Prime Minister Reiterates Call for Unity and Responsible actions to Curb the Spread of COVID-19 in Grenada Prime Minister, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell has reiterated his call for unity and collaboration as the country intensifies its efforts in the fight against COVID-19 in the midst of the current spike in infections.

Continued Rise in COVID-19 Cases Points to Community Spread of COVID-19 cases continues to rise

Statistics from the Ministry of Health reveal that as of 8:30 p.m. on September 7, 2021, the island recorded a total of 1,613 confirmed cases.

During the past week, the number of new cases ranged between 78 and 281 daily, with 231 new cases recorded on Monday, September 6 and 140 recorded on Tuesday, September 7.

At present, there are 1,302 active cases, with only nine of these being imported.

Females account for the majority of the cases at 54 percent, with 46 percent being males.

Grenada Records Seven COVID-19 Deaths in One Day

Grenada recorded seven COVID-19 deaths in a single day, increasing the country’s total from 5 to 12.

The deceased, all of whom had comorbidities, were confirmed cases of COVID-19, ranging in age from 26 to 85-years-old.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that five of the deaths were among patients admitted to the General Hospital, with one death at the Princess Alice Hospital and the seventh person dying at home.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health indicates that four of the deceased are females and three, males. Four of the deceased were residents of St. George while the remaining three were from St. Andrew.

Health officials have also confirmed that the majority of deaths being recorded is among the unvaccinated. The Ministry of Health continues to encourage Grenadians to get vaccinated as this

reduces the risk of severe disease, hospitalisation and death attributed to COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health and by extension, the Government of Grenada extends deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.

Grenada’s COVID-19 Treatment Protocol Includes a Mix of Supplements and Medication for Underlying Conditions

Acting Director of Medical Services, Dr. Tyhiesia Donald has been giving some insight into the treatment protocol for COVID-19 patients currently warded at the General Hospital.

The protocol provides a mix of supplements and treating the underlying conditions that patients may have.

Dr. Donald said, “Our treatment protocol includes Vitamin C supplements, zinc supplements, dexamethasone for persons with chronic or respiratory illnesses, azithromycin, ceftriaxone to cover community acquired pneumonia. We also use the prone position to assist patients with their respiratory effort. Prone position means placing patients face down to help with their breathing.”

Even before requiring hospitalisation contracting the virus, Dr. Donald said there are steps that can be taken to remain healthy during the pandemic.

She said, “Taking care of yourself by drinking lots of water, getting enough rest, taking your vitamin C, eating your fruits and vegetables - that’s the first step. Secondly, we can also ensure that we take our multivitamins which have shown great help in terms of your symptoms with COVID-19.”

Dr. Donald added, “Scientifically, vaccination has shown that it helps prevent severe illness and hospitalisation. Vaccination is a very controversial topic; however, the science speaks for itself.

Presently, many persons who are hospitalised, are unvaccinated. Data illustrates that throughout the Caribbean and right now in Grenada, the same applies. So, we just want to reiterate that apart from taking care of yourselves, vaccination also helps to prevent illness and hospitalisation.”

Strict Measures Being Implemented at the General Hospital

As per Emergency Powers (COVID-19) (No. 3) Regulations SRO.36, visitors will not be allowed at the General Hospital until further notice.

Previously, to visit the General Hospital, one had to take an antigen test, which is commonly used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

However, with the significant rise in the number of COVID-19 positive cases, removal of visitation privileges has become one of the measures used by the Ministry of Health to prevent the transmission and spread of the virus.

What we’ve done is stagger the clinic time, so persons don’t all come at 9:00a.m. and 1:00p.m. to avoid a backup of persons within the outpatient area.”

The Ministry has issued a public notice outlining some of the measures, to ensure that everyone is protected. Among others, children will not be allowed on the compound, unless they are being admitted. Those visiting the accidents and emergency department must be accompanied by one person.

Dr. Donald said, “Radiology services - we continue to do X-Rays for persons who are in hospital and ultrasound services is extended to persons both in and out of hospital, however it is done by appointment. We have suspended outpatient physiotherapy services, but we continue to have our inpatient services until further notice. Health Authorities Stand by COVID-19 Treatment and Discharge Protocols at the General Hospital

The Ministry of Health stands by its protocols for the treatment and discharge of COVID-19 patients from hospital.

