WELCOME TO GREYHOUND EXPRESS Editor Mick Livesey

Sport Springs into action

Get in touch: greyhounds2008@live.co.uk or Twitter @micklivesey Welcome to the April edition of the magazine!

S

pring is finally here; without question my favourite season, we can wave bye bye to Winter and look forward to better conditions, amazing races but this year it feels even more special than usual. The William Derby is a little over a month away: £200,000 winner’s prize, Champion v Champion, England v Ireland and Bookmaker v Punter. This will be the greatest competition we have ever seen; in next month’s magazine we go Derby crazy and trust

me it must not be missed. Over the last month there have been plenty of ‘WOW’ moments: Farloe Tango. Cornamaddy Jumbo, Droopys Odell and the youngster Farloe Nutter are among the greyhounds that made me say wow in March. You can read all about them and more in this issue. We of course preview the action: Coral Regency and Pinpoint Recruitment Arc are two competitions I am especially looking forward to starting in April. The most used words in greyhounds in the last month have been ‘Deloitte Report’ you can read it at www.gbgb.

org.uk all I am going to say on this is good luck to the GBGB let’s hope it allows positive negotiations in addressing the voluntary levy contributions. I think we all will have to be patient, it will involve a lot of jaw jaw and that is the way forward definitely not war war. A fantastic move by BAGS racing they now include replays of the brilliant competition action check them out at www.bagsracing.com this is a huge step forward and let’s hope it is just the beginning and others follow suit. ithout doubt one of the real highlights in the calendar for the six-bend performers, you look at the previous winners and it is enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up — this year will be no different it’s going to be very special. Farloe Tango is the one everyone will have to beat, I find it difficult to not envisage the champion having this competition among his schedule, if he turns up it will put the fear of god into the opposition. He was a run-away winner of the Ballyreagan Bob Memorial over course and distance; during his puppy career he beat none other than Ballymac Eske over 515m to record 29.50 +10. He will however have to at his brilliant best but he is surely the bench mark all the others must aim at. Musical Gaga recorded the quickest time

over 695m last year, she’s been on a break but if recapturing the form that saw her lift the TV Trophy and Select Stayers Trophies last year she could give any greyhound a run for their money. Defending champion and Tango’s kennel-mate Fear Emoski must come into the reckoning. The new kid on the block Killieford Toast is looking an exceptional prospect for Ted Soppitt, they’ve already

said they are going to have a crack at this competition and make the long journey South from their North-East base. He is the one for me if you’re looking for an each-way punt, he is so strong it’s very hard to imagine him not qualifying. It’s going to be a cracker that much is for sure — catch the brilliant final live on Sky-Sports and the heats on Racing Post Greyhounds TV channel 212.

L

ast year Rab and Liz McNair took this competition by storm, Shaneboy Alley was sensational and not only won this prestigious race but also took the track-record which was the icing on the cake. So I thought it best to catch up with Rab and ask him about his plans; “We are going to have a right good go at The Arc again this year, I’d love us to retain the trophy but it won’t be easy. We will head there with a strong team of at least four; King Dec, I think he could be the surprises package, he just seems to be getting better and better, if he leads I’d be confident they would not catch him, he reminds me of a real good dog we had in the past King Jaffa. Farloe Trent, he’s been there and done it all, it’s taken him a while to settle in but he’s a class act, come the first-round I think he

SWINDON King Dec (trap 4)

PINPOINT RECRUITMENT ARC should be in a position to show people what he can do. Ballycannon Hope, we landed a right touch on him at Wimbledon, this dog owes us nothing he’s already paid for himself three-times over in one race, anything now is a real bonus, we are over the moon with his debut for us and don’t see any reason why there is not more to come. Farley Chicken, very fast dog, he’s been off with a touch of the cough, will have a sprint trial at Wimbledon before heading to Swindon but again I’d not write him off. It’s very hard to pick one, it will be a team effort but we are confident of putting up a real fight to keep the trophy, if you forced me I would say King Dec only because I think he’s very under-estimated but it will be a team effort. I must say a big thank-you to everyone at Pinpoint its fantastic sponsorship once more and appreciated by everyone in the sport.” It’s going to be ultra-competitive and Swindon based Kevin Hutton will have a host of chances; Jet Stream Duke is on a great run banging in five wins including a track-record at Sittingbourne and perhaps is the dog for Team Hutton. Matt Dartnall is also a trainer that will be eager to perform well at on home soil, his early speedster Rewind Express probably is the kennels best chance, she is in great form having won at Sheffield and Wimbledon live on Sky-Sports, I’d not put anyone off having a few shekels on each-way.

