Championing Abilities, One Student at a Time
Caroline Roady has been a bright light in special education for over a decade, changing the way people see and support individuals with exceptional needs. If you spend five minutes with her, you’ll quickly realize two things: her heart beats for her students, and she believes every person has something extraordinary to offer.
Her philosophy is simple but powerful: every child is worth everyone’s time. She knows success looks different for every student and often shows up as a thousand small victories. “The key,” Caroline says, “is building real trust. When you’re genuine, they know it—and whether they’re verbal or not, they’ll connect with you.” She also emphasizes that behavior is communication, and understanding it is the foundation for a meaningful connection.
Caroline has dedicated years to ESN (Exceptional Support Needs) programs, mastering the art of individualized education. She celebrates what’s right rather than focusing on what’s wrong and believes every day is a fresh start. No bad moods or setbacks are carried over—just opportunity and optimism.
In addition to her work at Neal Dow Elementary School, Caroline teaches at Butte College, where she helps prepare the next generation of Independent Service Agreement (ISA) instructors. She covers essential topics like person-centered planning, inclusive environments, workplace regulations, and understanding behavior as a form of communication. She also teaches child development courses at Butte. Caroline brings energy, depth, and passion into her instruction. Her students don’t just learn— they transform.
Caroline’s journey isn’t just professional; it’s personal. When her son was diagnosed with autism, she realized how overwhelming navigating services and support could be. Instead of feeling defeated, she leaned in. She went back to school, studied hard, and became the advocate, teacher, and supporter that every family hopes to have in their corner.
Before becoming a teacher, Caroline served as the director for First 5’s Head Start program in Colusa, where she worked closely with families from all walks of life. Her husband, Vince, shares her
passion for special education as an ESN teacher, and together they have raised two exceptional kids, Graham and Hillary, alongside a quirky collection of pets that include ducks, chickens, and a turtle.
Outside of teaching, Caroline lives life to the fullest. She’s an active volunteer at her church, loves cooking, gardening, hosting friends, decorating her home, and pilates. Life is busy, joyful, and exactly how she likes it—surrounded by family, friends, and community. She’s even dreaming up future travel plans, always keeping an adventurous spirit.
For Caroline, special education isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. She brings out the best in her students, advocates fiercely for their needs, and reminds everyone around her that abilities, not disabilities, should define us. At the heart of it all, Caroline believes one thing: when we expect more from people, they often rise to the occasion. Her work is a daily reminder that disabilities don’t define people—their possibilities do. And Caroline is making sure the world sees that, one student at a time
Grocery Outlet: The Hidden Gem Moms Are Searching For
Let’s be honest—being a mom these days means being the CEO of household operations. Between juggling kids’ schedules, working, meal planning, and trying to stretch every dollar, we don’t just shop—we strategize. And in today’s economy, where eggs are practically a luxury item and snack time rivals a Costco run, smart moms need a store that’s more than just affordable—it needs to be reliable, exciting, and good for our families.
Enter Grocery Outlet. If you think you know it, think again.
Once dubbed the “gross-out” store by skeptical shoppers, Grocery Outlet has undergone a transformation in the last decade that rivals any HGTV makeover. Today, it’s a haven for busy, budget-savvy moms who love highquality brands, organic selections, and a shopping experience that actually feels fun. From leggings to home décor and organic meats to gluten-free snacks, you never quite know what you’ll find—but that’s half the fun.
Grocery Outlet’s unique model is simple but powerful: they scoop up name-brand products, fresh produce, and natural and organic goods at a discount, and pass the savings on to us. They operate on what’s called an “opportunistic buying” model, purchasing excess inventory, seasonal specials, closeouts, and overstocked items from trusted manufacturers at significantly reduced prices. These savings are then passed directly to customers, often adding up to 60% off what you’d pay at a traditional grocery store.
Their private label line also brings trusted quality at unbeatable prices—think one-stop shop with no coupon clipping required. And no, it’s not expired or “dented can” goods. These are the same brands you already buy, just for way less. Notice how many of your favorite Costco or Whole Foods items appear on the shelves here, only without the sticker shock.
