Weddings take center stage, and I had the pleasure of chatting with a bride who recently pulled off the ultimate urban wedding. She shares tips and tricks for making your big day as enjoyable for your guests as it is personally meaningful.

Food and drink lovers are in for a treat. Pat Evans, our resident culinary aficionado, takes us on a journey through the full spectrum of Italian dining—from elegant restaurants to local pizza joints that give our city its unique flavor. Estelle Slootmaker, a fifth-generation Wyoming resident, decided to keep things local when it came time to write her children’s book “Places Where the Sun Don’t Shine.”

She didn’t have to go far. Her husband, Edward Kurlowicz, illustrated the book and it was printed four miles from their home at Five Lakes Press on Linden Avenue SE. She met her book designer, Karen McDairmid, when she lived in Jenison.

“That’s how we live. We try to buy local as much as we can, and if we can do something local, we do it,” said Slootmaker, who spent years as a journalist for Grand Rapids Magazine, Grand Rapids Press, Rapid Growth Media and Issue Media Group. She is communications manager for Our Kitchen Table, a food justice nonprofit.

“The book came together last year,” said Slootmaker. “I had written it during Covid and was caring for my mother at that point, then my husband was burnt out doing other book projects. We love nature and wanted to portray critters in a friendly way.”

“Places Where the Sun Don’t Shine” features a mouse asking about places the sun doesn’t shine, and listing places such as “behind bee’s knees” and “behind closed doors” and “where ‘possums ride.” Each page features illustrations by Kurlowicz. The books ends with, “Places where the sun don’t shine can be so interesting!”

“I’ve always wanted to write children’s books; it’s always been on my radar,” said Slootmaker. “It’s been a dream of mine, but then there’s having to pay the bills.”

After writing poetry for years and recording random little rhymes in notebooks, plus reading her fair share of children’s books— “There’s something about Dr. Seuss”—this journalist turned her mind and heart to books for young readers.

“It’s nice to put a positive, fun spin on things, to help children learn to read, laugh, and have fun reading the book with people they love,” she said.

Slootmaker has ideas for several other children’s books, including one based on a book originally written by her great great grandmother around 1850. This current grandmother has no plans to slow down her writing, what she calls “her way of being in the world.”

“Writing for children is just fun, and I like having fun and seeing a child’s eyes light up,” she said. “It’s tough times out there, but we’ve got to keep looking for the sunshine. But the places the sun doesn’t shine are fun, too.”

Artists in Exile 'The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk' lands at Jewish Theatre

At Jewish Theatre Grand Rapids, the idea that "art is literacy of the heart” comes vividly to life in "The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk," an upcoming production that portrays the entwined lives of painter Marc Chagall and his wife, writer Bella Rosenfeld. Opening in early February, the evocative production raises its curtain just days after International Holocaust Remembrance Day and exemplifies the theater’s mission to enrich the Jewish experience in West Michigan while informing, educating, and engaging its patrons.

Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish descent, is best known for fanciful floating lovers, fiddlers, flying goats, and scenes of shtetl life—images full of whimsy and imagination. Yet beneath these dreamlike surfaces lie the ruptures of the twentieth century: pogroms, displacement, and the threat of Nazi persecution. Born in Vitebsk in 1887, 14

Chagall studied in St. Petersburg from 1907.

He returned to Vitebsk in 1914, married Bella in 1915, and after the 1917 Revolution directed the city’s Fine Arts and founded the People’s School of Art. From 1920 to 1923 he worked in Moscow for the Jewish Theatre before leaving Russia for Paris. In 1941, during the Nazi occupation of France, he emigrated to the United States, settling in New York for the duration of the war. His art is infused with memory, loss, and the unbreakable spirit of his community.

by Ian Ross, the play condenses decades of history into a two-character, twomusician performance. “It’s a love story, yes,” says Rob Franciosi, retired Grand Valley State University professor and chair of the theatre’s play-selection committee, “but it’s also about making beauty out of catastrophe, about how art preserves memory.” The production follows Chagall and Bella from the streets of Vitebsk to Paris and beyond, blending youthful passion with the reflective perspective of later years. The older Chagall, preparing to return to Paris, provides a lens through which the audience contemplates the fragility and persistence of culture and creativity.

Franciosi notes that Chagall’s work often masks profound tragedy with whimsy.

“He’s always seen as lighthearted,” he said, “but the trauma of exile, pogroms, and the Holocaust looms over much of his imagery.

Iconic works such as "White Crucifixion" exemplify this duality, adapting the passion of Jesus to the suffering of the Jewish people in the twentieth century.

sacrifices and creativity offer insight into the delicate dynamics of love and labor within creative collaborations. “It’s a love story, but a complicated one,” Franciosi says. “There’s always that question of who supports whom, and at what cost.”

Jewish Theatre Grand Rapids has long pursued productions that balance Jewish subject matter with broader community interests.

Without a permanent company, it assembles actors, designers, and directors for each production, often collaborating with other local institutions like the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The theatre’s selection committee surveys Jewish theatres nationwide to identify scripts that it hopes will resonate with a Grand Rapids audience. "The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk" was discovered through a streamed performance from the University of Wisconsin that revealed its visually rich storytelling potential. Mary Rademacher, acclaimed locally for her portrayal of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, will direct the two-hander.

“It’s a sparse production, but that simplicity allows us to use Chagall’s colors and images on stage,” Franciosi said. Klezmer music and projections inspired by Chagall’s art promise to immerse audiences in a world that is both playful and haunted, bridging the personal plight of the couple with historical events.

