Check out Javier Perés’ fist solo show at the Grimmuseum in Berlin It’s about time we get to see Javier Perés’ own art! Everyone in the art world is talking about it! The Grimmuseum, Berlin, presents “One of ours”, the first solo exhibition of the Berlin/Los Angles based, Cuban born artist, gallerist and writer, Javier Perés. If anyone knows contemporary art it’s Perés, a man already highly respected in the industry for his ability to make superstars of the artists he chooses to represent. His artist roster includes or has included among others, assume vivid astro focus, Terence Koh, Kirstine Roepstorff, Dan Colen, Joe Bradley, Mark Titchner, Agathe Snow, Mark Flood and the late Dash Snow. With “One of ours”, Perés expands his trajectory in the contemporary art field and presents himself as a practicing artist. Perés´ primary artistic concern is that of memory – both his own personal memories, and what he deems to be the collective memories and concerns of his generation. Rio and Too many Rivers (all works 2011) are two series’ of paintings depicting the iconic actor River Phoenix. Phoenix, who died in 1993 at the young age of 23, serves as both the inspiration and focus of all of Perés´ recent works. Perés approaches the image of a young River, with his bleached out platinum hair, as if he were a saint, a martyr of his day and time. In the Rio series he depicts Phoenix in the same manner, changing only the background image and colors. In the Too many Rivers series he depicts the young actor in different poses taken from publicity images found on the Internet – the repository and increasingly the source of our collective memories. Phoenix, still rocking the same platinum blonde hair, is presented in different aspects from a confident young man to a shy and vulnerable persona, less at ease with the viewer’s gaze and the public´s interest in his private life. River was our James Dean and Perés’ work clearly expresses that and explores the connection between art, artist, icon, and saint all one. I feel Javier captures the freedom that River possessed and presents him in a very approachable way, the way he made you feel in his films…like he was a friend, not an inaccessible movie star. I am also a huge River Phoenix fan and I remember clearly the second I heard that he had overdosed in 1993… it was early in the morning. I was deeply saddened because he was my favorite actor and because some of his films had really affected the way I perceived life and the decisions I made in it. “One of ours” opens on January 12th and runs through

February 5th. It should be an exciting show and I regret that it won’t be in NYC where I could view the work in person. Javier Perés (b. 1972, Havana) is best known for his work as an art dealer and gallerist with Perés Projects, the art gallery he founded in 2002. Perés obtained a Bachelors of Arts degree with Honors from the School of International Service at The American University, Washington, D.C.; and a Juris Doctorate degree from The George Washington University School of Law. In addition to his education in diplomacy and law, Perés has studied art history and art practice throughout his life without pursuing formal degrees in either field. His foray into art making first became known to the general public with the self-published ‘zine cum art book, DADDY, the magazine which he published quarterly from 2007 to 2009. Perés currently also serves as the Arts Editor at GQ Style (UK). He lives and works in Berlin while still maintaining close ties to Los Angeles. Jamie Martinez

Wild Painting Donnerstag 08.September 2011 in Talk of the town Credit: Post-war and Contemporary (Ingvild Hovland Kaldal and Alfred Boman) © Laura Gianetti Somebody shot the exhibition’s text with an arrow. It is now stuck to the wall. This archaic gesture marks the entrance to Grimmuseum’s new show. In fact, the works of the Norwegian artist Ingvild Hovland Kaldal and Städel student Alfred Boman that curator Jonatan Ahlm Brenander has gathered here are quite wild. Kaldal’s pieces and found objects sport a mostly arte povera like look, while Boman’s colourful paintings and installations mix colours and shapes of all kinds. Remains this odd vague feeling of familiarity to resolve. It is part of the concept: The show is entitled “Postwar and Contemporary” and asks itself what art of this era needs to be like. In the curator’s opinion, a “hermaphroditic union” of opposites. The result is a crazy show with archaic and hippie like elements – a real feast for the eyes of those who are fed up with minimalism, impalpable and wild like its thematic focus. In Grimmuseum, the show has found a perfect host. This turn of the century apartment ensemble is itself a union of just about everything possible in a project space: a non commercial platform for visual, performance and sound art, interdisciplinary, experimental, and run solely by artists parallel to their own artistic production under the direction of Enrico Centonze. Since the beginning of 2010, Grimmuseum has organized interesting events like listening salons, performance dinners, and hosted several “pigs” events (an independent art space guide launched in June 2010 by Grimm co initiator Despina Stokou) like speed portfolio viewings and curators’ battles. This week Grimmuseum hosts FITAX1500, an art tradeshow without the involvement of money in cooperation with the Dutch artist group Tupajumi Foundation. Art pieces with an approximate value of 1500 Euros can be traded this Sunday after prior registration. A perfect opportunity for those looking for “an alternative way of wheeling and dealing art during the artfair week” – or for those who are unhappy with their buys on other fairs. Post-war and Contemporary is on view until Sept. 18th. FITAX1500 works are on view starting today and will be traded on Sept. 11th.