Let’s talk cereal prices. The owners of the Paradise store said it best: “If you buy nothing else, buy your cereal here.” You’ll save big, and the kids will get the name brands they love. But it’s more than just cereal. Grocery Outlet has become a lifestyle for many families because when you can get organic produce, specialty cheeses, pantry staples, and clean-label snacks all in one trip without blowing your budget, it just makes sense.
To further enhance value, Grocery Outlet launched its GO Brands line: SimplyGO for everyday essentials, GO Home & Haven for household staples, and GO Paw & Pamper for pets. These private label products meet high standards while keeping prices low, so families never have to choose between quality and affordability.
And while the “treasure hunt” aspect is still alive and well—yes, you might find a $30 face cream for $5 or stock up on charcuterie ingredients for girls’ night—it’s not just about the thrill. It’s about discovering items that help you stretch your budget while still enjoying the things you love.
Best of all, each store is independently owned, giving it a mom-and-pop heart even with national brand support.
At Paradise Grocery Outlet, giving back is more than a motto—it’s a mission. Owners Wayne and Livia are deeply committed to the Ridge community, and locals notice. One resident remarked, “They’re setting the bar for community involvement.”
From major events to everyday acts of kindness, the couple continues to support countless organizations. They proudly participate in the Parade of Flags, Rotary fundraising, and the Chamber of Commerce. They also back Paradise Stronger, local schools and churches, Moms of the Ridge, and the arts. Their presence is felt at the Magalia Community Center, the disc golf course, and among groups like the Eagles and Moose Lodge. Wherever there’s a need, Wayne and Livia are ready to step up. Through each donation, volunteer hour, and community event, they help build a stronger, more connected Ridge. Paradise Grocery Outlet is not just a business—it's a vital part of the heart of the community.
Why Moms Should Make the Switch:
• Significant Savings: Up to 60% off name brands and essentials means you can fill your cart without emptying your wallet.
• Quality You Can Trust: GO Brand offers high standards without high prices.
New to Oroville, Jason and Misty bring with them over 25 years of experience in the grocery industry, including a strong background in premium products from their time with Holiday Market.
Originally from Redding, they’ve hit the ground running, pouring heart and hustle into their new community. As parents of three grown kids and proud grandparents to six, they understand how families need value without sacrificing quality. Their store strikes that balance—gourmet foods, name-brand snacks, GO Brand staples, and unexpected surprises that make you feel like you’ve won the day.
Jason and Misty are passionate about connecting with their customers and learning what matters most to local families. They’re eager to meet you, hear your story, and help you feed your family with confidence and savings. With their experience, energy, and care, Oroville’s Grocery Outlet is in great hands.
Christopher Hostettler has been at the helm of the Chico store since 2009 and has made it a true community staple.
A proud PV High grad and longtime Chico resident, Chris started at Albertsons before working through the grocery industry to eventually run his own store. He’s deeply involved in the local community—supporting nonprofits, raising funds for causes close to home, and building relationships with customers who’ve become like family.
When he’s not working, you’ll find him gardening or volunteering with his partner, Teresa Fierro, who also helps support store operations. Together, they bring warmth and reliability to every customer interaction.
In exciting news, Chris is about to unveil a new Grocery Outlet location in the Trader Joe’s shopping center, complete with easier parking and expanded offerings.
• Local Ownership, Local Impact: Each store owner is part of your community—invested, involved, and responsive.
• Surprising Finds: Thanks to their buying model, there’s always something new to discover—and love.
So why Grocery Outlet? Because moms deserve more than just groceries. They deserve a shopping experience that supports their families, respects their budgets, and reflects their values. Grocery Outlet delivers on all of that—and more. It’s where quality meets affordability, where local owners care, and where walking the aisles might just be the best part of your day. Feeding your family well shouldn’t come at the cost of your paycheck—or your peace of mind.

Fierce, Fearless, and 100% Herself
Some kids shine a little brighter—not because they try to, but because they’re completely, unapologetically themselves. Dannon Orozco is one of those rare stars. Whether you call her Dano, Dannado, or one of her many affectionate nicknames, one thing is always true: she follows her own path, on her own timeline, and with her whole heart.