Museums honor Black history Celebrating Black history through art and community

Downtown Grand Rapids comes alive each February as residents celebrate Black History Month. In 2026, the observance takes on added significance with the theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” honoring the 100th anniversary of the first Black History Week in 1926 and reflecting on how Black history celebrations have shaped the status and recognition of Black communities. Two institutions that consistently prove their impact in this regard are the Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives (GRAAMA) and the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

GRAAMA is celebrating a century of Black History with a move into a new home at

41 Sheldon Ave. SE. After eight years in a 2,000-square-foot space at 87 Monroe Center, the museum is growing fifteen-fold in its new 30,000-square-foot facility, offering more exhibit space, classrooms, a library, and a fully equipped auditorium for lectures, performances, and community events. “This new home gives us the opportunity to preserve, share, and celebrate the stories of African Americans in Grand Rapids with the dignity and permanence they deserve,” said George Bayard, Executive Director of GRAAMA. Board President Michael Curtis added, “GRAAMA’s new acquisition is a transformative opportunity for the city, the state, and the region…to appropriately house histories and

stories of a people not readily recognized.”

GRAAMA embodies the African tradition of oral storytelling, preserving local history through the lens of griots—community storytellers—and grandmothers, who historically safeguarded family and communal narratives. Its logo, inspired by Ghanaian Adinkra symbols, reflects this mission of education and cultural preservation: nea onnim no sua a, ohu, meaning, “He who does not know can know from learning.”

A few blocks away, the GRAM presents As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic, a photography exhibit curated by Elliott Ramsey and organized by Aperture. Drawn from Dr. Kenneth Montague’s Wedge Collection in Toronto, the exhibition features over 100 works

by Black photographers from the African diaspora, exploring identity, community, and power. Artists such as LaToya Ruby Frazier, Barkley L. Hendricks, Jamel Shabazz, and Carrie Mae Weems examine self-representation, agency, and belonging.

Finding Bliss at Ole Miss Former Forest Hills dual threat Trinidad Chambliss carries Rebels to victory

Grand Rapids native Trinidad Chambliss has been major college football’s feel-good story this fall. Chambliss transferred from Division II Ferris State to Ole Miss in the powerhouse Southeastern Conference (SEC).

All expectations were that Chambliss would spend the season on the bench for the Rebels.

Instead, he took over as starter due to an injury. Chambliss’ journey to big time college football began at Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids. The son of Trent and Cheryl Chambliss was a fixture at Northern by the time he could walk. Trent served as a security liaison and football coach at Northern. Trinidad played for hours as a child on the school’s courts and fields. In high school, he starred on Northern’s football and basketball teams. He earned all-state honors as both a quarterback and a point guard.

the ball, find matchups with receivers down the field. As a point guard, you’re doing the same thing with shooters around the court,” Chambliss said.

“Everyone loved Trinidad at Northern.

He was kind to everyone and a leader to everyone,” said Northern basketball coach Joe Soules, who has known Trinidad almost his entire life. Chambliss and his close friend Ethan Erickson transformed Northern into one of the state’s top prep basketball programs. Clutch three-point shooter Erickson now stars on Ferris State’s basketball team.

“He’s a guy that other people were drawn to. He had that charismatic personality and infectious smile,” said Ed Ostipan, his football coach at Northern.

Despite his success, Chambliss was not heavily recruited by major college programs.

Initially, it was unclear whether he planned to pursue football or basketball. Furthermore, COVID cut heavily into his college recruitment.

In addition, Chambliss was perceived as undersized for major college football.

Division II football power Ferris State offered him a scholarship. Chambliss added 30 pounds of muscle in Big Rapids through strict diet and training. During his junior year (2024), Chambliss became Ferris State’s starting quarterback.

The dual-threat quarterback was named his conference’s player of the year and was a finalist for the 2024 Harlon Hill Trophy, the award for best Division II college player.

Chambliss led Ferris State to its third Division II national title in three years. Following the championship season, Chambliss decided to enter the transfer portal. He found a supportive home at Ole Miss.

“I think it’s really cool to see that the stage isn’t too big for him,” Ostipan said.

“The support from Grand Rapids is unmatched. The love and support that I have from back home is amazing,” Chambliss said.

Help along the senior care journey A list of elder care resources to lend a helping hand during your season of caregiving.

My father had been in assisted living and memory care at Edison Christian Life Services for a year and a half before he passed away in November 2025. I and my family were so grateful for every bit of help the nurses, aides, staff, and Faith Hospice gave him in his last months of life.

Our journey through both of my parents’ final years was helped by many including hospital social workers, care managers, financial people, Edison social workers, Faith Hospice, and even the Sonus Hearing staff who helped me get my dad into the car after a visit.

The caregiving journey can seem overwhelming, whether you’re doing fulltime physical care for an elder, part-time care, stopping in for welfare checks, doing the shopping and attending appointments, trying to find the right care facility, or worrying about all of it from afar.

The journey isn’t easy. In fact, it’s exhausting, time consuming, and downright depressing at times. Yet it can also be funny, joyful, and grace-giving. But you don’t have to do it alone. There are many resources available to provide advice, services, and a listening ear. In fact, there are so many ways and means to access help that we can’t list them all here. Frankly, there is no reason for elders and caregivers to lack necessary resources thanks to the support systems in our area.

What follows is a brief list of local and national resources eager to help you on the elder care journey.

Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (aaawm.org). This national nonprofit has 16 offices throughout Michigan and is a one-stop shop for your questions and needs. AAAs “are experts on all aspects of aging,” says the website. It’s true. Experts offer help on Medicaid, Medicare, and insurance; finding needed services; in-home assessments; advocate on a larger scale for new services, funding, and public policy.

AARP (aarp.org/caregiving). The website offers a plethora of articles that address issues related to caregiving such as “8 Habits to Tame Caregiving Perfectionism” and “How Caregivers Can Balance a Loved One’s Safety and Dignity.” Become a member of AARP or peruse the articles on the website for good advice.

Family Caregiver Alliance (caregiver.org). This national organization offers a variety of resources including articles and lists of services by state and in a number of languages including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Tagalog.

National Council on Aging (ncoa.org). The organization’s goal is “aging well for every person,” and toward that end offers support for organizations helping older adults, health and wellness advice, and support for caregivers including accessing online therapy and suicide prevention.

Care.com connects families with caregivers for all ages, including elder care.

A Place for Mom (aplaceformom.com) offers guidance, reviews, and referrals to assisted living facilities in the area.

Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services (visitingangels.com) will help you with home care for your elder, with free consultations. Services are available throughout West Michigan.

Senior Neighbors (seniorneighbors.org). Its mission is “enhancing the lives of seniors in Kent County,” and it does so through services for both urgent and everyday needs such as Engaging Wellness programs, tech support, refugee assistance, help with money management, veteran services, and home maintenance.

Kent County Community Action (kentcountymi. gov/204/Senior-Services). The county provides a number of services for elders including meals, transportation, information and referrals, Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), and the senior weatherization program (WAP) to help seniors make their homes more energy efficient.

Advice from a Daughter •Curb your impatience. Most times your elder isn’t moving slowly on purpose or confused just to annoy you. Be ready to move slowly, answer questions twice, and wait in doctor’s office. Bring a book, breathe deeply, look around for the beauty you can see.

Its Dementia Friends Michigan program offers classes and education; it provides help for elders who want to stay in their homes such as respite services, meals, and transportation; State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) helps with health benefits; and it participates in the Kent County Elder Abuse Coalition.

•Let them. After my mother’s first hospitalization and rehab, she refused all help for laundry, cleaning, shopping, lawn care, cooking. We tried, but eventually had to say, “OK, you don’t want help. Figure it out.” We were happier and she got her own way.

•Talk about it. Not endlessly and annoyingly, but enough to air a few grievances, mourn, seek advice, and calm your soul. Find a good friend or a therapist, or both.

•Affairs in order. Encourage your parents to create a will, decide on durable powers of attorney (I was the DPOA for my parents’ health care, my brother for their finances), sign DNRs if necessary, decide on disposition of investment assets, small items from the house, Christmas decorations, etc.

During the last years of my parents’ lives, we found help in a variety of places and ways. Please take advantage of the resources offered in these ways.

•Hospice. We love Faith Hospice, which services Edison Christian where my dad lived. The nurses were attentive and kept us informed, Faith Hospice sent their chaplain and music therapist, as well as provided comfort carts in his room as we waited through his last days. The music therapist played hymns and cowboy songs, his favorites, while my brother and I mostly cried through the brief concerts. There are several hospice organizations throughout West Michigan including West Michigan Hospice, Corewell Health Hospice and Palliative Care, and Hospice of Michigan.

•Social workers. Both Faith Hospice and Corewell offered social work services during hospitalizations and final days, as did Edison during my dad’s stay. Social workers also helped during my mom’s rehab stints. Please take advantage of their expertise and help •Senior events in the community. My mom was a constant attendee at Stretch ‘N Flex through the Northview senior center. Your school district may have similar events and programs, as may your local library.

•Faith community. Turn to your local church, synagogue, or mosque for spiritual guidance and counseling, as well as events, friendships, and activities for your elder.

Adored Boutique is celebrating its ninth year selling responsibly produced clothing and accessories. For owner, Emily Smith, the purpose was clear from the beginning – support communities through ethical sourcing and manufacturing practices. Everything in the store, from the pajama sets and suede handbags to soy candles and cashmere scarves is sourced from businesses that treat and pay their employees fairly.

“My business needed to represent the heart of the Father for how he respects us and our decision to either pursue him or not pursue him; that he doesn’t force anything upon us,” Smith said. “I needed to sell products where the people who made those products treated their workers in the same way – that they had dignity and respect 24

If you want to add a trend, get an amazing leather pant and wear the heck out of them and pair them with your cream sweater. But when you’re no longer wearing the leather pants, you can still keep the sweater.”

A master engraver transforms metal into art, blending patience, precision, and passion to preserve NASCAR history from a rural farmhouse.

In a quiet corner of West Michigan, where the Pere Marquette Highway cuts through apple orchards and towering wind turbines, Rex Pedersen is hard at work. The soft hum of his high-tech engraving setup mixes with the blare of "Hotel California" over his sound system as he labors over a project that will take him 82 hours to complete: the NASCAR Goodyear Gold Car trophy.

Rex is a study in contrasts. Outside his 19th-century farmhouse—a building otherwise little changed since it was built—sits a black Maserati, gleaming beside the remains of the family-owned gun shop, now closed. Inside, his parlor-turnedengraving studio brims with cutting-edge tools, the glow of red-tinted light, and a sliding glass door that must have been added in the 1970s. orchard and the creek where he played as a boy.

“People are always surprised,” Rex says, after taking a call. “Yes, it’s me, living large in an old farmhouse with three cats and an 83-year-old sister.” He chuckles at the image.

