As summer break comes to an end and the new school year starts, I begin to wonder, how did my children grow up so quickly? It seems like just the other day I was changing diapers and planning my day around nap schedules, and now they are headed off to Jr. High School! It is times such as these that remind me to slow down and enjoy the little things; take in those special moments with your kids. I know the days seem extremely long when you have little ones, but the years go by so fast.

We have a few articles and tips in this issue to help you and your children with the back to school transition. We also have many events happening this fall, so be sure to check out our calendar of events. Don’t miss our annual pumpkin patch map. We are so lucky to live in an area with so many fun pumpkin patches to visit!

I want to thank everyone for coming out to our 5th Annual Growing Up Chico Night on July 14th. We had a great turnout; I think it was our biggest one yet! We owe it all to our advertisers for helping to make this truly a one of a kind event. See you next year for our 6th Annual!

Sarah Lyons Sarah is a mom to six children, and she loves all that goes along with a new school year. This year she will send her daughter off to kindergarten and the family is experiencing a little anxiety and a lot of excitement.

23RD ANNUAL DAYS OF LIVING HISTORY Step back in time and have some fun!

The Gold Nugget Museum is proud to present the 23rd Annual Days of Living History on Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th from 11am to 4 pm.

This is an opportunity for children to experience life in the “good old days,� from the 1850s to 1950. Parents and grandparents will also enjoy a walk down Memory Lane. This wonderful family event features activities and displays highlighting 100 years of life on the Paradise Ridge.

Children love to play and to make things. At Days of Living History, there are many hands-on activities. Under the guidance of museum volunteers, children

can make candles, birdhouses, rope, jam, bread, and cornhusk dolls. They can try carpentry, flower pounding, tin art, laundry, and more. There is a barbershop for the boys and a beauty salon for the girls. Old-time games, gold panning, a bake walk, a branding display, blacksmith, firearms display, and apple polisher are among the offerings.

Admission is $5 and includes all the activities and supplies. Children aged three and under are admitted free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The event will take place at the Gold Nugget Museum, 502 Pearson Road in Paradise. For additional information, please call 872-8722.

How do I Choose a Music Class for My Preschooler?

ou turn on the radio to listen to your favorite music while you begin dusting the furniture, when you notice that your 9 month old is holding onto the coffee table bouncing up and down!

Does your two year old’s eyes light up when they hear, “Let it Go” from Frozen? Has your 3 year old created his/her own music studio out of pots and pans and wooden spoons?

Maybe it is time to find a music class for your budding musician!

Finding a music class can be a toilsome task to say the least.

Here are 6 tips for looking for a music class that is just right for your little one: 1. Knowledgeable Sales People – When you make the initial call, does the person at the other end know what they have to offer? The receptionist will be able to help you find just the right class to fit the needs of your little one by asking detailed questions about your child. They will have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

2. Quality – Is the music school reputable and do they offer a well-rounded music education for children? A quality school will be open and transparent and educate you in why their school is the best choice for your child. The curriculum will be developmentally appropriate and their teachers will be family connectors, well prepared, knowledgeable and funloving.

3. Delivery – The delivery of the perfect music school will be top notch! The teachers treat families in a professional manner, are genuinely interested in every aspect of your child and will know how to best involve your child in the class. They will be compassionate, patient and understanding in all circumstances.

4. Service – A reputable music school will be so confident in their program that they put the customer first and offer a money-back guarantee. Back to School Home Organization Tips

ummer flies by and another new school year begins before you have a chance to relax from the previous school year! I remember when my kids were younger and I always felt especially frazzled when a new school year started. Everything seemed to come at us at once: papers to sign, new schedules, new rules, school supplies to get, school clothes to buy, sign-ups for volunteering, sports, etc. As I look back, I realize that, as time went on, I started doing little things to make the next school year start off on a more positive note, and to keep us more organized during the year. Now that I have two middle schoolers and a high schooler, I still keep fine tuning the organization, but I now do more decluttering. In doing so, the school year starts off smoothly.

I have recently realized that life feels calmer when things are more organized and I am slowly recognizing that the act of decluttering helps me to get more organized. If I take the time to get rid of stuff, it clears my mind a bit and I am happier. Believe me when I say, “I have come a long way” with my clutter and disorganization. Do not get me wrong, I still have miles to go, but I will share what I have done that has helped me and my family get more organized.

