REAL-ATIONSHIP GURUS?

ROYAL FAMILY AFFAIR

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic amplified people's loneliness. The dating game was already rough. Add quarantine to the equation, and you have several lonely people. For years, singles, particularly women, have turned to social media for relationship advice. The dependency and need for validation have somewhat placed these relationship experts or gurus on a high pedestal. Well, one of these experts, Derek Jaxson, fell from the throne of glory. After he was exposed for cheating on his wife. Many women felt betrayed by Derek, who sold the 'I don't cheat on my woman' gospel. In addition, many called him out for benefiting financially from women's pain through his books, consultation, and merchandise.

In popular culture, you haven't made it until you have an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The media mogul for years has received reverence for those exclusives with entertainment's biggest stars. The queen of talk shows had the privilege of sitting down with royalty in an exclusive, and perhaps, explosive interview. Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from Royal duties, many wondered what exactly happened. On March 7th 2021, the former Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave Oprah and the world insight. The revelations from the interview left Oprah shocked, and the public divided. All the drama unraveled during the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip's illness. In our opinion, all families face relationship difficulties. It's how family affairs are handled that makes the difference.

On the other hand, Kevin Samuels is fast becoming the go-to online relationship expert. He's the one that rated Saweetie as an adjustable six on Joe Budden's podcast. He does come with facts, despite the delivery. The self-assured image consultant cum relationship expert is twice divorced. According to him, his advice is to save relationships, particularly black relationships. Of course, anyone who is turning to any 'relationship expert', expects transparency. They want to know that there's authenticity-walk the talk. Keeping it 100 though, whatever advice that you seek and receive, take it with a grain of salt.

AWARDS SEASON The 2021 awards season met with postponements and livestreams. In terms of diversity and inclusion, this year's Oscars definitely tried to ensure 'fair' wins. The Grammy awards saw Blue Ivy Carter become the second youngest Grammy award winner in history. Several black films and actors have enjoyed several wins, including the late Chadwick Boseman receiving an honour. Elsewhere, it's 'new school' season, complete with nominations and wins.

ISHAN'S

Bhundu Pop By Peggie Shangwa What makes an artist memorable amongst their peers and to fans? Their ability to stand out. We live in an age where it is easy to be replaced. The rapid consumption of entertainment particularly can leave one as a one-hitwonder. In an industry saturated with so much music and

9

various artistes, Ishan has found his ground. It clicked that he couldn't be just another Zim dancehall artist, instead, he had to become a pop artist. Blending authentic Zimbabwean sounds with experimental pop, electro to create what is perfect, Ishan's Bhundu Pop.

COVER STORY

‘Ishan describes himself as an African artist originally from Zimbabwe-born in Guruve and who grew up in Mvurwi, with a deep passion for music but also inspired to change the world in the best way he can. Describing himself, he says that he is a very optimistic person who continues to believe in the best that every one of us has. On any other day, you can catch him in the studio making beats, but he also has a lowkey passion for business. Kure ’was one of 2019’s most popular tracks, and probably an anthem. The Afro-Pop hit put a spotlight on Isheanesu Chigagura, better known as Ishan. Several music awards would accompany this rise the following year. These accolades included three Zimbabwe Music Association Awards, five Star FM Awards, and a win from the National Arts Merit Awards. From growing up in small towns to hitting it big on the pop mainstream, Ishan is exactly on time. He released his debut project, a nine-track EP, ‘Bhundu Pop’ in November 2020, which defined the sound of Ishan. Roping in fellow Gen Z artists Gemma Griffiths, Tamy Moyo, and Nutty O. In 2021, Ishan stepped out with many expressions, and we sat down to find out the drive to his passion.

My sound is limitless.

GM: This has been a long time coming and we are excited to have you. Welcome, How would you describe your sound, and what message stands out from your music looking at Kure and 'Maidei? Ishan: My sound is limitless. I consider myself as evolving, whatever my mind resorts to creating, and if it qualifies for the betterment and increases my audience value, I go for it. I can't really say that I have a specific message within my creative realm, besides the soul duty of doing God's work, which is the urge of life seeking to express itself through me, I try to touch every aspect of life. At the end of the day, it's all about where the music itself takes me. I can't really put or hold back on what I would have got at that moment. GM: We know you have worked and collaborated with some very gifted artists. Who else would you like to work with locally or internationally?

when the whole idea and reason behind it starts to unfold itself. I’m normally driven by feelings when I’m creating something. GM: How far back do you and music go back and did you always feel that you would be here today? Ishan: I love music and I feel like it’s the only thing that I’m really consciously and subconsciously good at. I don’t see myself doing anything else besides this. I believe my vision surpasses being here as you have asked and that’s the goalGo beyond!