Dannon is a kid who knows what she likes—and she likes a lot. Tornadoes? She can rattle off storm facts like a pro. Rocks and minerals? She’s got a growing collection and knows which ones are the coolest. Axolotls? Absolutely obsessed. She is endlessly curious, smart, and unafraid to dive deep into her favorite topics. She’s also a junior in Girl Scouts, where she continues to grow in leadership and confidence.
This year, Dannon took some major leaps—most notably, stepping way outside her comfort zone to sing in her firstever talent show. With a mic in hand and her signature hair bow in place (because hair matters and hers is always just right), Dannon showed everyone what bravery looks like. It wasn’t just a performance but a powerful moment of growth and self-expression.
Dannon is also having one of her best school years yet. She adores her teachers and has made incredible progress as an exceptional learner. With a sharp sense of humor, keen attention to detail, and a wonderfully honest approach to life, she continues to surprise and delight everyone around her. She’s learning to stretch, try new things, and jump into the unfamiliar—always with a sparkle of determination and a little sass.
Family is everything to Dannon. She cherishes time with her Nana and her aunties, some of her biggest cheerleaders. At home, her sister Ashby and brother Heston are her partners in crime—especially Ashby, who always has Dannon’s back. Whether it’s covering her ears when the world gets too loud or giving up her last French fry, Ashby’s quiet acts of love speak volumes.
Her dad, Joey, is her steady support, and her mom, Morgan, is her fiercest advocate and a community leader. Morgan serves as PTA president at Marigold Elementary and on the Special Education Parent Advisory Council for Chico Unified. Her passion for supporting all learners started at home and now helps shape families' experiences throughout the district.
Dannon’s story isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being brave, curious, honest, and unafraid to stand out. It’s about loving deeply, laughing loudly, and learning more daily. She’s a storm-chaser, a singer, a rock collector, and a girl who walks through life with purpose and pride. Above all, Dannon reminds us that the best kind of kid is the kind who stays true to exactly who they are.

Love cleaning or hate it?
No matter where you land on the spectrum, we all have to spend some time thinking about how we clean. Our choices impact not only ourselves but also our families, pets, homes, and overall health.
Over the past few years, I’ve been on a mission to simplify my cleaning routine and become more intentional about the products I bring into my home. I no longer rely solely on what’s marketed to me or what I grew up using. By taking a moment to pause, read labels, and understand ingredients and habits, I’ve discovered simple, effective ways to create a healthier home environment.
Here’s something eye-opening: household dust can contain up to 45 potentially toxic chemicals, including known carcinogens. This “toxic dust” is created when ordinary dust traps harmful chemicals released from everyday consumer products like household cleaners and personal care items. But there’s good news—dusting regularly can make a big difference. Start from the top: clean walls, ceiling fans, and light fixtures first, then work your way down. Use a vacuum with a quality filter and microfiber cloths on walls, blinds, and windowsills. You’ll reduce the need for traditional cleaners, reduce buildup, and clean less often.
Don’t overlook your entryway. According to the EPA, 85% of contaminants are brought into our homes on the soles of our shoes within the first four steps. A sturdy entry mat, removing shoes at the door, and regular vacuuming can significantly reduce the spread of outdoor toxins indoors.
While some of these facts may feel unsettling, knowledge truly is power. Understanding the impact of toxins allows you to make more informed choices that benefit your health and future generations.
My journey toward a healthier home began eight years ago when my kids were small. I vividly remember blocking my toddler from entering the bathroom after using a harsh chemical cleaner. The fumes were overwhelming, and that moment made me stop and question everything I thought I knew about “clean.” I was introduced to Norwex and its powerhouse product, the EnviroCloth, and I haven’t looked back since.
With just water and highdensity microfiber, Norwex cloths can remove up to 99% of bacteria from surfaces. The fine, star-shaped fibers scrub
efficiently, leaving behind no chemical residue or harsh fumes—just clean surfaces and peace of mind. My kids can help safely, saving us time and money. Good Housekeeping recently named the EnviroCloth “Best Overall” in microfiber cleaning cloths.
