t’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner and the start of a new year is almost here. Next year, we are celebrating our 15th year in business and we couldn’t be more excited. Whether you are a new reader or one of our longtime loyal readers, all of us at Growing Up Chico would like to send out a heartfelt thank you for the support. I hope you continue to read our magazine and see what we have in store for you!

At Growing Up Chico, we hope to help you celebrate this season and make it special for you and your family. We have provided an extensive list of upcoming events in our calendar section. We have a Shop Local guide that can help you get a jump start on your holiday shopping. We are all about supporting our local businesses, and by supporting small businesses, you are helping our local economy and also creating a sense of community. In this issue, we are excited to share with you an informational article on childbirth classes, tips on how to take photos of your kids during the holidays, and ways to help you handle difficult family members. Teaching Kids About Kindness: Small Gestures Put Smiles on People’s Faces “Do you know a student who’s bullied or always left out?

Is there a dog in your neighborhood that never gets to go for walks?”

Amid our busy lives, it is easy to lose sight of the little things we can do to make the world a gentler, kinder place for others. As a result, our kids miss out on golden opportunities to emulate such kindness and its rewards. November 13th, 2018, is World Kindness Day. So why not set a goal with your kids and see how many acts of kindness your family can rack up in a single day?

Here are some ideas to get your kids started: Call your grandparents or greatgrandparents: This is a big one because often, grandparents are the ones to initiate calls. So, make your grandparents’ day by making the call.

Visit an elderly neighbor: Many older people are shut in because they can no longer drive. Even those who do drive often do not get the social interaction they need.

There is likely someone in your neighborhood who could use some company.

Offer a compliment: It could not get any easier than this, but do not offer a praise you don’t mean because it will come off as disingenuous. Think about what you like about what the person is wearing, their personality, or something they have done.

Make a donation: This could be a small monetary donation to a good cause, or you could donate items you no longer need to a homeless shelter, animal rescue, or Toys for Tots collection.

Help someone with their homework: Do you know classmates who struggle with a particular subject? Offer to help them study for a test or to understand a concept for a homework assignment.

Take an extra lunch to school for someone who forgets theirs: When you get to school, ask your teacher to help you find a student who needs it.

Stand up for someone: Do you know a student who is bullied or always left out?

Look for an opportunity to tell those who are being judgmental that they should be a little nicer or that they are being unfair.

Offer someone your support: Do you know someone who is going through a hard time, such as a serious illness, or whose parents are going through a divorce? Lend them your shoulder, and offer to listen.

Make friends with someone who seems left out: Is there a classmate who is always standing alone on the playground or who sits

alone at lunch? Offer to join that person.

Offer to help out a mom: Do you know someone with young children? Offer to spend a couple of hours watching and entertaining them while the mom catches up on chores.

Help someone with their yard work: Do you know someone who is handicapped or elderly? Offer to mow, rake, pull weeds, or shovel snow.

Bake cookies for your teacher or boss: Show your appreciation by baking their favorite cookies or some brownies.

Hold the door for someone: This is another super easy gesture that is sure to be appreciated by the elderly and disabled, or really anyone.

Write an apology to someone you have hurt: We have all said and done things, on occasion, that hurt someone’s feelings. Take ownership of it, and write a heartfelt apology.

Help someone carry something: When you see someone trying to juggle multiple things or carry a heavy object, offer your assistance.

Post something nice on the social media page of someone who needs a friend: Do you have a social media friend who no one ever pays attention to? Make that person’s day with a positive comment on their page.

Take a neighbor’s dog for a walk: Is there a dog in your neighborhood that never gets to go for walks? Just make sure you find out the dog’s energy level to make sure you are able to handle it or to ensure you do not over exercise the dog.

Do a chore for your brother or sister: What a great way to get back in your brother’s, or sister’s, good graces. Who Knows? Maybe sometime they will return the favor.

Buy a friend a candy bar: This is a simple way to show your friend you are thinking of them.

Volunteer for a good cause: There are many opportunities right in your community. You could volunteer at a soup kitchen, by picking up trash at a park, or helping with a canned food drive.

