o much has happened since our Winter Issue hit the stands; I do not know where to start. One thing I do know is that I am amazed by the community’s strength and how it has come together like never before. We are overjoyed to feature Sheriff Kory Honea and Fire Chief David Hawks on our cover this quarter. All of us at Growing Up Chico would like to send out a tremendous thank you to all of the first responders. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the Camp Fire.

As we start off the new year and head into spring, we have a lot of fun things to share with you. For one, we are putting on a Baby & Family Expo on February 9th at the Chico Mall from 11-4pm. I really hope you will join us. There will be vendor booths, children’s activities, resources for parents, and more!

I am also excited to share with you our annual Woman in Business section, which you will find on page 26. So many incredibly talented woman run business in the area and we are proud to feature them in this magazine.

In this issue, you will find information on several upcoming events, including: performances at Laxson, a new ballet; Coppélia, the Endangered Species Faire, and the Pioneer Day Parade. Gabriela Prado Gabriela is a senior at Chico State and is majoring in Public Relations.

She is the senior marketing assistant at Chico Performances, and has been there for a year and a half. She loves dogs, coffee, and her favorite season is winter. Her goal after college is to move to Seattle and to get a job in politics.

Natalie Carter Natalie is the Executive Director of Butte Environmental Council.

She earned her degree in General Biology from CSU, Chico. She is a mom and devoted advocate for our community and the environment.

Laxson Is Getting Wild This March

S

pring is just around the corner, and what better way to spring into the new year than with indulging and immersing yourself with nature? March is a wild month for Chico Performances.

They have two wild life experts coming to excite and inspire audiences about the wonderful world of nature and the beauty of the wildlife around us. In the beginning of the month, on March 6, Peter Gros will be bringing tales of danger in the wildlife, along with animal friends to the Laxson stage. On March 27, National Geographic videographer and show host, Filipe DeAndade, will be bringing his wildlife experience and passions to Laxson.

Peter Gros was a star on The Original Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. For more than 30 years, Gros has dedicated his life to spreading an appreciation for nature and a love of wildlife. He has a done a lot for the animal kingdom, such as creating a breeding program for endangered species, developimg a rehabilitation program for birds of prey, and creatimg the largest captive breeding colony or ostriches in the United States. He is a licensed lecturer and is dedicated to sharing his passions and inspiring young people to protect the planet and conserve it, so that wildlife can thrive.

Peter Gros will be coming to Laxson on March 6 at 7:30 p.m., accompanied by a few of his furry friends. A few fuzzy faces you can expect to see are: a kangaroo, lemurs, a honey bear, and many more. This performance will be hands on and engaging.

Filipe DeAndrade is a Brazilian native who moved to America to study film at the University of Florida.

As a college grad with a passion

for film and nature, he entered in a short film competition, “National Geographic’s Wild to Inspire.” He won this competition, and was invited by National Geographic’s Wild to work on several documentaries. He is now the host of National Geographic’s Wild Youtube show, titled Untamed. He has traveled all across America with his film crew in his refurbished ambulance (named “Florence the Manbulence”) to showcase amazing animals native to this country.

Join Filipe for a multimedia presentation full of wild crazy animals found all over the United States. He will be highlighting little known facts and interesting videography of sharks, dolphins, monkeys, spiders, and so much more in his quick, witty, and humorous delivery. Laxson will be getting Untamed on March 27 at 7:30 p.m. This is a night of fun and will leave you with a whole new appreciation for the wildlife that surrounds you.

At Chico Performances, we are dedicated to bringing the arts to our community. Through our lecture series, we hope to bring a new found appreciation to the world around us and to inspire others. Both Peter Gros and Filipe DeAndrade are a part of our Field Trip series as well. Through our Field Trips, we hope to inspire local children to make a difference and to fill them with an appreciation for the arts at a young age.

Jong Shin Do at Azad’s Martial Arts

K

ung fu means “to strive.” Hapkido means “the art of concentrating energy.” Karate means “empty hand.” At Azad’s Martial Arts in Chico, CA, students learn Jong Shin Do, a martial arts style that means, “the way of uniting mind, body, and spirit.” Founded by Grandmaster Azad, Jong Shin Do approaches martial arts as a physical tool for mental and spiritual growth. As a branch of Hapkido, Jong Shin Do provides a complete physical workout tailored to the needs of the student. For kids especially, Jong Shin Do teaches fundamental life skills that enrich home lives, school experiences, and students’ views of themselves and others. “We empower students, regardless of background or abilities,” says Grandmaster Azad.

