Representatives of Government’s Negotiating Team and the Grenada Union of Teachers have agreed to jointly review Government’s fiscal position at the end of March 2021, to determine its ability to pay the 4 percent salary increase which is due for 2021.

Agreement on this was reached on Friday, Feb. 19 when the GUT and Government held what has been described as amicable talks in the presence of the Labor Commissioner.

The current collective bargaining agreement between Government and the unions representing public officers provides for a 4 percent salary/wage increase in 2021. Government acknowledges this contractual obligation, but it has requested a deferral in the payment of the increase given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country’s revenue earnings.

The unions have not agreed with the request.

Government is unable to definitively say when it will be able to pay, but it has offered to keep the unions fully abreast of the country’s fiscal position.

Friday’s agreement with the GUT to review at the end of the first quarter is a welcome one. The two parties have agreed to return to the Labor Commissioner for the joint review in March 2021.

More Than 3000 Grenadians Receive AstraZeneca Vaccine

The St. Andrew leg of the COVID-19 vaccination programme began at the Deluxe Cinema, in Grenville, on Tuesday, March 2 and will continue until Friday, March 5, for all frontline and essential service providers.

Vaccination is offered daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interested persons must present a valid company photo ID or an official ID inclusive of NIS, driver’s license or passport.

above-mentioned

categories of workers, provisions have been made for the vaccination of seafarers, people aged sixty-five (65) and over, as well as those eighteen (18) years and over with an underlying medical condition, who are interested in the vaccine.

The Ministry of Health advises that all COVID-19 health and safety protocols MUST be observed for the duration of the process.

The national vaccination process will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grenada was one of several countries which instituted a ban on UK flights after a deadlier strain of the coronavirus was detected in the UK in December 2020.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Participates in CARICOM Inter-Sessional Meeting Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, led the country’s delegation attending the 32nd Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, held on Feb. 24 and 25, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago.

The other members of the Grenada delegation included Minister for Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs, Hon. Oliver Joseph; Health Minister, Hon. Nickolas Steele, and Grenada’s Ambassador to CARICOM, His Excellency, Arley Gill.

Several critical matters were on the agenda for the two-day meeting, including the roll out of COVID-19 Vaccines.

According to the CARICOM communique dated March 1, 2021, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is dissatisfied and deeply concerned about the inequitable access to vaccines for Small Developing States like those of the Community. CARICOM calls for equitable access to vaccines in order to curb the impact of the pandemic, to protect our citizens and bolster the economy. Among other initiatives, the Community has called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to convene a Global Summit to urgently address equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, particularly for developing countries, which should be held in the context of the World Health Organization’s ACT-A Facilitation Council.

“Seminar on Production Management of Beekeeping Professional Cooperatives for Grenada”

The People’s Republic of China is offering an online training course, “Seminar on Production Management of Beekeeping Professional Cooperatives for Grenada,” online from March 12 to April 1, 2021.

The programme specifically targets beekeepers, government officials and technical personnel in the beekeeping industry, with at least two years’ experience and/or certification in the related field and who are, preferably, under the age of 45.

The core objectives of the training are to equip participants with requisite knowledge of operating frame-lifting, grafting, queen rearing, splitting and comb-adding, as well as knowledge of technology evaluation in the promotion and marketing of bee products, to include managing and operating the beekeeper professional cooperatives.

IWRM Communications Strategy Consultations Concludes Successfully

The Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry, through funding support from the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), has concluded five days of consultations for the formulation of a National Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Communication Strategy and Implementation Plan.

The team, which includes five Grenadians, had an exceptional game against the Jamaica Scorpions during the week of February 15, winning by 92 runs.