I have read about the theories of decluttering, but to be honest, I have to forget about the “what gives you joy” method of organizing for the time being. Little of this school stuff gives me a ton of joy and I would toss a lot of it; but I need to be reasonable and try to get what needs to be in the house as organized as I can. It is important to focus on what will make your life run more efficiently. In the long run, you will have more time to focus on the joyful things.

I know you are busy, so I am going to make this as short as possible so you do not have to lock yourself in the bathroom in order to finish a mile long article. I consider myself the queen of lists, so I will share my organizational tips with you in a list (of sorts). Look down the list and see if anything interests you. You can just read about those items that you want to try (guilt free), or you can tear out the list, mark it up, improve upon it; it is your magazine!

Find the space and assign a purpose.

What spaces are needed to make your days run more smoothly? What is the purpose of the space? I have some shelves in the kids’ playroom that were cluttered with toys, papers, books, and God only knows what else. I decided to assign shelves just for books and in another bookcase, I put baskets for the toys. My kids are older, so I was able to put little toy pieces in clear jars. The jars look cute and organized on the shelves. Having the items in their own place makes clean up easy and it looks nice.

2.

Limit the number of toys and books in the kids’ rooms.

Give away old books and toys to the Salvation Army, Arc, or another family member with children younger than yours. Keep the favorite books and the toys your child, or children, play with regularly. Try to keep these things in one or two rooms. We try to keep most toys in the playroom. If the kids bring toys or games in another room, I have them clean up right when they are done, so we can have the room back and it will not turn into a minefield of stuff.

3.

Set up a bin or basket for extra school supplies.

My kids always need more mechanical pencils, expo markers, felt tip markers, folders, bookmarks, index cards, lined paper and drawing paper throughout the year. We also keep craft supplies in the bin such as glue, colored paper, scissors, and tape for that last minute project.

This year, I am putting a ream of computer paper, some flash drives, and an extra ink cartridge into the bin.

If some of the stuff does not get used, keep it for next year or donate it at the end of the school year when supplies are scarce in the classroom.

4.

Know important dates before the school year begins.

Have a central calendar and if you have a calendar on smart phones or other devices, sync them with family members. Mark the holidays, minimum days, appointments, work schedules, and

any information you may have for the school year. The school and district calendars are on the district and school websites. You should also be getting a packet of papers to sign (sarcastic “yay”) that will have important dates listed, as well as transportation pick up/drop off times. As the information comes home, record the dates immediately. Bring your calendar to Back to School Night so you can add dates for volunteering, PTA meetings, field trips, parent conferences, or any other information you may get that night. A dry-erase board or chalkboard may work great for some families that need switch out activities regularly.

5.

Prepare folders, portfolios, or files for your children’s important papers, artwork, and returned work.

After you review work, decide if you really need to keep it. You do not have to announce when you need to make some papers disappear.

Keep things that they may need for the year for review or important writings, math milestones, etc. Take pictures of spur of the moment “art” and keep the pieces you would frame or put on a bulletin board. I have a portfolio for each kid and I file special items away into a bin each year if I do not use the art for décor.

I actually wallpapered the playroom walls with important artwork and it really is a special room.

6.

Keep a file for “papers to sign and/or return to school.”

7.

Keep books the kids are currently reading in one place.

I used to search frantically all over the dang place for papers that I needed to sign the night before they were due (or the morning they were due). I had piles of papers everywhere! Once I got a simple folder and labeled it “to sign,” I wondered, “What kind of crazy woman would have done it the old way?” This folder can have information from school, permission slips and other important school business papers. One folder can prevent the papers from getting mixed in with bills, receipts, and other non-school mail.

Assign an area just for the books your kids are reading for school. I have a book/magazine holder made out of a wood pallet and there are three sections for reading materials. I labeled one for each kid. I ask what they are reading for the night or weekend, and I keep the books in one place. This is great for library books so they will not get lost.

8.

Designate a homework area.

Decide now where the kids can sit down and focus to get homework done. My kids do not like to sit together to do homework. One sits at a desk, and two sit at different places in the kitchen or family room.