“Jong Shin Do is for anybody with the desire to become stronger in any aspect of life.”

O

n a purely physical level, Azad’s students learn self-defense and get a full-body workout that develops strength, flexibility, coordination, and other abilities they can use throughout their lives. Jong Shin Do uses moves like kick-punching from Kung Fu, Karate, and kickboxing, as well as grappling techniques from wrestling and Jujitsu, strengthening muscles in the core, back, arms, and legs. Linda Patterson, whose daughter Iris has been an Azad’s student for four years, loves how the instructors “require respect from the students and also show respect to the students in return. They treat kids as individuals; they know Iris is going to learn differently than the child next to her.” Because they

know each child’s abilities, Azad’s instructors never settle for second best, urging and supporting kids to show genuine effort. Regular practice builds stamina and endurance. Azad’s creates the perfect opportunity for athletic kids who enjoy exercise, but feel intimidated by high-stakes rivalries. While “mainstream” sports place kids against each other in a competitive way, Azad’s focuses on personal progress. Since students often practice in pairs, they still gain valuable teamwork experience while receiving lessons uniquely tailored to meet age, learning styles, and physical capabilities. In a society increasingly faced with childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes, Azad’s trains kids to fight for their own health and fitness while having fun.

A

s kids strengthen their physical muscles through Jong Shin Do, they also strengthen their mental muscles. Azad’s lessons help kids concentrate, follow directions, and develop constructive thinking patterns in all areas of life. Linda has seen Iris’s “focus and attentiveness grow” since starting Jong Shin Do. “She is not just learning a form or a martial arts technique, she’s learning how to use [her skills] and in what situations to use them,” says Linda. Azad’s instructors clearly present their expectations, giving students structure and the responsibility to listen carefully and act accordingly. In this consistent, cause-and-effect-based environment, kids develop focus, discipline, and follow-through— attributes that naturally spill into their behavior at home and at school. Instructors offer specific encouragement and feedback, while also requiring kids to evaluate their

own strengths and growth areas. “With a positive mental attitude, they have everything it takes to succeed and to become better in their lives,” says Grandmaster Azad.

“The way they see things in the world will change their behavior and their achievement in school and at home.”

A

zad’s also shapes kids emotionally and spiritually, cultivating confidence, modesty, and mindfulness.

Instead of seeking fights, Azad’s students learn to control their emotions, de-escalate, and use non-violent conflict resolution techniques. To begin with, Jong Shin Do develops kids’ awareness of their internal environments— their feelings and responses to people and situations.

Students learn how to lower personal stress levels and manage their mindsets using Jong Shin Do’s specialized, age-appropriate calming exercises. For Azad’s students, physical aggression is the last resort because knowing they have the physical ability to defend themselves lays a foundation of confidence, giving kids the inner strength to stand up for themselves. Colton Burkett, a high school freshman, took Jong Shin Do to defend himself. He says he quickly learned that martial arts with Grandmaster Azad was about “more than defending myself. It’s about being a good person.” Since enrolling at Azad’s in May 2018, Colton has “changed leaps and bounds,” according to his mother, Alisha. “He wasn’t a bad kid before,” Alisha says, “but there were some behavior issues I couldn’t fix. His body has changed a lot, but he has also gained respect [for others] at home. He doesn’t fight when he is asked to do something and he has gained confidence. He wasn’t exactly afraid before, but he’s truly bold now.”

A

s a martial art that focuses on the connection between body, mind, and spirit, Jong Shin Do shows children how our choices never occur in a vacuum, but rather affect every part of our lives. Even the youngest students at Azad’s learn nine tenets that spill from martial arts into all areas of life: courtesy, integrity, self-control, indomitable spirit, courage, compassion, modesty, and victory. Sixyear-old Harrison Bamlet, who has only studied at Azad’s for a year, can already recite these virtues from memory, a testimony to how frequently his lessons focus on these attributes. Sabrina, Harrison’s mother, says she selected Azad’s from other martial arts schools because Azad’s was the only one “who really asked about Harrison.