Ishan: I would love to work with anyone really. As long as the energy is correct, we can always work, though I also desire to work with people who inspire me, the likes of Diamond Platinumz, Starboy aka Wizkid, Davido, the list is endless.

GM: What role have you played in the establishment of the entertainment scene in Zimbabwe?

GM: Can you talk to us about the creative process behind ‘Maidei’ specifically the peanut butter concept?

iShan : I am here to play my part as an artist in the scene and as the young Jamaican singer Koffee sang in one of her songs the blessings and the earning are just for the plus, the mission is bringing joy and change into people's lives. The industry has its own glitches but if you stay focused and determined you will always be above the flaws regardless of what the highs and lows are.

Ishan: Maidei was made in very short time space, if I can round it up I would say one hour tops. Sometimes my music makes more sense after I’m finished with creating. That’s when I realize what I'm actually expressing, it's only then

What would you say are the high and low lights to being part of this industry?

COVER STORY

GM: What song is currently on repeat on your playlist and why? Ishan: The song that’s currently on repeat is One Shirt by Jonzing featuring Ruger, D'Prince and Rema, it's a very good piece of art and I really appreciate the creativity that revolves around it, from the beat to vocals then to the melody and the energy of the entire project. GM: We just got into 2021, what projects can we expect from you and where do we see you in the long term period? iShan: New music is on the way nothing but the best of myself, also aspiring to move more steps forward. GM: Tell us about your day, what usually fills up your day? GM: Who inspires you when you write your music? Ishan: Firstly, God is on top when it comes to the source of my inspiration. I also find Diamond's way of executing art fabulous so is Starboy, Burna Boy & Nasty C as well as the fans I am always in touch with. They really get me gassed. GM: What are your thoughts on the African Entertainment scene and how do you see Zimbabwean artists navigating that space to their advantage and growth? Ishan: The African scene is really doing well and I’m so excited at the promises it's giving. I'm seeing a lot of western artists experimenting with Afro beats, a lot of collaborations and I should say it's a

11

transition that has to be praised. Zimbabwe is also moving closer towards stamping its place onto the African scene and it's a matter of time until we are visible and tangible within the space. GM: We know a lot of people would want to know something they don’t already know about you. Things like, what drives you, what makes you smile and what your favourite food is? Ishan: People around me, energies around me, memories within me, visions and dreams I sought to achieve drive me, being happy and seeing others happy. I am pretty much an African foodie, if only people knew ka (Laughs out loud). So my favorite food is sadza and derere (okra), especially mixed with meat, I know that sounds crazy right?

iShan: Music, making beats, listening to other artists, studying and improving my abilities as a human being. GM: What do you want to say to your fans and our readers in parting? iShan: To my fans, I love you and appreciate you for being there for me, focus on your vision and do not let any situation bring doubt that you can’t be anything you want to be. There is no limit, you are your only limit.

Ishan recently released the visuals for his single 'Feelings'. Taken off his 2020 EP, 'Bhundu Pop', the midtempo track features Nutty O. The visuals are minimalistic and use a photo studio as the setting.

POWER r a t DMX

A Work In Progress Image via Getty/Kevin Winter

Hard, real, and one of the few rappers who connected with people, are some words used to describe Earl Simmons, best known as DMX (Dark Man X). DMX came into the rap game during the early 1990s as the antithesis of the bling culture. His distinctive, raspy voice as well as gritty lyrics propelled his career during the late 90s and early 2000s. His single, "Ruff Ryders Anthem," helped to seal his critical and commercial success. He also ventured into acting in blockbuster movies including 'Romeo Must Die' and 'Cradle 2 the Grave'. Despite a successful career, DMX's life was also riddled with addictions, and trouble with the law. Through it all, he kept it real with fans through his music, interviews and faith.

DMX was born on December 18th 1970, in Mount Vernon and was raised in Yonkers, New York. DMX had a tumultuous childhood marked by domestic abuse. He spent much of his childhood and teenage years in group homes or juvenile detention facilities. DMX turned to stealing and befriended stray dogs, which influenced both his moniker and his music. In the early 1990s, he made a name for himself as a battle rapper. Following his big break, DMX sold millions of records and was nominated for three Grammy Awards. He was the first rapper to have his first five albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. He passed away at the age of 50 on April 9, 2021. He suffered a heart attack that left him in a coma for days. He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing. The legacy of his discography is timeless, and the authenticity of his being has left an imprint on the lives of those he impacted.