If desks are where they study, let your children customize their desk area so they look forward to studying and hanging out in their

spaces daily. Colorful storage bins, baskets and other organizers can be personalized so the desk is somewhere they want to be.

9.

Make morning and after school as routine as possible.

If kids have a list of what to check off in the morning, you may not have to remind each kid several times about what to do to get out the door. My kids freak out less if they know exactly what they need to do in the morning. We also get lunches, water bottles, backpacks, and clothes out the night before and that makes the mornings easier. After school, I have my kids take out their homework and put it in a certain place (we put it with the reading materials), hang their jackets on hooks, get out their water bottles/lunch boxes from their backpacks, and put the backpacks in a fun antique wooden crate in the playroom. The backpacks got heavier over time, so we could not hang them anymore. After they unload, I have them get a healthy snack and I give them a half hour of free time to do whatever they want before they do three chores and start homework.

10.

Create a calming routine for the evenings.

Evening routines vary, but if you find time to give undivided attention to your kids, they tend to sleep better. I find that when I am too busy to snuggle, talk, play a quiet game, or read a book, my kids ask for that time at bedtime or all night long! Taking those moments out to create a nice routine opens up more time after the kids are asleep.

11.

Do a walk through before the school year begins.

I read some great advice in a blog about doing a run through of the routine and organization you have created. Walk through the different areas of your home and explain how the organization system will work for everyone. Show them what to do when they walk in the door and you will find they feel a part of the team and take pride in the routines. It also keeps parents a little happier when they do not have to keep picking up after, and reminding kids of what to do every second.

12.

Prepare your kids for the unknown.

After my son had several meltdowns when plans had changed, I made sure to explain to my children that the routine may be altered and those times can be exciting. If I know a change in the routine ahead of time, I give the kids ample notice. They need to adjust their brains and get used to the idea of change. Sometimes just saying, “In five minutes we are going to”… helps prevent meltdowns.

Every year before school starts, I look up DIY organizing tips on Pinterest, but they are not always practical for my family. I have tried some things and they have failed miserably. If something works, stick with it and share your knowledge with friends or on social media.

When organizing, decide what is most important about your routine, and organize to make your routine help your life be a little easier. It will also free up some time that you can dedicate to family fun!

Train as a CASA, (Court Appointed Special Advocate), or join the CASA Superhero Runs in Chico and Redding

S

uperheroes will not be leaping over tall buildings, but they will be out in the open, running for a good cause and having fun in the process. You can see them in their Superhero regalia at the Superhero Fun Run in Chico’s Bidwell Park, September 17th and Redding’s Civic Auditorium, November 5th. They are raising eyebrows, money, and awareness; sprinting towards the finish line of the 10K, 5K and Little Heroes Dash. All running for the benefit of CASA, volunteer powered program.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a program that matches trained community volunteers with children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment. The CASA volunteers must pass an extensive background investigation and complete a structured 40-hour training program. They are sworn Officers of the Court and are assigned as an advocate for a child or sibling groups in the court system.

A child assigned to a CASA has a stable, committed adult in his or her life. Often, the oneon-one relationship between a CASA volunteer and child is the most positive relationship this youth has. In a way, it is like having his or her very own Superhero!

These are some of the most at-risk children in our community who are not faring well in the foster care system. The CASAs will stay as advocates with their youth from placement to placement, between school changes, social worker changes, and throughout the court process. They are there championing, advocating, mentoring, and making sure big things and little things do not fall through the cracks. While the often overburdened social worker is required to divide attention between as many as 100 children in a case load, the CASA volunteer can give a child his or her full attention.

Tracy Hunsicker, a CASA volunteer, notes: “Within a few months, I was the one person that knew my thirteen year old CASA youth best. This youth had changed homes, schools, and social

workers and I was the one consistent adult that knew the back ground, the behind the scenes dramas, the small slights- the real story. I could report to the Judge what truly was happening.”