They wanted to know about Harrison’s strengths and weaknesses, and what we wanted to get out of the lessons. We were looking for a place where Harrison could learn self-control, focus, and respect.” Azad’s proved the perfect answer.

O

ver 10,000 students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds have trained with Grandmaster Azad since 1985. As he reflects on Jong Shin Do’s impact over the decades, Grandmaster Azad says his system brings out the best in students, from developing physical strength and stamina to establishing self-confidence and respect for others. “We love to be part of that personal growth,” he says. Over the years, Grandmaster Azad has seen how confidence gives people the power to be kind. By building students’ confidence from the inside out, Jong Shin Do at Azad’s makes the world kinder, one student at a time.

The Boys & Girls Club: A Community of Support

F

or residents of Butte County, the morning of November 8th, 2018 will never be forgotten. It was one of absolute devastation for thousands of families. The Camp Fire raged through the Sierra Nevada foothills, and the town of Paradise was completely destroyed in a matter of hours. Yet—amidst the chaos and confusion of that fateful morning—our community also witnessed incredible acts of compassion and volunteerism; heroic efforts by first responders; and tireless round-the-clock support from non-profit organizations. One of those organizations that offered immediate and ongoing assistance to evacuees was the Boys and Girls Club here in Chico, which—in the weeks and months following the Camp Fire—has remained a solid rock of support and source of stability for hundreds of children who have been impacted.

O

f the thousands of Paradise and Magalia residents who fled the fire on the morning of November 8th, five hundred of those evacuees were members (ages 5 to 18) of the Boys and Girls Club. The town of Paradise, alone, was home to five Boys and Girls Club locations that provided positive, caring, and enriching afterschool care: a safe, fun, and stable environment for so many children in Butte County. Following the fire, however, the Boys and Girls Club in Chico became so much more than this: it became a refuge. Not only did the Club become the key support beam and informational super highway for hundreds of families, they were one of the only childcare organizations in

Butte and Glenn County to remain open (and extend their hours of operation) for parents who were now tackling the overwhelming emotional recovery process.

W

ith calmness and compassion, the Boys and Girls Club staff and volunteers immediately began assessing the needs of their families who had been displaced by the Camp Fire. In the days that followed, personal phone calls were made to each and every member of their Paradise Club locations to determine where they had been evacuated to; what their shelter and medical needs were; and if Club services were needed.

Without delay, the Boys and Girls Club in Chico and Oroville immediately expanded their services to full-day programming during the three week school closure; supplied three meals a day to children who came through their doors; offered necessities, such as clothing, as well as gift cards; provided professional crisis counseling and pet therapy; and provided sports, art activities, access to computers, and encouraging mentors. In total, 1,794 children in Butte and Glenn counties received care or services from the Boys and Girls Club Chico, Oroville, and Hamilton City locations. During the

weeks that school was closed due to the Camp Fire, the members of the Boys and Girls Club were able to “just be kids” and have a bit of normality and familiarity in their lives. Meanwhile, parents found comfort knowing their children were safe and cared for as they headed to disaster centers to tackle the daunting task of waiting in lines, completing insurance and assistance paperwork, and dealing with the overwhelming recovery process.

I

t has been several months now since the Camp Fire devastated an entire town and many neighboring communities. With all of the schools in Paradise either destroyed or heavily damaged, so too were the Boys and Girls Club locations. Yet, the staff and volunteers at the Chico and Oroville locations have remained focused on ensuring support for the families of their members—73% of which were already below the poverty line prior to the Camp Fire. With three additional sites now open in Durham, Oroville, and Magalia, as well as two expanded locations in Chico, it is clear and evident that the Boys and Girls Club is a vital and critical support system for so many families here in Chico.

The Endangered Species Faire 40 Years of Educating

The combination of art and science engages students, leaving a lasting impression about the importance of conservation and the natural world. Joining the classes, larger, awe inspiring puppets made by community groups can be seen scattered through the Procession. From tigers to tiger salamanders, the colorful puppets and smiling faces are a true Chico treasure to behold.

T

he Endangered Species Faire is one of the oldest and largest events in California that is dedicated to endangered species awareness. Since 1979, the Endangered Species Faire has been a public forum for local schools, government agencies, environmental organizations, and community groups, presenting and sharing information on ecology, wildlife and a host of environmental issues.

