LADBROKES SCOTTISH DERBY

Spy completes Scott

Holdem Spy gets the job done at Shawfield

L

adbrokes should be applauded, last year they stepped in to save this brilliant Derby competition but this year they took it to a new and exciting level. A ÂŁ17,500 first-prize was up for grabs and the brilliant finalists served up a cracker to wow greyhound fans worldwide. The big question who would go off favourite? Mind The Net for Ireland or Holdem Spy for Britain, in the end it was Holdem Spy and punters called it right when he put in a superb display to be crowned champion to the delight of his trainer Carol Weatherall. It was not only in the betting ring Mind The Net 5/2 and Holdem Spy 2/1F that did battle it unfolded into an epic battle between the two during the race. Mind The Net is the Tralee track-record holder and Pat Buckley must have thought he was set to win his second Scottish Derby when he made the corner in front, one quick glance back though spelled danger because Holdem Spy by his standards took an absolute flyer, one dog you did not want on your tail was the Spy. The two set about a real battle and around the third-bend Holdem Spy hit the front but you must credit Mind The Net he battled back so well but in the end Holdem Spy had done enough to win by a neck in 28.87 +40. Next stop Wimbledon for these two you would think but we must not forget about the other finalists Metro Jack, Toolatetosell, Jaytee Lightning and Calzaghe Jack all will surely no head to the capital full of confidence.

Holdem Spy wins the big race

CORAL GOLDEN SPRINT

Messi delivers Golde

Lough Messi in action

A

N £8,000 first-prize ensured like always a topclass entry at the Essex venue, the big names turned up but it was local trainer Maxine Locke who made sure this great prize was staying at home when she expertly guided Loch Messi to victory. Off the track since December Loch Messi looks to have come back better than ever, he was impressive on his return and then straight in to the action of the Golden Sprint he beat all in front of him with the style and manner of a greyhound that could be about to have a magical year. After heat and semi-final victories he was sent off the 11/8F his supporters raised the roof when he turned in

front but Mays Teejay 7/1 gave them a real scare when he put in a brilliant battling display but in the end Messi had just too much class and held on by a head in 23.95. Lough Messi will now surely head to Wimbledon and his blistering early-toe can serve the speedster well, I see no reason why he can’t go deep into the competition and once there anything can happen. His eleven UK starts have resulted in six victories and perhaps more important he has been in the first-three on eight occasions, a lot is made about his stamina but wins over in Ireland at Kilkenny suggest he may be capable of seeing out Wimbledon’s 480M course.

THE PINPOINT RECRUITMENT ARC

Dec is crowned King

Wonderful night at Swindon as Sky Sport

A

truly wonderful night from Swindon beamed out live on Sky-Sports and it was King Dec trained by Liz/Rab McNair that put in his best performance to date to win the £8,000 first-prize. Readers of the magazine will know that we put our faith in the McNairs’ youngster who ensured we never had an anxious moment. He was ready available at 10/1 in the morning but would be sent off at 8/1, within a matter of strides he looked an odds-on shot, catapulting out of the boxes he soared into a big lead, Islas Scolari tried hard to reel him in but at the line there was still 3L between them in a cracking time of 28.57. This was a night that the whole of Britain should be celebrating; King Dec is British bred and this was the McNair’s first category one success with a greyhound they have bred. It just shows that in Britain we may be short on numbers in breeding terms but we are most definitely not short in terms of quality. King Dec also ensured that Liz and Rab would leave Swindon with a nice double after earlier in the night Ballycannon Hope had scored in 29.12, the race was a bumpy ride but Hope showed plenty of guts and determination that will surely stand him in very good stead. Ian Aylward had no luck in the final with Sidaz Harris but he will surely have enjoyed the journey home after his Bailiff Turbo put in a hugely impressive performance winning a very hot puppy race in a fantastic 28.50. Hills quoted 200/1 immediately after the race but he was 150/1 in a matter of minutes for Derby glory.