There are many ways to support children in the dependency system. Come join the fun at the fourth annual Super Hero Run. CASA volunteers and supporters will don their finest superhero costumes and take part in 5K and 10K races, while younger attendees get their own capes and take part in the Little Heroes Dash. Afterwards, partake in a delicious pancake breakfast, included in your entrance fee. You can also purchase Pancake Breakfast tickets the day of the race. Lower Bidwell Park in Chico’s run is September 17th, and November 5th is at the Redding Civic Auditorium. However the heroes are dressed, there are about 1,500 at-risk kids who can benefit from the money generated by run participants. ‘All children need a hero, but abused and neglected children need a Superhero,’ Money raised during the CASA Superhero Run stays in the North State to train, assign and support CASA volunteers.

You can wear a cape and run 10 kilometers to be a hero, or you can step in and volunteer your time as a CASA to a child in need. These children are in a difficult situation through no fault of their own. You can help these kiddos. It is ordinary people doing something extraordinary for children. It takes a few very simple things: spending time, being consistent and a being positive influence.

Dr. Dolittle Jr. Hops, Trots, Crawls and Flies onto the Laxson Auditorium Stage this September

magine if we could talk to animals! This September, Chico Performances and Blue Room Young Company are bringing the one person who can (and that would be Dr. Dolittle, of course!) to the Laxson Auditorium stage, in the wacky and magical musical—Dr. Dolittle, Jr.! This fall, join us on a journey to the far corners of the world in this classic tale of adventure, kindness, and unlikely friendships.

All of the talking animals we have come to love through the stories of Hugh Lofting and the hit movie musical will come to life, thanks to the young local talents at the Blue Room Young Company.

More than twenty kids, between the ages of 7 and 16, will be hopping, trotting, and swimming their way into your heart, with their performances of Dr. Dolittle, Jr. on September 22nd.

This 50-minute shortened stage version tells the beloved tale of a wacky, but kind, Doctor who can talk to animals. Knowing almost 500 animal languages, Dr. Dolittle plans an adventure to seek out the Great Pink Sea Snail—the oldest and wisest creature on earth. The Doctor’s quest takes the audience on a journey full of twists and turns, from the small village of Puddlebyin-the-Marsh to the far corners of the world.

Dr. Dolittle, Jr. is a wonderfully witty show that is fun for the whole family!

Starring in the title role of Dr. Dolittle, is 12 year old, Ethan Hoe, of Marsh Jr. High School. This will be Ethan’s first time acting and singing in a local production.

Regardless of his inexperience, Ethan is extremely excited to tackle the big stage of Laxson Auditorium.

Madline Mugg, Dr. Dolittle’s devoted, yet sassy, best friend, will be played by 12 year old Molly Brown, also from Marsh Jr. High School. Unlike her counterpart, Molly has been acting since she was 5 years old, starring in several other Junior productions, including: Frog and Toad Jr., 101 Dalmations Jr., and Sleeping Beauty Jr., to name a few.

The role of Polynesia—a silly, wise, and confident parrot—will be played by 13 year old Seven Mills of Core Butte Charter School. Starring in the role of the highspirited Tommy Stubbins is 11 year old Lilia Chavira of Chico Jr. High School. Lilia has been acting since she was 6 years old and is excited about her first lead role.

Amber Miller, who is the director and set designer of Dr. Dolittle Jr., says, “The message of respect and kindness to all, one another and our furry friends, is an important in this production. It is a great message told in a really lively and fun way.”

Miller says that the set, costumes, and production will be bright and dynamic. “The one thing that encompasses most scenes is the ocean,” says Miller, “we will use flats, fabric and different lighting, sky colors and furniture to alter locations—all of which will help bring the Doctor’s adventure to life.”

For the last two years, Rauter has worked on the Young Company productions at the Blue Room—Alice and Wonderland, Jr. being her first. “I am very excited for this one,” says Rauter, “I love the music in this musical, and the story is fun and entertaining. I can’t wait to see it on the big stage!”

Featured in this junior version are some

of the classic songs from the hit movie musical, including: “My Friend, the Doctor,” “Talk to the Animals,” and “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It.” The kids have been hard at work with musical director Addison Desantis. “I am very excited to go through the process of learning the songs together and feeding off of the fantastic energy and enthusiasm all the kids have; they really put their whole hearts into what they’re doing,” says Desantis.