Another often-overlooked contributor to home health is indoor air quality. Americans spend around 90% of their time indoors, where pollutant levels are often 2–5 times higher than outdoors. Crack a window—even in winter— ventilate stuffy rooms, clean your screens, and replace air filters frequently to keep your home’s air fresh.
It’s a harsh realization that not everything sold in stores is safe. Over the past 50 years, more than 84,000 chemicals have been introduced in the U.S., but only 200 have been tested for safety. The U.S. bans just 11 chemicals from personal care products, compared to over 1,300 banned in the European Union. It’s up to us to be informed consumers.
Helpful resources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG.org), the EWG Healthy Living App, the Yuka App, and Clearya allow you to research and scan everyday products for harmful ingredients. Yuka rates food and cosmetics, breaking down nutrient quality and chemical risks. Clearya lets you browse store inventories and suggests safer alternatives to common products.
You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight, but small changes add up when you focus on what you can control. Your home should be your safe place— and it starts with the choices you make each day.
I Only saw Strength
I wrote this from my mama heart, but also as a way to show how resiliency improves mental health after my daughter Mayah broke her arm and was life-flighted to UC Davis. A normally scary experience can be terrifying, yet can have so many small moments where one can draw strength and safety. Those moments are there if you look for them. I hope this heartcentered poem inspires you to find your strength in challenging experiences.
I Only Saw Strength
They told me I’d see trauma, But I only saw strength.
My daughter’s cries amidst the X-rays, She was comforted in my arms. I only saw love.
Her quiet pleading, “I’m firsty, Mama.” But the surgery was coming “soon.” I only saw patience.
The young ER nurse who listened, Her own child had an emergency the night before, I only saw compassion.
The flight nurses chatted with me at 1 am, They had a deep passion for their work. I only saw valor.
The 18-year-old who crashed his car into a brick wall, His Mama putting on a brave face while holding his hand. I only saw peace.
The 4-day-old baby screaming as they searched for a vein, Her foster mom, with five kids at home, advocating for her. I only saw bravery.
All of the parents waiting for their kids in surgery, Holding and leaning on each other. I only saw hope.
The surgeon and surgical staff who put their personal lives on hold, To help my whole world’s tiny arm. I only saw heroes.
My little girl who woke up from surgery, With a sparkly light blue cast and no pain. I only saw courage.
Some may see trauma when they look around,
But I only saw strength.

Summer resources for families with special needs
As parents, we all look forward to summer, but let’s be honest, it can also bring anxiety as we try to keep our kids entertained and socially engaged. This is especially true for families of children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. So, what resources are available in our community?
Chico Area Recreation District has ramped up its inclusion team and now offers a variety of summer camps and recreational activities for families with special needs. They work to ensure equal access to recreational programs, such as classes, sports, swim lessons, after-school programs, camps, and more, offering a 1:1 inclusion aide to assist program participants who benefit from a little extra support to succeed. To receive accommodations, participants must register for an activity or program and submit a completed accommodation request form no later than four weeks
before the start date of the activity or program. Contact the inclusion team at inclusion@chicorec.gov for more information.
Durham Recreation and Park District offers adaptive swim lessons on the last three Saturdays in July (7/12, 7/19, and 7/26). Registration opens June 1st. Email DurhamRecAdmin@Durhamrec.com or call the main office at (530) 345-1921
Impact Speech Therapy is offering three different summer programs:
Tiny Talkers – A playful group focused on early speech and language development through songs, movement, and social interaction. Great for little ones building communication skills in a supportive environment.
Sensory Stars – A movement-based class that supports sensory processing and primitive reflex integration through playful, hands-on activities. This group helps lay the groundwork for improved regulation, attention, and the development of communication and learning skills.
Mighty Minds – A brain-based group designed to strengthen cognitive skills such as working memory, flexible thinking, attention, and emotional regulation. Through targeted activities, movement, and mindful strategies, this class supports the development of executive functioning in a fun and structured environment.
Each class is designed to support communication skills and cognitive wellness in its own way. Call them at (530) 961-6090 to help determine which group best fits your child.
