Homework, parent conferences, fundraisers, OH MY! Fall is a busy time for most families and a time of many transitions in my household. Sometimes I feel like we unintentionally forget to appreciate the things we are working so hard for: our families, a roof over our heads, our good health, our education, and even the simplicity of having food on our plates. As winter approaches and the holidays near, I like take a “time out” to regroup and remember the reason for the season.

The holidays, for me, are a time to reflect on the good things in my life and express my gratitude in a meaningful way. I have been given the opportunity to expand my responsibilities and involvement with Growing Up Chico Magazine, and for that I am truly grateful. Not only do I work among an amazing staff that is creative and hardworking, but I work for an owner who is known for her integrity. She challenges my abilities every day and her dedication lies in supporting Butte County families through education and information.

DeAnna Holman DeAnna is a teacher and mother of three who is working as a freelance writer, editor, and graphic artist (She also owns Restoration Bee, a booth at Eight and Main). She currently does the layouts and assists in editing Growing Up Chico! She obtained her BS from USC and her teaching credential from CSUC, Chico. DeAnna is a breast cancer survivor and will be writing about her experiences. She lives on an almond orchard in Durham with her husband, kids, dog and cats.

Terry J. Basile, LMFT Terry is a Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in Chico. She works with adults, teens, couples and families. Theresa is a Community Club & Livestock Leader for Chico 4-H Club, FCC Harvest Festival Chair, California Women for Agriculture member, and is on the CORE Butte Charter and Chico FFA Advisory committees. Sandra Buckman Sandra is the Junior Marketing Student Assistant at Chico Performances. Majoring in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations at CSU Chico, Sandra is a rare and endangered species often referred to as a native Chicoan.

Local Author Making A Difference

C

hico Author, Stacy Piper, has been making a real difference to children in Chico, and the surrounding communities, with her children’s book, Sugar Bugz: They Live On Your Teeth.

The creation of the Sugar Bugz book was done by Chico people! With inspiration from her Chico born kids, Stacy wrote the book. Stacy and her husband, Sam Piper, created the storyboards and then Sam did the layout and design.

Local Artist, Lori Escobar, did the amazing and creative art for the book. Several local teachers helped edit the text and local Dentist, Dr. Roos, wrote the forward of the book.

Stacy and her husband spent their savings to publish this special book. Stacy launched the book’s website, Facebook page, Twitter page, Pinterest account, and blog. She has made the book available on Amazon in print and e-Book format. Stacy is proud that many local businesses, like Made In Chico, Postal Plus, Hubbs Stationary and Chico Pediatric Dentistry want to sell her book.

Stacy has read her book to hundreds of children throughout northern California and she has worked with many local organizations like First 5 Butte County, in effort to help them with their oral health initiatives. The book is now being used for many outreach programs in Butte County, as well as in other counties.

What does the future hold? The 2nd edition of the Sugar Bugz: They Live On Your Teeth book will have Spanish,

as well as English, on each page! Stacy has also written adorable Halloween and Christmas Sugar Bugz books. She is currently seeking sponsorship in attempts to fund the Spanish edition, as well as the Halloween and Christmas sequels.

In closing, Stacy wants to make sure Chico knows that every year, in February, kids can get FREE dental health care on Give Kids A Smile day! For these free services, you must sign up EARLY, starting in October.

Places like Northern Valley Indian Health and Chico Pediatric Dentistry have generously offered dental care on Give Kids A Smile day in the past and Stacy has volunteered at Chico Pediatric Dentistry by reading her Sugar Bugz, They Live On Your Teeth book while the kids wait in the lobby. Stacy continues to be AMAZED at how many local dental professionals volunteer their day to our community each year.

February is Stacy’s busiest month as she runs around to schools and organizations, helping to promote children’s dental hygiene.

In working with many entities in Chico, Stacy has come to realize that our special town is filled with awesome educators, businesses and organizations!

elebrating 35 seasons, Chico Community Ballet embarks on the creation of a brandnew and unique concept with their bi-annual Nutcracker production at Laxson Auditorium: “A Very Chico Nutcracker.”

Inspired by Dr. Oscar Stansbury and his daughter, Angeline, this soaring story captures the awe and expectation of the night before Christmas when a mysterious gift sparks a wondrous adventure. As the colossal Christmas tree shoots skyward and almond blossoms blanket the stage, the ballet magically takes Angeline and the audience on a journey she never expected. From an enchanted land brimming with visitors from faraway lands, waltzing almond blossoms, to a handsome prince—A Very Chico Nutcracker is the perfect holiday adventure.

his December at Laxson Auditorium, join Chico Community Ballet as they breathe life and excitement into The Nutcracker by giving this classic Christmas ballet a very “Chico” flare. Set in turn-of-the-century Chico, to Tchaikovsky’s magical score, this holiday staple illustrates Chico’s rich history through gorgeous new sets, beautiful costumes, amazing dancers, and iconic Chico images. A Very Chico Nutcracker is a holiday extravaganza the whole family can enjoy!

he mastermind behind this unique concept, is artistic director and main choreographer, Debbie Jorritsma. Jorritsma is a veteran director of The Nutcracker, and is well known for her ‘tutorage’ of young, local ballet students during her 30 years of teaching in the North State. “The concept of a ‘Chico’ Nutcracker all started when I went on a tour of the Stansbury

Titus began dancing for the Chico Community Ballet company when she was eight years old, and has been invited back as a guest performer for this year’s production. “It’s such an honor to be dancing with this wonderful group of performers,” says Titus, “I love ballet and the Chico community, and I am just really excited for everything that’s in store.”