A free preview of Dr. Dolittle, Jr. will be at this year’s Chico World Music Festival on the Kid’s Stage, on September 10th from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. In addition, a sponsor performance preview will be held for the patients at Enloe Rehabilitation Center.

The cast of Dr. Dolittle, Jr. will perform three performances at Laxson Auditorium at CSU Chico on Thursday, September 22—two morning performances for students as part of the Chico Performances Field Trip Series, and one evening show at 7:30 p.m. for the general public. by Georgia Alvarez, in memory of her son Joseph who died of a very rare and terminal form of leukemia in January of 1991. Since “Wings” inception, over a million dollars have been raised to help children in and about northern California who have various forms of serious, life threatening illnesses, with preference given to pediatric cancer cases. Hundreds of families who have a child with a serious illness have been served by “Wings,” relieving their financial and emotional burdens. “Wings of Eagles” is an all-denominational, nonprofit, public benefit corporation. All funds raised directly benefit families who have a seriously ill child.

Chico World Music Festival

ultures vary all around the world, differing in language, mindsets, values and beliefs, but one thing that nearly every culture has an appreciation and fascination for is music. The Chico World Music Festival emphasizes the importance of world music by bringing together songs, instruments, and artists from all over the world. The beautiful campus of California State University, Chico, will be hosting this free Festival on September 10th, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This year marks the 23rd Chico World Music Festival tradition and it is safe to say this event only gets better year after year.

Art, music, and of course, food are the cornerstones of the Chico World Music Festival, showcasing cultures from far and wide.

Thirteen groups, along with crafts hosted by the Museum of Anthropology, art classes by the Chico Art Center, and an interactive science booth by the Gateway Science Museum, are all showcased at this event, completely free. Artisans from all over the world will be selling beautiful crafts, jewelry, clothes and more throughout the festival, along with different international food booths to satisfy your hunger.

Four different stages and a wide variety performances and workshops are the main focus of the Chico World Music Festival. The Sycamore Stage in front of Kendall Hall, the Ruth Rowland Taylor stage and the one of a kind Laxson Auditorium, all together, host double features of five amazing and unique world music groups. Featured will be: Troker- a combination of jazz, rock and funk with some Mexican flare, mixed in are Karamo Susso and Oussey Nou Kouyate performing West African music and dancing; The Arabic Music Quartet with music from the Middle East; the young bluegrass fiddling star, Mathew Songmaker, along with his band The December Bicyclists; and French music from the band SonoMusette.

For kids, activities abound at the Chico World Music Festival.

The Museum of Anthropology will have free and fun crafts to take home. The Chico Art Center is hosting art classes for kids while Good Vibrations, an interactive science booth, will be put on by the Gateway Museum of Science, teaching kids and adults how vibrations create sounds, as well as how our ears detect them.

The Festival also has its own stage dedicated to kids with performances by kids, hosting a wide variety of free performances

that are fun for all ages. The children will not be able to stop dancing after Ann’s Dance Workshop and the Chico Creek Dance Centre perform on stage. They can even learn traditional Mexican folk dance from Ballet Folklorico.

Musical performances will be put on at the kid’s stage as well, including a preview of the upcoming of Dr. Dolittle, Jr. put on by the talented child actors of Blue Room Young Company. There will be a performance of the children’s play, Mi Escuelita Maya, musical performances from The Wright Keys Academy of Musical Arts, and the Marsh Jr. High School Concert Band. To top everything off, the Book Bike will stop by to satisfy readers of all genres, put on by the Butte County Library. Reduce First Day Jitters

As kids pack up their new backpacks, sharpen their pencils, and try on their new fall clothes, most start to get excited about the first day of school. While the beginning of the school year is an exciting time and represents a new start, some kids may feel anxious about the unknown. A new teacher, new classmates, or a new school can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.

Using some simple strategies, parents can help prepare their children for the first day and ease their concerns.

Start with the Basics

When children are well rested and have full tummies, they are better prepared for a busy day.

Start adjusting bedtime, and wake up times, a week or more in advance so the child has time to adjust to the new school routine.

A healthy and filling breakfast starts children off on the right foot. When these needs are met, parents and kids can work together to tackle school anxiety.