Little Red Hen offers two summer programs for Far Northern Regional Center users: Not Your Garden Variety Theater and F.L.O.C.K.
Not Your Garden Variety Theater maintains a 3:1 child/instructor ratio. It boasts a full production of The Wizard of Oz while addressing core social deficits through role-playing, performing arts, music, sensory exploration, peer collaboration, and theater activities. It begins May 30th and runs for 6 weeks, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for kids ages 4-17. Email brooke@littleredhen.org for more info.
F.L.O.C.K. (Feeling Like One Common Kid) maintains a 3:1 child/instructor ratio and is a 3-week socialization therapy program that follows a curriculum and focuses on community integration. It offers a structured and supportive environment for kids to learn how to advocate for themselves and develop meaningful peer relationships through role play, group games, science, art, and field trips. F.L.O.C.K. is for kids ages 6-15 and runs from July 14th to 31st, Monday-Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Email rachel@littleredhen.org to learn more.

Since opening its doors in 2004, Tbar has been redefining how we enjoy tea. Launched when tea culture was still new in the U.S., Tbar set out to make tea fun, approachable, and family-friendly, offering frosts, freezes, and sparkling iced teas with fresh fruit that feel more like treats than traditional brews. Chico was the original location, and it quickly gained a loyal following. With over 50 popular tea beverages, Tbar pairs its drinks with a menu of build-your-own bowls and wraps packed with fresh, healthy ingredients made from scratch. They cater to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences, too. Families especially love the $7.35 kids bowl with choice of teriyaki chicken or mango pork. Kick off your week with some serious flavor. Every Monday from 4-8 PM, enjoy any bowl or wrap for just $10 available in-store only (Custom add-ons may cost a little extra). Our unique town of Chico and the surrounding areas are bursting with things to do and places to see, especially during those hot summer months. There are beautiful parks and playgrounds, incredible lakes and creeks, and when it’s too hot and time to head indoors, there are plenty of options there, too!
While Butte County is known for some pretty intense summer heat, there are various ways to stay cool and get your kids out of the house to explore! As @MomWhatsNextChico on Instagram (two moms of five kids combined), here are a few of our favorite things to do in Chico and the surrounding areas during those summer days.
Gymnastics open gym at Tumbling on the Ridge:
This fun spot is located at 1080 Ewald Court in Paradise, where the owner, Ashley, offers open gym every Thursday! With three time slots, you can find the perfect hour for your kids to burn off some energy. There’s a wide range of fun equipment for the kids to choose from: mats, ramps, hula hoops, and balls. Our kids love the big trampoline and balance beams! This is perfect for kids ages 1-12. Pricing and calendar updates can be found on their Instagram page: @tumbling_on_the_ridge.
Pick fresh fruit at L&T Farms:
You won’t regret stepping into Butte County’s rich agricultural community. L&T Farms is fun for families of all ages and stages! The owners are knowledgeable and kind, the stone fruits are impeccable, and you can’t beat the feeling of picking your own food straight from the source! Check their Instagram @ltfarms for updates on opening weekend and when fruit is ready for picking. They are typically open Friday through Sunday in the mornings.
Stroll Chico’s Thursday Night Market:
You can’t beat local farmer stands, face painting, food truck vendors, local desserts, and live music, with many of
Downtown Chico’s best stores open, too! This Thursday evening event runs until September 25 from 6-9 pm. The streets in Downtown Chico are closed to vehicles, so it’s the perfect spot to bring a stroller and let the little ones wander in the streets (while you’re watching them, of course)! Don’t forget to find the famous balloon creator; every kid wants special balloon designs from him! We recommend getting there early to find nearby parking and a short walk into downtown. Be sure to check out this summertime staple!
Enjoy the 2nd Annual Fourth of July Parade in Chico:
Nothing says summer better than a parade! This will be the second year that CARD will coordinate a parade through
Downtown Chico on the morning of the 4th of July. The parade is full of creative floats from local businesses, and it’s a great way to kick off this patriotic holiday. It’s a can’t-miss event and fun for the whole family! Check CARD’s Instagram @chicorec for updates.