LADBROKES TRAINERS’ CHAMPIONSH

P

aul Young came awfully close to landing the championship but to suffer late disappointment in the past but this time he would not be denied. Six trainer’s battled it out on a thrilling night after the first few races Charlie Lister OBE was 1/40 on for the title, Paul Young and Seamus Cahill battled back though and ensured it come down to the last race with all three still in the hunt for glory. The bookies sent off Droopys Odell the 7/4 favourite for Seamus Cahill with Jaytee Lightening a 5/2 shot and Redbrick Stuart 3/1 for Charlie Lister OBE. Three amazing trainers with three real quality greyhounds, it set it up for a remarkable finish. First-bend bumping which involved all six-greyhounds did little to settle the nerves, Jaytee Lightening though would come out triumphant to set up amazing celebration scenes. The runner up was

Droopys Odell who ran a huge race which resulted in a dead-heat for overall second spot between Seamus and Charlie. Nights like this live long in the memory banks, it was remarkable and greyhound fans saw it all unfold live on Sky-Sports/SIS, what a great advertisement for our wonderful sport.

GETTING TO KNOW THE STARS OF THE GAME

Meet the unsung heroes Up and down the country there is literally hundreds of unsung heroes in the sport of greyhound racing; kennel staff. This month I wanted to catch up with Rory Logan; assistant trainer to Dave Firmager who without question are real stars of the British Breeding Game!

Rory Logan Age: 34 Position: assistant trainer to Dave Firmager Best dog in kennel Romeo force. Best dog worked with: Romeo Expert, Romeo Recruit and Romeo Maldini. Greyhound currently racing who I would have in the kennel: Farloe Tango or Holdem Spy. Favourite track: Newcastle Stadium, proud Geordies and proper dog people. I have many fond memories growing up and going racing with my dad at Newcastle. Best thing about working in greyhounds: The sheer buzz and excitement of seeing your dog’s racing knowing the effort you put in and the many characters you meet when you go racing. What keeps you motivated: Seeing the pups we breed and the progress they make when racing. And hopefully one of them could be a right good greyhound. Fancy for this year’s derby: Swift Keith and Siderian blaze. What we feed: chudleys and laughing dog. Vitamins used: premarket products Advice you would give someone wanting to get into greyhounds: You must be 100 % committed and have a love of greyhounds. If you want to learn anything go

work for the top trainers they are not the best at what they do for nothing and can give you a great education. Music in the kennel: Dire straits Plan B chase n status, on the Radio, 1 or capital FM. Tell us something about you nobody

knows: I once auditioned for Byker Grove the same time Ant and Dec was there. Sadly wasn’t destined for TV stardom. What do you do to relax away from the dogs: Cinema, gym and going to watch Newcastle United play if and when I get the chance.

TRACKS OF A BYGONE ERA

Fond memories of Lo

O

ver the years many greyhound tracks that will be fondly remembered by a lot of readers have long since closed down. Some have been built upon whilst others still stand derelict as a reminder of the good times of the past. Each month I shall be taking a short look at one of these gone but not forgotten tracks. I’m starting this feature with Long Eaton. As with many of our tracks from the past, houses have now been built upon the land at Long Eaton where greyhounds once raced. The Long Eaton track on Station Rd held its first greyhound meeting on 7th April 1928 with the first ever race being won by Lady Jazz over 525yrds at a rewarding sp of 5/1.

Long Eaton originally had seven wooden grandstands, although the majority of these were destroyed by fire in 1948. That wasn’t to halt the success of Long Eaton as a thriving greyhound stadium however and the track was a thriving hotbed of greyhound racing in the UK until its final closure in 1997. The track was very successfully run by the Harnden family, led by Nottingham trainer Peter Harnden’s father Don from 1962 up until its eventual closure. The track was known as one of the fairest and indeed safest running tracks in the country, with owners and trainers travelling from many miles away to have a runner at the track. Indeed the great Paddy Sweeney would bring dogs which were recovering from

lameness to the track as they were on the road to recovery. A greyhound called Giant, trained by a legendary Derby winning trainer , held the sprint track record in a time of 1756. The time recorded by Giant was so fast that Don Harnden was left questioning whether it was the dog or the hare whose time had been recorded. With the dog also smashing the Derby track record the following week, any worries about the reliability of the Long Eaton timing system were laid to rest. The four bend track record was set by Sammy Boy in a time of 28.84. If any of you have any suggestions on tracks which you would like to see featured, please don’t hesitate to contact me at markpierrepont295@hotmail.com

