Seventh Batch of Imani Trainees Launched Seven Hundred and fifty young people were officially welcomed to The New Imani programme during a virtual launch on Friday, Nov. 6.

This group takes the total number of batches under the programme to seven, with hundreds having already transitioned to permanent employment.

During his address to the gathering, Prime Minister and Minister for Youth Development, Dr. the Right Hon. Keith Mitchell, stressed the importance of investing in the nation’s youth, even during financial and economic challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Mitchell said when Government examined the current climate and the way forward there appeared to be no debate on the sacrifices and investment towards youth development.

The Prime Minister said, “This programme being implemented with batch 7, over 750 young persons at this time, is a major undertaking on the part of the Government and people of the country. As you all are well aware, this is a very unique time in our country’s history and probably even the world. On your shoulders lies the present and future of our country. So that sacrifice being made, as I said in the beginning, you owe us nothing. You owe yourselves my friends.”

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Youth Development, Hon. Kate Lewis, emphasized that going forward, Government will put measures in place to address issues of the past under the programme.

Hon. Lewis said, “We are putting systems in place to ensure our young people are afforded every opportunity to reach their fullest potential. We launch

batch 7 today on the heels of the successes of this program, with a vision of addressing issues that have plagued the program in the past. While we are proud of the 2,952 trainees who have successfully transitioned from the program, we acknowledged that there are those who are still anticipating their transition. Therefore, all plans are in place to begin this process.”

Nearly Forty Persons in Quarantine Due to Latest COVID-19 Protocol Breach

Thirty-eight persons are now in quarantine following aggressive contact tracing efforts by the Ministry of Health, in the wake of a breach of Grenada’s COVID-19 protocols by a medical doctor and his wife who arrived here on Nov. 1.

The individuals, who were approved for home quarantine, visited four restaurants in the south of the island before receiving the results of their PCR tests that were conducted on November 5.

Grenada Records New Case of COVID-19

A Grenadian national, who was in close contact with Cases 31 and 32, is Grenada’s latest laboratory diagnosed case of COVID -19.

This brings Grenada’s total positive cases to 33, of which four are active, remaining in isolation.

Case 33 is in her 60s and resides in South St George. So far, she has had no symptoms of the virus, and has been quarantined with her entire household since Saturday, Nov. 7.

All forty known contacts of Cases 31 and 32 are still in quarantine. They all received a first test on Friday, Nov. 13 and will undergo a repeat test next Thursday, Nov. 19, as per the science of the disease.

The Ministry of Health acknowledges the owners of the compliant restaurants that provided the necessary information to help identify potentially exposed individuals. In the case of the restaurant that did not keep a log of customers as required by the Ministry, that restaurant remains closed until the requisite safety standards and procedures are implemented.

The Ministry, through its officials and health wardens, continues its systematic review of all facilities offering services to the public, and will mandate the closure of establishments that are noncompliant or do not meet the required safety standards.

Owners and employees are urged to cooperate with the health team, including the wardens, as their only duty and interest is to keep Grenada safe. They are a critical link in this defense partnership.

As stated repeatedly, the public’s role in safeguarding Grenada against an outbreak of COVID-19 is crucial.

Citizens and visitors alike are required to comply with the rules of the state, look out for each other, and hold each other accountable in practicing safety measures.

Anyone who evades or attempts to

evade the mandatory protocols for border entry, quarantine and mask-wearing in public, will be subject to prosecution under the laws of Grenada.

The Ministry reminds citizens and visitors to continue to exercise good judgement, honesty, and good citizenship, to mitigate against any violations of the health rules.

First Smart Greenhouse to Be Erected at Chinese Demonstration Centre,

La Sagesse The Ministry of Agriculture’s plan for increased agricultural production on island continues to be endorsed by the People’s Republic of China through donations of agricultural materials and equipment, with the most recent assistance being the provision of a smart greenhouse facility to serve in an educational capacity for farmers.

The sod was turned for this facility on Nov. 10, 2020, at the China-Grenada Agriculture Demonstration Center, at La Sagesse, St. David. It will be erected with the aim of teaching farmers the operational functions of a fully automated greenhouse that would reflect crops grown in a fully controlled environment, free from pest and disease interference and the elements of the weather.

