The mission of the international Project Office is to boost and accelerate innovation as a supporting service to the Syntra West Group. Our Office matches external inspiration, expertise and funding with internal trends and demands. While designing, developing and implementing (inter)national projects, the Project Office does not only bring internal improvements, but also (co-)develops solutions for external partners in a broad and international network.

In the past 20 years, we have initiated, coordinated and implemented a wide variety of projects focusing on dual learning, innovation, talent development, entrepreneurship and lifelong learning. Together with (inter)national partners we develop solutions in line with the European programme targets and translate those into new methods, training packages, tools, assessments and concepts.

1.4.1 INNOVATION LEARNING BUSINESS PARKS Timing: 2017-2019 Programme: ESF Scope: Belgium and Poland Target Group: SMEs, Employees and HR staff Topic:

The labour market in Flanders and Poland presents several similar challenges: a shortage of available employees and a significantly increasing retirement age. The project partners in both countries will explore how the knowledge management, employability of employees, developing of HR policies and networking between companies can be improved.

By mapping available competences, talents and knowledge in a business park, the project “Learning Business Parks” aims to gain better insight into the employability and motivation of the employees in business parks and learning networks. An overview of the common training needs and job opportunities will be presented within the networks. Both elements will be combined and will result into an employability matrix, which will serve as a basis to facilitate and promote internal and external mobility and to keep the employees motivated at work.

SEE2DO!

Timing: 2016-2019 Programme: Interreg VA Vlaanderen- Nederland, EFRO Scope: Belgium (Flanders) and The Netherlands Target Group: SMEs Topics:

See2Do! is a joint project implemented by 17 partners from Flanders and the Netherlands: cities and municipalities, provinces, inter-community associations and knowledge institutions. See2Do! aims to stimulate the use of innovative energy renovation techniques for citizens through energy renovation counselling and demonstration projects. The approach focuses on “Doing by seeing”. By demonstrating the energy loss and innovative techniques in public and private buildings, the project partners want to encourage individuals to improve the energy economy of their homes.

This support consists of individual and collective coaching through a digital or physical desk, thermographic scans, energy coaches and a training-of-trainers. The project beneficiaries are also supported in choosing the companies they want to work with. The Dutch successful chain organization concept, which combines a group of companies based on a number of conditions, is used as a model for the Flemish context.

Customers are willing to renovate sustainably, but often don’t know where to start. By coaching them individually and demonstrating the energy loss of their house and how this can be countered, they are highly motivated to step in the project.

DECIMAL: INNOVATIVE TEACHING FOR MAXIMUM LEARNING GROWTH

Timing: 2016-2017 Programme: Flemish Agency for Entrepreneurial Training Scope: Belgium Target Group: Trainers and Trainees Topics:

In this project, trainers learned how to improve their differentiation techniques in class in order to unlock the learning potential growth of each trainee. In adult trainings, the entry level of the trainees is very diverse in terms of prior knowledge, learning level and learning ability. This makes that trainers need to differentiate in class to meet the students’ needs.

In the experiment tested in this project, trainers of different trainings were closely supported and coached during one year. They were given specific advice about methodologies and training techniques to comply with the students’ profiles and learning needs. They then reported about their experiences and lessons learned in focus groups which created a platform for exchanges and peer discussions. The results, findings and lessons learned were collected in an accessible experience-based manual.

CIR-ECO: TOWARDS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY: GENERATING A NEW PROFESSIONAL PROFILE IN HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE SECTOR Timing: 2017-2019 Programme: Erasmus+ KA2 Scope: Belgium, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain Target Group: Trainees Topics:

The Erasmus+ Project Cir-Eco is a European partnership project that aims to support the transition towards a circular economy, with a specific focus on the Household Appliance sector. The transition towards a circular economy requires qualified workforce with specific and sometimes new skills, opportunities for employment and social dialogue. To achieve this, the project partners from Spain, Portugal, Slovenia and Belgium jointly identify, describe and develop the Professional Profile that will be needed to make the Circular Economy a reality in the Household Appliance Sector (repairing, refurbishing and recycling discarded equipment).

The project outcomes are: • The identification, definition and description of the professional profile of workers that will participate in the repairing, refurbishing and recycling of discarded equipment in order to reduce the use of raw materials, minimize the generation of waste and increase the use of the products.

• The description and development of a training curriculum and training modules for the new professional profile in the household appliance sector, that includes topics which are not covered by the existing formal educational systems in the different countries.

• A virtual learning environment presenting the developed training materials to increase the accessibility for the target group.