The Stansbury Association seemed very warm and open to the idea. I was kind of clueless as to how I was going to make this happen, but the puzzle pieces started to fit.”

Just like his co-star, Bevens has been dancing for the Chico Community Ballet Company since he was in elementary school. Now dancing professionally in Los Angeles, Bevens has been hired as a guest performer in his fourth time performing the role of the Nutcracker. “I’m so excited that they’re putting a Chico flare on The Nutcracker,” says Bevens, “I’m honored to be a part of something so unique to Chico, and I love that I get to give

ith a new concept, and 35 seasons of wear and tear, the original Nutcracker sets are getting put to rest. “The sets are getting completely redone,” says Jorritsma, “Steve Ellis, our technical director, basically said ‘it’s time,’ so that marked the beginning of our plan. From January on, the whole idea started falling into place, and we’ve been working really hard since then.”

Bob Pickering is our set designer, which is pretty comical because Bob was our first Nutcracker set designer way back in 1995 and 96. Set wise, I just gave Bob lots of ideas and images, and somehow, he was able to take it and pull it all together,” says Jorritsma.

The 12th Annual Farm City Celebration Harvest Festival

ome celebrate agriculture at the FREE, 12th Annual Farm City Celebration Harvest Festival.

The event will be held Saturday, November 8th, from 10-2pm, at the Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park.

We are bringing the farm to the city with a 4-H interactive animal display, cattle roping, stock dog demonstrations, modern and vintage farm equipment, tractors, and much more. Kids of all ages will enjoy Boy Scouts Troop 2 building two rope bridge obstacle courses, a must experience event!

The Bidwell Mansion will be open for first level tours, arts & crafts, and a free bounce house for the kids. We are lucky to have Madison Bear Garden barbeque lunch for a special event price.

Community Baby Shower

B

utte Baby Steps, a program of Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, in collaboration with Butte County’s Children and Families Commission (First Five) and Public Health, will be hosting a FREE community baby shower for all pregnant and new mothers in Butte County. The event will be held at the Dorothy Johnson Center at 755 E. 16th Street, in Chico from 1-3 pm on November 12th.

H

ighlights of the Baby Shower include showcasing over 20 community providers, offering resources and information for having a healthy pregnancy and raising healthy children. The “First 5 Express” will also be in attendance, offering a multitude of activities designed to stimulate early brain development and offer parents new ideas to inspire early learning and positive behaviors at home. Other highlights include a cooking demonstration on how to make homemade baby food by CSU Chico’s SNAP ED program and a complementary photo shoot designed to capture your growing baby bump or newborn’s first smile.

other’s Strong will be offering breakout sessions, where they will discuss the myths of motherhood and strategies for moms connecting with other moms. There will be additional prizes for moms that attend the breakout sessions! There will also be snacks and refreshments, as well as numerous free giveaways.

Every generation of parents has new challenges to manage due to some new behavior that has become popular in our culture, effecting our children’s emotional or physical development. Grandparents will remember struggling over the first Parental Advisory stickers on their children’s music because of profanities in a song. Little did we know, once that barrier was broken, there would be a flood of changes in the world of media.

Parents have been struggling for the last decade with managing the effects of the digital world on our children and families. Much has been written of the negative effects of letting your child compulsively play computer games. Many parents are feeling left out by their pre-teen and older children who only communicate with another human being through texts. It is quite the challenge!

To counter some of the negative effects of our electronic age, I would encourage parents to be proactive and focus on how to use our digital devices to enrich our children’s lives.

Create a family night and watch documentaries with your children. Let each family member take a turn picking out the show they want to share. Now that we have so many ways to watch any video and at any time, this enables us to be in charge of what we watch as a family. I love how often animal shows bring in information about climate change, and land development that effect the habitat and the behavior of the animal. Developing rainforests may not only change weather patterns, they force the animal to hunt for food from the livestock of angry local farmers or in the garbage of townspeople. Ask your child how they would solve these problems. Research online to find possible alternative solutions. Use this as a moment to teach your children that there is a cause and effect to all behavior. This concept is vital to their developing the ability to monitor their own actions now and in the future.

Since our children are connected to minute by minute information about the lives of movie stars, media personalities and sports figures, use that information to ask some thoughtful questions about the motivation behind certain behaviors.

For example, “What do you think would cause a player to refuse to stand up for our national anthem?”