Responding to claims made in a series of videos circulating on social media and during an interview on the programme, Ridealong LIVE, the Ministry of Health asserts that there are requisite protocols which are duly followed when a COVID-19 case is confirmed or present in the hospital environment.

In keeping with health protocols, people testing positive for COVID-19 are isolated and treated for their presenting symptoms. When the patient is sufficiently stable, the protocols provide for their discharge from hospital, with advice to continue treatment at home and to self-isolate for a further seven days. COVID-19 patients are therefore advised to ensure adherence to these guidelines to help prevent further the spread of the virus.

Health officials continue to monitor discharged COVID-19 patients and will provide medical clearance at the appropriate time. The public is advised to avoid any physical contact with people known to have tested positive for COVID-19, for the duration of their illness. Further, the public is advised to follow all recommended COVID-19 protocols for their own safety.

These include wearing a mask or other facial covering when in public, maintaining physical distance and avoiding mass gatherings, as well as frequently washing or sanitising hands.

Rapid Antigen Tests Are Effective for Confirming COVID-19

Dr. Charles made the statement in response to concerns that the majority of positive cases are individuals exhibiting symptoms similar to that of the annual flu. In addition, some people believe that the rapid tests can detect antigens associated with other illnesses like the flu.

The main concern for antigen tests is what we call false negatives. By that I mean we have persons who are asymptomatic, who have been in contact with a positive or a suspected case and the antigen test comes back negative. This is our concern, because the sensitivity of that test, meaning its ability to detect a positive case when persons are not experiencing symptoms is lower and, with that in mind, our recommendation is that these persons are still required to quarantine for 14 days and we do two tests for them - on days 7 and 14. That way, in the event that we recorded a false negative on day 7, we would be able to pick it up on day 14.”

Prior to Grenada’s transition to community spread, the Ministry of Health used PCR tests as the method for detecting COVID-19. Currently the Ministry is using both rapid antigen tests and PCR tests to confirm COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Charles provided the rationale for this saying, “Currently Grenada is at a stage where we have

Commissioner of Police Calls for Vaccination Within the RGPF

With the rise in COVID-19 cases in the country and among members of the Royal Grenada Police Force, its top cop is calling on officers to get vaccinated, as this is their best shot in protecting themselves and the public.

Commissioner of Police, Edvin Martin, in a post cabinet briefing on Monday, Aug. 30, noted that the role of the RGPF is critical as the country navigates its way through this pandemic. As frontline workers, he believes his rank and file must do all they can to protect themselves, each other and the nation.

He said, “The fact that the force is now impacted with having positive cases is testimony of the fact that we all need the best possible protection. I do fundamentally believe that vaccination is the best possible protection in addition to us having the protocols.”

Commissioner Martin said the number of officers vaccinated within the force is just over 300.

“Certainly, unsatisfactory will be an understatement, but we continue to work with our officers, encourage them, provide guidance to them, briefing, where appropriate, to push them in the direction of being vaccinated. We encourage persons that, even if for whatever reason they have not taken the vaccine, certainly the protocols must be significantly increased because whether you are vaccinated or not, we are frontline workers,” he said.

Grenada now has two available choices for COVID-19 vaccine, AstraZeneca and Pfizer. This is administered free of cost to anyone willing to be vaccinated.

The Commissioner said, “The best defence is for us to take the vaccine and so those of us who do not have any challenges with this I really want to encourage us to please get vaccinated and get vaccinated now.”

RGPF Operations Continue Despite COVID-19 Impact The Royal Grenada Police Force is assuring the public that it is still wellpositioned to efficiently execute its duties,

The Commissioner noted that contact tracing efforts are continuing, with a view to isolating anyone with whom the officers may have come in contact.

Youth and Vulnerable Families to Benefit From COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Package 2.0 The Government of Grenada will expand its Support for the Education, Empowerment and Development Programme (SEED), to include families who have slipped further into poverty, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development and Housing, Chrissie Worme-Charles, said the expansion falls under the Government’s $36 million COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Programme 2.0, which will provide relief to single-parent headed, vulnerable families for six months.

The second stimulus package is being funded through the Caribbean Development Bank, under the Inter-American Development Bank/Caribbean Development Bank Global Loan Programme, and the Government of Grenada. Worme-Charles explained that the financial assistance will act as a buffer against the economic shocks caused by the global pandemic.

Middle-income households that are now low-income due to unemployment will also benefit under the cash transfer initiative.