Local Dancers Celebrate the Holiday Season in Two Productions By: Gabriela Prado

There is a special time of year when the weather gets colder, the days get shorter, and family time becomes more abundant.

This special time, known as the Holidays, spans from late November through January. The Holidays are a magical time, especially in our close knit Chico community. Every year the community comes together to celebrate the holidays with events such as the Christmas Preview and the Community Christmas Tree lighting.

mesmerizing costumes, enchanting scenery, and of course the beloved characters: Cinderella’s mice friends, the handsome prince, and her wicked step sisters and mother. In its fifth appearance in Laxson auditorium since 1989, 37 Chico Community Ballet company members ages 7 to 20 years old, accompanied by additional guest dancers, and additional community actors will dance to the glorious music of Sergei Prokofiev to reenact this tale enjoyed by all generations.

This year, Chico Performances is proudly hosting several ways to celebrate the arts and to ring in the holidays with your family.

Join local youth dancers as they perform in two shows this holiday season, Cinderella- A Magical Ballet and Believe- Inspired by the Polar Express.

For this year’s production, the costumes are being designed to make Cinderella’s fairytale feel fresh and new. The three acts throughout the ballet will be full of sparkle shimmering from the striking costumes adorning the dancers. From the costume collections of Chico State and Chico Community Ballet, costume designers Julie Gonzales and Andi Mathers who will help bring Cinderella and her friends to breath-taking life on stage.

Chico Performances and Chico Community Ballet are featuring more than 60 local dancers in their upcoming production of Cinderella- A Magical Ballet.

Cinderella- A Magical is a classical ballet performance based on the popular and well loved children’s fairy tale.

This production will feature all the wondrous elements from Cinderella’s well-known fable including talented dancers,

CCB company member and guest performer for CCB for the past 19 years. Watch Cameryn and the rest of the hard working dancers perform in Cinderella- A Magical Ballet in Laxson Auditorium on November 17, 24, and 25.

After each of the matinees on November 17, 24, and 25, the dancers will host a meet and greet with audience members.

Believe is an original production that was created by the brother and sister team of Jeff and Sarah Schneeweis in 2013. Believe features over 105 young local dancers ages 4 to 25. Believe was inspired by the movie and book, The Polar Express, and tells this classic Christmas story through several different dance scenes.

“I love Cinderella… It’s a great family ballet. It’s comical and it’s magical,” said Deborah Jorritsma, the Artistic Director.

When asked what makes her show so special, creator Sarah Schneeweis said, “The show has so much variety in music and types of dance, so it’s always delivering the unexpected and keeps the audience engaged. But the best part about the show…it takes a heart-warming story and brings the magic of the holidays to everyone’s heart! It’s such a fun show to see at Christmas!”

The leading role of Cinderella will be played by Cameryn Titus.

Cameryn is reprising her role as Cinderella. She has performed as

Believe’s dance production features contemporary and modern dance. The dancers in Believe range from advanced

dancers to beginners, with all the levels in between.

In previous years, Believe had sold out performances at Pleasant Valley’s Performing Arts Center.

Due to demand for tickets, this production has moved to Laxson Auditorium this year for four performances and two field trips.

Believe will be performed in Laxson Auditorium on December 7, 8, and 9.

In an interview, Sarah stated, “This year the dancers are thrilled to perform at the Laxson stage for so many people! We are busy adding scenes and creating new exciting moments in our show, and they’re really looking forward to share this with so many people in our community.”

Believe and Cinderella will also be featured as a part of the Chico Performances Field Trip Series for local school children.

At Chico Performances, we love bringing the arts to the Chico community, but even more than that, we love getting a chance to showcase local talent. y paternal grandmother died young, at age 49; within a year of her death, my grandfather had remarried the woman who would become my grandma. Even though her kisses smelled like cigarette smoke, I adored her. As a little girl, I did not know that she did not get along well with her adult stepchildren, my father and uncle.

My parents were very conscious about how they managed conflict in our family, and I learned a lot from that. I do remember some rather tense family gatherings; my parents did not hide their conflict with my grandma as much as they encouraged good behavior around her.

Is there someone in your family who stirs conflict?