Firmager is a Tru gent! 500M £2,500 FIRST-PRIZE FOR BRITISH BREDS HEATS – MON 31ST MARCH FINAL – SAT 5TH APRIL

B

ritish breeding is in a slump even the most positive person realises that something must be done. Top breeder and business man Dave Firmager is leading the way through sponsorship in the name of his company Tru Frame the brilliant windows and door specialists www.truframe.co.uk This competition for 18 greyhounds is a welcomed sight in the open-race calendar. The generosity from Dave Firmager is fantastic, he does not need to do this but chooses to try and help the sport – I personally think he should be rewarded sooner rather than later with a services to greyhound racing award!

May the Force be with you

Dave Firmager is the top breeder in this country and I am backing his Romeo Force each-way to go very well in this stake. He looks sure to be a player in all major British Bred stakes this year, no doubt he will have to step forward to beat Adageo Bob winner of the 2013 British Bred Stakes over course and distance. The youngster though looks to have the profile of being a big improver and I’d suggest once the produce stakes is out of the way his future will be over sixbends. Dave Firmager said: “I’d not feel comfortable if we won our own race but I have decided to enter runners and if we are lucky enough to win I will donate the prize-money to charity. Romeo Force is our best chance, he comes home very strong, Adageo Bob will take some beating and there will be other classy performers in attendance, we plan on enjoying the event and are extremely proud to sponsor this competition, good luck to everyone who enters.”

MARK PIERREPONT

ROBERTO DOES THE BUSINESS H

opefully a few of you took note of the high hopes we have for Salacres Roberto and backed him when he made a winning debut recently. It may only have been a D2 sprint but for any greyhound to win on their debut takes some doing. Roberto didn’t fly out the traps but he showed decent gears to the bend and once taking the lead he pulled away by an ever increasing 2 3/4 lengths in a time of 1829. His SP of 5/4 shows that we’d had a little bit of faith in him in the betting ring and a little win just made the victory that little bit sweeter. He’s since ran at Perry Barr in a puppy open but after missing the break and not really handling the track first time it was a race to forget. Keep him on side though, he has ability and will be a nice pup to follow over the summer. Salacres Louise is fast becoming a favourite in the kennel having made her way from A5 upto A1. Louise started off well when winning A5 last September but after taking a tumble not long after this she spent much of the winter on the treatment table. She’s since comeback and won A3 and a couple of A2 races, most notably an early pace always led victory on 3rd March when stopping the clock in 3021. This bitch has a nice touch of early pace and looks like she will be winning a few more, particularly when she gets a bit of sun on her back this summer. Keep Louise and of course her sister

Salacres Polizzi

Incredible Ruby (mentioned in earlier issue) in your notebooks. On the open racing scene there have been a few decent performances , Romeo Force has done me a couple of decent turns but when looking for a dog that will really excite people this year you can’t fail to have been impressed by recent trials from Sidarian Blaze. I know he’s a dog that has left a big impression on Peter Harnden and he really believes that this dog could be one of the leading dogs in the UK in

the months to come. Blaze is due to make his UK debut in the puppy race on Trainers Championship night at Sheffield and if his Nottingham sprint trials of 17.77 and 17.64 , along with his Sheffield 500m trial of 28.91 are anything to go by he should be a leading player. At the time of reading the result of that race will be known, but whatever his fate, it will not be long before he’s scorching around a track near you During the past few months I’ve kept you informed about the high hopes for the second litter of Queen Of Rangers and they will soon be commencing their schooling trials. Hopefully the dreams of the past year and more will turn to reality and we have a decent pup or two amongst them. We have another litter of pups on the ground too who also look nice types. The litter are sired by Shaneboy Lee and are out of a bitch who barring serious injury would have been ultratop class over 6 and 8 bends. Salacres Polizzi is the most honest and genuine bitch you could wish for and if her pups have just a fraction of her early ability and will to win then we’ll be more than pleased. Since the last issue the Pick 6 Jackpot bet had rolled up to a near £8000 at Nottingham. After a couple of failed attempts at landing it. myself and a few friends landed a share of the pool; not a life changing amount but nice to win all the same. Don’t forget follow my ramblings throughout the month on twitter @ mark2013_efc and those of Peter Harnden @SALACRES.