Talk it Through

Allow your child to talk about his feelings. Help him list the specific things that he is worrying about. Instead of brushing aside worry, let him know it is natural to be nervous and you will help him adjust to a new school. Try reading some age appropriate children’s books about the first day of school jitters.

Discuss the Plan

Walk your child through what she can expect on the first day.

Discuss her transportation and daily schedule at school. If the child has specific worries, try to address when they will happen during day. For some, role playing can help them feel more comfortable. Begin the day as you would a typical school morning. Prepare breakfast, get dressed, and pack bags as if you are going to school. Act out the child’s day and “play school.”

Take turns being the teacher.

Making it a game can make the child more comfortable when the real day approaches.

Focus on the Positive

Often parents are just as anxious about their child going off to school as the student. Focus on the positive when you talk to your child about school.

Make it exciting by having your child pick out a new backpack, school supplies, and an outfit for the first day. Encourage older siblings to help by talking about the fun things they will experience at school. Ask your child what they are excited about. Watch your own anxiety on the first day and try to behave in a calm and positive way.

Take a Tour

If the school has a “Meet the Teacher” night, take advantage of this time to show the child the classroom, become familiar with the surroundings, and introduce them to the teacher.

This will allow the child to feel more comfortable in their surroundings on the first day.

Encourage Friendships When a child recognizes a friendly face in the classroom, it can make them feel much more at ease. Encourage your child to meet other children in the neighborhood that will be in the same class. Host a play date or a class picnic for the kids.

Talk with the Teacher

If anxiety persists after the first few days of school, contact the teacher and share your concerns.

She may have some suggestions on how to deal with student’s anxiety and will be aware of the situation. Often times, a teacher who knows a child is dealing with anxiety will give them extra support in the classroom.

Reward for Bravery

The first day of school can be a stressful time, reward your child for their bravery with a small toy, a special dessert, or a trip to their favorite park. It takes a lot of courage to try something new and it should be recognized.

Happy New Year?

As a child, a student, and a parent, the ‘new year’ did not start with January first, but many months before with the first day of school. In preparation, I would notice how my son had matured over the summer, grown out of his shoes, made new friends, and developed new skills. I would hope that I was up to the challenge this next stage would bring. Since we are approaching the start date for school, I would like to offer my four best resolutions for your ‘new year’ as a parent and encourage you to use them to create your own.

1) This year I will commit to spending as much time as possible ‘being’ with my children.

While we all benefit from the gift of entertainment and the connection of the internet, you need to give your children the gift of your undivided attention. Be in the moment with them. Toddlers do something we call parallel play when they are active in the same room but immersed in their own activity. Often they do not acknowledge the other’s presence. This is because they have not yet developed ‘social skills’. In the electronic age, we often revert to this early stage and forget to relate to others around us. You can increase time interacting as a family by having a time each day that TV, computers, and electronic games are quiet. Tell jokes, stories, take a walk, star gaze, build something, play an instrument or sing together. Have a family meeting and decide together what new activities you can plan that are signal free.

2) This year I will allow my children to make mistakes and take risks without rescuing them.

It is hard to not want to be a ‘helicopter parent’. Yet no one ever really claims that title. It is just that we love our children and want to protect them from the pain of life. While this is important to do in some situations, doing it all the time means that they are not developing resilience, learning how to work through frustration and creating new survival skills. Let your children fall down, miss a play in sports, have a problem with a friend, get a low grade in a class and question authority respectfully. Involve them in activities that take practice to master. Try some new experiences yourself so you can model that life is about learning.

3) This year I will be more authentic with my family. I will share more of my history and present challenges.

Often we are so afraid to worry our children, we share very little of ourselves with them. For example, telling a specific story about your own problems making friends as a child is a great way to encourage your child to share that they are being bullied. While it is inappropriate to talk about specifics of financial or marital problems, that does not mean we don’t talk about the realities of our life. In order to prepare our growing children for life as an adult, we need to let them in on the challenges we face. So open up with more specifics about how you deal with a too talkative co-worker, a boss who is confusing, or your insecurity about how to ask for a pay raise. Admitting the hurdles in your life outside the family will let your child know that mastery of your environment is a work in progress for everyone.

4) I will find ways each day to appropriately physically touch my children.