Below are five tactics for dealing with difficult people.

You can teach them to your children, and model them yourself.

When you feel yourself starting to get irritated by someone, slow and deepen your breathing significantly.

Taking several long, slow exhales can measurably lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

If you can, duck out of the situation so you can be alone for a moment. You may even consider making a “sh sh sh sshhhh” sound as you exhale, as though you are soothing a baby. This triggers the same muscles that you would use when laughing. UCLA’s Marc Schoen has shown this to be extremely effective at keeping us calm, even when we are uncomfortable. The idea is to prevent our fight-or-flight response, which can make us aggressive and can make it very hard for us to be skillful in a challenging situation.

This is a strangely effective strategy. When we accept a person we find challenging, we let go of the resistance

that creates stress and tension. There is a lot of truth to the adage, “What we resist, persists.”

Look at the person in question with kindness and compassion. Say to yourself, for example, “I see you, and I see that you are angry and insecure. I accept that you are anxious and scared, even if I do not understand why. I accept that you are making all of us anxious, too. I accept that your trouble has become my trouble for the time being.”

Practicing this sort of acceptance is about dropping the fantasy of how we think things ought to be. You might have a fantasy of a sweet, close relationship with an in-law, for instance, and so you feel angry and disappointed every time he or she does not live up to this ideal. Be aware that your in-law no doubt feels your disappointment, and feels judged. It might seem to that person like you are trying to “fix” him or her, and it is hurtful. This is not a good way for you to improve that relationship.

This is excellent practice for, well, enlightenment. It is so hard, and our ego hates this practice more than anything, but when we let go of our need to be right, we deepen our acceptance of a situation and we engender peace in spite of any differences.

Rather than simply listening to a family member so that you are able to counter what that person says, try to listen for the sake of understanding. Where is he or she is coming from? This does not mean you need to agree, just that you are showing that person a basic level of respect. Research suggests engaging with a person this way – acknowledging the other’s point of view without judging it – can make that person feel more understood.

As a result, he or she may be less defensive or difficult.

Rather than interrupting with counter-arguments, try to paraphrase back the points you think a person is making, and acknowledge the emotions he or she seems to be expressing.

This is a critical skill that many people – women especially – tend to feel guilty about. If this is you, repeat after me: “It is not selfish to take care of myself.” If you become weak or volatile from lack of self-care, you are all but useless to others.

For starters, get enough rest. It is harder to regulate your emotions when you are tired. In addition, do not skip meals. Research shows that keeping your blood sugar stable will make you less aggressive if you get angry.

Finally, always remember to take a moment to leave the room, if possible, and breathe deeply if you find yourself in a particularly difficult situation.

Sometimes it seems like a difficult person’s job is to provoke and incite. Family members know you and know how to push your buttons. Instead of engaging, see jabs and barbs as a cry for attention and connection. For a lot of people, conflict is born from an unfulfilled desire to feel useful. They want to feel a part of something larger than themselves.

Start by giving the difficult person a way to focus on something besides him/her in order to feel connected and useful. If you are having a meal with a difficult family member, you might ask that person to help your kids set the table. When you ask someone for help, provide a rationale for why that person might do you the favor. One decades-old study that is still relevant today, found that the word “because” tends to trigger compliance. For instance, you might whisper to your mother-in-law, “It would be great if you could show the kids how to set the table, because they need a little guidance today.”

We are all just looking for love, connection, and friendship. One of the most wonderful lessons we can teach our children is that the greatest gift we can give ourselves is to accept a difficult person fully, and with love.

3 Resolutions to Make You Happier

I do understand why people don’t like New Year’s resolutions: they can be a source of failure, year after year. Folks often pick resolutions that are inherently unrewarding, that necessitate relentless hard work, or that remind them of their mortality in a way that makes them feel small instead of grateful.

This year, make the right resolution. Make the wrong one and you won’t keep it; you will just add another habit to the “fail” list. This year, pick just one resolution that research shows will make you happier. Here are three of my favorites: 1. Spend more time with friends. Study after study shows that we tend to be happier when we feel connected to our nearest and dearest, when we feel like we are a part of a group or a clan. Even introverts don’t like to feel

lonely. This may seem like the science of the blazingly obvious, but it bears repeating. Do you frequently feel isolated or lonely?