RESULTS: SPRINGBOK AND JUVENILE

Tango is the greatest greyhound of all time E

veryone who went through the turnstiles at Wimbledon or tuned in to the brilliant Sky Greyhounds programme on Sky Sports witnessed one of the most amazing performances ever delivered by a greyhound — that greyhound was Farloe Tango. I’m running out of superlatives to describe the amazing performances of this sensational greyhound. Turned over at Newcastle for his first run of the year the knives from the doubters came out of the kitchen draw sharper than ever before, he is not this, he is not that but what was ever so sweet that his band of loyal followers received the great reward of being able to back the champion at the price of 4/6 even the bookies started to doubt the great one. 4/6 may not seem very big but this was about the greyhound that not only won the St Leger over course and distance but also smashed the clock. Up against champions like Hometown Honey (Golden Jacket winner), Scala Dromin (Prestige winner) and three other very decent greyhounds to do what he did was nothing short of remarkable. He quite literally blew them away to score by an ever increasing 8.5L in 41.50 (just 0.10 off his own track-record) If there is a bigger draw in the sport today I’ve not seen them, Tango is the peoples champion, young and old love him, Tango has got people not necessarily fanatics talking about our wonderful sport, this can only be a good thing. People say to me ‘Did you not see Ballyreagan Bob or Scurlogue Champ?’ Yes of course I did but for me especially around Wimbledon Farloe Tango is the greatest! No other greyhound has ever touched my heart like him before; it is an honour and a pleasure to be plying my trade at the same time as this amazing greyhound.

Farloe Tango

WIMBLEDON Droopys Odell

RESULTS: SPRINGBOK AND JUVENILE Cornamaddy Jumbo wins the Springbok

WILLIAM HILL SPRINGBOK

Fantastic sponsorship from William Hill ensured the novice hurdlers were jumping in a bid to win the fantastic £5,000 1 first-prize. Cornamaddy Jumbo for Mark Wallis showed blistering pace to run away with the competition in a style that suggests this is only the beginning of a very exciting hurdle career. In the build-up the bookies and punters could not split Cornamaddy Jumbo and Razldazl Butch in the betting, in the end Jumbo was sent off the clear 11/8F with

Butch 13/8. The money proved right when lids opened and Jumbo clad in the stripes made an explosive start clocking a 4.88 sectional, all that separated him from the title was six hurdles, what was all the more impressive was he did not jump particularly well, he hit the first hurdle, crashed through the fourth but he showed frightening pace to score over Westmead Bertie 7/2 by 3L in 29.45. I think it was a vintage year for the Springbok Cornamaddy Jumbo is an obvious one to take out for all the big competitions later in the year but I would not write off Razldazl Butch, he is sure to have

better nights and the runner-up Westmead Bertie. These new stars will only enhance the hurdle scene and there promises to be some intriguing battles coming up!

RACING POST JUVENILE

Odell Keeps 400/1 Double Alive This race never fails to deliver something special, it’s an outstanding one off and once again it lived up to its billing in emphatic fashion. Seamus Cahill is one of the shrewdest judges around so when he placed £100 at 400/1 Droopys Odell would win the Juvenile and Derby double

WIMBLEDON Swift Keith

we should all have taken notice. The Nottingham Puppy Classic winner was sent off an easy to back 6/1, up against a topclass field that included Mileheight Alba (Laurels Winner), Vanrooney (Irish Puppy Derby Winner), Redbrick Stuart (Northern Puppy Derby Winner), Jaytee Lightning (Olympic Winner) and Adageo Bob (British Breeders Stake Winner) it was definitely a race of champions. The Seamus Cahill-trained Odell suffered crowding at the first-bend but he rallied taking it up at the fourth-bend he repelled the challenge of the Irish raider Vanrooney 5/2F to win by 0.5L with a fur-

ther 1.75L back to the third Redbrick Stuart 3/1 in 28.84 -10. Connections of Droopys Odell (and all of the other runners) will be dreaming of Derby glory when they line-up next month for the William Hill Derby worth a staggering £200,000 to the winner. The stats though are a little worrying 2009 winner Fear Zafonic came mighty close to pulling off this elusive double finishing second. Ayr Flyer in 1994 and Druids Johno in 1990 both came second, Fearless Action in 1986 came fourth these are about the closest over the years of pulling off this incred-

ible feat in the same year. If we look back to 1970 winner Dolores Rocket she came back and won the Derby a year later. Droopys Odell could be set to make history — can he do it? tweet @GhoundExpress and give us your thoughts! It was an amazing night — not only Farloe Tango, Cornamaddy Jumbo and Droopys Odell that had the wow factor. John Mullins sent out Swift Keith who recorded a blistering 28.22, John said ‘We will now head to Scotland for a crack at the Scottish Derby’ this was a mighty impressive run and Swift Keith is a greyhound that could be set to have a marvelous 2014. John’s started this year off with a bang and it continued here he also sent out top marathon performer Burgess Borna who won well in 56.27 to record her third victory of the year in front of the sky cameras. Liz and Rab McNair also got in on the double act sending out Wee Tiger Tots 16.19 Ballycannon Hope 28.54 both won impressively. The big story in the betting ring was Rewind Express, the best backed greyhound of the day, punters kept coming for her and she was eventually backed from 9/4 into 4/5F Express had punters jumping for joy with a polished trap to line victory in 28.51.

