LATIN CATHOLIC HEIRARCHY IN KERALA (O.C Vincent I.A.S (Rtd)) th

History of Latin Catholics in Kerala begins by 13 century. The strongholds of the community are the coastal belt and the adjoining areas. Population of Latins in Kerala is over 20 lakhs.

Realising that education is a basic requirement for the development of the community, the early missionaries and the Church authorities who succeeded them bestowed special attention on establishing educational institutions. Now there are hundreds of colleges including professional colleges and schools and many prestigious hospitals run by the community.

Majority of the Latins are economically backward and therefore the community has been classified as Other Backward Community for educational and employment reservation. But despite the general backwardness of the community, many of its members have achieved recognition in all fields like politics, arts and literature, medicine, education, judiciary, bureaucracy etc. This may be due to the contributions of the Church, especially the early missionaries in the field of education, agitations for share in Government service by community leaders of Travancore and Cochin states early in the last century and their encouragement and the determined efforts of the individuals themselves. However, the number of big business tycoons in the community is very small.

The Latin Catholic Hierarchy in Kerala consists of two provinces, namely Thiruvananthapuram and Varapuzha and the two Archdioceses and the ten dioceses under them.

PROVINCES OF THIRUVANATHAPURAM 1. Metropolitan Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram This diocese was formed in 1937 with areas from old Kollam and Cochin diocese. Some coastal parishes were retained in Cochin diocese. In 1955 these areas were also merged in Thiruvananthapuram diocese. The extent of the diocese is 686 square kilometres .

Patron saint is St Teresa of Child Jesus.

Madre de deus church at Vettukad is a major pilgrimage centre. St Joseph’s cathedral, Palayam Church also attracts devotees in large numbers.

Most Rev. Dr Soosa Pakyam who was appointed as Bishop in 1990 is continuing as Archbishop.

All Saints College ,St Xavier’s College, Holy Angels High School, St Joseph’s High School etc are some of the institutions in the diocese.

2. Neyyattinkara Diocese This diocese was established on 14.6.1996 by bifurcating Thiruvananthapuram diocese. It has an area of 1497 Sq. km. St Joseph of the Worker is the patron saint. Thekka Kurisumala in Neyyattinkara Taluk is an important pilgrimage centre.

Rt. Rev. Dr Vincent Samuel, the first bishop of the diocese is continuing.

3. Kollam Diocese th

Kollam is believed to be the oldest diocese in India. It was formed in 1329. For a period in 16 century it was under the Archbishop of Goa. The area of the diocese is 1950 sq.km. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the patron saint. Bishop Jerome Maria Fernandez became the first native bishop of the diocese in 1938.Bishop Joseph G Fernandez had contributed a lot to the development of the diocese. Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Roman is the present bishop.

Kottiyam Holy Cross Hospital, Benziger Hospital, and Bishop Jerome Engineering College are some of the famous institutions of the diocese.

4. Punalur Diocese This diocese was formed in 1985 bifurcating Kollam diocese, it comprises of Pathanamthitta district, kottarakkara, Kunnathur and Mavelikara Taluks and parts of Karunagappally and Chengannur Taluks. Its extent is 5052sq.km.The patron saint is St Teresa of Lisieux. Urukunnu Holy Cross pilgrimage Centre described as “Malayattor of the East” and St Jude pilgrimage centre at Maruthimoodu are the important pilgrimage centres within the diocese. Rt.Rev.Selviste Punnumuthan is the present bishop.

5. Alleppey Diocese This diocese was formed in 1952 by carving out the area south of Kuthiathodu from the Cochin diocese .Even now some parishes in Alleppey area are under the control of Cochin diocese and some parishes in Cochin area are under the jurisdiction of Alleppey diocese. The extent of the diocese is 333 sq.km.Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the principal Patron saint and St Joseph of the Worker is the Secondary Patron Saint.St Sebastian’s pilgrimage Centre in St Andrews Church, Arthunkal is attracting tens of thousands devotees. Mount Carmel Cathedral Alleppey is also a famous pilgrimage centre. St Michael’s College ,St Joseph’s College, Leo xiii high school etc. are some of the institutions in the diocese. Rt. Rev. Dr . Stephen Athipozhiyil is the present bishop.

PROVINCES OF VARAPUZHA Metropolitan Archdiocese of Varapuzha This Archdiocese is often called the mother of all dioceses in Kerala since at some point of time areas now forming part of most of the other dioceses’ were under this Archdiocese. Malabar Vicariate was established in 1659 with a bishop in Varapuzha. In 1845 this was divided into Mangalore, Varapuzha and Kollam Vicariates. In 1886 Varapuzha Vicariate was elevated as an Archdiocese. The name Varapuzha was retained ever after the headquarters was shifted to Ernakulam. The extent of the diocese is 1500sq.km,St Joseph is the Patron Saint. Most rev. Dr. Joseph Attipetty became the first native bishop in 1935.