Make a resolution to routinely reach out to others.

2. Every day, find a way to give something to somebody. My favorite happiness booster is to give thanks: to a higher power for the abundance that surrounds me; to my dad for taking my kids to ice cream; to my husband for all the ways he makes me giggle. Equally good is to give something else—a helping hand, a compliment, a much needed $5 bill— even if it is just a tiny act of kindness. In a world that is more focused on getting than giving, a New Year’s resolution to do one kind thing each day is a pretty radical act. When we make giving a habit, we make gratitude

and kindness central themes in our lives. In so doing, we transform our lives with joy.

3. Get more sleep. The science around this is clear: You’ll be less stressed, less sick, and less grouchy in the New Year if you get more shuteye. Try increasing your sleep 10 minutes a night for a week, and then another 10 the next week, and so on until you are regularly getting your eight hours.

It is miraculous to me that people can change themselves simply because they want to.

New Year’s resolutions are an amazing act of creation, an art form where the canvas is the self.

Cinnamon Ornaments These non-edible cinnamon ornaments are fun, easy to make with kids, and will make your house smell amazingjust in time for the holidays.

Ingredients: 1 cup ground cinnamon 3/4 cup applesauce 4 tablespoons glue Mix together cinnamon, applesauce, and glue in a medium bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed. If the mixture is too wet, add more cinnamon and if it is too dry, add more applesauce.

Lightly dust surface with cinnamon. Cut ball of dough in

half and roll out each half until it is 1/3-1/4 inch thick.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes.

With a skewer or toothpick make a hole at the top for hanging with ribbon or twine.

Place ornaments on cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees F for 2-2 1/2 hours. Place them on a wire rack to cool.

Once dry the ornaments are ready to decorate with paint, glitter or simply decorate with a festive ribbon or twine.

How to Raise a Kid with a Conscience in the Digital Age Nudge kids to be their best selves by encouraging them to consume positive, inspiring media and online content.

very parent wants to raise a kid with a conscience— someone who will do the right thing even when no one is watching. But, when the road to online integrity is riddled with cyberbullying, cell phone cheating, sexting, and other risks, trusting your kid to be conscientious feels like a leap of faith.

Here’s the good news: Studies show that kids actually have a strong grasp of right and wrong as early as the toddler years, and parents have a huge influence on what kids learn about how to behave. The parenting you have been doing— role-modeling, keeping the lines of communication open, and finding ways to instill the kinds of character traits you value—is an excellent foundation for raising a kid with a conscience, both online and off. You can make even more of an impact using the media and technology that your kid loves, such as YouTube, Netflix, Snapchat, and Instagram, to model positive behavior and good judgment.

It’s safe to say that there is nowhere more challenging for our kids to make good choices than in their online lives. The thing is, many kids get their first phones and other devices at a point in their lives when common adolescent stressors, such as peer approval and separation from parents, play a

huge role in their decision-making process. Their ability to feel empathy, have integrity, and use their best judgment— especially in anonymous digital environments that feel consequence-free—is still a little wobbly.

That is actually OK. To have a conscience, kids need to experience—and learn from—the natural dips and valleys that happen along the way to becoming the person they (and you) ultimately want them to be. Yes, online mishaps are real and can be risky, but showing forgiveness, helping kids bounce back, and working through ways to do better next time is the best way to ensure your voice will be in their heads to guide them even when you are not there.

Once kids enter the tween and teen years, outside influences, including their peers and their media begin to shape their sense of right and wrong. Movies, TV shows, and social media can all be more effective in guiding kids toward making more choices that are positive and productive than ones that reflect poorly on them, make them feel not-great about themselves, or actually get them into trouble. Tweens and teens enjoy wrestling with complex ideas and discussing ethical behavior. Here are some ideas to help them develop these abilities:

Showcase character-rich movies and TV shows. On your next family movie night, choose a film or TV series that promotes the “soft skills,” such as empathy, gratitude, and integrity. After the show, talk about what traits you value and how your family can focus on, and strengthen them in your daily lives. Consider having a “character day” where everyone practices a skill such as gratitude. This helps kids see how they make right-vs.-wrong decisions even in their everyday interactions.