15

DMX released his debut album ‘It's Dark and Hell Is Hot’ in 1998. The record received commercial success-selling 251,000 copies within its first week of release. The single ‘Get At Me Dog’ served as his debut song off the critically acclaimed album. DMX then released his second studio album, ‘Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood’ in the same year. The album’s single 'RIAA certified' Slippin "gold. In 1999, DMX released his third studio album‘... And Then There Was X’. The album included the hit single ‘Party Up (Up in Here)’. The third single ‘What They Really Want’ featuring Sisqo peaked at number 11 on the Billboard US Hot R & B/Hip-Hop Songs. In 2019, the # DMXChallenge took over social media, reviving the song’s popularity. ‘... And Then There Was X’ was certified 5x Multi-Platinum by the RIAA in 2001. The album was nominated for ‘Best Rap Album’ at the 2001 Grammys. The hit single ‘X Gon' Give It to Ya ’was commercially successful. It was the lead single in the 2003 film. ‘Cradle to the Grave’ soundtrack. X starred alongside Jet Li, Gabrielle Union and Paige Hurd. The single has featured in films and television, including Rick and Morty, Deadpool, Shameless and Euphoria. His work in films included Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Last Hour. In 2006, DMX starred in the reality television series DMX: Soul of a Man, which aired on BET. He published a book of his memoirs entitled, E.A.R.L.: The Autobiography of DMX in 2003. Overall, DMX has sold over 74 million records worldwide. His three-decade career included seven studio albums, seven compilation albums, one mixtape, two EPs, 47 singles and 24 music videos. At the time of his passing, he had been working on a new album. His body of work included The Great Depression, Grand Champ, Year of the Champ, and Undisputed. He also contributed to the culture of the Ruff Ryder Motorcycle chapters across the country through the 'Ruff Ryders' anthem.

DMX Star Power If we look at the life, music and legacy of DMX, we can not ignore his challenges. Ironically, his troubles defined art imitating life. In an interview with the Breakfast Club, DMX stated that he lived to suffer so that others wouldn't. He always found purpose in his music because of the lives that it spoke to. Through the addiction and incarceration, his music kept him alive. The body of work from his discography was that of a superb storyteller. The gritty album artwork always told a story, always including dogs, street walls and the colour red. Though most of his lyrics were often dark, his message was that of hope through the trials. His faith is probably what separated him from the rest. DMX prayed at his shows, interviews, for his fans, and at any opportunity that he got. DMX embodied a passion that made him one of the most compelling performers of his generation. DMX spoke to the streets and stood for the underdog. Often introspective whilst dealing with his' demons', he allowed himself to be vulnerable. He aspired to be a better man with the motivation coming from being a father, and his faith. He may have led a conflicting life, but DMX's resilience was an example to follow. The narrative of a young abandoned boy from the streets to a hitmaking star is inspirational. Leading the way as a leader who contributed to the hip hop culture, the legacy of rap's inscrutable MC will live on.

SPECIAL FEATURE

I am a passionate young woman and a storyteller at heart. I was raised on multiple pages of novels and magazines as I am an avid reader. These pages painted vivid paintings of what life could be if I grabbed it with both hands and went for my dreams. This book worm lifestyle has left me with an affliction: an insatiable desire for words. When I joined GMI 8 years ago, all I wanted was to touch lives with the written word and watch words bring impact and influence into people’s lives for the better. I believed that we could tell a unique story about music and urban culture right here, from where we are from. What I had not anticipated, which has beautifully happened over the years, is growing to be part of a community of trend setters and way pavers across Africa. Being part of the team has strengthened my voice and made sure that it can be heard with resonance across the halls of my time and that is hugely because here at GMI we are dreamers. We believe in each other and support each other’s passions fiercely. I don’t feel that the work I do outside of Groove is ever divorced from the bigger picture. Our tagline at GMI is that we are Metropolitan, African, and Global, and this is the way we deal with all the work we do. The target we set for ourselves is always at these three levels. It is my desire to see us grow and extend our reach on the ground with offices at these 3 levels as well. I am the founder of Constance Frazer Empire Trust and Page Poetry Alive (PPA), poetry collective that nurtures storytellers from page poets to Spoken word artists am also a Creative Entrepreneur, commanding communicator, performer , missionary with Youth with a Mission (YWAM) and a Transformational Leadership development consultant accredited by LASOF. PPA fosters the economic growth of artists by making sure that they are remunerated for their work and that they develop self-sustainable brands. That way art becomes a viable business for each of them. We believe that every person has a story to tell and that every story has a contribution towards changing the world for the better. Through the creation of dialogue around art shared with the audience at each event, we give these stories a voice. All the work that I do feeds into my passion for purpose and destiny alignment in the domains of Art, Media and Education as this is where I am called to serve and function with a huge focus on Youth Development. And at the base of the work I do is a balance of shared values for me as an individual as well as GMI as a whole.