He played a big part in developing the archdiocese to its present stature. Many of the important institutions existing today were started by him. Most Rev. Dr. Cornelius Elanjikal was another illustrious Archbishop. He was a great scholar. The devotional songs written by him are even now very popular. Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarackal is the present Archbishop. St Francis of Assisi Cathedral is famous for the novena of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour which attracts thousands of devotees every Saturday .Our Lady of Ransom Basilica at Vallarpadam is a National Pilgrimage Centre. Novena of St Antony at St Antony’s church is attended by thousands every Tuesday. St Jude’s novena at St Joseph’s church Thevara attracts a lot of devotees every Thursday.

The Archdiocese can boast of many prestigious institutions like St Albert’s College, Albertian Institute of Science and Technology ,Albertian Institute of Management, St Paul’s college, St Teresa’s College, St Xavier’s College, Lourdes Hospital, Lourdes College of Nursing ,Christhu Jayanthi Hospital, Perpetual Succour Hospital at Maradu etc.

2. Cochin Diocese When Goa diocese was formed in 1534, Cochin was included in its jurisdiction. Cochin diocese was established in 1557.Eastern and Southern regions of India, Burma and Ceylon were under the diocese. Many Churches and the Cathedrals were destroyed when the Dutch and the British attacked Cochin.

The extent of the diocese is 236 sq. km. Holy cross is the patron saint. The famous St Joseph’s pilgrimage centre in St Antony’s church th attracts thousands of devotees for the feast of St Joseph on 19 March every year. The Santa Cruz Basilica is famous for its architectural magnificence and beautiful paintings. St Sebastian’s church at Thoppumpadi is a protected archaeological monument.

The “Slanting Cross” at Mattanchery is also visited by large number of believers.

There is a well maintained museum in the Bishop’s house.

Cultes Hospital at Perumpadappu , Aquinas College at Edacochin, St Mary’s High School at Fort Cochin, Our Lady’s School at Thoppumpady and St Peter’s High School at Kumbalanghy are some of the institutions of the diocese. Rt. Rev. Dr. Alexander Edezhath was the first native bishop of the diocese. Rt. Rev. Dr Joseph Kariyil is the present bishop.

3. Vijayapuram Diocese This diocese was formed in 1930 with the south-eastern areas of Varapuzha Archdiocese. It covers and extent of 8499 sq.km in Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alleppey and Ernakulam districts. Most of the areas are hilly and backward. The Bishop’s house is in Kottayam.

Patron Saint of the diocese is Immaculate Heart of Mary. Dr Sebastian Thekethecheril is the present bishop. Vimalagiri Cathedral in Kottayam and Pattumala matha Church in Pambanar are famous Marian pilgrimage centres.

4. Kottappuram Diocese Kottappuram diocese was formed in 1987 bifurcating Varapuzha Archdiocese.The extent is 3300 Sq.km spread over Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts. St Thomas is the Patron Saint. Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph karikkassery is the present bishop.

St Michael’s Cathedral at kottappuram is famous for its historical heritage and architectural beauty. Our Lady of Snows Church at Pallipuram attracts a very large number of people for the St Mary’s feast in August. St Antony’s pilgrimage centre at Chettikkad also attracts a lot of devotees.

Don Bosco Hospital at Paravoor, Don Bosco Nursing School, Assisi Hospital at Thuruthippuram, Velankanni Matha Hospital at Pallippuram ,Home for the Aged, Home for the Mentally retarded and Physically Handicapped and orphanages are functioning under the diocese.

5. Sultanpet Diocese Sultanpet diocese was formed in 2013 with priests of Coimbatore and Calicut diocese in Palakkad district. The extent of the diocese is 4466 Sq. Km. There are 21 parishes and 21 schools in the diocese. St Sebastian’s Cathedral is located in this diocese .The first bishop of the diocese is Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Abir Antonisamy and still continuing.

6. Calicut Diocese This diocese was established in 1923; it has an extent of 12505 Sq.km in Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad districts. St Francis Xavier is the Patron Saint. Rt. Rev. Dr. Varghese Chakkalakal is the present bishop. Mother of God Cathedral at Calicut constructed in Gothic style is the headquarters of Latin Catholic congregation in the area. St Theresa’s church Mahe is an important pilgrimage th nd centre. Lakhs of devotees attend the annual feast from October 5 -22 .

7. Kannur Diocese This diocese was formed in 1998 taking out Kannur and Kasaragod districts from Calicut diocese. The extent of the diocese is 4988 Sq.Km. Rt. Rev. Dr Varghese Chakkalakal was the first bishop of the dicoese. Rt.Rev.Dr. Alex Vadakkumthala is the present bishop.