Share uplifting, inspirational viral videos, memes, and quotes. Yucky stuff tends to crowd out the good stuff in our social media. But, there are a lot of soul-nourishing images and ideas out there if you look for them and reflect on them as a family. Follow feeds from Upworthy, Mental Floss, and even the kid-authored, Scholastic Kids Press Corps, to see stories that are hopeful and age-appropriate and that restore faith in the world. When kids see positivity in action, they are more likely to pay it forward.

Ask about our kids’ online experiences. Tweens and teens see the good, bad, and ugly when they text, use social media, or visit comment-rich sites such as YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit. Ask your kids about the online behavior they witness, how they feel about it, and whether negative comments influence them to behave a certain way—good or bad. Talk about choices they make in both their “real” lives and online.

Ask questions such as, “What would you do if a friend were being cyberbullied?,” “If you felt someone dissed you online,

would you respond?,” and “What was the nicest text you ever got?” to get kids to think about the responsibility we have to others in digital environments.

Emphasize good sportsmanship. Many kids really look up to athletes and want to act like them. If your family enjoys watching sports, the Olympics, or other athletic competitions, call it out when players, opponents, and teams treat each other with respect on—and off—the field. Though games feature plenty of aggressive behavior, there are always those sports stars whose fellowship shines through. Ask your kids about players they admire for their sportsmanship and why.

Seek out positive media role models. While you might be familiar with popular stars such as Taylor Swift and Chris Pratt, kids avidly follow “internet famous” folks on YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Musical.ly. Web celebs are hugely influential, so ask your kids whom they follow (and on which social media platforms), and talk about the stuff they post. Set up Google Alerts or follow some of their favorites so you can pepper your conversations with questions or observations from their world. Steer your kids toward positive role models on YouTube and compare feeds from various stars. Ask, “Have you ever seen anything inappropriate from an Instagrammer?,” “What do you think is OK to post and what should remain private?,” and “Who has the best Snapchat feed, and why?” Communication will be the key in helping your child develop a conscience in this ever-changing, digital world.

Consider Childbirth Education

here is much to prepare for when expecting a child, especially if it’s the first.

Mothers and couples that are pregnant for the first time have entered into a phase of life with new and important choices ahead of them. Childbirth education classes can be a significant part of the preparation process for a new family. Classes can help mothers and couples to be informed about the labor, birth, the postpartum period, breastfeeding, and care of the newborn. A goal of childbirth education classes is to inform and prepare mothers (and their support person) mentally, physically, and emotionally by teaching the topics mentioned above. Another goal is to bestow a sense of empowerment to a birthing woman and her support person.

This knowledge base and empowerment enables pregnant women to collaborate with their care providers on decisions regarding her and her baby’s health. It also allows the mother to confidently cocreate a supportive birthing environment where her needs and her baby’s are met, nurtured and respected by her care provider, as well as the nursing staff if

the delivery is in the hospital. A sense of empowerment and participation can increase confidence as people transform into their new roles as parents.

C

hildbirth education classes can be found in most cities in our area; they are either private, communitybased, or hospital-based. Class series are often 1 class per week for 5-7 weeks, usually lasting 2 hours. Condensed classes are available ranging from 1-2 days or less, depending on who is offering the class. Women and couples can sign up for classes in advance during the second trimester, but it is ideal to start attending classes around 28-30 weeks gestation.

We are fortunate in our area to have a wealth of options easily found online or by asking your health care provider. Some of the private classes offered are taught by doulas, birth educators, and licensed midwives. Information on private classes can be found online and on Facebook.