Farloe sends his fans nuts with Derby win F

riday 14th March is a day that will live long in the memory for the connections of Farloe Nutter; he entered the history books, wowed the crowd at the stadium and in bookmaker’s shops nationwide and not forgetting collected the fantastic winner’s prize of £12,500 put up by Ladbrokes. Sent off a 3/1 shot his supporters took in a deep breath when he had to ride a bump at the opening corner, he came out of it in front and roared into the second-bend and down the back, he was always going to be tough to beat from that point, you must credit Lemon Laveer 7/1 he put in his trade mark power packed finish but the champ had flown and there was still 0.75L in hand at the winning line in 28.18. Craig Dawson’s Farloe Nutter in just eight career starts in the UK he’s bagged over £15,000 in winners prize-money and it would be both brave and foolish to back against him adding more before the year is out. The next target will undoubtedly be chasing that amazing £200,000 winner’s purse for this year’s Derby starting in May. This competition throws up champions of the future, Lemon Laveer over sixbends in time could be a superstar, Jaytee China and Rio Quattro both losing finalists caught the eye. Greyhounds eliminated that went into the notebook; Scarface, Swift Suarez, Droopys Vela, Blue Moment and Droopys Norris are all worth following in the coming weeks and months. It was not all about the Puppy Derby; Ladbrokes put up some sensational money and turned this into a great festival. Cashen Maureen was very impressive in taking the £1,000 Ladies final in 28.25. Jazz Tilly turned over the 2/5 favourite Droopys Alder in the £5,000 630m contest in 37.85. The dogs’ final worth £1,000 was a cracker it ended up in a dead-heat with Lode Henry and Blackstone Marco sharing the spoils in 28.19.

MEET GREYHOUND RACING’S STARS

The unsung heroes behind the headlines Up and down the country there are hundreds of unsung heroes in greyhound racing — kennel staff. This month I wanted to catch up with two I have huge respect for. Gemma and Kelly both work for big kennels, both share a common trait — a huge passion for the sport of greyhound racing. They are both extremely hard working, super talented and a huge credit not only to the kennels they are attached to but the sport in general! Girls, everyone at Greyhound Express salutes you! Name: Gemma Byford Age: 26 Position: Assistant Trainer Best dog in the kennel: I would have to say Ballymac Marine, he’s back in training now and just starting trialling back. He gave us a great thrill when going unbeaten through the Puppy Cup at Romford, and we are looking forward to him competing again. The owners have been very patient with his lengthy lay off and we’re hopeful of an exciting year ahead with him. Best dog you’ve worked with: Ballymac Marine aside, Sizzlers Spirit was a special dog to me. I’ve always liked hurdlers but he never knew he was beat! He was one of those dogs who when you took him racing you felt he would always have a chance of winning. My favourite moments with him were probably the back to back Sky wins at Sittingbourne and Hove, both occasions off the last bend I thought he couldn’t possibly win but somehow he got up! He also held the clock at Sittingbourne for a while. He was one half of the amazing night we had on Derby semi-final night where he won his Champion Hurdle heat and Cloheena Cash gave us the best buzz of our lives reaching the Derby final, that was a magic moment. They are both still at the kennels and rule the roost! Which greyhound currently racing would you like in the kennel: I really like Swift Keith. He’s got awesome early pace and looks tailor made for Wimbledon, definitely a dog that can get to the business end of the Derby. Favourite track and why: Hove is my favourite track, obviously it’s where we are based

now and we are very settled there. It’s a brilliant test of a dog with a chance to grade your dog over 3 different trips, which gives plenty of variety for owners and race goers. The stadium itself is always very well kept and presented. I will always have a soft spot for the ‘old Wimbledon’ I loved it there. I used to go from a very young age and its where my mum and dad met so things would of been vastly different without it! Best thing about working in the greyhound industry: That’s got to be the dogs themselves. They become part of your family, and there is nothing better than being greeted with happy faces and wagging tails each morning! They are such loving animals and the pride you feel each time you get a winner never goes away. What keeps you motivated: Each dog is very different and it’s a great feeling when you know you have got to the bottom of a dog and got to know its likes and dislikes and have got the dog winning. Whether the dog is A11 or in Opens it feels just as rewarding. Will we see you at Wimbledon for £200,000 William Hill Derby, if we will who should we watch out for: I certainly hope so! All being well we should have three competing in the Derby Ballymac Marine, Glenvale Stevie and Viscount Rambler. All have been off over the winter for different reasons and are all now making comebacks. Glenvale Stevie has got excellent early pace, he has mainly been campaigned over Hove’s 285m trip but should be able to handle the 480m trip well. Viscount Rambler has run in good company in Ireland, he won an Open for us at Sit-