Challenge their thought processes gently. Bring it down to their own level by asking what they would do if they thought someone in their family was being mistreated by a group of people. Talk about how in our history, passive resistance has been used instead of violence to bring about change, so you are teaching history while responding to a current event. While the major media outlets will always have an opinion and perhaps an agenda to sensationalize on events, it is key that we teach our children how to think for themselves and dissect the news so they can develop their own opinions.

Along with all the junk our children are exposed to online, there are also many good programs and outlets to information available. Encourage your child to add some links like: pbs.org, timeforkids. com, or kids.nationalgeographic.com. Follow them yourself so you can talk to your kids about what they are learning. Dr. Jane Goodall has a program called, “Roots and Shoots” that can be followed online and joined across the country that teaches children how to practically help our environment. We want our children to have the knowledge to support them being active citizens of the world they will inherit.

The internet can open up a child’s world in a way nothing has before. Sit down and explore the world with them through maps. Determine a country or culture they would like to know more about. Maybe it is where a relative, classmate, or neighbor came from.

Find out if there is anyone available to write or email your child so they have a more personal experience of another country. You can also explore pen pal sites for kids, online.

What about YouTube? It has so many informational videos that you could build just about anything with your child. So, find a craft or project together and build it. This is a great way to have quality time and make a special memory. Then, take a picture and brag about it online.

I love how texting is a great way to keep track of older children. Yet, it is also a great way to offer support and appreciation. Just send random little ‘love notes’ throughout the week like, “Thanks for a great job on your room,” or “You have a great smile.”

You can also just send a fun emoji to brighten their day. Reminding a child that you are always thinking of them is a powerful way to stay connected.

12 Days of Secret Santa Fun Ways to Teach Your Kids About Giving

My mom always told me to, “keep my alms in secret.” To be honest, I never had a clue what that meant, but I figured it out, watching my mom and grandmother around Christmas time.

I remember going into my Grandmother’s basement and seeing an entire chocolate factory. She spent hours making the most decadent treats. She worked full-time as an elementary school teacher, and though she did not have much time or money, she put everything she had into making those chocolate treats.

I was so excited. I dreamed of eating chocolate treats for every meal.

That’s when I got the bad news: We were giving away all the treats. All that chocolate, and bread, and all of those cinnamon rolls were going to other people; some of whom we did not even know. I had a lot to learn about service.

Luckily, my mom taught me that giving away Christmas goodies can be just as fun as eating them.

Every year, my mom planned a “Twelve Days of Christmas Service Project.” Two weeks before Christmas, she would pick a family for which we wanted to make treats. Then, every night, for twelve nights, we would secretly deliver the treats to their door and then run away before we were caught.

Secretly getting the treats to the door was always a fun challenge, especially when we were little.

Sometimes we were not fast enough to make it back to Mom’s car and we would have to walk home. Other times we would blow our cover by accidentally leaving a hat or some mittens with our name on them by the door. Other times, we were so slow getting away from the front porch, that we would have to dive into the front yard bushes just to avoid getting caught. As the years passed, our Christmas giving ninja skills got more and more refined and the unsuspecting recipients had no chance of ever knowing who had left the surprise holiday treats.

The best thing about the Twelve Days of Christmas Program is we learned to give and we had fun doing it. Not only did we have a chance to channel our mischievous natures toward giving a little holiday cheer, we also learned how good it felt to give.

Today, I am teaching the same lesson to my kids.

Not only do they get to learn about giving, it gives me an excuse to make a lot of holiday goodies.

MOD Pizza

Time Out For Moms

Time Out For Moms meets every Friday Morning from 9:00am - 11:00am, childcare provided. This program is designed for mothers of babies, toddlers and young children in order to provide connection, support and encouragement for moms. We use a set curriculum, such as “MOPS,” and enjoy guest speakers, breakfast, and fellowship together during our weekly meetings.

November Letters to Santa Until December 4th

During December, boys and girls under 8 years old can receive a letter via CARD from jolly old Santa and his elves. Children should mail their letter to the CARD office, 545 Vallombrosa Avenue, Chico, CA 95926, no later than December 4. A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed. The return envelope will be postmarked from the North Pole. Unfortunately, due to the amount of letters received, any letters collected after December 4 will not receive a response.

Whose Live Anyway?

Thursday, November 3rd

The boys are back in town. Whose Live Anyway? is a hilarious evening of improvised comedy and song all based on audience suggestions. Ryan Stiles leads the cast of fan favorite improv-comedians whose quick wits leave audiences spinning with laughter. 7:30 p.m. at Laxson Auditorium, 530-898-6333.

Soggy Dog Day Saturday, November 5th

CARD and TrailBlazer Pet Supply present the 3rd annual Soggy Dog Day, a dog fundraiser and free health fair.

Visit with various Chico pet organizations that are ready to answer your dog health questions. For a $10 donation, dogs can also enjoy a 30-minute session of water play, participate in the Dog Splash Competition, take home a goodie bag, and more.