Ran a fantastic race behind Redbrick Stuart in an open-race but next time out in A1 put in a sensational display, recording a 4.05 sectional, winning by 5L in 29.54. He looks a force in top grade and open events. ONE TO WATCH OUT FOR: Wendys Majorgaga, Aero Gaga – Wendys Fantasy, August 2012, trainer G Wilson. He burst on to the scene winning his firstthree starts (A7, A5 and A4) thirteen defeats later in a mixture of A2s and Open-races he is suggesting that he will be on the winner’s podium again before too long and looks capable of competing in puppy open-races.

Mark Wallis just keeps on churning out the winners and the leader is simply away and gone like many of his dogs have been this year!

MARK PIERREPONT

I’m excited about the Derby

T

he William Hill Greyhound Derby starts this month and as always it promises to be a competition full of excitement and no doubt one or two shocks along the way. One missed break or a bad draw can be enough to see the dreams and hard work of the past months go up in smoke. One set of connections however will see their dreams become reality at the end of May as their greyhound crosses the finishing line in front. The three runs in the space of a week between the third round and the semifinal provide a true test of both the durability of the greyhound in question and the training skills of the handler. Qualify through the semi-final stage and connections then have a week to prepare for the biggest night of their lives. So at this stage which dogs have been showing signs that 2014 could be their year? I’ll start with Sidaz Jack who won last year’s final as a raw novice. It was a brilliant effort by the dog and by his trainer Sir Charlie Lister to win the competition, this year however I’ll admit he’s not impressed me as much in his comeback trials and his handful of races since returning. He is definitely young enough to regain his crown but he will have to improve greatly upon what he’s done so far this season and for that reason I’m passing him over. The current ante post favourite is Kereight King trained in Ireland by Pat Curtin. Part owned by national hunt jockey Tony McCoy he is a dog who without doubt possesses the pace needed to win the derby and given a bit of luck along the way could definitely still be there with a chance come final night. Swift Keith, trained by John Mullins, is another runner who could go a long way. Keith has done little wrong in his career so far. Winning eight of his thirteen career

Sidaz Jack

starts and only once out of the first three home, he has terrific early pace and again deserves his place near the top of the betting. Sidarian Blaze is a novice with huge potential. Trained by Sir Charlie he couldn’t be in better hands as his connections yet again attempt to get their hands on the trophy at the end of the month. He was noted in my column after impressing Peter Harnden in trials at Nottingham before making his UK debut. I know Peter is carrying a decent ante post ticket at a big price with Blazes name on it so he will be hoping that this dog can go a long way.

Though he was beaten on his UK debut at Sheffield, Blaze soon showed what he could do with a scintillating 2815 derby trial stakes victory. He’s since ran a little below that level when finishing third in another derby trial stakes, that third place though shows that even if things don’t go to plan, he’ll not tamely fold away and that is a useful took to have in your armoury when attempting to qualify for the next round. Looking a little bit further down the list, at a dog that will not be a household name to many, is a dog called Salad Dodger. This dog first came to my attention

SALACRESRACINGTEAM.COM

when I got a call in November last year from Peter Harnden. Quickly he says put this dog in your notebook and make sure we know when it’s next running. A winner waiting to happen he said. At the time this dog had just been a very unlucky loser in an A6 at Romford. Next time out sure enough we had a decent bet on the dog and he popped out and ran away to an easy victory. It was obvious that Romford didn’t suit this dog though and despite winning a couple more times in A5 and then A4 he was sold to ex-Coventry trainer Bruno Berwick.