tingbourne back in October last year and will hopefully go well. What do you feed: We feed brown bread with raw beef. We also have a copper each day with chicken, pork or beef cooking with plenty of vegetables, which makes into a lovely stock which seems to go down well with all the dogs. Do you use any vitamins: We use SA-37 daily which gives the dogs a range of vitamins in one and helps with their general well-being. What’s your favourite piece of equipment: We find that the Niagara therapy canissage machine works very well on the dogs. What advice would you give someone wanting to get involved in the industry: There’s no better way to learn than being hands on with the dogs themselves. I would suggest finding and getting in contact with kennels local to you. Possibly see if you can start by walking some dogs and get to know them and help with their day to day care and training. What music do you listen to in the kennels: We have our music on fairly quiet so unfortunately for the dogs, possibly all they can hear is our attempts to sing along!! Tell us something about you that nobody knows: Well not a lot of people will know that my Mums waters broke while pregnant with me, working for Norah at Wimbledon! Fortunately she managed to get to hospital in time though! What do you like to do away from dogs to relax: I have two retired dogs at home to look after, I like the odd night out which isn’t always so relaxing! I like to spend time with my family on my days off my nephew Sebastian and niece Phoebe keep me busy!

GEMMA BYFORD Gemma Byford (right)

KELLY GUTTERIDGE

Name : Kelly Gutteridge Age: 34 Position: Kennel hand (David Mullins) Best Dog in kennel: Bonamassa Rocks Best Dog you’re worked with: Barnfield on Air and Bonamassa Rocks Which greyhound currently racing would you like in the kennel: Rio Quattro exciting looking pup that has everything early, middle and stays. Favourite track and why: Romford this Is a track very close to my heart this is where I got the bug for greyhound racing as a young girl and where I first ever worked with the greyhounds as a parader before

starting work with Linda Jones as a kennel hand. What keeps you motivated: The dogs keep me motivated, it’s amazing to work with them and no better feeling than see them progress. What do you feed: We feed Gain and raw meat. Do you use any vitamins: No we don’t use any, they get a balanced diet and get everything they need through that. Favourite piece of equipment: The dogs are lol plus the gallop its great seeing the dogs go up the gallop at pace. What advice would you give someone

wanting to get involved in the industry: that’s a hard question to answer I wouldn’t know what advice really to give cos it’s a hard industry to be getting involved with at the minute but I would have to say work hard and keep going and hope things look up. What music do you listen to in the kennel: We have Heart on radio. Tell us something about you nobody knows: I’m a secret Doncaster Rovers fan. What do you like to do away from dogs to relax: I enjoy going to watch my nephew play rugby and also play a nice round of golf and watching football.

able, even if the wheels fall off (there is no sign of this happening) then with the kennel strength points will always be picked up. Craig Dawson and Elaine Parker have started the year in exciting fashion, they will be dreaming of a top six finish, they both have very talented kennels and with a bit of luck they can maintain the pace, Farloe Nutter (Dawson) and Pay Freeze (Parker) are both Derby hopefuls, a big run in the premier classic and that top-six slot may become a reality. The same can be said for Ricky Holloway, he will be loving this what a great start to the year it for him, Westmead Meteor will be a big point scorer for him in all hurdle compe-

titions. Kevin Hutton narrowly missed out last year but he will be hopeful of breaking into the qualifying positions this year, he’s some talented greyhounds and will give it a big fight that is for sure. No Lister OBE, Young or Draper in the top-six at this stage and although they have huge talent in their kennels, I can’t see them coming from this far back to claim the top spot. Realistically the main threat to Wallis is Seamus Cahill, you will remember he was the each-way tip in the magazine, so far so good but I honestly think the championship in terms of an outright contest is over. I can never ever remember thinking that in March!

There is no doubt in my mind clocking times like this The Big Fellow is more than capable of winning an open-race especially a maiden somewhere. ONE TO WATCH OUT FOR: Greatexpectation, (Hondo Black – Mays Little Gem, July 2012), Trainer: D Cooper This puppy caught the eye winning back to back races before being beaten by dog of the month The Big fellow, for a puppy though to be clocking 29.80 at Doncaster is a very encouraging sight. He looks more than capable of winning puppy open-races and is definitely a greyhound worth watching out for.

