Grenadian Physicians in the Diaspora Support Local Fight Against COVID-19

The rapid increase in COVID-19 positive cases in Grenada has caught the attention of US-based Grenadian physicians, some of whom have travelled back home to lend support to the medical team here.

Three of these doctors are Phillip Bonaparte, Molara Alexis and Karina David. Drs. Alexis and David flew home during the week of September 27, while Dr. Bonaparte was on island during the week of September 20.

Dr. Alexis, an infectious disease physician, who has experienced a few COVID-19 surges in the U.S., said collaboration is key in curbing the spread of the virus. She said there are many other Grenadians in the diaspora who are part of efforts to support to the health sector in Grenada.

“Grenada is my home. I wanted to be here to just support the healthcare workers during this very terrible time - to let them know that they are not alone. We are here to support you however we can,” Dr. Alexis said. “I do not speak on my own behalf but also on behalf of other medical professionals in the diaspora. We have a group, and I would be remiss to not mention that these doctors and laboratory professionals right now are working on raising funds, on providing education, telemedicine, and also, as is possible, to come to the ground to support the healthcare workers.”

Dr. Karina David, a primary care physician, is grateful for the opportunity to serve her country during this time. She commended the diaspora healthcare team for investing in Grenada.

“I have quite a bit of experience with how COVID affects a broad spectrum of patients and I’m happy to answer any questions regarding that,” Dr. David said.

“I have to thank the diaspora, the group of physicians who we have been working with, spearheaded by Dr. Michelle Friday and Dr. Lisa Radix. They have been instrumental in getting us here today.”

Dr. Bonaparte acknowledged the valiant efforts of Grenada’s medical team. He also echoed the sentiments of Health Minister, Hon. Nickolas Steele, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shawn Charles, about the importance of vaccination as an effective tool to fight the virus.

mind of most. That means that it’s closer to about three billion people who have been vaccinated. You do the math, and the likelihood of death is miniscule. People have a much higher chance getting into a car that they’ve purchased to transport them and dying from a car accident or taking a plane and crashing than the complications that we see from COVID-19, as opposed to someone getting the vaccine,” he said.

Dr. Bonaparte explained that the COVID-19 virus mutates in infected people, making it more difficult to control.

He said, “One of the things we know about the virus is that it will keep on going. It will keep on the cycle and every time it infects someone who is not vaccinated, it will mutate. It will keep mutating, because its survival of the fittest and I’m here to say today that you can stop that cycle, you can break that cycle.”

Like Dr. Bonaparte, Drs. Alexis and David encouraged Grenadians who are hesitant about getting vaccinated, to consider the option as their best shot in preventing the further spread of the virus.

Dr. Alexis said, “With the Delta variant, what I have personally seen is that the patients that I have admitted to hospital, particularly those who are severely ill, are the ones who are unvaccinated. We do understand that there are breakthrough cases and, yes, I have seen partially vaccinated people and vaccinated people come to the hospital, but in the majority of cases, the people who are admitted struggling to breathe, requiring a ventilator, going to the ICU are unvaccinated.”

Dr. David added her support for vaccination saying, “Our vaccinated patients just tend to do better. If you are vaccinated, God forbid you end up in hospital, you tend to have a shorter, easier course. We see a lot less ICU admissions, a lot less intubations. We know that our vaccinated population just tends to do better. It is the same thing we are seeing here, in Grenada. It tends.

Dr. Bonaparte said the Delta variant can replicate and cause infections throughout the body that is by far greater than anything he has seen before in his medical profession.

He said alternative medicine cannot fight the virus and people need to get tested, get vaccinated and follow the protocols. He has also issued a call for Grenadians to pay particular attention to their health as the number of people living with comorbidities, or underlying health conditions, is very high.

Dr. Bonaparte said, with the present crisis, given the rise in COVID-19 positive cases, people with comorbidities, such as hypertension, are at higher risk of running into complications, especially if they are not yet vaccinated.

He said, “Most Grenadians with high blood pressure, if they go and take a family history, you find that some other person in the family, close family - immediate or extended family – have had or been treated for hypertension.

The second one is diabetes. These put you at risk and the third, which in some cases may be the number one, is obesity. I could tell you with one look through the ward, almost every single one that I’ve seen have had one, two or all three of those comorbidities.

No one was prepared for the level of challenges we are facing.

