teachers linked to their ethnic mental structures, in the development of their educational practice and the social, cultural, educational and political impact on change in mind-sets with regard to values of tolerance in Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela and Equatorial Guinea in the 20th and 21st centuries?

II. OBJECTIVE To socialize research and educational experiences which have emerged from the planning and execution of the "African teachers and teachers of African descent in Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Jamaica. 20th and 21st Century" project in order to establish the balance of project development and organize visibility strategies and impact of their results.

III. ORGANIZATION The central organization of the event will include the participation of Prof. Anette Insanally from the University of the West Indies, Prof. Marta Corbett-Baugh, from the Ministry of Education of Jamaica, Dr. George Dawkins. Director of Research, Shortwood Teachers' College, and Dra. Diana Elvira Soto Arango, Coordinator of the research project.

Additionally, a maximum of 3 researchers from each research group linked to the project will be involved.

The event will be held on May 4 to 7, 2015 in Kingston, Jamaica.

IV. METHODOLOGY The I Conference will be held with the modality of thematic roundtables, which will open with a central panel that will have opposing speakers and presenters from different countries and then papers on this topic will be presented. It is expected that all participate will be in one Conference and it will not be divided. Each Panel will be followed by a halfhour question and answer session.

The duration of each presentation should be no more than 20 minutes. Each session will comprise six (6) papers and a half-hour question and answer session.

V. GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS Presenters who wish to participate must submit a 150-word abstract and complete the registration form. Papers may be presented in Spanish, Portuguese and English.

The following must be included in the abstract:  Title of paper  Name of speaker(s) with e-mail  Institution and country The Paper should be a maximum of 20 pages in WORD format, Times New Roman 12.

NB: iconography and literature must be included. Citations should be based on those used in the Journal of Latin American Education History. RHELA (Chicago Format).

Deadline for submission of documents: Deadline for submission of abstracts of presentations is February 28, 2015.

Registration fee (Determined by the organizers in Jamaica).

Project members who have signed the protocol will not be charged a registration fee