Cool off at the Durham Pool, Chapman Splash Park, or walk along the creek via Yahi Trail in Upper Bidwell Park: There’s a reason the Durham Pool has been around for 50 years—it’s a fantastic place to go during our sweltering summers! With slides, a diving board, and a shallow kids' pool, it’s the perfect spot for the whole family. And if you don’t feel like packing for the pool, just head to Chapman Park, where you can let your kids run in Chico’s only splash pad! Up for more of an adventure? Our kids love hiking the Yahi Trail in Upper Bidwell Park and cooling off in one of the many swimming holes along the way.
Movies in the Pool:
Just when you thought swimming couldn’t get any better during the summer
season, think again! There are two new movie locales we know you’re going to love! Dive-In Movie Night premieres on Saturday, June 7th, with the movie Twister from 7-10 pm in the PV pool at 2320 North Avenue in Chico. On July 5th, they’ll show Moana 2 at the same location. Bring your lounge chairs, floaties, towels, blankets, and prepare to have a wonderful time with the kiddos. Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at www.chicorec.gov or at the pool, and snacks, drinks, popcorn, and ice cream will also be available for purchase!
Party at the Pool will begin on June 14th at 5600 Recreation Drive in Paradise and feature Moana 1. Doors open at 8 pm, the movie starts at 9, and will conclude at 11 pm. It will continue on Saturday, July 12th at the same time with Pirates of the Caribbean. Entry is free and more information can be found online at www.paradiseprpd.com.
There are plenty more events available to you and yours this summer. Head on over to page 29 for a complete list!

Woodstock's Pizza in Chico sees more than half of its business from local families, and for good reason. As one of Woodstock’s initial locations, it offers a fun, relaxed space where parents can unwind with a drink (they now have a full liquor license) while kids enjoy the freedom to be themselves. The restaurant is dog-, family- and sports-friendly, with its central downtown patio offering misters in the summer and open-mic nights during Thursday Night Markets. Woodstock’s prioritizes dietary inclusivity with in-house-made dough options like whole wheat, cauliflower, and gluten-free rice flour crusts, plus Happy Cow vegan cheese and flexible customization for picky eaters. The popular “Two for Tuesday” deal offers a free large cheese pizza with any large or extra-large pizza purchase. Known for great value, Woodstock’s continues to operate its own delivery service, maintaining quality and convenience for the Chico community while also supporting youth sports like Chico Little League and East Side Little League.
Tres Hombres
WoodstocksChico
WoodstocksChico
www.WoodstocksChico.com
Mom’s Restaurant has been a Chico favorite since it opened in December 2009. Created by Jack and Darien Sterling—industry veterans with decades of experience—the business was created as a tribute to Chico's moms and the love they put into everything they do. Now in its 16th year, Mom’s serves breakfast and lunch classics made from scratch, just like at your grandmother’s house—think biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, and chicken fried steak and eggs. Their omelettes are to die for, and you’ll find no shortage of things to explore with family-submitted photos scattered throughout the cozy, home-style restaurant. Top sellers include chocolate chip pancakes for kids, the Gnarly Scramble for meat lovers, and various Benedicts with fresh Hollandaise made multiple times daily. Don’t miss their over-the-top, boozy, and family-friendly milkshakes, and always bring an appetite as their portions are more than generous.
A Chico favorite for 38 years, Tres Hombres remains a hotspot for locals and visitors of all ages. Known for its fun energy and lively atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where families can enjoy a night out without worrying about volume. Translation: Kids are more than welcome here. Snag a seat at the taco bar if there’s space available and settle in for dinner and a show rolled into one. During the summer months, few places are more enjoyable than their charming patio. Tres Hombres recently refreshed its menu, adding upgraded items like new bowls and a quesadita salad. Best of all, they kept prices affordable. Families especially love Wednesdays, as kids eat free with the purchase of a “favorites” menu item or a two-item combo. Happy Hour runs daily from 3–6 p.m., featuring crowdpleasers for all ages. Treat the family to something special at Tres Hombres tonight!