It is a challenge as kids grow up to stay in physical contact. We know that babies will die without human touch.

I think that spirits die of loneliness, feeling unlovable and a hunger for touch. So add hugs, kisses, handshakes or high fives to your daily contact with your children. You can make it part of a daily ritual, like never saying goodbye without a hug. Touch can be asked for or given, but should never be withheld as punishment.

You can use these resolutions as a starting point to create your own. Have a family meeting, review what did and did not work last school year. Create achievable long and short term goals that will support everyone’s commitment to making your family’s new school year the best possible. And remember to end the meeting with a great big group hug!

The 27th Annual

Chico Parade of Lights

n Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at 7:30pm, the Chico Parade of Lights will be holding its annual night time parade in the beautiful Downtown Chico. This year marks the 27th Anniversary of the Chico Parade of Lights! The Parade’s history actually dates back to 1918 when high school seniors were invited to view the Chico Normal School campus. Special displays were built to depict the heritage of the campus within the community.

Over the years, more activities were added. Members of the faculty and townspeople would dress up in western attire and join the students in celebrating our past. These activities would culminate in a Pioneer Days parade through downtown Chico.

I

n 1988, the Pioneer Days parade was cancelled. In 1989, Beverly Crosby and Sue Johnston were asked by the then Mayor of Chico to continue the parade tradition. Thus began the Chico Parade of Lights 27 years ago.

his year’s theme, “Wonders of the Wild,” has endless possibilities for creativity, originality and lights!

Entries can include animals and plants; different environments (e.g. mountains, ocean, jungle, etc); camping, hiking and canoeing in nature; and anything related to the wonderment of the natural and beautiful world all around us! As

always, lights are the #1 focus! You can never have enough lights!

Fun Food For Fall Pumpkin Seeds 3 Ways Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Ingredients

1 cup of fresh pumpkin seeds 2 teaspoons olive oil ¼ teaspoon salt

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and spread on to a greased baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until seeds are lightly browned, stirring occasionally.

Spicy Pumpkin Seeds Ingredients

*Please use caution might be too hot for little ones 1 cup fresh pumpkin seeds 2 teaspoons hot sauce ½ teaspoon chili powder ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon cumin 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1/8 teaspoon sugar

Directions

In a small bowl mix the pumpkin seeds with the hot sauce. Combine remaining ingredients, sprinkle on pumpkin seeds and toss to coat.

Spread onto a greased baking sheet and bake at 250 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until seeds are lightly browned and dry, stirring occasionally.

Sweet Glazed Pumpkin Seeds Ingredients

1 cup fresh pumpkin seeds ¼ cup packed brown sugar ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice ¼ teaspoon salt

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and spread on to a greased baking sheet. Bake at 250 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until seeds are lightly browned, stirring occasionally.

Easy Caramel Apples Caramel apples are a classic fall treat! Personalize yours with nuts, chopped candy, crushed cookies or graham crackers, sprinkles, dried fruit, flaky sea salt or drizzle with melted white or dark chocolate.

Ingredients 6 medium apples 6 wooden sticks 1 (14 oz.) Package of caramel candies, unwrapped 2 Tbsp. Water Additional toppings of your choice, if desired Directions Wash and completely dry apples. Insert wooden stick into each apple, then place on a wax lined baking sheet and chill.

Microwave method: Microwave the caramels and water in a large microwaveable bowl on high for about 3 minutes. Cook until caramels are completely melted, stopping at 1 minute intervals to stir mixture.

Slow Cooker Method: (This method takes longer, but is convenient if you would like to keep it warm for an extended period of time or if you are doing it for a party activity.) Place caramels and water in a large heat safe bowl that will fit inside your slow cooker. Place bowl in the slow cooker and add hot water to the slow cooker, filling the area outside of the glass bowl until the water level is even with the caramels in the bowl. Place lid on slow cooker and cook on high for about 1 ½ - 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Once the caramel is completely melted, turn slow cooker to warm. If caramel thickens as it sits, you may stir in more water as needed, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Dip each apple into the hot caramel mixture and swirl apple around so that the sauce completely coats the apple. Quickly add extra topping if you desire while the caramel is still warm, then place apple on baking sheet to cool.