Rex has been engraving since 1978, a third-generation gunsmith who trained under Austria’s Martin Strolz in the GRS Grand Masters Program.

Over decades, he has refined a craft that blends technical Rex Pedersen precision with artistic flair. His intricate freehand carvings— on firearms, trophies, and other commissions—have graced publications like Guns Magazine and Custom Firearms Engraving, earning him awards including the FEGA James Meek Award and the Smith & Wesson Masterpiece Award.

For the past 25 years, Rex has been responsible for engraving the Goodyear Gold Car trophy for the NASCAR Cup Series Champion. Each carshaped trophy demands extraordinary patience and attention to detail, and Rex treats each one like a living, breathing entity.

“You sit here, waiting for the car to arrive, like a baby being delivered,” he says, smiling.

“Eighteen-hour days, eyes bleeding, AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses cranked up while I chip away!”

Rex’s influence extends beyond his own work. He teaches others, including Kindred, the designer behind Taylor Swift’s engagement ring. And while he began his trade years ago imagining engravers as old men in jewelry shops listening to classical music, Rex now finds himself the “old guy” and it's not anything like he'd imagined.

On inherited property near a light that blinks at an intersection now less traveled, Rex Pedersen represents a fascinating intersection of tradition and modernity. The meticulous craft of engraving—passed down through generations, refined by global masters, and applied to a sport that few would have predicted when the artform began—finds its cozy home among creeky floorboards and congenial cats.

For Pedersen, each carving is more than decoration; it is artistry made tangible. And for anyone lucky enough to stop by, it’s a chance to witness a master at work in a world where few could imagine a NASCAR trophy, a black Maserati, a shuttered gun shop, and an old farmhouse coming together so perfectly.

Know Your History

One of your most powerful health tools isn’t a test—it’s a conversation!

Megan considered herself healthy. She exercised most days, ate well, and took pride in taking care of herself. Her family seemed to have good genes, her grandmother lived into her nineties, and her mom still walked every morning at seventy-five. So, when her doctor asked if she had a family history of heart disease, she shrugged.

“Not that I know of,” she said.

But during a weekend visit, Megan’s dad casually mentioned he’d been on cholesterol medication for years.

“My doctor said it’s probably genetic,” he said, almost like it was no big deal. That comment stuck with her.

At her next appointment, Megan brought it up. Her Dr. Lara Baatenburg, MD physician ordered an Lp(a) test, which looks at a genetic marker for heart disease risk, something you can’t change with diet or exercise alone. Her results came back elevated.

It was a surprise, but also an opportunity.

With her doctor’s help, she looked closer at her diet. She realized that even though she ate “healthy,” it was still higher in saturated fat than ideal. She wasn’t getting enough soluble fiber or heart-healthy fats, and fish wasn’t something she ate often.

So, she made some changes. She swapped red meat for beans and lentils a few nights a week, started using olive oil instead of butter, and made salmon part of her regular routine.

She checked in with her physician regularly to monitor her cholesterol and other markers.

Now, in her late fifties, Megan feels great— and confident. She knows she’s doing what she can to lower her risk and stay healthy long-term. Her family history didn’t scare her; it guided her.

Now imagine a different version of Megan.

Same person, same habits, same good intentions, but this time, she never had that conversation with her dad. She continued 26

what she was doing, assuming she was low risk because she felt good and lived “healthy.”

At sixty-five, she began noticing chest pressure on her morning walks. She brushed it off as stress or aging until it got worse. A stress test led to a heart catheterization and a stent. She recovered, but her life shifted.

Suddenly, she was on four new medications and juggling appointments with both her primary care doctor and a cardiologist several times a year. The cost, time, and worry weighed on her.

The difference between these two versions of Megan isn’t luck—it’s knowledge. Knowing your family history gives you power. It helps you take action instead of waiting for something to happen. Too often, people think family history is just another box to fill out at the doctor’s office, but it’s actually one of the most valuable, and underused, tools in medicine.

When you know what runs in your family, your doctor can tailor your care in ways that go beyond general guidelines.

For example, most people know women are advised to start mammograms at 40. But if you have a strong family history of breast cancer, especially if someone was diagnosed young, you may need to start earlier or add additional imaging.

The same goes for colon cancer. The general guideline is to start screening at 45, but if you have a parent or sibling diagnosed early, that timeline moves up. Heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions follow the same pattern.

When you know your family history, you can use it to stay ahead instead of reacting later.

Family history also changes how we interpret “normal.”

If your cholesterol is slightly high but both of your parents had heart disease, that number carries more weight. If your blood sugar is creeping up and you have a family history of diabetes, it might be time to make changes before it becomes a diagnosis.

It’s the difference between reactive care— waiting for something to go wrong before you address it—and proactive care—taking steps early to stay well.

Your family history doesn’t just help you; it helps the next generation. When you learn about your family’s health patterns and share them with your doctor, that knowledge benefits your kids and even your grandkids. They’ll have a clearer understanding of their own risks and how to manage them.

“There’s a fog upon L.A.,” George Harrison sang from his house on Blue Jay Way. I remember that street—spent New Year’s Eve there at the turn of the millennium, looking out over city lights as numerous as the stars in attendance. Patrick Swayze, Tia Carrere, Dennis Hopper, Harvey Keitel—I’d seen them all (and more) at that particular house. It was the type of place where everyone was waiting for someone even more important to arrive.

That’s the Blue Jay Way way.

Fast forward 26 years, and I’m back in GR, where things are decidedly calmer. Perched on the rooftop at Rapid River, sipping flavored whiskey, was where I first spotted the Blue Jay Hotel. What the heck? How long has that been there? Turns out, not long.