1.4.2 TALENT TRIPLE EDGE: “ENTREPRENEURSHIP, EMPLOYABILITY AND ENTERPRISING IN A DIGITAL AND GAMING ENVIRONMENT�

Timing: 2017-2020 Programme: Erasmus+ KA2 Scope: Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands, UK Target Group: Trainees, Trainers and SMEs Topics:

The Triple E-Edge project aims to integrate entrepreneurship and digital skills for trainees, trainers and companies in a variety of trainings. The project partners will develop 5 different packages: 1. Demonstration packages: footage to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship on the work floor 2. Knowledge packages: short, accessible digital knowledge snap shots about 4 selected skills 3. Mini games: trainers and trainees develop 4 digital games to be integrated in class 4. Training package about gaming: a training package for trainers on how to use and integrate games in interactive teaching 5. Badges package: the existing methodology on the use of badges (http://www.bebadges.be) will be integrated in job application trainings for trainees. Badges are a form of acknowledgement of certain demonstrated skills that are endorsed by a company or teacher.

DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT EXTENDED

Youth unemployment is a growing concern throughout the European Union. Inclusive employment for all should be high on the priority list, especially for the most vulnerable: early school leavers and youngsters with low education levels or physical or mental impairments. A common geographical or transnational approach is needed to address this economic and social challenge.

Traditionally, diversity management propagates an inclusive human resources management, covering the employer-employee relationship.

Diversity Management Extended built further upon a series of projects regarding the thematic of diversity management. An extended set of instruments was developed to encourage employers to conduct a diverse HR policy focusing on strengths and diverse sets of competences. In addition, (future) employees were made more aware of their strengths and key competencies.

On top of that, the project rendered policy advice to maximize the public support regarding diversity management.

ENHANCING CAPACITIES FOR INSTITUTION BUILDING PROGRAM

Timing: 2015-2016 Programme: Funded by BTC (Belgian Technical Cooperation) Scope: Palestine Target Group: Trainers and Mentors Key Words:

The training package in this project was developed for private sector coaches and apprentices. The master craftsperson in a SME is responsible for the transfer of knowledge and skills to the apprentices through different learning methods and processes.

In this work-based learning setting, they are more than just teachers; they are coaches, tutors and mentors. The training package focused on the role of the mentor to create a positive learning environment for the apprentices, interns and trainees. This is possible by giving constructive feedback, passing on their technical knowledge through active learning techniques and knowing how to deal with possible conflicts. Therefore, a comprehensive toolkit for the different systems of apprenticeships, internships and traineeships was developed. Through the training-of-trainers, the local trainers learned how to train new mentors to enhance the overall impact of the project.

1.4.3 ENTREPRENEURSHIP MOES: MENTORING OF ETHNIC STARTERS

Timing: 2013-2015 Programme: ESF Scope: Belgium Target Group: SMEs and Mentors Key Words:

Several studies and statistics have shown that there are many barriers for immigrants to start a business. They sometimes have little knowledge of the country-specific institutions, organizations and channels to find proper support and advice. They therefore often depend on support from people in their own community, based on trust. However, qualitative and professional support are key factors of launching successful new businesses. Ethnic starters thus need support (with regard to making a business plan, learning the language, networking, finding clients…) as well as advice (regulations, book keeping and administration…).

Through the programme, key figures (such as managers and entrepreneurs) were trained as mentors for start-ups launched by ethnic starters and could act as an intermediator towards investors, organizations and businesses. In this way, the ethnic starters were closely supported in their personal and professional development and growth.

MORE AND BETTER ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN UGANDA

Timing: 2015-2017 Programme: In collaboration with Trias and the Province of West-Flanders Scope: Uganda Target Group: Trainers, Trainees and Non-profit organisation Key Words:

The project aimed to promote qualitative education and training for the members of several organisations TUNADO (The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organisation) and USSIA (Uganda Small Scale Industries Association) representing entrepreneurs.

In order to give (future) entrepreneurs the right tools and background, an accessible entrepreneurship training, tailored to the Ugandan context, was developed in close collaboration with different Ugandan partners. The adaptation of the entire process flow was the basis for developing the entrepreneurship module: “Access to Market”. In the training and manual, each aspect of bringing a business idea to the market is explained and demonstrated by examples and cases: market orientation, planning, marketing, price setting, sales techniques, regulatory frameworks in Uganda etc. In the workbook, the newly gained insights can immediately be applied to ensure the entrepreneurs can translate the necessary knowledge and skills into their own business context. The result of this module is a better awareness of what it implies to run a business and to make it sustainable. The personally developed business plan tailored to the (future) business of the participant is a useful working document that continues to be used after the training.