ell what a hectic few weeks we have had at Armchairowners, Besides Floss winning an A5 and then an A3 at Romford which brings her strike rate to 30%, and the Widow also not to be outdone wins an A4 and follows up with a P1 win at Newcastle and a very impressive 33% strike rate and still never been out of the frame. And what a night we had on the 22nd March having our first Double up with both bitches winning. Wilburn has now had all her qualifying trials and is ready to race at Sunderland, and our new acquisition Pieman has now arrived at Seamus Cahill’s kennels and will begin trialling shortly. Armchairowners also stepped in to save the day when the RPGTV pup which was auctioned on the show, looked to be heading for disaster as the top bidder was unable to complete the transaction. Luckily members rallied round and we secured the deal, the pup will be called Armchair Rgeetee and we also have his sister Armchair Isadora, exciting times ahead. See www.armchairowners.com for full details. UNSUNG HEROES This month’s focus is on one of the many unsung heroes of the sport which without their tireless hard work and long hours the sport could not survive. 42 year old Lee Dangerfield his wife Sarah and three children all play a major part in the running of Ernie Gaskin’s Winston Farm kennel’s, I visited Lee at the kennel’s a short while ago which brought back many happy memories, as I used to have dog’s with Ernie senior in the late nineties and was a regular Sunday morning visitor to Winston Farm. Lee’s history is steeped in greyhound racing, as a boy his parent’s used to have dog’s with Graham Sharp and Lee would spend many a night at Walthamstow watching his parent’s dogs run. Lee started off at Winston Farm five years ago working two days a week, but through his devotion and hard work became full time, and in 2013 was runner up in “kennelhand of the year” a great

Dower Matt

achievement and an award which Lee is very proud of. His work has also not gone unnoticed by Lee’s Gaffer Ernie Gaskin and has promoted Lee to be the kennels assistant trainer, a position which Lee and his family are very proud of. Besides his achievements at Winston Farm, Lee is also the owner of Shaneboy Allen and is delighted with the dog’s numerous win’s graded and open racing. But Lee does have a soft spot for Keith Rudman’s Dower Matt, a dog that ran up a great sequence earlier in the year and is now coming back gradually for a crack at the Wimbledon Derby, where his electric early pace should serve him well.

Well done to Lee and all the other kennelhands throughout the country, for keeping our great sport ticking over. My dog to follow this month is Jaytee China a june 2012 daughter of Ace Hi Rumble x Droopys Geneva, she ran with absolute credit throughout the recent Monmore Puppy Derby, and will be a real force to be reckoned with in all the forthcoming bitches events this year And carrying the mighty Jaytee prefix she is surely going to be a superstar. Good luck everybody and hope you find plenty of winners. Mark Whittaker

H

ere at Newcastle we are very fortunate to have a great set of trainers who almost all breed their own greyhounds. A stand out litter of late to me has been the Stuart Ray June 2012 Droopys Scolari x Blackhouse Molly. The sire needs no introduction and the dam enjoyed successful career completing a total of 111 races totting up 30 wins along the way. This litter has all made the grade here at Newcastle. The standout pup of the litter has to be Mollys Reggie. This big black lad has impressed since schooling. Going straight in at A3 on his race debut here back in November 2013 and then went on to go straight up to the top grade. In March this year he took home the trophy from The Owners Bonus Series Final A1 in 28.93, but it was his run in the semi-final which really put this pup on the map, rocketing out of the boxes and scorching home to take the win by 1 1/4L in a phenomenal 28.55. Stuart then introduced the pup to the open race scene at Nottingham, and on his debt shared the winning honours with Westmead Clover.

We have just had our third therapy session, its hard to decipher who enjoys it more the greyhounds or the clients. and ran her 100th race on Saturday 22nd I know I shouldn’t have favourites, but March, she shows no signs of stopping, the there is one little bitch that I absolutely August 2009 whelp of Hondo Black x Baby adore at the track. She is with Tom Edgar Marge is still going strong. She is one of

those greyhounds that stands out a mile to me, she may not be top grade but what she may lack in pace she sure makes up for it in personality.

IAN BLAND: OUR INSIDE MAN AT CRAYFORD

Use trump cards to land pot H aving watched greyhound racing for the last forty years perhaps the two most important facts that I have learnt when selecting dogs is that you must never forget that “luck is temporary, class is permanent” and also that the Racing Manager knows no more about the runners than you, providing you do your homework and follow the cards on a regular basis. Certainly like all sports luck will always play a big part in the outcome of a race and in addition you know that the Racing Office will have dealt for themselves a strong hand when grading a race card but this does not necessarily mean that they hold all of the aces. Numerically and percentage wise they have the better hand so accept this as the situation and use the trump cards you hold to land the pot. In essence you must use what you know to be factual to your advantage and never be put off a greyhound because of a bookmaker’s price because as you know full well they do not get the result right in every race. All tracks use a “grading system” which should correctly be considered as an aid that you can use to your advantage because greyhounds are graded in accordance with their current form rather than in accordance with their full range of known ability. The Racing Manager is obliged to grade a dog on the basis of how it is performing at the moment but the dog may well have had better results in the past and won in either a higher or lower grade so at any given time there are always dogs on the card that are in “incorrect” grades. With the above in mind you are therefore more likely to get a winner when this situation applies as was the case recently when two greyhounds with known ability won for no other reason than to my mind they were in amongst weaker company than they would normally race against. Ryves Rock won at odds of 5-1 whilst Leamaneigh Mick scored at 6-1. The former is a dog that has done it all before and has won plenty of top grade A1 races as was the case here. No doubt there was a concern that he would not get to the first bend in front given