Brad Veneklase, who’s spent nearly three decades in real estate, saw an opportunity to bring something different to Bridge Street. He bought the building and—along with Kozak 28

Construction—gave it a “full gut rehab,” he said. Out of that effort rose a small, five-room boutique hotel with an event space on the ground floor.

The main floor, at 1,800 square feet, has a full kitchen, bar, dining booths, lounge areas, and even a courtyard with a firepit. It can host a wedding rehearsal, a holiday party, or a quiet gathering of friends. Upstairs are five hotel rooms, each with its own personality: lofty ceilings, brick walls, modern touches, and upscale furnishings you’d only find in a boutique property.

“It’s all in the way you set it up,” Brad said, describing the management system. Guests check in via key codes; the management company handles cleaning and maintenance.

“We’ve had no issues, and it allows people to focus on enjoying the space.”

Bridge Street has evolved into one of the city’s most vibrant corridors, home to bars like

The Knickerbocker, O'Toole's, Anchor Bar, and restaurants: One Bourbon, Butcher’s Union, Fratelli’s, Condado Tacos. The list goes on, and The Blue Jay fits right in, offering something it didn’t have before: a place to gather and stay without leaving the neighborhood.

Brad named the hotel ‘Blue Jay’ after his daughter Finnley’s childhood nickname, creating a family legacy in a city he loves. “We wanted something small, manageable, and unique,” he said of he and his wife Alyssa, who has joined him in his real estate efforts at Urban Soil Realty.

In October, downtown Grand Rapids glowed with the kind of warmth that happens only during Michigan’s fleeting fall—golden light caught the brickwork of the old Harris Building, guests streamed in dressed in all black per the bride’s request, and the air buzzed with something that felt both timeless and absolutely Grand Rapids now.

Inside, where exposed beams meet century-old charm, Rachael Petzak and Brian DeMaagd said “I do” in what could only be described as an urban fairytale. One room hosted vows. Another—just across a hallway—poured cocktails during a seamless transformation. By evening, the ceremony space had become a reception hall, revealing a long banquet table set for a wedding party that spanned nearly the length of the industrial-chic room. A DJ booth thrummed to life. The bar opened. Guests in festive attire shimmered under warm lights.

When the Question Pops, Start With the Venue When Brian proposed on July 4, 2024, Rachael didn’t waste a minute. Before the heat of the fireworks had cooled, she began researching venues.

“I was focused on guest experience,” she says. “That was my main concern, so the right venue was really important to me.”

This mindset is something we’re hearing more often from brides in West Michigan: the venue isn’t just a location—it sets the tone for the entire day.

Catering Chaos and the Art of Thinking Ahead Once the venue was locked, Rachael’s next move was the caterer. Her top picks—Martha’s Vineyard and Kangaroo Kitchen—were both already booked more than a year out.

If you’re planning a Grand Rapids wedding with a specific caterer in mind, consider this your wake-up call.

Ultimately, she went with Gilmore Catering, whose reputation for elevated classics, boutique service, and experience with complex setups made them a natural fit. “I didn’t mind spending a little more,” she said. “I wanted guests to have a good experience.”

She brought her mom and sisters—something she’d dreamed of since her sister Kaylin’s wedding on a golf course nearly ten years earlier. Two very different weddings, but both stunning.

And if there’s one thing Rachael learned in the years between them, it’s this: Wedding TikTok can be your best friend—or your downfall.

She used it for ideas, inspiration, and checklists, but drew a line at comparison.

“This was our day,” she said. “I didn’t want to do things because someone online did them. I wanted it to feel like us.”

A LITTLE ITALIAN HISTORY Italians began their emigration to the United States back in the late 1800s, many from Southern Italy and Sicily, and once settled in their American city of choice, they created dense enclaves complete with plenty of spots to pick up their favorites.

It took until post-World War II for Italian food, like many other cuisines from Europe, to enter the mainstream. However, that brought a pull to American tastes, which differs from Italy’s tendency to focus on regional, seasonal and light fare.

Italian American cuisine often centers heavily around tomato sauce, cheese and meat. The new “red sauce” joints often melded Italian influences into their own adaptations, creating “classic Italian dishes” like chicken parmesan, spaghetti with meatballs, baked ziti and chicken alfredo. That’s not counting the American innovations around the beautifully, light and minimalist pizza pies from Naples, with pizzerias often built for delivery and takeout business, or sports bars, with various styles across the U.S. And with all Americanization, Italian remains one of the most populwar cuisines for American palates, with more than 130,000 Italian restaurants and pizzerias in the United States, an industry worth approximately $100 billion, according to some estimates.

With all that said, more independent restaurants have, in recent history, begun to focus on regional Italian cuisines truer to their origin.

DOWNTOWN CHARMERS For nearly 30 years, Bistro Bella Vita, 44 Cesar E. Chavez Ave. SW, has anchored downtown in its looming position next to Van Andel Arena, and while it highlights itself as a Mediterranean restaurant specializing in French and Italian, the pizza and pasta, which is made in house, have long been the cornerstone of the menu. Open seven days a week, including lunch during the week, Bistro Bella Vita keeps its long-standing

favorites, like Rotini Con Pollo and Pizza Rustica, in the rotation, but it’s never afraid to keep things fresh and innovative.