The Curators Battle I – Chan vs. Moulton On Saturday night the arty scene and expat crowd of Berlin gathered around at the Grimmmuseum in Kreuzberg to take part inthe first „Curatos Battle“. Aaron Moulton and Carson Chan got in the ring and let their audiencedecide whose show they liked best. Each curator had to work with the same eight artist (Marco Bruzzone, Constance Dullaart, Kinga Kielczynska, Darri Lorenzen, Benja Sachau, Timur Si-Qin, Ignaco Uriarte, Jorinde Voigt), and gave their best to create the most convincing and approachable show. We started at the backroom with Carson Chan’s show „ Stronger Magic“. Carson tried to make one show look like two, by switching between light and darkness, to express the part virtual, part real nature of today’s world. Next we went to have a look at Aaron Moulton’s „A Choreographed Coincident“, but not after waiting in line for a good 10 minutes. Moulton’s more classical approach could not hold up with Chan’s, who was crowned the winner of the event after the polling had closed at 11pm sharp. The two shows are up until April 17 2011. Auf mediale ART: Florian Feigl im Grimmuseum Eine Eieruhr, Klebepunkte, Goldsprühfarbe, ein Plasitiktier und ein Schlauchboot. Diese Utensilien und sechs Episoden à 300 Sekunden brauchte der Performancekünstler Florian Feigl gestern Abend, um sein Publikum im Grimmmuseum zu (unter) halten. von Thea Dymke (11.03.2011) Das ist er also, der Künstler der uns durch den Abend führen soll: ein schlaksiger Mann, auf der Nase eine überdimensionale Brille, am Körper einen Nadelstreifenanzug tragend. Ungewöhnlich ordentlich für einen Künstler an diesem Ort in ähhhm, natürlich es ist mal wieder Kreuzkölln. Feigl hat für den heutigen Abend sechs Performances von jeweils 300 Sekunden angekündigt, die gemeinsam mit anderen zu einer Videoarbeit von 24 Stunden zusammengefügt werden sollen (die Redakteurin hat dies nicht ganz genau nachgerechnet). Das Experiment „24hour video 300“ ist also das Ziel vor Augen, die stattfindenden Performances sein notwendiger Prolog. Ein bisschen so fühlt sich dieser Abend auch an. Feigl begrüsst seine Gäste, zieht die Eieruhr auf, um sie kurz gut sichtbar in die Höhe zu strecken. Dann beginnt er zu springen. Wieder und wieder und wieder. In der Hand jedes Mal einen neuen kleinen Klebepunkt, den er mittels körpereigener Sprungkraft an die Wand befördert. Vor den Augen der Besucher lässt er so eine Kontur aus Klebepunkten an der Wand entstehen. Während die Punkte immer mehr werden, wird Feigels Energie sichtbar weniger. Die Eieruhr, Richtmaß des Geschehens, hingegen demonstriert kraftvoll die unterschätzte Länge von 300 Sekunden. Schließlich klingelt sie doch noch und der Künstler zieht mit seinem Publikum zur nächsten Wand. - Wieder Klebepunkte, dieses mal in Kreisform. Es folgen das Schütteln einer Sprühdose und anschließendes Sprühen von Goldlack. Den sorgsam eingesprühten Plastikeimer hält Feigl zu Beginn noch in den Händen, dann geduldig über seinen Kopf, während der Lack zäh auf Haare und Anzug tropft.Sein ordentliches Erscheinungsbild ist spätestens jetzt endgültig dahin. Recht so. Auf die Performance „Animal Instructor“ folgt schleßlich das “lickpiece”. Es ist die sechste und somit letzte Performance des Abends und der Punkt, an dem sich das Publikum spätestens fragt, was es davon eigentlich lernen soll. Während die auf Video aufgezeichneten lickpieces Toastbrote oder Fahrräder in den Mittelpunkt stellen (siehe Foto), beginnt Feigl an dieser Stelle ein Schlauchboot mit seiner Zunge zu erforschen. bungsvoll leckt er das Boot ab, lutscht an seinen Konturen, zieht Kreise auf dem Gummi. Die meisten Besucher schauen noch immer zu... Warum sind Zuschauer bei Live Performances eigentlich so viel geduldiger, als bei Videoarbeiten? Das dokumentarische Filmmaterial älterer Performances von Feigl erfährt nur kurz die ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit seiner Zuschauer. Nach wenigen Minuten wenden sich die Besucher hier meist mit einem leicht verständnislosen Blick ab. Feigl selbst untersucht einerseits den inflationären Gebrauch des Performancebegriffs. (Denn ebenso wie heute jeder Künstler ist, ist auch alles irgendwie Performance, sei es Klebepunktspringen oder Schlauchbootlecken.) Andererseits kann die Arbeit die Frage nach den unterschiedlichen Aufmerksamkeitsspannen in Abhängigkeit der Kunstform, sprich des Mediums aufwerfen. Während einer Liveperformance das Feld zu räumen erfordert zugegebenermaßen mehr Mut, als einem Video den Rücken zuzukehren, wenn man wörtlich ‘genug gesehen’ hat. Doch ist das Erklärung genug? Der Charakter der ‘Liveness’ ist wohl auch das Spannendste an diesem Abend. Die teils gebannten, teils belustigten Gesichter der Zuschauer, der Erschöpfungsgrad des Florian Feigl. Die Absurdität des Geschehens in all seiner Gesamtheit wird gerade durch mühevoll-konzentriertes-Kunst-rezipieren noch verstärkt. Ob Feigl diesen eigentlich interessanten Aspekt seiner Arbeit auf Video festhalten und transportieren kann, ist jedoch fraglich. Sringen, Sprühen und Lecken allein hätten den Abend nicht tragen können.