On Saturday, May 4th, 2019, Butte Environmental Council (BEC) will host the 40th Annual Endangered Species Faire with a full-day of exhibits, activities, and entertainment. Back at Cedar Grove, in the heart of Chico’s beloved Bidwell Park, the Faire will be bigger than ever, expanding to include the Chico Creek Nature Center and a second performance area.

Returning for the tenth year, the Procession of the Species will feature hundreds of students from local schools proudly parading puppets of endangered species through the Faire. In the months

back performers who have helped make the Faire an event to remember for four decades. There is even a reunion concert in the works the night before the Faire, bringing together musicians who have performed at the Faire throughout the years to celebrate its legacy.

New this year at the Bear’s Lair performance area, poems and stories will be shared throughout the day, focusing on themes of nature and conservation. At an all ages venue, artists will share their work and inspire their audiences to imagine a future in harmony with our environment.

Another performance at the Faire, not to be missed, is the Conservation Ambassadors live animal show: children and adults alike, gather every year for this show featuring rescued animals that is both educational and entertaining.

Over the decades, the Faire has gained regional recognition, with thousands of attendees coming from areas throughout

the North State. Everyone who attends has the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and appreciation for the natural world. This year’s theme, “Ecosystem Earth” celebrates the interconnectedness of all life on earth while also emphasizing the global scale of our current climate crisis. An educational experience since the beginning, Endangered Species Faire allows youth to explore environmentally themed activities at each organization’s booth and BEC’s famous eco-scavenger hunt will take them on a journey to discover more about our environment and learn about how they can make a difference.

The beautiful setting, enjoyable entertainment, wholesome food and educational experiences at the Faire have made it one of Chico’s favorite springtime traditions!

o much tragic loss, so many people’s lives upended, and way too many ended in the Camp Fire. Words cannot express our sorrow and commitment to help rebuild the fabric of our society. Hopefully, 2019 will be a much better year for everyone! The Camp Fire and its continuing and long-term impacts countywide have changed the focus of our entire county’s individuals, businesses, organizations, events, and activism- perhaps for years.

The California Nut Festival has cancelled their beloved community event for 2019, so that the community can focus on recovery and rebuilding. They made this decision so that they can devote their time and energy to help 4H and FFA students recover from the fire with donations, instead of supporting their

event. There are other events in our Greater Chico area that have been cancelled or curtailed for similar reasons.

I am the President of Celebration of People, Inc., which is the 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization that has been orchestrating the Spring Parade in Chico since 2001. This year’s Pioneer Day Parade and Community Festival is Saturday May 4, in Downtown Chico, celebrating John Bidwell’s 200th Birthday and the resilience of our communities. We intend to structure the event for groups working to address the impacts of the Camp Fire in raising funds and awareness for all of us to heal and move forward. To date, we have some very exciting plans in the making!

We have also reached out to the Chico and Paradise Chambers of Commerce, to offer to close 4th Street, between Main Street and Wall Street for the day, allowing them to do a joint event of their choice. Perhaps the event will bring people, businesses, and city leaders who have evacuated to places near and far, allowing them to come together for the day.

We are in conversations with the Gold Nugget Museum and Parade Committee and it is our hope that some of what is left of their parade can join us in Chico this year, or even several years, while they rebuild the infrastructure and human capital to return to Paradise as soon as possible, where we can then march in their parade. Speaking of rebuilding, we will be helping raise money to rebuild the Gold Nugget Museum, too, not just at the parade, but at other Chico events to help our neighbors in need.

We are working to make this parade one of the best and biggest parades in the one hundred plus years’ of spring parades in Chico. It is the pleasure of our Parade Committee to announce the Grand Marshal for the 2019 Pioneer Day Parade is Butte County’s Sheriff-Coroner, Kory Honea!

By our choice of Grand Marshal, we will shine a spotlight on all of our heroic first responders, police, firefighters , animal rescue, search and rescue, and others, as well as the thousands of supporters who stepped up in our time of need- even while some of them were losing homes, businesses, and perhaps loved ones of their own!

is Coming to Chico!

W

e are just guessing this means nothing to you.

Allow us to tell you why we think it should.

First, it is a ballet, and everyone, can and, should endorse the arts. (Supporting the arts is a great way to make Chico awesome!) Furthermore, it is a comic ballet, which means all the characters manage to survive until the curtain closes at the end, AND you might even get in a few laughs. There are no dying swans or star-crossed lovers in this modified, two-act extravaganza.