the early pace in the field, hence that starting price, however he did and won as I expected he would. Similarly Mick was in grade A4 having previously won in grade A2 and having also competed at A1 level in the past. Both dogs may not have been racing to their full potential recently but it just shows that the ability remains and can be used in your favour. So tutorial over let me point you in the direction of a few greyhounds that are likely to win in certain grades, but remember to check those grades before investing. Quivers Mac is currently racing in grade A3 here over 380 metres and his first effort at this level saw him finish last but take note that prior to this he had won in grades from A7 up to A4 so the dog if continuing to finish down the field will be dropped to a winning grade. He would be a decent bet in an A4 race and an even safer one in an A5 event. Similarly Cape Dance trained by Julie Luckhurst currently finds himself in A4 races but as recently ago as last November he

was competing in A2 events. Whilst the dog failed to win either an A2 or A3 race he took no time in winning when dropped to his current grade and after a recent A5 victory finds himself now back in a grade in which he is more than capable of winning in. Both dogs are running well enough to suggest they are worthy of note. One more thing to remember and note is that the Racing Office will tend more often than not to over grade dogs in their debut races. Borne in part out of not knowing a newcomers full potential, having had only their grading in trials as a guide, it is nonetheless a fact that a very decent percentage of debutants win early on. From the last 60 dogs to grade on at Crayford no fewer than 23 won either at the first or second attempt and six of those won twice in their first month. It seems to be one of those ongoing statistics at tracks but as they say “it is the early bird that catches the worm” and there seems to be plenty of rich pickings to be had if you follow the trend.

DAN ERRIDGE: OUR MAN ON THE SOUTH COAST HIS GREAT BLOG: GHOUNDTIPS1982.BLOGSPOT.CO.UK

It’s getting hot at Hove H I guys. I was away last month due to family commitments, but I’m glad to be back this month with my column. There has been some good quality racing at Hove over the last month, including none other than the most exciting dog in training, Farloe Tango. Having some races at Hove to get his eye in for a tilt at the Regency in April, He picked up Universal Dream on the run in, after checking at the drop and finding a bit of trouble to stride away and win going away to the pickup. He is going to take the beating in the Regency whatever dogs turn up, He for me is what greyhound racing is all about, power, pace and edge of your seat stuff as he weaves his way through fields. Would you bet against him for the Regency? One dog that caught my eye with a very impressive win in a Hove open was London Grammar, he showed some nice pace up, but really opened up off the second bend to win by some 8.25 lengths. The opposition might not have been amazing but to the eye he could not have been more impressive and looks a dog to follow to me. Zenas Boy also seems to have returned to something like his old self since returning to his beloved Hove winning two opens in 16.24 and 16.43, in the second of those two wins he beat a dog called Montis Buster who to looks a smart dog in the making and will be winning opens soon enough. Another dog that has impressed has been a dog called Your Decision, trained by Paul Garland. Clocking some very useful two bend times, he was stepped up to the 515m trip, which some people though was crazy, but if you indeed look through his Irish card you could see he had already won over four bend trips. He won his maiden open then an A1 515m race, but then stepped up again to win a 515m open in 29.91 clocking a flying 4.06 sectional. This dog has bundles of early pace and although he wins over 515 at Hove, I really think he could be an even bet-

Zenas Boy

ter dog when tackling 480m trips at other tracks. I would like to pass on my best wishes for the connections of Tap And Go, who was in the process of running another fantastic race on rpgtv the other Thursday night, only to go wrong at the last bend when looking to be holding Millwards Teddy ( ex Droopys Vela). I hope it was nothing to serious and that we see Tap And Go back on the track soon as he was shaping up into a very nice prospect for Ken Tester. I would expect to see some top quality 695m races at Hove in the coming weeks, leading up to the Regency in April. This could be a fantastic competition if all the stayers turn up, I would hope to see the likes of Hometown Honey, Farloe Tango

and of course the defending champion Fear Emoski along with a lot of other top stayers. A young pup that has caught my eye in recent weeks, from the Dean Childs kennel goes by the name of Droopys Cottage, this young pup has caught the eye on more than one occasion finishing like a steam train and when stepped up in trip could be a real top prospect. For me if Tango turns up for the Regency, he wins it! Although it won’t be easy, he for me is something out of the ordinary and should be celebrated as he is what this fantastic sport is all about, opinions! And everyone certainly has their opinions about Tango! Although there is no denying in full flight he quite simply is an aeroplane!