Classes are also offered at Enloe, Feather River, and Oroville hospitals. Go to their websites for more information. Better Babies and Healthy Mothers offer classes in childbirth education as well.

hildbirth education class structure may consist of lectures with slide presentations, group discussions, birth art or labor and birthing techniques, and position exercises. Some of the topics covered may be stages of labor, labor support, power and purpose of hormones, relaxation techniques, coping skills for natural birth, overview of immediate postpartum, and the fourth trimester, including breastfeeding and newborn care. Some ideas to consider when choosing a class are: class size, training and experience of the instructor, whether informational handouts are provided, and cost. When new mothers and couples have an idea of what they want out of a class, it is easier to find one that meets their needs.

Speaking with a person directly regarding the topics and structure of the class might help answer specific questions not found online.

I

t may be a bit overwhelming to find the time to attend a class for 2 hours every week for 5-7 weeks with a busy work or school schedule. Changing one’s focus to the advantages of childbirth education may lessen the stress while figuring out

how to fit a class in each week. Some new mothers and couples find it to be an added bonus to have a committed time to connect with their baby, or each other (if there is an involved partner) while learning new skills and techniques that will enhance the birthing experience.

hildbirth classes can also offer new opportunities to create community and lasting friendships with other moms and couples that are attending the same class. Classes can also assist in learning new evidence-based birth practices and local hospital policies. They can also give new mothers and couples techniques and coping skills to integrate or reduce the pain associated with labor and birth, as well as learning that being flexible and having realistic expectations are part of the birthing process. There is so much to research and discover regarding pregnancy and childbirth that it can be helpful to have some of it presented in a formal setting instead of sitting in front of the computer for hours searching. Some of that time can be used to take a brisk walk, soak up some vitamin D, or to take a much needed nap!

ore recently, women and families have become interested in educating themselves concerning their childbirth experience.

The research conducted in regard to childbirth education and the effects on birth outcomes demonstrates the positive benefits of childbirth education. Some of the emotional and physical benefits that have been shown are: • Increased confidence for labor and birth • Improved communication between childbearing women and their care providers • Decreased need for pain medication in labor • Increase in satisfaction with birth • Higher likelihood of breastfeeding This is according to a study by Stroll, K and Hall (2012) from “Childbirth Education and Obstetric Interventions Among Low-Risk Canadian Women: Is There a Connection?” from The Journal of Perinatal Education: A Lamaze International Publication. hildbirth education classes give parents an overview of what to expect from labor and birth, local hospital procedures, evidence-based practices, different techniques, and coping skills for a natural birth. More importantly, no matter what childbirth method or technique is taught, being well-prepared for labor and birth can promote a feeling of pride, confidence, and empowerment however it may unfold. Consider signing up for childbirth education classes and start this new phase of your life (lives) informed and equipped.

Recipes: Not Just for Holiday Baking!

Focus on Photos (and on Life)

ver had that experience of finding an amazing looking recipe on Pinterest or Facebook, only to have the reality fall short of your expectations? So often, that is our experience with taking photographs as well. Maybe you went to make an awesome slow cooker soup, and it turned into a burnedon mess? Maybe you see beautiful moments with your family, especially around the holidays, but the resulting images are seriously not Instagram-worthy.

Just like with cooking, there is a recipe that goes into great photographs! The principals below can be applied to both camera-based photography, as well as phone-photography.

Here are some helpful tips to get great photographs of your family, during the holiday season and beyond…

1. Intention! Unless you are a world-class chef, most people cannot start cooking without figuring out what they are making first.

Whether you are gathering groceries from the store, or pulling stuff out of your pantry and fridge, you have to have at least a loose plan of what you are hoping to create. The same goes for your photos, especially around the holidays.

We tend to have very specific ideas about the images we want to have to remember the season. Don’t be afraid to set yourself up for success. Want images of your kids sitting around the Christmas tree, wrapped up in holiday lights or opening gifts? Don’t wait until Christmas Eve! Set your scene, test your settings, and put the family in their holiday jammies on a low-key evening, and shoot away. You, as well as your family, will be more relaxed and you won’t be fighting with grouchy, tired, over-sugared kids!

2. Light! Perhaps the MOST important ingredient when taking photographs is light.

Too much light? You lose detail and your images will be washed out and over exposed.

Too little light? Your images will be flat, dull and dark.