To be fair he’s one that slipped through the net because had I known he was for sale he’d he’d have been a very nice type for Nottingham. That case being proven when winning at Colwick Park recently in 2870 for the 480m trip. The week after that he headed to Wimbledon where he led on the run in to score in a more than decent 2843. Despite having a good bet , i’m now starting to wish i’d had a little bit more on in that Romford A6. This is a big step up in class for Bruno’s dog but he is a strong runner who never gives up and at 100/1 there are worse each way bets to reach the final.

We’ve had a busy month at Salacres Kennels. We’ve a few new pups that have just been purchased and we have also had the Kinloch Brae x Queen Of Rangers litter beginning their schooling trials. Initial reports are fairly promising , they’re all chasing anyway and as anybody who has ever been involved in a litter of pups will tell you , that’s an achievement in itself. Our younger litter by Shaneboy Lee x Salacres Polizzi continue to grow as each week goes by , they’re a lively bunch and are starting to develop into nice looking greyhounds. Our Salacres Tango who we’ve long since had down as a little bit of a favourite in the kennel due to his after you antics is starting to develop a little bit of a fan club. I believe a few people have been winning a few pound via the field x tango forecast recently so that’s pleasing. He’s not got a nasty bone in his body Tango but simply thinks it’s good manners to let one dog cross the finishing line before he does. Now and then he will fluke a win and when he does there’s simply no cheering the dog up all week. A couple of dogs from our kennel to follow would be Gortown Ben and Salacres Brent. Both of these dogs are coming back from injury and at the time of writing have both had one race back. Ben ran very well in defeat and shouldn’t be too long in winning whilst Brent won at the first time of asking. Both dogs had pretty serious injuries and have taken alot of treatment , care and patience to get them back to the track. Fingers crossed that they hold up to racing and if so they should get a win or two under their belts this summer. Until next month enjoy the derby and I hope you all back a few winners along the way. Don’t forget follow my thoughts on twitter @mark2013_efc and those of Peter Harnden @SALACRES

ASHLEIGH’S CORNER Nellys Manor

Nellys Manor

I’m sure everyone has had that one greyhound which will forever have a place in your heart. For me she was a white and black 92 whelp (Manorland x Rour Lady) called Nellys Manor, this lovely lady was my sixth birthday present from my Grandad. I can still recall that moment when my Grandad walked her onto the patio, handed me her leader and said Happy Birthday. From that moment on i enjoyed countless happy memories with Nelly. There was nothing i enjoyed more than getting her ready for racing, grooming, rubbing her down and packing my own race bag. I can still remember the feeling of heading to the track with my Grandad, i always had butterflys in my stomach. Even at such a young age I never missed a race meeting, I was so insistant on going racing that when our dogs were running we always had early races to accomodate my bedtime. The feeling you get when your dog crosses the line first is something that cannot be described, i can always remember having

no voice for a day or two after her races due to shouting her home, everytime without fail. She enjoyed a successful race career on the independant circuit, and once her race career was over she made a wondeful companion pet for me. We enjoyed many happy years together, my whole childhood revolved around her, sadly I lost her when I was 16, ten years of my life gone in an instant and its something I will never forget, she will forever be in my heart. I have been brought up in the greyhound racing industry, i credit my family with my love of the game, but its thanks to Nelly i have chose the career which i have. Greyhounds like her are one in a million and can never be replaced, she will forever hold a special place in my heart.

NeuroHounds

I have had the privilege in participating in the ground breaking NeuroHounds research project. Sadly this six week pilot project has recently come to an end, it has been a huge eye opener for me. I have witnessed the clients improve with small eve-

ryday tasks which we all take for granted like lifting a cup and watched the relationships develop with Indy & Paddy and their own clients. The project has drew media attention from Metro Radio, ITV News and the Chronicle newspaper, all of which their coverage has come out excellent. My sister Amanda and myself would like to thank Neural Pathways & Keiro Group for involving us in the project.

Indy & Paddy The NeuroHounds

Indy belongs to my sister and Paddy belongs to my Dad and Grandad. Without these two Greyhounds i doubt the NeuroHounds project would have been successful as it has been. I do hope that from the project peoples perception of the Greyhound on a whole can be changed if even just a little bit. They are not just money making speed machines as the uneducated public see them, they are a wonderfully diverse breed suitable for people from all walks of life. I cannot speak highly enough of the breed.

