Lakeshore trails that fly under the radar

Open space is a true joy, and West Michigan is blessed with lots of it. But sometimes, on hot, summer days, sunny beaches and dunes can feel too open. Into each life a little shade should fall.

You may have explored the lakeshore’s stellar large parks, traversing shaded trails in Hoffmaster State Park, Saugatuck Dunes State Park and the like.

Here, we’ll introduce you to some of their diminutive cousins. Scattered around the lakeshore in small towns are municipal and county parks where huge trees shade trails, cool rivers flow, or trails atop dunes get hikers up into the breeze-off-the-biglake stratosphere. You may know of others. Talk them up and invite your friends! These refreshing retreats deserve just as much love as their big-name counterparts.

Some trails described below are in communities too small for a post office, so USPS street addresses use an adjacent town’s name. The “GPS address” will get you there.

To autumn hikers, a reminder channeling our moms and dads: remember to wear bright colors! Deer hunting season starts October 1. On the brighter side, some of the parking fees end Labor Day weekend.

North Ottawa Dunes, Ferrysburg

Enter and park at Coast Guard Park, 18161 North Shore Rd. Easy to strenuous hiking South of Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, what looks on a Google map like a tiny blip is actually close to 600 acres of massive, forested dunes. They stretch for a third of a mile along Lake Michigan. A 10-mile trail network links the peaceful, secluded wilderness to Hoffmaster and, to the south, Ottawa Sands Park. Some of the packed trails are a workout, but many are easy to conquer.

Rosy Mound Natural Area, Grand Haven

It’s a favorite spot of ambitious hikers who happily scale staircase after staircase over its tree-covered high dunes to reach the beach or a trail loop that hooks north. But there’s another option: where the handicap accessible main trail divides about a quarter mile from the parking lot, the Acorn Trail offers an accessible path through ground level pine forest. Signage at trail marker 2 guides the way.

Pigeon Creek Park, Olive Township

GPS address: 12524 Stanton St., West Olive Easy to moderate hiking Winter sports are the claim to fame of this county park east of US-31. But its 10 miles of cross-country ski trails welcome hikers spring, summer, and fall. (Two maps are posted online, for skiers and off-season hikers.) Deciduous trees shade many trails, along with aged pines dating from the site’s lumbering days. Stanton Street bisects the park, so leave your car at a lot in the middle and choose a southern or northern trail loop. Major ones range from 1.7 to 2.8 miles.

Muskegon State Park

The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park, located within the state park, provides unique winter activities like luge, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, as well as summer options such as zip-lining and archery. The park is a year-round destination for outdoor adventure. There is an Olympian-designed luge track open to the public for use.

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park Address: 6585 Lake Harbor Rd, Norton Shore Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, P.J. Hoffmaster State Park features a 1.5-mile-long beach, dense forest, and several hiking trails. The park also has campgrounds and a visitor center at Gillette Sand Dune.

Activities include hiking, picnicking, wildlife watching, and beach recreation. The park is an ideal spot for nature lovers and beachgoers alike..

Norman F. Kruse Park Norman F. Kruse Park is a 52-acre Lake Michigan park featuring a scenic beach with expansive views of the shoreline. A designated section of the northern beach welcomes dogs and their owners, making it a popular spot for pet-friendly outings. The park also offers picnic areas, nature trails, dune overlooks, and recreational amenities for a mix of outdoor experiences.

Duck Lake State Park 4733 N Scenic Dr, Whitehall Duck Lake State Park spans 728 acres along the shores of Lake Michigan and Duck Lake. The park features scenic hiking trails, sandy beaches, and a large sand dune, making it a popular spot for swimming, fishing, picnicking, and hiking. The Scenic Drive in the park forms part of the Shoreline Trail, providing picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.

Saugatuck Dunes State Park

Bass River State Recreation Area

6575 138th Ave, Holland Saugatuck Dunes State Park covers 1,000 acres and features 2.5 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, coastal dunes, forests, and 13 miles of hiking trails. The park is known for its peaceful, less-crowded beach experience and rare plant species found in the Patty Birkholz Natural Area. Activities include hiking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing in the winter.

Caledonia Lakeside Park 6281 147th Ave, Caledonia Caledonia Lakeside Park offers 1,500 feet of lakefront on Emmons Lake, providing a visually impressive and sizable recreational space. Fisk Knob Park 2533 Fisk Rd, Alto Fisk Knob Park is known for having the highest point of elevation in Kent County at 1,072 feet. Provin Trails Park 4770 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood Provin Trails Park is part of a larger network of trails and green spaces in Kentwood. The extensive trail system makes it a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a variety of experiences in the city.

Seidman Park 3333 Parnell Ave NE, Ada Seidman Park is located in Ada Township and is part of the North Country Trail system. This park offers scenic views and hiking trails that range from easy to moderate. It's a great spot for anyone looking to explore nature while staying close to Grand Rapids.

