MEET JENNIFER HAVENS CEO AT UNITYPOINT HEALTH® – GRINNELL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER JENNIFER HAVENS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN HER STELLAR CREDENTIALS. Although resumes are wonderful tools to showcase skills, education and experience there’s more to a person than what can be captured on a resume.

On July 30, Jennifer Havens became the new chief executive officer (CEO) of UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Her resume fits the bill: bachelor’s degree in business administration from Crichton College, Memphis, Tenn.; master’s degree in health administration from Des Moines University; and almost three decades as a registered nurse. Most recently, Havens was vice president of operations at Central Iowa Healthcare (now UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown) while simultaneously retaining her role as CEO at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

A History of Care Havens always wanted to help people — and that led her to health care. For 18 years she worked at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, starting as a floor nurse.

She helped develop a brain tumor coordinator position and served as

a liaison between care providers, patients and their families. She also was part of a group that piloted a 24/7 contact line for caregivers or providers to reach out for guidance and information.

A Homecoming Havens returned to her native Iowa when an opportunity presented itself to be closer to family. Her last 10 years were spent professionally at Grundy County Memorial Hospital as chief clinical officer before her CEO appointment, and most recently in her role with UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown.

At the heart of it all Havens believes, “the fundamental base of the work we do and my passion for work is all about caring for our patients first. The business side is secondary. People often can’t help the health situation they find themselves in, but we are here to make a difference in the journey.”

In health care, where things are always changing at such an incredible pace, Havens sees the GRMC integration with UnityPoint Health – Des Moines as a benefit for rural health care.

“In my 28 years in the health care profession, I’ve gained such a huge respect for the vital service rural health care provides to small communities,” Havens says. “The integration with GRMC to share resources is going to benefit our community. Through the affiliation agreement, GRMC has added orthopedics services and expanded the ENT (ears, nose and throat) and cardiology services in our community.

“It is wonderful to have access to these specialists without having to leave our community,” says Laura Ferguson, MD, president of the medical staff. “The affiliation is a win-win as we work together to provide more specialties right here in Grinnell.”

The biggest benefit is for the people we serve. By offering more specialty services locally, we can help people manage their chronic conditions more easily, which improves the overall health of the community.

“We will continue to work together to determine what specialists make sense for our community and how we can increase access to other specialties at GRMC,” Ferguson says.

Local Business Invests in Local Health Care As president and CEO of a local business, Bernie Lowe and Associates, Inc., Bernard “Skip” Lowe, III, understands the importance of having health care services available nearby. This commitment to the community is what inspired Lowe to make a contribution toward GRMC physician recruitment efforts.

“We see the value in having a community hospital,” Lowe says.

“When you spot quality, you don’t question it. GRMC is quality. GRMC is the place to receive the highest quality health care services in our area.”

In November 2015, the company pledged $25,000 to GRMC to help recruit physicians to practice here.

Those physicians receive college loan forgiveness of $5,000 for each year practicing medicine in Grinnell, with the chance to receive a total of $25,000. This donation helps expand specialty health care services that area residents need.

WARREN H. BOWER SURGICAL CENTER The Warren H. Bower Surgical Center at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is abuzz with activity − activity focused on providing you with the best care.

Whether you are going to have a gall bladder, weight loss or tonsillectomy procedure or are scheduled to welcome your newborn into this world via caesarean delivery, the GRMC surgical team is here for you.

We have 13 highly qualified surgical nurses and 11 outstanding surgical technicians on staff to ensure every person receives the best treatment.

The surgical suite is staffed Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For all other hours, an on-call team is prepared to handle emergency situations.

HERE’S A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THE GRMC SURGERY SUITE. A WEEK BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE For nonemergency surgeries, GRMC surgical center staff will meet with you. These pre-op interviews are one way staff can learn your medical history and needs, and they’re how you can find out what to expect, and get instructions for before and after your procedure. The interview is a great time to ask questions about your surgery plan, preparation and recovery.

THE DAY BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE

Our surgery receptionist will call to confirm the time of your surgery, let you know where to check in, remind you of your pre-op instructions and talk through any concerns. The nurses, surgeon and anesthesia providers will review your chart and information. Our techs in central processing will pull your preference card, which specifies the items needed for your surgery. They ensure each item is accounted for, sterilized and on your cart.

THE MORNING OF YOUR SURGERY

You’ll be greeted by the friendly face of a volunteer as you arrive in the surgery center. Volunteers staff our surgery waiting area to welcome patients and families and notify nurses of your arrival. Your volunteer might walk you back to surgery or the nurse may come get you. You’ll complete admission paperwork with your nurse, go over the surgery details again and ask any questions.

SURGERY PREPARATION Your nurse will ask you to change into your patient gown. The nurse will take your vitals and start your IV. Family may come back to see you, and your surgeon will check in with you.

DURING AND AFTER YOUR SURGERY The surgeon, nurses, techs and anesthesia providers work as a team in the operating room. When surgery is complete, you’ll be taken to a recovery room and a nurse will stay with you as you wake up from the anesthesia. The time you spend waking up is based on the kind of surgery you underwent and your individual recovery needs.

WHILE YOU’RE IN RECOVERY Your family will be in the surgery waiting area. But don’t worry − they’re being kept company by our friendly volunteer! And you are in great hands with our expert staff.

Behind the scenes, nurses have cleaned the surgical room and taken all items back to central processing to be sterilized. The nurses and surgeon have scrubbed down again and are preparing to perform the next surgery.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO BE RELEASED Once you’re fully alert, a nurse will cover any instructions and medication guidelines including the date of your follow-up appointment with the surgeon. The surgeon will try to meet with you before you leave to discuss how the surgery went. After this, your friend or family member will be able to drive you home.

THE DAY AFTER SURGERY One of our nurses will call you to make sure you are doing well and answer any questions. We want to make sure you are comfortable with your recovery. Please know you can contact us any time with your concerns.

Increasing Care In 2017, more than 3,200 ultrasound exams helped primary care providers diagnose and care for patients. This number grows each year as more women rely on obstetric specialty care available at GRMC. “The convenience of having a hospital close by for appointments and delivery meant one less thing I had to think about during my pregnancy” says Katy Calkins, Brooklyn patient.

Advanced Equipment As the number of patients needing ultrasounds continues to increase, more advanced equipment will allow the medical center to provide enhanced care. Funds raised during the annual fund drive will support the purchase of a new ultrasound machine. The new ultrasound machine allows for clearer, sharper images and greater peace of mind.

Hands-On Care Advanced technology leads to a clearer understanding for patients. “The technicians did a great job explaining what was happening during my ultrasounds,” Calkins adds. “They took the time to explain how the baby was positioned. It’s just one more thing they do to go above and beyond.”

VITAL SIGNS GRMC Awarded ServiShare Safety Performance Award GRMC not only met the ServiShare Safety Performance requirement of fewer than two injuries per 100 full-time employees, but did better than the threshold. ServiShare uses an “incidents per 100 full-time employees” ratio as criteria, so GRMC is compared to hospitals of all sizes. GRMC recorded 1.6 injuries per 100 full-time employees in 2017. The national average was 27 injuries per 100 full-time employees, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Peggy Weisskopf Receives DAISY Award The DAISY Award recognizes outstanding nurses for their extraordinary compassion and skillful care. Peggy Weisskopf, RN, was presented with The DAISY Award for her work at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Peggy’s nomination reads, “Peggy’s leadership, knowledge, family-centered approach and innovation have shaped and impacted numerous nurses, patients and families. She is a great example of what it means to be patient focused. She does what it takes to best support the patient, nurses and staff. Simply put, Peggy is the best.”