When you are setting up to take photographs, take a few minutes to look for the light. Do you have amazing windows with great natural light? Do you need to shift things around to get better light? Do you need to adjust your settings to account for low light, or move to a

different spot in the yard to avoid harsh direct sun? Generally, you will want to face your subjects towards the light, to cast that beautiful golden glow on their faces.

3. Tell a story, and don’t forget the details!

What are you trying to remember with your images? A collage of images from your kiddo’s birthday party should look very different from the posed family shots from your cousin’s wedding.

Sometimes, it is the little details that we want to remember. Don’t be afraid to take photographs of your child, but also zoom in on their hands digging into the dough making Chanukah treats. Is your kid obsessed with a particular Christmas decoration? Make that the focus of your image, with your child in the foreground or background.

4. Perspective! We all have a million photos of our kids standing straight on and posing for the camera. What can you do to change your perspective? How does the image change if you get above your child while they are coloring or working on a holiday project?

What about if you get eye level with the table and shoot them straight on? What about if you get on the ground and let them jump above you? Changing your perspective will add texture and interest to your images.

5. Have fun! The holidays are a time of great joy! There is nothing that will have your kids running and hiding from you faster than a stressed out parent who is insisting on forcing that perfectly posed image.

Make taking pictures fun! Set up a play situation for your child, so they are more engrossed in playing than posing. Set up a play fort! Let them jump on the bed (safely)!

Let them throw snow at their sibling! This will result in more natural smiles, and spontaneously joyful images.

Last, but not least, don’t be afraid to put the camera away! Often we get so engrossed in capturing the perfect image that we become buried in the camera instead of focusing on the most important thing – the moments happening around you! Don’t be afraid to put your “big camera” away, and snap a few images with your phone camera. Be present in the moment, and we wish you the happiest of holidays!

Fall Wild Blend Salad 1 cup Lundberg Family Farms Organic Wild Blend Rice 1 orange, zested, peeled and diced 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. maple syrup 3 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup dried sweetened cranberries 1/3 cup toasted almond slices 1/3 cup goat cheese, crumbled 2 cups kale, coarsely chopped Salt and pepper to taste Prepare wild blend rice according to package directions.

Chewy Granola Bars

While rice is cooking, combine orange zest, Dijon mustard, maple syrup, and vinegar in a medium size salad bowl. Add olive oil, salt and pepper, mix thoroughly. Add cooked rice, diced orange, cranberries, almonds, goat cheese, and kale to salad bowl. Toss to combine and season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

1 ½ cups raw almonds ¼ cup sesame seeds 1 ½ cups oats, quick-cooking ½ cup dried cranberries 1 cup dried blueberries (or a mix of other dried fruit) 1/3 cup Lundberg® Sweet Dreams® Brown Rice Syrup

1/3 cup maple syrup 1 tsp cinnamon Heat the oven to 275*F. Lightly grease a 9-inch or 7 x 11-inch baking pan with oil. Grind the almonds in a food processor until they resemble a coarse meal. Combine the ground almonds and the remaining ingredients in a large bowl and stir well. Using wet fingers press the mixture into the prepared pan and bake it for 1 hour. Allow the bars to cool thoroughly while they are still in the pan before cutting.

Quinoa Tots with Spicy BBQ Sauce 1 cup Lundberg Family Farm Antique White Quinoa 2½ cup low sodium vegetable broth ½ tsp. onion powder ½ tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. pepper Sauce ingredients: 3 tablespoon maple syrup 1 ½ tablespoon tomato paste 2 teaspoon rice vinegar 1 teaspoons dijon mustard 1 teaspoon tamari 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon sea salt ¼ teaspoon of sambal Thoroughly rinse and drain quinoa, in a fine mesh sieve, under running cold water until water runs clear. Place quinoa in a medium saucepan with broth and bring to a fast simmer.

Cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce heat to maintain a low simmer and cook for 30 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes until safe to handle.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees and lightly oil a baking sheet. Take slightly more than a teaspoon sized amount of mixture and roll and shape with hands to form tots. Place tots on baking sheet, and lightly spray with cooking oil. Bake for about 25 minutes or until browned and crispy outside.

White tots are baking, combine all sauce ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Serve hot with dipping sauce.