Calvin College Ecosystem Preserve 1790 E Beltline Ave SE, Grand Rapids The Calvin College Ecosystem Preserve is a 100-acre natural area offering a network of easy trails for walking, birding and exploring nature. Top Courses to Check Out This Season

Thornapple Pointe Golf Club in Kent County, Mich., is a scenic 18-hole, 7,040-yard, par72 course set along the Thornapple River.

While Michigan winters can be a drag for avid golfers, when spring rolls around, the Mitten State continues to shine as a haven for golfers.

Michigan is in the top five for most golf courses in the country with more than 850, and many of them are stationed in the western half of the state, including a huge portion within a quick drive from downtown Grand Rapids.

Nationwide, golf participation has grown for seven straight years, surpassing 28 million golfers in 2024, an increase of 1.5 million golfers, the largest single-season increase since 2000, according to the National Golf Foundation. And Grand Rapids is no different, with area clubs hitting record membership levels.

From the prestigious private country clubs in the Grand Rapids area to some of the premier public courses, there are plenty of options for golfers at any level of handicap.

There’s a long, rich history of golf history in Grand Rapids, starting with Kent Country Club, which dates back to 1896 when it was called Grand Rapids Golf Course on the shores of Fisk Lake in East Grand Rapids. It moved to its current location along Plainfield Avenue in 1901 and remains one of the oldest country clubs in the the country.

There are three other private country clubs that are the cream of the crop in the Grand Rapids area: Blythefield Country Club, Cascade Hills Country Club and Egypt Valley Country Club.

The history even extends to municipal courses, like the City of Grand Rapids’s Indian Trails Golf Club, 2776 Kalamazoo Ave SE, which opened up in 1928 and nears its centennial. While it’s course is perfect for beginners and high-handicappers, the driving range and free-to-use pitching and putting greens make it a great destination for golfers of all abilities looking to hone their games.

Staying true to the public municipal courses, Kent County’s Kaufman Golf Course, 4807 Clyde Park Ave. in Wyoming, which like Indian Trails plays great for golfers of all levels and is maintained meticulously for a publicly-owned course. It, too, has a driving range for the public.

Both Indian Trails and Kaufman offer in-reason rates of under $50 for 18 holes and a cart and $25 for nine.

Another Grand Rapids gem of a course open to the public is Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The gorgeous course offers a challenging mix of holes and landscapes for golfers of all types. A round of 18 with a cart can be hand for under $50 if you start after 3 p.m. on a weekend, but other times are under $70.

Boulder Creek Golf Club’s proximity to Blythefield can make it seem like it plays above its weight as well, especially the weekend the country club hosts the Meijer LPGA Classic, which returns to Blythefield hosts for the 11th year in a row this year.

Boulder Creek also has a decent restaurant attached for some solid 19th hole enjoyment.

For those who are avid golfers in the area, they’d be remiss not to visit the trio of Mike DeVries-designed courses: The Mines, Diamond Springs and Pilgrim’s Run. The Mines is 26

in extreme proximity to downtown at 330 Covell Ave. SW, and is a fantastic afternoon escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown. The course is extremely hilly and can be a tough walk.

Diamond Springs and Pilgrim’s Run are a bit of a drive, Hamilton and Pierson, respectively, but Pilgrim’s Run especially is worth the 30-minute drive as it might be the best public course in the area.

For golfers who want the luxury of a country club membership but might want to play an array of courses is the Redwater Group, which includes Watermark Country Club, Macatawa Golf Club, Muskegon Country Club, Stonewater Country Club, Sunnybrook Country Club, Thousand Oaks Golf Club. The group also includes the fantastic courses Thornapple Pointe and Ravines Golf Club and nine restaurants around the area.

Although another bit of a drive from downtown, Saskatoon Golf Club in Alto is a mega bargain with 45 holes in five ninehole configurations.

There’s also The Meadows, Grand Valley State University’s course. With a collegiate team playing there, it is a solid challenge for golfers and always well-manicured for a decent price.

Beyond those, there is a plethora of golf courses within an hour of downtown Grand Rapids, and plenty more beautiful course if the option is there. Like the beauty of Michigan in general, the amazing golf courses of Grand Rapids are a hidden gem.

A championship weekend

In June, the LPGA brings the Meijer LPGA Classic back to West Michigan for the 11th year in a row at Blythefield Country Club.

The week-long event begins Monday, June 9, withe the first practice rounds.

Wendesday is a Pro-Am before the course opens up to the public to attend the actual tournament from Thursday to Sunday.

Tickets are available for as low as $10 per day, or a $25 tournament-long pass.