The newest addition to the Grand Rapids Italian scene is Allora, 201 Monroe Ave. NW, replacing the stalwart Reserve next to DeVos Place. Its coastal Italian flair is evident on the menu, with plenty of bright, citrusy punch on its fresh seafood. A yellowfin crudo, Caesar salad and the whole roasted sea bream is a wonderful path to follow at Allora. But it’s not all seafood, as the restaurant also serves up steak and pastas like a traditional Roman style bucatini all‘amatriciana.

NEIGHBORHOOD GEMS Palio, 545 Michigan St. NE, is named after the historic Palio di Siena horse race, which runs through Siena, Italy, twice a year. The Grand Rapids location is an offshoot of an Ann Arbor staple, which has been open since 1991, and serves up plenty of dishes one would expect at a “traditional Italian” restaurant, including spaghetti and meatballs, shrimp scampi, chicken parmesan, chicken Milanese, lasagna and an assortment of pizzas.

Chef Jenna Arcidiacono is nearly a household name in West Michigan at the helm of Amore Trattoria, 5080 Alpine Ave. NW. The restaurant blends Arcidiacono’s long cooking background with an Italian husband and motherin-law to help bring innovative Italian cuisine to Grand Rapids. Dishes range from a classic Amtriciana to wild boar pappardelle to the simple, yet delicious cacio e pepe.

Gilmore Collection’s Mangiamo, 1033 Lake Drive SE, calls itself classic Italian cuisine with modern sophistication.

The menu reads as a cross between an Italian restaurant and a steakhouse, in a beautiful mansion in the East Hills neighborhood. It also has Mo’s Lounge, a cool nearly speakeasy type bar.

Testa Rossa, 1017 Wealthy St. SE, opened up in 2023 by the owners of Uncle Cheetah’s, Electric Cheetah and The Old Goat. It’s a place for crispy pizzas, GR M AG .CO M

pastas and sandwiches. Its menu features antipasti like bruschetta, garlic knots, calamari and baked meatballs, a huge assortment of pizzas and pastas and some nice entrée selections like Sicilian pot roast and sausage and peppers.

Licari’s Sicilian Pizza Kitchen first opened in 2012 near Knapp’s Corner, but last year it opened up a new larger space at 3123 Leonard St. NE. Along with its pizza and pasta centric menu, the Leonard Street location also features a bocce court and four-season patio. There is also a Licari’s location in Hudsonville, 3627 Baldwin St. Noto’s Old World Italian Dining dates back to 1982 and settled into its present, big location at 6600 28th St. SE in 1997. Along with a menu featuring family recipes from Italy and local products, Noto’s also prides itself on its

massive Italian wine cellar and its bocce courts. Noto’s also has a location in Grand Haven, Noto’s at the Bil-Mar, 1223 S. Harbor Drive.

FAMILY STAPLES ACROSS GRAND RAPIDS On the West Side, Salvatore’s, 654 Stocking Ave. NW, has loomed heavy since 1976. The menu highlights including old Sicilian family recipes from Salvatore and Vincenza Tinervia.

Like many of the family restaurants, it has a large menu that features a variety of classic Italian American dishes that diners would expect to find at an Italian restaurant.

until a long-time location of GB Russo and Son was found on 29th Street. The sixgeneration family business has since reopened out in the Tanger Outlets, 350 84th St. SW, with plenty of the same charm it has in the past. Unlike other family joints, Russo’s has an extensive market with Italian products ready to take home. The family also has Russo’s Pizza at 1760 44th St, dating back to 1953.

In 1980, Peter Secchia opened Pietro’s Italian Restaurant, 2780 Birchcrest Drive SE, named after Peter’s grandfather Pietro, who left Italy in 1906 and brought recipes with his wife Regina. The menu continues the traditions set up by the Secchias and offers several options on the menus, including family-style dinners, four- and five-course menu selections and classic plated dinners.

ITALIAN SPORTS BARS With roots back to 1971, Florentines Sports Lounge 4261 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, has more than 40 screens to watch sports with a menu spanning classic Italian American dishes and pizzas to a slate of burgers and sandwiches.

Darby Tutas is passionate about dance and has always dreamed of having her own studio. Bourbon & Beyond Expertly crafted dishes and carefully curated spirits combine for a memorable meal

Tucked into the evolving streetscape of Grand Rapids’ West Side, One Bourbon feels at once familiar and entirely unexpected—a place where whiskey reigns supreme, and every plate arriving from the kitchen seems purpose-built to match it. On a recent evening, I shared a table with my cousin George, a longtime foodie friend and the one I turn to for occasions like this. Our meal began with a vanilla-orange infused Old Fashioned, a cocktail so popular that Meagan Freriks, co-owner and heart of the operation, tells me they keep it on tap. “It’s one of those drinks that everyone seems to love,” she said in our interview, and it was easy to understand why: smooth, balanced, comforting, with just the right whisper of citrus.

The food at One Bourbon mirrors the precision of the drinks program. That evening, George and I sampled a ribeye and a seasonal salmon dish, accompanied by a fall salad of roasted beets and a Japanese-inspired vegan crème brûlée—a combination that sounds unusual, maybe even daring, but was nothing short of spectacular. “We do legitimate real food,” Meagan says. “Scratch kitchen, by people who know and love good dishes.” Each bite seemed 60

thoughtfully composed, reflecting a kitchen that takes comfort food seriously but refuses to be ordinary. And the service? Impeccable.

Attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without pretense. Our server, sporting a man bun, made the experience feel casual and comfortable, a reminder that this is a place where top-shelf bourbon and thoughtfully crafted dishes coexist with a relaxed, unpretentious vibe.