We are in unchartered territory and a lot of our public officers on the frontline, especially our nurses and police officers, are facing a serious challenge, so there is clearly a need for psychosocial support. Our health professionals are confronting an unprecedented number of daily deaths, there are people dealing with the loss of family members and colleagues and many are also faced with drastic changes in their financial situation, all of which are significant stressors on the human psyche, and they need help to cope.”

Dr. Mitchell commended the team of counsellors and psychologists who are going beyond the call of duty in serving the people of the nation during this critical time. The Ministry of Social Development now offers a 24-hour service for persons requiring psychosocial support. The Prime Minister sees this as an area that qualified persons in the diaspora can easily contribute to.

He said, “This is truly an area of untapped resources. We have received many offers of support from people who are concerned about the current situation in Grenada, and I think the time is right to issue a call for help in the area of psychosocial support as these services can be provided virtually. The small team of persons we have at present, while I value their commitment,

Volunteerism Is Important

The Medical Coordinator of the more than 100 volunteers partnering with the government in the weekend vaccination drives to reduce the rapid spread of COVID-19, said this initiative is crucial at this juncture as Grenada goes through its wave of the virus.

Dr. Nilo Álvarez-Toledo, who spoke with the Government Information Service via telephone, said with an already overwhelmed health sector, health professionals cannot wait on patients to reach the hospitals to begin the fight.

He said, “Even with all efforts that Ministry of Health - were making, we know that we don’t have enough people to go into the communities and many health care providers are ill with the virus. This is when we came up with this initiative with the Government of Grenada to support and help the Ministry of Health and bring this vaccination to every single community and it’s incredible how the people have responded so positively to this initiative.”

COVID-19 Vaccines Safe for Pregnant Women

Two young, female doctors are assuring Grenadians that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Acknowledging the concerns about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for women during pregnancy, Drs. Molara Alexis and Karina David assured the public that the vaccines are quite safe and reduces severe illnesses during and after pregnancy.

Dr. David said contracting the virus during pregnancy can increase the risk for severe illnesses and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. “We do recommend that pregnant women and lactating women get vaccinated. In fact, pregnant women stand to have higher rates of complication from COVID-19. So yes, if you are pregnant, we implore you to go ahead and get the vaccine. It is safe and effective in pregnancy.”

Dr. David shared her own experience on vaccination and breast-feeding. She said, “We 100 percent recommend vaccinations

for nursing mothers. In fact, I was nursing my four-week-old infant when I got my first dose. He was about 12-weeks old when I got my second dose and still nursing him.

I got my booster recently, and he is still doing well.”

Dr. Molara Alexis also joined her colleague in stressing that COVID-19 vaccination is safe for pregnant women.

She said, “The New England Journal of Medicine had an article where they looked at a little over 35,000 people who were pregnant, who received their COVID vaccine, mRNA vaccine of which Pfizer is one. There were no safety signals, meaning they did not see anything that would indicate that the vaccine causes spontaneous abortions, preterm labour or something like that.”

Referring to other research, Dr. Alexis added, “There was another study done by St. George’s University, in London, United Kingdom, and they were able to say, after looking at the women who got the mRNA

vaccine particularly - a small percentage AstraZeneca - there was no increased rates of stillbirths and fetal abnormalities. So again, it is not a live vaccine for example, the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine.

That’s a live vaccine. You’re not going to give it to a pregnant woman, but these vaccines offered here in Grenada, Pfizer and AstraZeneca, are not live, and thus I agree that vaccination is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.”

Prime Minister Heartened by News of Recovery Among Police Officers Who Tested Positive for COVID-19

Prime Minister and Minister for National Security, Dr. the Right Hon. Keith Mitchell, is heartened by the rate of recovery among police officers affected by COVID-19.

In recent weeks, a significant number of police officers either tested positive for COVID-19 or were placed in isolation due to exposure to the virus. The situation placed an additional burden on the system and required various adjustments to ensure that police operations continued seamlessly. The majority of affected officers have since resumed active duty, having recovered and/or completed the period of isolation.

Sadly, two officers succumbed to the disease and the Prime Minister has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as to the rank and file of the Royal Grenada Police Force.

In an interview on Sister Isles Radio Tuesday, Dr. Mitchell said, “The job of the police force is to protect us, and since the start of the pandemic, they have been making tremendous sacrifices to fulfil this duty.

Unfortunately, some of them became infected with the virus, but I am heartened to hear that many of them have recovered. I must thank them for the immense sacrifices they continue to make to ensure the safety and security of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. They deserve all the commendation for the work that they are doing at this time, as part of our frontline personnel. We have to be grateful for their dedication and I want to encourage the people of this country, not to add to the burden they already face. It is important as lawabiding citizens, to play your respective roles in adhering to the recommended protocols.”