Founded in 2014, the tournament provides West Michiganders the ability to watch world-class golf in the pristine setting of Blythefield. The tournament has maintained a commitment to being an affordable attraction for West Michigan families, from the low-priced tickets to affordable concession products.

And those looking to watch incredible golf are not to be disappointed. A $3 million purse attracts a field of the best-of-the-best women golfers, like Lexi Thompson and Lilia Vu, former LPGA Player of the Year.

The Breakers at Summit Church, West Olive

McGraft Park, Muskegon At first glance, McGraft appears to be an easy urbanstyle course — but after hole 8, many parts play through dense thickets and wet lowlands and lack appropriate signage. (A printable course map is accessible on the park website, or use the Udisc app.)

This course offers a diverse disc golf experience unlike any other if you’re up for a bushwhacking challenge.

Ross Park, Norton Shores With a wooded front 10, featuring concrete tee pads and easy to follow signage, Ross Park is a perfect course for beginners. The throws are not too challenging or long, and the course runs right along the public beach on Mona Lake, so this is a great destination for the whole family. 20 holes.

Winstrom plays almost exclusively through young maple forest and tight wooded fairways, so be ready to throw some control shots on this one. The well-maintained course is frequented by families and offers long and short tees for players of all skill levels.

It does not get especially mucky or overgrown like some others on this list, which makes it great to play year-round. 18 holes.

Frugthaven Farm

Filled with water hazards, lengthy fairways, and dense foliage, Paw Paw is a gorgeous park best suited for advanced players. The course near the Holland-Zeeland town line plays through an old ball-golf course, so most of your shots will be around lightly forested meadows. Aim to play this one earlier in the season before peak summer bloom; the course is not mowed, so the foliage gets dense and hides discs.

Shore Acres Disc Golf Course, Laketown Township Saving the best for last: Shore Acres is the only 24-hole course on this list and offers two basket layouts and spectacular disc golf along Michigan sand dunes. The course in Shore Acres Township Park (behind the Felt Mansion at the southeast corner of Saugatuck Dunes State Park) plays through sandy coastal forest with plenty of elevation changes and diverse shot shapes. It’s very close to the shore, so to cool off after your round, consider taking one of the shady paths west to Lake Michigan for a dip.

Yes we CANNABIS I smoked, dabbed, and ate a lot of product from Grand Rapids’ only 100% locally owned cannabis provisioning center, Pharmhouse Wellness. Here are my favorites.

I employed the most exacting and scientific modalities, mostly involving smoking copious amounts of cannabis, getting lost on walks to my friend’s house and watching Netflix while stuffing my face.

Located on the far west end of Wealthy St., Pharmhouse Wellness offers ordering online for curbside pick-up and a delivery service for medical cannabis products with limited store hours for in-store shopping. I found the staff at Pharmhouse to be very knowledgeable, capable of helping a cannabis connoisseur or someone new to cannabis.

Selections at Pharmhouse are carefully curated, rather than bought in bulk, which allows the dispensary to offer high dose products at an affordable price. According to Pharmhouse staff, “as a former caregiver, and believer in the medicinal use of cannabis, our owner is very aware of the medicinal properties of cannabis and offers discounts for medical cannabis card holders.” Pharmhouse is one of the few dispensaries who continue to hold a medical cannabis license and offer delivery for medical card holders.

When asked what makes Pharmhouse different, the budtender explained, “Pharmhouse’s community involvement, product offerings, and attention to the needs of individual customers, set us apart from larger dispensaries who may not focus so much on those things.”

Snoochie Boochies presented by Jay and silent Bob, powered by Cavi Mike Of all the concentrates, flower and edibles I’ve tried, this infused Pre-Roll by Caviar Gold – a sativa dominant hybrid, was by far my favorite and the most potent.

Caviar Gold infuses cannabis through a proprietary system where 95% pure liquid THC is infused inside high-potency strains, raising the THC content to 41.6% (and higher) to create ‘super weed.’ The sativa buds are dipped in hash oil, rolled in kief, made into pre-rolls and then dipped again in THC oil, because, why not?

Given the level of potency, one pre-roll lasts a very long time. In moderate doses, you’ll feel energized and in love with the world as sativa is a definite mood elevator.

Because of its intense effect and extreme potency, even the most seasoned cannabis user should use caution. I found myself talking to a friend about licking toads while marveling at the beauty of nature and got lost walking to a friend’s house I’ve been to one hundred times. When you smoke a product created in partnership with Jay and Silent Bob, prepare to be “snooched.”

potent than most with a rich, earthy musk smell. I found myself relaxed, while not couch locked, with a cerebral high. The high lasts a long time and due to the potent nature, novice users should judiciously control their dosage as a large dose may cause paranoia and fatigue.

After a few hits I cleaned the refrigerator, and the cupboards have never been so organized. I also noticed some relief from overworked, sore muscles.