Second, it is entertaining. You will follow the ridiculous story of an eccentric dollmaker whose beautiful prized doll (Coppélia) gets mistaken as a living being, which nearly shipwrecks the engagement between the two main characters (Swanhilda and Franz). In spite of some major misunderstandings and mishaps, the story finishes with an ending that is sure to delight. Is this ballet for you?

Throw a tutu on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or Sixteen Candles, and bring it on.

Third, this ballet is a historical masterpiece. First performed in 1870 at the Théâtre Impérial de l´Opéra in Paris, Coppélia is one of the most frequently performed and well-loved comic ballets of all time. With music by Léo Delibes and original choreography by Arthur SaintLéon, it served as a precursor to the betterknown romantic classical era of ballet. It has a fun plot, great music, and splendid choreography. Sounds like a winner.

Finally, Coppélia is being produced by the International Institute for Education Through the Arts (IIETA), a local 501(c) (3) nonprofit that has existed in Chico for over 30 years. It will feature the talents of dancers from throughout the community, including students at North State Ballet, Chico Creek Dance Centre, and Northern California Ballet. Heather Wysong and Laurel Tennant of North State Ballet have been commissioned as the Artistic

Directors for this endeavor. This will be their second collaboration with IIETA, their first being the highly successful original ballet, Into the Wardrobe, in December of 2016 and 2017.

Grandpa’s Childhood in the 1950s

By Ben, Age 7 My Grandpa, Allen Dean Hildebrandt, entered into the world on October 18, 1947. Although his parents lived in Oregon, he was born just over the border in Vancouver, Washington. I enjoyed interviewing him and learning about his childhood.

When he was still young in age, his family moved to Norwalk, California. He attended Elmcroft Elementary School where his favorite subject was recess. But Allen was especially good at math. While he loved to read mysteries, he especially enjoyed stories about the American pioneer days. The clothes Grandpa wore were clean and starched. He always wore a button-up shirt and only shoes…no flip-flops.

Playing with Erector Sets was a fun hobby for him. He remembers holding onto his older brother, Vernon, to see if he could get out; he always escaped.

Sports was not his thing, but he did like to play with his Boxer, Sassy. Grandpa would throw a stick to the other side of the yard, and Sassy would chase it. They would do that over and over until Sassy’s tongue was dragging on the ground. Although he didn’t play any sports, Grandpa did play the trumpet when he was in Junior High, and he still loves music today.

Driving to Washington to visit his Grandpa and Grandma Longsinger’s farm to pick berries, such as blueberries and blackberries, was a fond memory.

Watering the electric fence to feel the shock was a fun thing for him to do. As much as he liked to water the fence, he still had chores to take care of such as making his bed and clearing and setting the table. When he could, he went to the quarter-mile drag strip where his dad raced a 1934 Roadster. Allen’s dad, my great-grandpa, raced from 1954 to 1962 and won over fifty trophies.

You might guess my grandpa’s favorite candies: chocolate and lemon drops. And this may sound strange, but he loved a large five cent dill pickle from the market.

Grandpa wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up, but that never happened. However, he did take pilot lessons and soloed in a Cessna 160 at age sixteen.

Like my life, Grandpa had a lot of adventures, some similar and some different. I never could have guessed that he wanted to become an astronaut when he grew up! It was interesting to hear what his life was like in the 1950s when he was my age.

Signs Your Smartphone is Controlling You and Your Family

At Core Connectivity, we believe that every individual possesses a spirit of power and love and sound mind essential to overcome the brain science used to distract us from experiencing love in the family. We encourage parents to set the example with this power that can never be taken, but is so easily surrendered to the bully, the drug, or the device. Put down the device and just be present with your child without judging and without an agenda, especially when they are frustrating you. Your frustration is a sign that there is something you need to learn about how your child’s life is informing them. Get interested in what interests your child and what breaks their heart.

s an educator and coach on parenting and family life, I have studied how the pedophiles and commercial interests engage techsavvy youth so they can exploit them. To that end, I teach caring adults how to engage youth to empower them and impart wisdom. In this feature, I address how not to give up your personal power to the device.