Since its founding in 2016, One Bourbon has become a destination for bourbon lovers and food enthusiasts alike. With more than 400 bourbons and whiskeys on offer, the bar is as much a curiosity as it is a cornerstone.

From date-night steaks to vegetarian finds and a “deceptively simple” chicken sandwich that was voted Best in GR, One Bourbon pairs thoughtful cuisine with carefully curated drinks. And desserts? Don’t skip the peanut butter pie.

Brewing a Vision Meagan didn’t set out in life to open a bar, but the food and beverage scene lacked her beverage of choice: bourbon. “I didn’t like beer,” she said, recalling early frustrations with uninspiring brewery offerings and bland bar menus. Alongside her husband, Brett, and a close couple of friends, she began sketching out what would eventually become One Bourbon. “None of us come from money.

We’re not trust fund kids. We don’t do this type of thing…but we did do it, and One Bourbon is what we got,” she says, her tone both proud and matter-of-fact.

The location they settled on is steeped in history. “It was the first place to hold a liquor license,” Meagan explains, referring to the space once owned by the Wasco family, who purchased it after Prohibition. “The bar has not changed at all…same walls, same rocks, same Michigan basement. Everyone leaves a mark.” That mix of authenticity and grit sets the tone for the entire experience.

Meagan’s background in the culinary world is formidable. A certified executive chef, she honed her craft through years of climbing the ranks in senior living, hotels, and fine dining, traveling from Kent Country Club to Bay Point Inn, managing hundreds of properties across multiple states. “I was thrust into a big role at a young age,” she says. “I was killing myself for someone else’s benefit. I knew the chances of opening were low because none of us have money or are generationally wealthy. But I had all these years of experience—I said, why don’t we actually do this?”

The culinary philosophy at One Bourbon is dynamic. The menu changes roughly three times a year, with seasonal offerings complementing staples that have earned a loyal following. “We try

really hard,” Meagan says. “We all work really, really hard to make things work. Not many independents are left, and we work hard to make it work.” Seasonal dishes might include fresh trout almondine, collard greens confit, low-country risotto, or double crab and duck prepared in playful combinations. “We like to do kinda fun things,” she says. “Duck two ways, Lowcountry risotto and collard greens confit…seasonal specials that keep people guessing.” But fan favorites—the ribeye, the chicken sandwich, the peanut butter pie— remain constants. “None of those things will go away,” she says.

Meagan’s love of food—and a thousand creative ideas—was nurtured through years of experience. “Anyone with experience in food service, you have a thousand ideas," she says.

One Bourbon’s menu offers dishes that are comforting yet elevated, familiar yet inventive. Cocktails follow the same philosophy. The bar features over 400 spirits, and some of its most popular creations—like the burnt-orange and vanilla Old Fashioned— are even kept on draft. Accessing top-shelf bourbon, however, is another story, Meagan admits. “You can’t just order them. Bourbons are allocated, and you need a rep to assign them to you. You have to build the right connections to get the bottles you want.

And instead of going to a place like ours that specializes in bourbon, sometimes they go to the bar that serves the most Fireball.”

More Than Just a Bourbon Bar Beyond the bourbon, what makes One Bourbon special is the culture Meagan has cultivated with Brett and her team. Meagan speaks proudly of them, like they're family.

“We hire people to be them,” she says.

Referring to the friendly server I encountered on my visit with George: “Scotty, just love him.” Their collective care transforms a night out into something memorable.

Part of what makes One Bourbon resonate is Meagan’s personal touch, evident in how she built the restaurant from the ground up. Early brainstorming sessions often happened over bourbon with friends, where she first sketched out the business plan that would become One Bourbon. “The next time we got together, I gave them this book…a business plan to open our own place,” she recalls. “They laughed at first. Heavenly helping Recipe: whitefish parmigiana with angel hair pasta

Brought to us courtesy of Homecooked, a community-supported recipe driven quarterly published in Oregon that "celebrates the profound connections between food, culture, and the human experience," this dish has a story as rich as its flavor.

Issue 4 of Homecooked turns its focus to Michigan's Fruit Ridge—a 158-square-mile area northwest of Grand Rapids known for its prime fruit-growing climate centered around Sparta that spans parts of Kent, Newaygo, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties—celebrating the people, flavors, and businesses that give the region its culinary character.

From The Cheese Lady, whose artisanal cheeses are a local treasure, to Pux Cider, crafting beverages with a sense of place, the authors highlight the stories behind the food and the people who make it. Surprisingly, the recipes from Fruit Ridge don’t all involve fruit. Some are savory, like this whitefish parmigiana with angel hair pasta, a rich and creamy dish with a golden, bubbling cheese topping, perfectly paired with tender pasta and fresh parsley for garnish.

WHITEFISH PARMIGIANA WITH ANGEL HAIR PASTA Feeds 4 Ingredients 2 pounds whitefish fillets 2 medium lemons Kosher salt Black pepper 3 cups finely shredded Parmigiano Reggiano (only the real stuff, in a block) ¾ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup crème fraîche 1 pound angel hair pasta ½ cup olive oil ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley Note: If you are unable to find 64

whitefish, this recipe also works well with orange roughy, tilapia, flounder, or pollock.

Directions Preheat the oven to 350°F. Rinse the whitefish in cold water and dry with a paper towel. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the fillets skin side down. (If fillets don’t have skin, place the side that formerly had skin down.) Squeeze juice from ½ of a lemon over the fillets and sprinkle moderately with salt and pepper.

Parmigiano with the mayonnaise, crème fraîche, and 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Set aside.