In order to have a maximum economic impact, a training-of-trainers was organised for both existing and new trainers with a background in entrepreneurship. This training did not only focus on the content of the entrepreneurship module, but also introduced didactical skills and exercises to give the trainers more confidence and tools to teach in an interactive and inspiring way.

ENTERPRISING EUROPE: LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMME

Timing: 2013-2016 Programme: Leonardo Da Vinci - Lifelong Learning Programme Scope: Belgium, UK, Czech Republic Target Group: Employers, Employees and Trainees Topics:

Innovation is a must for European companies to stay competitive in a rapidly transforming economy. The (r)evolution towards the products and services of tomorrow is made possible by the creation and testing of challenging ideas by enterprising people.

The partnership of the Leonardo Da Vinci project ‘Enterprising Europe’ developed an online platform which identifies the enterprising strengths and talents of employees/entrepreneurs and fosters networking by sharing innovative ideas and business plans. The applied method is unique in Europe and can yield an individual analysis on the person’s level of personality, knowledge, attitude and motivation.

Companies and organizations launched calls or challenges for which employees could suggest a proposal. In this way, new approaches and ideas of enterprising people were brought together within the company or society.

Based on the screening of the newly developed tool and trainings tailored to the students’ individual profiles, entrepreneurs and companies were organized and redesigned in order to give practical, no-nonsense training. This training proved to have an added value by its clear impact in the workplace. Based on the experiences and lessons learned, a final proposal for Soft Skills Management was published as a guideline for the companies and entrepreneurs.

1.4.4 LIFELONG LEARNING IDEAL: INNOVATIVE DIDACTICS ENABLING ACTIVATED LEARNING FOR VET STUDENTS

Timing: 2016-2018 Programme: Erasmus+ KA1 Scope: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Romania, Spain Target Group: Trainers Topics:

IDEAL is a mobility project giving trainers the opportunity to exchange knowledge on innovative didactics with colleagues from several EU countries. By experiencing how colleagues abroad deal with similar challenges and changing learning environments, the trainers are inspired to apply these insights in their own teaching practice. The project’s key objectives are: • To stimulate innovation and the quality of didactics: trainings are continuously adapted to the changing training needs and reality of the students. The way of teaching, the training tools and technological innovation have to evolve in order to keep triggering the students.

• To increase the motivation of the trainer and trainee: exchange instruments that enable the trainer to stimulate a more interactive, qualitative and motivating learning environment.

• To build constructive networks: trainers facing similar problems can interact with each other and learn from each other’s experiences and tips and tricks

Thanks to the IDEAL-exchange with Syntra West, I do focus even more on the interaction and dialogue with the students. I try to enhance the learners’ engagement in workshops by focusing on ownership and giving space for feedback. I am convinced this highly contributes to the effectiveness of the workshop, as well as the acquisition of knowledge and the general well-being of the learner.

STEPS: SOFT SKILLS TRAINING ENABLING PROGRESSION AND SUSTAINABILITY

Timing: 2013-2015 Programme: Interreg 2 SEAS Scope: Belgium, the Netherlands, UK, France Target Group: Trainees, Employers, Employment services Key Words:

The European cluster project invested in the reinforcement of soft skills for trainees and future employees in order to help them access the labour market, educational programmes and volunteering projects.

In a first phase, the importance and value of soft skills were demonstrated and shared with diverse stakeholders, such as employers, educational institutions, schools, employment services and trainers by means of cross-border workshops and a skills conference. In this way, they became aware of the importance of including soft skills in the development of future trainings and employment initiatives.

In a second phase, a toolkit about soft skills was developed to support the stakeholders in creating awareness about the crucial importance and reinforcement of key soft skills such as flexibility, customer orientation, communication and cooperation.

This toolkit consisted of methodologies and best practices that facilitate the transferability of soft skills trainings into different sectors and the increased involvement of key figures (employers).

The project gave our students and learners some really interesting insight into the most relevant skills in the workplace, from employers’ perspectives and some tools to implement the learning.

Within the project, a tool is developed to measure the impact of learning activities. ROEM initiates awareness about training, talent and competence management to everyone who is involved in learning processes in companies and organizations. In this way, organisations and training providers can pay more attention to the quality and effectiveness of training initiatives that are delivered in order to better assess the newly acquired skills of employees in view of what the employees really need in the workplace.

ROEM therefore focuses on the impact, learning effect and learning outcomes. These outcomes can be related to the entire organisation, specific departments, personal training plans or learning goals. To assess whether the learning outcomes have been achieved, the tool focuses on a change in attitude or performance.