Vaccinated COVID Survivor Urges Colleagues to Get Vaccinated Craig Charles, a resident of the constituency of St. George Northwest, is encouraging his colleagues to get tested and vaccinated.

Having recently recovered from the dreaded virus, Charles is thankful that he had the opportunity to get vaccinated, and, his symptoms were not that severe, compared to stories he has heard from others.

Charles spoke with GIS during the recent pop-up clinic at Pier 57 in Grand Mal. He said, “As a gentleman who was diagnosed with COVID and has recovered, I was vaccinated and was not sick. In the first four days, it was just a headache and after that I was good for the rest of the time. I have recovered nicely. I’m urging all the young ones, especially the guys in Grand Mal and Fontenoy who play soccer, I urge you all to come out and get vaccinated, and it’s the best way forward. I brought my two children to be vaccinated and I think that’s the best decision I have made as a parent.”

Shivana Manwarring, another person who attended the Pier 57 pop-up clinic, shared why she believes it’s important for people to make the conscious decision to get tested and vaccinated.

She said, “I came out here to get tested,

as well as to get vaccinated, to protect not only myself but family members and friends that I am around. It was a pleasure to see a lot of the young people out here. I would advise people to get vaccinated and make the right choice.”

CMO Concerned About Social Gatherings

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shawn Charles, is concerned that successes being recorded in the fight against COVID-19 can be jeopardised if there isn’t a change in the behavioural pattern among Grenadians.

With hundreds of active cases, more than 100 COVID-19 deaths and increased hospitalisations, Dr. Charles said he is dissatisfied with the behaviour of some Grenadians, who continue to blatantly disregard the regulations in place to protect citizens from the spread of the virus.

Dr. Charles, while addressing members of the media in a Post Cabinet Press Briefing on, September 21, said the behavior of some individuals puts their health and that of others at risk, while making the job more difficult for health professionals.

He said, “I have personally observed rum shops or liming spots where young and middle-aged and some women gather, disregarding the fact that we are in the middle of a health crisis. The proprietors of these establishments seem to have a high tolerance for having theses persons gather, without masks. These persons then return to their families and can potentially carry the disease to them, passing it on to persons who are quite vulnerable and they in turn suffer the severe consequences. This type of behaviour is absolutely irresponsible.”

Dr. Charles said, “Sometimes even after curfew hours, you still see some popular rum shops with gatherings. This is not a joke. This is not something to be taken lightly. So, we encourage these individuals – they’re adults – to be more responsible. We should not be seeing large gatherings outside of rum shops, not wearing masks; not distancing.”

Dr. Charles also revealed that there are persons who test positive and refuse to isolate, returning to their various communities and endangering the lives of others.

“There are individuals who are denying, at all costs, when they test positive, that they have COVID. They completely refuse to accept the diagnosis,” he said. “They go about. They move around in the community, and they spread the disease to others and then the disease can reach the vulnerable. All this needs to stop.”

New Funeral Regulations for COVID-19 Related Deaths

The Government of Grenada in collaboration with religious leaders and funeral directors have implemented a series of new measures to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

The measures were outlined by Acting Director of Medical Services, Dr. Tyhiesia Donald, during a joint press conference on, September 20.

She said since August 2021, the rate of infection has increased, and community spread of the virus is much more pervasive along with the increase in deaths. The measures were drawn up to discharge responsibility compassionately and respectfully to the departed and their families.

The decision was taken out of an abundance of caution, having been told that the possibility of the spread of the virus decreases in open spaces, as opposed to indoor environments.

Grenada Loses Its Oldest Citizen to COVID-19

On September 24, Grenada recorded the death of its oldest citizen, Ms. Leonora Massima Noel, whose age is recorded as 119.

Ms. Noel, a resident of Carriacou, succumbed to COVID-19 while being treated and monitored at the Princess Royal Hospital.

Both Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Hon. Keith Mitchell, and Hon. Kindra Maturine-Stewart, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government, are deeply saddened by her passing and have extended condolences to her family and friends and to the many other families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19.

Dr. Mitchell said, “It is unfortunate that we are losing so many of our senior citizens to this dreaded disease. They are among the most vulnerable and we have to do our best to protect them from this virus. I pray that Sister Leonora finds eternal peace.”

Grenada and the Dominican Republic Sign Joint Communiqué Establishing Diplomatic Relations

Government Continues to Provide Support to Bus Drivers The Ministry of Transport continues to provide assistance to bus operators to help them improve compliance with COVID-19 protocols and to cope with the economic impact of the pandemic.