It’s been a rollercoaster!

T

o say the last few weeks have been a roller coaster ride for the syndicates would be an understatement, but does show what the game is all about, you ride the highs and take the lows on the chin. The Widow has failed to add to her very impressive strike rate , but has been running against some very good dogs in A2’s at Newcastle which is a very tough grade, and Floss was ticking over nicely until her last run at Romford where for some reason and not shown it before , she interfered with another dog on the run in. I watched the race many times and it is not visible to the naked eye, but after watching the race in very slow motion, for a split second she whispers sweet nothings in another dogs ear. and got her card marked, which was a massive blow to all the members as she had served us so well. However Floss is now having clearing trials and hopefully it was a one off and she will soon be back on the track. As if the week could get any worse Wilburn had to be withdrawn coughing on her debut, another blow and she had to re-trial. On the upward curve we have purchased four June 13 Westmead Hawk pups out of Jenna’s Pony a 115 rated bitch who went under the magical 24 second barrier at Romford, bred by Chris Allsopp they are all looking fine and can be found under the syndicates for sale page on www.armchairowners.com they would make ideal Father’s day present’s. Pieman has started her trials at Hove and is progressing nicely, and BOOOOMMMMM Wilburn eventually makes her debut on 18th April on RPGTV and what a debut it was, she smashed out and then jinked to the right but still led at the bend and despite moving off a couple of times they couldn’t catch her winning in 28.47 a very impressive debut. This month I would like to introduce David Valder who has a facebook page I

Mileheight Alba

LOVE HOVE GREYHOUNDS , which must be the most in depth stats for dogs that run at Hove. David takes up the story. I first went to Hove dogs in 1974, friends were going but I’d never even heard about greyhound racing. I got hooked straight away! Back then it was only twice a week 8 races in the winter, 3 times the rest of the year. A lovely all grass track, which could get 150slow over the 500m My fav dog was a brother to the great

Wembley bitch WESTPARK MUSTARD who won 20 races in a row, called WESTPARK ONION who was the local champ over 670m In January 1975 the brilliant GLIN BRIDGE ran his first race, winning from T1 over 670m on 260s- wide runners had won easy all night. I later see GLIN BRIDGE beat WESTPARK MUSTARD over 655m at Wembley. I never missed a single meeting at Hove for 15 years- but I also loved going to Wembley for the opens and often went. I got to see 16 St Leger events.

I got a real thrill seeing Hove dogs win there, with the great GEORGE CURTIS, there wasn’t long to wait for a winner! Hove changed a lot in 1980. A new restaurant had been built and the distances were also being changed. I was told it was so them in the restaurant would get a better view of the winning line.( No TV screens back then) 500m became 515m 670m became 695m With the new distances, I started to note the fastest HOVE dogs over each trip. This started at 20.. Soon got to 50...

and then 100 Finding it interesting, I’ve been doing ever since then! So I now have.. 100 FASTEST OVER 285m - under 16.40 100 FASTEST OVER 475m - under 28.00 100 FASTEST OVER 515H - under 31.05. 300. FASTEST OVER 695m - under 41.75. 650+ FASTEST OVER 515m - under 30.01. 100 FASTEST OVER 740m - under