EDITOR'S CHOICE

Joeboy : Somewhere Between Beauty and Magic Review Joeboy is like a favourite child to Nigerian superstar Mr. Eazi. The 23-year-old's career grew under the emPawa brand. In 2019, he first served fans with his debut EP, 'Love & Light'. The five-track project included the smash hits Baby, Beginning, and Don’t Call Me Back featuring Mayorkun. In 2020, he enjoyed success as part of the collaborative single 'Nobody', by DJ Neptune, and also featuring his mentor, Mr. Eazi. Following a string of successful singles, Joeboy released his debut album, 'Somewhere Between Beauty and Magic' - a 14 track record about love. Is the album worth the wait? Joeboy introduces himself whilst claiming his stake in the music industry on 'Count Me Out.' The love theme begins with the second track 'Focus', which speaks of unrequited love. 'Number One' keeps it short and sweet as a lover's position as number one is affirmed. The song is a reminder of 'Baby' whilst riding on a mid-tempo beat. 'Police' is one of the album's standout tracks, featuring strong production, catchy lyrics, and a lot of positive energy. 'Door' is upbeat and danceable, offering lots of room for both drums and guitar. On 'Show Me', Joeboy yearns for physical touch. The upbeat track has a mellow background chord that cuts through guitar sessions and percussions. 'Runaway' takes on the magical aspect of love as the singer affirms his love. 'Lonely' continues with the theme of magic as the song addresses yearning for one's loved one. Joeboy sings, "I don't want to be lonely tonight." Diverting from the love theme into social consciousness is' Consent'. The singer addresses women's rights and the issue of consent. The single is a blend of Afrobeats and Amapiano with African chants. "Oh" is high tempo and danceable. 'Oshe' offers a mature beat with a lounge vibe for easy listening. A Killertunes production, 'Sugar Mama' includes a rhythmic flow of lyrics, ad-libs, and backdrops. Joeboy describes the ideals of a sugar mama relationship. The guitar intro to "Better Things" elevates it to one of the album's standout tracks. The song is filled with words of wisdom, riding on mellow vibes. To close off the record is' Celebration'. The single, which was preloaded and accompanied by colourful visuals, is exactly about celebrating. This feel-good song is mid-tempo with distinct guitars and percussions. Again, Joeboy shares pearls of wisdom, calling listeners to celebrate life and all its beauty.

Overall Review The overall theme of the record is love and Joeboy stated that the album title defined that. 'Somewhere Between Beauty and Magic' is a consistent record in theme and style sonically, There are plenty of chart-topping hits . Some tracks distinguished themselves and showcased great production making this a great debut album for Joeboy. Rate: 4/5 Groove Speakers

Holy Ten : Risky Life Review Holy Ten gained mainstream visibility in 2020 with his smash hit, 'Bho Zvangu'. In 2019, Holy Ten released his debut album, 'Suicide Notes'-an 11-track record. The record deals with the themes of coming of age angst. The follow-up project comes with deeper bass and slightly mature content. The rapper only has two features with Zim dancehall artists Dhadza D on 'Time' and Anita Jaxson on 'Appetite'. The collaborations seems deliberate as a strategy to bridge the gap between the often competing genres. The cover artwork of Holy Ten's face in what seems like a crumpled photo makes a statement. On the opening track, 'Musazvituma,' as well as 'Sahwira' and 'Hanging Nevaskana,' the rapper discusses the difficulties of fame and betrayal.'Taura Zvinokunetsa' addresses mental health and loyalty in friendships. 'Pandichamuka' is socially conscious about gender-based violence. 'MaChills' takes it further in dealing with toxic masculinity. 'Wakatuka Amai' serves to preserve maternal reverence. 'Appetite' serves as the party track off the rather sombre album. The record illustrates the consciousness of Gen Z artists as they question the world as it is. 'Risky Life' is about daily decisions and their effects on who one becomes and external perceptions. Rate: 3 ½/5 Groove Speakers

Justin Bieber : Justice Review As Justin Bieber made the most of quarantine as he prepared for this record. A year following his fifth studio album, 'Changes', comes' Justice'. On the deluxe edition, guest artists include Khalid, Chance the Rapper, Kid Laroi, Dominic Fike, Daniel Caesar, Giveon, Beam, Burna Boy, Benny Blanco, and Lil Uzi Vert, Jaden, Quavo, DaBaby, and Tori Kelly. The pre-released single 'Peaches' featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Bieber's seventh number-one single in the US. Contrary to the album title, the album showcases married, maturing Justin Bieber with several love songs. The use of Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr.'s voice on the record seems out of place. Nothing on the record serves as social justice, racially conscious. However, Bieber returns to his pop roots, and includes some of his best vocals to date. 'Justic' is great addition to the JB discography as it shows the progression of the continuous personal growth othe enteratainer - from a boy to a man. Rate: 3 ½/5 Groove Speakers