She said, “The expansion programme would be for six months. The persons would be vetted. They would have to go through a PMT(Proxy Means Test) test to ensure that they meet the qualifications of the programme and once they qualify, they would be able to receive some benefits and that would hopefully go a long way to help cushion the impact of the COVID financial shocks on families.”

The stimulus package will include $1.35 million to expand youth entrepreneurship and programmes.

Acting Youth Coordinator, Royden Beharry, said more than 1,500 individuals between the ages of 15 and 35 will benefit from training to enhance their capabilities and skills to become business ready.

He said, “We’re looking for persons who are not gainfully employed to ensure that we can engage them to enhance their capabilities and capacity to be ready for the job market. The component focuses on specified population segments, with training sessions to enable them to build their capacity towards the establishment of businesses.”

The Division of Youth plans to engage a new cohort of trainees every six weeks. Each beneficiary will receive a stipend of $700 for the duration of the training.

Beharry said, “The overall objective of this subcomponent is to look at the skills and technical capabilities of potential and current job seekers. This will be implemented through initiatives led by the Division of Youth Development and other potential partners and implementing agencies, such as some of the existing ones in Grenada such as NEWLO, SAEP, GIDC, GDB and our own YUTBIZ project here at the Division of Youth Development.”

Unemployed adults and single parent households are eligible to benefit under the sub-component.

1 Myth: Census doesn't impact me or my family.

Fact: The Central Statistical Office has a legal Obligation to protect your personal information. Information that discloses the identity of any respondent, household or individual cannot be disseminated by law.

Hence, no one can access your census info — NOT the government, NOT insurance companies, NOT Friend of the Court, NOT your landlord, NOT social services.

Fact- Every person counted matters. How much is allocated for health, grant funding for community projects, Government assistance for families and the elderly, are all determined by the census, and depends on YOU sharing the correct information.

3 Myth: Gov't can use my info. to raise taxes..

Myth: I can choose to NOT participate in the Census: Fact: It is the Law that everyone must participate in the Census, it is not optional. Sharing accurate information can only result in better planning by the State, spurring growth in our communities and ensuring a better future for our children.

Myth: Census counts only citizens of Grenada..

Fact: The census is required by Law to count all usual residents of Grenada, Carriacou an Petite Martinique as of the 15th September 2021.

Immigration status does not matter (ie whether you are a citizen or not). All immigrants must be counted as the state has to provide for you as well for example; students at the St. George's University who is on island for 6 months or intend to be there for more than 6 months, etc.

22 Teachers Complete OECS/USAID/ECJBTE UWI Reading Certificate Course Twenty-two primary school teachers have completed an OECS/USAID/ECJBTE reading certificate course and have received certificates of achievement and participation.

The reading certificate course included 60 hours of instruction, which focused on specialised reading instruction, emphasising practical knowledge and skills for quality reading instruction in the primary school grades – kindergarten to Grade 6.

The course sought to help participants develop teaching skills in reading assessment, allowing them to use the outcomes of these to plan reading instruction. The expectation is that these teachers have mastered skills to ensure that primary grade learners develop essential reading skills.

UNDP Supports Nature-Based Solutions For Erosion Control in Grenada Through funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is implementing the Climate Resilient Agriculture for Integrated Landscape Management Project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry.

In August, the GEF/UNDP Climate Resilient Agriculture Project provided field demonstration and practical hands-on experience in the development and maintenance of check dams and gully plugs, using natural materials, as effective erosion control structures.

More than 35 persons, including 20 women, participated in this demonstration activity, which took place within the Grand Etang Forest Reserve.

Grenadian Footballer Ronaldo Joseph is Scholar Athlete at Western Illinois University Grenadian student and footballer Ronaldo Joseph is now a scholar athlete at Western Illinois University (WIU).

Joseph will play striker for the NCAA Division I-AA Leathernecks located in Illinois, USA. He is the first Grenadian scholar athlete at the institution that has also offered academic scholarships to local TAMCC graduates.

Eight other Grenadians have started their degrees online at WIU with minimal tuition costs. Several others, including Marcus Baptiste of St. David and Jelissa Baptiste of St. Andrew earned full graduate assistantship and complete tuition waivers for master’s degrees.

Two other Grenadians are also registered for doctoral degrees in leadership.

WIU allows TAMCC graduates to begin their degrees online, saving the cost of housing and other costs, and then migrate to the campus in the USA for the final year or two, depending on the field of study. More than 60 bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees are offered by the university.