“This technology is the future of agriculture,” said Agriculture Minister, Hon. Peter David, who approved this move by the People’s Republic of China. “I urge our farmers to use whatever technology is available to enhance our agricultural production.”

The new facility is part of the expanding agricultural mission and a broadened programme of assistance by the People’s Republic of China. China’s Ambassador to Grenada, Dr. Zhao Yongchen, said this forms part of China’s assistance to help revitalize agricultural production as part of its economic stimulus package.

“The Smart Greenhouse is another endeavor by the Chinese Government to assist Grenada to restore agricultural production, following the donation of $1.2 million in agricultural machinery and 17 sets of large greenhouses,” the Ambassador said.

Minister David said the greenhouse epitomizes advancement in agriculture.

“We speak a lot about technology in agriculture. This is what we speak about when we speak about advancing agriculture,” he stated. “This greenhouse is the first of its type in Grenada and has all of the automation necessary to ensure that we have production all year round. We are extremely happy from the Ministry of Agriculture to receive this from the People’s Republic.”

“Our food import bill for 2019 was $350 million. For a country that is an agricultural country, we have to reduce this food import bill and COVID has provided us with the opportunity to do just that,” he remarked.

This initiative forms part of the seventh phase of Agricultural Production between Grenada and the People’s Republic of China.

retaining wall in Blaize, where water has destroyed an existing structure and is slowing undermining the road. Project Supervisor, Kenny Beach, said more than seven residents are employed on the small project. He highlighted the scope of work.

“The footing will be 12 feet wide by two feet thick and the wall would be approximately 18 feet high. We have about seven men and two women,” Beach said. “We have to divert the water from that area. We’ll just cut it through and bring it on this side so the water would not bother us when we come to cast and so on.”

Meanwhile in Pearls, resident, Susan Romain is thankful for receiving a box drain close to her home. She said the drain has saved her family and neighbors from constant flooding during rainfall.

“I want to thank the Minister for doing a great job for us here, because for the past years the water was a problem for us, flowing through the houses and very messy,” Romain said. “The children had plenty difficulty to cross the drain, because there is plenty mud and right now we got a little ease, because we got a beautiful bridge. This morning I got up about twice for the night to see how it’s running in the drain and I was quite pleased.”

Pure Safe Travel Attracts More Proposals from Cruise and Yachting Companies

The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) is pleased that its approved protocols for its Pure Safe Travel accommodations campaign has attracted more proposals from cruise lines and yachts.

On Nov. 10, GTA’s Nautical Development Manager, Nikoyan Roberts, said all proposals or schedules must be reviewed by the Grenada Cruise Operations Advisory Working Group and must comply with the protocols in place. She said the cruise passengers will only do the Pure Safe Travelapproved tours.

A small luxury cruise operation, SeaDream Yacht Club, with yachts carrying more than 50 passengers, has proposed to visit Grenada on Friday, Nov. 13, and every Friday going forward. The ship is currently docked in Barbados and will travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. Passengers are required to get tested three times and receive negative test results before arriving in Grenada.

Commenting on the results, Dr. Mitchell said, “There were some obvious challenges along the way, but I think ultimately democracy has prevailed and I extend congratulations to the BidenHarris team on their victory. The win is particularly historic as it not only introduces a female vice president for the first time, but she is a woman of colour, with Caribbean roots. This is a win on many levels and in a world where we continue to work towards equality of the sexes, this is extremely significant.”

Sudden Death of Grenadian Involved in Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme

The Ministry of Labour has confirmed the death of Dunbar Horsford of Dudmar St. David, a worker in the Canada/Caribbean Seasonal Agricultural Farm Workers Programme for the last eight years.

Horsford, who left the island in June 2020 to take up duties at a farm in Canada, reportedly suffered a medical discomfort on his way back to his bunker on Monday, Nov. 9, after the completion of his daily tasks. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has commenced work on the main road linking Red Gate to Perdmontemps, St. David.

In this regard, one lane of the road will be closed from Monday, Nov. 16 to facilitate the construction of a culvert and adjoining box drain, to improve the drainage in the area. Additionally, works to reinstate a section of damaged pavement will take place subsequently. The work is planned for 8 weeks.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development apologizes for any inconvenience and anticipates the cooperation of the residents of the area and the general public.

The general public is advised to exercise caution when traversing the area.