Through the Ministry’s programme of support, bus operators are provided with sanitisation fluid and masks to augment their personal supply. The Ministry has distributed 600 litres of sanitisation fluid in a three-week period, in addition to masks, through its partnership with the diaspora and business communities.

Government has consistently underscored the need for collaboration and partnership to successfully fight the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore extends sincere gratitude to all private sector and diaspora partners who have made valuable contributions to the public transport sector at this crucial time. These include Geo. F. Huggins & Co. (G’da) Ltd., Clarke’s Court Rum and Grenadians in Canada and New York, through the Desk of Diaspora Affairs.

The Ministry is engaging the Grenada Ports Authority to afford bus operators the benefit of a waiver of bus terminal fees. This benefit amounts to approximately $20,000 weekly, resulting in a corresponding loss of revenue for the Grenada Ports Authority, which is still required to maintain the terminal and meet the salary of staff.

It is estimated that, since the start of the pandemic, the Grenada Ports Authority, through its partnership with the Ministry of Transport, has granted a waiver of terminal fees amounting to nearly $1 million, even while it faces its own revenue challenges.

The Ministry of Transport is also engaged in discussion with RUBiS regarding support for the sector.

Additionally, Government has started reengaging auto part dealers to determine their willingness to provide discounts on auto parts to bus operators. Positive responses have already been provided by three businesses.

Beneficiaries Receive Implements for Backyard Gardening Initiative

On September 15, 2021, the Climate Smart Agriculture and Rural Enterprise Programme (SAEP) commenced its collaborative initiative to distribute seedlings, tools and nutritional booklets to vulnerable families in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The initiative commenced in the parish of St. Andrew with more than 60 families receiving inputs and seedlings.

The families were selected based on family size (number of children, presence of senior citizens), presence of unemployed family members within the home and a focus on providing assistance to singleheaded households.

The packages included seedlings: tomatoes, seasoning peppers, lettuce, cabbage, pak choi, kale, chives, thyme and celery, watering cans, hand forks, trowels, herbs and recipe booklets completed by the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council. This Initiative was officially launched by SAEP and the Ministry of Agriculture and

Lands in September of 2020 at the Cadrona Home in La Fillette, St. Andrew.

In the coming weeks, visits will be made to homes throughout the parish, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique, to distribute the backyard garden packages, ensuring all COVID-19 protocols are strictly adhered to by the extension assistants of SAEP, with the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands and the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs officials.

Ministry of Agriculture Takes Measures to Alleviate the Shortage of Eggs on the Local Market The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, and Forestry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Consumer Affairs engaged the Grenada Association of Poultry Producers and other stakeholders and has identified several interim measures to address the shortage of eggs on the local market.

Preliminary information has confirmed a shortage of eggs, which is attributed to the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a direct influence on business continuity within the poultry sector.

Given the increasing demand for eggs from the hotel and tourism sector as well as individual households, some interim measures will be instituted.

These include: • Collaborating with the Ministry of Trade to allow for the temporary importation of eggs to help alleviate the current shortage • Partnering with the Grenada Association of Poultry Producers to conduct an assessment to determine the level of readiness for egg production • Assisting the association to return to pre-pandemic production levels

• Engaging with stakeholders of the poultry sub-sector to develop a mechanism to mitigate any potential future shortage of eggs The Ministry assures the public that it remains committed to its mandate of working with all stakeholders of the poultry sub-sector to create an enabling environment for the sector to thrive.

St. John’s River Flood Mitigation Project Makes Progress

Death of a Sporting Icon

Grenada has lost another sporting stalwart, Tyrone Sampat Harbin, who died on, September 21, at his home in Tempe.

Minister for Sports, Culture and the Arts, Hon. Yolande Bain-Horsford, expressed condolences to the family, on behalf of the government.

She said, “I wish to extend my condolences to the family of Tyrone Sampat Harbin, a former national football player, a cricketer, a manager and coach of the national team at all levels. I must say that we were very saddened to learn about his passing. He will always be remembered for the great contribution he has made toward the development and advancement of sports and nation building.”

One of Mr. Harbin’s favorite quotes, when approached for an interview or in a general conversation went like this: “I enjoy what am doing. I am incredibly lucky to have the privilege to represent my country, whether I went in to bat, to bowl or field or score in football or cricket. I felt it a job to do for my team and my country and I did it to the best of my ability.”