Bake the fish for 15–20 minutes, or until it flakes easily and reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. While the fish is baking, bring a large pot of water to a boil.

When the fish is done, remove it from the oven and set the oven to broil. Spread the cheese and mayonnaise mixture over the tops of the fish. Once the pot of water is boiling, add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions.

When the broiler is hot, slide

the fish back in. Broil for about 2 minutes, or until the tops of the creamy mixture brown and bubble slightly (watch closely). Remove from the oven.

Once the pasta is cooked, drain it and mix with 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, ½ cup olive oil, 1 cup Parmigiano, and salt and pepper to taste.

Plate portions of pasta with about 8–10 ounces of whitefish (usually ½ of a fillet). Garnish with lemon wedges and parsley, and serve with the remaining Parmigiano.

Hobbyists turned expert cider makers savor the sweet fruits of their labor

Sometimes the sweet smell of success has the scent of blackberries. Other times, it’s red wine and berries that catch your attention.

And sometimes, it’s just peachy.

If you haven’t guessed yet, we’re talking about ciders—specifically Sierra Rose Cellars in Kentwood, a cidery run by a family that has been quietly perfecting its craft and fermenting its way into the state’s beverage scene for more than two decades.

It recently earned national attention when its Sangria Cider was named one of the top 12 hard ciders in the country by Foodie. com and Untapped.com.

That’s a pretty sweet nod for a small,

family-run operation that started as a hobby.

Before cider became their calling card, Bob and Rose Bonga were Amway employees who dabbled in home winemaking. What began in their basement turned into Cascade Winery, which opened about 23 years ago on 28th Street in Cascade Township.

“We started making wine and stuff at home,” Bob said. “The bigger it got, we decided to open our own place.”

Over the years, the Bongas opened and closed a few tasting rooms—one in Cascade, another in Rockford—but today, all operations run out of their production facility on Broadmoor Avenue in Kentwood. There, their son Roger oversees the day-to-day work of fermenting, blending and bottling under the family’s three labels: Sierra Rose, Jaden James, and Kayla Ray. While it’s grown to be the family business’ focus, cider wasn’t part of the original business plan. “We happened to get into the cider making by accident,” Bob said with a laugh. “And it’s blossomed very well.”

That “accident” happened around 2008, when Roger started experimenting with apples during the economic downturn. His early batches caught on fast. “People started liking it,” Bob said. “And it just took off from there.”

Today, the ciders have become their top sellers, distributed statewide and poured at

a number of West Michigan restaurants and bars. At Alebird Taphouse in Byron Center, bartender Tony said the Bongas’ cider has earned a permanent spot on the menu.

“They’re such great people,” he said. “We always keep a tap dedicated to Sierra Rose.”

The cider that’s been grabbing national attention—Sierra Rose Sangria.

Chase Nobis, the brand manager, said the Sangria has been part of their lineup for a decade. “It’s always been my favorite of our 10 flavors,” he said. “Believe it or not, it’s actually our second-best seller. Blackberry is still the top request—for now.”

Bob and Rose, both in their seventies now, still come to the winery most days. They’ve handed much of the daily grind to Roger, but their fingerprints are still everywhere—from the flavor names to the company culture.

Each label carries the name of one of their grandchildren: Sierra, Kayla, and Jaden. An interesting sidenote: all three grandkids attended the West Michigan Aviation Academy—two of them even earned pilot’s licenses. Sierra, the oldest at 23, lends her name to the brand that’s now soaring highest.

While the cider is available locally at Horrock’s, Siciliano’s Market, larger retailers and local restaurants, it can also be ordered online through VinoShipper for fans outside the state.

a wood-fired oven made from imported double-zero flour. On my visit, I ordered New Zealand lamb chops while my friend had the elk, and we shared a variety of apps, including saganaki and shrimp scampi. We finished with seasonal desserts. While every bite was excellent, the true showstoppers were the cocktails and the shrimp—moments that leave a lasting impression and make the journey worthwhile.

A Great Lakes a-fish-ianado

Entrepreneur gets hooked on the tinned fish trend

When Jenison native Melissa Fellows moved to Boston, she found herself surrounded by tinned fish. “It was on every menu—wine bars, bodegas, picnic baskets,” she says. “You could choose by region—Portugal, Spain, Norway, Maine. But there was nothing from the Great Lakes. I remember saying out loud, ‘Why don’t we have this?’”

Years later, that question became her business. Fellows launched Great Lakes Tinned Fish in November 2024, the first Midwest-based tinned fish company sourcing exclusively 68

from the Great Lakes. Her signature product—cold-smoked whitefish, offered in original, garlic-shallot, and soon lemondill—celebrates both the tradition and innovation of products from Michigan’s legendary waters.

“I cold smoke because it’s delicate and mild,” she says. “It reminds people of those summer vacations up north.” Working with longtime fisheries like VanLandschoot & Sons in Munising, she’s helping to keep Michigan’s commercial fishing industry viaible—and visble.

Planning her brand took her as far as Lisbon, where she witnessed centuries of canning perfected. “There, tinned fish isn’t a trend—it’s a time-honored process,” Fellows says. “Seeing that staying power made me realize this could work at home.”

The business has grown quickly—150 stores in 25 states within its first year. “It’s been a wild year,” she says. “I’ve been so fortunate to have people in the fishing and food community open their doors and share advice.”

For Fellows, the mission runs deeper than business. Ninety percent of fish consumed in Michigan is imported, and she’s proud to be part of the movement changing that. “It’s about pride in place,” she says. “Knowing where your food comes from.”