45.00. 20 FASTEST OVER 930m - under 58.00. Though I’ve been going to the dogs for 40 years, I’ve never owned one! A few reasons for this. I dare say cost came into it, but if I did own a greyhound, I would want it as a pet after, and that wasn’t possible for a few reasons. Also, I don’t drive, and I’m a good 12 miles from the nearest kennels at Allbourne, so getting up to see the dog wouldn’t be easy. Outside of the track, I only see dogs being walked in the street. This year however, I decided to get a share in ARMCHAIR PIEMAN, an Oct 12 bitch puppy by MOTTOS MARK. She’s only had 2 solo trials to date with today’s 31.90 on -10 near grading time, and is sure to find more over the weeks. She should be on the card by the end of May all being well. I think syndicates are the way to go nowadays with money being tight, I’ve an interest in a local runner for £80 with next to nothing on any kennel bills. As it happens, I’ve only recently been able to watch RPGTV and INFORMATION TV works for me, so it’s good if I can’t get to Hove on a Thursday. Thanks for that David and your comprehensive stats are interesting reading. With the £200,000 William Hill Derby just about to start, I have pitched three against the field at fancy prices, so hopefully get one through to the final. Holdem Spy, very impressive Scottish Derby Winner. Jordans Brianna, who’s explosive early pace should serve him well. Mileheight Alba , another blessed with early pace and could be out and gone. Good luck everybody with your derby bets , on paper it looks ultra-competitive, and with the track already on fire, a wager on a new track record is advisable. Best regards and be lucky Mark Whittaker

IAN BLAND: OUR INSIDE MAN AT CRAYFORD

Latest news from Crayford L ast month’s tutorial produced a nice winner during April namely Quivers Mac who romped home at odds of 5-1 so as suggested now that he has won wait for the dog to now drop back down a grade before re-investing. My other selection Cape Dance failed narrowly to make it a double when finishing second. It was a winning debut here recently for Coin And Banter trained by Barry O’Sullivan. Clearly the local bookmakers were fully aware of the dogs ability as they sent her off as the 5-2 favourite in the Open race which she won comfortably by two and a half lengths. The dog has had previous race experience at Hove however she had only managed one win in eighteen previous starts and on paper it would appear that the 515 metres that she had been running over there may have been a touch too short. Our 540 metres here seem to suit her much better and she now looks set to figure in future open races at Crayford so it will be interesting to see how she runs but early signs look promising. My local tip for the Owners Bonus Final here in mid April Never Mind Eh did not run well finishing in last position! Such is the tipping game and I would be the first to tell you that there is no such thing as a cert in racing. Starting at a very short price of 5-4 favourite nothing went right for the dog on the night as she was crowded at both the first and third bends and bumped on the run in but on the positive side the winner Stamford Molly, who I know was purchased for less than £200, romped home to land the £500 winners prize. She is a decent little dog and has always given the impression that there was a big win to be had from her. This victory would suggest that there is more to come form her. Going back to Never Mind Eh I am of the opinion that the dog has ability having raced in top grades at Romford previously and it would seem that with her it is either

trap out in front and win or miss the break and do very little. Expect a win when she gets her trapping right.

Nellie’s a marathon girl

Everyone loves the longer races and here at Crayford our marathon races are run over 714 metres and invariably produce exciting finishes. Nellie Attack trained by Patsy Cusack has been catching the eye recently having finished second in her debut race over this trip on 22 April when beaten by just over a length by top dog Stunning Harvey followed by a win a week later. In her latest marathon race she won again against some decent opposition and this victory will have enhanced her growing reputation. She has the necessary speed over the first half of the race to put herself in a handy position and she looks even stronger during the second half of the race. Early days for the two year old pup but if she continues to improve she looks like a potential entry for the tracks big race next February The Ladbrokes Golden Jacket. Patsy Cusack knows what it takes to win

the Jacket having won with Walk The Line in 2007 and it would so nice to think that we might again have a greyhound that could make it a home win as there have not been too many such is the class of the entrants from far and wide.

Hurdling Holloway

I have to admit that I have never been a great fan of hurdle races albeit they are exciting when good hurdlers are involved. At Crayford we have a regular visiting trainer in Ricky Holloway who is always keen to enter his jumping stars into our Saturday night Open races. Clearly Ricky loves his jumping stars and has a strong hand with the likes of Mo Realta Frank and Soviet Military amongst others and they have certainly been performing well against the Crayford stars such as Lollylips, Saleen Tompajoe and the much improved Luminous. The participation of Ricky’s greyhounds has definitely added to the quality of our hurdle events and has even caught my imagination over recent months so credit where credit is due to Ricky and his dogs and long may the ongoing contest last between us versus Ricky’s dogs over the sticks on a Saturday evening.