Some preliminary results from a major study conducted by the National Institutes of Health on the impact of screen time on young brains was recently featured in the news. The research reveals that developers use brain science in order to tap the reward systems of the brain associated with dopamine, which are short term “feel good� fixes that can alter the physical structure of the brain, like a drug.

And while there is a lot of anxiety over how mobile connectivity is impacting the young brains, studies have shown and conversations with young folks indicate that parents tend to be distracted and consumed by the devices. The critical concern for families is this: Do you realize whether you are using the device, or are you being used by the device?

So, I encourage parents to examine their own dependence on screens for daily life.

The following are a few signs that your device may be controlling your role in

family dynamics: 1. The smart phone is with you 24/7, and you respond to every notification, day or night.

2. [For parents] Your child keeps asking you to get off the device.

3. [For youth] Your parents keep asking you to put the device down.

4. You spend more time texting/emailing, rather than talking in person.

As you consider this list, remember that

Undivided attention with an open mind is this is how to establish a human connection so you can impart wisdom and offer guidance. This is how we can stimulate the part of the brain that secretes oxytocin, the authentic love hormone which makes human bonding possible. With this mindset of belonging through human connection, (i.e., experiencing and believing that you are loved unconditionally), it is then possible to engage yourself and your family in setting age-appropriate limits for the use of technology.

Indeed the power of parents as teachers for life is to lead by their own examples.

Raising Them Outdoors: Hike it Baby Comes to Butte County

t’s a beautiful 70 degrees outside, the sun is high, the birds are chirping, the sound of Big Chico Creek is in the distance, and just up ahead are the sounds of laughter.

Upper Bidwell Park is bustling with activity. People of all ages are enjoying the many trails and activities the park provides our community.

On one trail, there is a group full of families with young children. Some of these children are spotting local wildlife, others are wandering to the beat of their own drums along the trail, and the youngest are enjoying the adventure and sights in baby carriers. This group is Hike it Baby Butte County!

Hike it Baby is a national non-profit whose mission is to “support getting families outside with children, birth to school age.” Hike and Baby are terms used loosely, as the program is designed for all skill levels and all ages.

Hike it Baby was founded in Portland in 2013, and has grown substantially in the last five years to include over 300 branches throughout North America.

Hike it Baby Butte County came to our community in August 2018 and is

continuously growing to meet the needs of its members and community as a whole.

Co-Founder, Katie Fox, stumbled upon a Hike it Baby hike in Ashland Oregon, while on vacation with her family in July 2018.

After researching the organization, Katie and Co-Founder, Jennifer Brock, fell in love. It was only a short time later that the two decided to bring Hike it Baby to Butte County.

Hike it Baby’s motto, “raising a generation to love the outdoors,” is at the heart of the organization and the local branch. Since its founding, Hike it Baby Butte County has hosted at least four outdoor adventures every month, including family trail hikes, coffee strolls, Story-Venture hikes (where the hike host brings a book and activity to share), hike-and-plays, and more. They have also hosted collaboration hikes with Chico Area Babywearing, encouraged families to get outside during the winter months with a Facebook Bingo game and prize giveaway, and they have even hosted indoor nature adventures to provide nature exploration during the rainy time of year.

While Hike it Baby Butte County is the local hub for our community, one of the great things about Hike it Baby is there are branches all over the country and members have access to the hike calendars for all of these branches. This means members can join in on hikes while traveling virtually anywhere in North America. Hike it Baby’s membership is free for 90 days (no credit card required) and then only $10 per year. Hike it Baby also offers scholarships to offset this membership cost to anyone who applies, making Hike it Baby inclusive to all families.

As volunteer branch ambassadors for Hike it Baby Butte County, Katie and Jennifer have big plans for the future!

They will be partnering with local organizations and businesses to provide hikes for care providers

suffering from postpartum depression and/ or anxiety, as well as to host additional collaboration hikes. They will also continue to host hikes each month to encourage more families, especially those with little to no hiking experience, to get out and explore Butte County’s outdoor beauty!

Mozart Requiem - North Valley Chamber Choral Sunday, April 14th Made famous again in the movie Amadeus, Mozart’s Requiem was composed in 1791. The work was commissioned by an anonymous nobleman, who had intended to pass off the mass as his own. Mozart, who was in poor health, composed this powerful work while also writing the opera Magic Flute and with the belief that he was writing his own funeral mass.