ANDY TOMLINSON: THE FLAPPING MAN

New King at the Palace

Every month Andy ‘Flapping’ Tomlinson brings you the news from the Flapping Scene It has finally been confirmed that Easington Greyhound Stadium has a new Promoter. Mr Steven Bailey of Hartlepool is the new man in charge, he has years of experience from helping out at Easington in the past and also at Harlepool Greyhound Stadium which is now closed. He takes control of all aspects of the stadium and racing duties, which include re-furbishing inside the bar/cafe area, resanding the track and also the daunting job of doing the handicapping.

Us regulars at the track have been hearing these rumours for weeks now but are over the moon with the outcome as the track has been on the verge of closing, former promoter Joe Atkinson had lost the support of the majority of the Easington faithfull after a series of mechanical faults with the hare and traps and some bias handicapping. The stadium will be closed until early April whilst the upgrades are made. The running surface has been made priority, 200 tons of sand will be here this weekend then its all hands to the pump for the locals that have volunteered to help lay the sand, once the sand is laid and a much needed lick of paint has been applied we can all start looking forward to the grand re-opening of the oldest flapping track in the world.

WHEATLEY HILL

The 2014 Graders Sprint Championship has been won by Soul Alert owned and trained by local fella Mr Ralph Edmundson . This dog boasts an impressive record at Wheatley Hill, eight races and seven wins including an open race. He dominated the whole competition going undefeated through all three rounds pinging the lids each time giving the other dogs no hope of taking the glory. Each round he won he clocked open class times causing alot of interest from North of the border with a few of the Scottish lads wanting to know if the Soul dog was for sale. Having spoke to owner Ralph he said “Hes definately not for sale...I couldnt replace him”

DILLYMORE DELIGHT

BY LEE CALCUTT

Frantic four weeks topped by return to action of Swift Keith T

he past four weeks have been frantic for everybody involved with Dillymore Kennels. The highlight has been the return to the track for Swift Keith. His owner Chris Waters would have been delighted to see Keith back to winning ways at Coventry recording a 28.97 for the 485m course. This was followed up a week later at Wimbledon with a stunning display to ping from the boxes to record 28.22 over 480m. Keith has matured from puppy status to all age company and he is one of the fastest greyhounds John Mullins has ever put a lead on. Keith has won 7 of his last 8 races and has gone off favourite in all but one race, his maiden race at Hove. Scottish Derby was the plan for Keith but after second thoughts Keith’s main plan will be an English Derby campaign at Wimbledon, for which he is currently jointfavourite with the leading bookmakers at 20/1. Burgess Borna continued her winning streak over the marathon distances with wins at Crayford over 874m and Wimbledon’s 894m in impressive style. Her winning run was bought to and end at Romford over 750m, which is probably a little too short distance for her, but after being baulked a few times she ran on very well to the pickup. Glanmire Jet, back on the flat after his Springbok campaign, obliged first time at Swindon leading all the way from the boxes to record fastest calculated time of the year 28.58 in his Arc Trial Stake for his very pleased owners. Prior to this he ran a very good race at

Romford where he jumped very well and was unlucky not to beat Grand National winner Mad Mash Snowy. Tyrur Andy since being stepped up to the short 6-bend trips at Romford and Crayford as found life easier in open company. He struggles to make the front in top class 4-bend racing but over the 540-575m trips he is able to assert his early pace more prominently. Andy has won 4 from 6 races recently over the 6-bend trips leading all the way. His race at Swindon over 480 for an Arc Trial Stake he stumbled very badly out of the boxes giving the field a 10 length advantage, but to his credit raced a very game race to finish 5th not far behind the winner. The Sundance dogs Spartan and Storm for the Barker Family Racing. Storm won the Sittingbourne 500m maiden final leading all the way to victory. He has subsequently qualified for the Nottingham Betfred British Bred final along with kennel mate Sundance Spartan.

Both dogs have very good early pace which is there weapon to be able to dictate their races. On the graded front Yanchep Park was the dog to follow last month and he has followed up his successes in A5 grade now up to A2 grade after a succession of winners. He has performed well to-date in A2 and will shortly be winning and taking himself to top-grade company. Bitch to follow this month is Donnys Angel. She has run some cracking races in defeat finishing close seconds in A2 grade. She had a spin around Romford over 575m but cramped up the home straight. She should have few months with the sun on her back she will shortly be back to winning ways Up and coming weeks the kennel is looking to have runners in the Swindon Arc and is getting preparations under way for an English Derby Campaign with a number of runners.