Then I lost my keys.

Don’t worry, they were in my front pocket.

Other dispensaries: This is not an exhaustive list, but rather a list of places that I tried, and in no particular order:

Olswell

Located at 1940 28th St. SE, Olswell is situated at the entrance of a residential neighborhood in what was formerly a doctor’s office. The building has since been updated with a sleek, modern look.

A black brick exterior carries over into a clean, well-lit interior. Set just far enough back from nearby 28th street, the location feels very private, and quiet. The building’s resemblance to a townhome distinguishes Olswell from other retail provisioning centers.

The herbal coaches at Olswell seemed very knowledgeable and are required to take classes and be trained on the health aspects, various components of cannabis (e.g., CBD, CBG, terpenes, THC, etc.), differences in manufacture, absorption and more. The overall ambience of the experience felt more customer focused than transaction focused.

My friend, who has rarely tried cannabis, appreciated the recommendations and generous amount of time the herbal coaches spent with us in explaining different products, and identifying low dose edibles for her.

While I’ve found most pricing to be somewhat comparable from shop to shop, you’ll find plentiful discounts, and deals available at Olswell. Products range from vapes, edibles, to flower, tinctures and topicals. You can also pick up items designed to help your pet.

Whether you are well versed in the sin spinach or only somewhat familiar with all the new products coming into the cannabis space, Olswell, on 28th St. is worth a gander.

Nature’s ReLeaf

On the northwest side, Nature’s ReLeaf, located on Leonard next to Shakedown Street, might be a good place to check out. Nature ReLeaf’s storefront brings an updated, trendy appeal to the neighborhood, and its location next to Shakedown Street fits right in. The storefront looks like a modern retail facility, however it is a family-owned dispensary.

Justin, a budtender at ReLeaf, explained how staff “takes pride in taking as much time as necessary to help customers individually.”

This provisioning center feels very secure. Customers present their ID through bullet proof glass to an associate and are then permitted to enter the interior retail space accessed through a secure door.

My friend who is a very infrequent cannabis user, was impressed by our budtender’s knowledge in explaining different products, their effects, what to try, and what to watch out for. She appreciated his recommendation in suggesting a low dose edible with a mixture of CBD and THC, and if concerned with being “too high” (as can happen with some edibles) taking CBD, which lessens the effects of the THC. If you find yourself on the northwest side and want to check out the funky fern, ReLeaf might be the right option for you.

Skymint

Located on Division Ave. just south of 28th St., Skymint is the largest dispensary business in Michigan, with 24 locations throughout the state. Skymint offers the typical features one would expect from a retail dispensary, where IDs are checked, followed by entry to the shopping area where products are displayed.

Skymint’s approach differs from other provisioning centers in a few ways. The retail area is very well thought out and has the feel of a boutique with an open floor plan. Skymint does product placement very well. All products and pricing are clearly listed, displayed and easy to understand.

Where choices can seem endless and a little overwhelming at other centers, items at Skymint are so carefully laid out, they require little guidance or explanation.

If you are someone who would rather search out the magic dragon on your own (with an associate close by when needed), you might stop in and see what Skymint has to offer.

Gage

Located on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, close by the IMAX and Celebration Cinema, Gage has the look and feel of a typical retail chain. Gage is a multi-state operator based out of Toronto, Canada, with outlets across the US. We were able to move through the process very quickly at Gage and ended up picking up a low dose cannabis infused beverage that we hadn’t seen before.

Now that you have a little better idea what to expect, time for both the courageously canna–curious or timidly intrepid canna– connoisseur to venture forth.

Fear no longer, go ahead and check out the wide array of ganja, seek out a “medible” to munch, try some of the funky fern, dip into the dope, mine for the green gold, procure whatever variety wacky tobacky, Indian hay, magic dragon, or sin spinach you’re cannacurious about and discover which provisioning center is right for you.

n Grand Rapids, festivals aren’t just dates on a calendar—they’re a rhythm the city moves to. And if anyone knows that rhythm by heart, it’s Evette Pittman, manager of the City’s Office of Special Events. Her team helps shepherd hundreds of happenings each year, from cultural celebrations to community gatherings. “It always puts a smile on my face when I see people out in the community having a good time enjoying their community,” said Pittman. It’s a fitting note to begin with—because in Grand Rapids, festivals are part of the city’s identity.

Below is a season-by-season look at the festivals that shape Grand Rapids, followed by a second section devoted to the satellite towns whose celebrations round out West Michigan’s full festival year.

SPRING Cinco de Mayo (Grand Rapids) Usually held in early May at Rosa Parks Circle, this inaugural celebration from the Mexican Heritage Association of West Michigan centers on heritage, food, music, and a mole-making competition inspired by Puebla’s culinary tradition. Expect family activities, crafts, and a lively cultural showcase.
